Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity building anticipation for its New Year's Eve fundraiser By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

plete night of celebration.

(Seguin) -- Time is running out this year for you to get your hands on tickets for this year's Roaring 20's New Year's Eve Party.

"Your ticket includes a complimentary champagne toast at midnight, food and a fun night of jazz and dancing," said Zwicke.

The party is being hosted by Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Zwicke says the fundraising effort is just another opportunity for Habitat for Humanity to turn up its fundraising efforts for the coming year. She says the event is in response to the new goals set for 2020.

Promoting the event is new Habitat for Humanity Director Madeline Zwicke. Zwicke says the group has been working to make Dec. 31 a memorable event. "It's a Roaring Twenties New Year's Eve Party. It's a fundraiser benefiting Guadalupe Valley Habitat for Humanity. It's going to be at the Aumont in the Rose Ballroom just off of Austin Street New Year's Eve from 8 to 12:30 a.m. We are going to have a silent auction. There's going to be food, drinks. There's going to be a jazz band. Choo-Cha Booch will be playing all night and it's a Roaring Twenties theme so 20s attire is encouraged but you don't have to dress up

20s, we just encourage it for a little more fun and then all the proceeds from that event are going directly to our firs build in 2020," said Zwicke. Zwicke says the party will be the group's first large fundraising event. She says the group wanted to make sure it provided the community with yet another way to support the

building program. "This is our first time doing this New Year's Eve fundraiser and to do a big fundraiser too -- we haven't had anything that we do annually so this is our annual event that we are kicking off this year," said Zwicke. Zwicke says tickets are $60 a person and includes a com-

"In the past, we've been building two homes per year. In 2020, we are looking to build a third so we are going to need more funds, more help from the community, more volunteers to get that third house built," said Zwicke. The event, again, will be held from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31 at the Aumont. Tickets are available now at Serenity Boutique, The Shop & Design Associates, Gift and Gourmet or online through the link www.eventbrite.com.

Improvement District (WCID) No. 1.

(Seguin) -- Advocates behind a new taxing district being proposed to help replace the dams on Lake McQueeney will be looking for the Guadalupe County Commissioner Court's blessing during today's meeting.

It was back in September when the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority was ready to drain the lakes because of concerns about the safety of the dams. The Friends of Lake McQueeney say the water district is part of finding a solution so that the dams can be replaced and the waters can remain untouched.

As part of that petition, a public hearing will be heard today during the court's regular meeting. Following the public hearing, the court is expected to take action and better explain the plan. Christmas Angel deadline today

By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) — Today is the deadline for this year's KWED Christmas Angel

contest. The KWED Christmas Angel this year is putting the pen into the hands of teachers, youth ministers, coaches, police officers or youth mentors or any adult in the Seguin area who not only works closely with students but who often times know the specific needs that those families face. The selected winner and their family will receive $500 cash. This year, these adults are encouraged to write as many letters as they wish for the

different individual families they hope to help. However, only one student and their family will be selected for the cash prize. Upon being chosen by the KWED Christmas Angel, the adult, if possible, would be invited to read his or her letter live on the air just a few days before Christmas. The Christmas Angel also reserves the right to determine whether or not the student's name or family will be announced or remain anony-

mous. The name of that student plus the address and phone number of both the family and nominating adult must be included in each entry. The student must also be present to receive the award.

News. Letters without a name or phone number will not be considered for the contest. The winning letter will be chosen by an anonymous panel of judges not employed at Seguin Radio KWED or the Seguin Daily News.

The contest was started a few years ago to help illustrate the Christmas season's true spirit of giving and sharing. The winning letter along with any photos of the family will also be printed in the holiday edition of the Seguin Daily

All letters for this year's contest must be submitted by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17 at the radio station located at 609 E. Court St. The radio station is open Mondays through Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Fridays from

year! Below is a summary of improvements the city of Seguin can look forward to seeing.

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Main Street Advisory Board and Seguin City Council recently approved seven FIX-IT Façade grants for repairs and rehabilitations to seven downtown properties. The FIX-IT Façade grant has been one of the most effective tools for downtown revitalization.

The Seguin Art League at 104 South Austin have been awarded $4,727.50 to complete their $9455.00 project to install new emergency exits and make ADA improvements to their building.

“So many of the downtown buildings have been revitalized using the FIX-IT façade grants,” said Kyle Kramm, Main Street & CVB Director, “Small projects like repairing windows to large projects like removal of slip covers have all been funded in part by FIX-IT Façade grants. The grant program’s flexibility allows it to meet the need of each individual property.” Seguin Main Street is excited to announce all the new improvements that will be starting this new

The second-floor wooden windows at 114 South Austin will be repaired thanks to a $2,022.50 grant. The $7,000 project to repair wooden windows and replace the missing window frame will allow the second floor to be occupied in the near future. The Hot Spot at 212 East Court will be receiving a complete rehabilitation of façade. This will include repair to transoms, painting, and installation of storefront windows to get this place looking like the Hot Spot it was. They have been awarded $10,000 for this $46,300 project taking a underutilized property to a contributing structure

to downtown’s revitalization. Playoff’s Bar and Grill at 204 South Austin will be getting a fresh coat of paint to their façade and have been awarded $2,250 to complete their $4,500 project. Just down Austin Street, the new Schultz Saloon at 109 North Austin will be lighting up the night with their upcoming neon signage. The saloon has been awarded $1,000 to complete their $9,904 project. Lastly the former Starke Sleep Shop will be getting some improvements to two of its facades. Both locations have been awarded $5,000 toward their projects. 104 West Court street will be using their awarded fund towards their $51,904.71 project to replace the storefront windows, install a new fire exit door, paint the façade, and rebuild bulkheads. All the while 100 North Austin, a $31,546.71 project, will be using their funds to remove wood wainscot and replace with brick bulkheads, rebuild transom windows, and re-stucco the southern façade.

DOJ Handing Out Funds To Fight Opioid Crisis

FCC Approves 988 Suicide Hotline In The Works

(Washington, DC) -- A federal agency is lending a hand to fight a national problem. The Department of Justice announced it is providing more than 330-million dollars in funding for communities affected by the opioid crisis. Officials say the funds will be used to help come up with programs aimed at reducing opioid abuse, and develop drug courts to help those suffering from substance abuse issues. The DOJ notes more than 130 people die from opioidrelated drug overdoses each day.

(San Francisco, CA) -- The Federal Communications Commission is voting to establish 988 as the new designated phone number people can call for assistance with suicidal thoughts. The new hotline will be similar to calling 911, but instead will direct callers to emergency services specifically targeted at suicide prevention. A ten-digit hotline already exists, but the plan with the shorter hotline is to break the stigma against seeking out mental health resources. The FCC predicts it will need an extra 50-million dollars a year so call centers keep up with demand.

FDA Investigating Three Separate Romaine Lettuce E-Coli Outbreaks

CDC Estimates 1,300 Deaths From Flu So Far This Season

(Seattle, WA) -- The FDA is investigating a new E. coli outbreak and it's the third one linked to romaine lettuce. More than a dozen people got sick after eating at six salad restaurants in Seattle. The update comes just days after the CDC urged people to throw out Sunflower Crisp bagged salad kits from Fresh Express. At least eight cases are confirmed in three states. All this follows the first outbreak of romaine from farms in Salinas, California. More than 100 people have gotten sick in 21 states. The FDA says the E. coli strains are all different but a common grower has been identified.

(Atlanta, GA) -- The CDC says flu season is underway and already wreaking havoc across the country. Preliminary estimates released Friday show the agency believes 13-hundred people have died from the sickness. It also estimates there have been 23-thousand hospitalizations and about two-point-six million illnesses. The CDC notes much of the activity is being caused by influenza B/Victoria viruses, calling it unusual this time of year. It adds that it's not too late to get a flu shot, which is the best way to prevent the illness.
