The drive will be held today from 7 to 9 a.m. For years, the food and toy drive has been hosted outside our studios at 609 E. An Oogie Boogie Christmas at the Palace Theatre

(Seguin) – A holiday family classic hits the big screen over at The Palace Theatre this weekend and everyone is invited. The Zonta Club of Seguin presents “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” this Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mickey Cabin, Zonta Seguin’s fundraising committee chairman, says the group is excited about launching what it hopes will be a

new holiday tradition for Seguin.

“The tickets are only $10 per person, and they include a ticket for either hot cocoa or lemonade and some cookies and a chance to win some really great door prizes and we are going to have a raffle. We have some really great raffle items that are suitable for children or adults and the raffle tickets are going to be $20 for arm-to-arm length and so

they can drop their little raffle ticket in. Mr. Dan Daniels will be selling popcorn, sodas and candy and then we are going to have a Christmas tree, and it is going to have some little ornaments on it that we are going to be selling and then (Santa) Jack Skellington will be there in a Santa costume, and he will be there for picture taking,” said Cabin.

Community invited to watch as officers swing for the fences this Saturday

(Seguin) – If you don’t find Blue Santa at his workshop this Saturday, then you might want to go check the ballfield. It will be the Battle of the Badges this weekend during the fun, festive yet competitive Blue Santa Toy Drive Softball game between the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office and the Seguin Police Department.

To ensure their best fielding and hitting, the community is invited out to cheer on the officers from the stands. Spectators are encouraged to bring a toy or cash donation for the Christmas Blue Santa Program benefiting all kids 0 to 12 years old living in Guadalupe County.

The fundraising softball game will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Softball Four-Plex located at 833 Nelda St. next to the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds.

Northern Lights Give Back Night to benefit SHS cheer program

(Seguin) – Here’s something worth cheering about this Christmas. Families this Sunday, Dec. 8 are invited to enjoy a holiday light experience and all while supporting the Seguin High School Cheer Program. Northern Lights, a drive through Christmas display, located at 3172 Church Road will be giving back a portion of the cost of each vehicle for those who visit Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m. Money spent at the concession stand will also go to the program during this holiday seasons’s Give Back Night.

This December, Northern Lights will be giving back a percentage of sales to support area high school booster clubs. Those wishing to benefit are asked to contact the business to sign up. A list of those groups to benefit can be found on the Northern Lights Facebook page.

This year’s display is 1.2 miles of road with over half a million lights synchronized with music. Admission is $25 per car. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online. Customers must be sure to let the business know that they are there to support the Seguin High School Cheer group or other booster club at the time of the purchase.

Drive, continued.

Over the years, the radio station has continued to team up with community VIPs to collect your donations from the street during the two-hour period. Loose change, dollars, checks, food, and toys will all be accepted.

Some of our committed volunteers for this year’s food and toy drive include, the Seguin Police Department, the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce, the SeguinGuadalupe County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the city of Seguin, Guadalupe County, the Seguin ISD, the Navarro ISD, Texas Lutheran University, and the Seguin Fire/EMS Department.

Sounds of the season will also be provided this morning by members of the Seguin High School Band and SHS Choir. The bands will perform from 7 to 8 a.m. The Navarro Band will also be returning for the annual tradition along with some Navarro Intermediate School choir students. The groups will be performing from 8:15 to 9 a.m.

The Blue Santa program accepts new gifts for children ages one day old to 12 years of age.

Small stocking stuffers are also encouraged for kids of all ages. In addition to toys and gifts, Blue Santa could also use new or used wrapping paper, scissors, tape and bows. Wrapping items can be either new or simply last year’s leftovers.

Toys for the older batch of students are especially needed. Gift suggestions may include jewelry making kits, football, basketballs, hoop baskets for over the door, cologne and perfume sets, Snuggies, journals, scooters, STEM toys, handheld toys, board games, LED lights and remote-control cars.

As for non-perishable food, items desired include cereals, soups, peanut butter, jelly and canned meats. Other items such as clean egg cartons, recycled bags, laundry

detergent and toiletries are also encouraged to be donated.

The KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6. Donations will also be collected in advance throughout the day in the radio station lobby.

KWED Radio and the Seguin Daily News thank the following sponsors for their contributions to help make this year’s food and toy drive a reality. Those sponsors include Joe Cools AC and Heating; Furniture Warehouse; Beyond Coffee; Sweet Treats; Su Casa Café; Palms Mexican Restaurant; Noe’s Mexican Restaurant; Mi Chula Taco Stand; Heideke’s Country Kennels; Steele Hyundai and Triple Bee Bakery & Boutique.

“The reason we do fundraising for the organization is to afford scholarships for local students and individuals that want to be able to go to college or a trade to further their education and Zonta Seguin is an organization with a mission to empower women and girls worldwide through service and advocacy. Zonta International is a leading global organization of individuals working together to build a better world for

women and girls,” said Cabin. Doors open at 5 p.m. followed by the movie at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. The QR code to purchase tickets in advance is available on the Zonta Club of Seguin Facebook page. There is no cost for kids 2 and under. Seating is limited so families are encouraged to purchase their tickets as soon as possible. Only a limited number of seats will be available for the Sunday movie. The Palace Theatre is located at 314 S. Austin St.

Oogie Boogie, continued.

Texas Lutheran University’s Bryce Hayes Named to CSC 30 Under 30

SEGUIN, Texas -- College Sports Communicators (CSC) has named the recipients of its 30 Under 30 Class of 2024 with Texas Lutheran Sports Information Director, Bryce Hayes, being listed as one of the members of the 30 member class. The honor recognizes emerging athletics communications professionals at all levels of college sports in strategic, creative and digital spaces.

“The remarkable individuals recognized in the CSC Under 30 Class of 2024 represent a diverse and talented group of young professionals working in sports communications today,” 2024-25 CSC President Kevin Trainor said. “This distinguished list of honorees features outstanding sports communicators from throughout our membership. Their innovative approach to blending traditional communications methods with content creation, social media and other emerging technologies will allow us to effectively connect with our audiences while also helping to shape the future of our organization and our profession. Congratulations to all of those included in this year’s class!”

The full 2024 30 Under 30 Class can be seen here.

The recognition honors up-and-coming strategic, creative and digital athletics communications professionals throughout the CSC membership. Candidates are considered for selection based on achievement in one or more areas such as:

• Professional success

• Impact on their athletic department/ conference office

• Service to CSC

Nominees must be 29 years old or younger on December 31, 2024 and a current 2024-25 CSC member.

Of a record 176 nominations submitted, this year’s class includes 10 members from different levels of NCAA Division I, six Division II members, 10 Division III members, two NAIA members, one member from a Canadian institution, and one twoyear college member. The average age is 27.1 years old.

Honorees in the 2024 class were chosen by a voting group composed of the Executive Board of Directors, the Advisory Council, CSC staff, leaders from all CSC committees and selected past winners.

“When you’re in this role I’ve never thought I should be the story as the focus should be on our student-athletes, but it’s a tremendous honor to represent Texas Lutheran in this capacity. Despite what it can look like on the outside, you don’t do this job for credit. People love to call me ‘the hardest working man on campus,’ which I get a chuckle out of, but it’s not about that. It’s always been about the next story or the next way to support our student-athletes, student workers, and co-workers to give them the best experience possible, so sometimes it’s hard to center yourself in conversations.

“Hard work has been instilled in me from day one by my parents, my late grandparents, and my support system growing up. Everyone that’s ever met me knows that I try to live up to that expectation of being the hardest working person around, to a fault at times. I’ve been blessed to be put in situations to succeed from a young age on and off the field as a former student-athlete myself, and I’ve tried to faithfully walk the path God has set out for me. I’ll be forever grateful

to James Hill for pulling a football player out of the stands of a Rhodes College softball game to start my sports information and social content journey as a college freshman and for his continued mentorship as well as his successor, Danielle Donze, who granted me the creative freedom on social media as a student; and to Luke Wagner and Rodney Rogan who trusted me to control the image of their teams on social while I was a college student. I can’t thank Coach Bill Miller enough for taking a chance on a kid from Memphis in the middle of the pandemic to run this department and thank you to the NCAA and the College Sports Communicators for recognizing me in this capacity and for the continued recognition after gracing me with the CSC Inclusion Grant earlier this year.

“I also want to thank everyone that played a role in this process, your kindness knows no bounds. I’ve been blessed with a talented group in my time in Seguin and look forward to seeing student talent like Madi Johnson, Callie Brame, Missy Muras, Ben Coulombe, Brylie Nedd, and Easton Allen earn honors like this in the future. I’m proud to represent Texas Lutheran on the national stage between this honor and the NCAA Inclusion Grant this past summer. While I am the one being honored, it’s a credit to our staff for the work we’ve put in within our department over my tenure. Thank you once again to TLU and to CSC and I look forward to maintaining this standard that you’ve deemed worthy of this honor.”

Seniors Paying More For Healthcare In U.S. Than Other Countries

(Undated) -- Seniors in America are paying more for healthcare than seniors in other wealthy countries according to a new study. A Commonwealth Fund survey shows about 25 percent of American seniors spent at least two-thousand dollars out of pocket on health care last year. Researchers say under five percent of seniors in France and the Netherlands spent at least two thousand dollars. The study shows those in Australia, Germany and Sweden and several other countries spent less on healthcare than seniors in America.

One Third Of Pharmacies Shut In U.S. Since 2010

(Undated) -- Data shows about one third of pharmacies in the U.S. have shut down since 2010. A study published in the journal Health Affairs shows Black and Latino neighborhoods have been hit harder with closures than white neighborhoods. The study’s lead researcher says the closures may widen health disparities when it comes to access to prescription and other essential pharmacy services. Starting in 2018, large pharmacy chains started to merge and close because they were not profitable enough.

Democrats Release Response To Republican COVID Report

(Washington, DC) -- Democrats on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic have their own report in response to the Republican-led panel’s final report. That report concluded the COVID-19 pandemic most likely originated from a lab leak in China. It also accused former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci of trying to suppress that info. The Democrats on Tuesday gave their own version, accusing Republicans of wasting two years on political stunts instead of preparing for another pandemic. It says the Republican report vilified the nation’s scientists and public health officials in an effort to whitewash President Trump’s response to the pandemic. The response did acknowledge that a lab leak was one of a few plausible origins of the pandemic.

Deadly Unknown Disease In Congo Kills More Than 140 People
