KWED Christmas Angel contest officially underway

(Seguin) – The KWED Christmas Angel is again reappearing this holiday season. The official 2024 holiday contest is now officially open.

Anyone is invited to write in and explain why they believe their family or someone they know is deserving or needs $500 cash this holiday season.

The contest, which started several years ago, is designed to illustrate the Christmas season’s true spirit of giving and sharing.

As part of the contest, the winning letter will be read live on the air just a few days before Christmas.

The winning letter along with photos of the family will also be printed in a holiday edition of the Seguin Daily News.

All entries must include the name of the person submitting the letter along with their address and phone number.

Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest.

The winning letter will be chosen by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at Seguin Radio KWED or the Seguin Daily News.

All letters for this year’s contest must be submitted by Tuesday, Dec. 17 by 5pm at the radio station located at 609 E. Court St.

Movie Night on the Field returns tonight to Matador Stadium

(Seguin) -- You’re invited to snuggle up as a family for some Matador Christmas magic. The Seguin High School Junior Class will again be hosting a holiday favorite on the big screen tonight at Matador Stadium.

Emily Allen, Seguin ISD’s director of communications, says the fundraising event, called Movie Night on The Field, is open to all Seguin ISD students and families and will feature a holiday favorite.

“The Seguin High School Junior Class is raising money for prom, and

they are inviting the entire community to come out to Matador Stadium and watch Home Alone on our Jumbotron. It’s a great opportunity to come out with your family and enjoy what I’m sure will be some cooler weather and just kind of get into that holiday spirit. Who doesn’t love Home Alone?” said Allen.

Now although they are planning lots of fun, Allen says tonight’s movie does come with a few rules.

“There’s no outside food or drink allowed but there will be concessions available that you can eat in the

stands before going out on the field. You can’t have food and drink on the field. We do need to keep it clean, but you can bring your blankets, your chairs – whatever you want to use to be comfortable on the field and watch the movie,” said Allen.

The gates open at 5:30 p.m. followed by the movie at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for those 9 years old and up and $2 for kids 8 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. Only cash will be accepted. Matador Stadium is located at 1315 E. Cedar St.

Seguin, Guadalupe County to join the rest of the globe during Giving Tuesday

(Seguin) – Don’t forget to add your favorite charitable donation to your list for gifts this holiday season. In fact, today is the day that folks around the world are being encouraged to give that gift. Today, Dec. 3 marks Giving Tuesday 2024. Giving Tuesday is always the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

For more than a decade now, the online giving platform, Giving Tuesday, continues to help millions of Americans pause and reflect on those efforts and movements done in the name of good. Nonprofits say Giving Tuesday is the top day of the year for donations. This day, for many, remains successful in bringing new donors.

A staggering $3.1 billion was raised on Giving Tuesday in 2023. Giving Tuesday provides all non-profits the opportunity to market their own attempts to

showcase their causes.

Giving this Tuesday, however, is not all about money contributions. Individuals are being asked to ponder all sorts of acts of generosity. Organizers say whether it’s making someone smile, helping a neighbor out, or showing up for an issue or people they care about, Giving Tuesday has a way for them to contribute.

Among those utilizing the available marketing tools and reaching out to the Seguin Daily News in hopes of bringing more awareness and dollars to their efforts is Madeline Zwicke, the executive director of Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity.

“Giving Tuesday is a global day that encourages people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. On Tuesday, December 3, global charities, families,

businesses, community centers, students and more will participate in this movement that Unleashes the Power of Radical Giving. More than ever, local hardworking families are in need of affordable homes. Can we count on you to help them get the stability that only homeownership provides? Please give generously. Your gift to Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio & Guadalupe Valley will create a lasting difference to families and children right here in our local community,” said Zwicke. Zwicke adds that 100 percent of all funding sent to the organization stays in the local area building homes.

To give to Habitat or any other local group participating, visit Givingtuesday.org. Donors are reminded their donations are taxdeductible. The day of giving ends today at 11:59 p.m.

Be Alert To Carbon Monoxide Dangers As Winter Storms Hit

(Undated) -- As winter storms sweep across the U.S. they raise the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is warning of the possibly fatal consequences of using portable gas generators to power homes when storms create blackouts. Over 400 people die every year in the U.S. from carbon monoxide poisoning and over 90 percent of the cases are linked to portable generators. The commission recommends never using a gas generator inside your home and placing the units at least 20 feet away from the house with the exhaust pointed away from buildings. They also urge everyone to have a working carbon monoxide detector and smoke alarm on hand.

Environmental Groups Demand EPA Start Monitoring Microplastics In Water

(Washington, DC) -- Over 170 environmental non-profits are calling on the Environmental Protection Agency to begin tracking microplastics in drinking water. The groups filed a petition asking the EPA to add the tracking of microplastics in drinking water to the Safe Drinking Water Act in 2026. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that shed from plastic products that hold chemicals such as PFAS that are linked to a slew of health issues including cancer and hormone disruption.
