KWED Holiday Food and Toy Drive pulls in record donations during annual effort By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

“We’ll get those little devils!”
(Seguin) -- Thank you Seguin and Guadalupe County for again making sure that families eat and that kids find that special something under the Christmas tree. In just two hours on Friday, the community came together to donate $7,677 in cash and checks, 690 pounds of food and a cargo van plus flatbed trailer full of toys. The collected items benefit both the Seguin Police Department's Blue Santa Program and the Christian Cupboard, Seguin's food pantry. The donations were all collected during Seguin Radio KWED's annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive. With money bags in hand, local VIPs worked from 6:45 to 9 a.m. Friday collecting donations from those traveling down Court Street right in front of the radio station. Experiencing the real magic of the annual holiday food and toy drive for the very first time was Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols. Nichols, who was among the first to arrive at this year's collection drive, says he couldn't believe the support that was pouring in from the community. "I think we are filling a gap that kids will not have a Christmas if we don't do the things like this and as a police department, we feel like we have a duty to give
back to the community and we want to be actively engaged with the community and this is unique way to do it. Many communities can do a Blue Santa but I think it's different in Seguin. It's real. I hate to be that cliché but it is real what we are doing as far as just the amount of donations, the toys. They had 100 volunteers Tuesday night wrapping presents and we have more wrapping nights that are booked already so the community really steps up and wows us as a police department, the traditional Blue Santa -- to go out and support those kids and families that are in need -- that are less fortunate than others and to be able to support them so they have a good Christmas," said Nichols.

Guadalupe County and in our community and just again want to encourage people to come out and help kick off the holiday season and want to say thank you on behalf of the county to all those who give," said Kutscher. Among the first to arrive were deputies with the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Zwicke each year assembles his own team of deputies who work hand in hand supporting his colleagues in blue at the Seguin Police Department. After all, he says the toys and food collected benefit families not only in Seguin but throughout the county.
Claus coming to town. I still believe in Santa Claus. I believe in our community, our children. What Seguin and Guadalupe County does sticking together as a community -- coming together for people in need, I think this is an awesome deal that you put on and we want to be part of it," said Zwicke. Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez was also on hand to show his support for the community drive -- a drive that he says he knows impacts many of his Seguin ISD families.
"This is all about Santa

Regina Lee, the director of the Seguin Christian Cupboard, says the food pantry appreciates the holiday drive. She says it's part of an almost two month effort to collect food at the end of each year. "Just like we eat everyday, there are people out there who are struggling to eat and sometimes, they don't eat. There are children sometimes that have to go to school to get a meal simply because their parents are between paychecks or whatever else might come about. So, there's a constant need. Food is

something all of us have to have to survive. Monetary donations are always welcomed because we do purchase milk and eggs and kids will be out of school in a couple of weeks and that means, they'll be taking all of their meals at home and so we want to be able to supply them with what they need to make it," said Lee. Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher was also in the mix of volunteers Friday morning. Kutscher, who also marks the event on his calendar each year, says he thanks all of those who gave and who continue to give year round. "All of the donations go for a great cause. There are quite a few needy families and kids in

Radio station employees join community VIPs in collecting food, toys THANK-YOU, continued from page 2 "It is really important for Seguin ISD because many of the donations are going towards Seguin ISD students and it's a time of year where families have a lot of needs and many families can't afford to buy the basic necessities much less food for a Christmas meal or gifts for their children so the fact that the community comes together in such a huge way to give back is something that I am personally thankful for," said Dr. Gutierrez. New on our VIP list this year was Texas Lutheran University President Dr. Debbie Cottrell. Dr. Cottrell not only brought donations but also brought a few other representatives from the local university.
also returned to help collect food and toys. Like the Seguin ISD, Carter says Navarro families also benefit from such efforts. During those two hours on Friday, volunteers saw several large donations. Many of those donations were toys. Stopping by to drop off a trailer full of toys was Guadalupe County Attorney Dave Willborn. Willborn credits his father for starting the Blue Santa Program in San Antonio. He says his father's legacy continues today as he too leads the same example for his own small children -children who were also happy to stop by and make a donation.
"Our cheerleaders are here. We've got some other staff members here with us today. This is all part of TLU being part of this community, supporting the community and it's easy to get our folks to come out and support because as I like to say 'Seguin needs TLU and TLU needs Seguin,'" said Dr. Cottrell.
"They've been incredibly excited about coming to (give) the donations. We've been talking about it the last couple of months. We are trying to instill the same giving spirit that our father gave to us into them and they really seem to be enjoying it. They like the camaraderie. They like the fun. They like seeing all the toys and being excited that the kids are going to have them," said Willborn.

of toys was the Seguin Parrot Head Club. Too big to unload on site, the group just unhooked the trailer in front of the radio station allowing others in the community to see what members work on throughout the year. A sizable donation also traveled on motorcycle to the annual holiday food and toy drive. The check was brought by several members of the American Legion Riders who pledge supporting a number of charities here in Seguin including of course, the Seguin PD. In between all the donations, the VIPs which included other elected officials and members of the Seguin Fire/EMS Department were kept entertained with live music provided by the Seguin ISD Mariachi Band Program; the Seguin Matador Band and the Navarro Band. The bands kept the morning festive playing all the holiday favorites in the radio station parking lot. With all the great music, Seguin Mayor Don Keil couldn't help but lead the volunteers in a little holiday dancing in the street.
Keil says what the community is able to do in such a short amount of time deserves a little dancing. "I think KWED should be applauded for this every year as well. You do an incredibly great job of making a whole lot of kids happy that otherwise would not be able to enjoy Christmas so thank you for that," said Keil. Seguin Radio KWED today is also extending a thank you to those who have helped to support the food and toy drive this year. This year' list of sponsors include Alex's Tacos , Palm's Mexican Restaurant, Su Casa Cafe, the Donut Palace, Arlan's, Sonic, Court Street Coffee, Manny's, Griffith Ford, Reyna's Mexican Restaurant, Seguin Chevrolet, Century 21 United D&D, Walmart, Soechting Motors, HEB and the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Texans turn tables on Panthers in regional final 66-yard drive and draw the Panthers back within two scores, 28-12.
(San Antonio) - Wimberley avenged its 42-14 October loss to Navarro with a 42-12 win in the Friday afternoon rematch to end the Panthers' season in the 4A Division II Region IV finals at the Alamodome.
Navarro attempted an onside kick after the touchdown, but Wimberley recovered at the Panthers' 49-yard line. Nine plays later, McCollum scored on a one-yard keeper to put the Texans in front 35-12 with 6:17 to play.
The Texans used touchdown passes of 21 and 31 yards from Cooper McCollum to Christian Marshall and a six-yard scoring strike from McCollum to Josh Limely after a Navarro fumble to build a 21-0 cushion by the end of the first quarter. Navarro found its legs offensively in the second period and capped a 13-play, 88-yard drive with Johnny Alegria's 11-yard scamper to the end zone at the 7:33 mark. Sebastian Sneed missed the PAT kick, and the 21-6 margin held through halftime. The Panthers engineered an impressive drive in third quarter and had a chance to make it a one-score game, but Wimberley's defense made a

An unsportsmanlike conduct penatly moved the ball out to the 16 and negated Navarro's
chances of turning the game's momentum with a safety or turnover in the Wimberley end zone. The Texans capitalized on the extra breathing room with an 11-play drive that ended with McCollum's 13-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Watts and extend-
ed the lead to 28-6 going into the fourth quarter. Alegria won a foot race with the Wimberley secondary to the right pylon on a sweep from three yards out with 10:20 left in the game to finish a six-play,
Navarro head coach Rod Blount credited Wimberley for making the critical plays when the Panthers had chances to grab momentum, and commended his team for its unyielding effort in the face of adversity. "They love each other and they play for each other," Blount said. "You see that when somebody at the same position does something great, and the backup or the starter gets excited for them. They play for each other. That's what makes them great." See PANTHERS, page 5

Navarro Season ends in Alamodome playoff loss PANTHERS, continued from page 4 After allowing an average of 27 points through 13 games and at least 34 in four straight, the Wimberley defense turned in its best performance of the year by holding Navarro to 273 total yards and a season-low 12 points The Texans limited Navarro's single-season rushing record holder Euler Deleon to just 37 yards on 15 carries. The senior fullback finished the 2019 campaign with 2,040 yards and 27 touchdowns. Alegria ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. He finished the year with 1,138 rushing yards and 11 scores despite missing significant time with an injury. Billings completed two passes on the night, a 12yarder to Jean "MoMo" Sims and a 30-yarder to Brody Whitson. McCollum, who left the October district meeting in the first half with an injury, went 18-22 through the air for
224 yards and five touchdowns while running for 40 yards and a score in the playoff rematch. Sophomore running-back Moses Wray led Wimberley on the ground with 106 yards on 17 carries. Sims, who ran for 141 yards and two touchdowns in the regular season win over Wimberley, exited Friday's rematch with a first half injury and did not return. The game didn't go the way Navarro planned, but Blount hopes his players can reflect on the 2019 season with their heads held high. "They play with everything they have, they work with everything they have," Blount said. "Great group of young men. They're going to be successful in life because of how they work and how they compete, and that's our goal. Just super proud of the job they did all season long." "Twenty-three and four their record over the last two years, and they played their tails off," Blount said. "They set the tone for us, and set the foundation for what's to come, and we've got to keep working, and get better, and keep the tradition rolling." After winning the District 13-4A-Division II championship and advancing four rounds in the UIL playoffs for the fourth time in school history, Navarro's final 2019 season record is 13-1. Wimberley (11-3) advances to a state semifinal matchup with Silsbee, who knocked off West Orange-Stark 35-28 in the Region III finals Friday evening.

FDA: Tainted Lettuce Sickens Over 100
Salt Lake City Had Worst Air Quality In U.S. Last Wednesday
(Washington, DC) -- The FDA says tainted lettuce from central California has now been linked to over 100 illnesses in 23 states. The new numbers more than double the magnitude of an ongoing E. coli outbreak connected to romaine lettuce grown in California's Salinas Valley. The agency is urging consumers to check the labeling on their lettuce, and to throw it out if it's from that region. E. coli is commonly found among stockyard animals and can cause diarrhea, vomiting and kidney failure.
(Salt Lake City, UT) -- The Environmental Protection Agency says Salt Lake City had the worst air quality in the U.S. on Wednesday. Provo was among the top five cities nationally with the worst air quality, deemed unhealthy for everyone. Some schools were keeping kids from playing outdoors because air pollution can trigger asthma attacks.
California Congressman Wants Expanded Health Care For Vietnam Veterans (Washington, DC) -- A California Congressman is working to expand health care benefits for Vietnam veterans. Democratic Representative Josh Harder is introducing a House resolution to add Parkinson's, bladder cancer, hypertension and hypothyroidism to the list of medical conditions associated with exposure to the chemical Agent Orange. Harder also sent a letter to the White House. He called the Trump administration's decision to block such benefits to some 83-thousand Vietnam vets "despicable."
