Nationally branded car repair shop now owned, operated locally By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- While businesses continue to shut down across the country, one Seguin grad has returned home to own and operate the only stand alone nationally branded car repair service in town. Ryan Boullioun is the owner of the new AAMCO located on East Court Street. The transmission and repair shop officially opened its bay doors on Friday. After years of working for others, Boullioun says it was just time to go at it alone and beginning taking care of customers here in Seguin. “I”ve been in the industry for about nine years and have been wanting to open a business. I did a lot of research and I saw the need here in Seguin in my hometown -- that there was a need for a place that was reliable and that could also provide a good warranty and really do good customer service and so after nine years, I strived to do that myself and venture out on my own and the decision to do it during COVID, it happened the way it happened. We started looking and we really thought, well you know we’ll actually get it open after COVID and everything just fell together like it was meant to be,” said Boullioun. Boullioun says he stands behind the AAMCO name and is excited to extend those benefits to the drivers in the local community.
Ryan Boullioun, owner of AAMCO in Seguin Boullioun, owner of AAMCO in Seguin
“AAMCO was one of the few companies that honestly, they said this is what we provide, this is the warranties we provide -- after that, the shop is yours. We don’t try to control you and everything you do so going with them allowed me to actually still introduce my own business into it. I get to choose what services I have and how much I can offer which was really big for me that I can maintain the name but still let people know that this is family owned and operated and this is my business and I’ll take care of everything you need,” said Boullioun. Just in time for Christmas, Heritage Museum launches 2021 calendar
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – Need an idea for that last minute Christmas gift or stocking stuffer? The Seguin Heritage Museum may just have the answer you are looking for with the release of its 2021 Historical Calendar. Museum Volunteer Donna Brawner says the idea for the wall calendar, itself, was even inspired with a bit of history. She says the calendars were designed to resemble the old Seguin State Bank calendars which years ago were given out to customers. “So, I was just like, let’s do one. I mean we have millions of pictures there. So we sat down, started looking at pictures and picking them out and we tried to pick ones that people really hadn’t really seen before and since we had extra space in the calendars for information about Seguin, we decided to look up some gems about Seguin’s history that people maybe didn’t know and Mrs. John Gesick and Smokey since they have been here all there lives, they were invaluable in providing historical factoids about Seguin,” said Brawner. Brawner says the calendar includes even more history about Seguin – history she says may come as a surprise to many.
“The really interesting thing I loved about this calendar was that as I was researching the buildings and the history of Seguin, Seguin is like so rich in historical firsts that I’m surprised that more people aren’t exposed to this. So that’s why we did the calendar. We did it for a fundraiser. All the money goes to the museum for upkeep and improvements and then, we want to make this an ongoing thing every year,” said Brawner. In flipping through the 12-month calendar, Brawner stops during the month of June where customers are seen arriving downtown for the big sale at Mistrots Department Store on South Austin Street. “The really interesting thing about this picture was is they had the carriages. They had your Model T or A’s whichever ones they are and this crowd, the vehicles stretch off into the distance, all because everything was on sale at this store and then the people standing on top of the building hawking everything. I mean this is priceless and these buildings, most of them are still downtown,” said Brawner. Donna Taylor, museum volunteer and a member of the museum’s board of directors, says like everyone else, the dollars just didn’t come into their doors this past year and hopes that folks support the non-profit
organization by purchasing their calendars this week.
museum is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“How important are the proceeds? They are vital. During the COVID, our director John Gesick who has been there for about 22-23 years did resign and he’s going to be moving to join a daughter out of state and he aided us financially quite a bit so now we are dependent on our membership and grants and fundraisers,” said Taylor.
The calendars are $10 each and can be purchased this Tuesday at the museum or at Gift & Gourmet, the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce office, Parker’s Pharmacy or at the Aumont Hotel
In addition to the Seguin Heritage Museum calendar, Taylor says memberships also make great stocking stuffers. She says memberships are $25 a person or $35 a couple. People may either call or stop by for a membership form. The
Only a limited number of calendars have been printed for this first round of distribution. Sponsoring the museum’s first batch of calendars is Mickey Franz, president of First United Bank. The Seguin Heritage Museum can be reached by calling 830-372-0965. The museum is located at 114 N. River St.

Seguin ISD seeking vaccines for its employees
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) – The Seguin ISD wants Texas Governor Greg Abbott to consider its teachers and staff as frontline workers in its ongoing battle to educate students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees recently passed a resolution requesting that Gov. Abbott designate school district staff members as “frontline workers” so that they be given the appropriate priority in the administration of the COVID vaccine as it becomes available. According to the resolution to the
governor, the Seguin ISD states, “although our district and our personnel as well as districts across the state have responded heroically to the challenges brought forth by COVID-19 regarding the delivery of instruction, issues persist in the quality of learning especially among students that would
most benefit from live, face to face instruction. The Texas Department of Health recently reported 31,678 students a n d 18,742 school employees t e s t e d positive for COVID-19 and the board, having a substantial public
interest in protecting the health and safety of its students, staff and community, therefore, desires to ensure that the school district and community be prepared to the fullest extent possible in light of COVID-19.” The district further added that a substantial number of school district employees are more susceptible to complications and or death from COVID-19 due to age or pre-existing medical conditions. The resolution was mailed to the governor’s office on Dec. 16.
AAMCO celebrates Support Local - Shop Online? grand opening on East Court Street Special by Kyle Kramm, City of Seguin Main Street & CVB Director
AAMCO continued from Page 1 When it comes to getting the job done, Boullioun says there’s no big job he can’t tackle. “We offer everything from oil changes, tire rotations. We do all kinds of computer electronic diagnostics, free vehicle courtesy checks and then we go in and do any kind of major engine repair, transmission repair, rebuilds, remanufactures. We can do it all,” said Boullion. Boullioun says in addition to their competitive prices, AAMCO is in the business of standing behind its work. “Not only are we competitive but I think we are the only place here in Seguin that can offer you a nationwide warranty. Whenever you decide, I’m going to drive up to see some lost family in Georgia, don’t worry you can get it service here. If something happens, your warranty is valid there. Same thing, when they come down to visit you here and they need a helping hand, that’s okay, we can take care of them here but that warranty will carry over to Georgia where they are from,” said Bouillon. As a way to introduce itself to the community, AAMCO in Seguin is now offering a conventional oil change and tire rotation service special for $20. A full synthetic oil change with tire rotation is $30 and then for those diesel engines, AAMCO is offering a $40 conventional oil change with tire rotation. The oil change specials run through Saturday, Jan. 2. Either stop by or make an appointment by calling 830-491-5111. AAMCO is open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The business is located at 408 E. Court St.

Seguin girls hang with Canyon in home district loss
(Seguin) - Seguin girls basketball went toe to toe with New Braunfels-Canyon for three quarters of Friday’s District 26-5A matchup at Goldie Harris Gym, but the Cougars used a 13-4 run in the fourth period to pull away and hand the Matadors a 46-33 loss. Seguin used a three by Reese Brittain and two buckets from Taylor Bode to jump out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter. Canyon responded with six straight points, and the game was knotted up 8-8 at the end of the period. The Mats led by one point on four occasions in the second quarter, but two late free throws put the Cougars up 20-19 at halftime. Canyon scored the first six points of the third period to build a 26-19 cushion. Seguin pulled within two points twice before the quarter ended, and the Cougars held a 33-29 lead heading into the fourth. The visitors opened the final frame with seven straight points to go up by 11, and the Mats came no closer than nine from that point. Cold shooting plagued Seguin down the stretch, but head coach Angela Brittain praised her team for executing the game plan efficiently. “We’re getting better, we’re becoming more patient, we’re doing the right things,” Brittain said. “We just have to be confident shooting, and knowing that when we do shoot, we’ve got to go attack the rim and get the rebound for second point shots.” Bode and Reese Brittain led the Mats in scoring with 11 points apiece. Reagan Schmidt added six, Audriana Rodriguez and Ashlie Aguilar two apiece, Ashley Lingueno one. With a shorthanded lineup, Seguin turned in a strong defensive effort, holding an 8-2 Canyon team that improved to 3-1 in district play 11 points below its season scoring average. Brittain is confident the Matadors will use Friday’s game as a building block in they move deeper into the district schedule. “For the most part, out team is a majority of sophomores,” Brittain said. “We have some girls out from COVID, so that’s kind of hurtful as well. We know that we’re going to learn from this game, continue moving forward, and be ready for them next time.” The loss drops Seguin to 2-3 in district play, 5-8 overall. The Matadors continue the 26-5A schedule Monday with an 11 a.m. road game at Boerne-Champion.
Seguin boys drop district road tilt to Cougars

Jazaya Kyles, Jacob Andrade, and Xander Harrell netted seven apiece. Michael Cornelius and Nic Magallanes chipped in with six each, Louis Flores five, John Jackson and Randall Wilke two apiece. Canyon’s Sebastian Serrano Aponte led all scorers with 24 points. The Matadors are 0-2 in district play, 2-7 on the season. Following graduation, her first teaching assignment was in Donna, Texas, at the tender age of 19. There she met Coach Woodrow Isham, who became her husband in 1947. She continued teaching until the birth of their only daughter, Susannah Lee Isham Willms. Glenna was a stay at home mom until Susannah started school, at which time she returned to teaching. The family moved from the Rio Grande Valley to Seguin in 1966, when Woody became principal of Ball Jr. High School, and Glenna became a Seguin High School corrective reading teacher. During the course of her career there, she became widely known as an innovator for her development and implementation of a curriculum for college bound students. Family vacations and travel were always an important part of her life, and she particularly enjoyed trips with her three sisters, and driving out west with her husband, Woody. Glenna and Woody celebrated nearly sixty-four years of marriage before his death in 2011. After Woody’s death, she moved to assisted living and later Memory Care in New Braunfels. A faithful singer and soloist in church choirs for many years, she retained her beautiful soprano singing voice until near the end. FDA Panel Recommends Moderna COVID Vaccine For Emergency Use
has passed 310-thousand.
(Silver Springs, MD) -- An FDA advisory panel is recommending emergency use authorization for a second coronavirus vaccine. The vaccine by Moderna is expected to get final approval in the next day or so. Trial studies found the two-dose vaccine around 95-percent effective. Last week, the FDA approved a COVID-19 vaccine by Pfizer for emergency use. Trials of Pfizer’s vaccine had similar results to Moderna’s.
COVID Cases, Hospitalizations Hit Record Highs
Pence To Get Vaccinated Today (Washington, DC) -- Vice President Mike Pence will get the coronavirus vaccine this morning. He’s set to do it in front of cameras in hopes of building trust in the vaccine. Second Lady Karen Pence and the surgeon general will also roll up their sleeves for the shot. President Trump has said he’ll get vaccinated at the appropriate time, but he hasn’t publicly made plans for it yet.
Daily COVID Cases Pass 34-hundred For Second Day (Undated) -- Daily coronavirus deaths in the U.S. are topping 34-hundred for the second day in a row. Wednesday’s death toll set a record and Thursday’s was just shy of that number. With nearly seven-thousand dead over two days, the number of lives lost in the U.S. since the pandemic began
COVID-19
(Undated) -- Vaccines are rolling out, but the coronavirus continues to surge across the U.S. The COVID Tracking Project says over 241-thousand new infections were reported on Thursday, the most since the pandemic began. Hospitalizations are also hit a record high at more than 114-thousand. That includes nearly 22-thousand people fighting in the ICU. The Project noted December has been the second deadliest month of the pandemic after just 17 days.
Hospitals Pushed To Brink In Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA) -- The healthcare system in Southern California is being pushed to its limits due to a sharp increase in coronavirus cases. Hospital ICUs are reporting zero-percent capacity, though there is some wiggle room to accommodate a surge. However, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti put it bluntly, saying this is an emergency. While hospitals can always add some beds, the surge in coronavirus cases is making it more difficult for doctors and nurses to treat patients. Garcetti briefed folks from his home, where he’s quarantining because his nine-year-old daughter tested positive for COVID-19.
