Navarro ISD earns an School bell rings for "A" from state of the Marion ISD Texas District officials springboard into the new year with a “B”
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
“A ”
(Geronimo) -- The Navarro ISD has lots to celebrate following its latest report card from the Texas Agency. The district earned an A as its letter grade for the 2019 accountability ratings. This was the first time that A-F accountability ratings were revealed for not only districts but also for each of its campuses. Navarro ISD Superintendent Dee Carter says the district is extremely happy to have earned such a high mark from the state of Texas.
"We are celebrating today. When we looked at the preliminary numbers awhile back, it looked as though we were possibly going to earn a 91 which is an A rating but we were kind of holding our breath until the commissioner made the official announcements yesterday. So now, we are very, very excited," said Carter. Carter says the A defines plenty of hard work and planning -- planning that has been an ongoing effort for the district.

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Marion) -- The Marion ISD today is not only kicking off a brand new school year but it's also applauding its efforts in landing a B during this year's state accountability ratings. The A-F accountability ratings were recently released to public school districts by the Texas Education Agency. Marion School Superintendent Kelly Lindholm says earning a B is a great way to open its doors today for the 2019-2020 school year. "We received a rating of a B which, of course, is

very solid and I think is an indication that our programs are indeed very solid and that we are on the right path as far as making sure that our students are successful. Our high school campus and middle school campus also received a rating of a B and our elementary campus did receive a rating of a C. It was a high C but it was still a C and so we have some work to do as far as making sure that those schools are improved and overall, we are pleased with the scores. As I said, I think it's an indication that things are very solid and we have our students, for the most part, having a lot of success," said Lindholm. See MARION Page 8

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

Richard Villegas, the plant operations manager at the Hexcel facility in Seguin, says community involvement is an important part of their culture at Hexcel. He says this donation is just another way for them to show how much they care about this community. "As a company here in Seguin, we have always tried to give back as much as we can to the community. This year, we've had some funds that we've asked for and that we were allotted to and what we try to do is figure out what's the best place and how we can give back and put back in the community. One thing that we've looked at is through the clinic. So what we've been able to accomplish is to donate some funds towards the Seguin Clinic and that's what we are doing here today," said Villegas.

"The Seguin facility has been here which we discussed today -- it's been for 65 years which is a long time of being here in the community. Over year over year, we are always trying

Seguin gains valuable experience in scrimmage vs. Hays (Seguin) - Seguin head football coach Travis Bush had a plan in place when he chose an off-season schedule common among smaller schools, but less so for 5A and 6A programs, by foregoing spring practice and opting for an extra week of August workouts and the additional scrimmage that comes with it.
Backup quarterback Micah Rodriguez tossed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Jervin Contreras for the second offense.
The Matadors produced mixed results in the first of those scrimmages Friday night.
The Seguin defense had its ups and downs.
Junior running-back Marques Washington ran for two touchdowns - the first in the controlled portion and the second in the timed 12-minute period.
On the plus side, the Matadors collected four turnovers, including three fumble recoveries and a Rodriguez interception.
Seguin scored five touchdowns and allowed six against 6A playoff program Buda-Hays (led by by former Navarro head coach Les Goad) over the course of the controlled and timed segments at Matador Stadium. "Looking back from last year, the slow start, starting 0-2, I thought we needed some scrimmages to get us prepared, and Hays and Cuero will do that," Bush said. "They (Hays) were big and physical. What they do offensively and defensively is physical by nature. It was good. We saw some guys compete. It was pretty even matched. Went back and forth. But we got exposed on some things, and we've got to get in better condition. We got tired and got several penalties, and plays called back. Positives were the defense got the ball and got some turnovers, and we got a lot to learn from."
On the "learning experience" side, Seguin allowed touchdown passes of 70 and 15 yards to Hays' run-dominant Slot-T offense during the timed period toward the end of the night. "Our motto is get the ball," Bush said. "We've got to create turnovers. We're going to be undersized and young against everyone we play, so we've got to make things happen. To see them come out with that mentality and get four turnovers, we see the excitement and starting to buy in and find a way to get that football." Junior running-back Marques Washington fights for some tough yards during Friday's scrimmage against Buda-Hays at Matador Stadium. Dillon Gutierrez sprinted away from the Hays found the end zone on a three-yard run during secondary for a 60 yard touchdown after catch- a productive first possession in the controlled ing a pass from Jhalen Mickles, and Mickles portion.
Seguin hits the road for its final pre-season scrimmage against defending 4A Division II state champion Cuero this Thursday at 6:30 p.m. See MORE SPORTS, Page 5

Guadalupe Clinic receives donation from Hexcel DONATION continued from Page 2 Wright says the clinic provides care to patients, who otherwise might not be able to see a doctor. "We have a lot of patients. Our patients, most of them, are underserved or uninsured and we want them to become more aware of their disease process so these donations really help us to perhaps get blood pressure machines so they can monitor their blood pressures, or Accu- Chek machines to check their blood sugars so they can really understand their disease process and be able to control it better," said Wright. Wright says they see qualified patients at the clinic, which is located on the backside of the GRMC campus. She says most of these patients suffer from chronic conditions and it's important that they receive regular care, so that they can live a longer and healthier life. "At the clinic, we are able to recognize some of their diseases early so we are able to do physical examinations and identify perhaps a new condition early and get them the medications through our prescription assistance program and help them take care of their illnesses early on," said Wright. Hexcel made a fairly large donation to the non-profit clinic, which was once known as the
Christian Free Clinic. Giving to the clinic isn't just something that corporations can do. Elaine Bennett, CEO of Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation, says individuals, families, churches, organizations, and businesses of all sizes can also make a donation. She says every little bit helps the clinic provide quality care for people in need. "With this donation, I hope it generates awareness that anybody can give to the foundation and whether the clinic is a passion of yours or whether it be other programs that are offered here at the hospital. This is your community hospital and any donation, of any amount, is greatly appreciated and it goes to great use," said Bennett. Many of the people who utilize the services of the clinic are working men and women, who just can't afford to see a doctor. The clinic helps to remove that barrier to quality medical care. GRMC also offers a Prescription Assistance Program (PAP) that can provide help to people who can't afford the medications that they need. It's a way for the hospital to provide a hand up to these people, and live up to its mission to provide exceptional care for all of its patients. If you would like to make a donation to the Guadalupe Clinic, tax-free donations can be given to the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation, and they can be earmarked for the clinic. Call (830) 401-1385 to give today, or send an email to foundation@grmedcenter.com.
School district celebrates Marion ISD shares student growth, A rating excitement on state rating from TEA
MARION continued from Page 1 Lindholm says the district is especially pleased with its high school and the efforts that have gone into that campus.
science, social studies and postsecondary readiness. Marion High School also earned four distinctions in math, science, comparative academic growth and postsecondary readiness.
"Our high school, of course, was kind of a high point as far as in receiving that A in student achievement because, of course at that level, we are preparing the students to go out into the world. So we like to see the post secondary readiness indicator which was a distinction I believe both at the middle school and at the high school so that is an area that we were pleased to see," said Lindholm.
Focusing in on another successful year, Lindholm says she's excited about welcoming students today and reminds parents and the community about all the great things that will be happening. In particular, she wants to remind the community about all the new voter approved construction that will soon be in the works.
Lindholm says while they celebrate, the district also clearly understands that these state ratings do not define the significance of each student. "We also always try to remember that our kiddos are not numbers and quite frankly, they are much more than a test score on a single day out of an entire school year so we try to make a balance of understanding how important these scores are and the fact that they are a reflection of who we are but also they are not the sole contributor to who Marion ISD or any other school district for that matter -- what they are or who they are as an ISD or as a campus. So, we, of course, are always striving to be our best. We certainly would love to achieve an A versus a B because we are always looking to get better but overall, we are basically pleased with our scores," said Lindholm. Distinctions earned by Marion Middle School were in
"I guess I would call it a challenge for this year -- it's a good challenge. It's the fact that we will are going to be starting construction on two of our campuses and so during the course of this year, probably the biggest message I have for parents is to be patient and understanding because as we start the processes, it is going to call for some changes as far as things like drop off and pick up lines. It's a temporary inconvenience for a long term gain but we know that sometimes during the course of this year, we are going to have to put that information to our parents and make them aware of some of the physical changes that are going to be going on on our campuses because of the increased growth and knowing that we are going to be starting these construction projects to get new classrooms in place as soon as possible because we are indeed growing and our numbers are increasing," said Lindholm. The bell schedule for Marion Elementary runs from 7:40 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. and from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for both Marion middle school and high school.
NAVARRO continued from Page 1 "In terms of our district as a whole, we earned the 91 scaled score which is an A rating and we did well in terms of STAAR performance and college career and military readiness. Our graduation rate is one of the highest. The 99.3 component score in that area. Our academic growth is not as high as we would like to see it so we know we still have work to do in that area and we still have some work to do in terms of closing the gaps among the different demographics groups in our school district. But overall, our kids are doing well," said Carter. Now although, the district was a bit weary of the rating system, Carter says it provides a clear path to not only their success but the challenges that still need to be tackled within the district. "The ratings were something we were not very excited about initially because what the state has done is to take indicators that are really a compilation of hundreds of factors in terms of student achievement relative largely to the STAAR and end of course test. There are other factors included but then that's
all boiled down into one letter grade and we had a lot of reservations about that but the way it's being reported to us now, it really shows us very specifically what are the areas that we are doing pretty well and what areas we still need to work on," said Carter. When broken down by campuses, the Navarro Elementary School also received an A with Distinction Designations in Math and Closing the Gaps. The Navarro Intermediate School earned a B. Navarro Junior High School earned an A with Distinction Designations in Academic Growth, Post Secondary Readiness and Closing the Gaps. Navarro ISD also earned an A with Distinction Designations in ELA/Reading, Mathematics and Closing the Gaps. According to the TEA, the Distinction Designations are "awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics. The distinction designation indicators are typically separate from those used to assign accountability ratings."

FCC Proposes Using 9-8-8 As National Suicide Prevention Line
NY Nonprofit Working On High Cost Of Cancer Treatments In U.S.
(Washington, DC) -- The Federal Communications Commission is proposing creating a three-digit phone number that would connect to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. FCC divisions submitted a joint report to Congress suggesting 9-8-8 as the number to reach the suicide and mental health hotline. Before the FCC can vote on the proposal, it must go through a public review period.
(New York, NY) -- A New York non-profit is trying to do something about the high cost of cancer treatments. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society says few people can afford the price tag of certain drugs, even with insurance. For instance, the cost of treating one particular type of leukemia costs 120-thousand-dollars a month. Leukemia Society officials are urging more price competition among drug companies and more transparency.
Dirty Bathrooms Mean Negative Feeling Toward School (Undated) -- Unclean restrooms cause students to have a negative perception of their school and its leaders. According to the Healthy Hand Washing Survey from Bradley Corp., 68-percent of students say school restrooms that are poorly maintained show that the school doesn't care about them. Students themselves also seem to need some reminders about cleanliness and hygiene with only 60-percent saying they always wash their hands before leaving the restroom. Their reasons include no soap or paper towels, not enough time between classes and that the sinks weren't working or were dirty.
Tuberculosis Treatment Has 90-Percent Success Rate (Washington, DC) -- The FDA has approved a new treatment for multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. TB has surpassed AIDS as the world's leading infectious cause of death and this new three-drug combination shows the greatest promise of a cure. The XDR-strain of tuberculosis has been resistant to previous treatments and is often deadly. In a small clinical sampling, nearly 90-percent of patients with this strain who were treated with the new regimen were cured within six months.
