Media Landscape as Borderless Urbanism

SOCIAL MEDIA LANSCAPE + PUBLIC SPACE PARADIGM Self - Initiative Project, July - October 2012 Se jin Jo

CAN A TYPE OF ARCHITECTURE BRING AND UNITE PREVIOUSLY DIVIDED PEOPLE ? New media landscape have allowed people to share, connect, gather together beyond time and places in 21st century. Also social media, a leader of new media landscape, has changed the way we think about our public spaces. Social media’s distictive characteristic is peopel started to react to the old media which used to give people one way direction of information in 20 th century. Even though people have had developed communicational technologies and tools, they can’t make people to create groups and communicate each other at the same time. Forexample, if the -ing groups and conversations spontaneously . And this characteristics has faciliated not only direct democracy movements in global world, but also transformation of open spaces regarding its uses and social programs. Acknowleging this revolutionary phenomenon, I would use this tool in architectural perspective and implicate in physical spaces, especially North and South Korea where cold war confrontation makes their media landscape inpenetrable each other.

composite satellite maps impossibly showing the whole world at night, the darkness broken by hubs and strings of artificial light and gave it the power of speech. For the riot of colours on these maps correspond to the diversity of languages spoken, or rather: typed, on Twitter. The explosive growth of microblogging service’s global popularity is emblematic of a trend affecting the entire internet: it’s becoming less American, and less Anglophone. The most recent numbers I could find, indicate a drop in US-based ‘unique users’ from 62% in June 2009 to just over 50% in January 2010. In relative terms, the world’s top tweeting nation are the Netherlands, with just over 22% of the Dutch online population using Twitter. The US, at 8%, is far behind Brazil (almost 22%), Venezuela (21%) and Indonesia (19%). So it’s a fair guess that a majority of the 200 million tweets generated every day are in languages other than English. What does this map tell us? First of all, like those world-at-night maps, it shows us where all the people are - at least those tweeting. Western Europe is lit up like a christmas tree - with the Netherlands glowing especially bright. Eastern Europe: not so much. Russia is a spider’s web of large cities connected through the darkness of the vast, empty countryside. In East Asia, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia stand out. India is much darker - but maybe that's because English, no longer majoritary but still dominant, is rendered in subdued grey. But the map most of all tells us which language people are twittering in. This is a fascinating way to compare official and actual language use. Quebec, for example, is an enormous French-speaking territory, almost triple the size of France itself . But those Canadians actually practising le tweet in French form a much smaller cluster, huddling around the St Lawrence in a couple of large hubs, with only a few francophone flecks further afield.

Article by Frank Jacobs

North and South Korea have been separated at the 38th parallel ever since the Korean War (1950-1953), which has never officially ended. In the ensuing ‘ceasefire’, North Korea developed into a communist dictatorship with a c entrally planned economy, while South Korea became a capitalist democracy with a free market economy. Economic hardship in the officially ‘self-reliant’ North has led to mass starvation, while the South has a vibrant economy able to compete with the best of the world. In 1996, the per capita GNP in the North was $920, while it was $11.270 in the South. A 1999 estimate of per capita GNPs put the South’s at 13 times that of the North. More recent figures will probably show an even wider gap. Due to the different economic results on either side of the Demilitarized Zone, the ethnically quite homogenous Koreans have even begun to diversify physically, with the average North Korean male almost 7 cm shorte r than his Southern counterpart (165,6 cm vs. 172,5 cm). North Korean females are on average 4 cm shorter than Southern women (154,9 cm vs. 159,1 cm). By 2025, the height difference is projected to increase to 11 cm for men, 6 cm for women. Unless the North’s economic situation changes drastically, that is. So the South dwarfs the North, not just numerically (50 vs. 27 million), but also economically and even size-wise. Another stark reminder of the different worlds both Koreas now inhabit,is this map, a picture of the night-time illumination on the Korean peninsula. The metropolitan area of Seoul, the South’s capital, holds 23 million people and is the second-largest conurbation onthe planet (after Tokyo). Its huge lit-up area, close to the border with the North, is clearly visible from space.Other Southern cities, while quite a lot smaller than Seoul, are also clearly distinguishable on this satellite map, for example Gunsan on the western coast, directly below it the inland city of Gwangju, the cities of Masan and Busan on he southern coast, and several other cities, much smaller still. By contrast (quite literally, even), the only speck of light north of DMZ is the North’s capital of Pyonyang, a single, neat pinprick of white punched through an otherwise completely black canvas. The minimal lighting belies thefact that Pyongyang is home to an estimated 3 million people. Gunsan, in the South, has under 300.000 inhabitants. There is only one bright side to this darkness that I can think of: North Korea must be a fantastic place for stargazing.

CREATING A PRODUCTIVE ECO-SYSTEM IN SLUM AREA Urban development pressure has spurred in Kumasi which is second biggest city in Ghana, Africa. The project site in Kumasi is located at a critical juncture where the country touches the town having social, financial, and ecological issues. This project would be the module whose practices could be applied on similar areas where complexity of economic and ecological system at stake To take that forward, we have indentified four major change land scape agents that would facilitate socio-economic growth within the site, and also create a ripple effect towards similar communities within the entire region. We would like to call these out as ecological agents, namely the 1) cash crops, 2) moringa, 3) kenaf 4) jute coping with community, city, urban and regional scales ASHANTI REGION IN GHANA

Urban sprawl and the city

Fragmented infrastructure

Regional Approach

Ecological Change Agents

The rapid urbanization and growth of Kumasi city due to heavy migration has lead to urban sprawl that is eating into the natural green belt zones all around the city and also within the city.

The investments for infrastructure being spent for the city, remains to be directly beneficial for the people and their surrounding natural environment.

The sprawl condition should be contained by densification of the urban core which needs to be done by more vertical growth.

We have identified four plant varieties that would help us prevent soil erosion, contamination of soil and water, and create economic empowerment. These agents would work for and in conjunction with the urbanization happening around the city. They will integrate high density housing by creating living and working opportunities, which could in turn provide for the larger industries and serve the local and regional markets.

Site edge and the green belt Our site shares its peripheral edge with a large natural reserve. This, along with its large migrant population that is overflowing onto the green belt, has resulted in poor environment conditions, which in turn affect public health. It has also destroyed the fertile agricultural land of Kumasi region.

Site Level Approach At the site level we should try to improve the land, water and people's living condition by improving their surroundings through the use of plants. This strategy will also strengthen the already prevalent farming culture. The green belt near the site would be used to further propagate the idea of urban farms on a larger scale thereby preventing the sprawl

“ Group Safety vs. Individual Freedom? ”

The future of public safety in New York City will be determined by the relationship of group safety and security on one hand, and the preservation of individual freedoms on the other. The experience of the public realm will be the directly shaped by both policing policy and safety design guidelines through the use of technology and physical interventions. Surveillance, mobility, and accessibility in the urban realm have already, and will become increasingly contested topics in the search for a mIddle ground.

Future public safety infrastructure

Three Hot Spots Design

As the city continues to combat the perception of NY as a dangerous place while dealing with more limited resources, is has chosen to rely on increasingly controversial tactics that induce profiling, and prioritize the safety of the group over the rights of the individual.

Our hypothesis is the redesign of existing public safety infrastructure for the future and it sould aid in repairing the relationship between policing and desenfranchised neighborhoods and citizens that is becoming increasingly distressed.

Taking a look at the resons for complaints, over 30% involved the NYPD’s controversial stop and frisk tactic.

To achieve this goal, the act of surveillance needs to become democratized. In order to do so, it must become transparent. In the future, surveillance in the public realm is citizen driven, both in terms of content and access.

We would like to choose three different hot spots with neighborhood scale ; 1) Currently, a lot of stop and frisks happen in East Harlem. And we’d like to choose a lexignton ave which could be the basic street of wifi zone in this area for the system. So, several screens are going to work in this residential area using vacant upper floors and bus stops. After setting up this system, we can expect the relationship between police and disenfranchised citizens would be changed to more democratized.

Existing condition_ Property crime and high surveillance zone by NYPD-stop & frisk, many cccameras. / Area connectivity_ 7th Ave wifi zone. / Main screens would be set up with large relationship of people in the transit hub and high foot trafficsector 3) 73rd precinct, Brownsville which is High violent crime area: Since most residents are African American sho are a particular race of the alleged victims in stop/frisk, this current condition between NYPDand neighbors corresponds to the high complaints Mother Gaston blvd./ Neighborhood scale, for indoor community, government apartment-use: Public green space; vacant upper floors

Public Safety | “Eyes on the Street

The culmination of the infrastructure is in the augmentation of an existing public space where videos are streamed in real time from both surveillance cameras and handheld phones, to be viewed by local police and members of the neighborhood simultaneously.

natural system system natural

The Bluebelt System in Staten Island is unique to this Borough, providing an opportunity for transformative Urban Design. We have specifically focused on New Creek, its wetlands and surrounding water-shed. This freshwater wetland, fed by spring water and surface run-off from surrounding development, is unique because it is one of few Palustrine Emergent Wetlands remaining in New York City. The existing neighborhood fabric is fragmented, describing a sharpedge between wetland and neighborhood, resulting in negligence and encroachment of natural systems. We are using the New Creek Bluebelt for more than stormwater management, through the design of an Urban Ecotone that benefits both the neighboring community and natural ecosystem. This solution will address public access, new policy, zoning, and building typology through the rethinking of New Creek’s Bluebelt boundary.
