First day in the office for new Guadalupe County Veterans Service Officer By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Guadalupe County) -- Today is the first day on the job for Guadalupe County's new Veterans Service Officer. Appointed to fill that position is Nancy Russell. Russell was the top candidate for the job and selected by a county committee that included members of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Central Texas as a childcare coordinator and then also being co-founder with her husband and family of SS American Memorial. She just kind of filled all of the requirements and the needs for the position of Veterans Service Officer being experienced in paperwork and government documents and the needs of those folks but also having a deep desire and passion for wanting to help veterans really made her stand out from the others," said Kutscher. 2019 Seguin PD Blue Santa Program officially underway Hope Vasquez, of the Seguin Police Department, says applications are encouraged to be filled out and turned in as soon as possible. She says the Dec. 10 deadline is fast approaching and doesn’t want anyone who needs the assistance to miss out.

Over the last several years, the name Russell has become synonymous with assisting veterans here in Seguin. Nancy and her husband Craig are co-founders of the SS Memorial Foundation, a 200 acre space on Lake Placid which has served as a rehabilitative and recreational space for wounded warriors and other veterans.

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says Russell's experience and personal mission to aid veterans is what he believes captured the committee's attention. "Ms. Russell stood out from the other applicants really with a diverse background. She went to Seguin High School. Graduated from Texas A&M University but her work experience with Alamo Workforce Solutions as a career counselor and then working at Community Council South

“Our deadline this year is Dec. 10. It’s Tuesday for the deadline to receive applications. My agencies will probably finish by Monday, the 9th because on the 10th, we need to have them in our hands so I would not wait till the 10th to apply because I would make sure to go to one of the agencies and apply before the 10th. We are accepting applications for Blue Santa for any families in need with children under the age of 12,” said Vasquez.

“They do have to bring documents with them when they apply, a current photo ID or driver’s license with your name or address, proof of address, a utility bill or maybe a lease contract also they need to have two phone numbers. I know most of us, don’t have a home phone number anymore but cell phone numbers are acceptable but we do need two just in case one gets disconnected, we do need to get a hold of you. Some of the things that you need to bring is proof of income but if you receive any government assistance, Medicare, Medicaid, you are in the housing authority, WIC, the Lone Star, your children are receiving free food from the school district just bring us proof of that and we can accept that as part of your income and if you don’t have any of that, then we’ll see if you can meet the guidelines that we have for the income for the household,” said Vasquez.

Fire officials continue to wrap up investigations of recent house fires By Cindy AguirreHerrera

angelpest.com 830.379.3277

“We’ll get those little devils!”

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

(Seguin) — Guadalupe County Fire officials are recapping their investigations into a pair of fires that kept area departments busy on Thursday. Patrick Pinder, Guadalupe County fire marshal, emergency management coordinator, says the first fire occurred at 4:50 p.m. in the 400 block of Brandenburg. Pinder says a wood burning stove is to blame. “The homeowner came home to find smoke coming out of her front door. When she opened the front door of the home, she observed a fire inside the residence in the living room area. She then began to try to get her pets out of the house. This property owner was unsuccessful in getting her pets out of the house.

Unfortunately, there were three pets inside the home that did not make it. Fire crews that responded to this fire got there pretty quickly. However, they were not able to save the home and the home is going to be a total loss,” said Pinder. Pinder says the homeowner was displaced. However, he says she did have insurance and is being assisted by the American Red Cross. Responding to the call were Lake Dunlap, Marion and McQueeney VFD’s. Also coming in to assist were New Braunfels, Schertz and the Cibolo Fire Departments. Pinder says it wasn’t too long after the fire on Brandenburg that fire crews were forced to pick up and do it all over again. He says not only

did Schertz, Cibolo and New Braunfels have to leave to assist in last week’s large Wurstfest fire but new crews had to be called in for a second large fire in Guadalupe County. “As our investigation was wrapping up at Brandenburg Lane, a fire was reported in the 1,000 block of Krause Lane. Fire crews responded to Krause Lane and observed a mobile home fully engulfed. That home was occupied by two people and both of the people were able to successfully get out of the home on their own. However, both of the occupants did have smoke inhalation. One was transported by Seguin EMS to GRMC where he was later taken to San Antonio and the other patient was treated and released at the scene,” said Pinder.

Pinder says this fire appears to have started with a generator on the front porch. He says he homeowner reportedly was pouring gasoline inside the generator when it “flashed on him and started that fire.” The family of this fire in Geronimo was also displaced. They, however, did not have insurance. A current effort is reportedly underway to begin a GoFund me account to help the couple get back on its feet. Fire crews called in for this fire included New Braunfels, Geronimo, York Creek and Seguin Fire/EMS. Like Guadalupe County, the city of Seguin spent most of its efforts also battling a house fire on Thursday in the 300 block of West Ireland Street.

Fire Chief Dale Skinner says the fire was reported just before 4:30 p.m. Thursday. Upon arriving , Skinners says EMS were able to treat a lone occupant on the scene. No others were injured. He says the age of the home proved challenging for fire fighters who worked to control the blaze well into the night. No official cause for the fire has been released. It is believed, however, that the fire started in the front of the house maybe a living area. Providing mutual aid were McQueeney VFD, Sand Hills VFD and New Braunfels. Following what was already a long night, officials say Seguin Fire Fighters returned the next day to assist in the second start up of a fire at the Wurstfest building in New Braunfels.

Blue Santa applications now being accepted

Newly appointed VSO to begin work today in Guadalupe County VSO, continued from page 1 Russell says there was no hesitation in applying for the job. She says she looks forward to the opportunity.

BLUE SANTA, continued from page 1

Vasquez says she hopes this message reaches everyone who needs it. She says even if you don’t need the help, you might just know someone who does.

"My work experience includes five different occupations each unrelated to the other, but interestingly each one is relevant to the VSO position. I am a veteran spouse and my family and I have a strong record of helping active duty military and veterans on a large scale right here in Guadalupe County, and I consider this appointment a continuation of that mission," said Russell.

“We need those families to signup on time -- maybe a neighbor or maybe someone you go to church with that are having hard times, new people that are coming into our town that are not aware about the Blue Santa. Maybe you can spread the word out to them and have them apply so we can be able to have gifts to wrap on wrapping nights,” said Vasquez.

Russell says Guadalupe County’s large veteran population makes this job not only important but worthwhile.

Applications can be filled out at any of the 11 available sign-up locations. Those locations include the Seguin PD, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s office, the Seguin Housing Authority, Head Start, Family Life Center, Centro Esperanza (San Marcos) and the Community Council of South Central Texas. The Seguin ISD Central Office is also serving as an application site along with its campuses, Ball, Jefferson and Rodriguez Elementary School.

“This position is especially important in Guadalupe County due to the very large population of active military and veterans residing here, and the continued growth in the area,” said Russell. Russell says it's important to her to concentrate her efforts on each veteran so that the local office becomes one of the best if not the best.

No matter how many families live under one roof, only one application is required per household. Multiple applications submitted by families will be voided.

“My hope is that the Guadalupe County Veterans

Service Office is known for providing veterans the best individualized attention and service they deserve, not only in regard to VA benefits but also in helping them achieve the best quality of life possible. This can be done by openly and continually engaging with them and providing information on the many local resources, activities, and opportunities available,” said Russell. Kutscher says the county takes it veterans very seriously and believes Russell can do the job. "The commissioners court and the entire county are committed to making sure that we help and provide resources to the right over 20,000 veterans in our county not only through our veterans service office but also through commissioners court, through working with the congressman's office, the DAV, the VFW's -- all the veterans organizations in the county. We strive to provide those services the best we can. So, looking forward to Mrs. Russell starting and again, continuing serving our vets in the county," said Kutscher. Russell replaces former VSO· Marisela Gonzales who served the county for over a year and half.

Navarro football dominates Crystal City in bi-district blowout (San Antonio) - Navarro steamrolled through the 4A Division II bi-district playoffs Thursday night with a 45-0 shutout of Crystal City at Edgewood Veterans Stadium in San Antonio. The Panthers take an 11-0 record into an area-round matchup with Rio Hondo, which advanced with a 48-6 win over Orange Grove on Friday. Time and location details had yet to be finalized at press time. Navarro jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first quarter with a pair of touchdown runs by Euler Deleon and a scamper into the end zone from Johnny Alegria to cap drives of 68, 65, and 65 yards. Alegria broke loose for a 62-yard run to set up his three-yard scoring scamper, and peeled off a 52-yard gain on fourth-and-eight from the Navarro 37 just before Deleon's second touchdown. The Panthers added touchdown runs of 15 and 44 yards from Jean "MoMo" Sims to punctuate drives of

78 and 60 yards in the second quarter, and the lead swelled to 35-0 at halftime. Kyle Dietert scored Navarro's final touchdown on a 21-yard run to finish a five-play, 87-yard march with 6:06 left in the third quarter. The Panthers' final points came on Sebastian Sneed's 35-yard field goal later in the period at the end of a 48-yard drive that Mark Wozniak set up with a fumble recovery. Sneed made all six of his PAT kicks on the night. "The guys came out focused," Navarro head coach Rod Blount said. "We wanted to put a complete game together, and they did. Great defense throughout the game, offense came out clicking, hitting it, specials teams was good, guys flying around making tackles. Complete game. A lot of young guys got it and did a great job for us tonight. That experience, you can't replace that with anything else."

Alegria ran for 163 yards and a touchdown on just six carries, all in the first half. Deleon finished with 124 rushing yards and two scores on eight carries, while Sims totaled 106 yards and a pair of touchdowns on seven attempts. Navarro piled up 479 yards, all rushing, on 41 offensive snaps. The Panthers held Crystal City to 101 yards on 46 plays and forced six punts a week after giving up 38 points and 409 yards in the regular season finale at Bandera. "They weren't happy with the way they played, and we weren't happy with the way they played last week, so they wanted to make a statement tonight, and they did an awesome job," Blount said of his defense. "A shutout is great any time, but in the playoffs, it's super."

Marion rolls in Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs matchup, advances in 3A DI bracket (Marion) - Marion is headed to the second round of the 3A Division I football playoffs for the second straight season after outscoring Lyford 56-30 in Friday's bi-district clash at Veterans Stadium.

Williams' added his third offensive touchdown of the night and fourth overall on a short run in the third quarter and took a 42-22 lead into the fourth.

The Bulldogs trailed 8-0 early, but Jayden Williams returned the kickoff following Lyford's first score 80 yards for a touchdown to make it 8-7 midway through the opening period.

Tanner Beakley and Goodwin hooked up for a 19-yard touchdown and Ray Rayos powered in from a yard out to cap Marion's scoring in the final frame. Marion (8-3) meets Vanderbilt-Industrial in the 3A Division I area round this week. The Cobras advanced with a 50-22 bi-district win over Hitchcodk.

Marion added an interception return for a touchdown by Jacob Devora, a pair of one-yard scoring scampers by Williams, and a 50-yard touchdown pass from Zach Goodwin to Williams to take a 35-14 lead into halftime.

Details for Marion and Industrial's game had yet to be finalized at press time.

Hutto staves off Seguin rally, eliminates Mats 35-27 in bi-district football playoffs (Hutto) - Seguin's valiant fourth quarter comeback fell short Friday evening in a 35-27 loss to Hutto in the 5A Division I bi-district playoffs at Hutto Memorial Stadium. The Matadors fell behind 28-5 just after halftime, but cut the deficit to 15 points when Dillion Gutierrez broke loose for a 57-yard touchdown run on a fake punt and Trevor Waz caught a two-point conversion pass from Jhalen Mickles with 7:15 left in the third quarter. Hutto answered with a 52-yard drive and 14-yard touchdown run from Mekhi Kimble to establish a 35-13 cushion a little more than a minute later. Seguin refused to go down quietly. Mickles capped a 10play, 63-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the fourth quarter, and Garrett Stiles' kick narrowed the deficit to 35-20. Tyson Coleman intercepted Hutto quarterback Grayson Doggett on the next possession and returned the pick to the Hippos' 45-yard line. Four plays later, Mickles powered across the goal line from a yard out, Stiles nailed another PAT, and the Mats were back within one score at 35-27. A 31-yard pass from Mickles to Tristan Moreno set up the touchdown run. Seguin's defense stood tall and forced a Hutto punt to give the ball back to the offense with a chance at a tying touchdown and two-point conversion. The Matadors drove to the Hutto 25, but eventually turned the ball over on downs when a fourth-and-five pass from Mickles to Clark Ullrich on a quick sideline out pattern fell incomplete. Hutto was able to run out the clock from that point.

"I'm proud of our guys standing toe-to-toe with the No. 8 team in the state, and this program's close," Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. "This program's close, and I hope they realize in football you can play with anybody. Anybody can play with anybody. Were they bigger? Were they faster? Heck yeah, but our guys played their tails off and played hard, and you could see them play harder once we got back in the game, and they realized we had a chance to win it. Proud of them, proud of what we've got coming back for the future, but can't say enough about their fight tonight and the way they hung in there." Mickles went 15-31 through the air for 154 yards and an interception while running for 41 yards and two scores on 10 carries. The 57-yard fake punt touchdown made Gutierrez Seguin's leading rusher, as the Hutto defense held starting tailback Marques Washington to 44 yards on 20 carries. Ullrich totaled 53 receiving yards on six catches. Moreno coralled two receptions for 43 yards. Micah Rodriguez returned a blocked PAT kick to the end zone after Hutto's first touchdown with 8:34 left in the first quarter. Stiles hit a 30-yard field goal after Kaleb McCann recovered a fumbled punt return with Seguin down 12-2 late in the first quarter. The Mats had first-and-goal at the three, but consecutive false start and holding penalties moved the ball back to the 18. The Hippos out-gained Seguin 451 total yards to 296. Kimble ran for 174 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries. Doggett completed 18-of-23 passing attempts for 256 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Friday was the final varsity football game for Seguin sen-

iors Waz, Mickles, Jonathan Patterson, Gutierrez, Desvonn Smith, Tanner Schuele, Joseph Vela, Coleman, Martin Rivera, Chanse Hernandez, Josh Avalos, Jeremiah Cano, Tracy Wilson, Aaron Wright, Chance Brewster, and Da'Marcus Harris. Bush commended each of those players for doing everything in their power to try to extend the season in the next playoff round. "Defensively, you saw Chance Brewster in there making plays, Chanse Hernandez was there, of course Tyson Coleman got the interception, Dillion Gutierrez with the fake punt - we're just trying to get four yards, and he takes that thing to the house and really sparks us. The guys fought their tails off up front. Our seniors Josh Avalos, Tracy Wilson, and Aaron Wright up front were definitely out-manned, but they fought and got us enough time to make some plays in the passing game, and earn some touchdowns down there in the red zone." The Matadors' returning offensive starters in 2020 include Marco Montemayor and Daniel Gonzalez on the offensive line, Moreno, Ullrich, and Washington at the skill positions, Stiles at kicker, and defensive standouts Ian Box, Josiah Luna, John Michael Mata, Allen Martinez, and Rodriguez. After finishing third in District 12-5A-Division I and earning the program's second straight trip to the playoffs, Seguin's final 2019 record is 5-6. Hutto (9-1) advances to face Shadow Creek in the second round of the Region III bracket.

Vital Statistics Gordon Lynn Tate

Gordon “Lynn” Tate, age 76, of Kingsbury, Texas, passed away on November 14, 2019. Lynn was born on November 22, 1942 in Victoria, Texas, to Harold Glen and Maxine Ellen (Gray) Tate. After graduating from high school, Lynn joined the United States Marine Corps in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and continued in the Marine Reserves after his active duty tour. In 1968 he received his Certificate of Apprenticeship in the trade of electrician. After many years of being a union electrician, he was elected Business Manager of IBEW Local Union 278 in Corpus Christi, Texas - the youngest business manager ever to be elected in an IBEW local. In that capacity he often managed more than a thousand electricians from all over the country placing them in jobs building the huge refineries in Corpus Christi. Because of his leadership capabilities, in 1978 he was appointed by Governor Dolph Briscoe to be Commissioner of the Texas State Commission of Labor & Standards. Other appointments included Ambassador of Goodwill and Special Assistant to the Attorney General, and he served in Governor Mark White’s administration as Director of the Joint Training and Partnership Division whose efforts retrained thousands of workers who had lost their jobs during the economic downturn in the early 1980s. After his service in State government, he created Texans for Civil Justice, an advocacy group which lobbied for the rights of and compensatory damages for catastrophically-injured Texans. Lynn always was mission-driven to look out for the “little guy”, those people who worked hard to support their families and who wanted to maintain the standard of living and privileges of the middle class in America. He never ceased to advocate for fair wages and practices for workers in any capacity he served.

To no one’s surprise, his most important and favorite roles were loving husband, proud father, and doting and adventurous grandfather. Lynn excelled in many sports and led his family and friends into many adventures involving water skiing, snow skiing, motorcycle riding, running, fishing, hunting, skeet shooting, roping and ranching. He earned a reputation for being an avid car, boat and RV trader! He was known for his hilarious storytelling, prompting many family members to request that he tell the same stories over and over again. Throughout his life, he loved the land and the animals the most. That was evident through his actions and his words, especially through his cowboy poetry. He was asked to read his poems in many venues— the Seguin library, beside the family campfires, and he read them at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. During his time in Seguin, he volunteered for the local ICA chapter and served on the statewide Board of Directors for the Independent Cattleman’s Association of Texas. He also volunteered each year at Round Up to raise money for Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and participated in the South Texas Cowboy Gathering in support of the Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. Lynn is preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Judy Ann (Walden) Tate Ponton. He is also preceded in death by many of his beloved animals. Survivors include his loving wife of thirtyone years, Sharon G. (Budnick) Tate; brother, Dr. Glen Tate and wife Diana; sister, Sharon (Tate) Knapp and husband David; sister-in-law, Janet (Budnick) Brown and husband Michael; brother-inlaw, Russell Budnick; daughters, Debbie Tate, Teri Tate and Laurie Brooks and spouse Curtis Gipson; sons, Guy Tate, and Scott Brooks and wife Deleigh; grandchildren, Cole Brooks, Hannah Brooks, and Braeden Tate Wade and his father Brandon Wade. He is survived by many nieces and nephews, numerous other loving family members and a host of loyal, grieving friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Tres Hewell Mortuary from 5p to 7p. Funeral service celebrating Lynn’s life will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 2p at Tres Hewell Mortuary with Reverend Jeremy Roy officiating. Interment with military

honors will follow in Dugger Cemetery on South Highway 123. A reception will be held immediately following at the Agricultural Heritage Center (Red Barn). Serving as pallbearers will be Cole Brooks, Scott Brooks, Daniel Darby, Gary Gray, Richard Gray, Derek Knapp, Dustin Knapp and Justin Tate. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Michael Brown, Troy Callaway, Bill Darby, Curtis Gipson, Alan Guisinger, David Knapp, Al Lain, Ronnie McDaniel, Bruce Nixon, Jim Smith, Glen Tate, Guy Tate, Braeden Tate Wade and Brandon Wade. The Tate family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to the many loving helpers who came in the home to give Lynn as much comfort and kindness as he needed. Appreciation also goes to the devoted, skilled nurses of Opus Care Hospice and Limitless Healthcare Staffing. Memorial contributions may be made to the Outdoor Learning Center, 1865 E. US Highway 90, Seguin, TX 78155, Guadalupe County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1593, Seguin, TX 78155-1593 or the ALS Association of Texas, 1315 Sam Bass Cir, Round Rock, TX 78681. He was the best man we knew. The best husband to Mom, and absolutely the best PawPaw. Most of all, he was the best Daddy two girls could ever have. Larry grew up in Seguin and was a graduate of the Seguin High School Class of 1965. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Larry was a Texas State Trooper for 30 years. After retiring from the DPS he worked as a Safety Director for Express Carriers, then started his own trucking company hauling cattle for his son-in-law, Vince. He just never could retire. He served with the Texas State Troopers Association for many years, most recently on the Board of Directors. Larry never met a stranger, he touched so many lives. He would go out of his way to always encourage and he loved past any faults. Larry was a true friend. As all of you know he LOVED to hunt and fish with family and friends... We are sure you all have a story or two about that... Memorial contributions may be made to The Country Church, P. O. Box 421, Marion, Texas, 78124 or to the Texas State Troopers Association, In honor of Larry Engelke for families of fallen Troopers, 5555 N. Lamar Boulevard, Suite J105, Austin, Texas, 78751. CDC Updates Number Of Vaping Injury Cases

Project Looks Into Dog Aging

(Atlanta, GA) -- Vaping is causing health problems for more Americans. The CDC reports nearly 22-hundred lung injury cases connected to e-cigarettes have been reported as of Wednesday. At least 42 deaths have been confirmed in two dozen states and Washington, D.C. The patients who died range in age from 17 to 75 years old. Every state except for Alaska has reported a vaping injury, as well as two American territories.

(Undated) -- A new study is looking into the lives of man's best friend. Researchers at the University of Washington and Texas A&M want to involve ten-thousand dogs of all breeds and their owners in a study about how dogs age. Scientists will look at the factors that decide a dog's lifespan and whether life expectancy can be improved. The Dog Aging Project will look at dogs of every age, size and location.

Cigarette Smoking Falls To Record Low In U.S.

Former President Jimmy Carter Up And Walking After Brain Surgery

(Atlanta, GA) -- Fewer people are lighting up cigarettes in the U.S. The CDC says smoking among adults hit an all-time low of 13-point-seven percent in 2018. That's a decline of about two-thirds since the agency started putting the numbers together more than 50 years ago. Still, the CDC notes about 49-million people used tobacco products last year, with cigarettes being the most common.

(Atlanta, GA) -- Jimmy Carter is up and walking in his recovery from this week's brain surgery. Carter's pastor told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that the former President is in good spirits after visiting with him at Emory University Hospital. The surgery was to relieve pressure on the 95-year-old's brain after he was injured in two falls last month. There's no word yet on when Carter will be released from the hospital.
