Contested races to appear on March 2020 Primary ballot By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Guadalupe County) -- It looks as though there will be a handful of contested races that voters will get to decide on during the March 2020 Republican Primary Election. Monday was the deadline to officially file for a place on the ballot. There are no locally contested races on the Democratic ballot for Guadalupe County voters. Those races appearing on the Republican ballot include the position of Guadalupe County Sheriff. Incumbent Arnold Zwicke has drawn an opponent. He faces Jimmy Harless, who currently serves as Guadalupe County Constable Pct. 2.
Greg Seidenberger, Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 1, also faces a challenger in the Republican Primary. He goes on to face Candidate Grumpy Azzoz. The seat for Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct. 3 is also up for grabs. Longtime Commissioner Jim Wolverton has chosen not to seek re-election. Candidates seeking the position include former Schertz Mayor Michael Carpenter and
Cedric Edwards.

Two candidates will also go head to head for the position of Guadalupe County Constable Pct. 2. They include candidates Trey Kelly and Mark Reyes. Kelly retired from the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office earlier this year while Reyes currently serves the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office as a sergeant of patrol. The position was vacated by Harless, who is seeking the position of county sheriff. Also appearing on the Republican ballot is the race for the 25th Judicial District seat which serves Seguin and Guadalupe County. Judge William "Bill" Old III is seeking re-election for the position that also includes the counties of Gonzales, Lavaca and Colorado. Old begins the campaign against challenger Jacqueline Phillips Ott. Ott currently serves as a Guadalupe County prosecutor. Positions not drawing an opponent include county attorney, county tax-assessor and constable precincts 1, 3 and 4. Judge Jessica Richard Crawford is also running unopposed for the 2nd 25th Judicial District seat. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, March 3.
This week, local celebrities have been invited to participate in an Hour of Code at Seguin ISD's seven elementary schools. District officials extend a special thank you to Terry Nichols, Seguin chief of police, for taking the time to code with second graders in Mrs. Jessica Casiano's lab at Koennecke Elementary on Dec. 9. “We’ll get those little devils!”
Akiko Fujimoto, music director of the Mid-Texas Symphony, says families are invited over to celebrate the season with their favorite Christmas songs and selections from The Nutcracker. "Holiday music is like this drug that we all love. Every year it makes us feel great. It brings everyone together. It makes us reflect on all the great things
that we have in our lives and especially the people in our lives and it's the most wonderful time of the year really truly. We are going to play a lot of your favorite holiday music arranged for the orchestra and some original music like 'Sleigh Ride' by Leroy Anderson, a classic and then we are going to have a children's chorus from Seguin -- about 100 children on stage with us singing a couple of songs, holiday carols and of course, we want the audience to join us at the end in a carol sing-a-long and I hear a rumor that we might get a visit from Santa Claus as well," said Fujimoto.

Texas Lutheran's Manny Longoria named 2019 AFCA All-America 2nd Team
(Seguin) - Texas Lutheran senior defensive end Manny Longoria (Geronimo/Navarro) is the fifth American Football Coaches Association AllAmerican in TLU Football history after being named Wednesday to the AFCA's Second Team All-America squad for NCAA Division III.
down that gave the Bulldogs a 24-13 lead in the third quarter. TLU's win that day in Abilene was the Bulldogs' second-ever win in HSU's Shelton Stadium. The victory, in the middle of a seven-game conference win streak, put the Bulldogs in position to play for the ASC Championship on Nov. 9 against No. 1-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor.
On this select list of TLU award winners, Longoria joins former running back David Wehmeyer (1973, College Division II), linebacker D.W. Rutledge (1974, College Division II), offensive lineman Jerry Ellis (1975, College Division II), and placekicker Allen Cain (2011, NCAA Division III).
In his senior year, Longoria produced six sacks for 29 yards and 12 tackles for loss for 47 yards. He collected a single-season, career-best 43 total tackles. Longoria ended his playing career with 119 total tackles in 35 career games played.
Counting All-America awards from a variety of associations, Longoria is the 91st playing All-American in TLU Football history.
Longoria already is an Academic AllAmerican®, having claimed that honor in 2018 from the College Sports Information Directors of America.
A three-time all-conference player in the American Southwest Conference and a two-time All-South Region selection, Longoria is a playing All-American in any association for the first time.
Longoria is an Academic All-America® nominee again in 2019. The Academic AllAmerica® Team for NCAA Division III Football will be announced on Dec. 11.
Longoria is TLU's all-time leader in sacks and tackles for loss. A three-year starter, Longoria ended his playing career with 24.5 sacks (158 yards in losses) and 46.5 tackles for loss (226 yards in losses). He
also registered four forced fumbles, three recovered fumbles, a blocked kick, and two defensive touchdowns. With Longoria starting at defensive end for the last 30 games (three seasons), the Bulldogs produced a 21-9 overall record and a 20-7 conference record. In 2019, the Bulldogs won a school-record
eight games in the ASC and won eight games overall for just the eighth time in school history. TLU's runner-up finish in the ASC was a school-best result in the league. In TLU's 38-27 win over then-No. 6 Hardin-Simmons on Oct. 5, Longoria returned a fumble 39 yards for a touch-
Only Longoria and Cain have claimed both AFCA All-America honors and Academic All-America® honors. Cain was a playing All-American and Academic All-American® in 2011. He repeated as an Academic All-American® in 2012.

TLU sophomore Luis Green picks up second career All-America award (Seguin) - Texas Lutheran's recordbreaking men's soccer forward, sophomore Luis Green, is an AllAmerican for a second time in two seasons. Green (Monterrey, Mexico/Smithson Valley (Texas)) was named Thursday to the 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Men's AllAmerica Second Team. Last season, he was named to the association's AllAmerica Third Team. A two-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, Green is the first multiyear playing All-American in TLU Men's Soccer history. The award is the third playing AllAmerica honor in school history. In addition to Green's two honors, TLU Athletics Hall of Famer Roger Gomez was an NAIA Honorable Mention AllAmerican in 1991. In 2019, Green set new TLU DIII-era records for goals scored (20) and total points (43). TLU has been a member of the NCAA Division III since 2002. Green's 20 goals scored and 43 total points (20 goals, 3 assists) were the second-most goals scored and points recorded in a single season in TLU Men's Soccer history. Green's production trailed only the 1994 season totals of former Bulldog Ariel Larre, who scored 22 goals and had 49 total points (22 goals, 5 assists). Green,

CDC Issues Warning Over Packaged Salad Kits
Eating For 10 Hours, Fasting 14 Could Have Weight Loss Benefits
(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC is looking into an outbreak of E. coli infections linked to bagged salads. The agency is advising not to eat or sell Fresh Express Sunflower Crisp Chopped Salad Kits. The salads start with lot code Z and have a best-before date up to and including December 7th. The CDC says eight infections have been reported in three states. Three people have been hospitalized and one person has developed a type of kidney failure.
(San Diego, CA) -- Limiting when you eat each day to a 10-hour window could have benefits for weight loss. A study out of UC-San Diego's School of Medicine, published in Cell Metabolism, followed people doing this for three months. It found if they only ate between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm, and stayed hydrated the other 14 hours, they experienced a three percent reduction in weight. The participants didn't change what they ate, although they ended up consuming fewer calories overall.
Even Moderate Drinking Can Increase Your Risk Of Developing Cancer (Tokyo, Japan) -- Scientists warn that even moderate drinking can increase your risk of developing cancer. The study, done by researchers at the University of Tokyo and the Harvard School of Public Health, involved Japanese adults ages 20 and up. It showed that those who drank two or fewer drinks per day had an elevated risk for cancer, including breast, stomach, prostate, esophageal and colorectal cancer, regardless of how many years they consumed alcohol. In Japan, cancer is the primary cause of death.

Gillibrand Wants It Easier For Vets To Seek Mental Health Care (Albany, NY) -- Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is trying to make it easier for veterans to access mental health care. The New York Democrat says it's clear not enough is being done to address suicides in the military. She's demanding a review of what she calls vague reporting requirements that prevent military members from getting critical care. Gillibrand also points to a study that shows half of military members think seeking mental health help will hurt their careers.
