VICTORY PLUS School Newsletter NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2017 Edition

National Teachers' Day Commemoration SVP Hosted a Training for Local Teachers

FOREWORD Dear Victorians,

Liam Hammer Academic Advisor

This is our last newsletter before the end of Semester. We have had a busy, but productive one with the opening of the new building and swimming pool, field trips, learning celebrations, workshops, conferences, competitions, PaLs and many PSG events too (Donor darah, parent sharing sessions, morning teas, religious prayers and Yoga) as we always do! The senior students have just completed a Summative Assessment week, the results of which and their reports are at the end of this week. Now that it is Mid-Year, this is a time to stop and reflect on how they are going as learners. Our teachers have already gone through this with their first observation lessons and goal setting process for appraisals, and even parents can take time and think about how are they working towards supporting the school and teachers in being “a caring and responsible community of lifelong learners, global citizens and entrepreneurs”. ? Are we role modeling to our children that we caring and responsible? (I have donated blood at a recent PSG Donor darah day) ? Are we role modeling that we are also lifelong learners ? (I have been studying at Harvard Graduate School of Education). ? Are we showing our students that we are global citizens ? (I have assisted the new Indonesian IB Schools Association with organising a leader’s conference). ? Are we showing our children that we can develop and train our entrepreneurial spirit ? (I have helped ANPS develop a new type of activity called ANPS Meets).

I am sure there are many different ways in doing all of this, but take some time over the holiday break to reflect on what we have done, and what more we can do.

WATER PLAY ACTIVITY

B

aby Gym students had water play activities in November, on Thursday 23rd and Saturday 25th. Water play activities are some of the most fun experiences for infants to help them handle their fear or the coldness of the water. Water play activity will help infants stay healthy and fresh, it also stimulates the motor skills and encourages the infants' independence and confidence. They filled a small bucket with colorful plastic balls and played hoops together. Even though some Baby Gym students were still scared, they were willing to try and got into our new pool at school and played in the water. They enjoyed the activity very much. 3

TODDLER WATER PLAY ACTIVITY

W

ater play is fun, yes it is! Children love water play because water can make them cheerful and happy. On Monday the 20th of November, Toddler students had a water play activity at the school's new small swimming pool. The aim of this activity was to make the students' fine and gross motor skills stronger and more stable. This activity can also build the child's confidence when they are in the water. Actually it was their first time to have a water play activity without their parents or nannies at school, however, most of them were excited to be in the water as they actively participated exploring the toys provided. The students were pretty busy also at that time. They collected and floated the balls on the water, splashed the water with their hands and their feet, explored the small water fountains, dipped their head in the water and of course were giggling and laughing. Well done Toddlers, we're sure that it was a great experience for you all. Let's have it again in the second semester. Cheers!!! 4

EY 2 EXCURSION “HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES” UNIT In the How We Organize Ourselves unit, EY 2 students are learning about the roles of people as part of the community. They explore different kinds of occupations, the role and responsibilities of each occupation and how they work together in the community. To support their understanding, each EY 2 class undertook an excursion to Rumah Iga Bakar and Kidzania.

The next destination was Kidzania. All EY 2 students could experience different kinds of occupations and make a contribution to the community. The students were divided into small groups to engage in various role-play activities. Some of them were: · Aviation Roles: Pilot, Cabin Crew Activity: Receive professional training on tasks that pilots and cabin crew members do before, during and after each flight. · Beauty Salon Roles: Applying make-up, hairstyling and painting nails Activity: Give clients the coolest look, hairstyle and manicure. · Driving School Role: Student Driver Activity: Learn traffic regulations and vehicle operations. · Fire Station Role: Firefighter Activity: Join Kidzania's Fire Brigade to put out fires in the city. · Hospital: Baby Care Training Center Role: Health Care Worker Activity: Practice the basics of baby care. · Pharmacy Role: Pharmacist Activity: Prepare special medicine. Both locations turned out to be fun and very fruitful visits. In the end, we do hope our students will understand better. Benjamin Franklin once said “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I learn.” In EY 2, we aim to involve our children in their learning. 5

he first visit was Rumah Iga Bakar restaurant. Here the students learned about different roles and responsibilities of people in the restaurant and how it is organized. They met the owner of the restaurant, the chef, the waiters and waitresses, and the cashier. The students got a warm welcome from the owner of the restaurant. They also had the chance to choose food from the menu and place an order with the waiter or waitress. After their meal, they paid for the food by themselves at the cashier. Our students did not only learn to order and pay for food, the students also learned about teamwork. This included learning to help others, getting along with and appreciating others.

The Commemoration of National Teachers' Day

Training for Local Teachers “Your life as a teacher begins the day you realize that you are always a learner” Robert John Meehan

Aligning with the SVP school vision as a community of lifelong learners, ECE commemorated National Teachers' Day by conducting a free professional development session for kindergarten and pre-school teachers in Kecamatan Rawalumbu under the organization of IGTKI (Ikatan Guru Taman Kanakkanak Indonesia) and HIMPAUDI (Perhimpunan Pendidik dan Tenaga Kependidikan Anak Usia Dini). The session was held on 27th November 2017 in Pandawa Hall and facilitated by Ibu Early, Ibu Aini (PYP Coordinators) and Ibu Maria (ECE Principal). We invited 50 teachers to learn about

“Differentiation and Assessment Tools in Early Childhood Education”. The concept of differentiated learning has been identified as supporting students with differing learning needs, interests, abilities and levels of “readiness”. It refers to the strategies and pedagogical approaches teachers use to respond to students' differences. Differentiated learning is broken down into four key components. These are content differentiation, process differentiation, product differentiation and environment differentiation (Carol Ann Tomlinson). The facilitators shared the importance of differentiation in order to answer the challenge in current educational practices regarding the inequality of educational outcomes. The participants learned the best practices in differentiation that have been

6

applied in ECE, SVP. As part of catering for differentiation, they also learned about authentic assessment and how to design assessment tools such as rubrics, checklists and portfolios. The participants gave very positive feedback about this session. They really appreciated that SVP invited them to learn and they benefited from this session. Hopefully, the insights they received from this session will support the teaching and learning in their schools and improve the quality of education in our community. written by Ibu Maria Bhekti Utari, ECE Principal

ECE Parents' Book Club Written by Ibu Maria Bhekti Utari, ECE Principal

ooks are a crucial part of childhood development. Children at any age will appreciate being read to and will also benefit from the reading. Nurturing positive reading habits in young children helps make them readers for life. The best way to motivate and to nurture the love of reading for the young children is by giving them an example through the adults who surround them, be it their teachers, parents or other family members. ECE has been encouraging the reading habit through storytelling sessions by the parents in the

classes. In order to promote this activity and as the continuation of ECE Literacy Month, we started a Book Club for ECE parents. It is a Book Club particularly established for the parents to learn and practice reading stories for the children so they could become more confident to volunteer for telling stories in the classes. The first ECE Parents Book Club was done on 8th November 2017 in Sadewa Room. We invited all ECE parents including the listed volunteer parents from all classes. The session was facilitated by Ibu Maria (ECE Principal), Ibu Early

7

(PYP Curriculum Coordiator) and Ibu Lya (ECE Vice Principal). It started with a sharing session about the importance of storytelling to young children, the techniques in telling a story, choosing ageappropriate books as well as the strategies to engage children. There was also a simulation time for the parents to practice their skills in reading books in small groups. It was great to see their enthusiasm and their efforts to make reading books as interesting as they could. Looking forward to seeing more parents in the next Book Club session.

This year, as part of our Extra Curricular Activities, students learned different kind of dances: modern dance, traditional dance, and ballet. It was now the turn for some of our modern dancers and ballerinas to show their talent.

Kahlil Gibran once said “... next to hunger and thirst, our most basic human need is for storytelling. I couldn't agree more with him. As a child stories always fascinated me. As a grown up, they help me stay grounded yet feel powerful about humanity. Through story we can feed our inner heroic soul and cope with our villain self. On Sunday, November 5, 2017, I, Bu Maria and Bu Rini, joined a storytelling workshop with Tanya Batt at Perpustakaan Nasional Indonesia. Wearing a radiant red bolero, a flaring floral dress and a flashing headdress, Tanya is someone you will definitely notice when walking on the street. Knowing her, I envy how she makes money by sharing some magic and spreading happiness throughout the world. In her class, I learned how stories not only can be told but also can be

massaged. I have never had such rich, sensorial experiences through stories. Tanya sings, dances, makes silly voices, does some magic tricks, and surprises us with her story sack. She speaks fast, slow, loud, soft. It is like listening to 100 Disney characters in a single person. It was a wonderful experience and reminds me how special a child's world is. The class itself took more than 2 hours but it felt like only 30 minutes since I was so captivated. I was craving for more. Besides that, Bu Sheila and Bu Lya also joined Prop Magic class with Kiran Shah from Singapore where they learned to make good use of any simply available materials for props. There was also an indie Indonesian story book selling too and special story shows on the main stage and in the mini theatre too. I highly recommend you and your loved ones spend your weekend in Festival Dongeng Internasional Indonesia next year. 9

We got an invitation from ICAS Indonesia - UTC to perform on 25th November during the ICAS Medal Presentation Ceremony 2017. SVP sent the “Amazing Crew” who performed their dance. They are Iqo Pratita, Kinesia Kharistya Hemas, Nur Meina Indah Ginting, Gavriella Jadelin (Vella) and Michaella Valerie Giroth. The students got the chance to perform at the closing of the ICAS Ceremony. They were really amazing and able to show their best performance during this event. They showed courageous, communicator and balanced profiles as IB students. This is the first time SVP Primary School received such an invitation and this made us really excited to show them our best and make sure people know that “We Are Victorians”. Will we get another performance invitation next year? Just anytime. We are ready. 10

ICAS Medal Presentation Ceremony 2017 ICAS is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement. ICAS is unique, being the most comprehensive generally available suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary school students. The assessments comprise eight Digital Technologies tests, eleven English tests, eleven Maths tests, eleven Science tests, six Spelling tests and ten Writing tests. This year we joined Science, English and Maths. The students have practiced with their teachers to prepare for the competition since semester 2 last school year. Their efforts have paid off. This year we had more winners than last year. They are:

And to celebrate their achievements, they were invited to attend the ICAS Medal Presentation ceremony on Saturday, 25th November 2017. It was a glorious moment for our students to have their names on a big screen and to be announced by the MC in front of so many people from government and schools around Indonesia. We truly hope next year, more students will have their moments too in the ICAS Medal Presentation ceremony. Never stop trying and giving your best, my students. Photography Workshop in Nature Grade 5 Excursion to Kebun Taman Sari written by Ibu Elma Theresia, Grade 5 Homeroom Teacher

To support the learning process in UOI 3: How We Express Ourselves , last Tuesday, 21st November 2017, Grade 5 students of Sekolah Victory Plus Bekasi had a photography workshop. This worshop was to learn more details about the purposes of photography , how to capture images and interpreting messages in photography. It was held in Kebun Taman Sari, Kecamatan Setu, Kabupaten Bekasi. There were 48 students from 3 classes who joined the workshop . They were accompanied by 5 Homeroom Teachers and a PYP Coordinator; Ibu Early. We began our activities with a short briefing in each class. After, we gathered in the foyer and at exactly 8 o'clock we set off to the destination in Setu in 3 school coaches. There was no heavy traffic during our journey so after approximately less than one hour, we arrived. We were welcomed by the friendly staff with smiles, some ginger drinks, sweet sandwiches and traditional snacks called jadah tempe (gloutious rice covered with tempe bacem). After enjoying some refreshments and the scenery around the area, students were led into a wooden traditional Javanese house to listen to the expert's presentation. The expert for this workshop was Mr.

Gunawan Wicaksono or we may call him Om Gunce; a senior journalist and photographer from a popular magazine called Tempo magazine. He then explained the techniques of good photography such as the levels in capturing object , how to take pictures of moving objects, types of camera, etc. He also gave the students motivation by telling them about being a worldclass photographer by winning an international photography campionship. It took an hour to enjoy listening to his knowledge about theories of photography before students were guided by Om Gunce and some staffs to practice taking their own photos. It was hilarious and fun to get the objects photographed . After spending almost an hour outdoor, students had lunch with simple menus of fried chicken, soup, sambal, fried noodles and rice. The desserts included ripe rambutans from the rambutan trees around the area. Full with delicious food , the students played the traditional games provided and playing with the tame pigeons . And at 1:30, we returned to school. What a meaningful and engaging learning experience ! 13

GRADE 1 LEARNING CELEBRATION Written by Ibu Maya Sukesi, Grade 1 Fatmawati Homeroom Teacher

O n We d n e s d a y, l s t November 2017, Grade 1 students celebrated their learning. During the Unit of Inquiry: “How the World Works” students learned that “The management of waste supports the sustainability of the environment”. In this event, the students showed the process of their understanding of the Unit of Inquiry. The students did their opening performance by singing and dancing through the collaboration of Mandarin and Music lessons. They sang the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” song. After that, the students presented their recycled art work that they

had made (with the purpose of reducing waste) to other parents. Each student explained their art to 3 parents at least. They explained the recycled art work they had made, the materials, the reasons they chose the materials and explained the amount of the waste nowadays. Students and parents were so enthusiastic at the learning celebration. In the end, the parents were assigned to give feedback and reflection about the children's presentation, performance and the event itself.

RELIGIOUS CAMP 2017 The theme for Religious Camp 2017 was: 'You CHAMPION never gives up!

Raise Me Up', focusing on how a true Lita, who highlighted to students that they should always try their best and never give up. She reminded us that it is important for all of us to strengthen our faith so that we have a strong foundation to help us be risk-takers in life. Students played a fun game of 'Catch as you Can' and heard the story of “The Most Magnificent Thing!”. The opening ended with students reading out the quote together:

167 students from Grades 4, 5 & 6 took part in the camp on 3rd & 4th November and spent a night camping out in school. Students were excited to get to their rooms and find out who their roommates and chaperones would be throughout the camp. Once everyone was unpacked it was time to head to Amarta Hall. The event was opened by our Primary School Principal, Ibu

“A champion is someone who gets up, even when he can't.”

Challenge. It was a real opportunity to reinforce the theme of this year's Religious Camp – 'You Raise Me Up' as teams had to work together to build the tallest freestanding tower they could. Towers fell, mistakes were made, lessons were learnt and much fun was had. We all learned the importance of having a solid foundation of faith to build our lives on and how it is important to never give up.

Students then headed off to their respective religious groups to begin the first session, followed by a yummy dinner together with everyone in the cafeteria. It was then time for the second session, followed by snack time before students were given a brand new session this year, working in their sleep room teams. All students participated in the Spaghetti and Marshmallow Tower 16

Grade 6 LEARNING CELEBRATION How the World Works In the second unit of inquiry, How the World Works, Grade 6 students were assigned to create a compound simple machine product as their Summative Assessment. This project also played as their Diknas Ujian Praktek. They were expected to come up with two or more simple machines involved in the product. The products they created were also expected to be well-functioned and help our daily life. In making the products, the students were helped by their parents. By the end of the unit, all the products were exhibited in the Learning Celebration in Amarta Hall which was held on Thursday, 16 November 2017. It was a fascinating learning experience for the students as they could show the connection between their knowledge, skills, and real-life implementation. w r i t t e n b y Ibu Rosmala Sembiring, Grade 6 Homeroom Teacher

pproaching early November 2017, the excitement built for the SVP student representatives, who were to attend the Model United Nations (MUN) conference run by the University of Indonesia (UI) MUN club, arguably the country's most prestigious MUN club. This five day conference was from Thursday 9 November until Monday 13 November. SVP's delegates of Stephanie, Elysia, Nadia, Atala, Schalke and Nadya attended the Netherlands' Embassy (Erasmus Huis) in Kuningan for the opening event on day one. However, two of Indonesia's leading universities became the location for conference delegates to research, network, debate and explore MUN resolutions about the conference theme of promoting sustainable Indonesia. UI's Depok campus welcomed delegates for days two until four, while the final day was at the Indonesian Defense University in Sentul. At least five hundred delegates from senior high schools and universities from Indonesia, Vietnam, Nepal, India, the Philippines, Germany, China, South Korea and Taiwan. SVP delegates joined the ARF (ASEAN Regional Forum) and the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) alongside high schools including Mentari Intercultural School, Sekolah Lentera Indonesia, Santa Laurensia School, Xavier School, SMAN 3, Sekolah Perkumpulan Mandiri, Binus School Simprug, schools from Medan and Pekanbaru as well as prestigious universities of Binus, University of Indonesia, Universitas Pelita Harapan, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Parahyangan, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia Defense University, and many more. Atala concluded that “IMUN 2017 was a truly astounding experience, this conference provides us with a platform to voice our opinions in relation to the given topic “. The five day conference and multiple locations meant that MUN was a tiring yet memorable experience. Nadia realised that it was great to “meet all these amazing and talented people who I learnt a lot from, and also build new friendships”. Elysia recalled that being in the ARF room with almost fifty very ambitious older delegates “is a very intimidating impression, yet it is “a matter of polishing your public speaking, your social skills and brainstorming a myriad of possible solutions to resolve the most pressing challenges across the world.” Stephanie summarised that the IMUN is an opportunity to “sharpen personal skills and even discover hidden talents like public speaking, negotiating and critical thinking”, adding “remember the things that lasts the most are the memories you made and the connections you build throughout your journey.” All the students and myself are indebted to the support and guidance of Bu Hesti, Bu Andhini, Bu Budi, Bu Wini, Bu Desi and the drivers to ensure the pre event and events arrangements were so smoothly organised.

TOURNAMENT

OF CHAMPIONS World Scholars Cup

written by Bapak Hendriadi Yasir Secondary School Principal

On 11th – 14th November 2017, 12 SVP students joined the Tournament of Champion event, held by the World Scholar Cup organization. This tournament is the last leg of the World Scholar Cup series, which moves from regional to global rounds in the same year. The event took place at Yale University, New Haven – USA and has been held here annually since 2013.

the students enjoyed every second of it, as the event provided not only the chance for them to compete and show off their abilities in debating, writing and general knowledge, but also gave them opportunities to build friendships, collaborate and network with other students from many different nationalities. The tournament's theme, “Unlikely World” provided a range of interesting topics that included Greek mythology and conspiracy theories which became the core content of the event. However, the competition was actually more than that, as participants were continually exercising their learning, communication and critical thinking skills in order to perform their best. On top of that, they also naturally and organically learnt about other cultures through their interactions with students

This year, there were around 2000 students participating from 50 countries. Almost half of the students participating were in the Junior division (Grade 6 to 10 students) and the remaining were in the Senior division (grade 11 and above). This was by far their largest tournament in terms of numbers of participants. It was a nerve wracking and challenging competition, but 21

We thank everyone who was involved both directly and indirectly in this event. From parents who never stopped giving their support, to the family of Aunt Bernie and Uncle Noah who helped the students adjust to the freezing climate and showed the students some interesting places in Philadelphia, Washington DC and New York, to the teachers: Ibu Fenty, Mr. Skea and Pak Rikko who tirelessly helped to train students virtually day and night. But, indeed, it is the students who make it all possible and we certainly hope this event will help them become better people with better futures.

from the many participating countries. These interactions included a cultural night event, Scavenger hunt and the Scholar’s Ball. The combination of this scholarly events and fun activities makes this event hugely popular worldwide and certainly at SVP. After three years of participation, SVP continued to show their best. This year, on top of winning many medals from many different categories, one of the students, Andrea, won a trophy for being the 2nd best in the individual writing competition category. This is an exceptional achievement, especially considering she had to compete against over 1000 other talented and hardworking students.

We believe that education is not literally separated into primary and secondary level. The classrooms might be separated, the uniform might be different, the learning approach might be changing, but it is a continuum of learning. SVP as the only IB Continuum school in Bekasi, implementing a continuum curriculum from PYP (Primary Years Programme), through MYP (Middle Years Program) and culminating in the DP (Diploma Programme) curriculum. In order to enrich Grade 6 students' understanding of the next chapter in their IB continuum journey, they were invited to participate in the, “One Day in Secondary collaboration between the secondary and primary schools. Held on the 1st of November 2017, all the Grade 6 students had the opportunity to sit as Grade 7 students and experience several learning activities in Science, Individuals and Society, and Design. In Science they learnt how to conduct a lab investigation, while in Design class, they learnt about the design cycle through a hands on activity where they were required to design shoes in order to fulfill a client's needs. Finally, in Individual and Society class, they practised research skills that they will need in their future learning. The students participated in all activities very enthusiastically, and they seem excited to be entering the secondary school in the next academic year.

Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.

SECONDARY SCHOOL

MINI TOURNAMENT 2017

The tournament participants came from 12 schools, from Greater Jakarta or Jabodetabek. On the first day of the tournament, we started with middle school basketball and futsal matches. Each day, we held 3 basketball and 3 futsal games, using a round robin system to ensure we got the result on the same day. With good preparation, the Sekolah Victory Plus futsal team was ready to compete with Sekolah Bistek and Highfield Secondary School The matches were exciting, but the outcome was not good. SVP was defeated by Bistek and Highfield schools. However, this was a good chance for us to show that being a CHAMPION means being graceful in defeat. Basketball and futsal matches lasted for 5 days, and the results are as follows: Tournament Futsal Middle School Level : 1. SMP Al-Azhar 2. Global Achievement School 3. SMP Marsudirini. Futsal High school level : 1. SMA Yatindo 2. SMA Bistek 3. SMA 3 Tamsel. In basketball, Sekolah Victory Plus managed to get some glorious result: 1st Place to boys basketball middle school, 1st Place to girls basketball high school, and 2nd to place boys basketball high school. Being a CHAMPION also means being humble in winning. The results are quite good as a beginner in the swimming competition, some of students of Sekolah Victory Plus received medals in this competition, the students were Axel 3rd place 50 meters breaststroke and Fiorina 3rd place 50 meters freestyle. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to the parties who supported the SVP Secondary Tournament 2017! since 2014 - present Teaching Subject

Music for Secondary School NEVER STOP LEARNING As a professional musician Pak Chrys has actively performed in many symphony orchestras for more than 15 years. He became a full-time music teacher for SVP Secondary Students in 2014. Apart from his main task in delivering lessons of music theory, composition, and ensemble, he is also acting as the violin teacher, music director and orchestra conductor. He recently joined the IB Workshop Regional Asia Pacific, the three-day workshop focused on the Music Diploma course and its assessment. We asked Pak Chrys several questions related to his experience in the workshop accordingly What event did you attend and who organized it? The event was the IB Diploma Programme (DP) Music Course and was organized by IB Regional Asia – Pacific. The workshop focused on preparing music teachers for teaching and assessing the Music curriculum. Since the beginning of the implementation of DP programme this year, SVP's leadership have now turned their attention to including Music as part of its diploma offering in the 2018-2019 academic year. We are confident that the addition of Music will draw many prospective students, particularly those who wish to continue their tertiary education abroad. When and Where was the event? The workshop was held from 8th to 10th September 2017 at School Of The Arts (SOTA), Singapore. SOTA's primary subject is Art. With a giant impressive building, it is supported by many international standard artistic facilities such as an auditorium, recital halls, concert hall, recording studio, design studio, dance room, theatre, film centre, fine arts workshop, and of course classrooms that we used for the workshop itself. It was a perfect environment for us, art teachers, to get inspired, to share ideas and to gain more knowledge. Who was the audience? Approximately 167 participants from 22 different countries around the 34

Ratot

world attended this workshop. They were mostly educators who are teaching either visual arts, dance, film, music, or theatre in the regions of Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. Interestingly many teachers in this region are British, Scottish, Australian, Canadian, American, Italian or Dutch. The opening guest speaker was German virtuosa, Dr. Thomas Markus Manhart and our main speaker was the Russian pedagogue, Marina Babaeva. I was proud that I was the only Indonesian teacher at the event. Could you tell us your unforgettable moment in the workshop? The most unforgettable moment was when we were divided into recap groups. The recap session had to be presented the next morning so we had to decide what kind of simulation we would do in front of the classroom by recollecting what we had learned in the previous session. We interestingly found a food corner to eat and discuss, and thanks to my suggestion we decided to sing an old song – I Want To Know What Love Is (by Foreigner). We changed the original lyrics by replacing them with the workshop concepts and keywords. In the morning we performed a capella, which apparently succeeded, and made all people in the classroom laughed out loud. Since I was the youngest participant I also shared information about a user-friendly composition software – MuseScore. Once we downloaded and installed it to our laptops, we tried to compose an orchestration structure. Being gathered with other music teachers from around the world made us realize that everyone one of us is stronger in certain areas, but also weaker in other areas. One is brilliant with jazz, orchestra, or singing opera, but struggles in Electronic Digital Media, composition, or world culture music. No need to be worried. We could always learn something new from each other and enrich one to another. In the end I invited them to join a Facebook group of music teachers that should be very useful for online sharing and discussion. That is because we, IB educators, will never stop learning.

Our Cooking Class An Easy Cooking for Your Special Occasion

F

or our parents' activity event this semester, we chose cooking class with “Eazy Cooking for Your Special Occasion” as a theme, so we hoped every participant can make a special dish at their home. Surprise surprise.., we've had a tremendous response. The registration was fully booked in just a couple of hours. We offered 42 seats but waiting lists filled so quickly so we decided to open another class the next day. So the Parents Activity team arranged two days in a row event on 15th and 16th November 2017 with total participants around 75 parents and divided as 25 groups. Wow...! And the D-day came. We had Chef Rio from The Burger Brothers to teach us how to cook the dishes and gave us some tips and tricks. Burger Brothers is located at Kemang Pratama and they have delicious burgers to try. Before Burger Brothers, Chef Rio also has a few restaurants in Bali and took his study at New York restaurant school. At this collaboration, Chef Rio taught the participants how to make a Chicken Mozzarella Stick as an appetizer or we can also make it for a kid snack at home. Second dish was Crispy

Skin Salmon along with creamy mashed potato and ratatouille or we used to know it as sauté vegetables. And the last is 5 minutes Chocolate Mug Cake as a dessert. Yes, 5 minutes only. We will share the recipe at the end of this article.

Recipe 5 Minutes Chocolate Mug Cake Ingredients: 1. ¼ cup tepung 2. ¼ cup gula pasir 3. 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 4. ½ tsp baking powder 5. Pinch of salt 6. ½ tsp vanilla 7. 3 tbsp melted butter 8. 3 tbsp whole milk 9. 1 egg 10. 1 tbsp choco chips 11. 28-30 gr semi sweet chocolate 12. 1 tbsp water

The PSG community also gave many gifts to participants as always. We chose 'the best dishes group' based on the meal appearance and the plating. We also have 'the best team-work' and 6 door prizes. Thank you to Burger Brothers and Rumah Iga Bakar for the vouchers to supports this event. Congratulations to the winners!

How to make: 1. Combine no.1-6 and whisk until well combined in 1 bowl 2. Combine no.7-8 and whisk until well combined in another bowl 3. Mix ingredients no.1 and 2, whisk it well 4. Add choco chips, whisk 5. Put the dough in a mug 6. Put semi sweet chocolate in the middle (don't push it) 7. Add 1 tbsp water 8. Put it in a 400 watt microwave and set for 1,5minutes. (The duration depends on your microwave/oven. We suggest to continually check it on your mug for the first time baking for the perfect result. It has to be melting on the top and all around the cake. If it happened to be like bolu/brownies, means that it's over cooked). 9. Don't forget to put some vanilla ice cream at the top and the yummy chocolate cake is ready to serve. Enjoy!

The event was so much fun. Thank you, parents for your participation, a very responsive Parents' Activity and their support team, and also a very supportive SVP team. So, shall we do this again on next academic year? See you all in our next event. Happy cooking..! by Dyah Layung Sekar (Ay) For Parents' Activity Commission
