Families invited to Country Christmas at Big Red Barn

(Seguin) -- The doors of the Big Red Barn will swing open this weekend for Country Christmas 2024.

The Texas Agricultural Education and & Heritage Center will again be hosting two nights of Christmas festivities throughout the barn and Heritage village.

Board Member Keith Huebinger says volunteers have been working hard to transform the property into the perfect Christmas spot for local families.

“As we call it the a.k.a. The Big Red Barn – the board has been working and the volunteers have been working on this for weeks now as far as getting everything under Christmas lights whether it be the outdoors or all the interior with Christmas trees and lights so again, very much a traditional and very much family themed (event),” said Huebinger.

The Big Red Barn, however, will be more than just a place to visit the lights.

Holiday Heritage Tour of Homes returns to Seguin this Saturday

(Seguin) --You’re invited inside some of Seguin’s most unique, historic and modern homesteads for a chance to see how others deck the halls for the holidays.

Tickets are now on sale for the 31st Annual Holiday Heritage Tour of Homes being hosted by the Seguin Conservation Society. The Tour of Homes will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Now in order to not compete with the many things already on the calendar during the first month

in December, Marty Keil, the president of the Seguin Conservation Society, says the group opted to move the event to this weekend in hopes of giving more folks a chance to visit one if not all eight properties on this year’s tour list.

“We always include one of the sites being our First Church in our Heritage Village. That is the spot for refreshments.

Who will you nominate?

Winner of KWED Christmas Angel contest to take home $500 cash

(Seguin) -- Do you know someone who could use or is deserving of $500 cash this holiday season? Nominations continue to pour in for this year’s KWED Christmas Angel Contest. The deadline for the contest is 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 17.

For years, the annual KWED Christmas Angel letter-writing contest has blessed local individuals and/ or families who have lost, were struggling or who kept pushing forward despite the obstacles in front of them. The idea for the Christmas Angel was to host a contest that best illustrates the true spirit of giving and sharing during the Christmas season.

Although it’s dubbed a “letter writing contest,” it is not based on the writer’s skills but instead on the reasoning behind why a specific individual or family should be awarded the holiday cash.

As part of the contest, the winning letter will be read by those nominating the family or by someone at KWED live on the air just a few days before Christmas. The winning letter and photos of the individual or family will also be printed in the Seguin Daily News holiday edition.

All letters must be handwritten or typed and must be turned into KWED located at 609 E. Court St.

All letters must include the name of the person nominating. It must also include their address, email and phone number. Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest.

The winning letter will be selected by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at KWED or the Seguin Daily News.

Again, the deadline to submit your nomination for the KWED Christmas Angel Contest is 5 p.m. this Tuesday, Dec. 17

Homes, continued.

But we have the Weinert House, the Mosheim Mansion, the Pedigo’s home which is at 503 S. Austin St. We have two craftsman bungalow styles – one on West Krezdorn and

one on East College and we also have a more colonial traditional style down in the 900 block of East College. We also have a farmhouse out on Highway 20, which is an older house. It’s been there for many decades and refurbished so it’s a great

opportunity to see what can be done with houses from the 1800s, kind of with a contemporary twist that some people have brought into those structures. But they are all decorated for Christmas, so we are excited about that,” said Keil.

Keil says the community is encouraged to stop by each of the properties for a self-guided tour. She says folks won’t be disappointed and might just walk away knowing a little bit more about Seguin’s history.

“At each house, there are docents spread out throughout the house and ticket takers at the entry way just to check off your location. Then you go on into the home and walk through it and are greeted by the conservation society volunteers and homeowners and friends and families of those homeowners,” said Keil.

Pre-sale tickets are $20. Tickets at the door on the day of the event are $25. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Gift & Gourmet, the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce office or at Keepers Interiors.

Christmas, continued.

Huebinger says every inch of the property, including the Texas Pecan Museum, will be bustling with plenty of family activities.

“In addition to that in the Pecan Museum, we are going to have children’s arts and crafts. There’s going to be all sorts of things for kids to make including Christmas ornaments and other neat decorations they can take home with them. At the same time, we will have a hayride going on. We will have a marshmallow roast. We will have Cowboy Cobbler out in the Village. Other live demonstrations that we are going to have is Blacksmithing, rope maker, Seguin Fiber Guild will be here demonstrating and like I said, the Village will be open. All the museums will be open. Also, let me not forget, Santa is going to be here both nights starting at 6 p.m. HEB Buddy will be here as well,” said Huebinger.

Huebinger says there will also be plenty of live music at this year’s Country Christmas. He says the Ag Center will offer two different music line-ups each night.

“We will have two live choirs on Friday. That’s the Seguin High School Chamber Choir and then the McQueeney Baptist Church Choir and Band. Tom Engler will also be performing along with some of his friends. On Saturday, we’ve got three choirs – the German Choir (New Braunfels Gemischter Choir Harmonie). In addition to that, we’ve got Cross Church from here in Seguin also the First Baptist Church Choir from Seguin,” said Huebinger.

Also performing in the Main Hall on Friday will be Kirk Herbold & Friends followed by The Brushy Creek Boys on Saturday.

Huebinger says the Big Red Barn has worked hard to make the event affordable and encourages families to come out and share in the holiday spirit.

“If they need tickets, everything will be at the door. Now, here’s the great

thing. Again, we are very much focused on Christmas and family and so because of that, 25 bucks will get the entire family in. That’s mom, dad and any number of children for 25 bucks. Outside of that, 10 bucks for adults. So, it’s what we consider a really great deal. We prefer check or cash, but we will have credit card available as needed,” said Huebinger.

Also scheduled at this year’s event is a live nativity scene being hosted by Faith Lutheran Church. The live nativity scene, however, will only be available on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.

This year’s Country Christmas will be held Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. The Big Red Barn is located at 390 Cordova Road.

Trio of Bulldogs Earn D3football.com All-Region Honors

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran senior Cameron Welch (New Braunfels/Canyon) and sophomores Troy Tomaselli (San Antonio/ Cornerstone Christian) and Ian Wollard (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge) have been named All-Region III in balloting by Region 3 sports information directors and D3football.com staff. The Bulldogs trio were chosen from 195 nominations by full Division III member schools.

NCAA Division III realigned Division III football into six regions in 2021. Region 3 includes the American Southwest Conference, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, the Southern Athletic Association, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and the USA South Athletic Conference.

Welch was named First Team All-Region while Tomaselli and Wollard were named Second and Third Team respectively. The All-Region honors are a first for all three Bulldogs. Players nominated for All-

Region are eligible to be considered for D3football. com All-America honors, which will be announced Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025.

Welch was amongst the best punters in DivisionIII in 2024. The New Braunfels native finished the season in Division-III with an average of 44.9 yards per punt. With the mark, Welch broke the previous Texas Lutheran program record of 43.0 yards held by Harold Anderson since 1962 and matched the SCAC’s all-time single season mark of 44.9 yards per kick set by Bob Burwell of Rose-Hulman in 1978. Welch ends his collegiate career with a punting average of 40.8 yards, a new program record. The senior, who was a two-time SCAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week during the 2024 season, placed 14 of his 41 punts inside the 20-yard line with just two touchbacks all season.

Tomaselli was one of the top defensive players in the SCAC, finishing as a finalist for SCAC Defensive Player of the Year and earning First Team All-SCAC

honors. The San Antonio native finished the season with 59 tackles, a career-high four interceptions, and five pass breakups in 11 games. Tomaselli finished fifth in the SCAC in tackles.

Wollard was a key member of a TLU offensive line that led the way for a Texas Lutheran offense that finished 25th in the nation in rushing offense, averaging 202 yards per game on the ground. Wollard graded out at 85% at the tackle position for the Bulldogs as rushed for over 2000 yards for just the fourth time since becoming a Division-III institution, finishing the season with 2,222 yards rushing.

Landvatter

Roderick “Ric” Jon Landvatter, age 73, was born January 31, 1951, to William (Bill) and Doris Wigren Landvatter in Redmond, Washington. He passed to his eternal home on December 10, 2024. Ric was the third of four children. Faith Lutheran in Redmond was the family’s church where he began his journey to having a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Surrounded by grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins, he was raised in a loving and close-knit family. Ric graduated from Redmond High School in 1969, and attended Pacific Lutheran University. Ric was blessed with the birth of his two sons, Roderick and Matthew. Experiencing such great love for his sons is but a drop in the bucket when it came to the love God has for us. Ric proudly served his country for six years in the United States Air Force.

Ric’s life could be divided into two phases—the one before the cancer diagnosis and the one after. In 2006, Ric was diagnosed with a very fastgrowing prostate cancer. Ric drove to his church and wrestled with God over the news of the diagnosis. What came out of that battle changed the rest of Ric’s life. He gave it over to God and decided to trust the outcome to the One who gave him life and now held his life in HIS hands. The peace that came over him stayed with him through all the trials yet to come. The first oncology doctor Ric met with gave him a prognosis of 6 months. That was 18 years ago. God had other plans for Ric.

The most amazing gift in the life after cancer diagnosis was finding the love of his life, Diana, who loved the Lord as much as Ric did. As their relationship grew, they made many wonderful memories together. Many centered around their love of travel. They enjoyed attending the 2009 Tour de France as well as following it on tv. They took many cruises

Klein

Alice Zunker Klein, age 89 of Marion, passed away on December 8, 2024. Alice was born on December 1, 1935, in Bexar County, Texas, to Lena F. Krueger and Oscar Andrew Zunker.

Alice exemplified the embodiment of a mother’s true love. She was the nurturing heart of her family, extending love and kindness to everyone she encountered in her wonderful life. She was a mother and grandmother to all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even the occasional extended family friends. She enjoyed many things; dancing, bingo, casino trips, and her farm life, but raising and caring for all of her “babies” was the true passion of her life. Words cannot describe how much she will be missed by all.

and loved camping with their San Antonio Road Runners RV club. Last Christmas found them in Guadalupe in the Southern Caribbean.

Two gifts God gave Ric were the ability to sing and a love for people. Ric got the most joy when using those gifts. He often sang at church or in musicals and thoroughly enjoyed directing a choir. For several years he was a part of Kairos Prison Ministry that helped many in prison find freedom through a relationship with Jesus. Ric also became a volunteer hospital chaplain where he could encourage others with the love of Jesus. Ric often spoke of feeling the closest to God when he was serving him. Ric never missed an opportunity to share his love of Jesus or Jesus’ love for the one he was talking with. Ric’s mission was to pray for the concerns of others.

Ric is survived by his wife Diana, children Rick and wife Erin Landvatter, Matthew and wife Wendy Landvatter, Adam and wife Nicole Strom, Sara and wife Vanessa Strom, his grandchildren Moira, James and Isaiah, and his siblings, Cathy, Gary and Jeff along with many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service celebrating Ric’s life will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Seguin, with the Reverend Jim Craver and the Reverend Dr. Brice Mandaville officiating, including military honors provided by the United States Air Force.
