KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive set for this Friday

(Seguin) — The community of Seguin has four days in which to gather its donations for this year’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive.

The annual drive will be held Friday, Dec. 6 from 7 to 9 a.m. outside the radio station located at 609 E. Court St.

The Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program, which helps provide gifts to underprivileged kids in Seguin and throughout Guadalupe County, is now collecting toys for boys and girls ages 12 and under.

The Christian Cupboard, Seguin’s food pantry, is also in need of nonperishable food items so that Seguin families don’t go hungry.

Seguin and Guadalupe County officials plus group and business representatives will again all be on hand to help collect your coins, cash, checks, toys, or food donations.

In addition to toys and gifts, Blue Santa is always in need of new or used wrapping paper, scissors, tape and bows. Wrapping items don’t have to be new

and can simply be last year’s leftovers.

Like toys, non-perishable food donations for the Christian Cupboard as well as cash will be collected on Friday on Court Street. Suggestions for food items include beans, rice, pasta, cereal, peanut butter and soups. Other items such as clean egg cartons, recycled bags and toiletries are also encouraged to be donated.

Local school bands and groups will also be returning to perform during this year’s KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive. The Seguin High School Matador Band and Seguin High School Choir will perform outside the KWED studios from 7 to 8 a.m. They will be followed by the Navarro Band from 8 to 9 a.m.

Those unable to make it Friday are encouraged to drop off donations anytime this week at KWED.

The radio station is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This year, Texas Lutheran University thanks to its Black and Gold President’s Council is helping to bolster KWED’s effort by collecting toys for Blue Santa throughout campus and at Dietz Flower Shop, the Seguin Public Library and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce. In conjunction, the TLU group is also collecting new or gently used blankets, coats, jackets, sweatshirts, hoodies, sweaters, gloves, mitten, leggings, sweatpants, scarves and other suitable articles of clothing for men, women and children. All donations will go to those being served by the Thriving Hearts Crisis Center, formerly the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter. The collection effort is being dubbed The Holiday Hope Drive. Donations will also be collected throughout campus including at Dietz Flower Shop, the library and the chamber.

Winter clothing donations can also be dropped off here at KWED located at 609 E. Court St.

TLU receives 2024 Voice Award from New Braunfels Food Bank

(Seguin) -- Every year, the New Braunfels Food Bank honors its Hunger Fighters of the Year— individuals and organizations who have shown exemplary service in the fight against hunger in the community.

The awards are presented at Locally Grown, an annual farm-totable fundraising event that benefits the food bank in its efforts to provide food to those in need in Comal and surrounding counties.

There are four award categories: Food, Money, Time, and Voice and this year, Texas Lutheran University has been chosen to receive the Voice award, which recognizes an individual or organization for spreading the word about the work of the food bank.

“The combined efforts from TLU staff and students have been a blessing,” says Nina Salinas, development manager at the food bank. “The team has been so supportive with advocacy in voice to share our mission!”

TLU has played host to several food distribution events through the food bank, and the TLU nursing program has taken an especially

active role in the food bank’s mission since 2017.

TLU New Braunfels Campus Executive and Assistant Director of Nursing Amy Hart received the award on behalf of the university. Hart says that connecting nursing

students to the food bank has proven to be beneficial to both parties.

“Our students are identifying resources for when they graduate,” said Hart. “They go into low-income settings to meet the residents. They spend time at the food bank packing orders and preparing the meals that go out. They get first-hand information to understand at least a snippet of what our community needs.”

Hart points out that the food

bank “does a whole lot more than food.” It also works to educate the public, making it a valuable clinical partner for TLU Nursing.

For example, nursing students collaborate with a nutritionist to evaluate meals, assist in preparing the meals, and then work with the recipients of those meals through services such as blood pressure screenings.

“The students who are present bring a vibrant presentation to our neighbors,” said Salinas. “They quickly absorb the information for the week and are able to confidently communicate the material. We also wanted to highlight the work we do together with our onsite distribution. This collaboration has been going on for a few years now and we truly appreciate the opportunity to work onsite and see the students attending and receiving services.”

Hart says she was honored to have accepted the Voice award for TLU. “I’m thrilled and humbled and awed.”

Salinas, in turn, says the food bank was honored to share its purpose with the university. “Thank you so much for all you do and for standing strong with us to fight hunger!” County, continued.

Responsive Features are also available. Davila says the features help to optimize mobile, tablet, and desktop devices to ensure a seamless experience across all platforms.

Finally, the website includes Resources from Elected Officials. Davila says here is where county leaders share vital updates, initiatives, and tools to better serve the community.

Officials say they hope citizens take a moment to visit and utilize all the new features. Questions about cleanup days, burn bans and commissioners court meetings are all made to be easily accessed.

Again, the website can be found at GuadalupeTX.gov.

TLU Football’s Magical Season Ends in NCAA Tournament Second Round

MCMINNVILLE, OR -- #RV Texas Lutheran dropped a 65-3 decision to No. 14 Linfield Saturday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Division-III Championship Tournament at Maxwell Field in McMinnville, Oregon.

/7he Bulldogs (9-2) are just the second TLU team to make the NCAA Tournament since their start of NCAA competition in 2000 and the restoration of football in 1998 after being picked to finish second in the SCAC in the preseason. TLU matched the modern era record with its nine wins this season, equaling the 2014 team that also made the NCAA Tournament.

The 2024 TLU team is the first team in program history to make the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs were the first SCAC team to play in the NCAA Tournament since the Bulldogs in 2014.

After falling behind 21-0, TLU answered with an 11 play, 54-yard scoring drive capped off by a 33-yard field goal by Joaquin Rodriguez (San Antonio/Smithson Valley). The key play on the drive was a 24-yard completion from Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central) to Ryker Purdy (New Braunfels/New Braunfels). Purdy would lead the team in receiving with that lone reception while Bosanko would lead the Bulldogs with 50 yards rushing on 15 attempts.

Grayson Kowalski (Sabinal/Sabinal) led the Bulldogs with nine tackles including a sack on Saturday.

The Bulldogs  - a team picked to finish second in the SCAC preseason poll - conclude the 2024 season with a 9-2 record, going 7-1 in the SCAC to claim their fourth SCAC regular season championship, finishing the season as SCAC co-champions with McMurry. The Bulldogs also

compiled the first undefeated season at Bulldog Stadium, a first since the stadium opened in 2014, extending its home win streak to six consecutive games. The Bulldogs also ended the season receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 Poll. The Bulldogs will graduate 13 seniors who played a major part in the Bulldogs playoff run. We thank them for all of their contributions to the Texas Lutheran football program.

For more information on Texas Lutheran football, follow the Bulldogs on X (Twitter) and Instagram (@TLU_Football) and as always you can find updates on all Texas Lutheran athletics on tlubulldogs.com and all official TLU social media channels (@tluathletics on X (Twitter,) @tlu_athletics on Instagram, and @tlubulldogs on Facebook).

Researchers Tout First New Asthma Treatment In 50 Years

(London) -- Researchers at King’s College in London say they’ve found the first new treatment for asthma attacks in 50 years. It’s an injectable drug called Benralizumab that dampens part of the immune system that flares up in patients during asthma attacks and also in those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It’s already used in England for the most severe asthma cases but the research team says it could be administered routinely for two-million attacks a year in the UK alone. They believe it’s a game changer that could “revolutionize” asthma care.

USDA Confirms 25 More Bird Flu Outbreaks In Dairy Cattle (Washington, DC) -- The USDA is confirming 25 more bird flu outbreaks in dairy cattle. All of those outbreaks are in California which boosts the state’s avian flu total to 461 infected herds. The national total in dairy herds is 675 infected herds since March in 15 states. There’ve also been two more confirmed bird flu outbreaks in a backyard flock in Alaska and a commercial turkey farm in Minnesota.

HIV Transplants Expanded

(Washington, DC) -- People with HIV will be allowed to get kidneys and livers from HIV-infected donors under a new rule from the Biden administration. The rule, announced Tuesday by the Department of Health and Human Services, gets rid of the requirement that these kind of transplants only be allowed as part of clinical research. The change came about after what the department calls robust evidence that the transplants are just as effective as those from donors without HIV.

Scientists Identify Anti-Anxiety Brain Pathway

(La Jolla, CA) -- Scientists have identified a brain pathway that deflates anxiety. According to a study published this week in the journal Nature Neuroscience, the pathway regulates voluntary breathing, which lets people manually slow their breathing and calm their minds.
