Meadow Lake Nolte Dam Association to host first meeting this weekend By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- The newest group to mobilize toward the preservation of area lakes is the new MLNDA, Meadow Lake Nolte Dam Association. The group will be hosting its first organizational meeting this weekend and is inviting those who have a vested interest in preserving Nolte Dam to attend the meeting scheduled at the Seguin Public Library. Miriam Jones, vice president of the newly organized group, says MLNDA was formed in response to the crisis of potentially losing the lake next month. She says the 501c3 non-profit organization includes a board of directors and a steering committee which will be presenting the group's research and ideas on how to save the lakes. She says those findings will be officially revealed during Saturday's meeting. "We would like to present our international research and our study to our association. We have some very strong research and knowledge based on relationships with other lake associations and I believe that that is information we plan to share on Saturday in our meeting and kind of get some feedback from our homeowners. We are going to kick that off with just specific information that we gathered. We are really looking to our lake association new members to come to the meeting with their ideas as well," said Jones. "We are hoping to gain a lot of members. We will have all of our membership information there available as well. We will also be presenting our research, our ideas, our budget on how we can long term and short term handle this problem." Jones says all the work that has gone into organizing this new group have been well worth the effort. See MLNDA, page 3

Davila puts pit master skills to the test during Food Network's BBQ Beatdown Davila to host viewing party this Sunday By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- If you're going to have a BBQ Beatdown in Texas, then some of your best if not the best contestants will no doubt be from Seguin. Seguin's very own rising-star pit master Adrian Davila, of Davila's BBQ, will again be featured this Sunday on the Food Network. This time, Davila will appear on the TV channel's new pilot episode of "BBQ Beatdown." Davila will be going head to head with three celebrity chefs who will be firing up their grills for the special Labor Day showdown.

MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for favors. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favor). Take it dear Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it, then in your merciful eyes it will become your favor, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and favor will be granted. Never known to fail I.S.G.

aimed at a shot of glory rather than a burn of a beatdown. "The premise is wrapped around like three well established barbecue per say legends in our industry pitted against somebody (like) me -maybe not quite to their stature but definitely has some notches in their belt in the barbecue world but the particular thing with this show is that opposed to being on with other contestants than being eliminated, I'm the sole contestant and I face all three of the hosts. It's a lot different when you are going against such stiff competition back to back to back and I found that out by the end of the shoot," said Davila. See DAVILA, page 11

You can win a brand new 2019 GMC Terrain, loaded. I mean you've got power windows, locks, tilt, cruise, AM/FM -- you've got the OnStar. You've got it all for five bucks. It doesn't get better than that and last year, you guys did a great story on the winner. It's one of those things when you've got a ton on entrants that come out and they pay the $5 to join us but somebody that won it last year really, really -- let's just say it was a Godsend," said Davila.

Davila, however, warns that those needing a ticket are encouraged to get theirs as soon as possible. "And we say that we will be selling them there at the event but in the last three years, we've sold out. That Sunday, mid-way through the actual event, we are out of tickets. So, yes, you can get them ahead of time from one of our parishioners. You can call the church office at 830-379-4338 and they'll gladly get you some tickets. You can go by there, pick them up, sign-up and do all of that good stuff. But to say that we will sell them at the event, yes, we will sell them that Saturday and Sunday until we run out. The last few years, we've absolutely run out," said Davila. Events will kick off Saturday with a 4 p.m. mass inside the Seguin Coliseum. Immediately after the service, church leaders will go outside to bless the booths and begin the two night celebration.

Revamped Matadors make 2019 debut at Antonian Prep (San Antonio) - Travis Bush's fourth season as Seguin High School's head football coach begins with 13 first-time starters taking the field in Friday's season opener against Antonian Prep at Apache Stadium in San Antonio. The loss of a stellar senior class to graduation last spring hasn't lowered the bar of expectations for the Matadors, who come off a turnaround 7-4 season with a District 12-5A-Division I championship and a playoff appearance that ended more than a decade of futility and frustration for the program. Senior quarterback Jhalen Mickles headlines the list of veterans with significant game experience after producing 932 yards of total offense and eight total touchdowns as a backup and special package player at the position a year ago. Junior Marques Washington takes over at tailback after playing fullback as a sophomore. Dillion Gutierrez is the only returning starter among the receivers, though Dravan McKnight and tight end Jonathan Patterson saw plenty of playing time in 2018. The offensive line is Seguin's most experienced position group, anchored by returning starters and seniors Daniel Gonzalez, Tracy Wilson, and Josh Avalos. With a quick scan of his depth charts in preparation for the season opener, speed is the attribute that jumps off the page for Bush. "Both sides of the ball, I like our skill guys," Bush said. "You talk about Mickles, and Marques Washington. You've got Jonathan Patterson, Dravan McKnight, Trevor Waz - a lot of guys that are very talented, but not the game experience that we need right now. So I'm curious to see how they're going to react in ballgames. They played as backups last year, and the same thing on defense. A lot of guys that got some playing time, but haven't been in the spotlight yet, so really anxious to see how they pan out." Chance Brewster (84) steps into a senior leadership role for the Seguin defense heading into the 2019 season. Photo by Andie Rangel.

Navarro looks to start promising Mix of new faces and veterans usher Marion 2019 football season with road into football opener vs. Luling win over Gonzales (Luling) - Marion's quest to build on a 10-2 season that produced a District 15-3A-Division I championship and the program's (Gonzales) - Navarro opens Rod Blount's second season as head coach with a Friday road game against the Gonzales Apaches. The Panthers only return five offensive starters and three on defense, but the expectations remain sky-high for a program that went 10-3 and advanced to the fourth round of the 4A Division II playoffs in Blount's 2018 debut.

first playoff win since 2013 begins Friday when the Bulldogs open Ryne Miller's second year as head coach with a road game in Luling. With five starters back on each side of the ball and multiple positions up for grabs, Miller and the coaching staff tailored Marion's off-season to bring out the best in the program's up-and-coming players.

"Since we are a little younger team, we wanted to make sure we were strong, so we lived in the weight room this whole offseason," Miller said. "We did a lot of competitive things to make sure we knew how to compete. Then the last month or two, we spent a lot of time on the football field just teaching basic fundamentals. We wanted to make sure our guys were fundaNavarro's Slot-T rushing attack should keep churning out the tough yards, ex- mentally sound, and it was all about competition. We've got some athletic kids coming up in the program, and the 10 seniors plosive plays, and touchdown drives with the stellar backfield trio of Euler De- we have right now, they've done a great job of leading through the off-season, and making sure we're in the right spot to be Leon (1,242 yds., 19 TD in 2018), Johnny Alegria (1,374 yds, 17 TD), and successful this year." "Momo" Sims, albeit behind a rebuilt offensive line, and with the quarterback that emerges from the competition between Sam Muniga, Mark Wozniak, and Zach Goodwin, an All-District receiver as a junior, takes over at quarterback in the wake of All-State performer Tayler Mills' Nick Billings. graduation. That position switch and the loss of All-State receivers Jackson Allen and Jacob Wallace have opened the door for receivers like Hutch Rabenaldt, Dillon Blakely, and Jayden Williams to earn more snaps. Ray Rayos (702 yds. 6 TD in "We know our backfield has some experience, and are good tough runners," 2018) and Cade Baumann return to give the Bulldogs a prolific backfield, and senior Karson Kelso anchors the offensive Blount said. "We've just got to get the offensive line to gel, get a quarterback line. Williams, Baumann, and Samuel Montoya headline the defense, and Liam Christenson looks poised for a breakout comfortable back there and get them dealing the cards, carrying out our fakes year after moving from the defensive line to linebacker and shaving his 40-yard dash speed down to the 4.4 range in the offseason. The new-look Marion squad debuts against a once-proud Luling program that has fallen on hard times in recent well, and hopefully be able to hit a couple of passes down the field." years. The Eagles, coached by Stacey Martin, lost the 2018 opener to the Bulldogs 71-6 and stumbled to an 0-10 finish. Junior transfer Myles McCord looks to provide downfield speed at receiver after Luling hopes experience will fuel improvement in 2019 with eight offensive starters back and seven on defense. The Bulldogs leading Lifegate to a pair of six-man state championships in his first two seasons and Eagles kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Luling. A complete interview with Miller can be heard during the Bulldog Report of high school football. Defensive end Brett Butler (5 sacks in 2018), and line- between 6:30 and 7:00 on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. backers Gabriel Means (42 tackles) and Cole Mouser (55 tackles) headline a defense that looks to maintain Navarro's high standard on that side of the ball.

Falcons meets High Island in Stout's head coaching debut

The Panthers face a Gonzales team with a new head coach in Michael Waldie. The Apaches only return three starters on each side of the ball from the 2018 (Houston) - The Lifegate Christian School football program opens John Stout's first season as head coach and its TCAL Sixgroup that finished 6-6 and advanced to the second round of the 4A Division I Man state title defense Saturday against UIL Class-1A opponent High Island at Emery/ Weiner School in Houston. John Rabon, the Falcons' long-time head coach and architect of the program's winning tradition, has helped eased Stout's transition playoffs after dropping the season opener to Navarro 55-35. by serving as an assistant on the staff, as has Rabon's 2018 replacement Kenny Coffman. The other notable change for Lifegate's 2019 squad is the absence of Myles McCord. TCAL's most dominant six-man player as a spreadback in 2018 will spend his Blount and his staff should be able to gague the revamped offensive line's pro- junior season catching passes and roaming the secondary in UIL 11-man football as a Navarro Panther. The Falcons still return gress against an athletic Gonzales defense led by All-State defensive end Lion a number of veteran contributors with championship wins and big game experience under their belts, including Barson Schmidt, Williamson. Blake Pruitt, David Brewer, Joseph Menchaca, Luke Landin, Quentin Shellnut, and Zachary McCulloch. "Those guys do a really good job coming off the football, and we've got to take care of them up front," the coach said. "The secondary, like always with Gonzales, is extremely athletic. They can run, jump, and do a lot of great things back there. We've got to stay on our blocks and get movement up front, and take care of those guys in the secondary.

"This team is going to be well rounded, where we don't just have one person who sticks out," Stout said. "Before, we've had one person that everybody was keying on. Now they're going to have to worry about three or four or more kids. We're going to work them in and put them in different positions, and get them where they can make a play."

Lifegate meets a High Island squad with virtually everybody back from the 2018 team that went 4-7 and made the UIL 1A playoffs in Region III. The most notable name on coach Matt Miracle's Cardinals roster is running-back Nate Jackson, who Friday's kickoff in Gonzales is set for 7:30 p.m. A complete interivew with rushed for over 1,200 yards and 22 touchdowns a year ago. Saturday's kickoff at Emery/ Weiner School in Houston is slated Blount can be heard during the Panther Report at 6:30 on KWED 1580-AM and for 7 p.m. A complete interview with Stout can be heard during the Falcon Report on Friday between 6:45 and 7:00 on KWED Seguintoday.com. 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com.

Matador game to air on KWED MATADORS continued from page 4 Seguin's first test comes against an Antonian Prep program that left Matador Stadium with a 25-22 win in the 2018 opener. Veteran coach Van Fuschak's Apaches boast a stout defense with 10 returning starters, including Colorado commit Devin Grant as rushing off the end. Grant was a regular intruder in Seguin's backfield during last season's matchup. "He took over the game on their defense, and caused some negative plays and turnovers on our end, so it's going to be establishing the line of scrimmage, managing them, and doing a good job of moving the ball around and finding

some soft spots in the defense, but we've got to be patient and take what they give us, and again, we can't have the negative plays, and we can't have the penalties that got us behind the chains last year," Bush noted. "We've got to keep the ball moving forward." Senior quarterback Khalil Warfield triggers the Antonian offense and figures to challenge the Matador defense after throwing for 1,670 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2018. Friday's kickoff at Antonian's Apache Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM with Mike McBride handling play-by-play and Ivy Meehan providing color analysis. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 with the Navarro, Marion, and Lifegate coaches shows.

Three barbecue legends to take on Davila in TV competition DAVILA continued from page 2 As for the menu, Davila says his talents were indeed put to the test. "It's BBQ Beatdown so of course, the world of barbecue can involve many things. What I can say is the three things that will be featured -- Texas grapefruit and pecans which from Seguin, we can be very familiar with and smoked chicken pot pie which in 30 minutes -again, we are in the South -- there's not many people who haven't eaten a pot pie here in the Seguin area -- so again, try doing that in 30 minutes. Meanwhile, we did have a 16-hour smoke that we were doing simultaneously on a pork shoulder which was the last round and so those three items I can share will be featured," said Davila.

Courtesy photos

Davila, who is no stranger to being featured on national TV cooking shows whether it be as a contestant or judge, says it's always his effort to promote the city of Seguin while on these shows. After all, he says it is Seguin who has supported his locally family operated restaurant. To share in his debut on BBB Beatdown, Davila is inviting the community to join him at Davila's BBQ for a viewing party this Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. The one hour show will air at noon. Specials will include $1 mimosas, micheladas, and draft beer and $5 food specials including a smoked pulled pork Cuban sandwich and a smoked chicken pot pie.

NJ Health Officials Reveal First Human Case Of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (Trenton, NJ) -- Public health officials in New Jersey are warning about Eastern Equine Encephalitis, a mosquito-borne illness that's deadlier than West Nile Virus. New Jersey recorded its first human case this summer in an elderly Somerset County man who's undergoing rehab after being released from a hospital. Severe cases involve brain inflammation and begin with sudden headaches, high fevers, chills, vomiting. Human cases have also been found in four Massachusetts counties and in Delaware. Infected mosquitoes have turned up in seven southeast Connecticut towns but, so far, no human cases have been reported.

not just when they say they seek help for a problem.

Poll: Most Democrats Support Medicare For All Candidate (Arlington, VA) -- A majority of Democratic voters would support a 2020 primary candidate who wants Medicare for All rather than trying to improve Obamacare. According to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll, 65 percent of Democratic primary voters prefer a candidate who backs a singlepayer healthcare system. Just 13 percent said it would make them less likely to support a candidate. Support for Medicare for All is up from 57 percent in the same poll in January.

Immigration Services No Longer Considering Medical Deferment

Mental Health Expert On Epidemic Of NYC Police Suicides (New York, NY) -- With nine NYPD suicides this year, a mental health expert is weighing in on what some are calling an epidemic. Psychologist Roby Ludwig says New York City cops are dealing with more stress than ever because they're being vilified and can be taped and lose their jobs. She also says some of the suicides may be linked to a lack of support, financial stressors or undetected drug or alcohol addiction. She believes police officers should get regular mental health checkups,

(Washington, DC) -- The federal government is no longer considering deferring deportations for immigrants with serious medical conditions. Instead, ICE will consider deferments on a case-bycase basis. That's a change in a decades-old policy that let people stay in the U.S. for two-years if they needed extreme medical care. Immigration Services says it gets about one-thousand medical deferment requests each year, most of which are not approved.
