Seguin ISD super could be on the move Dr. Matthew Gutierrez named one of the finalists for top job in Wisconsin's second largest school district By Darren Dunn (Madison, Wisconsin) -- Seguin ISD Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez has been named one of three finalists for the superintendent's job in Madison, Wisconsin. The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) on Thursday made the announcement. Dr. Gutierrez was contacted by the search firm BWP Associates, which is conducting the nationwide search on behalf of the MMSD Board of Education. After the announcement was made on Thursday, Dr. Gutierrez spoke with KWED Radio and the Seguin Daily News about this opportunity. He says being named a finalist in Madison, Wisconsin will not change how he'll do his job here in Seguin, Texas right now. "What I want to convey is that I remain committed to the work that we are doing here in the district. It's my hope that if I am named (sole) finalist, I have the opportunity to stay here in Seguin this spring to ensure a smooth transition. My plan is to continue to do the work that's outlined in that strategic plan. For as long as I'm here in Seguin, I'm going to continue to focus on my role as superintendent

of Seguin ISD," said Dr. Gutierrez. Bittersweet is probably the best word to describe Dr. Gutierrez's feelings following the announcement. He says he's excited about the opportunity, but also wants people to know that he remains fully committed to doing the work necessary in the Seguin ISD. "I'm really torn about this, and have really been sick to my stomach, because I certainly love the work that I do. But there are times that there are opportunities that are placed in front of you, that I believe you have to consider to learn and grow -- whether (or not) it does turn out to be anything. I'm certainly a strong believer, and believe that God has set forth a plan, just as he did for me here in Seguin ISD, and it has been an absolutely amazing experience. I'm not sure what His plan is, but I certainly trust His plan," said Dr. Gutierrez. Dr. Gutierrez says if he's chosen for the job, he hopes to be able to finish out the school year in Seguin. He says it's important that they continue the work they started here in Seguin. See GUTIERREZ, page 2

BBB offers gift exchange tips (undated) -- If you a received a Christmas present that missed the mark this year, there are some things that you need to consider before returning it to local retailers. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is offering the tips for those who are singing the blues about some of their holiday gifts. The BBB says that in 2018, 31 percent of us returned a holiday gift, with clothing topping the list. But with holiday returns also comes holiday return fraud. Return fraud comes in many forms, including purchasing merchandise for short-term use and then returning the item, returning stolen merchandise, or using reused, stolen or falsified receipts to return merchandise for a profit. But in most cases, consumers are just trying to return wrong sizes or items. Many retailers, both online and brick and mortar, have return policies in place to not only protect the consumer but their businesses as well. If you have something that doesn't fit, or you already have the item or it's just the wrong thing, BBB offers the following tips for returning holiday gifts: -- If you can't find your receipt, many retailers now will return an item using the credit card or debit card used to purchase the item. If it's a gift from someone else, the person's name and phone number can often work in helping the cashier obtain the purchase information. - Know and understand the seller's return policy. We know that most stores list return policies their website or on the back of the receipt. Make sure you fully understand what is required for a return or exchange, and if you have questions, call the store directly to ask about your specific situation. Brick and mortar stores may have different return policies than online counterparts.

- Keep the receipt. Include a gift receipt with all gifts, so it is easier for the recipient to return or exchange the gift if it's not the right fit. - Keep original packaging and ask about restocking fees. Some stores may require products be returned in original purchase condition, unused or unopened. In addition, some merchants charge a restocking or "open box" fee for returns of electronic products or large-ticket items. Make sure you read about these policies and ask questions through email or live chats to make sure you understand the policy. - Bring identification. Because of return fraud, some retailers will ask for identification when making a return. If you are returning or exchanging a gift that you bought, make sure you bring the credit card used to make that purchase in case you don't have the receipt.

credit or product replacement. - Don't delay. In almost every case, stores require you to return within a specific time frame. If you wait too long, you may miss your chance. - and read the fine print before purchasing a rebateeligible item. Rebates are great for getting a good deal, but can come with strict requirements. Make sure you understand how the rebate will be issued. Some rebates need to be redeemed immediately and expire after a certain period of time. Read the instructions carefully and check the return policy. You may experience difficulty returning an item if the rebate requires you to open or send in part of the packaging, such as the UPC or box top. Keep a copy of the submitted rebate materials and note the date on which you sent it in. Mark your calendar for when you should receive the rebate.

Intermittent Fasting Could Bring Numerous Health Benefits (Undated) -- A new study shows that intermittent fasting can bring a number of health benefits. The review in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that either limiting the time period in which one eats or fasting for two days a week could help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and help a person live longer. It could also possibly help prevent obesity, cancer, diabetes and heart disease. However, some doctors note that sticking to a diet of intermittent fasting is difficult and could even result in people eating more.

Women Now Outnumber Men In America's Medical Schools (Washington, DC) -- For the first time ever, women outnumber men in America's medical schools. A new report by the Association of American Medical Colleges shows that a little more than 50-percent of students are women while just over 49-percent are men. It'll take a while, though, for women to play catchup in the medical ranks. Other studies show that 80-percent of physicians ages 65 and up are male. Men dominate certain specialities including orthopedic and neurological surgery while women dominate obstetrics and pediatrics.

More Egg Products From Trader Joe's, Others Recalled

Trump Administration Shuts Down Federal Database That Tracks Pollution

(Gainesville, GA) -- More egg products are being linked to a listeria outbreak tied to at least seven illnesses and a death. Nearly 80 varieties of hard-boiled eggs are being recalled from stores in eleven states. They came from Almark Foods of Georgia and were sold under 30 brand names including Best Choice, Egglands Best, Giant Eagle, Kirkland Signature, Kroger, Lucerne, Giant Eagle and Vital Farms. But that's not all. Trader Joe's is also recalling its brand name egg and potato salad because it believes those items may have been contaminated with eggs from Almark.

(Washington, DC) -- The Trump administration has shut down a federal database that tracks pollution. It's called TOXMAP and was administered by the National Library of Medicine. It was also accessible to the public, allowing people to track factories that produce pollution and to check on progress at Superfund cleanup sites. The EPA has issued a statement saying most of the information will be available elsewhere but some environmentalists think the disappearance of TOXMAP has a lot to do with President Trump's continued rollbacks of pollution policies established by the Obama administration.
