Seguin Education Foundation announces new executive director Lutheran University, Torres not only has nonprofit organizational experience but also effective communication skills and creative innovation all of which are needed to help strengthen the fundraising efforts of the Seguin Education Foundation. Magin says Torres, no doubt, is a great fit to continue to build on the success of the organization and grow the educational opportunities for Seguin ISD.
Katie Edwards and Laura Torres By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- There is a new set of hands taking over the reigns of helping to raise money -money that is needed to purchase new and innovative teaching tools that otherwise can not be afforded through the regular school budget. The Seguin Education Foundation recently announced Laura Torres as its new executive director. SEF Board President Debbie Magin says as a graduate of Seguin High School and Texas
“We're very excited for Laura to further develop the mission of the Seguin Education Foundation. She is a proud product of Seguin ISD and we're pleased to have her return to the district to utilize her skills and give back to the community. We made the investment in Laura with the hopes that she is going to get a capital campaign kicked off. She's really great at social media. She's going to expand our social media presence, our website. We think she comes with a set of tools and familiarity with Seguin and Seguin schools that it is going to be a great fit," said Magin. Prior to accepting her role with the SEF, Torres has served in various positions, all of which are said to have prepared her for this newest endeavor. She has served as a volunteer recruitment coordinator for CASA of Central Texas and as the public relations director for Alligator Dental. See SEF, page 2

She has also helped launch other nonprofits through her work with the Cullinane Law Group in Austin. Torres says she has already begun the work launching various goals. She says they include raising awareness about the SEF and sharing exactly what the organization is all about. She says part of that responsibility is sharing more about each of the educational grants that are awarded and the innovative lessons that go on in Seguin ISD classrooms because of the money awarded. Another goal that goes hand in hand with raising awareness about the group is to increase its non-profit's presence on social media such as putting more interactive posts on social media and showing actual pictures of how the money is being used to increase learning. Perhaps her most important goal is with the community. Torres says establishing relationships with local businesses will be key to making sure that all efforts are a win-win for everyone. "One of my goals is to increase the partnerships between the local businesses and with Seguin ISD and specifically with the classrooms. I mean there is so many teachers that are doing incredible work and they are a part of this community and so I feel that it's really important for the different businesses and organizations to step up and assist those teachers who have these great visions and they care about the kids in the classrooms," said Torres. Now as the SEF welcomes Torres to the leadership position, it is also taking the opportunity to thank former Executive Director Katie Edwards for her role and efforts over the past decade. Magin says the success of the Seguin Education Foundation lies heavily on Edwards' leadership. She says through her guidance since 2009, the Seguin Education Foundation funded over half a million dollars in classroom grants, $50,000 in student scholarships and distributed almost $30,000 to new teachers to the district. "Under her leadership, our organization has grown tremendously. It would be a great loss if she was to walk away completely from the organization but luckily, she's going to

Since 2004, the Seguin Education Foundation has funded almost 300 classroom grants totaling approximately $650,000 including $39,000 given away at this year's Seguin ISD Convocation in August. The goals of the Seguin Education Foundation are to encourage all students to achieve academic excellence, support staff for innovative teaching, and to inspire community members to participate with the school district to enrich education. This year the SEF modified the grant application and was able to fund every eligible grant. Any budgeted funds not spent from year to year are added towards the goal of an Education Foundation endowment. Major fundraisers for the SEF include the Annual Denim & Diamonds event, Gold Rush - an employee giving campaign, and the Healthy Nut Run which will occur during PecanFest. As Magin mentioned, Torres will work with the board of directors to analyze each event and add a Community Capital Campaign with the goal of fully funding the Education Foundation Endowment. The group's annual Celebration of Excellence Banquet is also done in conjunction with the Seguin High School Student Council and recognizes the best of both the graduating class and Seguin ISD Staff. “We are continually inspired by the generosity of our Seguin ISD staff and community in support of our organization, especially when many of those individuals already give so much of their time and effort to improve the quality of education and instruction to our students,” said Magin. “We look forward to many more years in collaboration with Seguin ISD and the Seguin community”. Those wishing to make a donation or who would like more information about volunteering with the group are asked to visit www.seguineducationfoundation.org. Tickets still available for tonight's Back to School Dance for local kids and their parents "We made it a dad and daughter dance and mother and son dance so they can come out and spend time with their kids. So, I think a good night out is good for the kids. We are also going to crown a king and queen that night, best dancer that night, best dressed and we are going to have an area where they can bring their phones and take pictures with their kids that night. No alcohol will be sold on those nights. It is just strictly beverages and chips, hot dogs, nachos, all that good stuff for the kids," said Belmarez.

NEF prepares for annual homecoming tailgate dinner
By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- Parents are invited to grab their daughters and sons for a special night. A pair of businesses have teamed together to host the first ever Back to School Dance. The dance will be held tonight from 7 p.m. to midnight at JR Lounge. Over the summer, JR Lounge in conjunction with Guadalupe Productions, hosted a series of Teen Nights. The alcohol and drug free nights spent with friends proved very successful attracting dozens and dozens of area kids to the event. That success has now evolved into tonight's effort to offer something even more special -- this time including the parents. That's according to Andrew Belmarez, of Guadalupe Productions.

Belmarez says the name "Back to School" is also their way to celebrate the start of a brand new year and really zone in on what's truly important. "Like we did at Teen Nights, we would tell the kids 'this year, it's important you go back to school. It's important you listen to your teacher and it's important that you graduate. You are going to need it in the future," said Belmarez. Music tonight will be provided by local DJs Kumbia Champz and Millionaire in Da Mixx. The event is also being hosted by the Law Office of Michael De La Paz of San Antonio. Tickets are $8 for parent and child couple . JR Lounge is located at 918 W. Kingsbury.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE NHS, Continued from page 1 "This year, they are doing the homecoming court announcement at 7 o'clock versus doing them at half-time like they've always done in the past. We are also adding this year some face painting and there will be washer boards. So, we want everyone to come out early, partake in some games and some face paintings and just have a fun tailgating experience before the game starts," said Martinez. Proceeds raised from the event go to support the Navarro Education Foundation and its awarding of educational grants to classrooms district wide.

Belmarez says parents and kids are invited to dress their best and take advantage of this quality time together. "It's to keep the parents together with their kid. Right now for some parents, it's hard to get along. It's hard to get along with their kids sometimes about school and about this and about that. We want them to spend one night with their parents where they can still be loved and keep the love together," said Belmarez.

Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Matadors look to turn tables on Unicorns in 107th Guadalupe River Bowl, Friday's game to air on KWED (Seguin) - Seguin looks to end a five-game losing streak to its oldest rival Friday night when New Braunfels visits Matador Stadium in the 107th edition of the Guadalupe River Bowl. The Unicorns have won 11 of the last 12 meetings between the programs and lead the all-time series 65-38-3. Friday marks the 93rd straight season the teams have faced each other. New Braunfels held off Seguin's second half surge to win last year's clash 34-29 at Unicorn Stadium. The Matadors' last win in the rivalry was a 3831 overtime squeaker in 2013. The teams produced starkly different results in their 2019 debuts last Friday. Seguin opened head coach Travis Bush's fourth year at the helm with a 42-
21 loss to Antonian Prep in San Antonio. New Braunfels scored 24 straight points in the second half to start Glen Mangold's sixth season with a 31-14 thumping of Alamo Heights.
"They look like they clone the same guys every year," Bush said of the stingy New Braunfels defense. "They're going to have tall, rangy guys out there at outside linebacker, and their d-line plays hard, and they've got good motors."
The Matadors left San Antonio with some positives to build on offensively. Junior running-back Marques Washington ran for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries, while junior receiver Dravan McKnight totaled 157 yards through the air on 12 receptions. Washing, McKnight and teammates face a New Braunfels defense that limited Alamo Heights to 253 total yards and forced nine punts last week.
"Similar to last week, they're going to play soft in the secondary and try not to give the big play, and let the front seven go to work,Bush continued. "They're sound in everything they do. They run to the ball hard and play hard in every phase. We're going to have our hands full. We're going to have to take advantage of opportunities and make sure we protect the football, and when we get a chance to extend drives and make big plays, we've got to make them."
The Unicorns completely shut down the Mules' running game, yielding just 42 yards on 24 carries.
The Unicorns' top offensive performers against Alamo Heights were quarterback Peyton
Driggers (15-26 passing, 124 yds, 2 TD, 1 Int.), running-back Ryker Purdy (10 carries, 79 yds., 2 TD), and receiver Luke Dorrow (8 rec., 57 yds., 2 TD). Linebacker James Windrow led the defense with 10 tackles (two for loss), and safety Kobe Smith coralled an interception. Linebacker John-Michael Mata led the Seguin defense with 14 tackles against Antonian, and Dillion Gutierrez finished with 13. Mata, Martin Rivera, Ian Box, and Jeremiah Cano each recorded a tackle for loss. The Matadors did not force a turnover in the opener. Friday's kickoff at Matador Stadium is slated for 7:30 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. with the Navarro, Marion, and Lifegate coaches' shows.
Marion volleyball rolls to road win in Karnes City (Karnes City) - Marion strung together a dominant performance in Karnes City Tuesday evening, handing the Badgers a 3-0 sweep by finals of 25-16, 25-9, and 25-12. Madyson Schulze led the Bulldogs up front with seven kills, and Kaylie Miller chipped in with six. Madison Doss distributed 16 assists and sent four aces over the net. Lizzie Abrameit contributed nine assists to go with four kills and six digs.
Haylee Mabee paced the defensive effort with 11 digs and made a big impact at the service line with seven aces. Ingrid Nava added nine digs and four aces. Marion's season record is 12-10. The Bulldogs are idle the rest of the week and return to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. visit to Stockdale.

County rivals Navarro, Marion clash in Homecoming game at Erwin-Lee Field (Geronimo) - The Guadalupe County football rivalry that Marion once dominated has been controlled by Navarro in recent years, but the Bulldogs hope to buck that trend and play Homecoming spoiler Friday evening when they visit the Panthers at Erwin-Lee Field. Marion went 18-2 against Navarro between 1972 and 1997, but the Panthers have won the last nine meetings in the series, including a 50-36 triumph last season at Veterans Stadium. Both programs won their 2019 openers on the road last Friday. Navarro held off Gonzales 17-16 to start Rod Blount's second season as head coach. Marion scored 22 straight points to pull away from Luling 29-13 in the first game of Ryne Miller's second year. The Panthers churned out 382 rushing yards against Gonzales, with All-District returnees Johnny Alegria (190 yds.) and Euler DeLeon (135 yds.) each scoring a touchdown. Miller and his staff are all too familiar
5
with Navarro's Slot-T attack, its tendency to chew up the clock, and the pressure it puts on opposing offenses to be efficient with a limited number of snaps.
After watching Week 1 game field, Blount has been most impressed by a Marion defense that held Luling to 138 total yards, five first downs, and no pass completions in eight attempts.
"We've been preaching all week that when we're on the field, we've got to take advantage of it," Miller said. "We know what kind of offense they run, it's going to slow down the clock a little bit, so we're not going to get as many possessions as we want to get. We've got to make sure we have a purpose, and that purpose is to get in the end zone. We can't turn the ball over, we can't go three-and-out, we want to make sure we put long drives together, and we obviously want to get points whether it's a field goal or a touchdown."
"Their overall speed is really good," Blount said. "The secondary is fast a lot of effort, a lot of hustle. Probably the three best linebackers we've seen this year. They're solid all the way across. That's the strength of their defense. So we're really going to have to work on getting on our second and third level and staying on those blocks."
Marion's offensive leaders in the win over Luling include senior quarterback Zach Goodwin (11-23 passing, 198 yds., 1 TD, 46 rushing yds.), runningback Ray Rayos (10 carries, 51 yds., 1 TD), and receivers Samuel Montoya (2 rec., 66 yds.) and Jacob Devora (2 rec., 60 yds., 1 TD).
Jarrett Fennell set the tone early for Marion's defense last week with a 21yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Falcons hope to start new winning streak in home opener (Seguin) - The Lifegate six-man football team looks to bounce back from its first loss since November of 2017 Friday evening when it plays host to Coastal Christian Home School at Falcon Field. The Falcons dropped John Stout's debut as head coach to High Island 55-54 on Saturday to snap a 13-game winning streak that dated back to the 2017 regular season finale against New Braunfels Christian Academy.
four sacks, and keeping him out of the Falcons' backfield is a key this week for Stout. "I like to attack people like that," Stout said. "We just go right after him, because once you go to him, then the rest of the team is trying to come to him, and they're not as aggressive as he is. You take care of the aggressive one, and everything else kind of follows suit."
Lifegate displayed numerous bright spots offensively in defeat. Spread-back Quinten Shellnut completed 18-22 passing attempts for 188 yards and a touchdown while running for 113 yards and three scores. Barson Schmidt led the receivers with 54 yards on four catches.
Coastal Christian piled up 289 rushing yards last week, with eight different players sharing 21 carries. Lane Benke was the most productive runner in that group with 97 yards and three touchdowns on just four attempts.

Trump Admin Gives 1.8-Billion To States To Fight Opioid Crisis
CVS Unveils Five-Year-Investment Plan To Stop Vaping
(Washington, DC) -- The Trump administration is giving states one-point-eight-billion-dollars to fight the opioid epidemic. Speaking at the White House, President Trump said federal grants will go to communities that have been hardest hit by the opioid crisis. He argued that nothing is more important. Trump said, "So many problems are caused by this problem" of opioid addiction. He insisted that the path to opioid addiction must be broken.
(Woonsocket, RI) -- CVS is unveiling its latest efforts to reduce youth vaping. The company has partnered with Aetna, a major national insurance company, and says removing tobacco products from its shelves was just the beginning. CVS is now pledging over 50-million-dollars over the next five years towards educational materials and tools to prevent tobacco and e-cigarette use. The "Be The First" initiative aims to create the first tobacco-free generation and has already reached 13-million young people and over 200 colleges and universities.
Vehicles To Have Alerts To Prevent Hot Car Deaths (Detroit, MI) -- Automakers are pledging to add a reminder system to nearly all new U.S. vehicles to avoid deaths of children in hot cars. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and Association of Global Automakers made the announcement yesterday. The plan is to equip the vehicles with the system by the model year 2025, which reminds drivers to check the back seat after shutting off the car. Among the companies involved include General Motors, Ford and Toyota. KidsAndCars.org says 39 children have died from vehicular heatstroke so far this year.
Trump Administration Reconsiders Deportation Protection For Sick Immigrants (Undated) -- The Trump administration is restarting a program that helps seriously ill migrants avoid being deported while getting lifesaving care. The administration made the announcement Monday after having quietly stopped protections for migrants who are seriously ill. That set off backlash from members of Congress and immigrant advocates. The deferred action program allows people who are in the U.S. illegally to avoid deportation for compelling reasons, such as needing critical medical care.

I want to thank this community for supporting KWED the Seguin Daily News, and www.seguintoday.com. We greatly value your support, and it’s important for us to stop and say “thank you.” It’s an exciting time for our company. We’re pleased to announce a great change that’s coming to the Seguin Daily News. The SDN is getting a major upgrade. It’s going all digital on Monday, September 9. That means it will be available to you anytime you want it, wherever you are. You will no longer have to go hunting for a copy of the Seguin Daily News. It will be easily accessible to you via your mobile device, tablet or personal computer. We’ll be delivering our newspaper directly to you, and it will still be Free to you each day. There will be a number of ways to access our new all-digital Seguin Daily News, but the primary access point will be via our website, www.seguintoday.com. Once there, you can access the full version of the SDN, including all stories and ads. SDN advertisers will not only have their ads seen by our readers online, but our readers will also be able to click on links in the actual digital paper that will deliver those customers directly to the places where those goods and services are sold. Again, this major upgrade to the Seguin Daily News happens on Monday, September 9. If that date rings a bell, it should. September 9 is a special date for KWED, and for the Seguin community. In 1948, it was the day that KWED Radio first went on the air. In celebration of our 71st birthday, we are giving ourselves, our clients and the community this big gift -- an all-digital Seguin Daily News. For those of you, who think you are not very tech savvy, we will be heavily promoting “how to access the Seguin Daily News” information on the radio, in the SDN itself and online at www.seguintoday.com. I hope that you are as excited as we are about this digital upgrade for our very popular (AND STILL FREE) newspaper. The digital version is already available at www.seguintoday.com. Please go check it out for yourself, and flip through the pages. If you have questions, I’d love to hear from you. Call me at 830-379-2234. Sincerely,
Darren Dunn General Manager/Partner
