Letter from the president of the Peruvian Football Federation
WE ARE BACK The day has come, the world football party has started and today Peru is back.
In the last three years, our team moved up 44 positions in the FIFA ranking, managing to advance from position 54th to 10th, a historical fact and never achieved before. This is the evidence of a responsible and transparent management with a long-term vision, which has allowed the Federaciรณn Peruana de Futbol (FPF for its acronym in Spanish) to have high aspirations, always with their feet on the court. Hand in hand with qualified professionals, we are writing a new history of Peruvian football, recovering the confidence of the fans and returning the illusion to more than thirty million Peruvians. We are convinced that football is an engine of change generating positive impacts on society. Thirty-six years have passed since our last participation in a World Cup, three generations had not experienced the excitement of qualifying. Peru has lived through football in recent months: in every match we have seen children, youth and adults wearing the Peruvian team shirt with pride in their schools, in their jobs, everywhere. Being at 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia has become a milestone in the history of Peruvian football, our new starting point. I want to recognize each one of those who are part of the FPF, the national team players that participated in the qualifying process, coach Ricardo Gareca and his technical team for the conviction, discipline, effort and professionalism shown in each match. Thank you for returning to Peru the joy through football. Being here is only the first step of a future plan for our national team and our institution to achieve an international position as one of the best in the world. We have made a firm promise to continue working hand in hand with clubs in the legacy, to be always present. We are #PreparadosParaTodo (ready for everything).

THE STRATEGY FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF PERUVIAN FOOTBALL The FPF is on its way to its centenary and one of the objectives we have set is to turn it into a modern, dynamic, transparent and professional organization that is at the level of the great institutions of the sports world.
T
his motivated us to design a comprehensive strategy for the transformation of Peruvian football with short, medium and long-term plans and objectives. The qualifying to World Cups will be a consequence of this strategic plan applied in every corner of the country. Our vision is to turn football into an engine of social and sports change. There are four strategic football pillars that are key to our management: the reform of clubs and tournaments, infrastructure and strengthening our positioning.

2 Sport requires discipline, order, transparency and professional management. Ensuring the continuity of professional football in the country requires the institutionalization and professionalization of Peruvian clubs, as well as the optimization of tournaments and championships. The crises of recent years has taught us a lesson: without order, transparency and discipline the objective cannot be achieved.
We are pioneers in the region in adopting the ÎÎ FIFA Licensing System, which allows to ensure
transparent and efficient administrations, trained professionals in their functions, adequate facilities for training and competitions; and especially youth divisions in clubs, the source of talent, renewal and passion to make football grow.
ÎÎ
Licensing 100% of professional clubs is a clear evidence that we are on the right track.
The experience in this process has led us to ÎÎ share what we have learned with the federations of Argentina, Ecuador and Chile.
To date, we have published seven hundred ÎÎ and fifty specialized technical reports and two hundred and fifty resolutions.
The challenge is to get clubs to multiply ÎÎ their generation of resources and invest in development and growth.

3 We are investing in the current infrastructure ÎÎ and in the construction of the Center of National Football Teams. Thanks to the agreement signed with the Archbishopric of Lima, this site will have more than 114,000 m2, and will have six regulatory football fields for all categories.
We have signed the Inter-institutional ÎÎ Cooperation Agreement, for a period of three
years, with the Ministry of Education (MINEDU for its acronym in Spanish) and the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD for its acronym in Spanish) for the creation of infrastructure, through lands owned by IPD, and high performance centers specifically dedicated to football, under the modality of “works for taxes.”
The talent is all over the country, but to continue developing in sports, an appropriate infrastructure is required. It is essential to improve the playing fields, stadiums and facilities. We promote a self-sustainable management model, through strategic alliances with regional governments, public and private entities, in order to recover spaces for sport at national level. Our goal is to consolidate twenty-six regional development centers.

IN THE WORLD CUPS The FIFA World Cup represents the largest and most prestigious international football competition in the world, and the one-discipline sporting event generating the highest expectations on five continents.
I
t is celebrated every four years, in different elected venues, so it raises, one cycle after another, the illusions of the countries that participate in the different qualifying processes. Everyone wants to go to the World Cup and, of course, win it. The story of the Peruvian football team in this event has also been the story of a whole country’s illusions about sports. The participation of Peru in the World Cup has had two marked periods. Initially, with the inauguration and the first organization of the event, in 1930, which had the support of the FPF and its South American counterparts to carry out a project that would make history. Therefore, our first participation was given as an invitation. As the World Cup was gaining prestige and greater supporters, and the practice of football was becoming worldwide, it was decided to fully participate in the qualifying rounds. But it would not be until 1970 when we would qualify in a World Cup, by our own merit, to start a second period, the one considered “golden age” of Peruvian football. Where we would qualify for in four World Cups. This generation was also able to win the 1975 Copa América, the highest international football team competition in our region.
In the following pages we will give a brief review about the participation of Peru in its first three World Cups. A history marked by great contrasts, especially when the role of our national team has never gone unnoticed in the World Cup.
URUGUAY 1930: The first participation of Peru in the World Cup took place at the inaugural event. The dream of Jules Rimet, the FIFA president, to unite all the teams of the world in a single event was becoming tangible in South America. Uruguay had the privilege of being the first country to host the World Cup. The FPF began preparations for our delegation. Forty-five days before the trip to the World Cup, the Spanish coach Francisco Bru Sanz was hired. The official players for the team were Juan Valdivieso, Jorge Pardón, Alberto Soria, Mario de las Casas, Antonio Maquilón, Domingo García, Eduardo Astengo, Julio Quintana, Jorge Koochoi Sarmiento, Alejandro Villanueva, Demetrio Neira, Julio Lores, Pablo Pacheco, Alberto Denegri, Plácido Galindo, José María Lavalle, Lisandro Nué, Carlos Cillóniz, Arturo Fernández and Luis Souza Ferreyra. All of them boarded on the Orcoma ship bound for Santiago de Chile, the first stop to arrive to Uruguay.

the Uruguayan Alvaro Gestido, with handkerchief in hand, as if it were a marinera, a representative dance from our country.
MEXICO 1970: Since the mid-twentieth century, the World Cup had already become a highly prestigious event, attracting a great mass of football fans. Although Peru had some brilliant generations, they could not qualify to the World Cup since it decided to participate in its first qualifying rounds, specifically for the 1958 World Cup Sweden. We had to wait until the 1970 World Cup Mexico, when we won for the first time the right to participate in the event. Qualifying to the World Cup was a historic milestone, when we beat Argentina in La Bombonera Stadium.
National team that played as guest in the first Football World Cup. Uruguay 30. In the draw, Peru was chosen to participate in group 3 along with Romania and the host, Uruguay. Already in Montevideo, on July 14th, 1930, eleven Peruvians were ready to play their first match in the World Cup against Romania. The Peruvian team took to the field of the legendary Pocitos Stadium with Valdivieso, De las Casas, Soria, García, Galindo, Denegri, Lavalle, Lores, Villanueva, Neyra y Souza. The Romanian Desu scored the first goal of the match. In the minute 20th, Souza scored the equalizer, the first Peruvian goal in the World Cup. And in the following minutes Stanciu and Kovaci would score, the Romanians winning 3-1. From there, what most worried the Peruvians was to know if their second match, against Uruguay, would go to play in the new Centenario Stadium. The rains
poured in Montevideo and there was doubt if the grass of the new stadium could be ready. Until the expected day arrived and it was ready. The match between Peruvians and Uruguayans would be the first to be played in this historic stadium. That day, Peru was on the field with Valdivieso, De las Casas, Soria, García, Galindo, Denegri, Lavalle, Lores, Villanueva, Neyra and Souza. Much has been written about Uruguay-Peru on July 18th, 1930. The match was won by Uruguayans 1-0 with goal from “Manco” Castro scored at minute 17 th of the second half and would close our participation in the First World Cup. The local chronicles celebrated the Uruguayan qualification to the next round, but in the Peruvian imagination was a milestone for the memory: the dance that José Maria Lavalle did to
Forty years have passed for Peru to return to a World Cup. The coach was the Brazilian Waldir Pereyra “Didí,” and was in charge of a brilliant generation of footballers. Didí called up Luis Rubiños, Rubén Correa, Jesús Goyzueta, Eloy Campos, Orlando De La Torre, Héctor Chumpitaz, Nicolás Fuentes, Pedro Gonzales, José Fernández, Javier Gonzales, Félix Salinas, Ramón Mifflin, Roberto Challe, Julio Baylón, Luis Cruzado, Eladio Reyes, Pedro León, Teófilo Cubillas, Alberto Gallardo, José Del Castillo, Hugo Sotil and Oswaldo Ramírez. They belonged to a generation formed in school sport enclosures [the famous “canchitas” (little courts)] and also in local neighborhoods. Unfortunately, two days before Peru’s return to the World Cup, on May 31st, 1970, the earth trembled in the center and north of the country. An earthquake of 7.9 MW left the balance of 70,000 dead. Peruvians were stricken by the tragedy. The World Cup would be a way to cheer up a devastated country.

Peru was drawn to participate in group 4, along with Federal Germany, Bulgaria and Morocco. The opening was scheduled for June 2nd , at five in the afternoon, in the city of Leon, and our first rival would be Bulgaria. The team that started were Rubiños, Campos, De la Torre, Chumpitaz, Fuentes, Challe, Mifflin, Baylón, León, Cubillas and Gallardo. At minute 12th Bulgaria scored 1-0 with Dermedjiev’s goal. For the start of the second half, Hugo Sotil entered to replace Baylon. However, Bonev put the 2-0 in the minute 5th for the Europeans. Everything seemed lost, but the national team recovered. In minute 6th, Alberto Gallardo put the 2-1; and in minute 11th, Héctor Chumpitaz scored the free kick. Nobody could believe it. In minute 28th, the best would come. After receiving a pass from Challe, Cubillas broke three defenders and took a shot beating the Bulgarian goalkeeper again. It was the final 3-2. The whole country celebrated. On Saturday, June 6th, also in Leon, the Peruvian team played its second match of the World Cup against Morocco. De la Torre and Sotil now were regular starters on this occasion. Cubillas, twice, and Challe scored in the Peruvian triumph 3-0. And to end their participation in group D, Peru had to play versus the powerful German team on June 10th. For that day, Pedro Gonzales was a regular starter for Peru. The match was won by the Europeans 3-1. The Peruvian goal was scored by Cubillas. In the quarterfinals, Peru and Brazil would play one of the best matches of all the world cup championships. In Guadalajara, Peru played with Rubiños, Campos, Fernández, Chumpitaz, Fuentes, Challe, Mifflin, Gallardo, León, Cubillas and Baylón. The match had an intense start and Rivelino overtook the Brazilians; Tostao would put the 2-0. In the minute 28th, after beating Carlos Alberto, Gallardo
Mexico 70 National team, led by Waldir Pereyra “Didi.” scored the goal for the Peruvians. At that time, while Fuentes canceled Jairzinho, Chumpitaz did the same with Pele. In the second half, in minute 7 th, Brazil scored through Tostao. A minute later Hugo Sotil entered to replace Gallardo and in the minute 15th Eladio Reyes replaced Perico Leon. In the minute 24th, after a combination between Reyes and Sotil, Cubillas scored the second goal of Peru. When it seemed that the tie could come, Brazil’s fourth goal came through Jairzinho in the minute 30th. Peru went out being clapped and Brazil would become, a few days later, the world champion.
ARGENTINA 1978: For the 1974 World Cup Germany, Peru was surprisingly left out by the Chilean national team in the qualifying process. But the cycle of a brilliant generation was not over. The following year, our national team would have its revenge winning the Copa América for the second time in its history. We were prepared to face the next Qualifiers, where we knocked out Ecuador and our last opponent, Chile. In the small tournament, played in Cali (Colombia), together with Brazil we qualified leaving the Bolivia national team in the play-offs.

Cubillas saw that the opposing goalkeeper, Rough, had ordered his barrier badly. He sent the shot in a very heterodox way, outside the barrier in the goalkeeper’s goal area. The Scot stretched helplessly because he did not reach it . It was a great goal. Peru won 3-1. With the same lineup, Peru and the Netherlands equaled to zero in a great football demonstration on June 7th. And four days later, on June 11th, without ordering any change, Peru thrashed 4-1 to Iran with goals made by José Velásquez and three by Teófilo Cubillas. The foreign press chose the entire Peruvian midfield in the dream team of the first phase of Argentina 78.
After being absent for eight years, Peru returned to the World Cup, Argentina 1978. After being absent for eight years, Peru returned to a World Cup. And for the first time in our history, a Peruvian coach had been part of a successful process: Marcos Calderón. Those players called up for the World Cup were Otorino Sartor, Juan Cáceres, Ramón Quiroga, Jaime Duarte, Rodulfo Manzo, Héctor Chumpitaz, Rubén Díaz, José Navarro, Roberto Rojas, José Velásquez, César Cueto, Percy Rojas, Raúl Gorriti, Alfredo Quesada, Ernesto Labarthe, Hugo Sotil, Juan José Muñante, Teófilo Cubillas, Juan Carlos Oblitas, Roberto Mosquera, Germán Leguía and Guillermo La Rosa.
Peru was drawn to participate in group 4, along with the Netherlands, Scotland and Iran. The debut would be on June 3rd against Scotland. That day, Marcos Calderón lined up Quiroga, Duarte, Manzo, Chumpitaz, Díaz, Cueto, Velásquez, Cubillas, Muñante, La Rosa and Oblitas. Jordan opened the scoreboard for the Europeans in minute 14th; but, after a wall between Cubillas and Cueto, the latter scored the tie in minute 42nd. In minute 25th of the second half, Teófilo Cubillas, with a powerful shot from outside the area, scored the second Peruvian goal. In minute 30th the referee charged a free kick in favor of Peru.
The second phase was a different story. Peru joined group B, along with Brazil, Argentina and Poland. The winner of the group would go directly to the final of the World Cup. Against Brazil and, with the same eleven players with which the three previous matches began, Peru lost 3-0 on June 14th. On June 18th, with Navarro instead of Díaz and Quesada for Velásquez, Peru fell before Poland 1-0. And against Argentina, on June 21st, Marcos Calderón ordered some changes and lined up Quiroga, Duarte, Manzo, Chumpitaz, Roberto Rojas, Quesada, Cueto, Velásquez, Cubillas, Muñante and Oblitas. At the end of this story, Peru fell 6-0. The illusion was over for Peru with painful defeats. However, this participation left us among the eight best in the world for the second time.

THE LAST WORLD cup:

spain 82 T
he qualifying were tough, versus Colombia and Uruguay, but it was possible to obtain the qualification in a brilliant form defeating the Uruguayans 1-2 in the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo, and qualifying with a tie 0-0 before the same team in Lima. The Brazilian Elba De Padua Lima, better known as Tim, was the coach of the Peruvian team.
Peru was drawn to participate in group 1, along with Italy, Poland and Cameroon. Our debut would be on June 15th, 1982, versus the Cameroon national team, in the city of La Coruña. Tim lined up Quiroga, Duarte, Salguero, Díaz, Olaechea, Velásquez, Cueto, Cubillas, Leguía, Uribe and Oblitas. During the match, Barbadillo would replace Leguía and La Rosa instead of Cubillas. The result was a zero tie.
Before traveling to Spain, the Peruvian team made a pre-world cup tour in America and Europe. One of the most memorable matches was the presentation at the Parc des Princes Stadium to play against the French national team, in which Michel Platini stood out. On April 28th, 1982, with a magnificent pass from César Cueto, Juan Carlos Oblitas scored the only goal of the match. The world talked about the Peruvian national team.
The second match would be versus Italy’s squad, a team that was considered much more powerful than Cameroon. Rossi, Conti and Gentile stood out in that team. By June 18th, in the city of Vigo, coach Tim would make some changes. Quiroga would stay in the goal area. The defense line up by Duarte, Salguero, Díaz and Olaechea; midfield by Velásquez, Cueto y Cubillas; and the fordward team by Barbadillo, Uribe and Oblitas. In the second half, Leguía entered instead of Barbadillo and La Rosa replaced Uribe. Italy started winning the game: Bruno Conti would score for the Italians in minute 19th of the first half. But Peru would add counterattacks until, with 7 minutes remaining, the shot of Rubén “Panadero” Díaz would be deflected by Scirea; the goalkeeper Zoff was misplaced, so the tie came unexpectedly.
Coach Tim prepared the final list of official players, who would represent Peru in their first World Cup in Europe. The men were Eusebio Acasuzo, José Gonzales Ganoza, Ramón Quiroga, Jaime Duarte, Salvador Salguero, Hugo Gastulo, Óscar Arizaga, Miguel Gutiérrez, Rubén Diaz, Jorge Olaechea, José Velásquez, César Cueto, Julio César Uribe, Teófilo Cubillas, Eduardo Malásquez, Percy Rojas, Luis Reyna, Germán Leguía, Gerónimo Barbadillo, Juan Carlos Oblitas, Franco Navarro and Guillermo La Rosa.
Tuesday, June 22nd, was the day chosen to face the Polish team. Once again in the Riazor Stadium in
La Coruña. The four previous matches of the group were evenly-matched and what would happen versus Poland nobody expected. Despite playing with Quiroga, Duarte, Salguero, Díaz, Olaechea, Velásquez, Cueto, Cubillas,Leguía, Uribe and Oblitas. a new lineup, Peru would never find its game. Poland would finish beating 5-1 leaving it out of the World Cup. As anecdotal fact it would be necessary to say that, so far, the last goal of Peru in the World Cup was made by Guillermo La Rosa. The last participation of Peru in this World Cup would also wrap up the end of the cycle of a brilliant generation of Peruvian football players. It would take thirty-six years for Peru to return to a World Cup.

EMBLEMATIC WORLD CUPs PLAYERS 1930-1982 T
hroughout its history, Peruvian football has been characterized by having a set of particularities that make it distinctive in the competitive South American football. The agile, short and at the ground level touch, of good treatment with the ball, are the particular trademark of Peruvians. And this has also been demonstrated in the history of the World Cups. His most emblematic players have been an example of this uniqueness. In this section, we want to highlight a list of eleven Peruvian players who have played in the World Cup. The choice has been extremely complicated, because the criteria for establishing a historical formation can be very variable. Here we have chosen only eleven historical football players of different positions, but the list can be composed of many more players.
Héctor Chumpitaz was called the “Granítico”: he was made of stone. He played in the World Cup in 1970 and 1978. He scored 65 goals in his career, most of them free kicks, which were known as the “chumpigolazos”. His short height did not stop him from shadowing opponents much taller than him, due to a characteristic he possessed: the “double” leap. He took a first leap and, while in the air, seemed to give a second one using his abdominal muscles. In 1976, his fame crossed borders when being part of the America team where he was captain in a match versus a combined European team. At the club level, in Peru, he excelled with Universitario de Deportes, where he won five national titles and the second place in the 1972 Copa Libertadores, and with Sporting Cristal, where he won three national titles. With the national team he was champion of the 1975 Copa América.
The first goalkeeper that Peru had in a World Cup was Juan Valdivieso. Son of a disciplined policeman, Valdivieso was the usual goalkeeper of Alianza Lima. He was a regular starter in the first Peruvian appearance in the World Cups against Romania, in the 1930 World Cup. The best of his career, however, would come in 1935 when he caught four penalties in a tour of Alianza Lima in Chile, a fact that earned him to be known by the name of Mago (Magician). With his club he would get five national titles, and with Peru he would be champion of the 1939 Copa América.
Another outstanding defender who played in the World Cup was right fullback Jaime Duarte, known as “El Chiquillo”. When it was considered to debut in a Peruvian national team with more than twenty-five years, Duarte did it in the 1978 World Cup with twentythree years old, and therefore his nickname. Also he would participate in the 1982 World Cup. In this last one, he stood out for its bravery and dedication, being one of the most memorable matches against Italy, where one of his eyebrow hurt and despite this, he continued playing. At the club level, in Peru, he stood
out with Alianza Lima, where he won three national titles, and with San Agustín, where he also won a national title. Alejandro Villanueva was a prominent player who played in the 1930 World Cup. He was very tall, so he was known as “Manguera”. He was also a master with the ball, accustomed to dribble any rival in front of him. He mastered the technique of the “chalaca” perfectly, a move known in the world as “Chilena”. Villanueva danced marinera in front of the rivals with the sole purpose of demoralizing them. Being a prolific goal scorer, he won five titles with his club Alianza Lima and with the national team he was able to participate in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he scored four goals in two matches. Another one who dribbled with the ball stuck to the foot was Hugo Sotil. Formidable forward, he played in the World Cup of 1970 and 1978. Coming from Deportivo Municipal de Lima, he played at FC Barcelona in Spain from 1973 to 1976, playing alongside world football star Johan Cruyff. Known as Cholo, he made the winning goal versus Colombia, which earned Peru its second Copa América, obtained in 1975. Back in Peru, he played in the Alianza Lima team where he won two national titles. He formed the so-called Dupla de Oro (Golden duo) with Teófilo Cubillas, a nickname created by the Peruvian sports press.

Teófilo Cubillas is precisely Peru’s top scorer in the World Cup: in Mexico 70, Argentina 78 and Spain 82 scored a total of ten goals. He was nicknamed the “Nene”, for his early debut with Alianza Lima and with the national team where, with only twenty years, he helped the Peruvian national team to qualify to the quarterfinals of the 1970 World Cup. Two years later he would be chosen Player of the Year in South America, so he went to the squad of FC Basel of Switzerland. Six months later he signed a big contract with the most popular team in Portugal, FC Porto. The final part of his career took him to play between Alianza Lima and the Strikers of Fort Lauderdale of the United States. The Argentine magazine El Gráfico chose him among the eleven best world football players of all time. In the world, when anyone talks about Peruvian football, many people think about Cubillas. Another player who shined with his own light, being one of the maximum representatives of the Peruvian touch, was César Cueto. He was called the “Poeta de la Zurda”: his passes had metrics; his dribbles, beauty. He was clever to play, a style he learned from street football. His technique seemed spontaneous, although there is nothing more contradictory than a spontaneous technique: it is learnt. His millimetric passes rhymed with what the forwards of his team did, passes that emerged from a prodigious left foot. With the national team, he played in the 1978 and 1982 World Cup and won the 1975 Copa América. At the club level, he won three national titles with Alianza Lima, and went to play to Colombia, where he was also champion with Atlético Nacional and with América of Cali. From the same streets where César Cueto was born, in Barrios Altos (Lima), other prodigies of Peruvian football emerged. One of them was Roberto Challe, who was called the “Niño Terrible”. He was naughty on the court, very roguish and genius with the short game; he had fun with the ball, as if he were a child.

countries such as Italy, Colombia and Mexico. In Peru, he was an idol Sporting Cristal fans, with which he would obtain four national titles, and with América of Mexico also obtained a national title.
This midfielder shone in the 1969 Qualifiers and the 1970 World Cup, where he scored one goal. At the club level, he was a player of Universitario de Deportes, with which he won three national titles and made notable campaigns in the Copa Libertadores. He was also champion with Defensor Lima.
Another outstanding footballer, who used the left edge of the court to carry the ball, center it, shoot it and score it was Alberto Gallardo. This forward was born in Chincha, a small province 200 km south of Lima. He stood out for his speed and discipline, for what he was known as the “Jet”. With the national team he shone in the 1970 World Cup. At the club level, he was the idol of Sporting Cristal, where he won four national championships. He also excelled in Italy, playing for AC Milan and Cagliari, and in Brazil, with Palmeiras, where he won two national championships.
From the traditional Barrios Altos too, Julio César Uribe also emerged. This attacking midfielder learned to play on the broken tracks of his neighborhood. So he knew how to handle the ball stuck to the foot, and would become the hero of the 1981 Qualifiers. On the road to preparation for the 1982 World Cup, he stood out in the famous match versus France, in the Parc des Princes, where he dribbled as he liked to the rivals appealing to a play that the press named as the “spoon.” They called him the Diamond because his game was a luxury. At club level, he performed in
Another who played for his own sector, some years later, was Juan Carlos Oblitas. This left pointer was born in the port of Mollendo, 86 km from the city of Arequipa. He stood out for his speed, skill and good pass; when he touched the ball, he almost always ran on the left and centered with great precision. With the national team he was champion of Copa América in 1975, where he is remembered for the great goal that he made with “chalaca” versus the Chileans. He also shone in the 1978 World Cup and played in the 1982 World Cup. At the club level, he excelled in

Universitario de Deportes, a club with which he won four national titles and the second place in the 1972 Copa Libertadores, and Sporting Cristal, with which he won a national title. Abroad, he played in Elche of Spain, Seresien of Belgium and Tiburones Rojos of Mexico. These eleven players represent millions of Peruvians who, for a long time, followed the national team in their journeys through various countries of the world, and particularly in the World Cup. An eleven-squad for the story that is recorded in our memory. However, the story continues to be written, leaving open to print on its pages the new milestones that are to come. In Peru, football is not only played, it is lived to the surface and represents a part of the nation’s feeling. Players are called to bear our flag.

The distinctive symbol of each football national team is its jersey. It is the visible skin during the match, the identity that is engraved in the eyes of its followers and the emblem that they proudly wear.
T
he shirt of the Peruvian national team, throughout its history, has gone through a series of changes to have obtained its current form. Its first presentation was in the 1927 Campeonato Sudamericano, with a red-and-white vertical striped suit. For the 1930 World Cup Uruguay, it changed to an entirely white color with a red collar, and the national emblem without laurels as a symbol on the chest. In the 1935 Campeonato Sudamericano, (current Copa América) would change again, this time for a white shirt with a horizontal red stripe at half height and the FPF badge. In its latest form, a white shirt with a diagonal red stripe that crosses from the shoulder to the waist, it would be presented at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. After the Olympic campaign, obtaining the 1938 Bolivarian Games and the 1939 South American Championship, the jersey would become the usual skin of the national team. This jersey, with slight variations, has accompanied the Peruvian national team, including its next World Cup matches to date. Thus, it has become a symbol of identity for millions of Peruvians and represents the feeling of a nation.

The awakening of OUR NATIONAL TEAM:
A NEW STORY A
fter the 1982 World Cup, Peru experienced a long period of sports crisis, with discrete results in various international tournaments. We had almost positive results at the end of the 1990s, but it did not materialize with any major sporting success. The following years were very hard. Until before the 2018 Qualifiers to Russia, counting the previous four qualifying processes, in all of them the Peruvian national team had occupied the bottom down positions. Undoubtedly, we had been relegated from the football scene and it seemed that the crisis was not reaching bottom. That period lasted just over thirty years. Peruvian football demanded a deep institutional reform, with medium and long term projects betting to professionalize the sports practice from its base. That is to say, to add to the Peruvian talent for football a correct line of management, with the demands of discipline, planning and continuity in the processes that would allow gradual results. And so it happened. In early 2015, the FPF contacted Ricardo Gareca, a successful Argentine coach and former player, who already had previous experience in Peru, and he was challenged to take the reins of the national team. He was presented with a serious project, with respect to the continuity of the process and regardless of
the results. Coach Gareca accepted and set to work to start a new path: the awakening of the Peruvian national team. The first event would take place in June 2015, when Peru disputed the Copa América, which was to take place in the neighboring country of Chile. The goal was to find the team, with a view to the upcoming 2018 Qualifiers to Russia. That is how a new cycle began.
2015 COPA AMÉRICA CHILE Bronze men
It was in Chile, where volcanoes are activated, where the Peruvian national team led by Ricardo Gareca experienced its first major eruption. The city of Temuco was the first center of operations of the red-and-white team shirt for this Copa América. There began an effort to rebuild not only the spirit of competition, but also the football identity of our country. This coach born in Tapiales (province of Buenos Aires, Argentina) had in his hands the mission of returning to the Peruvian football the smile for the triumph. And it was a challenge that he wanted to face: “Cacho Cordoba, a friend whom I played in Boca Juniors with, was the one who recommended me to go to Peru. He told me that the national team fit my football preference. And he was right,” he said in an interview for ESPN.
Federación peruana de fútbol
Despite his devotion for patience, coach Gareca was very energetic in his first practices with Peru. In training prior to the first friendly match before the Copa América, versus Venezuela in Fort Lauderdale, one of his main requests was to play with the ball on the court, recovering the Peruvian touch. In his road map, during these three years with the Peruvian national team, the red-and-white coach modified many things except his idea of play: good treatment of the ball, associations in each area of the field and the pursuit for being heroes always. The basic idea was to go back to the origins, recover the touch and the technique until associating them with the physical demands of the high competition. It was going to be a long and extremely difficult path, but coach Gareca was convinced that it would work. For the 2015 Copa América Chile, the red-and-white coach had preserved much of the base left in the two previous preparation processes with Sergio Markarián and Pablo Bengoechea, although he also called up some players who would make their debut in the national team. With three months in control, coach Gareca gave some light on how he wanted to find the dream team. Thus, it was betting little by little on new names like Christian Cueva, Pedro Gallese and Renato Tapia, among others, who would be the base of the national team in a short time. The national team would play Group C, along with Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, a difficult task. The debut took place on June 14th, at the Germán Becker Stadium in Temuco, against the powerful Brazilian team. Soon Peru opened the scoreboard in their debut: a bad rejection of the goalkeeper, Jefferson left Cueva with the option of shooting directly to the goal area. The national team that had arrived with a minimum dose of expectations began to show a more competitive seal. Brazil, by a wide margin favorite, tied very fast through Neymar. The five-time world champions had to leave large amounts of drops

of sweat to reach the triumphant goal in the last minutes. Douglas Costa saved the bitter afternoon to coach Dunga. A year later, Peru would have its great revenge. On June 18th, 2015, the red-and-white national team played versus Venezuela with an injury: Jefferson Farfán had a foot injury and Ricardo Gareca reordered the scheme for the entry of Claudio Pizarro. The Bombardero de los Andes was decisive that night when scoring the only goal against Venezuelan team. That 1-0, at the Elias Figueroa Stadium in Valparaiso, opened the option of repeating the qualification to the quarterfinals of 2011. The country’s illusion was the force of contention against the cold port of Chile. Three days later, Ricardo Gareca would face an old acquaintance, José Pekerman. Peru would have to play a tough match against the Colombian national team. Within the proposal to always look at the opposite goal area, Peru exhibited before the Colombians
a great defensive order and full knowledge of its limitations. Enough to avoid many problems and add the necessary point for qualification. The 0-0 gave us the qualification to the next round, ending second place in the group. The quarterfinals would be played on June 25th against the national team of Bolivia. That match would be the sport explosion of Paolo Guerrero with the national team, which happened in Germán Becker Stadium in Temuco. The three goals of the “Depredador” gave us the pass to the semifinals. The hat trick was a confirmation: the leadership of Guerrero appeared as a fulminating wave. The definition to reach the final of the Copa América was versus the Chilean host. The Chileans wanted to win the Copa América with their golden generation. Without doubt we were facing one of the main challenges at the start of the Gareca era. The match began with crowed arena in the National Stadium

of Santiago. The actions were adverse due to the expulsion of Carlos Zambrano. “We have to continue with the attack. Let’s play 4-4-1,” the Argentine coach told Jefferson Farfán. It was going to be his bet throughout this process: make drastic decisions on and off the field, and never look back. And despite having one player less, Peru offered a fight to the ‘Mapocho’ (Chilean) team. However, the double by Eduardo Vargas broke the hope for a few minutes. Gary Medel’ own goal returned it to us, although it was not enough. It was a hard fall, but the good signs of progress as a team continued to appear for Peru. In the match for third place, versus Paraguay, mantained a solid squad and the team’s efficiency was restored. André Carrillo and Guerrero were the goal scorer contribution for that 2-0 that made repeat the registered trademark in Argentina 2011: a new South American bronze medal. It was the first podium that was going to get the Peruvian team under the command of Ricardo Gareca and his technical coaching staff. The illusion of millions of Peruvian fans wanted Peru to qualify to the World Cup after being absent for thirty-six years. The path was already beginning.
2016 COPA AMÉRICA CENTENARIO A new commitment
The 2018 Qualifiers to Russia began with many illusions for Peru, but the results were adverse. Between October 2015 and March 2016 six qualifying were disputed, but of 18 possible points, we barely got 4. A short rest was achieved by the celebration of the Copa América Centenario, the ideal time and setting for coach Gareca to have the opportunity to rethink his team strategies and could renew his squad with new blood. Thus, a young Peruvian squad, based on footballers from the local tournament, traveled to the United States with the hope of giving the best of them in the Cup. What happened, in that June of 2016, was
the finding of a team that offered tenacious resistance against any rival before it could be overcome. It was the oxygen needed for a team looking for positive results. The city of Seattle, creative center of the best proposals of alternative rock in the 1990s, was the venue where the Peruvian national team had to show as a tuned orchestra. And the new players wanted to show themselves before the coach as valid options for up coming line ups call. Coach Gareca had taken the decision to give a chance to players like Aldo Corzo, Miguel Trauco and Edison Flores. “It was a very brave decision and we always blindly support him,” said Edwin Oviedo, President of the FPF, in the last months of 2017. With the support of the management, a daring process of reinvention began.

“I think I’ve already found a team,” Ricardo Gareca said to the FPF’s Sports Director, Juan Carlos Oblitas, after the Copa América. And he would begin to have it on June 4th, 2016, in the debut of the tournament, when this story began to be written with new certainties and challenges to meet. Peru had been drawn in Group B, along with Brazil, Ecuador and Haiti. The first match was played at the CenturyLink Field Stadium in Seattle, versus the Haitian national team, in a match where the Peruvian team was the favorite in the previous analysis. Although this was not reflected at the end of the match with a somewhat closed scoreboard (1-0). The red-and white team had the ball, handled the initiative of attack, however, it did not find the effectiveness until a pass by Edison Flores found Paolo Guerrero in his natural habitat: the area. It was a great “full-length dive” and a relief. Gareca’s new team was also learning to take on its role as a favorite on the court: to master the pressure; this thanks to the advice of sports psychologist Marcelo Márquez. It was another step forward in the country of great opportunities. Three days after the victory against the Haitians, the Peruvian team had to cross 1 800km and land in the seething city of Phoenix. The state capital of Arizona received the squad with average temperatures of forty degrees. For good state of mind of the coaching staff of Ricardo Gareca, the site where the second match was to be played, versus Ecuador, was the roofed stadium of the University of Phoenix. On the green carpet of this impressive stadium, on June 8th, 2016, the red-andwhite team had 15 minutes of overwhelming brilliance. In minute 13th, with goals from Christian Cueva -prior “little clock” to leave behind the northern defense- and Edison Flores, Peru passed over 2-0 against Ecuador. It was difficult to keep the performance, although that squad already gave signs of a progress gained with more than twenty days of work. The goals of Valencia

see a more even match. In the closing of the match, the Peruvian Christian Ramos put the top of the revolutions of the fans, but the match was 0-0. In the definition by penalties, the red-and-white team was surpassed by 4-2. However, Copa América Centenario, closed the curtain for Peru with a promise of good news. In the United States, Ricardo Gareca was able to find a special find: a team, his team.
Performance chart and Bolaños to level the result postponed the illusion, but did not stop the enthusiasm. The renewed Peruvian team began to announce their ability and instinct to compete. The last match of the group would be played on June 12th, 2016, versus Brazil, at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough (Boston). That icy night, with strong winds, the Peruvian team had to withstand the strikes of the Scratch. The weight of the meeting fell on a midfielder that worked a lot with Adan Balbin and Óscar Vilchez. On the defensive side, Alberto Rodríguez’s anticipation was a relief from the relentless Brazilian attack. If Peru wanted to qualify for the quarterfinals, it had to beat Brazil led by Dunga. It seemed a tough mission before the control of the five-time world champion. The speed at the time of the counterattack appeared as the only red-and-white card to give the big blow.
In minute 74, Andy Polo run over right after a wall with Paolo Guerrero. The current Portland player Tambers reached the last line and focused for Raúl Ruidíaz. The man from Morelia touched the ball to goalkeeper Alisson’s impotence, in a controversial move that forced the referee Andrés Cunha to paralyze the match. After consulting with his assistants, for almost 4 minutes, the Uruguayan referee validated the goal. The match resumed and Peru knew how to resist. The feat had finally been achieved. The 1-0 victory against Brazil represents one of the biggest milestones in this new Peruvian national team process. The hopes had returned again for the country. In the next round, the pass to the semifinals would be defined versus Colombia; again the Pekerman team was our rival. Unlike what happened in 2015, in Chile, the Metlife Stadium in New Jersey could

he path to Russia 2018 was not easy at all. Peru had to face again the so called “World’s toughest qualifiers” in a process of reorganization both institutional and sports renewal. But the hopes were never left aside, and it was planned to build with a professional, serious and disciplined work, as well as a lot of willingness and commitment on the part of the coaching staff and the players of the national team. This is the story of the successful path of the Peruvian national team towards the World Cup.
AN UNPROMISING BEGINNING The illusion of a new pre-World Cup cycle for Peru began in the city of Barranquilla on October 8th, 2015, after having achieved a bronze medal in the Copa América in Chile. Despite a long wait of thirty-six years without being in a World Cup that became endless for the Peruvians, the hopes were placed on the team of Ricardo Gareca. However, the beginning of the 2018 Qualifiers to Russia was not easy. Against Colombia, in the first match, the team knew how to face each other in an even match and at times with many red-andwhite initiatives. Pekerman´s team, knew to be more forceful and ended up winning the match with a score of 2-0.
For the first match at home, against Chile, the ‘mapochos’ (Chileans) still dragged their peak performance of the Copa América where they were champions: they finished by overcoming 3-4 at the National Stadium in Lima. The expulsion of Christian Cueva that night was decisive and the actions were unbalanced. Since that incident, the Peruvian team only had one red card more in the entire qualifying process (Ramos in the match versus Ecuador, in Quito, in September 2017). Only in the third round of the Qualifiers, Peru could add its first 3 points, with the 1-0 win versus Paraguay in Lima. But there was breathing moment for the red-and-white team in this competition; and even more so if the standings was looking uncomfortably. The loss we suffered against Brazil (3-0) put us again in uncertainty. The next double match games, which would be played in March 2016, was presented with great urgency for the national team. The missteps that would come before Venezuela in Lima, with a thin draw 2-2, and versus Uruguay in Montevideo, where the charruas (Uruguayans) got a goal by Cavani to take the win, and would put us in a critical situation. In six first dates, we had only obtained 4 points out of 18 possible and we were at the bottom of the standings. Press, fans and some analysts concluded

that, perhaps, it was time to forget the illusion of Russia 2018 and start a stage of generational change. Ricardo Gareca, calm in the speech, but firm in any decision, said “yes” to the renewal in his base of players. What he did not accept was to withdraw from the World Cup goal. Change and belief were his premises: two verbs turned into a real engine that helped lead us to the right path.
THE RENEWED PERUVIAN NATIONAL TEAM The renaissance of the national team, as we saw, would occur with the 2016 Copa América Centenario, in the United States. After a good performance of the Peruvian squad, coach returned to Lima with a list full of new names and with the conviction of being able to establish a new profile of the player of national team without resenting the conditions in the high competition. But the path in the Qualifiers was going to be difficult. Moving up in the standings was not an immediate event, but it took months of patient waiting, a lot of will, discipline and integrity. Ricardo Gareca was not alone in that reconstruction mission. He has shown leadership conditions not only within his squad of players, but also to lead a varied coaching staff where all have merits. There is the technical assistant Sergio Santin, with the support of Nolberto Solano and Alfredo Honores (goalkeeper coach); those in charge of fitness coaching Néstor Bonillo (at the head) and Adrian Vaccarini; as well as the psychologist Marcelo Márquez and doctor Julio Segura. This is a professional group focused on boosting the strengths of a team that was reuniting with its essence, although still without seeing the results in its favor. Back to the Qualifiers, after the Copa América Centenario, losing against Bolivia in La Paz (2-0), did
not damage the spirits of the national team, although it maintained it in the last places of the standings. It was difficult to take steps forward, but the good match played against Ecuador in Lima, with a score of 2-1, gave us the taste of victory after a long time in this pre-World Cup competition. The next date was bittersweet. On October 6th, 2016, in Lima, we played a match with a lot of attitude versus Argentina, without giving up, which ended up being a 2-2 draw. Five days later, versus Chile we would show the same verve, but the result would not be favorable: we would fall 2-1 at the National Stadium in Santiago. “Before Chile we played well, I knew that the way forward was there. However, we did not add, I felt it was a matter of time to wait for some better news,” Gareca explained in his assessment of the World Cup qualification. However, in that October 2016 few believed that Peru would be able to achieve the feat. The second round of the Qualifiers had started and we only had 8 points. It was not long before the good Peruvian game was reflected in results. And this happened in Asuncion, with a great triumph, after beating 4-1 Paraguay. This win announced the steps of a Peruvian team which worked hard to win a spot in the World Cup. For some, it was the best football exhibition of the Gareca time: good play had been combined with efficiency. It was the quick maturity of a group with an average age of twenty-four years. In less than a month, Peru not only added 3 points that worked as an oxygen tank: from Zurich one more point in favor of the red-and-white was announced. FIFA sanctioned Bolivia for the poor registration of Paraguayan nationalized Bolivian player Nelson Cabrera. The punishment determined that the red and white remained with the 3 points of that match lost in La Paz, an achievement obtained that thanks to the management of the FPF, led by its President Edwin Oviedo. Of those 8 points that accompanied

the agony, we were going to close 2016 with 14 points to recover all vital signs. November 15th, 2016 has been recorded as the night that Peru lost for the last time, in official and friendly matches. But the 2-0 loss against Tite’s powerful and inspired Brazil did not stop the red-and-white’s attack on the final dates of the Qualifiers. And as confirmation of this, the next double date, versus Venezuela and Uruguay, was presented as the test that determined to preserve (or not) an opportunity to qualify for the World Cup. During that March of 2017, Peru could add 4 points; and against the Uruguayans, in the National Stadium of Lima, we were able to show a few minutes of a very high level football. Although it was difficult to predict if this performance would let us go to Russia, the only certainty was that the Peruvian national team would fight standing until the end.
THE FINAL STEP AND THE JOY For the last part of the Qualifiers, in 2017, the Peruvian team had chances to reach a spot in the World Cup. We just had to win 6 points against Bolivia in Lima, and against Ecuador in Quito, in order to become a strong candidate. And the team did it. There, a large part of this qualifying was sealed. The evolution of the Peruvian team now approached the strength of a squad capable of imposing conditions outside it’s home. On September 5th, against the Ecuadorians none of the things that happened were coincidence: every action in the field obeyed to a elaborated strategy. Peru was a team with automatisms and remarkable partnerships on the court. The goals of Flores and Hurtado, in the final 2-1, were the result of controlling the game in a perfect manner. The match versus Bolivia was held in Lima, despite its moments of suspense, it also confirmed that the Peruvian team could handle their anxieties. The 2-1 victory put us in the qualifying position.

The last two matches were heart-stopping for all South America, with seven teams that were fighting for three and a half places to qualify. Peru traveled to Buenos Aires to play versus the powerful national team of Argentina, urged to achieve a victory. The strong Peruvian defense and a great tactical approach gave us a 0-0 draw at La Bombonera Stadium. The decisive match versus Colombia, in Lima, would also meant life or death for two teams that fought for a spot. Still waiting for the other results of the Qualifiers, Colombia scored in minute 55th. But an indirect free kick perfectly executed by captain Paolo Guerrero, that was touched by goalkeeper Ospina, gave us a tie in the scoreboard and the joy. The final score (26 points), and a goal ahead of Chile, opened the doors of the playoff against New Zealand. The qualifying had not yet been achieved, but there was only one last step. The team of coach Gareca was waiting for its longest trip. It was another test to show its maturity and mental strength, because in any football balance made before to the match with New Zealand, Peru was clearly the favorite team. It was difficult to handle it in Wellington, with a 0-0 that left Peruvian fans with great expectations. The final moment to assume that responsibility of prominence was November 15th, 2017. There were no more postponements. Jefferson Farfán relieved the pressure with a shot fired with soul, heart and life, as if we were reciting the words of a Peruvian waltz before starting with an unforgettable party. Only the 2-0 of Christian Ramos reduced the heart rate of that night at the National Stadium of Lima. We had waited so long for this: Peru after thirty-six years was in the 2018 World Cup Russia. The great achievement was reached by a team that was consolidated on the way, which knew how to reinvent itself, have mental strength and commitment. In the process, a family was formed that knew how to set a goal and not surrender until it was achieved.

Federación peruana de fútbol
Date of birth: February 10, 1958 Place of birth: Tapiales, Argentina
R
icardo Gareca’s career as a player began in the youth leagues of Boca Juniors. In 1978 he debuted in the Argentina Premier Football Division as a forward, and remained in the team for a few years before being loaned out to the club Sarmiento de Junin. He played there during the Metropolitano tournament in 1981, standing out like goal scorer and scoring 13 goals in 33 matches. His good performance made Boca ask him to go back for the following year. When he went back to the xeneize team, Ricardo Gareca consolidated as one of the big stars and scored 62 goals in 114 matches played in three years. His unexpected departure came after the 1984 football strike, which ended with his transfer to River Plate for the following season. In the millionaire team he did not do as expected, he played few matches and in the same year he was transferred to América de Cali from Colombia. In Colombia, Ricardo Gareca had his best moments as a football player. He was part of what has perhaps been the best team in the history of América de Cali. The year he arrived, he achieved the national title and the two-time championship in 1986. He also participate at the final of the Copa Libertadores in those years, as well as in 1987, but América de Cali did not manage to get the title in any of those times. In spite of this, Ricardo Gareca was called to the Argentina national team to play the qualifiers for Mexico 86, becoming the hero by scoring the draw 2-2 in the match that his team played against Peru, which meant the classification of the albiceleste (Argentine national team) to the World Cup that would end up winning.
Nationality: Argentine Despite the great contribution to his team, Ricardo Gareca was not included in the squad to the World Cup in Mexico 86. That year, in Colombia, he ended his career in the Cali team with 57 goals in 118 matches and returned to Argentina, to the club Velez Sarsfield, for the 1989 season. In the Liniers team he accumulated 117 matches in which he scored 24 goals, closing his stage in 1992. Near the end of his career, he signed for Independiente de Avellaneda, where he played 47 matches and scored 11 goals. With the Rey de Copas he obtained his only international title as a player: the South American Supercopa. Ricardo Gareca began his career as a coach at the San Martín de Tucumán, in the 1995 season. The following year he arrived at Talleres de Córdoba, a club with which he achieved his first accomplishments as a coach. In the 97/98 season he obtained the title of the National First B Division and the promotion to the highest category of Argentine soccer. The club qualified to the extinct 1999 CONMEBOL Cup and became a surprise champion after defeating the Centro Sportivo Alagoano in Brazil in the final match. His good results as a coach took him to Colón for the 2000 season, the following year he returned to Talleres. From there, he began a long journey for several teams: Quilmes and Argentinos Juniors in Argentina, and América de Cali and Independiente de Santa Fe in Colombia. But it was only with his arrival at Universitario de Deportes, in Peru, that he obtained again a title. Ricardo Gareca formed a team that is well remembered and won the 2008 Torneo Apertura, although the performance could not keep him for the

the first approaches were taken to take the position of national coach. In March 2015 he accepted the position and began his process with the national team with a view to the 2018 Russia Qualifiers. Sergio Santin, as technical assistant, and Néstor Bonillo, as a physical trainer, arrived with him. Then they joined the coaching staff Nolberto Solano, as a technical assistant, and Alfredo Honores, as the goalkeeper coach. Honores worked with Gareca during his stage at Universitario.
second part of the year and the Universitario team could not get the national title. Despite this, that stage of almost a year and a half of Peruvian football ended up being transcendent for his subsequent arrival in the Peruvian national team. After passing for “U,” Ricardo Gareca returned to coach in the Argentine soccer, punctually to one of his former teams: Velez Sarsfield. His stage in the Liniers team was the most successful in his career as a coach to date. Upon his arrival, he won the 2009 Closing title. In the following years, Velez became a habitual leader of Argentine soccer. He obtained the 2011 Torneo Clausura, as well as reaching the semifinals of Libertadores that same
year. Gareca got two more titles with Velez. He won the 2012 Apertura, which led him to compete in the final of the Premier Division Championship in June 2013 against Newell’s Old Boys, where he won 1-0, thus obtaining his last title as head coach of the Liniers team. That would be the last year of Gareca as a coach in Argentina, given that the following year he accepted the proposal to coach Palmeiras of Brazil. He arrived to the Verdão in May of 2014, but by September of that year he left the Paulistan team. It is in this context that, at the beginning of 2015, with the new directive chaired by Edwin Oviedo and Juan Carlos Oblitas as Sports Director of the FPF,
He debuted leading Peru in a friendly match versus Venezuela that lost 1-0. But his first achievement was not long in coming. It reached the third place of the 2015 Copa América Chile, after defeating Paraguay 2-0 in the match for the third place. The beginning of the Qualifiers was not the best, but a good performance at the Copa América Centenario tournament, in 2016, allowed him to expand the universe of players to call and reach the last rounds with open options. Peru’s unbeaten winning streak in 2017 led him to finish the qualifying round in the playoff, leaving historical victories such as the comeback 2-1 to Uruguay in Lima or the 1-2 victory in Quito. Peru defeated New Zealand 2-0 on aggregate of the playoff and was the last qualifier to the World Cup. Peru qualifying to the World Cup is the biggest milestone in his career as a coach for Ricardo Gareca, who managed to get the Peruvian team to reach the maximum football competition after thirty six years of absence.
