Sheriff Zwicke, female deputies newest participants in No Shave November fundraising efforts
Upgraded dash cams, body cameras now among the newest tools in fighting crime are dispatched across the city. "Not only do we have a video from our car point of view but now, we have an actual officer point of view so you actually get that interaction up close and personal and you see all the movements or gestures or any kind of interaction that the officer and the person kind of partake in. It's just an overall view that way we can have clear transparency with what's going on and that way we can just see exactly how officers responded," said Suarez. Suarez says the camera system will not only enhance police operations but he believes it will help maintain the safety of both police officers and civilians.
(Seguin) -- There are now more watchful eyes whenever a Seguin Police Officer engages with the public. The Seguin PD has officially rolled out its newest fleet of 10 Tahoe's each having the latest in state-ofthe-art video equipment. This latest batch of patrol units comes equipped with WatchGuard dash cameras -- cameras that are said to also work seamlessly with new WatchGuard body-worn cameras. Assistant Police Chief Rusty Suarez says the upgraded video equipment is the latest effort by the Seguin PD to increase its transparency when officers

"It's amazing when someone finds out that they are actually being recorded because we are used to people pulling out their phones and saying 'hey, we are recording' and that's totally fine. If you feel it's necessary, you need to do what you have to do. However, when they see that we are recording them as well, it changes their tone and behavior and now we are on somewhat the equal playing field so they'll be more upfront and honest as well as far as interaction. It's definitely a safety thing as well," said Suarez. Suarez says the WatchGuard cameras also allow for more intake of each police interaction whether it be at a crime scene or routine traffic stop. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- If you've ever wanted to see Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke with a beard, then your moment is soon to come. Sheriff Zwicke is the latest participant and most surprising twist in this year's No Shave November fundraiser at the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office. For the last several years, deputies and those in the Guadalupe County Jail have forked over a monthly donation to the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation Cancer Assistance Fund for the opportunity to sport a mustache or beard during the months of October and November.
Cpl. Laura Kohls, of the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office, shows off her pink nail polish while Sgt. Donnie White sports his new fall look with his beard – all part of this year’s No Shave November fundraising effort. The pink nail polish is the newest addition to the program giving female employees at the sheriff’s office the opportunity to also donate to a good cause.
It's been clear since the very beginning that Zwicke wasn't necessarily a fan of his deputies sporting a beard while in uniform. But over the years and especially after last year's contribution of $5,200 to the foundation, Zwicke says he just knew it was time for him to also put the razor down. Plus, he felt that a new hairy look could also come in handy during his own support of local nursing home residents each December. See BEARD, page 2

"I'm going to grow a full beard. I guess it happened because the award I was given last year when Eddie Miller had that plaque made thanking me for not growing a beard. I took that as a friendly challenge so we are going to give it a try and then if I'm successful at growing this beard then I will use this beard when we do the Sheriff Santa Program at the rest home instead of the fake beard," said Zwicke. As for his future new look, Zwicke says people have already begun taking notice of his new hairy threads.
Suarez says in the end, it's all about transparency, the ability to document evidence for criminal prosecution and the safety of everyone that is involved. "So, while we are in uniform, we are not allowed to have any bright colors. Everything we wear, make-up and nails has to be conservative. It has to be like light colors or no nail polish at all so it's something special for us to wear pink because it's not allowed per policy. This is something different for us," said Kohls. White says he really appreciates how the fundraising effort is growing with the addition of the pink nails and is proud that his colleagues are all coming together to help others. "I'm behind it 100 percent. I don't know why I didn't think about it sooner but I think it's a good idea," said White. Those growing mustaches pay $25 a month while beards are $50 per month. The cost to wear pink nail polish is also $25 a month. Last year, the fundraiser was extended into the month of December. All those contributing in December will have their funds go to support the annual Santa Sheriff Program which again helps to deliver Christmas gifts to every nursing home resident in Guadalupe County. The program will culminate with an awards ceremony naming both the ugliest and best mustaches, goatees and beards in the competition. Those wishing to support a specific deputy or who would like to support the campaign directly are asked to contact the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office at 830-379-1224.

Matadors crush Rebels 50-7 in third straight district win (Austin) - Jhalen Mickles accounted for 301 yards of total offense and four touchdowns Thursday night to help Seguin log its third consecutive lopsided win in District 12-5ADivision I and climb to .500 on the season (3-3) with a 50-7 rout of AustinTravis at Burger Stadium. The Matadors used a pair of Marques Washington touchdown runs, the first set up by a Micah Rodriguez interception, along with a one-yard quarterback sneak by Mickles, a seven-yard touchdown pass from Mickles to tight end Jonathan Patterson, and a pair of two-point conversion runs by Washington to build a 30-0 lead by the 6:24 mark of the second quarter. Seguin was inches from extending that cushion after moving the ball to the Travis one-yard line following a John Michael Mata fumble recovery, but the Rebels' Darian McFerrin stripped the ball loose near the goal line, broke through a wall of bodies, and sprinted 99 yards the other way to
make it 30-7 with 2:04 left in the half. The Matadors responded with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Mickles to Clark Ullrich to cap a six-play, 68-yard drive, and Washington's third twopoint conversion scamper gave Seguin a 38-7 halftime lead. "That's a huge momentum play to drive all the way down, get a foot away, fumble, they return it 100 yards, and you've got to right back out on the field" Seguin head coach Travis Bush said. "So hats off to the guys for coming out, and we talked about driving it down, and we did right before the half, and Clark Ullrich came up with a big play there to get in the end zone." Seguin took the opening drive of the third quarter 75 yards in 13 plays, and punctuated it with a 10yard touchdown on an option keeper by Mickles to go in front 44-7. Mickles kneeled down on the conversion try, as instructed by the coaching staff.
Sophomore running-back Jeravin Contreras concluded the scoring with a three-yard rushing touchdown to finish a 43-yard drive by the second-string offense early in the fourth quarter. Mickles enjoyed the most accurate passing performance of his varsity career, completing 21 of 24 attempts (87.5 percent) for 260 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 41 yards and two scores on nine carries. Washington churned out 118 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, and Contreras finished with 49 yards and a score on 10 attempts. Micah Rodriguez completed both of his passes for 25 yards with the second-string offense. Trevor Waz led the receivers in catches with seven for 77 yards, while Tristan Moreno produced a team-high 80 receiving yards on four grabs. Ullrich finished with five catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. Patterson pulled in two catches for
15 yards and a score. Washington totaled 20 receiving yards on three catches, and Alex Concepcion snared a 24yard reception. The Matadors piled up 507 total yards, went 9-14 on third down, and converted all four of their fourth down attempts. "We knew we'd have to earn everything tonight," Bush said. "You could tell Travis was a much improved team. They didn't give us anything. Guys had to earn it. We had to churn some yards out, and make some third down conversions. Some plays broke down, you saw Jhalen get on the move and find some open receivers, so hats off to them for making things happen when things broke down, continue those drives, and allow us to get a big lead in the first half." The Matador defense held the Rebels to 29 total yards and just six rushing yards on 15 carries, collected two turnovers, allowed just one first down and no third-down conversions in
seven attempts, and forced six punts. Sophomore linebacker Allen Martinez registered a team-high nine tackles. Ian Box and Chance Brewster each recorded three tackles-for-loss, and Brewster came up with two sacks. The Seguin defense has only allowed one offensive touchdown in three district games. "We just congratulated them," Bush said. "It's 10 straight quarters now without allowing a team in the end zone. I gave up seven points tonight. I called a bad play that resulted in the fumble. I told them I took the blame on that. But ultimately, they kept them out of the end zone, so in our house, they earned the shutout again this week." Seguin (3-3, 3-0) chases its fourth straight district win this Friday when AustinMcCallum visits Matador Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.
Panthers swat Yellow Jackets 55-14 in district opener (Geronimo) - A game that appeared to have all the makings of a close battle on paper ended up a blowout on the artificial turf of Erwin-Lee Field Friday night as Navarro blasted Llano 55-14 in the District 13-4ADivision II opener for both teams. Euler Deleon ran for 157 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries to lead a rushing attack that piled up 395 yards. Jean "MoMo" Sims and Brody Whitson each produced 74 yards and a touchdown, Sims on eight carries, Whitson on four. Matthew Gilliam scored once on the ground as well. Nick Billings tossed a 43-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Dietert, who also contributed to the rushing attack with 47 yards on three carries. Johnny Alegria made his healthy return to the lineup and saw limited action offensively with eight carries for 15 yards while aiding the defensive cause with an interception. Navarro led 35-0 at halftime and 42-0 in the third quarter before Llano finally broke up the shutout. The Panthers out-gained the Yellow Jackets 454 total yards to 197 and held Llano to 2-11 on third down. Ethan Thomas paced the defense with six total tackels and four tackles for loss. Kaid Qassom added five tackles, and Brian Holmes recorded a sack. Navarro, ranked as high as No. 7 in the various 4A Division II state polls, remaings undefeated at 6-0. The Panthers look to go 2-0 in district this Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff against Eastside Memorial at Austin ISD's Nelson Field.

Marion streak ends in road loss to Jourdanton
(Jourdanton) - Jourdanton pulled away in the second half Friday night to hand Marion its first District 15-3A-Division I loss and halt the Bulldogs' three-game winning streak in a 35-14 final at Indian Stadium. The Marion defense kept it close for a half. Jourdanton engineered an 11-play, 99-yard drive and capped it with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Cole Andrus to Jarel Lilly in the second quarter, but that was the only damage done on the scoreboard as the Indians took a 7-0 lead into halftime. Jourdanton used touchdown runs by Nick Cordova, Andrus, and Aidan Borth in the third quarter to put Marion in a 28-0 hole heading into the fourth. Borth's second score of the night stretched the margin to 35-0 with 4:51 left in the game. The Bulldogs broke up the shutout with 2:57 to play when Zach Goodwin delivered a deep pass to Jacob Devora for a 32-yard touchdown at the end of a five-play, 65-yard drive. Marion's Ray Rayos recovered a perfectly executed, slow rolling onside kick by Juan Ortiz at midfield just seconds after the first touchdown.
Goodwin rifled a 45-yard completion to Jayden Williams on the first snap and darted in for the fiveyard rushing touchdown a play later to generate the final margin. Marion head coach Ryne Miller applauded the effort of defensive coordinator Tim Tesch's unit

against a Jourdanton team tha came in averaging 52.8 points and 529 total yards per game, but noted that the Indians' depth ultimately got the best of the Bulldogs.
"I think the big thing is, we've got a lot of guys who play both ways, and they don't," Miller said. "They've got tons of numbers. You start wearing on teams, and that's the difference when you've got 4A, 5A numbers on a team, and your'e a 3A football team. I'm not trying to make excuses, but it wears on you. But our defense played great throughout the whole game. I thought they did a lot of things, and we had a great plan in place." Goodwin finished with 151 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception to go with 61 rushing yards and a score. Rayos ran for 51 yards on 14 carries. Devora led the receivers with 85 yards on three catches, and Williams contributed five receptions for 74 hards. Free safety Hutch Rabenaldt intercepted an Andrus pass, becoming just the second player to do so through six games in Jourdanton's season. The loss drops Marion to 4-3 overall, 2-1 in district play. Jourdanton remains undeated at 6-0, 1-0. The Bulldogs look to get back on track this Friday when Karnes City visits Veterans Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The open date in the schedule follows, and Marion continues its push for the highest possible playoff seed after that with a visit to Cotulla and a home date with Lytle. "We talk about finishing all the time, and these guys did a great job finishing," Miller said. "They never have any quit in them. There's never an effort problem, and that's why it's so fun to coach these guys, because they're always going to give their best, 100 percent, and they're going to finish these last three games off."

CDC Announces Update To Vaping Cases (Atlanta, GA) -- The number of vaping-related deaths and illnesses continues to rise. The CDC says that as of October 8th, more than two dozen deaths have been confirmed in 21 states. Nearly 13-hundred lung injury cases associated with vaping have been reported in almost every state, as well as Washington, D.C. and one U.S. territory. The CDC says about 70 percent of the patients are male and 80 percent are under the age of 35.
EPA Announces New Rules For Lead In Water (Washington, DC) -- A new crackdown on lead in water will make it safer to drink. The Environmental Protection Agency is changing the rules for the first time in more than 20 years. Communities must now identify which water lines have lead and replace them. Then customers must be notified within 24 hours if the level is too high. The EPA says while there is no safe level for lead, they're targeting the worst lines first. The ultimate goal is to replace all of them around the country. DeAngelo Williams Pays for 500 Mammograms to Honor His Late Mother (Undated) -- Former NFL star DeAngelo Williams is paying for hundreds of mammogram screenings
to honor his late mother, who died of breast cancer. The former Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers running back announced on social media that his non-profit "sponsored well over 500 mammograms and have no plans of stopping." Williams says this can be life-changing for women and his foundation is enabling them to get care that no one should ever be denied. The football player launched the foundation in 2014 after his 53-year-old mother Sandra succumbed to breast cancer several years after she was diagnosed.
NFL Releases Concussion PSA Comparing Dangers Of Youth Football To Smoking (New York, NY) -- The NFL is releasing a "Tackle Can Wait" video that tries to steer kids under the age of 14 into playing flag football, instead of tackle football. The public service announcement, produced by the Concussion Legacy Foundation, compares smoking to tackle football with a young teen saying, "The younger I start, the longer I'm exposed to danger." A video that accompanies the ad says that tackle football, which has been linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is "incredibly dangerous" to the developing brain.

John David Zunker John David Zunker was born on September 8, 1964 to John Bernard and Sylvia Lavern Zunker. He started most childhood days with his Big Daddy, eating molasses-covered pancakes prepared by his MeeMaw. He grew up in Seguin with his younger brother, Todd Alan Zunker, and was a spectacular center fielder, sprinter, golfer, safety, and barefoot kicker for the Matadors. John David graduated from Seguin High School in 1983 and went to Southwest Texas State, where he met his wife of 32 years, Cheryl Lynn Zvanja, just one month after he arrived. During his time at Southwest, he served as the Treasurer for the Kappa Alpha fraternity and obtained his bachelor’s degree in finance. John David and Cheryl married in 1987 and started their family in 1990 with the birth of their first son, Kyle Anthony Zunker. Four years later, in 1994, they celebrated the birth of their second son, Cory Austin Zunker. John David took pride in providing for his family and giving his sons every possible opportunity to succeed. As part of his mission for success, he and his family lived in Houston; DFW; Columbus, Ohio; Denver, Colorado; Augusta, Georgia; and Atlanta, Georgia. Everywhere he went, John David earned the respect and deep friendship of others who admired his work ethic and outstanding generosity. John David was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in late July of 2019. He spent the last months of his life fighting with tremendous courage, spending long weekends with his family, speaking words of encouragement to his sons, and praying to God. John David passed on October 8, 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia. John David is at rest with his Big Daddy and MeeMaw, Louis Nelson and Lilian O’Donnell Zunker; Grandpa and Grandma, Troy Donald and Edith Mabel Blankenship; and mother-in-law, Judy Gail Broughton.
