Tomorrow marks deadline for Christian Cupboard preparing to KWED Christmas Angel contest serve families over holiday break ters explaining why they felt that their families were needing or deserving of $500 cash. However, the KWED Christmas Angel this year is putting the pen into the hands of teachers, youth ministers, coaches or youth mentors in the Seguin area who not only work closely with students but who often times know the specific needs that those families face. This year, these adults are encouraged to write as many letters as they wish for the different individual families they hope to help. However, only one student and their family will be selected for the $500 prize. By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -Teachers, coaches, youth mentors, youth ministers, camp counselors or anyone who knows a child or family that can use $500 this holiday season have only a couple of more days in which to lend a helping hand. Tuesday is the deadline for

this year's KWED Christmas Angel contest. As continued to be reported, the KWED Christmas Angel has taken a new route of reaching kids and their families who need a little help this holiday season. For years students, 18 and under, have been encouraged to write their own let-

By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) -- After this week, local kids will be off enjoying their holiday vacation and while ham, turkey and dining out might just be part of all the fun, it might also be part of the struggle for those families who already find it difficult to just get food on the table every other day. Regina Lee, the director of the Seguin Christian Cupboard, Seguin's food pantry, says in the midst of their ongoing holiday food drive, volunteers can't help but think about an increase in demand for food that will begin coming through their doors next week. Lee says for many families, school lunches are important and often times are the only source of nutrition for local children.

"Remember, we have children that are on the free lunch program that will be at home for two weeks and that means that they'll take all of their meals from home and we try to be a little more generous when we have children and families especially at that time because we know they need to eat," said Lee. Lee says for these families, eating out is often times not an option. Plus, she says the need for basic food outweighs any demand for any holiday favorites. "If the need may arise and it will sometimes that they have to come back within the 30 day period, we have to make exceptions for that and so I have to have something on the shelves," said Lee. Carl Gustafson announces retirement as Texas Lutheran’s head football coach

(Seguin) - Carl Gustafson, a two-time American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year, is retiring as head football coach of the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs. Gustafson made the announcement Thursday afternoon to his players and to his coaching staff. “This has been my 35th year doing what I love to do,” said Gustafson. “But in those 35 years, for me to be able to do what I loved to do, a lot of people made sacrifices. My wife Charlotte, she has been my strongest supporter and encourager. The reality is that during these past 35 years she has had to run the household and in many ways raise our kids, allowing me to go and chase my dreams. Charlotte has always been so supportive. She understands the positive impact that coaching has on young people’s lives. Football as a game gives us a lot of opportunities to teach life lessons.”

“You are coaching a game you love, and you are building lifelong relationships along the way. Ultimately, that is the best reward that there could be. The irony is that many coaches get into this profession because they want to have a positive impact on young people. While we hope that we have had an impact on them, we know that they have had a profound impact on our lives. In many ways it is not a profession but a way of life. I will miss that way of life. Both of our kids are getting ready to graduate, one from a doctoral program and one from graduate school, and I’ve gotten to a point that I look forward to a little slower pace and to being home.”

Gustafson retires after three seasons with the Bulldogs. He was the 2017 and the 2019 ASC Coach of the Year. He registered the second-best winning percentage in school history for a TLU head football coach with more than 15 wins. “I’m so grateful for all that Coach Gus has given to TLU,” TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell said. “He is a talented coach, a great teacher, and a valued member of our community. He has done an outstanding job, and he will be missed.” Gustafson and the Bulldogs went 21-9 in his three seasons as head coach, producing a winning percentage of .700. This past season, Gustafson guided the Bulldogs to a program-best second-place finish in the ASC. TLU went 8-2 overall and 8-1 in league play. “I am so appreciative to end my coaching career at Texas Lutheran,” said Gustafson. “This university is all about relationships, and it is all about its people. And I sincerely cannot imagine a better place for young people to pursue a college degree. That is why it was always so easy to recruit here because I knew what this university could do for young people. I will cherish for the rest of my life the relationships that were developed and nurtured here at this university. I love what this university stands for. Part of what it stands for is that sense of community, and I am so thankful that I have been able to be a part of the TLU community. I will always be TLU’s No. 1 fan.” See GUSTAFSON, page 5

Brought to you exclusively by: First Commercial Bank Sports Gustafson steps down after three successful season at TLU GUSTAFSON, continued from page 4 “This university is what it is because of the leadership we have been blessed to have through the years. I would be remiss if I did not express my gratitude to Dr. Stuart Dorsey, who was president when I was hired for this role, to current TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell for her continued support and encouragement, and to Director of Athletics Bill Miller for his leadership, guidance, and friendship. Coach Miller leads an athletics department that is focused on the kids first. And that is the way that it should be. Looking to the future, the best is yet to come for our football program, and the best is yet to come for this university because of its people.”

tied for the Bulldogs’ then best-ever finish in the ASC. Gustafson and the Bulldogs carried that 2017 momentum into the 2018 and 2019 seasons, compiling an overall record of 15-5 (.750) and a league mark of 14-4 (.778) in that two-year span. “My heart is full because of the guys on the team these past three seasons,” said Gustafson. “I have been truly privileged to call myself their head coach. Football teams are always measured by wins and losses, and this team has made us proud in that regard, but I am most proud and most rewarded by how these young men handle themselves off the field and in the classroom. I will miss the players dearly.”

In 2017, Gustafson’s first year as head coach, he took a team coming off a 2-8 season and produced a 6-4 overall record and 6-3 mark in the always-tough ASC. TLU had six returning starters on offense and two returning starters on defense when Gustafson took the job on Nov. 17, 2016. In the 2017 ASC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, TLU was picked seventh out of 10 teams.

“In addition to being with our players, if I have done anything else well, it is that I have been able to play a part in building what I think is one of the best coaching staffs in this area. It has been a dream of mine to be able to coach with many of these men, and I will miss them. I will miss their camaraderie. They are all great coaches, but more than that they are all really good men and good role models for our young people.”

But with a vastly improved defense and a powerful rushing attack, Gustafson and the Bulldogs grabbed a third-place league finish that

TLU’s eight wins in the ASC in 2019 were the most by a Bulldog squad in the university’s 18 seasons in the ASC (1998-2012, 2017-

present). The eight overall wins marked just the eighth time in TLU’s 85 football seasons that the Bulldogs won that many games in a single season. The 2019 Bulldogs were ranked in the Top 25 and in the NCAA Division III South Region rankings at times during the 2019 season, and TLU played for the conference championship on Nov. 9 at defending national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor. “Not only did Carl Gustafson consistently win football games for us at Texas Lutheran, he always did it with class, integrity, and professionalism,” said Bill Miller, TLU’s director of athletics. “I will miss Carl. He always did things the right way, and I never had to worry about the direction he was taking our football program. His coaching record, but more importantly his record of molding and mentoring our student-athletes, will long be remembered here.” “And as much as I want Carl to stay with us and continue, I know that when a coach knows it is time to retire, then it is time to retire. I wish Carl and his wife Charlotte all the best in Carl’s retirement. It will be an adjustment for all of us, but I am happy for Carl and for Charlotte and their family. We have been very blessed to have them with us.”

Ricky Matt named 22nd head football coach in Texas Lutheran history (Seguin) - Ricky Matt, Texas Lutheran University’s assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator, has accepted the university’s offer to become the 22nd head football coach in program history. Matt (pronounced “MOTT”) succeeds Carl Gustafson, who announced his retirement on Thursday. Gustafson, a two-time American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year, was TLU’s head coach for three seasons and produced a 21-9 overall record and 20-7 mark in the ASC. The Bulldogs were 8-2 overall and 8-1 in the ASC in 2019. “We are thrilled that Ricky Matt is the new head football coach at Texas Lutheran University,” TLU President Dr. Debbie Cottrell said. “As an alum of Texas Lutheran and a former Bulldog football player, Coach Matt knows and loves this place - its people, its student-athletes, its culture, and its history.” “Coach Matt is a dedicated Bulldog who has had tremendous success here as an assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, and I have full confidence that this success will continue as he assumes the role of head coach. As

he retires, Carl Gustafson is leaving our football program in outstanding shape, and we are forever grateful for the job that Coach Gus did. I believe that Coach Matt will continue this tradition of excellence and push the program to new heights in the American Southwest Conference and in the NCAA Division III.” Matt was one of the first hires by Gustafson after Gustafson accepted the TLU head coaching position on Nov. 17, 2016. Matt was named defensive coordinator on Jan. 10, 2017. He served as defensive coordinator in all three of Gustafson’s seasons as head coach. Matt was promoted to assistant head coach prior to the 2018 season. “Coach Gus brought me back to TLU, and I want to thank him for giving me that opportunity,” said Matt, a 1979 graduate of TLU and a member of the university’s 1975 NAIA-II National Championship squad. “It has been a privilege to coach with him. His integrity and leadership have been examples to all of us. What I like most about Coach Gus is that in every decision he made he had the players’ best interest at heart. Coach Gus loves his players, and they love him.”

“The top priorities for me now will be to keep our staff together and our team together and to recruit student-athletes that will make us better. It comes down to recruiting, retaining, and graduating. Our goals always will be to win the conference championship and to make the playoffs. At TLU we want to dream big. We believe we can accomplish anything if we have faith, courage, and enthusiasm. I believe positive relationships are everything. The cornerstones of this program will be faith, family, education, and football.” Matt, 62, has 41 years of football coaching experience. He has coached collegiately at TLU, Central Arkansas, Trinity (Texas), Texas State-San Marcos, Texas A&M-Kingsville, McNeese State (La.), Nicholls State (La.), and Louisiana State-Monroe. “This is a special opportunity at TLU, and I thank our university president, Dr. Debbie Cottrell, for the trust and faith she has placed in me,” said Matt. “We are lucky to have her as our president. She understands the importance of athletics and the critical role that athletics plays in our university’s life.” “And I want to thank our Director of Athletics Bill Miller. Coach Miller was a teammate of

mine on the 1975 national championship team, when I was a freshman and he was a junior. I consider him to be my mentor. I believe that Coach Miller has given of himself to TLU as much as anybody. He’s done so as a player, as a coach and as an athletics director. Coach Miller is a winner, and we appreciate all that he does for the university and the athletics department.” Matt’s three years at TLU as defensive coordinator have produced three of the best statistical years in the Bulldogs’ non-scholarship era, which started in 1998. The Bulldogs went from allowing 38.2 points per game in 2016 (the year before Matt’s arrival) to allowing 29.2 in 2017 – a ninepoint improvement per game. TLU also went from two overall wins in 2016 to six wins in 2017. The points allowed per game by the TLU defense has gone from 29.2 in 2017, to 26.9 in 2018, to a new TLU DIII-era record of 18.4 points per game in 2019. Under Matt, TLU became a much better defense against the run. The Bulldogs went from giving up 171.6 yards of rushing per game in 2016 to allowing only 91.8 yards per game in 2017. TLU defensive coordinator Matt takes head coaching reins team turnover margin per game of plus-1.5. That turnover margin currently ranks sixth in NCAA Division III.

NEWCOACH, continued from page 5 The 2018 squad set the TLU DIII-era record for rushing defense by allowing only 76.5 rushing yards per contest. The 2019 squad came within six yards per game of tying the mark of the 2018 team. This past season, the TLU defense gave up only 82.5 yards on the ground per game.

The TLU defense also ranks 12th nationally in defensive touchdowns, with four, and ranks 23rd in fumbles recovered, with 12. In the team’s road upset this year of thenNo. 6 Hardin-Simmons, the Bulldogs scored three defensive touchdowns in a 38-27 win in Abilene, Texas. The victory was the Bulldogs’ second-ever win at HSU’s Shelton Stadium.

In Matt’s three years as defensive coordinator, the Bulldogs have produced the top three rushing defense seasons of TLU’s NCAA Division III era, spanning 22 seasons.

The Bulldog defense this year also ranked 24th nationally in sacks, at 3.2 per contest, and 30th in team tackles for loss, at 8.0 per game.

“When we hired Ricky Matt in January of 2017, I said he was on the short list of the best defensive minds in this state and this part of the country,” said Gustafson. “That wasn’t just a lot of talk. Hiring Ricky as our defensive coordinator was one of the best moves we could make when we came back to TLU in 2017. Ricky did an outstanding job in that first year, and our defense and our whole team continued to improve in each successive year with the help of his knowledge and guidance.”

Matt also has extensive coaching experience at the high school level. Matt has coached at Converse Judson, San Antonio Reagan, Nederland, New Braunfels, Samuel Clemens (in Schertz, Texas), Crowley (La.), and Opelousas (La.). Just prior to his return to TLU as a coach, Matt was at Converse Judson High School, where he served as the defensive coordinator of the Rockets for three seasons (201416).

“I am so happy that he is the new head coach for this program. I know that Ricky is thrilled to be the head coach at his alma mater. He’s ready for the challenge.” TLU’s pass defense numbers under Matt also have enjoyed significant improvement. In Matt’s first season as defensive coordinator, 2017, the Bulldogs allowed 309.1 passing yards per game. That number dropped to 259.8 per game in 2018 and fell to 203.7 per contest this season. The Bulldogs’ 2019 pass defense allowed the fewest passing touchdowns (10) in TLU’s 22 seasons since the re-start of the football program in 1998. The total number of opponent touchdowns allowed (24) in 2019 also set a new TLU DIII-era record for fewest TDs allowed in a season. The

2019 squad broke the DIII-era record by six touchdowns. The defense’s improvement combined with the Bulldogs’ bruising, ball-control offense produced a runner-up finish in the ASC in 2019 and a pair of third-place ASC finishes (in 2017 and 2018). Counting TLU, there are 10 football teams in the American Southwest Conference. “Coach Matt is one of the best defensive minds around, and I am excited to see him in action as our new head football coach,” said Bill Miller, TLU’s director of athletics.

“What Coach Matt has done with our defense and our players in three years is simply amazing. Coach Matt and Coach Gustafson worked extremely well together, and their coaching and teaching, along with hard work from all of the members of our football coaching staff, led to our best three-year stretch in the ASC. I know Coach Matt is dedicated and driven to keep this high level of success going.” Matt coached playing All-American and Academic All-American® Manny Longoria for three seasons. Matt was instrumental in moving

Longoria, a safety in his first year with the Bulldogs, to the defensive line. Over the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons, Longoria set new TLU school records for career sacks (24.5) and for career tackles for loss (46.5). Longoria, a three-time All-ASC selection, collected two All-South Region honors. Free safety James Bell, another three-time All-ASC choice, garnered three consecutive All-South Region accolades. The 2019 TLU defense combined with the TLU offense to produce a

Matt played on Texas Lutheran’s 1975 NAIA-II National Championship team, coached by Jim Wacker. Matt also played on the Bulldogs’ 1976 NAIA-II National Semifinal team, coached by Dan Knight. Matt was a defensive back for the Bulldogs. Matt has a master’s degree in Education and Administration (Supervision) from Louisiana State University - Monroe. Matt and his wife Susan will celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary in December. Susan and Ricky have three children - Megan, Jerod, and Ross - and three grandchildren, with a fourth grandchild due in March.

A memorial service celebrating Greg’s life will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 12 P.M. at the Guadalupe County Fairgrounds arena. Greg was born in Sugarland, TX on March 20, 1967. We lost a great one. Greg’s charm and demeanor are something to be remembered. Horses and children loved and clung to him for safety and comfort. Cowboy was his way and he never let anyone tell him how to live. He never met a stranger and would welcome anyone into his heart. He never backed down from a challenge and would set it straight with anyone that got out of line or crossed him. “No fear” was his motto and “Ain’t Scared” was his creed. In fact, the only thing he feared was losing the ones he loved. If you knew him, you knew where you stood with him. His help was free and offered with no hesitation. Anytime he showed up, the day got better and there was always an adventure to be had. He could never sit still and constantly kept his mind busy. He had a little “outlaw” in his blood, but not in a bad way. Greg Carr lived and loved life to the fullest and will be greatly missed. More People Die At Home Instead Of In Hospital

NY Governor Orders Insurers To Treat Vaping Like Cigarettes

(Boston, MA) -- For the first time since the early 20th century, home has surpassed the hospital as the most common place of death in the United States. According to a report in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2017, 29.8 percent of deaths by natural causes happened in hospitals compared with 30.7 percent at home. According to researchers, death at home is preferred by most people whenever possible. This indicates, they say, a need for a greater priority to be placed upon improving access to high quality home care for older Americans and those with serious illnesses.

(Albany, NY) -- Governor Andrew Cuomo wants New York state insurers to treat vaping like cigarettes. He announced today that the insurers are being advised they must cover the cost associated with most vaping cessation treatments without co-pays, coinsurance and deductibles. It would mean using the same methods recommended for smoking cessation. Cuomo says the use of e-cigarettes has exploded in recent years and people who want to quit are having trouble because it's more addictive than previously thought.

Some People Using Fish Antibiotics Over Drugs For Humans

Twitter Reacts To Home Depot Opioid Claim

(Columbia, SC) -- A new study suggests some people appear to be buying fish antibiotics for themselves, because the drugs for fish cost a lot less than antibiotics for humans. Researchers from the University of South Carolina looked into online reviews from two dozen websites selling fish antibiotics. More than two out of one-hundred reviews seem to indicate people were buying the products for their own use. The researchers say labels for the fish drugs might not be much different from the ingredients panel for human antibiotics, but fish meds aren't regulated so it's unclear what they actually contain.

(Atlanta, GA) -- Home Depot is facing a backlash on Twitter after the CEO tied a rise in thefts to the opioid epidemic. Craig Menear told investors Wednesday that the company thinks millions of dollars in organized thefts are somehow tied into the opioid crisis, but they're not positive. No studies were cited. One Twitter user responded to the news by asking if we're just blaming everything on the opioid crisis now. Another user suggested that instead of opioid users rushing in to steal toilet seats, perhaps store security is just lacking..
