For sale sign goes up for City approves proposed taxing district Lizzie M. Burges campus for future replacement of dams the vote, but it does allow water front property owners to move forward with their plans for the WCID.

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The city of Seguin has given its blessing to the approval of a proposed taxing district that will help to replace the dams on Lake McQueeney. The Seguin City Council on Tuesday gave its consent for the creation of the Lake McQueeney Water Control Improvement District (WCID) No. 1. Mayor Don Keil says the city is under no financial obligation because of

"This is basically nothing more than a permission by us to allow them to form a special district so they can go in an repair the lakes. From what I also understand is that there is no financial obligation or any other obligation in regards to the city that is needed on this," said Keil. See TAXING, page 2

Max Starcke Park Golf Course Pro Shop prepping for new look (Seguin) -- Design work is nearly complete on the plans for a total makeover of the Max Starcke Park Golf Course Pro Shop.

when I'm told and that's going to free up that room on the right. We are going to have more inside seating in there and that's also going to be the way that golfers go to the new putting green and chipping area in the back," said Allen.

Golf Course General Manager Bruce Allen showed off some of the plans during Tuesday night's meeting of the Seguin City Council. Allen says TSG Architects is handling the design work, and he says the building will get an overall new look. He says the front of the building will have a much more pleasing appearance.

The back of the building will not only provide access to the putting green, but it will also have a covered seating area, with additional space to host golfers who participate in tournaments at the course. He says the putting and chipping practice area will be very different from what's currently there at the golf course.

"We are taking away that tin awning, the tin roof and we are going to go with the suspended awnings kind of like we have at the Development Center. It's going to look like that. When you walk in, you are going to notice a few differences. The counter will be on the left where it used to be way back

"It's going to extend from the Pro Shop all the way to parks office. So, there will be one big putting green back there that will be approximately equal to the two putting greens we have right now and then we will have about 15,000 feet of chipping and putting area. We might even have a sand trap if

Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

Allen says that practice area behind the pro shop will not only be longer, but it will be much wider as well. "The north sidewalk is going to be almost to the tennis court. The south sidewalk is going to be right up against the parking lot so it's going to be a huge area and it will be very convenient for people. I think they will sit out there and practice a whole lot more," said Allen. The design work should be completed soon, and Allen says they hope to go out for construction bids around Christmas.

City gives blessing for new taxing entity needed to help replace dams at Lake McQueeney TAXING, continued from page 1 Bob Spalten, of the Friends of Lake McQueeney, says this action allows the group to take yet another step towards what will likely be an election next year for formalizes the creation of the WCID. "The Water Control Improvement District -- because it is solely in one county, it can be created by the county judge and the commissioners court and because we have houses in the city of Seguin and the city of New Braunfels, we have to get a consent. We are hoping to go through commissioners court on Dec. 17 and on that date, they will create the district. That is a temporary district at that time and then on Monday, May 2, that's when we will have an election and that's when five directors are going

we can figure out where to aim it. We can't have it to where they are hitting towards the parking lot because if they skull it, they'll take out the cars. We can't have it toward the golfers or the players playing tennis but we are going to try to incorporate it," said Allen.

to be elected and the district will be permanently created. Up until now, it's a temporary district so the city of Seguin and New Braunfels have no obligations. Again, this is just a consent to allow the voters to vote on having a district," said Spalten. The council was unanimous in its support of the WCID. The district is believed to be a key part of any deal that allows GBRA and the property owners to reach a deal to repair or replace the hydroelectric dams along Lake McQueeney and the other hydroelectric lakes in the area. It was just a couple of months ago that GBRA announced its plans to drain the lakes, because of concerns about the safety of the dams, which in some cases are 90 years old.

Mayor, council members publicly thank Faseler during final meeting RETIREMENT, continued from page 1 "It's kind of a sad day but it's a great day because Doug is finally going to go out and enjoy some life and have a great time and luckily enough, he's still kind of a young man and so he can do that. I can tell you for a fact that Doug has been a very very big part of the growth and progress of this city over the past two decades believe me. I've been here to witness it and I can tell you that this man right here has a lot to do with how well this city has done, how well it has prospered and how well it has grown and all the great things that have happened here much of which could not have happened without his efforts. So on behalf of everyone here, I want to thank you very much Doug," said Keil.

meeting not only marked the end of the road for Faseler, but Mayor Keil says it's also the beginning of the home stretch for several members of the council "This is the beginning of the last year in office for me and Council Member (Jet) Crabb, Council Member (Ernest) Leal and for Council Member (Fonda) Mathis so we are on our farewell tour as well but hopefully, it's going to be a good year as well," said Keil. Faseler officially retires at the end of January, but his last day in office will be next week. He's worked for the city of Seguin for 24 years, serving as city manager for the last 14 years. He will be replaced by Steve Parker, who currently serves as the assistant city manager for the city of San Marcos.

Faseler told the council that he appreciated the words of support, and he thanked the council and staff for some great years with the city. "It's been an honor to work with ya'll and work together on the things that we've accomplished. It 's not one person. It's a team and then we've got the support -- the directors are very capable, professional and who I"ve been very fortunate to work with but we could not do it as well without the support of the mayor and council so thank you so much and thank you for all for this opportunity," said Faseler. Seguin ISD looking to sell vacant school building By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The Seguin ISD is looking for the next owner of its Lizzie M. Burges campus. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees on Tuesday authorized Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez to begin and oversee the process for selling the campus which currently sits vacant at 225 N. Saunders Street.Prior to serving as an alternative school, the campus for years operated as a kindergarten campus. However after much discussion and consideration, Dr. Gutierrez says the district is ready to part ways with the campus. "The feedback that we received with our facilities committee that came together for over a year was that the district had in its position too many vacant properties that were still an expense for the district. Therefore, falling to taxpayers. We made a decision to vacate Burges Alternative School to Saegert where it is now, the Seguin Alternative School, which now allows us to be able to move forwardwith that property which we had come to decision as a facilities committee of selling after we had theopportunity to sell Juan Seguin

and we are making progress on Juan Seguin and now that we are getting closer to selling that property, we are going to focus our energy on Burges now," said Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says while the campus is no longer of use for the district, he believes that with the right buyer, the building or its location can still have a great future. "What I can say about that property is that it has been of good use to the school district for a very long time. It is now in a condition that it is no longer of use to us as a district but it is on some really prime real estate and if someone is looking to utilize that building for something other than a school. I mean there is certainly potential to go in an renovate but it is also in a very attractive location as well. It has certainly been a part of our history and we want to continue to honor that namesake there as well but we are looking forward to moving forward and having one less additional vacant facility on our hands," said Gutierrez. District officials say the sealed bid process will begin as soon as the district can determine the fair market value for the property. The property is said to be approximately 2.1 acres.

Seguin boys overcome slow start, pull away from Edison in hoops opener (Seguin) - Seguin used a 13-0 run at the end of the second quarter and a 20-10 scoring advantage in the third to run away from San Antonio-Edison 59-44 in Tuesday's season opener at Goldie Harris Gym.

Seguin scored the first six points of the fourth quarter with help from a short banker and three by Tyson Coleman to build a 19-point cushion. Edison came no closer than 15 the rest of the eay.

Vela joined James in double figures with 13 points and hit three threes on the night. R.J. Acuna added seven points, Gerrit Twitero six, Coleman and Joey Ornales five apiece, Doege three, and Tredeveontae Battles two.

The Matadors only managed three free throws by Matthew Doege and a Joseph Vela three-pointer in a cold shooting first quarter, as Edison jumped out to a 13-6 lead.

Seguin head coach Dwayne Gerlich says relentless effort enabled his team to overcome the sluggish start offensively.

Tuesday was the first basketball action after just one practice for football players Coleman, Vela, and Kaleb McCann, and just four days after Seguin's bi-district playoff loss to Hutto.

The Golden Bears extended the margin to double digits, 22-12, in the second quarter before Seguin finally caught fire. The Mats converted multiple Edison turnovers into transition buckets during the 13-0 surge and led 25-22 by halftime. Christopher James scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the third period to help the Mats take a 45-32 advantage into the fourth.

"Man, we were hitting the offensive boards, we were taking good shots, pushing it up, and it just wasn't going in," Gerlich said. "For three quarters, we scored 53 points. It's just that first quarter was a slow quarter, it was six. But that's the way we're going to play all year. We're not going to quit, we're going to keep pushing the ball up and down the floor, we're going to press, and we're going to run the floor and throw up shots. If they go in, great. If not, we'll hit the offensive boards and go from there."

"We went to a scrimmage last week with eight guys, and now we came back and we have 12, and our depth is going to be the big factor coming down these next few games," Gerlich said. "Those guys did a great job, and they're going to get better and better. We'll keep rotating people in, and we'll see what works and what doesn't." Seguin hosts New Braunfels at Goldie Harris Gym on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Marion girls suffer first loss in Lytle (Lytle) - The Marion girls basketball team's season opening winning streak ended Tuesday in a 62-38 road loss to Lytle. The Bulldogs trailed 21-8 at the end of the first quarter and used a 15-9 run in the second to pull

within seven, 30-23, at halftime. The Pirates put the game out of reach with a 19-3 surge in the third quarter to take a 23-point cushion into the fourth. Individual stats were not available at press time. Marion (2-1) hosts Schulenburg on Friday at 5 p.m.
