Seguin ISD takes a stand against hate By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Despite this world of uncertainty, the Seguin ISD continues to unfold its lessons in kindness while keeping the doors on hate closed. For the fourth year in a row, the school district is being recognized by being named a "No Place for Hate Campus" designation. Kirsten Legore, executive director of students services for the Seguin ISD, says campus level activities spearheaded by school counselors have again been honored by the Anti-Defamation League. Legore recently shared a letter received by the Anti-Defamation League to members of the Seguin ISD Board of Trustees. The statement reads, "This is not something all schools in Central Texas do and your district is setting an example to the community at large that you value safe and inclusive schools. In 2001, the ADL created the No Place For Hate Initiative in the Schools so that educators and students could have the necessary resources to make their schools a place where all students feel safe and welcome," said Legore. "We are so pleased that Seguin ISD made the commitment to be a No Place for Hate district again by signing the resolutions of respect and participating in three activities focused on building bridges of understanding and community, your schools have demonstrated that your district is a place that promotes respect for diversity and rejects prejudices and bullying." The campuses, led by the counselors, committed to creating a student led coalition, signing the Resolution of Respect, and hosting at least three anti-bias and diversity related activities throughout the year. Seguin ISD Superintendent makes personal investment in the future of education By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Seguin ISD's top administrator continues to get plenty of applause by not only ensuring the education of students but inspiring many of them to continue the work. In a recent social media post, Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez wrote "After being inspired during the first few days of school, it came to mind the many talents that we hold with our classrooms. As a result of this source of inspiration, I have decide to allocate a portion of my salary increase towards $2,000 in scholarships for graduating seniors who aspire to become a Seguin ISD educator." While the specifics behind that scholarship are still being ironed out, Dr. Gutierrez said he just knew it was what was in his heart after seeing the real work that was happening inside Seguin ISD classrooms. See SISD, page 7

Seguin ISD Superintendent Dr. Matthew Gutierrez shared this photo on his social media page a couple of days before agreeing to take part of his salary increase and designating it toward scholarships for those looking to go into teaching. He writes, “As I visited our campuses today, I was impressed to see seamless transitions and students actively engaged. I am one proud Superintendent! #TeamSeguin #MatadorFamily

Seguin ISD school bus involved in minor bus accident, no injuries reported (Seguin) -- Seguin Police officials are reporting no injuries following a morning vehicle accident involving a Seguin ISD school bus. They say the accident was reported just before 8 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of West Kingsbury Street and State Highway 46 North.

green. That's when they say the driver, Inez Brooks, 73, released her foot momentarily from the break causing the bus to roll forward tapping the back of a black 2009 Ford Taurus. The Taurus was being driven by Gwyneth Tallier, 18.

Before police arrived on scene, both drivers were able to safely pull over off the roadway by Texas Lutheran University. They say according to preliminary investigation, school bus #87, which was carrying six Pre-K students to Ball Early Childhood Learning Center, was traveling eastbound on West Kingsbury when the bus stopped at the intersection waiting for the traffic signal to turn

Officers say the impact was "extremely minor" and none of the students were injured. After the accident, the students were transported to the Ball campus on another bus. While on scene, Tallier, was examined by EMS but refused transportation. At this time, officers say no citations have been issued as the accident remains under investigation.

County awaits word from TCEQ before Bridging cultures through learning temporarily solving its trash problem

Meanwhile, the county has already advertised the job specifications to reopen the collection sites. Those operation options range from turn-key services to companies who simply just come in and haul off the trash. County officials say they hope to award a bid in mid-September.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is being forced to have to wait until it can implement an interim solution to help citizens get rid of their trash. County Judge Kyle Kutscher says the county is waiting on the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for a storm water permit. He says that's the only thing needed before the county can temporarily respond to the closure of its county wide waste collection sites. The commissioners court Tuesday considered the plan after the sites where closed down in late July. The sites were shut down after the county and the previous vendor, Republic Services, were unable to negotiate a contract to continue the operation. The proposed interim plan is to have the county employees staff the collection sites on Saturday only. Dumpsters would be placed out in the Kingsbury and Marion locations. But again, Kutscher says before the county can move forward, it has to wait for the TCEQ which can not give an approximate time for that permit.

Superintendent to invest in a student’s college education SISD continued from page 1

"I think about one, we want to encourage students to further their education whatever that may be -- vocational school, technical school, university -- but, what I've noticed is that we are seeing, the research is there, fewer students choosing to pursue education. The pool of candidates that we are looking at is not as strong as it used to be because there aren't as many people going into education for a variety of factors. The image that public schools have, some of the decisions that are being made by policy makers, there's a lot of factors that are discouraging people from going into education so one, I want to incentivize and encourage students to pursue education but I think some of the best teachers that we get in Seguin ISD are those that graduated from Seguin ISD and we in fact, hired a few alumni to come and give back to their community. That's another reason. I want to encourage people to come back and contribute to their community," said Gutierrez.

!"#$

!"#$%&' MATHEMATICIAN & FORMER NFL PLAYER

Gutierrez says he understands that all scholarships can never guarantee that students will come back home to their community nor can it ever guarantee them a job or a job opening. But what he does know is that it can serve as a spring board -- guiding even more students toward that profession. He says it also sets in stone Seguin ISD's commitment to growing more teachers. "Now, things change and I understand that. That someone may get married and that may take them to Ohio or Amarillo wherever it could be but I think the most important thing is to get kids to start thinking about coming back and contributing to their community and to purse education which I believe is a very rewarding career. So, that is what really motivated me, inspired me to do that and as I was going into classrooms the first few days of school and really seeing the magic that our teachers are doing in their classroom, that really inspired me to just do that at that time and announce it on social media and it's my hope that we have students who are interested in pursuing education and coming back to Seguin ISD one day and have some applicants for that scholarship in the spring," said Gutierrez. Gutierrez's announcement was reportedly embraced by several Seguin High School students whose passion thus far has been aimed toward teaching. The process for applying for the scholarships are expected to be laid out soon giving students the opportunity to be awarded the inaugural scholarships this spring.

Health and Medical Page Presented by:

Illinois Patient Dies In What's Considered First U.S. Vaping Death (Chicago, IL) -- An Illinois patient is dead after contracting a serious lung disease linked to vaping. The Chicago Health Department considers it the first death in the United States linked to vaping. We know the patient was an adult but no other information has been released including gender, name, age or date of death. The CDC now says 193 people in 22 states have contracted severe respiratroy illnesses after using an electronic cigarette or vaping device.

Warnings For Lung Disease Ahead Of Hurricane (Augusta, GA) -- People with chronic lung diseases such as emphysema, C-O-P-D or lung cancer need to make special preparations ahead of a hurricane. Dr. Rabih [[ robby ]] Bechara , who's with the University of Georgia Medical College in Augusta, says patients should have a travel pack ready.

That pack should include their medications, plus their prescriptions in case they're away for longer than they'd planned and need refills. Dr. Bechara also says floodwaters pose another post-hurricane risk for lung patients because they're likely to contain raw sewage, garbage and other toxins.

Study: Aspirin Should Not Be Recommended For Healthy People Over 70 (Paris, France) -- Medical researchers say recent clinical trials show that low-dose aspirin should not be recommended for healthy people over 70. The findings were presented Saturday at the ESC cardiovascular congress in Paris. They show that taking aspirin regularly increases the risk of major bleeding, with no real benefit, even for people at the highest risk of heart disease. One of the study leaders said more and more people reach the age of 70 with no overt cardiovascular disease. A report on the study is in the latest edition of Science News.
