Salvation Army gears up for annual A sergeant with Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office arrested Kettle Campaign, volunteers needed By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
the needy when we are talking about the Salvation Army. We are talking about folks that have experienced some kind of tragedy, a fire, a flood. We help in so many different ways and you know, a lot of people are just one paycheck away from really needing some assistance and so often times, we are able to be there not just for those that are way below the poverty level which we have a lot in Seguin but also to help those who just have a crisis, temporary situation where they need some assistance and that's what the Salvation Army is," said Jones. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The sounds of the holiday season officially gets underway this week with the start of the Salvation Army's Kettle Campaign. The campaign which collects your loose change, dollar bills and checks begins Friday and continues through Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. The kettle campaign recognized by the shiny red kettles and
ringing bells is an annual effort needed to raise the money for the operation of the local unit. Tom Jones, local pastor and member of the Salvation Army's board of directors, says the non-profit organization is vital to helping meet the everyday and emergency needs of local residents.
Helping to better explain the Salvation Army to local residents is Anthony Torres. Torres, is a regional representative for the Salvation Army headquarters office. Torres says in addition to what many of us might see on the local level, there are many tiers of how the Salvation Army assist others in communities across the globe.
"We are not just talking about

(Guadalupe County) -- A sergeant with the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office is on administrative leave without pay after being arrested and charged with assault family violence by the Cibolo Police Department. Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke said longtime officer Robert Nelms was arrested in the incident on Thursday, Nov. 21. Zwicke says it's unfortunate
when these types of incidents happen within any law enforcement department. Zwicke says the case has already been forwarded to the Guadalupe County Attorney's office for further investigation. Zwicke stated, "It's nothing we want to hear but officers are human and are just waiting to hear more." Sgt. Nelms, 37, has served the sheriff's office since Oct. 2006
Preparations underway for annual Thanksgiving Dinner at OLG By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- While most teens today will be playing video games or sleeping in late, another batch of kids will be spending most of their day in the kitchen. That's because the youth from the confirmation classes at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin and St. Joseph's Mission in Redwood are finalizing plans for their Annual Thanksgiving Dinner. The meal -- for the elderly, the homebound and the needy -- will be served Wednesday in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Parish Center. Gloria Reyna, the director of religious education at OLG, says the dinner serves hundreds of plates and remains

one of the largest holiday gatherings in Seguin. "This dinner is for -- well, we say for the elderly and the homebound and all those who are in need but we open it up to everyone and anyone who walks through the doors. It's going to be our 24th year putting this Thanksgiving dinner. It's the second one for me. I'm spearheading it for me but it's basically the work of our confirmation students, their parents and sponsors and we have other people who come in from the community that want to help as well. It's a very big group that is involved in putting this together," said Reyna. Reyna says the high school youth give up part of their holiday break to not only serve but prepare all the food. MIRACULOUS PRAYER
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.
(Seguin) -- The deadline is fast approaching for those of you who want to help welcome in the 2019 Holiday season to Seguin. Wednesday is the deadline to participate in this year's annual Lighted Holiday Stroll Parade in downtown Seguin. The parade takes place on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Seguin. Lindsay Hajek, city of Seguin recreation superintendent, says all sorts of entries are encouraged to take part in this community and holiday spirited parade. "All of our applications can be found on our website

out to see this parade. We do have two categories. We have a commercial and non-commercial category so any businesses can come out and participate and they are commercial and of course, we have schools, churches, other organizations that will fall under our non-commercial category so there is two chances to win," said Hajek.
Hajek says the parade each year grows larger and wants to make sure that everyone is part of the festivities. "Most importantly this is a lighted parade so everybody does have to lights on their trailer, on their vehicles -- we even require horses to have lights on them so that's most important. We also want to have a very family friendly approach of this as well because the whole crew will be
Hajek says the parade kicks off two nights of holiday fun in downtown Seguin. Following the parade, photos with Santa will also be available in the Central Park Gazebo. Again, entry forms can be obtained from the park's office website or they can be picked up in person. Those with questions are also encouraged to call 830-401-2483.

Individuals, families invited to celebrate Thanksgiving thanks to local youth OLG, continued from page 1 "The students are basically doing all the work and I mentioned to the parents of the kids that they are the ones who really should be cooking the turkey. They should be working on fixing the cornbread. They are basically the ones that are doing the majority of the work. We do have parents that are here to help us but basically, the students are the ones who are putting forth all of the work," said Reyna. Reyna says because it's the kids that are putting in all the work, they are the first to benefit from the rewards of helping others. "I think it gives them a really good sense of how important it is to serve their community, how there are so many
people who are in need. They really don't know who they are but when they walk through the doors, I feel like the students get a real deep sense of service and dedication and I feel like they gain just as much as the people who walk through the doors because later on as they prepare for their actual confirmation, they have to reflect on some of the things that they do throughout the years to serve and I believe that the Thanksgiving Dinner is one of the big events that they really come to understand how important it is to serve our community and anyone else who is in need," said Reyna. Reyna says the students invite those who need a meal to make plans to stop by on Wednesday. She says a number of plates
are also already on the schedule to be delivered. She says the meal is simply a community gift. "We'll open the doors at 11 o'clock. We will have plates that can be served for dine-in and we also have people who don't have the time to dinein but we do have where they can come in and pick up a to-go plate. We have people that come in and pick up to-go. Like I said, we don't look at who they are. We look at the fact that they are in need. They want to come in and they want to join us. We don't turn anyone away," said Reyna. The meal is free and will be served at the OLG Parish Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The church is located at 409 W. Krezdorn St.
Ringing in help for the local unit of the Salvation Army KETTLE, continued from page 1 "Most people relate the Salvation Army to the red kettle but emergency disaster is probably the largest thing that we do. It's the greatest thing that we do. During Hurricane Harvey, I can't tell you the amount of people that we helped. We served just about a million servings of food during Hurricane Harvey. We have Angel Tree, the original Angel Tree started with the Salvation Army. Of course, everybody has their variation of that which is great because the need is there. We do prison ministry similar to Angel Tree, we go out to the prisons and we minister. The prisoners there, we try to help some of their families with an Angel Tree Program out of that system. So, that's another way. We do sheltering. That's another way people recognize us. We have soup kitchens that feed people. We do some educational programs in other countries. We do some medical in other countries. People don't realize that we grow and grow," said Torres. More importantly, Torres says donating to the Salvation Army goes directly into helping the people.

"One hundred percent of the money donated during the season is our operating budget for the entire year so when we say that that money helps the people in your community -- it absolutely stays here. It's in a local bank down the street right here. It stays here. That's probably foremost the biggest thing that is different from some of our other fellow people that help people in need. Second is that the way that it is set up here locally, we have access. People have access to the help. We don't have a whole lot of guidelines. There's no income guidelines to what we do. You say you need help and our goal is to do as best as we can. We have some rules about how we are going to help you but for the most part, if you say, 'I'm hungry,' then, we are going to feed you. We are going to do whatever we can to get you something to eat. That's the bottom line," said Torres. In addition to dropping in your loose change into the kettles, volunteers to help ring the bells is just as important. Jones says volunteers are needed to cover all the available hours of this year's campaign. "We've got three stations at Walmart. So, there's
three doors that have to be manned and then there's also Walgreens. We have one bucket set up at Walgreens so that's actually four stations per hour that we need volunteers for," said Jones. The red kettles can be found outside of Walmart from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday except for Sundays. Kettles outside of Walgreens will also be scheduled for eight days during the campaign. Salvation Army volunteers say from October of 2018 through September of 2019, 1,644 individuals were helped by the local unit. This included 1,161 adults and 483 children. Again, they say these were people and families needing shortteam assistance with things such as rent, utilities, housing, etc. They also say that this year's campaign is a week shorter than last year due to how the Thanksgiving holiday falls this year on the calendar. This, of course, means that the group has only 22 days to raise its overall goal of $45,000. Those wishing to ring the bells for the Kettle Campaign are asked to call the Salvation Army Office at 401-4872. They are encouraged to leave a name, phone number and email address so that they may be contacted.

Teens Not Getting Enough Exercise
Flu Season Picking Up
(Geneva, Switzerland) -- Teenagers aren't getting enough exercise as they spend more and more time looking at screens. That's the warning in a new study out Thursday from the World Health Organization. Researchers found that 5 percent of girls and 78 percent of boys aren't getting at least the recommended one hour of physical activity a day. The study's authors call for policy action to increase exercise rates. The study, published in The Lancet Child And Adolescent Health journal, looked at exercise habits in 146 countries between 2001 and 2016.
(Undated) -- The Centers for Disease Control says flu season is hitting early this year, especially in the South and West. The CDC said Alabama, California, Louisiana, Nevada and South Carolina were already experiencing widespread flu outbreaks. At around the same time last year, no states had widespread flu activity. The organization says now is a good time to get a flu shot, if you haven't already.
Flu Season Picking Up
(Undated) -- More than two million people in America don't have running water and basic indoor plumbing. That's the finding in a new report from the nonprofit DigDeep and the U.S. Water Alliance. Race and poverty were the biggest factors in finding those lacking access to clean water. Native Americans, for instance, are 19 times more likely to lack plumbing than white people. African-Americans and Latinos lacked access at twice the rate. Some of the areas most affected include the Navajo Nation, the rural South, Appalachia and Puerto Rico.
