How do you take a 10,000-squarefoot historic home on Long Island’s Vanderbilt Estate and update it for modern living? When a local realtor turned to Ethan Allen for help, design consultants Donna Classi and Joanne Lafauci, assisted by district visual merchandiser Dawn Turner, took on the challenge.
For Joanne, the entryway was the key to unlocking the design. “When we got the foyer right, we did justice to the property.” Inspired by the exterior of the home, which Donna described as “nestled in nature,” they gave the interior a cozy feel and a palette the new owner would never grow tired of.
For Dawn this ambitious project was a chance to flex her own design background. “Get me a floor plan. Get me a layout. Give me a dream, and we'll see what we can do.”
The dining room mural was another feature the realtor wanted to keep, so the designers incorporated its colors into the space’s fabrics and rug. Tufted chairs and dark wood furniture bring in an Old Hollywood feel—but the mural is the star of the show.
The spacious living room had a beautiful stone fireplace that came with the house, but the dark stone had a lot of visual weight. The design team balanced it with two dramatic heron art prints, then selected two sofas and some accent chairs in lighter, more transitional fabrics.
The four-poster bed is another nod to the home’s historic roots, but its clean lines anchor the room firmly in “today.” A modern sawhorse desk adds work space without inhibiting the natural light from the window.
