The season of giving, collecting continues for the Christian Cupboard and tea, we want all of that. So, HEB runs good sales and so does Walmart and so remember, we are open all year round. We are not open everyday but we are open all year round and we service as much as we can," said Lee.
By Cindy AguirreHerrera (Seguin) -- It might be the day after Christmas, but it doesn't mean that the giving has to stop. In fact, volunteers at the Christian Cupboard, Seguin's food pantry, are hoping to continue the spirit of giving at least through the end of its holiday drive scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 31.
Other items needed at the food pantry include recycled bags, egg cartons, detergent, fresh fruits and vegetables, breads, milk and eggs. Lee says even items such as sugar and flour can be donated. She says these items will be divided up by volunteers and provided to families.
Regina Lee, the director for the Christian Cupboard, says she wants to continue what she describes as a great year of giving and receiving for the local food pantry. She says when it comes to food, the cupboard will take it all. "At this point, oatmeal is nice, cereal, actually we don't buy jelly but jelly is good, soup, Ramen and even if you get those free items at HEB and don't want them, we'll take it -- even ice cream, we have freezers so we will take it. Don't let anything you get be wasted because we will take it and remember, soap, shampoo, deodorant, mouthwash, that kind of stuff, we will take that too," said Lee. Lee says the giving season has been incredible for the
cupboard. However, she says because people have to eat everyday, the need for food is everyday. Lee says individuals can still help the cupboard even if they are away from home or busy
preparing for the new year. "So if you are on vacation and you are in a hotel, those little shampoo bottles and soaps and those things that you don't want and don't
like, bring them to us because we will use them and so the last couple of days of the year and you are looking and thinking 'I had too much cake, pie and everything else and I'm
going on a diet,' clear out those shelves. We'll take that mayonnaise and mustard and ketchup, those hot dogs and everything you are not supposed to have especially that sugar and coffee
Donations to the Christian Cupboard can be made Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Doors are also open every first and third Saturdays of the month. A drop off box for non-glass and nonperishable food items is available 24/7. The drop off box is located on the north end of the building. The food pantry is located at 516 N. Camp St. Monetary donations can also be made by visiting . Food donations can also be dropped off in the lobby of Seguin Radio KWED through Monday, Dec. 30.

(Seguin) -- You no longer have to say that you don't have any plans for New Year's Eve. That's because Seguin Youth Services is extending an invitation for you to join it as it welcomes 2020 during its New Year's Eve Dance.
from the local area and I guess he and I were just talking about bringing them to town and having a family event and it really worked out good because it's for Seguin Services and we can always use the community support for that fundraiser but mostly, our plan is to be a place for people to stay close, come out and hear a good band -- something you could do with your
kids - dance and just really have a good time. So, we are really exited about it. The turnout so far is going really, really good," said Sachtleben. Sachtleben says tickets are $15 pre-sale or $20 at the door. Tickets for teens 13 to 18 years old are $5. She says each ticket provides complimentary party foods plus champagne.
"We are going to have party favors. We are doing a table with party foods. Some people that are calling are going to bring stuff. We've been reserving tables for people. You can hold a table for 10 tickets which is really $150 bucks pre-sale, get your name on a table. We have about maybe two tables left that -- you know we've got good seating everywhere but that are real-
ly, really good seats. But you know, I think the party favors -- we will have champagne on the tables and the bar will be open as far as the alcohol as well as like burgers and fries and there may even be a couple of food trucks available," said Sachtleben. "The money that we are raising -- first, you pay for expenses but hopefully, we'll have some money left over that will go to Seguin Youth Services. Right now, we are doing that for generally just operating support, supplies and stuff like that for projects with the kids. But then hopefully, after the new year, we will save up for hopefully a little Spring Break trip to the beach," said Sachtleben. The Seguin Youth Services New Year's Eve Dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 31. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 830-214-4722. Limited seating is available. Study: Coffee Can Prevent Christmas Weight Gain
FDA Approves New Drug To Treat Migraines
(Undated) -- A new study says coffee can help keep off the extra pounds from all those holiday sweets. Researchers at the University of Illinois say consuming caffeine can limit weight gain and cholesterol production, even when pounding down foods packed with fat and sugar. In experiments with rats, the scientists found that caffeine reduced fat absorption by 22-percent and reduced weight gain by 16-percent. Researchers say people who drink four cups of coffee a day can expect the same benefit.
(Sacramento, CA) -- The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug to treat migraines. The FDA believes the drug, called, ubrogepant, could be a new option for people who can't take or don't respond to migraine medications currently on the market. It's being marketed by Allergan. A recent study shows the drug offered better pain and symptom relief that a placebo. An estimated 40 million Americans suffer from migraines.
Possible Measles Exposure At Airports
Right To Life Delivers Petitions To Ban Abortion Procedure In Michigan
(Chicago, IL) -- Three more airports are warning of possible exposure to measles amid record holiday travel and what the CDC says is the worst year for measles in two decades. At Chicago O'Hare, a person with measles passed through Terminal Three on December 12th and then, on December 17th, was in Terminal One. That same day, two other people with measles were at Richmond Airport in Virginia and the airport in Austin, Texas. There were measles incidents earlier this month at airports in Denver and Los Angeles.
(Lansing, MI) -- Nearly 380-thousand petition signatures are now being examined by the state's Bureau of Elections from Right to Life of Michigan. The organization's Michigan Values Committee submitted the signatures in an attempt to ban dilation and evacuation procedure abortions, common after a miscarriage. If the signatures are validated, lawmakers will have 40 days to pass the ballot measure without the chance of a veto by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, or let it go before voters. Critics of the procedure call it "dismemberment," while abortion rights groups contend it's safe.

Frances Grace “Grandma Fanny” Harkins On Thursday, December 19, 2019, Frances Grace “Grandma Fanny” Harkins, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at the age of 86. Fanny came into the world on September 6th, 1933 in Corpus Christi, Texas to parents Grace and Ed Stock. When Fanny was 17, her family moved to Seguin and she was the proudest graduate of the class of 1952 at Seguin High School. In 1953, she met her match in Jack Harkins and the two were wed in 1954 in Seguin. They have three children: Debi, Nancy, and Jay. Fanny embraced the Catholic community, and over the years participated in the St. Ann’s Circle, Catholic Daughters, worked as the church secretary, Grievance Committee, served as a Eucharistic Minister, as well as on the church council. She was also a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where she served on the church council and as a Eucharistic Minister. In the early 90’s, after many years of chasing her growing grandchildren and holding various clerical positions, Fanny decided to become a real estate agent. Fanny quickly realized she was born for this work and it became one of her passions. She was active in the Seguin Guadalupe County Board of Realtors and served on several of their boards. In fact, while in the hospital she boasted that she even “closed on a house last week”. Fanny traveled the world with her sister, Sophie. She sent her family postcards from weeks long trips to the Middle East, Asia, South America, and Europe. You name it and she’s been there. She was always excited to share her favorite traveling tip to donate her clothes along the way to make room for gifts in her suitcase. After every trip, her grandkids would gather around to see the amazing gifts she would bring back from her many adventures. When she wasn’t traveling on the weekends, you would most likely find her spending time with family and cheering for her beloved Aggie football team. Fanny loved the City of Seguin and the city loved her back. She was proud to be from this community and would tell anyone that would listen. She took newcomers on tours that would last way too long - but she was so excited to share all the special things about Seguin that make this community a home. Her family would joke that she was determined to be in the Gazette everyday as the “Queen of Seguin” - either through her work at the Chamber of Commerce, as one of the first graduates of the Seguin Citizen Police Academy or other volunteering gigs. She prided herself on being
everyone’s grandma and required hugs — not handshakes — from everyone she’d meet. She was a Seguin Chamber of Commerce Ambassador for 30 years where she was presented the Ambassador of the Year award (a couple of times) as well as the Community Service Award. Fanny was also awarded the Zonta Woman of the Year award and the Seguin Gazette Newspaper award for Citizen of the Year. She chaired the Seguin La Posada’s event for several years. Most recently, while in the hospital, Fanny was presented the Seguin Chamber of Commerce “Emeritus Ambassador” award for excellence, dedication and service to our community. During her final days, Fanny did what she did best. She made everyone around her laugh, feel her love, and find peace. Special thanks to the team at GRMC and Guadalupe Regional Hospice Services for all that they did to make her comfortable in her final days. Fanny was a woman who overcame many challenges and yet saw everyday as a blessing and an opportunity. Her determination and love for everyone came from her unwavering faith in God‘s promise of eternal life. She was “Grandma” to so many and we know that she is dancing with Jack in heaven to her favorite Charley Pride song, Crystal Chandelier. Fanny is preceded in death by her husband Jack Harkins. She is survived by sister Sophie Stock Valenta, brother Sam Stock, daughter Debi Holz and husband Kyle, daughter Nancy Mercer and husband Doug and son Jay Harkins; grandchildren Bree Holz Gonzales and husband Roger, Ryan Holz and wife Sarah, Sondra Schriewer Lehmann and husband Keenan, Stefan Schriewer and wife Taylor, Dylan Harkins, Cade Mercer and Michaela Mercer and great grandchildren Raelyn Gonzales and Brenna Gonzales. Pallbearers include Kyle Holz, Doug Mercer, Roger Gonzales, Keenan Lehmann, Stefan Schriewer, Ryan Holz, Dylan Harkins, Cade Mercer, David Mercer, Tim Dudley and D.L. Schraub. Honorary pallbearers: Charles Villeneuve, Billy Harkins, Stanley Naumann, Randy Wilson and JoAnn Richardson. Memorials may be made to the St. James Catholic School, 510 S. Camp, Seguin, Texas, 78155, Seguin Citizens Police Academy Alumni, 350 N. Guadalupe St., Seguin, Texas, 78155, and the Seguin Public Library, 313 W. Nolte, Seguin, Texas, 78155. Visitation will begin Monday, December 23rd, 2019 at 1:45 p.m.at St. James Catholic Church followed by the recitation of the holy rosary at 2:30pm followed by a funeral mass at 3pm and a private interment. The Harkins family asks that you join us following mass to celebrate Fanny’s life and legacy at the Knights of Columbus Hall from 4-8pm. Please join us and raise a glass in celebration of Fanny and a life well lived, a family well loved and a community well cherished. You are invited to sign the guest book at www.treshewell.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin, Texas, 78155, 830-549-5912.
