Top county, city law enforcement officials say don't drink & drive

Be safe using fire works Authorities say remember rules, remember they are illegal inside the city

Too much booze, means you lose if you drive this New Year's Eve By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- The top law enforcement officials in the city of Seguin and Guadalupe County are reminding people to play it safe as we head into the New Year's holiday period. There will be parties-a-plenty on Tuesday night as people say goodbye to 2019 and hello to the New Year. Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke says they want people to enjoy themselves, but they want people to make sure that they have a safe way to get home. "My advice is that they welcome in the New Year (responsibly). We want them to have a good time, but also understand that if they plan on traveling (after they've been drinking), not to get behind that wheel," said Zwicke. Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols

agrees. Nichols says the key to a safe New Year's Eve night is to start with a plan. You need to know before you leave how you are going to get home if you've been drinking. "We know folks are going to go out. They are going to have a good time to ring in the New Year. If anyone plans on drinking or consuming alcohol, plan ahead of time who's going to drive. If everybody is going to be drinking, plan on staying where you are at, or maybe use an Uber or a taxi or like that. The last thing we want to do is have a tragedy to ring in the New Year, and have someone seriously injured or killed because of a drunk driver," said Nichols. Nichols and Zwicke say even if you don't plan on drinking heavily, you

still need to make sure that you don't get behind the wheel if you've had a drink or two. "People, especially this time of year, usually drink the hard stuff and a lot of the people don't understand that it sneaks up on you. We want everybody to stay off that road (if they've been drinking). We're going to have deputies and troopers out there to work the highways to make sure that everyone gets home safe," said Zwicke. Staying safe is the key to having a good start to your New Year. Chief Nichols says, whether you are drinking or not, you need to make sure you're driving safely, that you're buckling up, and that you are obeying the speed limits. He says you also need to be alert, and watch out for other motorists on the roadway.

By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- Drinking and driving isn't the only thing you need to worry about this New Year's Eve.

If you plan on shooting off fireworks to ring in the New Year, you need to remember there are some big do's and See DRIVING. page 2 don'ts that you need to keep in

mind. City residents need to remember that fireworks are completely illegal in the city of Seguin. That means you can't possess them or set them off inside the city. Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols says he knows that some will try, but he encourages people to avoid the ticket, and say no to those fireworks

in town this year. "Do not fire off fireworks inside the city. You can receive a citation for it, and we don't want to do that. We don't want to ruin anyone's New Year's Eve. So we ask that you be respectful, and if you want to pop off fireworks, that you go outside the city limits and do it," said Nichols. See FIREWORKS, page 2

Fireworks safety encouraged for New Year FIREWORKS, continued from page 1

Fireworks are not banned in the unincorporated areas of Guadalupe County. Those are those more rural areas that are located outside of any of the city boundaries in Guadalupe County. If you live out in these areas, Sheriff Arnold Zwicke says you still need to be safe. He said you need to make sure you know what you are buying, and you need to know how and where to use them. "They have to be on private property, not on public roadways. Also you need to pay some respect to those fireworks, just as you do with a firearm, because where that projectile ends up -- you're responsible for it. Historically, we have a structure fire or two every year due to the carelessness of fireworks -- not to mention the numerous injuries caused by fireworks," said Zwicke. There's a good chance that you're going to hear the

booms and bangs associated with fireworks on New Year's Eve, that's why Chief Nichols says it's a good idea for people to make sure that their pets are protected and safe during this period. "It's a great time to secure your (pets), especially your dogs. Secure those pets inside, because the fireworks often will send our furry friends scrambling. They are scared, and they'll run off -- often times not to be seen again. So please, if you know that your pet reacts this way to loud noises or things like that, secure your dogs for the night and be prepared for that," said Nichols. The Texas Department of Insurance has published a Fireworks Safety Tip fact sheet. It lays all the things that you should consider if you're planning on using fireworks. The suggestions include:

• Always buy fireworks from an established retail outlet. • Always read and follow label directions. • Always have an adult present. • Only ignite fireworks outdoors in cleared areas away from houses, buildings, dry leaves, and flammable materials. • Keep water handy for fires and emergencies. • Never experiment or attempt to make homemade fireworks. • Light only one firework at a time. • Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks; soak them in water and throw away. • Never give fireworks to small children. • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place. • Never throw fireworks at another person. • Never carry fireworks in your pocket. • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers. • Wear eye protection when shooting fireworks. • And after shooting them, soak fireworks in water before putting them in the trash

Beefed up patrols will be looking for drunk drivers DRIVING, continued from page 1

“We’ll get those little devils!”

"We are seeing more and more calls, especially up on the interstate of reckless drivers and very aggressive drivers. I just want to remind everybody to slow down. You're going to get there. So get there safe, and have patience with people. I taught my kids to drive defensively at all times, and not offensively. So everybody take a breath, slow down, and everybody get there safe. So don't and drive, and have a plan; but again watch out for those other folks out on the road that may not heed that advice and that could be driving while they've been drinking," said Nichols. Sheriff Zwicke says he hopes that motorists

will pay attention to this advice. He says make sure you have a designated driver, or pay the price for a cab. He says that's a small price to pay for your safety and for the safety of the other motorists on the roadway. "You can make that call and spend 25 to 50 bucks (that night), versus $10,000 in the courtroom," said Zwicke. The Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, the Seguin Police Department and the local Highway Patrol office will all have beefed up patrols Tuesday night in hopes of making sure that people stay safe during this busy holiday period.

Research out of Johns Hopkins University finds that restricting your eating to six to eight hours per day helps regulate glucose, blood pressure and heart rate. Another apporach is so-called 5:2 intermittent fasting in which people limit themselves to one moderate-sized meal two days a week. In the study, Dr. Mark Mattson says that intermittent fasting may be able to help with many health conditions, in addition to obesity, including diabetes, heart disease and cancers.
