Educator, speaker takes advice from Ellen DeGeneres, shares message with Seguin ISD Memory of Jack Lee honored at this year's Seguin ISD Opening Convocation By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Almost three months ago, he was on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. This week, Ricky Ramirez, an El Paso classroom teacher, was in the Seguin ISD inspiring all teachers and employees to embrace his message of "Reach Before You Teach." Bringing his "Real Talk" presentation to school districts like the Seguin ISD was actually inspired by Ellen, who after appearing on a segment of her show, was encouraged to take his message about developing real life relationships with students to all those who wanted to bring change to their classrooms. Ramirez, who shared his personal story with Seguin ISD employees during this year's annual convocation at Seguin High School, says

here he was the 2018 Teacher of the Year for his district and then a college prep program he worked for, AVID, was cut out of the school budget -- leaving him with no job. Inspired by what had happened, Ellen invited Ramirez onto the TV show giving him a chance at winning some money during the show's Million Dollar Day Holey Roller game. Although his appearance on her show landed him a $100,000 cash prize, he says it his experience in teaching that has and will always remain priceless. "The message is that relationships matter and yes, it is important to know what we teach but it's important to know who we teach and our teachers are on a mission to

get to know the human being not just the students. We are here to know the human being and and that was our message was reach the kids before you teach them and when we build those relationships and when we build the kids up and we motivate them and inspire them, that's when learning outcomes improve. That's when test scores raise. That's when deeper learning occurs. That's when everyone wins when that happens and I can tell that #TeamSeguin is all on board with that," said Ramirez. Although he recalls homework assignments and other classroom instruction, it's filling in for their dad at a quincenera or attending a student's band concert that have allowed him to really connect with students -- positively impacting their future. MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

Ramirez, who had to overcome his own adversities while going to school, said his source of hope and strength came from the teachers who gave of themselves each and every day. He says his presentation was not only about sharing the importance of making kids a priority but also about validating for other teachers that what they are already doing is indeed the right thing. "I've been told all the time, you don't get paid to do that or what, you are using your own money to buy these? Yes, it's a calling. It's not a job and when it's a calling, you do whatever you can for your calling. You do whatever you can for your kids. We are in America. We are so blessed. We are so blessed that we can afford to go spend $20 on school supplies for students who don't have it -- knowing that hey, we are going to get paid next week. We are so blessed and what better way to live than to be a blessing to others," said Ramirez. Ramirez's visit comes just a day after the Seguin ISD lost one of its long time and most beloved educators. Retired Seguin High School Teacher Jack Lee, who taught for over 40 years in the Seguin ISD, died Sunday. Ramirez says in preparing to speak to Seguin ISD employees, he couldn't but help notice the memories and words of gratitude for Lee that have

Jack Lee since flooded social media pages. He says Lee's imprint in student lives is exactly what his message is all about. "For me personally, it made me reflect on how do I want to be remembered? I think if we all lived that way, everyday, thinking how do I want to be remembered if today were my time to go? How do you want to be remembered? Do you want to be remembered for someone who spread love, positivity and joy and who built people up? We all have problems. We all have things we face at home but we are 100 percent in control in how we treat people. We have 100 percent control of that so spread love, spread joy, be kind because you might just be saving someone's life and when you exert positivity, naturally you've

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez says Ramirez's presentation Monday was no doubt the springboard for teachers to lead like their former colleague Jack Lee. Gutierrez says relationships are the foundation. If you have relationships with all of your students, then he says you can make some amazing things happen. "A reminder of that is Mr. Lee's legacy that he leaves behind. He is truly the model of what relationships look like and what people are talking about is those fond memories of him going above and beyond, showing that he cared, doing things outside of the school day for kids and their families. People aren't talking about a certain standard that he taught. They are talking about the relationships that he made and because of the relationships that Mr. Lee had, he was able to get kids to perform and that's what kids remember about Mr. Lee and so, it's my hope that discussing Mr. Lee's legacy, hearing Mr. Ramirez speak that we can leave here and remember that we are champions for our kids and by being a champion, the possibilities are endless," said Gutierrez. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Today's the day that kids will get to take a sneak peak into their classrooms. Seguin ISD elementary school children and their families are invited to today's Meet the Teacher. District officials say they encourage students to bring their school supplies and visit their classrooms in preparation for the first day of school. District officials say they hope today will help ease any back to school jitters for students. Meet the Teacher events were held Monday for all pre-k and all secondary school students. Seguin ISD ready to build relationships SISD continued from Page 2 The spirit of building relationships with all children was the theme of this year's 20192020 Seguin ISD Convocation. In honor of Lee, this year's Matador Spirit Stick -- given to the campus with the most energy at the

convocation-- was presented as the Jack Lee Spirit Stick. The wining campus to walk away with this year's award was Patlan Elementary School which showcase its excitement for the new school year by featuring a Matador and bull performance. Following the

Weekly Alcohol Consumption Can Shorten Life

Air Pollution As Bad A Smoking

(Undated) -- A new study says drinking several glasses of alcohol a week can shorten your lifespan. The research published in The Lancet medical journal shows that people who drink are more likely to have a stroke, heart failure or succumb to an aneurysm. Drinking 100 grams of alcohol, which is about five glasses of wine or pints of beer, a week can increase the chance of premature death. Drinking 10-18 glasses of wine a week can take off one-to-two years from someone's life.

(Chicago, IL) -- Breathing polluted air is potentially as bad for you as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. A new study out this week looked at the long-term effects of air pollution on the lungs in cities across the United States. While a lot of communities have seen decreases in air pollution, ozone has been on the rise. People exposed to just three parts per billion over a decade had the same risk of emphysema as a 30-year pack-a-day smoker. The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

NYPD Union Boss Makes Plea To Officers

Vaccine Developed For Cat Allergies

(New York, NY) -- After New York City's 9th police suicide this year, a union boss is making a desperate plea to police officers. In a video posted online, PBA President Patrick Lynch tells New York's finest that if they are on the edge and contemplating suicide, don't do it. Lynch's video comes after two cops killed themselves a day apart. The NYPD is again telling officers to ask for help if they need it and are adding more mental health providers to police insurance plans.

(Zurich) -- A Swiss company says they've found a vaccine for cat allergies. Here's the catch: the vaccine is for the cat, not the human. Scientists with HypoPet AG say the vaccine works by immunizing the cat against their own allergen. It neutralizes the allergen, which is found in cat dander. It doesn't appear to have any serious side-effects for cats and the company hopes to have it on the market by 2022. Their research is published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
