Up on the housetop, it's Sheriff Claus... helped residents like Ford share more about who they really are. "Did you ever hear of Big Spring? That's where I was born and raised and then after I got out of high school, I worked at the veterans hospital as a dental assistant. Always down in the mouth as they (laughs) but anyway, I worked there for years until I retired. I never did marry the young man that I was going to marry. He lost his life in the war so I just stayed a stinky old maid but I have several sweet nieces and nephews and they are still really good about coming to seeing me and staying in touch so I'm very blessed," said Ford.
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Sheriff Claus has officially come to town. Sheriff Claus today continues his Christmas deliveries throughout Guadalupe County. Sheriff Claus, a.k.a. Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke, is again making his yearly visit with residents, delivering goodies to those living at area nursing homes throughout the entire county. Although he is not arriving with reindeer, Sheriff Claus is riding in the next best thing, a marked sheriff's office patrol vehicle. Sheriff Claus, who has even brought along a couple of dozens singing elves, says this is the best thing he does all year long. "It's awesome. Like I said before, the one that gets the most out of this is probably me. It's just awesome to see their faces light up and to know that they still believe in Santa Claus like I do," said Zwicke.
Now while Ford does have plans to spend the holiday with family, others in the nursing home are unfortunately not as lucky. That's according to Sheriff Claus who has remained committed to this program for several years.
After being entertained by a badge wearing choir, the elves scatter throughout the nursing home providing each resident with a special gift from Sheriff Claus himself. "It's going to be a lap blanket. It's going to be a Sippy cup. There's a little squeeze toy, another toy, tissue and some other things in there that we put together," Zwicke. Among those who caught the twinkle in Santa Claus' eyes was Wanda Ford, a resident at Guadalupe Valley Nursing Center. Ford says Sheriff Claus sure did make her day and made the anticipation of the holi-
day with family that much more exciting. "It was so just wonderfully sweet," said Ford."I'm looking forward to it with my family the rest of the time. I wasn't expect-
ing Santa," laughs Ford. When questioned if she had asked Santa for anything special this Christmas, Ford answered, "I didn't name anything in particular...just anything,
he wants to give," said Ford. Of course, the time that others took to not only deliver gifts but just to lend a ear
"We've always assisted the Seguin PD's Blue Santa Program and just felt that we needed to reach further into the community and we talked about the rest homes for some time and brought it together where we made it possible. When we started out, the employees gave money the first year. They had a garage sale. We've reached out to the community, Walmart and different ones have helped us. Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is one of our big supporters and now with our Christmas in July campaign, that has really taken off and it's been great," said Zwicke. See SHERIFF CLAUSE, page 2

Area nursing home residents receive special gifts, from Sheriff Claus
"The songs that I'm doing is not just Ritchie Valens songs. That's why I call it 'Jukebox Rocks.' So I'm doing stuff from Buddy Holly, Bobby Darren, Ricky Nelson, the Beach Boys, Dale Shannon. I'm doing a whole variety of rock and roll music -- stuff that people know that come to the show. They'll recognize it -- stuff that they probably haven't heard in umpteen years but we are still out there doing it man," said Anthony. Anthony states, "It's amazing what happens to the audience when I sing Ritchie Valens' songs. They get very excited and want to dance out of their seats to join in. I love that part." He is reported as having a "breathtaking rendition" of Valens bringing captivated fans to their feet and has scored rave reviews from critics. Anthony says he looks forward to giving the audience a high energy performance -- a performance that will also include special guest entertainers Shake, Rattle and Roll, an all-female show group. "It's all me. I'm singing. Every one of those songs on stage, I'm singing, performing. I'm playing my guitar, entertaining. I'm from the old school entertaining. I just don't stand up there and sing a song," said Anthony.

CDC: Flu Season Hits Early
CDC Says More Than 6 Million Children Used Tobacco Recently
(Washington, DC) -- The CDC says flu season has arrived early due to a strain that is not typically seen during this time of year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that the early activity is primarily being caused by a strain of the virus that is most commonly reported among children and adolescents, and has hit largely in the South. At the end of November, the CDC recorded high flu activity in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. The agency said flu activity is expected to continue over the next few weeks.
(Atlanta, GA) -- CDC officials say more than six million middle and high school students have used tobacco in the past month. A CDC survey found that e-cigarettes were the most commonly used products with traditional cigarette use at its lowest point this year. The survey showed that one in three high scholl students and in eight middle school students are using tobacco. Health experts warn that nicotine is highly addictive and can harm brain development in young people.
CDC Updates Number Of Vaping Injuries
(Chicago, IL) -- Scientists have identified a genetic mutation that, they say, causes autism and intellectual disability. It's a gene called USP9X which controls a network of protein that regulate how nerves communicate with each other and interpret information. Researchers at the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and two Australian universities found that mutation of this process affects early postnatal brain development linked to Autism Spectrum Disorder, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. The hope is that this discovery could lead to new treatments.
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is out with the latest number of lung injury cases connected to e-cigarettes. Nearly 23-hundred hospitalized cases have been reported in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and two American territories. The agency says now it will only report hospitalized cases, and has removed 175 non-hospitalized cases. There have also been 48 deaths in over two dozen states. The CDC notes the majority of patients were male and under the age of 35.
