Mai Tatro By Selbe Dittman
Mai Tatro, 17, of Port Orange, Florida may be taking the world by storm sooner than we know. She describes her music style as “not able to fit in one box.” As an acoustic artist, when Tatro writes her music, it could go in any direction. “When I’m performing live, you’re going to get ‘a girl and her guitar.’ But when I get in the studio with a producer, I lean more towards an alternative genre,” says Tatro. Tatro learned her musical skills from her grandfather when she was five. Since then she has learned how to play the guitar, piano, violin and ukulele. Additionally, Tatro just had the opportunity to audition for Amer- ica’s Got Talent in Jacksonville and will hear back from the producers sometime soon. “At the beginning of the day, I wasn’t so nervous. But by the time I had to get in front of the producers, I was. I had been to the auditions in Orlando previous- ly, so I kind of knew what to expect.” Like most artists, performing is Tatro’s way of expressing herself and connecting with other people through her music. Having performed around Florida in Daytona Beach, Maitland, and our own St. Augustine, Florida, Tatro has gained a lot of performing experience for her age. In addition to performing and writing her own music, Tatro works with Kid’s Rock the Nation, an organization that helps build
kids self-esteem by providing them with a guitar and guitar lessons; and also by helping raise awareness of the charity, attending open mic nights, and gifting instruments when they can. She sees working with Kids Rock the Nation as giving back to the organization that helped her get where she is today. Tatro wants to continue writing music and exploring with her creativity in the future. She loves performing live because it gives her an opportunity to introduce people to her style of music and connect with them. “Performing is a way people can hear my music, but I’m not looking for fame. I’m planning on continuing music as my career, whether I’m a small coffeehouse performer or playing on big stages in front of tons of people.” Make sure to check out Mai’s music live on March 24th at Sarbez for Narrow Magazine’s monthly Showcase as well as her singles on MaiTatroMusic. com. Her EP is scheduled to release sometime this year and her single “In a Box” is out on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play.
