Tarinna Skrzycki-Pfeil, future Chief Deputy

Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office to welcome future Chief Deputy

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – Sheriff-elect Joshua Ray is announcing his new second in command over at the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office. Ray, who will officially take over the reins from retiring Sheriff Arnold Zwicke on Jan. 1, 2025, has announced the promotion of Tarinna Skrzycki-Pfeil as Chief Deputy. Skrzycki, currently serves as the lieutenant for the Criminal Investigations Division.

Ray says they have already, for years, relied on her caliber, experience, and professionalism. He says as Deputy Chief, she will be assisting him in leading the men and women of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office with overall command and control of both operations and divisions.

“She’s been in law enforcement since 1981. She became a police officer in 1985 with the Seguin Police Department. I believe in 1995; she left and went to the New Braunfels Police Department and retired in 2011.

In her PD career, she’s been a police officer, dispatcher, she was a hostage negotiator, she was a detective and was also a sergeant of detectives. She was brought in by Sheriff Zwicke initially to help with their evidence room because she came in in a non-sworn position and was a help with managing the evidence room and also as a crime analyst but later on, he selected her as the lieutenant to supervise the entire criminal investigations division and Deputy, pg. 3

Toy, clothing drive now underway at TLU TLU teaming

up with KWED Radio, Thriving Hearts Crisis Center

(Seguin) – This year’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive is getting a much-needed head start thanks to some fellow Bulldogs. Texas Lutheran University’s Black and Gold Council is currently collecting toys on behalf of the radio station’s annual holiday drive for the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program. Although the effort is not until Friday, Dec. 6 outside our studios, the college community is doing its part to

muster up additional donations not only on campus but at various offsite locations.

In conjunction with its collection of toys, the TLU students are also hosting a Holiday Hope Clothing Drive. The students are accepting new or gently used clothing, blankets and coats to benefit the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center formerly known as the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter. Drive, pg. 3

Eighth graders to set their sights on their futures

Seguin Youth Career Expo slated for today

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Economic Development Corporation (Seguin EDC) today will be hosting the 3rd annual Seguin Youth Career Expo at the Seguin Events Complex. This event aims to inspire and educate local students about the variety of career opportunities in their community.

More than 800 eighth-grade students from Seguin ISD, Navarro ISD, Marion ISD, and Southwest Prep will attend, gaining insights into high-demand skills and exploring diverse career paths. Over 25 local businesses and organizations will showcase their industries and offer students valuable perspectives on meaningful career opportunities. Teachers and students from the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs of Study at Navarro and Seguin High Schools will also exhibit alongside industry

professionals.

Since the students are required to select their CTE pathways before high school, the Expo provides hands-on career exposure at a pivotal moment in their academic journeys.

Organizers say the Expo isn’t just an event—it’s a gateway to future possibilities. Students will engage directly with professionals, see demonstrations, and explore industry-specific equipment, products, and uniforms. This handson approach will help students make well-informed career and education decisions while preparing for high school

Interactive activities and employer-led demonstrations will bring career paths to life. Participating companies and organizations include Alamo Group Texas, Caterpillar, City of Seguin Electric Department, CMC Steel

Texas, Distinctively Remembered, First Commercial Bank, Great Clips, Guadalupe County Adult Detention Center, GuadalupeBlanco River Authority, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, GVEC, H-E-B, Independent Electrical Contractors of San Antonio, Johnson Controls, Junie and Jae Balloon Décor and More, Lonestar Home Solutions, Propel Career Academy, Science Mill, Schaeffler, Seguin Fire Department, Seguin Police Department, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), Texas A&M University | Spark! PK-12 Engineering Education Outreach, Texas Lutheran University, TX FAME Lone Star Chapter/Texas State Technical College, United Alloy, Workforce Solutions YES! Youth Program and Visit Seguin.

Deputy, continued.

it was a great choice because in my small amount of time there, I could see the leader and supervisor that she was,” said Ray.

Ray says Skrzycki brings so much to the table, including nearly four decades of law enforcement experience.

She has seen a lot. She has done a lot, but she also has a great vision for the future and where we need to go as we grow moving forward and she and I, we, see it the same way. We have the same vision. As any good leader and their second should be, we both complement each other well in our strengths and weaknesses. It was a pretty easy decision for me. I’m excited to have her. She is respected in the building among the personnel, and she is highly respected in our profession in the surrounding areas because I’ve talked to law enforcement officers all over the county and outside the county and she’s well known for her accomplishments. What I hear time and time again is a great leader. I hear that over and over again. So, I’m really excited for her,” said Ray.

Ray says as the future new Chief Deputy, Skrzycki will also be the first female deputy sheriff at the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office to hold a rank above that of Lieutenant.

“There is some real significance in the fact that she is going to be the very first female ever promoted to this position, and she was the first female in the sheriff’s office to be promoted to her current position, but she will never take any accolades for that. She earns things by her own merit. This was an easy decision to make purely based on her experiences and her qualifications and her job performance and she will be the first to tell you that she wants to be great for everybody. She doesn’t want to receive any special recognition because of the fact that she to some degree is a pioneer in what she is doing. There weren’t a lot of women in law enforcement back in 1981 and into 1995. So, she really has seen that transition and that professionalization of our job, but she is humble. She is quiet. She is in the background. She is hardworking. She is definitely competent, qualified and ready,” said Ray.

In his preparation to lead the sheriff’s office, Ray has also announced current members of the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office that have accepted Command Level Positions effective January 1. He says the majority of officers will remain in place with a few more new faces to be announced later. He says the following list includes the reorganizing, the restructuring and in some cases, the renaming of some of the titles for the command staff. They include Patrol Division Commander, Captain Jerry Rios; Support Services Division, Lieutenant Zach McBride; Patrol Division, Lieutenant Robert Locker; Criminal Investigations Division, Lieutenant Robert Shockley and Jail Division, Jail Administrator Robert Hernandez.

Drive, continued.

Courtney Burnett, a senior graduate student at Texas Lutheran University, says over the years, the students have organized a holiday 5K event. But this year, she says the students wanted more of an outreach effort. Plus she says the campus wanted an easier way for all students and staff to be able to give during exams and all other end of course events.

Burnett says not only did the group want to fuel the success of KWED’s Holiday Food and Toy Drive, but it also wanted to concentrate on a clothing drive.

“I feel that toys and clothes are a bit under appreciated especially during the holiday season. We have a lot of organizations that do food drives that collect donations for that. Even on campus, we have a food pantry for students that takes donations, but I’ve never really seen a clothing drive or toy drive here on campus and so that is something that I kind of wanted to start making a tradition here not only for BGPC but for other student organizations here on campus,” said Burnett.

Donating toys and clothing is available now through Dec. 6. Burnett says all toys must be new while clothing, again, should be new or gently used. Only socks and undergarments must be brand new.

“Here on campus, you can find them in every building. So, if people are visiting the Student Alumni Center or our College Center, Boeck Center, they can find a box there and donate there. We are also accepting cash and check donations here on campus as well in our Alumni Student Center through our Administrative assistant Ali Bratcher. She is accepting and holding cash and donations there and then off campus, we have locations -- one in the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce; one in Dietz Flower Shop and one in the Seguin Public Library and also, one at KWED,” said Burnett.

Meanwhile, the media team at KWED Radio is excited that its holiday drive is branching off into the TLU community providing more awareness of the needs that exist in this community. Burnett says it’s those established relationships and community partnerships that help make things happen.

“I’ve always said that TLU is a very community driven campus. We benefit so much from helping others in our community helping us and so it’s important that we partner with our local businesses, our local radio station, our local partners to help others and to help others benefit and so, we have two days a year where TLU completely just sends students out to the Garden of Eden or the animal shelter or again, like Thriving Hearts. We send those students out there twice a year so it’s once a semester to serve others and help the community. We have a whole department dedicated – Our Center for Servant Leadership – that is just dedicated to help others. So, I think it’s so important that TLU leans in the community and the community does vice versa,” said Burnett.

All cash donations for the TLU Blue Santa and Clothing Drive can be dropped off at the First-Year Experience and Student Engagement Center located in the Alumni Student Center (ASC) just across from the TLU Mabee Pool. Again, various collection points for both toys and clothes will be available in most TLU buildings including in the ASC.

Burnett along with other TLU students will also be a part of our live events during the KWED’s Holiday Food and Toy Drive. The drive will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 outside the studios at 609 E. Court St.

Welch Named SCAC Special Teams Player of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran punter Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/Canyon) has been named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) for his performance in the team’s win against Southwestern on Saturday, the conference announced on Monday. The honor is Welch’s second SCAC weekly honor this season.

Welch averaged 46.0 yards on four punts as Texas Lutheran completed their undefeated home season with a 17-10 win over Southwestern.

The New Braunfels native placed two punts inside the Pirates 20-yard line that both resulted in Pirates drives starting at their oneyard line. Welch finished the game with a long of 51 yards.

Welch all but etched his name in the TLU record book on Saturday, increasing his season average to 44.5 yards, passing the previous

program record of 43.0 yards held by Harold Anderson since 1962. Welch currently ranks second in NCAA Division-III in punting.

Texas Lutheran, as a team, leads NCAA Division-III with a 42.26 net punting average.

Joyce-Klingemann VITAL STATISTICS

Elaine Ann “Lainey” Joyce-Klingemann, devoted and loving nurse, wife, and mother, peacefully passed away on November 14, 2024 surrounded by family and friends, her battle with an aggressive pancreatic cancer and its complications coming to an end.

Lainey was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Thomas Joseph Joyce and Mary Ann Korjeski Joyce on January 26, 1957. She and her older brother, Tommy Joyce, grew up in a loving Irish family with many aunts and uncles, and numerous cousins who were more like her siblings. She treasured memories of weekends spent at the lake as a youth, and, later, of adventures with her cousins and friends in Scranton and up the pike.

Lainey graduated from Scranton High School and went to Penn State University, where she attained a degree in nursing. In college, the work-study program placed her in the Athletics Office while Joe Paterno was head coach. A member of the Penn State Alumni Association, she was an avid and loyal Nittany Lion and would allow no disparagement of Penn State in her presence.

After graduation, she worked as a home health nurse in Scranton and Hershey, PA. She then took a job as a charge nurse on the neurology floor at George Washington University Hospital in Washington D.C. There, was a nurse to James Brady after he was shot during the Ronald Reagan assassination attempt. She also cared for a Saudi prince and got to visit Saudi Arabia and Egypt as his private nurse.

Eventually, Lainey began looking around the country for a sunny place to relocate. She moved to San Antonio and took a job at Santa Rosa Hospital as Nurse Director of the neurological unit. Soon thereafter, she met her future husband, Bill Klingemann, and the two were married in Scranton, Pennsylvania on August 23, 1991, honeymooning at Niagara Falls.

Lainey then took a job with the Methodist Hospital system where she worked at Metropolitan Hospital for a few years before moving to Northeast Methodist Hospital, where she found her home. She worked in various leadership capacities at Northeast Methodist Hospital for 30 years, including as Vice President of all Methodist rehabilitation units in San Antonio, head of the Joint Replacement Academy, and Director of the rehab and dialysis units. At Northeast Methodist she mentored many young nurses and touched

countless patient lives. She received various awards and recognitions, including 2023 Unit of Distinction – Inpatient Rehab and two awards for her actions while off duty in resuscitating two individuals who had stopped breathing.

In 1993 and 1995, Lainey became mother to her two adored sons, James and Matthew. She loved taking the boys and their friends on various adventures across the state like crystal hunting, major league baseball games, beach trips, and shopping sprees. As the boys grew older, she fostered in them a love of golf, and the three could often be found enjoying a round together at Starcke Park.

Over the years, Lainey developed and maintained many friendships that she held dear. She treasured her time with friends, whether it was playing with the Golf Girls on Tuesdays, enjoying Wednesday happy hour, or taking trips to the coast. Lainey also made new friends wherever she went and was always the life of the party, drawing people in with her laughter and warmth. You couldn’t be around her for long without hearing one of her unforgettable stories about the mob changing her tires, her adventures with a Secret Service agent, or meeting Bill on the dancefloor, among many others.

Lainey loved St. Patrick’s Day, Penn State, Korean dramas, long walks, tennis, apples, sunny days, and her puppies. But above all, she loved her family and friends. Her zest for life was contagious, and she lived each day to its fullest. She will be deeply missed by all.

Lainey was predeceased by her parents, brother, aunts and uncles, and several cousins. She is survived by her husband, Bill J. Klingemann of Seguin, TX, and sons, James Thomas Klingemann of Philadelphia, PA and Matthew Joseph Klingemann of Seguin, as well as cherished cousins, friends, and colleagues.

Services will be held at St. James Catholic Church, 510 S. Camp Street, Seguin, Texas 78155 on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., with interment and a reception to follow.

U of IA Cancer Study Shows Promising Results

(Iowa City, IA) -- A University of Iowa study is showing a high-dose of vitamin C in an I-V could double the survival of some cancer patients. Dr. Joe Cullen, University of Iowa Surgery Professor, says patients who received I-V Vitamin C saw their survival increase from eight months in the standard of care chemotherapy group to 16 months. He says they’ve tested their theory in patients with late-state pancreatic cancer, as well those with brain cancer. They’re trying it with lung cancer patients too. Dr. Cullen reminds patients that consuming high doses of vitamin C orally is less effective.

New Study Explains Why People Like Falling Asleep To TV (Undated) -- A new study is shedding light on why so many people like to fall asleep to a movie or a show. Cleveland Clinic psychologist Chivonna Childs says falling asleep to the TV or something streaming is soothing and calming, similar to white noise. She adds that the sleeping ritual also helps distract people from racing thoughts. However, Childs warns that the blue light from a TV or device may lead to less quality sleep, as it can prevent the body from releasing melatonin. She suggests listening to calming music instead or reading, journaling or meditating right before bedtime. Childs says but if you absolutely have to watch something, make sure it’s something light and not too intense like true crime.
