Teens murdered in Pleasanton have links to Seguin

Family seeking financial support to help cover funeral arrangements

(Seguin) -- The heartbreak following the loss of two murdered teens in Pleasanton has stretched its way here to Seguin. According to family, the murdered brothers 14year Mesiah Rangel and 17-year-old Johnny Ray Gomez Jr. are natives of Seguin who moved to the South Texas town with their mother Courtney Garcez a few years ago.

According to the Pleasanton Police Department, the mother just before 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, called police after finding her two sons dead in an outside shed.   Pleasanton Police say they have since taken two suspects into custody -- both are also juveniles who were found nearby in a vehicle.

Friends and family of the two teens murdered in Pleasanton will be hosting an enchilada casserole plate fundraiser and bake sale this Saturday beginning at noon at Savannah’s Snacks and Snow Cones located at 6532 State Highway 123. Plates are $12 and will be sold while supplies last.

Officials say evidence found inside that vehicle as well as evidence recovered at two other locations throughout the city have allegedly linked them to the crime scene.  Teens, pg. 3

Batter Up: Seguin Little League looking for another Grand Slam Season

Players, coaches, families plus community help celebrate Opening Day

(Seguin) – Spring officially got underway this Saturday with the opening ceremonies for the 2025 Seguin Little League Season. The opening ceremony welcomed another season for the baseball, softball and Challenger programs.

Guadalupe County Sheriff Joshua Ray threw out the opening pitch for baseball. When asked about his arm, the Sheriff said it felt pretty good despite the years that have since taken place since he was on that Little League mound.

“How’s my arm? It’s older. It was good. I enjoyed it. I’ve got memories just like most of us growing up in this country with Little League baseball.

I played Little League baseball. My son who is now in the Air Force and is grown, he played Little League baseball so it’s fun to be out here and support the kids,” said Ray.

Also hitting the strike zone like a pro was Seguin Mayor Donna Dodgen. Dodgen, says the Little League program is more than just about sports. She says the group plays an important role in the growth and spirit of the Seguin community.

“I think Little League and the Challenger League, the start of that, is so important to our community and it’s so important to the development of the total community. I mean think about learning about the fundamentals

and learning teamwork and working together and knowing the different parents and what that will do to our community, if that ever goes away. It just would not enhance our community. It would just continue to be splintered and we wouldn’t be able to as they move into the junior high and high school,  those skills would be lost and I’m not saying that anything else is not an exquisite way to learn things but this is just how we begin and it’s very important to our community and the number of cars today, the number of people, the number of families, it’s a great thing. Today is a good, good day,” said Dodgen. Season, pg. 3

TxDOT issues traffic warning

(Seguin) – Here’s a traffic alert from TxDOT. Today through Wednesday, there will be nightly right-lane closures on IH 10 eastbound between the exit ramp to State Highway 46 and the entrance ramp just past SH 46. The lane will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. so that the contractor can perform bridgework. Meanwhile, at the same time, there will be full closures of Highway 46 between the 1H-10 eastbound frontage road and the IH-10 westbound frontage road.

Officials ask that local drivers seek alternate routes if possible or plan for slower travel.

The working theory by police is that the two suspects went to rob the two boys of personal property when something obviously went wrong. Both of those suspects are currently charged with capital murder.

seeking financial help to cover the cost of the funeral services.

A GoFundMe account has been established to help raise money.

The funeral for the boys is currently being planned here in Seguin where they have many extended family members including their grandmother.

Season, continued.

A public vigil is also being planned here in Seguin for a later date.  Meanwhile, the family is

Also invited to the mound this year was Joe Guerra of the McQueeney Lions Club. Guerra says he had the privilege of throwing out the first pitch in support of the Little League’s Challenger Program, an adaptive baseball program for individuals with physical and intellectual challenges.

“I have a nephew that plays with the league and we play bingo every week and we have just such a big population from Seguin and McQueeney and we just generate so much money for charity. So, we are always looking for people that could use our help. So, that’s why we do it. We have a lot of people in the Lions Club, a lot of volunteers who say let’s do something good for the community. You can’t beat this. This to me is just fantastic that we are able to do this. We all love the community because look how many people that you have here that just come out – not only the parents but everybody else. This is just a big part of what we do,” said

Excited about getting this season underway is Roy Garcia, president of the Seguin Little League board of directors.

Garcia says expect to see games on most nights over at  the Little League fields in Max Starcke Park from now through the end of May.

“I think this year; we were right around 700 kids on both baseball and softball. So, we had a good turnout. It started off a little slow but luckily, everyone came in piling in at the end so it’s looking good for the spring. We are excited for it,” said Garcia. “We’ve had a couple of rain delays, but we

are adjusting to it. I think this year, we  have enough games for everybody. We are sitting around 20 games for each team.”

Of course, like any non-profit organization, the group relies heavily on community and business support. He says although the season has kicked off, there are always opportunities to grow the program.

“There are many different ways. We are trying to have some vendors set up in here. We are going to start doing some different advertisements on this blackboard right here underneath the press box. But it’s always great to have people out here even if their kids aren’t here just to come out and support local kids playing in the league,” said Garcia. Those wishing to support the Seguin Little League are encouraged to message the group via its Facebook page.

OPINION

Understanding the real impact of school’s choice

There has been much confusing rhetoric about a new state voucher program. Recently the Texas House released it’s billion-dollar House Bill 3. Under HB3, most participating students would receive about $11,000. The amount of money for home-schooled students is set at $2,000 a year. More is available for special needs students.

As it turns out, the local ISD loses that student’s state funding when they no longer attend.

In order to understand the local impact, let’s examine the situation in Sequin ISD (SISD) which has 7,300 students. They receive about $4,800 in state funding per pupil per year. So, if just 150 voucher students leave, SISD loses over $700,000 per year.

Which leads me to the following questions:

• Can SISD and its surrounding community afford to lose those funds?

Especially when they are already deficit spending $4 million.

• What happens to the teachers, staff, students, parents, local businesses, etc.?

• How many accredited private school options are nearby to consider? And would they even accept a student who is special?

• Will their property taxes go up to make up for that lost state money?

• Where exactly is that lost money going? And by whom will it be spent?

• Who else will be the “losers” and “winners” when vouchers become the law of the land?

Many other citizens have the same questions. Perhaps they should ask them to their Texas State House Representative SOON.

Young

Sylvia “Toby” Young, of Seguin, passed from death unto eternal life on February 25, 2025.

Toby was born in McQueeney, Texas on February 9, 1949, to Gomecinda (Cortez) and Jose Young, Sr.

She is survived by her two sisters, Maria “Chita” Young Teneyuque and Ofelia “Faye” Young Gloria (husband Joe Gloria), a host of nephews and nieces and many other family and friends.

Toby is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Anita Young, Lydia Young, Minerva “Minnie” Garcia, Lucia “Lucy” Aleman, and her brothers, Reinaldo Young, Rudolfo “Rudy” Young, and Joe Young, Jr.

Toby always brought a unique perspective to every connection she formed, whether it was professional or personal. She honed her professional skills for over 30 years at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she had an eye for detail and a commitment to excellence. Toby’s career was not limited to just Southwestern Bell, but she also used her artistic flair playing musical instruments at church and as a professional photographer. Her photos could always capture the beauty and joy of weddings, quinceaneras, parties, and a myriad of other festivities. Toby always had a passion for capturing life’s most precious moments; as in her life, she always wanted the beauty of each musical note and/or photograph to be presented in the best light possible.

Toby offered her strength beyond measure to those she loved. Known for her candid honesty and tireless work ethic, she was a loyal friend and a steadfast ally, always willing to lend a helping hand. Her unique personality set her apart. She valued authenticity and remained true to herself without concern for other’s opinions.

Toby was an avid fan of solitaire on the computer and football on her television, two of her favorite leisure pursuits that mirrored her independent

spirit and the confidence she held in herself.

A proud alumnus of Seguin High School’s Class of 1968, Toby has left a lasting impact in her beloved hometown. Her life’s journey has been marked by a rich blend of professional, personal achievements and endeavors.

Most of all, she was renowned for her unwavering faith in God. Her dedication to her faith and community was exemplified by her long-standing membership at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Seguin, Texas, where she served as a Guadalupana for many years.

Above all, she believed that Christ Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. She loves Jesus. Her hope is in Jesus. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 states, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

On February 25, 2025, Toby received her crown. She’s beheld her Heavenly Father’s face. She’s touched her Savior’s hand. It is well with her soul. She is home.

RFK Backs Measles Vaccine

(Washington, DC) -- Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is pushing for people to get vaccinated against measles. Kennedy, who has been known for vaccine skepticism, made the call in an opinion piece on Fox News Sunday. Last week authorities reported the first measles death in the U.S. since 2015 as a measles outbreak has led to hospitalizations in Texas. While noting that the decision to vaccinate is a personal one, Kennedy said the vaccine protects children and contributes to community immunity.

Judge Extends Block Of Trump’s Gender-Affirming Care Ban

(Undated) -- A judge is extending the block on President Trump’s gender-affirming care ban. Trump signed an executive order to withhold federal funds from institutions that provide gender-affirming care to minors. That order was initially blocked by a federal judge who extended the injunction on Friday. The judge said Trump’s ban would violate the Constitution’s Fifth Amendment, which grants equal protection under the law. The judge says Trump’s orders would prevent doctors from providing necessary medical treatment to transgender youth, even if it was unrelated to gender identity.

CDC: HPV Vaccine Effective

(Undated) -- The HPV vaccine seems to be effective, according to a new government report. The CDC says the vaccine against the human papillomavirus has reduced the rate of pre-cancerous lesions among women by 80 percent since 2008. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the country and causes more than ten-thousand cases of cervical cancer a year.

A Nasal Spray For Concussions Looks Promising

(Boston, MA) -- Smelling salts are coveted by athletes but scientist may have found something even better. Researchers at Mass General Brigham studied the effects of an antibody based nasal spray on brain-injured mice. The spray seemed to improve the brain’s natural healing process while simultaneously reducing damaging inflammation. The findings could lead to a preventive treatment against the long-tern implications of traumatic brain injuries and other conditions like stroke.
