Celebrating 100 years of life & service

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County is helping to celebrate the 100th birthday of Charlie Willmann Sr.

The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court recently observed March 25th as the 100th Birthday Celebration for Charles “Charlie” Julius Willmann, Sr.

Willmann not only served as Guadalupe County Commissioner Pct.1 from 1988 to 1992 but also acted as county judge pro tem. He is also best known for having served as the interim county judge from May 2012 to November 2012.

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says Willmann over the years has played an important role in the operation and continuation of the county’s values, traditions and heritage.

“We wanted to recognize his 100th birthday. We know we have some very influential people in this community who have lived a very long time who have served this community well, but we have a direct connection with Charlie at the county for what he has done and we just wanted to honor him and say we appreciate that,” said Kutscher.

Willmann who attended Seguin High School began his service to others when he paused his formal education at Texas A&M College in order to enlist in the United States Navy during World War II. When he returned, he completed his degree in agricultural administration, raising award-winning pecans and becoming a part of the many service boards and organizations throughout the county.

Kutscher says one of Willmann’s most important contributions to the public was his appointment as interim county judge. Willmann’s appointment followed the resignation of, then County, Judge Mike Wiggins.

At the time, Willmann was 87 and was selected unanimously from a pool of 23 candidates who were looking to serve the temporary position.

Kutscher says Willmann’s willingness to serve

the county at that time was to not only help but to ensure the integrity of the county’s operation.

“We wanted to recognize Charlie because he’s played a pivotal role in Guadalupe County for a long time as an individual but also helped the county through a difficult time politically back in 2012, but I want to tell the story real quick about Charlie and his servant heart.

Traffic stop leads to major narcotics seizure

(Seguin) -- A recent traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Seguin has led to the discovery of more than a half a million dollars worth of cocaine.

Seguin Police Department officials say the traffic stop was reported at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25. They say Seguin PD’s Narcotics K9 Handler, assigned to its CASE Unit, conducted the traffic stop on a white BMW SUV, which was traveling eastbound on I-10 near the 617-mile marker.

After contacting the driver, the officer deployed his K9 partner, Kyra, for a free-air sniff around the vehicle. The officer says Kyra alerted to the odor of narcotics, leading to a search of the SUV. During their search of the vehicle, officers discovered 16 bundles of cocaine, totaling 17.5 kilograms or 38.65 pounds -- with an estimated street value of $560,000. Officials say the narcotics were found in a natural void area in the rear of the vehicle and in a non-factory compartment.

The driver, identified as 38-year-

old Erick Roel, of Mission, was arrested on a charge of “Conspiracy to Possess with Intent to Distribute 5 Kilograms or More of Cocaine.”

The charges have been filed in the Western District of Texas, and the case has been referred to the federal government for prosecution.

(Seguin) -- Join the Seguin Main Street Program for Moonlight & Roses, a beloved evening celebration of downtown Seguin, on Friday, April 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Memorial Rose Garden at Walnut Springs Park.

This free event invites the community to enjoy an elegant night under the stars with live jazz music, sweet treats, and the presentation of the 2024 Downtown Awards.

“Moonlight & Roses is a crowd favorite event and it is free to attend to enjoy the music and scenic views of the park,” said Kyle Kramm, Seguin Main Street & CVB director.

“This event is very special to Seguin Main Street as it is when we recognize the volunteers, businesses, and organizations that have made a lasting impact on downtown during the previous year.”

This year, five awards will be presented:

• Downtowner of the Year

• Beautification of the Year

• Volunteer of the Year

Crime Stoppers tip leads to arrest

(Guadalupe County) – A tip called into the Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers Hotline has resulted in the arrest of an area man.

Officials with the GCSO Special Investigations Bureau and Patrol Division say on Wednesday, March 26, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in an unincorporated area of Guadalupe County. They say the arrest is due to an ongoing narcotics investigation that originated from a Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers Tip. That tip, in the end, resulted in the seizure of 286 grams of THC (143 THC Cartridges), 2 Glock pistols, 1 AR pistol along with numerous magazines and ammunition for the weapons. The suspect, Julio Arreguin, was arrested and charged with Manufacture and Delivery of a Controlled Substance PG 2 4g-400g and Possession of a Controlled Substance PG2 4g-400g.

Roses, continued.

Providing the evening’s soundtrack is the Dirty River Jazz Band, sure to entertain guests with their lively tunes. While soaking in the music, attendees can enjoy complimentary desserts and are encouraged to bring their own beverages, lawn chairs, or picnic blankets to relax and enjoy the beautiful garden setting.

To elevate your evening, consider purchasing a Picnic Basket for Two for $85. Each basket includes charcuterie, wine glasses, a picnic blanket, and other delightful extras. Baskets can be reserved in advance at the Seguin Visitor Center (200 South Austin Street), with a limited

number also available for purchase during the event. All proceeds support downtown beautification efforts.

Guests will also have the opportunity to purchase commemorative wine glasses and enter raffles to win rose arrangements generously donated by local florists.

Make an evening of it by first stopping at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum’s Annual Open House from 5 to 7 p.m., before heading over to Moonlight & Roses for a night of music, celebration, and community spirit.

Save the date, Friday, April 4, and celebrate the heart of downtown Seguin surrounded by jazz, roses, and good company.

100, continued.

You can tell by the proclamation; he has served on all of these boards. He’s donated and volunteered his time in numerous ways to all types of people, families and organizations but he got appointed after a selection process -- a bunch of interviews with commissioners court members and he comes in as county judge and he is standing over when our offices were at the Justice Center and he gets his (paper) check at that point. It wasn’t a pay stub and Doreen, my assistant, was standing there and I was standing in my office, and he had this complete look of disbelief on his face and I looked at him and said ‘Charlie, is the amount not right?’ He goes, ‘Kyle, I didn’t know I was going to get paid.’ That’s truly the kind of individual that he was. He always just wanted to help. He always was there,” said Kutscher.

Willmann’s 100th birthday was observed with a proclamation during last week’s meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court.

Kutscher continued that celebration with Willmann by attending a special birthday gathering this Saturday with family and friends.

Top FDA Vaccine Official Resigns, Cites RFK’s “Misinformation And Lies”

(Washington, DC) -- The FDA’s top vaccine official is resigning. Doctor Peter Marks abruptly stepped down from his role Friday, citing Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s “misinformation and lies.” Marks said Kennedy’s stance against vaccines is irresponsible and poses a danger to the public. Marks reportedly resigned under pressure, with the New York Times reporting he was told he could either resign or be fired. The news comes just hours after Kennedy claimed COVID-19 didn’t kill healthy people, despite research showing that 30-percent of those who died in the pandemic didn’t have underlying conditions.

Utah Bans Fluoride In Public Water System

Trump To Announce Pharma Tariffs Soon

(Washington, DC) -- President Trump says he’ll be expanding his tariffs to include pharmaceuticals. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said the U.S. can’t rely on other countries for our medications. Earlier today, Trump said his upcoming auto tariffs against Canada, Mexico, China and the European Union, will undo decades of those powers “taking advantage of the U.S.” Those tariffs are set to take effect April 2nd, on what Trump is calling “liberation day.”

Measles Cases Rise Significantly

(Atlanta, GA) -- Measles cases are up significantly this week. That’s according to new data from the CDC. Nearly half of the country is now reporting cases of the contagious virus.
