Baseball/softball complex naming back on the table tonight

Seguin ISD to welcome newly elected, appointed trustees

(Seguin) – The Seguin ISD tonight will not only be looking at new names for various components of its new high school baseball/softball comples, but it will also look at

introducing a few new names on its board of trustees.

Tonight’s agenda includes several key items in which trustees will be deciding on. Naming, pg. 3

Community Thanksgiving Meal set for this Sunday

(Seguin) – In the spirit of community, the city of Seguin is inviting you to sit down at its table this weekend in observance of Thanksgiving.

In partnership with local and area churches, officials say “The Table – A Community Thanksgiving Meal” is an opportunity to not only enjoy delicious food, but also bring people together to celebrate community and to give thanks. The complimentary Thanksgiving meal will be served this Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Seguin Coliseum.

Organizers say approximately 1,000 plates will be served on a first come, first served basis. All are welcome. Plus, no registration is required.

“This event is something we hope the community can enjoy together and take pride in,” said Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. “We look forward to serving and enjoying the company of a wide range of residents – from the youngest to those who are lifelong residents of Seguin. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors and help build

unity in our community.”

Organizers say the free holiday meal is made possible by the generosity of local businesses, organizations and citizens in the community, along with the numerous volunteers who are graciously donating their time to prepare and serve food. In addition to the meal, there will also be activities for kids.

Those wishing to donate or who would like to volunteer are encouraged to sign up at https:// thetableseguin.com/

Uninsured adults in Guadalupe County now have new resource

(New Braunfels) – A new building in New Braunfels is not only helping to meet the uninsured needs of adults in Comal County.

Uninsured adults in Guadalupe County also stand to benefit from the recent grand opening of the new Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) clinic building, a charitable clinic that provides first-class medical and dental care to uninsured adults.

Sharing in the celebration are Oakwood Church and New Braunfels Christian Ministries (NBCM).

Jim Wesson, NBCM executive director, says access to medical care is a growing problem, and the U.S. Census indicates that 13.3 percent of residents,

or more than 25,000 individuals in Comal County, alone, are uninsured.

“VIM may not be the complete solution, but it is one solution,” said Wesson. “It may be the solution that helps someone manage their diabetes, control their high blood pressure, treat their asthma or COPD. It is a solution for more than 700 patients a year who come to over 7,000 appointments annually.”

He said the new facility was made possible by the members of Oakwood Church, who contributed $2.5 million for the construction of the building. Use of the building is provided rent-free to VIM, allowing the New Braunfelsbased charitable clinic to provide

quality medical and dental care to local uninsured patients with income levels less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level at no charge.

“We are deeply grateful to Oakwood Church and their leadership team for their vision and heart for people, and for their encouragement and support,” said Wesson. “They continue to make a difference in people’s lives every day.”

Again, VIM provides medical and dental care at no charge to uninsured adults in Comal and Guadalupe counties with an income level less than 250 percent of the federal poverty level.

Naming, continued.

First, the district will hold a special meeting to canvas and administer the oath of office for three trustees. They include newly elected trustees Grace Mueller, District 3 and Lisa Burns, District 6. The board will also welcome newly appointed trustee William Dwyer. Dwyer, who will represent District 1, was recently appointed after no one filed to replace former Trustee Carl Jenkins during the Nov. 5 election.

Following the special election, the board will host its regular monthly meeting.

Topping the agenda is the possible naming of the new Seguin High School Baseball and Softball Complex. The agenda also includes the consideration of names for each individual field or other key components of the complex.

A total of 16 nominations for the naming of the complex was submitted not only during the first round of nominations but also during the second round.

District officials felt they had to open things up for a second round so that everyone felt heard and was given an opportunity to be a part of the process.

The district also received a total of 8 nominations for the naming of the softball field only and nine nominations for the baseball field.

It should be pointed out that some of the nominated names received multiple requests.

Resource, continued.

The clinic helps uninsured adults manage chronic health conditions, avoid the need for costly emergency care and establish new patterns where physician visits and healthy living become normal and expected. Staff and volunteers collaborate to provide a broad range of services to patients, averaging 600 appointments each month.

After years of use, the need for a new facility became evident as the previous VIM structure reached capacity to meet operational needs. Oakwood Church responded to that need and broke ground on April 26, 2023. Construction was completed in August 2024. This new building was designed with more efficient patient care and privacy in mind. Thanks to Oakwood and the generous donors whose gifts underwrote equipment purchases, the facility is equipped with six exam rooms, three dental operatories and a patient education classroom. It will also provide additional workspace and increased capacity to support future growth.

Several nominations were also excluded for not meeting the criteria as established by the district.

Other nominations were also submitted for various other parts of the complex.

The district hopes to secure a new name for the new athletic facility as the high school prepares for its official grand opening in January.

The special meeting gets underway at 6 p.m. followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Seguin ISD Administration Building located at 1221 E. Kingsbury St.

The new clinic is located at 1239 W San Antonio Street, adjacent to the previous building.

Ray Still, Oakwood Church senior pastor and NBCM board chair, said Oakwood members gave generously to provide this building as a gift celebrating the church’s 40th anniversary.

“This clinic stands as a living testimony to the glory of God. It is a place where the vulnerable of our community will experience the love of Jesus Christ, rediscover hope, and find healing,” Still said.

The new 9,400 sq foot facility located on W San Antonio St was designed with patient privacy and

efficient care in mind. Wesson said the facility is equipped with six exam rooms, three dental operatories and a patient education classroom. It also provides additional workspace and increased capacity to support future growth.

Reflecting on the last 15 years, Wesson explained that physicians, nurses, dentists, and others have worked and volunteered in the former building, providing 88,000 appointments. Their investment represents a staggering $41 million worth of medical and dental care.

Wesson explained that the community is at a critical juncture of unprecedented growth, rising uninsured rates and increased costs. While the new clinic building increases efficiency, more clinical volunteers – primary care doctors, nurses, dentists, and specialists – are needed to fill this growing need and improve the quality of life for those in our community.

“VIM is so much more than a free clinic, and this is not just a building,” said Wesson. “It is a place where lives can be changed.”

SEGUIN, Texas -- #RV Texas Lutheran Football will be heading to McMinnville, Oregon, to face No. 14 Linfield in the second round of the NCAA Division-III Championship Football Tournament on Nov. 30, 2024. The second round matchup between the Bulldogs (91) and the Northwest Conference Champion Wildcats (9-1) at 2 PM CT / 12 PM PT from Maxwell Field and Memorial Stadium and will air nationally on ESPN+.

Texas Lutheran will make its second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, making its first appearance since 2014. With the first round bye, the Bulldogs have already surpassed the 2014 team for the deepest run in program history in the tournament. Texas Lutheran finished the season ranked number 26 in the NCAA NPI rankings that dictated the qualifiers for the postseason tournament as well as receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 Poll.

The Bulldogs won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship (SCAC) for the fourth time in program history, winning three championships in four years during their previous stint in the conference, and are riding a seven-game winning streak, the longest for the program since 2019. Linfield defeated Whitworth for the

NWC crown on Saturday, their third in the last four seasons and 45th in program history. The Wildcats have won eight games in a row following an early season loss to Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Texas Lutheran and Linfield have met just one time in the program’s histories, in the 1974 NAIA-Division-II National Semifinal with the Bulldogs defeating the Wildcats, 52-8, in their penultimate game on their first of two national championship runs.

The winner of this year’s game will advance to the third round and will face the winner of No. 4/5 Hardin-Simmons and Trinity/Mary Hardin-Baylor on Dec. 7.

The Neal LaHue led Bulldogs feature a balanced attack that is averaging a SCAC-leading 35.9 points per game and allowing just 15.9 points per game. Texas Lutheran would also lead the SCAC in total offense (404.8).
