Area lake back in operation GBRA shares details behind the integrity of Lake Dunlap’s restoration Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
Sensory-Friendly Santa set for visit to Seguin
Sign-up is now underway for the annual Sensory-Friendly Santa photo event Nov.2628 at Goodtimes located at The Backyard. See story on page 2.

(Seguin) – The Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority says it’s proud to welcome back Lake Dunlap. GBRA and the Lake Dunlap Water Control and Improvement District (WCID) recently announced that the lake project has reached a milestone and is now at full capacity. Helping to oversee the extensive project is Charlie Hickman, GBRA’s executive manager of engineering. Hickman says he’s pleased with the integrity of the project. “We are just extremely thrilled to see Lake Dunlap back in operation. The project really involved a complete overhaul of the dam. We were able to put in new modernized spill gates that are going to be a real asset to the project and help operate it a lot more efficiently. We were also able to put some concrete protection over the entire dam to
make it a little more resilient and long lasting,” said Hickman. It was May 2019, when the aging dam gate at Lake Dunlap collapsed. Shortly after, it was the decision by GBRA to empty the body of water. It wasn’t until legal action and finally the creation of the WCID, that collaborative efforts for the lake’s restoration were put into action... Lake, pg. 3

SENSORY-FRIENDLY Santa coming to Seguin Reservations for photos now available Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Thanks to a Christmas tradition that started last year, everyone is getting that visit with Santa that they deserve. Goodtimes, a party room rental located at The Backyard along with Special Kids with Special Needs will be hosting its annual Sensory-Friendly Santa photo event from Nov. 26-28. The cost is free with a $5 toy donation. Raven Garza, of Goodtimes, says the opportunity for visits and photos with Santa is a definite gift from one parent to another. "I have a son who is autistic and he has a few sensory issues and waiting in line for Santa or taking photos is a little bit more challenging for us as a family. I notice the need for it within our community and the last time we took him to a Santa photo, we did a sensory Santa photo. He was about 3-years-old. It was an amazing experience. However, we had to pre-book it in advance and the nearest one was located in Austin and it's in the mall before (it) opened. Although the experience was amazing, it was just so far for us to take these 10 minutes photos. I think our appointment was 8:30 in the morning so as you know getting a child up early in general and having him ready for photos is a little bit challenging and then the drive -- I wanted it to be something closer to us. Something families like myself can be able to do," said Garza. The ability to celebrate Santa and the holiday season is just as important for families with special
needs children. She says whether its sensory difficulties, neurodivergent abilities or other medical conditions, they will be making sure the needs of all families are met. "For this event that we host, we make sure it's on days when The Backyard is at its calmest meaning there is no activities going on. The playground is theirs for their usage. We make sure that it is in about 10 minute increments. We have a photographer who is wonderful. She took here time to help us last year. She's helping us out again. Her name is Diana Nieto and she is Beautiful Subjects Photography. So, she took the time to really let the kids and I think that's what is important with this. We are letting the kids lead. We don't make them pose or do anything, 'hey look at the camera.' It's just these kids are their own personality and she takes the photos. We make sure we have a couple of snacks that they like, sensory toys. It's just more inviting and more calm for them. We don't make it too crazy for the adults. There is no line. There's no loud music, just low lighting. It's their space to play. This is their zone," said Garza. Goodtimes is located at The Backyard in Suite 4 at 225 N. Saunders St. All sessions are by appointment only. Sign up is available at https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/ showSignUp/10C094FAFA828A2F4C52-46109329sensoryfriendly. A link for the event can also be found on the Goodtimes or Special Kids with Special Needs Facebook page.

Pair of restaurants to serve free meals in celebration of Thanksgiving holiday Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- A Seguin restaurant will be celebrating Thanksgiving early by giving a free holiday meal to customers this Tuesday. Reyna’s Mexican Restaurant will be serving up the free meal to go on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Food will be served while supplies last. According to restaurant owners, the reason is simple. They say it’s to show their customers their appreciation and to say thank you for supporting their small business.
Again, no purchase is necessary. Reyna’s Restaurant is located at 707
Lake, continued. steering the lake community to this final point of the journey. The restoration project, Hickman says begins a whole new chapter for the hydroelectric lake. “The previous dams were almost a 100-year project and with this rehabilitation, we think that this is going to provide a new operating structure for generations to come,” said Hickman. GBRA officials say the rehabilitation project includes the installation of three hydraulically actuated steel crest gates, structural modifications to the spillway, and upgrades to the mechanical, electrical and safety systems. Bonds issued through the Texas Water Development Board’s Clean Water State Revolving Fund program provided the funding for the project.

E. Kingsbury St. Harmon’s Barbecue in Cibolo is also giving this holiday season with the annual Ron, Mike and Ray’s Annual Thanksgiving Give Back on Thursday, the Thanksgiving holiday. They invite anyone in the Cibolo, Schertz or Marion area to stop by this Thanksgiving holiday beginning at 10 a.m. Again, meals will be served until food runs out. Harmon’s Barbecue is located at 102 S. Main St.
Hickman says GBRA always encourages boater safety but residents accessing the lake can expect conditions that were just like they were prior to the project. “The new design is really geared towards living conditions back to the way they were prior to all of the issues that we experienced at the Dunlap dam and that’s what we’ve been able to put back in service, so the lake is back to the conditions that people have been enjoying for decades,” said Hickman. The Lake Dunlap WCID will manage the debt service on the bonds as well as future maintenance and operational costs of the dam while GBRA will continue to own, operate, and give all gross revenues from the sale of the hydroelectric power that is generated to the lake’s WCID. An official grand re-opening celebration for Lake Dunlap is planned for March 2024.

Panthers reel in Tarpons to move on to 3rd round of UIL playoffs Chris Austin
(San Diego) -- The Navarro Panthers advanced out of the Area round of the UIL Class 4A Division-II playoffs with a 29-13 win over the Port Isabel Tarpons on Friday night at Vaquero Stadium in San Diego. The Panthers were unable to score on their first three possessions of the night as the Tarpons took advantage of a Navarro fumble on their second possession to get on the scoreboard first. Port Isabel running back Tristan Garcia scored on a two-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter to give the Tarpons a 7-0 lead. Navarro would finally find the endzone on their fourth drive of the night in the second quarter when quarterback Colton Shuelke connected with tight end Mack Berry on a long 57-yard TD pass. Gabe Rangel would run in the two-point conversion and the Panthers took the lead at 8-7. Berry and Schuelke would hook up again for a long pass on Navarro’s next drive leading to a Diego Chapa two-yard rushing score. After a pass interference on the two-point conversion against the Panthers, kicker Sam Sneed booted a 34-yard extra point to give Navarro a 15-7 lead just before the end of the half.
Port Isabel would get the second half kickoff and take the ball 68 yards downfield and score on a Garza 10-yard run to paydirt on a fourth down play. The touchdown run was the second fourth down conversion by the Tarpon offense on the drive that trimmed the Navarro lead to 15-13 as Port Isabel used more than half the third quarter to bring the score to within two points. The Panthers would answer with a six-minute plus drive of their own that ended with a four-yard Antwoin Mebane rushing score to put Navarro up, 2113 less than one minute into the fourth quarter. Shuelke converted a fourth and five play during the drive with a seven yard run before Mebane’s touchdown. Less than four minutes later, the Panthers would pad their lead to 16 points when Nick Schwarzlose ran the ball into the endzone from three yards out. Shuelke ran in the two-point conversion for the final points of the game. With the win, Navarro moves on to play Sinton in the third round of the UIL playoffs. The Pirates beat Lago Vista, 45-35 in their Area round playoff on Friday night. The Panthers and Pirates will meet on Black Friday at Jourdanton High School. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
