(Seguin) -- Who needs a red nosed reindeer when you can manage your holiday deliveries by simply flashing those red and blue emergency lights?
The answer, Santa Sheriff.
Santa Sheriff, a.k.a. Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke on Tuesday grabbed the reins for the very last time as he wrapped up a longtime tradition of delivering gifts to area nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
For years, Zwicke has ensured that those living in each of the county’s nursing homes were remembered and gifted with a shiny red bag filled with special gifts made possible by the local community.
This year’s delivery,
however, was bittersweet in that it was Zwicke’s final time to don the red and white bearded suit as he officially retires as the top law enforcement officer for Guadalupe County.
“It’s a little different you know – I’ve been doing this for 13 years now and I don’t know -- maybe later it will hit me but right now, we are having fun. I’ve got a job to do,” said Zwicke.
Zwicke says he remembers quite clearly when the annual holiday program was first introduced.
“We came from helping the Seguin Police Department Blue Santa and then we looked at how can we help others and some of the ladies came up with the rest home idea and Santa, pg. 3
(Seguin) -- As part of an ongoing effort to revitalize downtown Seguin and improve civic infrastructure, the city has taken a significant step toward enhancing the visitor experience by approving the purchase of muchneeded public restroom facilities. These new facilities are expected to serve both residents and tourists, responding to the growing demand for accessible, clean restrooms in the downtown area.
Currently, the public restroom options in downtown Seguin are limited, open only during normal business hours, and insufficient to meet the needs of the increasing number of visitors, especially with the city’s rising popularity as a destination for tourism, local events, and public gatherings.
Throughout the development of the Seguin Downtown Master Plan, the inclusion of public restrooms were consistently highlighted as a priority by residents and stakeholders. Feedback gathered from public meetings and surveys pointed to the need for restroom facilities to serve both special events and daily visitors to downtown Seguin. The consultants who worked on the master plan identified the restrooms as a high-priority project, noting that they would support longer stays and further encourage foot traffic in the downtown area.
In June 2023, the Seguin City Council formally adopted the downtown master plan and allocated funding for the restroom project through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). To bring this project to fruition, the City of Seguin formed a committee to discuss the design and location of the new restroom facilities. The committee, made up of members from the
Main Street Advisory Board, the Historic Preservation & Design Commission, community members, City Council, and city staff carefully considered the best location for the restrooms. After extensive discussions, the northeast corner of Central Park was selected as the site. This location aligns with the recommendations in the downtown master plan, ensuring it will not interfere with the flow of special events while being close to existing infrastructure.
For the design and construction of the restrooms, the city is working with Corworth/Restroom Facilities Ltd, a company based in Marble Falls. The proposed restroom structure will have a brick veneer to match the architectural style of downtown Seguin. The design will feature a flat roof with a cornice and an awning over the restroom entrances, elements that are characteristic of many buildings in the downtown area.
In addition to two ADA-compliant stalls, the restrooms will include several features aimed at enhancing accessibility and convenience for visitors. These include stainless steel fixtures, baby- changing and adult-changing stations, and a CMS platform for maintaining and locking the facilities.
The Seguin City Council approved the purchase on Tuesday, December 3 and the company will begin production of the building soon at their facility in Marble Falls before moving it for placement in the park.
The restrooms will be an essential addition to Seguin’s downtown, providing convenience and comfort for residents, tourists, and visitors attending special events and visiting downtown Seguin.
(Seguin) -- You’ve got just less than one week to enter your nominations for this year’s KWED Christmas Angel Contest.
Anyone is invited to write in and explain why they believe their family or someone they know is deserving or needs $500 cash this holiday season.
The contest, which started several years ago, is designed to illustrate the Christmas season’s true spirit of giving and sharing.
As part of the contest, the winning letter will be read live on the air just a few days before Christmas.
The winning letter along with photos of the family will also be printed in a holiday edition of the Seguin Daily News.
All entries must include the name of the person submitting the letter along with their address and phone number.
Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest.
The winning letter will be chosen by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at Seguin Radio KWED or
Santa, continued.
I thought it was a great idea and so our first year, we had that garage sale and got some money together and through donations, we were able to pull it off and after that, we met and asked if we wanted to continue and of course, we did and then they said there’s only one thing missing and I was like ‘what’s that?’ And then they said, ‘a Santa!’ I said let’s find one and then the room got quiet, and I said, ‘Oh Oh!’ and here I am,” said Zwicke.
Ever since 2011, Zwicke says the program has snowballed into what it is today. He says not only do residents get a special visit from the sheriff, but they also get caroling courtesy of some of his “brown elves.”
“When we started in 2011, we went to six places, six rest homes and now we have built it up to 10 and a lot of that reason was to cover everybody and plus the community’s support has allowed us to do that so the support has been tremendous,” said Zwicke.
Zwicke says over the years, he’s

recalled plenty of special memories – memories that will forever be cherished.
“The first quick memory would be when a little biddy old lady grabbed me and hugged me and said, ‘I’ve always believed in you,’ and you could
see the twinkle in her eye, and it just made my day. The first year, I was scared to do this and now, I can’t wait,” said Zwicke.
With the new incoming Sheriff Joshua Ray taking over the elected office in January, Zwicke says he hopes that he too finds the same support to continue this long-time tradition.
“I believe that it’s very important that we continue this tradition. Let’s not forget the people who paved the way for us. It’s Christmas time and Seguin and Guadalupe County has always been a time of giving and we always want to do our part,” said Zwicke.
Those receiving a special visit on Monday were residents at Guadalupe Valley Nursing Center; Walnut Springs; Seguin Assisted Living; Argent Court and at Nesbit Living & Recovery Center. Tuesday’s schedule wrapped up with the Brooks of Cibolo; Silver Tree in Schertz; Autumn Winds in Schertz; Remarkable Healthcare and Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation in Seguin.
This week Seguin Daily News is sharing some Christmas magic from this month’s issue of Seguin Today Magazine. Area students enrolled in the City of Seguin Parks and Recreation Department’s JAAM After-School Progra shared their letters to Santa. However, before we dropped off the handwritten letters at the U.S. Post Office, we made sure to capture each one. We couldn’t fit them all in the magazine, so we’re extending the Christmas cheer as we count down the days until Santa arrives! See what kids are asking for this year, and don’t forget your hot cocoa!

She was born January 15, 1934 in Seguin to Alvin “Daddy Louse” and Reatha “Todda” Hoermann where she resided happily her entire life and was blessed to be a home maker serving her family and supporting the family business as a mother, grandmother, & great grandmother.

Time spent with family was always a priority whether it be around the Sunday dinner table, celebrating birthdays, or cooking and serving the catch of the day on the Texas coast.
She fervently prayed for each one of us and used scripture to share encouraging notes, seeing us through the ups and downs of life.

When he wasn’t casting a line, he could often be found in his garage, happily tinkering away on his latest project. Juan also enjoyed the thrill of gambling and relaxing with a cold beer in hand. His greatest joy came from being surrounded by his friends and family, sharing laughter, and creating cherished memories. Above all, Juan treasured traveling with his beloved wife, Mary, with whom he shared 22 wonderful years of marriage. His love for life and those around him will always be remembered.

(Washington, DC) -- The number of Americans who believe health care coverage is the federal government’s responsibility is rising. A Gallup poll released Monday found 62-percent of Americans think the federal government is responsible for ensure everyone has coverage. That’s the highest mark in more than a decade. In 2013, a record low of 42-percent of Americans felt that way. It reached its peak in 2006 at 69-percent.
(New York, NY) -- A new report shows the number of men who’ve developed breast cancer while living or working near Ground Zero has skyrocketed. The CDC report says at least 91 men in the World Trade Center Health Program have been diagnosed with breast cancer to date. That’s six times the number first reported in 2018 and is 90 times higher than the national average. Health experts say there are over four dozen cancers and diseases likely linked to the toxins in the air after two of the World Trade Center towers collapsed on 9-11.
(Houston, TX) -- The government is ordering the national milk supply to be tested for bird flu. Experts say this will help narrow down where the virus is spreading. Baylor infectious disease expert Dr. Peter Hotez says, nationwide, there have been just over 700 dairy herds that have been affected. He stressed that the pasteurization of milk kills the virus. And that’s why it’s risky to drink raw milk right now.
(Durham, NC) -- A new study links lead exposure to mental health problems in Americans. The study done by Duke and Florida State Universities analyzed the effect of lead in gasoline, which began in 1923 for car engine maintenance, but was later banned in 1996. The universities found that adolescents who were in contact with car exhaust with lead laced gas had mental health irregularities. Researchers found exposure to lead made “generations of Americans more depressed, anxious and inattentive or hyperactive.” The study connected more than 150-million cases of mental illnesses over the last 75 years with childhood exposure to leaded gas.
