01 Ocean Center Caza Architect ¡ 2017 Mixed Used Building Re-Thinking in the Future 1st Award

Design a civic center for a coastal village with a booming tourism market. The center should provide structures with year-round public use that range from recreational to commercial with the goal of giving local artisans and farmers a place to engage with outsiders while ensuring that centers is integrated into the ocean-side landscape in a way that acknowledges the massive risks by architecture from climate change. Coastal Architecture in the age of climate change has become an increasingly precarious proposition. At the Ocean Center project, we developed a way of building in a coastal environment that anticipates massive change. Both ground and structure are designed as open systems that enable their surroundings to flow through in calculated and measured ways so that the forces of nature activate architectural spaces at different intensities. The modulation of natural systems such as air movement, solar radiation, and tidal currents through the architectural techniques of walls, roofs and floor makes it possible to determine the materialization of program through nature.

02 Rome Contemporary Chapel United Lab · 2017 Chapel Archi-Medium Competition

We propose building a chapel that would allow for public space in the ur-ban environment. This chapel would stand as a religious landmark, as well as a convenient meeting place. The concept consists of two circular nodes that would be placed on the south and north sides of the site, creating the shape of the building and the plaza. The circle on the north side will be the core of the building. The other side of the chapel, on the other hand, will form a public plaza around the tree in the yard. This tree is a metaphor for religious origins, similar to the ‘tree of life.’ The chapel will connect to the surrounding context by serving as a public, universal, religious, and communal space. The yard is connected to the administrative space of the church through the building’s front entrance, and is also connected to the upper worship space along a circular ramp which also leads to the second level of the old building. What we notice is the need for a church and public space in the new era at this site in the historic city of Rome. Rome Contemporary Chapel aims to be a place of encounter, dialogue and peace. The material of a space is different depending on whether the space is used for public or religious reasons. Public space is concise and restful with a solid opaque white stone so that people may interact with land-scape in the yard.

03 VERNON BLVD Haak Architect · 2017 Type: Hospitality complication of DOB set

This project is a two-part program: Vernon Boulevard and 12th Street. The two residential rental buildings share a single site. Vernon Boulevard holds 565 market-rate units, and, as the companion to Vernon Boulevard, 12th Street is an inclusionary housing building of 142 affordable units and 4 market-rate units. The main entrance into Vernon Boulevard is found on 31st Avenue along the building’s storefront. The project’s exterior façade is pieced together into one fabric using three unique wall types. The first wall type is the most prevalent. It is a rainscreen system assembled from porcelain tiles alternating among three different tones of grey. The second wall type features a white glazed metal frame. The frame is arranged in an irregular orthogonal pattern and furthermore is randomly dispersed throughout the building’s overall surface. The third wall type is composed of insulated metal panels that can be viewed only from the courtyard. As one, the wall types make a richly textured yet highly efficient façade system. Located minutes from Manhattan, the buildings are ideally situated among all five NYC boroughs. Additionally, with over 210 feet of frontage along the waterfront, the buildings offer their residents panoramic skyline views of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The neighborhood nearby hosts an abundance of green space, diverse cultural attractions, and an easy access to various modes of public transportation, such as complimentary shuttle service to the subway and water taxi.

05 Floating; Public Center of Low Carbon City Syracuse University · 2015 · Team (Mei Fupeng, Sehyun Lee) Type: Mixed Used (Hotel · Office · Dormitory) Shenzhen Low Carbon City Competition - Honorable Award)

Shenzhen Low Carbon City has been under construction since 2010. By rethinking the relationship between podium and tower, Floating intends to create a public center not only for the Low Carbon City area, but for Pingdi city more widely. In this design, our aim has been to maximize the potential of Low Carbon City by inserting a series of public activities into otherwise inactivated spaces. The project’s contention is that Low Carbon City is best conceived as a Green building-Public Center – that is, as a neighborhood capable of informing the wider population about the benefits of a low carbon lifestyle through the construction of a series of public events. Visitors to the Green Building Public Center can experience a range of sustainable technologies via a series of calibrated activities. The building’s form matters. The thinner-than usual tower permits daylight to permeate the interior. The traditional podium is dissolved to produce a number of public platforms. In the daytime, theses steel platforms are designed to reflect the sky, and at night the density of perforated stainless steel plates permits light from the building’s interior to escape into the neighboring public spaces. Generally, the proposed building contains three systems of organization: a system of vertical circulation, a system of horizontal circulation across the platforms, and a system that seeks to connect the building to its surrounding environments. Our thesis is that this simple combinatory strategy is capable of creating a vertical building typology suitable for a Low carbon city.

This project has memorial meaning for 50th establishment diplomatic relationship of Korea & Canada. This pavilion which will be installed at open area in front of the Canada Embassy in Korea means harmonious two countries, Korea& Canada, by shaping interlacing through holding hands together. Harmony is balanced relationship that is not leaning to one side but parallel and symmetry. For expressing these characters, we make symbol harmonious space by making each two sides which are staring from separate points gather in only one center.

CONCEPT & PROCESS

UNION This project has a meaning that the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This notice is placed in front of the Embassy OF Canada Pavilion, basically two right hands from having to hold the shape of the two entangled unity means. Unity of the tilt in either direction without power as symmetrical balanced parallel relationship says. These characteristics to expose the two faces from two different points of the gathered in the middle of the space as a symbolic form of unity

MASS PROCESS

3m x 5m to each end of the box to adjust the shape opens up the eyes of copper and possible to form the outer wall inlet. And to show unity in the form of enters the quaywall thickness of the two by giving a structural woven put so that may play a role. And these forms are formed by ă„ą,ă„´ stand and bench space, by installing shelves is to serve as a shelter.

DECK

The Program contains three main functions. First, benches and shelves sit down and relax and to install things can be place. The second is the protection of the existing tree that can be seen inside the stand and through the center of the cheongjangbu can enjoy watching the scenery. Third, stand and bench space and is shaped like a square of each laced with the community to relax and creates space

ASSEMBLY

2INCH X 2INCH of wood was used for structural; STACKING ASSEMBLY for structure was solved by creating the form. Not a joint member and, in some cases, bolted is also available.

07 Field of Terra Fluxes Professional work· 2012 ·DND Architecture AC-CA Competition

This proposal is started from reconsideration of bridge as a byproduct from industrial society as visual and functional perspective by placing nature and human on the dichotomy thought. Experience of relationship as a main concept the revelation of ‘visual’ function from bridge is allowed to be feasible in the consideration of characteristics of Amsterdam city and its continuity; and making figuration for short story of memory with experiential formation. The Characteristic of geography in Amsterdam, which is a flexible flow, is to be configured and it gives tis meaning as a tool providing various social and cultural events. The proposed bridge has a symbiotic relationship with nature in the everyday life which allows enjoying spare times and seeks for various cultural activities. New bridge provides various experiences as a part of city. Through this, it is to confirm the identity of city and raise the city value for Amsterdam. The juxtaposition that is not planned between the programs. The possibility of eventual space is to be found with horizontal field that is laminated, non-hierarchy and fluid. The space allows three-dimensional experience from two-dimension is to be formed and allows multi-level experiences by placing program. The natural boundary vertically formed between sky and water is controlled and the relationship of city landscape is horizontally to be intimated. The playground, observation platform, resting place provided inside of bridge will make various stories through natural and artificial experiences within the city and relationship with nature and human.

CONCEPT & PROCESS

Bridge for memory of City As a part of city, the interest towards bridge as a revealing tool that configures reappearance of memory and experiences is shaped through the relationship between geographical form and liquidity that canal has. These phenomenon’s are experienced as everyday life in the city and this is used as an important factor to make the formation of city the proposed bridge adopts configured pattern of city at visual level to transform and configure the experiences to 3-dimensional space. Memory and desire through the spatial experiences; and through this, the bridge realized the geographical, social and imaginative space that seeks for the possibility and relationship with society.

Bridge beyond Functional figure

Bridge as Landform

This proposal, as a truth of goal-oriented function based on the speed and direction as a vector, is to reject the bridge. New bridge reveals potential poetic meaning and ‘relationship Through the concept of ‘filed’. The logic of effciency0 focused and goal-oriented in the functionalism is excluded; and as a meaning of bridge, which is not for aesthetic values, the rich event of potential spatial experiences in the city is to be revealed. It recovers the sense of planeness through the represent of daily experiences of detouring, slowness, wandering and parking in the city. In other words, it focuses on the reconfiguration of bridge as a tool recovering potential poetic meaning and interrelationship.

The continuity of city is drawn and the interrelationship with city, nature and peoples to be made by shape of landform. This goes beyond the image of rupture that bridge has and has its’ meaning as a tool controlling the relationship to be created at the equipment maximizes the movement. The allness is recovered through the controls of bridge’s continuity and boundary and combination of relationship with surroundings. New network of topology is to be realized through reiteration, repeating, and distortion of land.

04 MEDIATOR Professional work· 2012 ·DND Architecture Type: Library International Architecture Competition

The proposed library represents the evolving of the library from its traditional role as “storage for knowledge” into a key moderator of information and a space for gatherings and encounters. It stimulates information used by expanding the notion of “the public” and extends the notion of “neighbor “by restructuring physical bounds. The site of the library, accessible from the street in all four directions, serves as a mediator by nature, rather than as a bordered space. Consequently, the mass of the building is multi-directional and its setback creates a layered structure which expands the area of the streets surrounding the building and the boundary of external spaces. Establishing terraces and canopies on the second and third floors expands the street area vertically into three-dimensional space. This new-concept library’s synchronicity in information provision can be understood within the idea of simultaneity, and its diachroneity in relation to “the public” and “neighbor” can be comprehended within the notion of temporality.
