Homes, businesses to open doors this weekend for annual Holiday Tour of Homes By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – This holiday season, you no longer have to drive around and check out the Christmas lights outside a home. That's because this Saturday, you’ll be invited to go inside and not only check out the holiday decor but also their historic and creative designs. Tickets are now available for this year's 28th Annual Holiday Tour of Homes. The tour is hosted each year by the Seguin Conservation Society. Marty Keil, of the Seguin Conservation Society, says this year, the tour will include homes from the late 40s, plus two refurbished businesses and the S.S. Memorial and Lodge. "We have two in Keller Heights. We have one on East Humphreys Street and then we have the cabin out on Naumann Road that is part of the S.S. American Military Memorial and then we have a law office at the corner of San Marcos and Court and then we have First United Bank that of course was formerly Seguin State Bank and American Bank," said Keil.

it's a way for people to get a glimpse of the history of Seguin. We do have a couple of businesses that have been completely refurbished from back in the day and then the houses are wonderful opportunities to give people some ideas of what to do with older homes and depending on the houses that are on the tour, there may be some Seguin history tied in with the

people who had lived there or the builders who built the house and we like to showcase houses that have unique architectural features or interesting collections perhaps s o m e antiques for family heirlooms -- just a way to give people an inside look at some of Seguin's histo-

Keil says the idea behind the fundraising effort is to showcase and share some real unique properties within the community. "What we like to do is to showcase houses that have been in Seguin for 50 years at least and last year, however, we did some contemporary homes because we had had people asking for those but this year, we've gone back to the older home and

ry," said Keil. Keil says taking the tour is easy. All individuals need to do is pick a starting site and visit all or as many properties as they wish. "It's a self-guided tour. They can start at any of the house locations and all of the locations are printed on the tickets and also posters that are out in about and when you arrive at the house, you are given a program. Then you keep that program throughout the tour and there are addresses and a general map that shows the location of each house or business and when you arrive at the house, there are docents that are stationed throughout the house that can answer questions and tell you a little bit more information," said Keil. The featured properties for the 2019 Holiday Tour of Homes include the home of Jeff and Melissa Koehler at 1346 Keller Lane; the home of Mickey Rogers and Richard Wilson at 1343 Quail Lane; the home of Ollie Booker at 916 E. Humphreys and the business buildings of Moore Ganske Murr, LLPC at 538 E. Court Street and First United Bank at 200 N. Austin. Again also on this year's property list is the S.S. American Memorial and Lodge located at 450 Naumann Rd. The Holiday Tour of Homes will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Gift & Gourmet, Keepers Interiors or at the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.thetexas.org. A list of each of the sites is also located on the ticket stub. See Photos on page 3.

TLU Christmas Vespers tickets now available pation of the birth of Christ.

“We’ll get those little devils!”

(Seguin) -- Texas Lutheran University is again inviting you over as it shares its annual holiday gift with the community. TLU Vespers returns this weekend to the college campus. Ashlie Ford, TLU director of marketing & communications, says this year's Vespers title is "All Earth is Hopeful." Ford says Vespers is TLU's reminder that Advent is a time of quiet reflection, prayerful waiting and hopeful antici-

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Blue Santa is giving his community elves a few gift ideas in hopes of generating the right types of donations for Friday's annual Seguin Radio KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive. The Seguin Police Department says its Blue Santa Program is lacking toy donations for two of its age categories. Hope Vasquez, who has served as Blue Santa's top elf for years says she's hoping that the bulk of those donations come in during Friday's drive sched-

Tickets are available for reservation online and in the TLU Bookstore. Again, all Vespers services at TLU are free and open to the public. Online ticket reservation is available by visiting www.tlu.edu/events/christmasvespers-2019.

Ford says as of today, there are still tickets for this weekend's performances. However, if tradition holds true, those free tickets will be distributed quickly.

During the performance, San Antonio actress, Sam Carter Gilliam, will also be performing short monologues between the musical numbers which help to weave a story and lend context to the music being performed. A fourth performance is also scheduled off campus at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin.

"Christmas Vespers has been a TLU tradition since 1929 so this year is actually the 79th year that we are doing Vespers. Vespers is a service of word and music featuring the TLU choirs, the band and the TLU symphonic winds and percussion ensemble. This event has truly evolved throughout the years. It first began really as an a cappella performance from the TLU choirs and throughout the years, the TLU bands have become more evolved and there are also readings of Scripture and so it's really a tradition that Texas Lutheran University is proud to have not just for our campus community but for the Seguin community as well," said Ford.

"All performances are free but tickets are required to enter and once again, Christmas Vespers will be held in TLU's Jackson Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7 and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8," said Ford.

uled from 6:45 to 9 a.m. outside the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. Vasquez says toys are especially needed for children zero to two-years-old and for boys and girls ages 10 to 12. She says suggested ideas for infants and toddlers include teethers, blankets, plush toys or educational building blocks. Gifts for the older students are often very difficult to collect for Blue Santa. However, Vasquez suggest ideas such as arts and crafts, jewelry making, board games and remote control cars and airplanes.

Vasquez says although monetary donations are appreciated and needed, she does encourage citizens to go out and purchase a special toy themselves. No violent toys, like guns or knives will be accepted. In addition to toys, wrapping paper, scissors, tape and bows are also being collected. Vasquez says the items don't have to be new and can even be remnants from last year's holiday season. New unwrapped toys, valued at $1520, will be accepted along with nonperishable food items during Friday's

annual toy drive. In addition to toys, non-perishable food donations will also be accepted for Seguin's food pantry, the Christian Cupboard. Food suggestions include pasta, peanut butter, soups, rice, beans, canned vegetables and cereal. Donations can be dropped off in advance in the radio station lobby from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday t h r o u g h Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday.

Study Shows Number Of Young People With Prediabetes

HIV Vaccine Could Be Available In 2021

(Undated) -- A new study is sounding the alarm about the health of young people. Research published in JAMA Pediatrics shows about 20-percent of adolescents have prediabetes. About a quarter of young adults ages 19 to 34 also have the condition marked by elevated blood sugar levels. Prediabetes puts people at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other diseases. The study's authors say their findings highlight the need for more prevention efforts.

(San Francisco, CA) -- Scientists believe a vaccine to fight HIV could be available as soon as 2021. Trials of three different vaccines are close to entering their final stages, prompting experts to be optimistic about the future. Dr. Susan Buchbinder is the director of the Bridge HIV research program at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. She says that even a partially effective vaccine would be a tremendous breakthrough and would really have the power to change the trajectory of the epidemic. People with HIV can take drugs which makes their viral load undetectable, meaning they cannot transmit it, including through sex.

Combination of Diet and Exercise Slows Cognitive Decline in Older Patients (Durham, NC) -- A new study from the Duke University Medical Center finds that diet and exercise could slow the development of cognitive impairment in older patients. The randomized clinical trial found aerobic exercise and a healthy diet improved patients ability to function and to think, remember, and make decisions. For inclusion in the study, patients needed to be 55 or older, have subjective memory or cognitive complaints, be sedentary, and have documented cardiovascular disease at least one additional cardiovascular disease risk factor. For the purpose of the study, aerobic exercise was defined as 35 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, three times per week for six months.

Toddler With Holes In Stomach After Swallowing Magnetic Balls (China) -- A curious three-year-old toddler in China is in a heap of medical trouble after she swallowed 37 magnetic balls that reportedly ripped several holes in her stomach. The girl was suffering from extreme stomach pain when her parents rushed her to the hospital on November 27th, according to AsiaWire. Doctors at Hunan Children's Hospital ordered a scan, which revealed that the magnetic balls had formed a perfect circle inside the child's stomach. The girl's family claims that the magnetic balls were given to her brother as a birthday gift and that she was alone when she swallowed them, according to the report. The child underwent emergency surgery to remove the magnetic balls, and to patch up the damage done.
