OLG youth to host annual Community Thanksgiving Meal this Wednesday

Deadline arrives for requesting delivery

(Seguin) — While most teens will be sleeping in during this Thanksgiving break, others will be staying busy in the kitchen.

That’s because the youth from the confirmation classes at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church will be prepping food for their Annual Thanksgiving Dinner.

The meal — for the elderly, the homebound and the needy — will be served Wednesday in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Parish Center.

Gloria Reyna, the director of religious education at OLG, says the dinner is all part of service hours and giving back to the community.

“They all have to at least perform eight hours of service for the church, for community and with family. The Thanksgiving Dinner takes four hours so they perform this service so that this way they can get an experience of how it is to serve not only the church, but the community and it gives them an opportunity to work with their family as well,” said Reyna.

While there is adult supervision, Reyna says all the work lies in the hands of the high school students.

“I tell the parents you only supervise. The kids are the only ones that should be cooking the turkey, and they are turkey rolls.

Record number of turkeys delivered to local Thanksgiving tables

(Seguin) – Despite a two-hour delay, the Christian Cupboard on Friday was able to distribute a total of 900 frozen turkeys to local families. An unexpected surplus of turkeys at the San Antonio Food Bank led to the turkey distribution Friday morning outside the Columbus Club Hall of Seguin, formerly the KC Hall.

Lee says the delivery came as a bit of a surprise. That’s after they figured they weren’t going to receive many turkeys to distribute this year. The non-profit group was originally scheduled to distribute from 9 a.m. to noon but she says the truck didn’t

arrive until closer to 11 a.m.

“People like I said, for the most part, were very courteous. They do realize the whole point. A couple of people had to get out of line because they had to go to work, or they had appointments. We could only do what we could do. The food bank was two hours late, but the truck broke down. What can you do with a broken down truck?” said Lee.

The line of cars wrapped around the tail end of the Columbus Hall with the last few vehicles nearing the Wave Pool sign at Max Starcke Park.

Despite the anxious waiting, Lee says in the end, it was a good day

to serve the community of Seguin.

“People were very patient. It’s a beautiful day. Thank you, Jesus. It wasn’t too cold. It worked out great. I had to pray on it hard. I’m on the prayer line anyway so God is sick of me. So, I said ‘just let me get through today with turkeys,” said Lee.

When it was all said and done, Lee says only about 50 vehicles had to be turned away.

Lee says the Christian Cupboard also extends a heartfelt thank you to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church for also contributing turkeys to the event.

Recent images show a trailer in the Right-of-Way at Leissner School Road and Elm Creek Road. They also include dumping ridiculous amounts of trash all over. This illegal dump is causing a safety concern and a line-of-sight issue for drivers.

Reports of illegal dumping increasing throughout Guadalupe County

(Guadalupe County) – Illegal dumping in Guadalupe County is becoming more and more concerning. Officials say the dumping has become so aggressive that even abandoned trailers are being left alongside county roads.

Officials say this problem affects everyone, as it raises costs for taxpayers and jeopardizes public safety. Illegal dumping is more than just a nuisance; they say it is an expense for taxpayers and diverts resources away from other essential community services. In the end, illegal dumping is a crime.

Important reminders being passed along to county residents include: Tree trimming responsibility. If you hire a tree service company, make sure they remove the debris. As a property owner, you are responsible for properly disposing of items on your property.

Right-of-way concerns: Items such as tree limbs, trailers, or other debris left in the public right-ofway can block drainage, impede work areas, and obstruct traffic visibility, resulting in citations.

Community Cleanup Days:

The county organizes designated bulk cleanup days to assist residents in safely disposing of large items. However, these events may be reduced due to rising costs associated with illegal dumping.

Illegal Dumping is a Crime: Improper waste disposal can result in jail time and monetary fines.

The county is also offering ways in which it can help. They say county residents are asked to report illegal dumping to the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office at (830) 379-1224. Provide identifying information so law enforcement

can follow up, and identify license plates, vehicle markers, etc. They are also being asked to properly dispose of bulk items utilizing appropriate facilities. Post Oak Landfill in Luling offers set prices for county residents. The county website includes a list of trash and junk removal services.

Plus, they ask that folks educate their neighborhoods and groups about the impact of illegal dumping.

By taking responsibility and following these guidelines, county officials say they can protect the community and ensure resources are used effectively.

Meal, continued.

They aren’t turkeys where you have to take out the bone but then they also have to make cornbread and vegetables and bring them back,” said Reyna.

The meal, of course, will be a traditional Thanksgiving meal complete with all the trimmings.

“It’s turkey with dressing, cranberry sauce, green beans, mashed potatoes and a cookie,” said Reyna.

This year, the group looks to serve 1,000 plates. Reyna says folks may either drive through, pick up a plate or if they are homebound and meet today’s deadline, they can have a plate delivered to them.

“As far as those that need plates delivered, they need to call our church office up until Monday 5 o’clock. They are not there at noon but it’s from 9 to 12 and 1 to 5 p.m. They can call and leave a message that way on Tuesday, whatever plates that need to be delivered, I can then logistically start placing them so we can get them delivered,” said Reyna.

The meal is free and will be served at the OLG Parish Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The church is located at 409 W. Krezdorn St.

Homebound and elderly needing a plate delivered are, again, asked to contact the church by calling 830379-4338. The deadline to request delivery is 5 p.m. today (Monday, Nov. 25).

Sanchez was aided in his 100yard game by senior linemen Garrett Mann, Isaiah “Snake” Carnahan and Broc Birdwell blocking in front of him

Senior linebacker Hadley Mote finished the game with eight tackles including two for loss. Mote also had a pair of receptions at tight

end on offense. Senior defensive back Caden Hernandez had five tackles with one for loss. Goliad will take on Llano next week in the regional round. Llano won District 13-3A, going 5-0 in district play this season.
