Chamber working toward goal of having each City of Seguin accepting Showcase Seguin booth secured by the end of the year applications for Public Safety Youth Academy event. We have about 500 people that attend that event every single year,” (Seguin) — High school stusaid Bull.
By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) — The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce is counting down more than just the day until Christmas. It is also counting down the days until Dec. 31, the day that it hopes to have all of its booths reserved for the 2020 Showcase Seguin
event. Showcase Seguin has been dubbed as Seguin’s premiere Trade Show. Troy Bull, the new membership and events coordinator for the Seguin Chamber, says even during this hustle and bustle of the holiday season, the chamber is putting in the
work needed to prepare for next year’s show slated for February, 13. “We do have some booth space available so if you are out there and you have a business and you want to do it, there are six premium spots left and 15 regular spots and those start at $415. That’s going to be on Feb. 13 out at the Coliseum and it’s a great

dents considering a career in public safety again have the opportunity to learn from Seguin’s finest. Applications are now being accepted for the Spring 2020 session of the City of Seguin’s Public Safety Youth Academy.
“Tickets are available now. We do have a Roaring Twenties Speakeasy Party coming on the 13th of February. You can buy your tickets now. It’s $30 so you can go to this Speakeasy Party. That’s from 5 to 8 in the evening but during the day, we have a Trade Show. It’s from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s a trade show and a job fair,” said Bull.
“The academy is an opportunity for high school students interested in careers in public safety to learn from our officers and firefighter/EMTs,” said Courtney Toliver, City of Seguin Human Resources Employment Specialist. “Students can expect handson learning rather than lecture alone. Over the years, the program has learned that students really enjoy this type of setting,” said Toliver.
Those wishing to secure tickets for maybe stocking stuffers or who would like to secure a business booth are asked to contact the chamber at 830-379-6382 or go online at seguinchamber.com.
Instruction of the free 10week course is split between the Seguin Police and Fire Departments. Students will receive lessons on K9 handling, rope rescues, use of force training involving simulation, utilizing live fire
hoses and other topics. Applicants must be high school students with good attendance who are in good academic standing. Priority is given to seniors. Class size is limited to 10-15 students to maximize personal interaction. “Not only is this a great opportunity for students considering careers in public safety to receive quality hands-on education, it’s a great opportunity for our police and fire departments to make positive connections with the community,” Toliver continued. Applications are being accepted until December 20. The academy is scheduled to begin January 23 and end on April 9, 2020. Those interested in applying should contact Courtney Toliver at (830) 401-2473 or . Complete requirements are available with the application.

830.379.3277 By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) — The Seguin Public Library is inviting witches, wizards and Muggles of all ages for its weekend holiday celebration. The library on Saturday will be hosting Holiday at Hogwarts. Bailey Jo Simpson, assistant children’s librarian, says the library will be transformed into Ollivander’s Wand Shop
“We’ll get those little devils!”
Mariachi Winter Wonderland Concert set for tonight
“It’s our annual holiday event based on the Harry Potter series. You don’t have to be a fan to attend. It is for all ages. There will be lots of activities for everyone so really you don’t have to be like a huge Harry Potter fan. It’s just really to have a fun thing for the community to do and to inspire kids and adults that reading is fun and just kind of bring everybody together,” said Simpson.
Tree Trimming Removal & Stump Grinding
Simpson says this marks the third year that the library has hosted the event and encourages new families to come out and also take part in afternoon activities. “We have some activities that are similar to Harry Potter classes so for example, one of our favorites is Herbology as it is called in the series and that one is sponsored by the Guadalupe Master Naturalists. They’ve been a really great help to us. They’ve done a lot of great programs for us and basically, they’ll teach everyone about different types of plants and we have a few other fun surprises. We have adult coloring. We have trivia. There will be some great door prizes this year. These are extra special. There is also crafting for all ages. It’s going to be library wide,” said Simpson.
Program Director Rafael Alarcon, says the students are excited to take the stage in front of the Seguin community. He says the magic of Christmas makes this particular concert even more special. “At tonight’s concert, the audience can expect a preview of our show for next semester also our show that we played at contest this fall semester in San

Texas Lutheran University President Dr. Debbie Cottrell, center, led the pack during this year’s annual Polar Bulldog Swim. Dr. Cottrell, however, this year added a one lap run to the mix. Students Thursday afternoon ran from the President’s house to the TLU Krost Trail just before diving into the chilling waters of the Mabee Pool. This marks the 17th year for the tradition, a tradition that offers students a mental break just before final exams. Students who participated received a t-shirt for their bravery.

ing the ones he loved. If you knew him, you knew where you stood with him. His help was free and offered with no hesitation. Anytime he showed up, the day got better and there was always an adventure to be had. He could never sit still and constantly kept his mind busy. New Breast Cancer Drug Acts Like Guided Missile
Cheerios Adding Heart Shapes To Cereal Boxes
(Undated) -- A new drug is offering new hope for those fighting breast cancer. Scientists say it targets aggressive tumors like a guided missile. The drug was tested in almost 200 patients and shrank 61-percent of tumors and wiped out six-percent. Some therapies often stop working as the cancer becomes resistant. This drug kept the cancer from growing longer than usual, an average of 16 months. It's been so successful, the FDA is fast tracking approval and could have it ready by next year.
(Minneapolis, MN) -- Your next bowl of Cheerios will look different. Those iconic "O's" are being turned into heart shapes for the first time in 40 years. General Mills is making the change to celebrate its new heart health campaign. Limited-edition boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios is on store shelves now. The yellow boxes come out next month ahead of National Heart Health Month in February.
New Zealand Orders Skin From US To Treat Volcano Patients
Researchers Suggest Adding Exercise Info To Food Labels
(Wellington, New Zealand) -- New Zealand is ordering 186-thousand square inches of skin from the United States to treat burn patients after Monday's volcanic eruption. Surgeons have been working nonstop on patients with critical burns after the volcano suddenly erupted on White Island, off New Zealand's North Island. Patients are said to be suffering burns of up to 95-percent and Doctor Peter Watson, a clinical doctor at the national burn unit, says they "urgently need more skin grafts". Six people have been confirmed dead following the eruption, while nearly 30 people are in critical condition.
(Undated) -- Food labels already show calories, but what if they also had the exercise needed to burn off those calories? Researchers say it could help reduce obesity. For example, a small bar of chocolate with 230 calories would have 23 minutes of running or 46 minutes of walking. The labels are called PACE which stands for Physical Activity Calorie Equivalent. Researchers say the labels could lead to people eating 200 fewer calories a day. The lead researcher says the PACE labels would also be good on restaurant menus.
