FREE car show to salute the community’s Veteranos, Veterans Public invited to TLU for free food, activities

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) – The observance of American Veterans and the season of giving thanks will all be rolled into one this weekend over at Texas Lutheran University.

That’s because TLU is returning this November with its second annual Dia de los Veteranos celebration. The event is hosted by TLU’s Center for Mexican American Studies (CMAS), the Mexican American Student Association (MASA), and Veterans and Society Together (VAST).

TLU Senior Sophia Sauceda says the event is to honor all veteranos and veterans with a celebration of family and culture.

“The Saturday before Thanksgiving was Dia de los Veteranos to honor our Mexican-

American Veterans who have served.

We celebrate all veterans, and all veterans are encouraged to come as well as all of the community here in Seguin. It’s a free and open event for everyone,” said Sauceda.

Sauceda agrees with TLU officials in that this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better. Veteranos, pg. 5

Area families to gather for annual free Thanksgiving meal this Sunday

Barbecue with all the trimmings on the menu

(Seguin)-- Thanksgiving is a time for people to gather, count blessings, and express gratitude. In the spirit of giving, the city of Seguin is reminding residents of Seguin and the surrounding areas about its complimentary Thanksgiving meal this Sunday, Nov. 24, from 3 to 6 pm at the Seguin Coliseum.

Hosted by the City of Seguin in partnership with local and area churches, “The Table – A Community Thanksgiving Meal” is an opportunity to not only enjoy delicious food, but also bring people together to celebrate community and give thanks.

That’s according to city officials who say that approximately 1,000 plates of barbecue chicken will be served on a first come, first served basis. Again, the event is open to anyone who simply wants to enjoy a holiday meal.

“This event is something we hope the community can enjoy together and take pride in,” said Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. “We look forward to serving and enjoying the company of a range of residents – from the youngest to those who are lifelong residents of Seguin. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors and help build

unity in our community.”

City officials say the free holiday barbecue meal is being made possible thanks to local businesses, organizations, citizens and the numerous volunteers who will be graciously donating their time to prepare and serve food.

The Seguin Coliseum is located at 950 S. Austin.

New board leadership announced in Navarro ISD Longtime board president honored for years of service

(Geronimo) – The Navarro ISD is welcoming new leadership on its board of trustees. Among the most notable changes will be the position of board president. Elected to the seat during Monday’s school board meeting was Melissa Sartain, who was re-elected to the board on Nov. 5.

Sartain tells the Seguin Daily News that she is excited to continue the district’s momentum.

“I am honored and humbled that this board has entrusted me with its leadership. The role comes with its challenges, and I know that I can count on the trustees to support what is best for Navarro’s students, teachers, and staff. I look forward to working with Mrs. (Mandy) Epley in the initiatives that we have in process to address the growth of the district as well as student academic achievement. I would like to personally thank Dr. Lacey Gosch for the nomination and her support of me in this role. I also look forward to working with our newest trustees, Joel Frederick and Becki Stephenson,” said Sartain.

Seguin ISD welcomes new board president

(Seguin) -- Seguin ISD Trustees have elected a new board president. Taking over the leadership position will be District 5 Trustee Denise Crettenden. Crettenden says she looks forward to serving constituents in this new capacity.

“I am excited. I think that we’ve heard a lot from the community and there is a lot of things that we are able to work on moving forward and I’m really interested in hearing what the community has to say and hearing from staff and students and parents and I think we have the chance to do some really great things in the Seguin ISD,” said Crettenden.

Crettenden takes over the role of former Board President Alejandro Guerra. Guerra, who represents District 2, says it was time to hand over the reins.

“It’s mainly personal reasons. I’ve enjoyed it. I know that Denise, Linda and I have been on board for six years and actually, Denise took the officer’s training before I did and so after Cinde (Thomas-Jimenez) left, we just kind of talked and I knew eventually it would come to this point. This seat is not just for one. It’s for anyone who wants to join, and we talked about it. It means I’m still going to be here though. There’s a lot of things we can

still do. It is just that I won’t be sitting in this middle seat,” said Guerra.

The reorganization of the board also includes the election of District 4 Trustee Linda Duncan as the board’s new vice president. Duncan last year served as board secretary. Meanwhile, taking over those secretary duties will be District 3 Trustee Grace Mueller.

The board Tuesday night also administered the oath of office to its newly elected trustees. They included Grace Mueller who returns to the board for a full term along with District 6 Trustee Lisa Burns and newly appointed District 1 Trustee William Dwyer.

The newly elected officers for the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees include, left to right, new Board President Denise Crettenden; Vice President Linda Duncan and Secretary Grace Mueller.

Navarro, continued.

The change in board president was no doubt a celebrated and pivotal moment in the district’s history as it also honored outgoing Board President Renee Rehfeld who chose not to seek reelection.

During the meeting, the district honored her “exceptional service” after serving 16 years (2008-2024)

Noting the district’s accomplishments while under her guidance were Navarro ISD officials.

They said Rehfeld’s “tenure saw enrollment increase over 50 percent, three bond passages for the construction of the current high school, intermediate school, construction of a new high school and future elementary which will add a second campus for grades 2-5 in 2027.”

They also noted that her leadership was instrumental in stabilizing the district’s finances, advocating for competitive staff salaries and improving the quality of education and opportunities for students. Rehfeld says she has enjoyed her role over the years and looks forward to continuing to support the district in any way she can.

“Navarro is very lucky. We are in a great financial position. We are one of the only districts in our area that is working with a balanced budget. So, there are so many positive things that we’ve got going on. If we weren’t in that place, I don’t know that I could have just walked away and said, ‘you know, the district is struggling but here you go,’” said Rehfeld.

Monday’s meeting also marked the swearing-in of new and returning board members. Becki Stephenson and Joel Frederick took the oath of office as newly elected trustees, while Clint Scheib, a returning member, was sworn in for another term.

The reorganization of leadership also announces Clint Scheib as Vice-President, Donna Gilliam as Secretary, and Dan Reinhard as Assistant Secretary for the 2024-2025 term.

Renee Rehfeld is honored by the NISD board for her service to the district.

Veteranos, continued.

“What you can expect at this year’s event is about 25 plus vendors here at our Vendor Market. You can also expect to see around 40 to 100 cars all competing to win the Best in Show title for a $500 grand prize, two DJ’s, eight muralists who will be live painting in front of everyone with spray paint and acrylic paint. There will be a bounce house and face painting for the kids and of course, our turkey raffle which we will be giving out the 10 free turkeys every hour on the hour,” said Sauceda. “We are also going to give out free food to the first 115 people that do come from one of our food trucks. We have about three different food trucks coming if not more.”

She says the cash prize car show is expected to feature a number of entries. Plus, a professional photographer will be on hand to provide a free car photo shoot. Sauceda says the best part of the entire celebration is that everything – food, show and fun are totally free.

“It’s not too late to sign-up. We do not have early registration for the car show. We do have it too where you can come register at 12 o’clock here at TLU to enter your car. All cars are welcome as well as vendors. There’s no fee to sign-up for vendors or cars. Everything is completely free,” said Sauceda.

Among those with cars on display will be

Ladies De Lowriding—an all-female group of lowrider enthusiasts headed up by Mary Alice Carranza—who just happens to be grandmother to TLU senior Jazmin Rios, an Interdisciplinary Studies major who will graduate this December.

“Ever since I was a small child, I remember my grandmother and grandfather always doing something with their lowriders on the weekends. Whether it was fixing them up, cleaning them, or spending the day at a car show,” said Rios. “To my grandmother, it’s one of her passions that just keeps growing more and more every year.”

Lowriders are customized cars with their chassis lowered to be close to the ground. But they’re more than cars—they are a cultural centerpiece representing self-expression, heritage, and art. “They put so much time, energy, and money into their cars and it’s always a treat to

go cruisin’ with them and see so many people appreciate the art,” said Rios. “And I am super proud of (my grandmother) for founding an allwomen’s San Antonio car club, and I can’t wait for them to show off a little at this event!”

Rios said Dia de los Veteranos is important to her family “because we come from a military family and are very proud to be Latinos and where we come from.” Her great grandfather was a hero in the Korean War and received the Purple Heart as well as many other medals and honors. “My dad is also an Air Force veteran, and his dad is an army vet. It’s so important to remember our veterans, especially our Latino veterans for all that they’ve done.”

Dia de los Veteranos will be held Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Langner Hall parking lot located just off of Prexy Street.

Navarro football continues rivalry with Cuero in area round TONIGHT

(Floresville) -- The Navarro Panthers will meet rival Cuero on tonight in the Area round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs.

Navarro ran past Carrizo Springs, 5614 in the Bi-District round last week. Cuero routed La Feria, 83-20 in their first round playoff game last week.

Friday’s playoff between the Panthers and Gobblers will be the 10th meeting between the teams in the last seven years. In some of those years, Navarro and Cuero were in the same district, meeting once in the district season and then again in the postseason.

The Panthers have two of the biggest rivalries in the state. One with Cuero and another with district foe Wimberley. Navarro head football coach Rod Blount says those

rivalries create high standards for all three teams.

“Iron sharpens iron. You want to be the best in the business, you gotta play the best. And Cuero and Wimberley are two of those,” Blount said. “We try to hold ourselves to that standard as well. We’ve shared some good battles and took some victories from them as well. You know when you play Cuero or Wimberley, you’re gonna get better every time you step on the field.”

Tonight’s playoff between Navarro and Cuero takes place at Floresville High School. Kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

(Seguin) -- The Marion Bulldogs play in the Class 3A Division I Area round tonight in

Seguin on KWED.

The Bulldogs won their first playoff game in five years by taking out Jourdanton, 46-14 in the Bi-District round last week. Marion will now face District 15-3A runner-up Goliad. The Tigers blasted Bishop, 63-16 in the BiDistrict round.

Friday night’s Area playoff takes place at Matador Stadium. The game kicks off at 7 p.m.

We’ll have high school football playoff coverage tonight on KWED. We’ll start our coverage with the Navarro Panther report at 6:20 p.m. That will be followed by the Marion Bulldog report and then we’ll have kickoff between the Bulldogs and Goliad Tigers at 7 O’clock from Matador Stadium on AM 1580 and streaming at SeguinToday.com.

countless patient lives. She received various awards and recognitions, including 2023 Unit of Distinction – Inpatient Rehab and two awards for her actions while off duty in resuscitating two individuals who had stopped breathing.

In 1993 and 1995, Lainey became mother to her two adored sons, James and Matthew. She loved taking the boys and their friends on various adventures across the state like crystal hunting, major league baseball games, beach trips, and shopping sprees. As the boys grew older, she fostered in them a love of golf, and the three could often be found enjoying a round together at Starcke Park.

Over the years, Lainey developed and maintained many friendships that she held dear. She treasured her time with friends, whether it was playing with the Golf Girls on Tuesdays, enjoying Wednesday happy hour, or taking trips to the coast. Lainey also made new friends wherever she went and was always the life of the party, drawing people in with her laughter and warmth. You couldn’t be around her for long without hearing one of her unforgettable stories about the mob changing her tires, her adventures with a Secret Service agent, or meeting Bill on the dancefloor, among many others.
