Shopping Seguin gets more REWARDING

(Seguin) -- Shopping with Seguin’s independently owned businesses just got a lot more rewarding thanks to a new program launched by Seguin Economic Development Corporation. The Corporation has joined the Open Rewards Program to provide cash rewards to Seguin citizens and visitors.

For every purchase made at a locally owned business, you earn five percent as cash rewards to use at future purchases with another locally owned business. To earn rewards, download the app through your app store by searching for BluDot Open Rewards or visiting https://www. bludot.io/open-rewards-seguin-tx

Once you have the app, create an account and then start shopping. As you shop, you will upload pictures of your receipts by clicking on the claim/redeem button. As your purchases are verified, you will earn 5 percent back in rewards.

Once you have banked rewards, you can redeem them by completing your purchase like normal, then clicking the redeem button, uploading your receipt, and after verification your Rewards will be paid out via your preferred payout method.

The city of Seguin along with friends and family of City Manager Steve Parker recently honored the memory of his late wife Wendy with the unveiling of one of the squirrels on the city’s Squirrel Trail Program. Seestoryonpage2

Positivity forever preserved on Seguin’s Squirrel Trail

(Seguin) – What was supposed to be a city-wide program has come full circle for Seguin City Manager Steve Parker. Parker says he never thought that his precious memories of his late wife, Wendy, would forever stand still and visible thanks to the creative artistic opportunities found through the city’s Squirrel Trail Program.

Parker, on the first anniversary of Wendy’s death, unveiled the seventeenth squirrel trail project on the lawn of Seguin City Hall.

Parker says the project is unique because the design was a collaboration among friends, family, and San Marcos Artist Rene Perez. He says that together, the clan was able to capture the true heart and identity of his wife perfectly.

“There was a butterfly theme from the beginning because the Dolly Parton theme was ‘Be a Dolly’ and she uses this blue butterfly. We started from that, and then Rene had the inspiration of what it would look like -- he mocked it all up and the girlfriends all tweaked it and it came out exactly the way we wanted it to, and we couldn’t be happier

with it. But it really just captured who Wendy was, her spirit. She was just a positive role model for everybody she met. That’s what it was all about,” said Parker.

At the squirrel’s feet, folks will find the wording “Be a Wendy – a phrase honoring her memory. It also includes reminders such as “Be A Friend” and “Be a Joy.”

Parker says it’s no surprise that folks jumped at the chance to remember his wife’s legacy of positivity.

“This wasn’t even my idea. I had it, but I never said anything and then several people from the city and her friends said, ‘hey let’s do a squirrel in her honor,’ and it kind of snowballed from there,” said Parker.

While he was also part of the creative journey, he admits that seeing his wife’s squirrel at the end of it all was quite emotional. That emotion, however, was short-lived as it again reminded him of the love that his wife had in return for her family, friends, and the Seguin community.

“I picked it up. I had my moment there. That is when I cried and then I remembered Wendy

would not want us to be sad but it was just so emotional because I knew the love that came from this and the amount of people that donated – people that I hadn’t seen in 30 years, since high school were sending checks in to make this happen,” said Parker.

Parker says he couldn’t be more proud of being a part of this community in this season of giving thanks.

“It just shows what this community is about. For us to have lived here five years and have all of these people from the community here today, I hear all of these stories of everybody coming here and doing tours with their grandkids and their families and just wanting to see all the squirrels – just spending family time together – that’s what it is all about so,” said Parker.

The squirrels are sponsored by community members and organizations who then commission a local artist to paint them. The cost of the squirrel is $2,500.

The program is supported by both the city of Seguin and the Seguin Commission on the Arts.

Area school district steps up efforts to decrease terroristic threats

(Schertz) -- In response to the surge of social media threats at the start of the year, the Schertz-CiboloUniversal City ISD located on the county’s west end coordinated with the Cibolo and Schertz Police Departments to increase education and awareness among students and parents of the seriousness of making or posting threatening messages on social media through a campaign, “Threat Regret–Think Before You Speak.”

The campaign centers around a video message specifically for students, and features Schertz and Cibolo School Resource Officers (SROs), students from Samuel Clemens High School and Byron P. Steele High School, and Chief Lowery and Chief Andres, Chiefs of Police for Schertz and Cibolo, respectively.

On November 12, 2024, the Schertz Police Department detained and charged the 12th student of the 2024-2025 school year in its

jurisdiction for making a terroristic threat. In all, there have been 17 students arrested for similar charges district-wide since the beginning of classes in August. Officials say this is an uptick in charges of this nature from the previous two school years, where 14 students were detained and charged for these crimes.

Paige Meloni, Superintendent of Schools, says the influx of social media threats is frustrating and

Seguin is proud to support our small business community by launching the Open Rewards program. Local shopping is vital to the City’s continued growth, as the success of our businesses not only attract and inspires other entrepreneurs to establish themselves locally, but also generates more jobs, recirculates revenue within the community, and ultimately enhances the quality of life for our residents,” said Joshua Schneuker, Executive Director for Seguin Economic Development Corporation.

The rewards program will run until January 31 to encourage shoppers to pick Seguin’s independently owned businesses as they shop throughout the holiday season.

“Downtown Seguin is home to a large concentration of independently owned businesses and weare thrilled that Seguin EDC has launched this program which will benefit our downtown merchants,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director for the City of Seguin, “We thank SEDC for their support and hope this drives more people to choose to shop Seguin throughout the holiday season.”

concerning. She says while all of these threats have been deemed noncredible, it still strains the resources of school and law enforcement officials and instills fear and alarm in parents and students alike. She says no one wants to see a young person charged with felony offenses. However, every school threat will be taken seriously. She says they cannot dismiss these incidents as mere “kids being kids” or jokes; the consequences could be dire, and they cannot afford to take that chance.

Students in grades 5-12 this past week watched the video in an assembly format with their campus administrators, school counselor and School Resource Officer. Additionally, SCUC is asking for help from families to communicate to children the serious consequences and the real impact that accompany making social media threats by watching the video at home.

New Navarro boys basketball coach Jarrett Tyler leads Panthers into season

(Marion) -- The Marion Bulldogs took a battle of Guadalupe County schools Monday, defeating the Navarro Panthers 48-35 at Marion High School.

The Bulldogs were paced by Travis Randle, who had 16 points including four three-pointers. Navarro was led by Elijah Farley, who had 14 points.

The Panthers are led by a new head coach this season. Jarrett Tyler comes to Geromino after spending nine years as an assistant at Klein High School, just northwest of Houston.

Tyler says he’s grateful to be a part of the Navarro community.

“It’s a great area, great people to be around, great kids and I’m thankful to be here,” Tyler said. “I know the kids listen, they want to do right and if they continue to come with that attitude every day in practice, then we’ll continue to do better. That’s my big thing. We just want improvement. I don’t want anybody to come back in a month and see the same team. Just from an effort and execution standpoint. I want us to improve every single day and every single week.

“They’re at it again learning a new system, but they’re great kids and like I said, I’m thankful to be here.”

Following the Thanksgiving holiday break, Coach Tyler and his Panthers will play at the La Grange tournament December 5th through December 7th. Navarro will play their first home game of their season on December 10th when they host the Yorktown Wildcats. Navarro High School will host the Panther Classic tournament December 12th through December 14th.
