Nature’s Sanctuary: The Next Level of EcoLuxNature at Corippo Hotel & Spa Diffuso - Where Heritage Meets Wellness: Corippo’s EcoLuxNature Spa Diffuso Experience

Internal Concept Draft: Confidential Use Only!

This document represents a concept draft for the Corippo Hotel & Spa Diffuso project, intended strictly for internal use. It is not for sharing or distribution outside of the Corippo Foundation and its management. We trust in your confidentiality and look forward to further discussion and approval.

In today’s luxury landscape, the true essence of opulence is increasingly being redefined, not by extravagance, but by a deep connection to the natural world. HoteliersGuild’s new DEEPERLUXURY chapter, EcoLuxNature, embodies this shift, focusing on nature as the ultimate luxury. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between high-end luxury hotels and eco retreats, placing a strong emphasis on sustainable architecture, regional cuisine, and cultural preservation.

Our mission of “giving back to the industry” takes on new meaning as we embrace nature’s unspoiled beauty as the pinnacle of luxury. By curating experiences that immerse guests in the serenity and grandeur of the natural world, we are not only redefining luxury but also promoting sustainability and responsible tourism.

A prime example of our commitment to this philosophy is our collaboration with the Corippo Foundation. Our goal is to elevate Switzerland’s smallest village into an internationally recognized Albergo & Spa Diffuso, setting a new standard in EcoLuxNature experiences. This

initiative demonstrates how heritage preservation and modern sustainability can seamlessly integrate to offer an unparalleled and wellbeing experience.

We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our members and CHC-Alliance Partners who have supported this initiative pro-bono, in the true spirit of HoteliersGuild. Special thanks go to our esteemed Ambassadors and SIRIUSACADEMYAWARD laureates, Sonu and Eva Shivdasani of SONEVA , for their unwavering support for the SIRIUSACADEMYCAMPAIGN Their pioneering SLOWLIFE philosophy, which emphasizes sustainability and a deep connection to the natural world, has provided invaluable guidance and inspiration for the Corippo concept. Additionally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Alberto Apostoli and Studio Apostoli, Philippe Clarinval of the HoteliersGuild Academy of Hospitality Arts, Prof. Dr. Urs Pohlman and the ananné group, Lindsey Ueberroth of Preferred Travel Group, Astrid Oberhummer and the Lobster Communications team, Mark Forrester of 80DAYS , Michel Mein of seventhart, and Artsy Africa. Their collective generous pro-bono efforts have been instrumental in bringing our DEEPERLUXURY vision to life.

As we continue to develop the EcoLuxNature chapter, we have invited our global membership to join us in celebrating nature’s unparalleled beauty and in setting new standards for eco-luxurious, responsible travel. Together, we can create spaces where the natural world takes center stage, offering guests a chance to rediscover the true meaning of luxury.

Alberto Apostoli: THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

When discussing sustainable architecture and design, I believe it’s essential to make an initial distinction: designing with the sole driver of ecosystem preservation or expanding the concept of sustainability to consider not only selected raw materials, the production chain, energy and resource efficiency, but also how a specific structure or product will interact with the environment on multiple levels.

For me, sustainability also means a project’s ability to connect with the essence of its location, creating links to ancestral traditions and local customs. Only then a resort, wellness center, or a spa can truly exist in harmony with the landscape and social environment, respecting and thus embodying sustainability. Following this philosophy, I envision the future of the industry relying on biocompatible wellness centers that harmonize with the natural morphology of the land and utilize renewable energy sources.

The concept and design of Preistoriche Green Lodges exemplify this approach. The lodge fully respects the context of Parco Terme Preistoriche Resort & Spa in Montegrotto Terme, Italy, integrating seamlessly with its ancient trees through wooden stilts. It serves as a manifesto for biophilic architecture principles, emphasizing human adaptation to the natural world (not the opposite), a complete fusion between built structures and the existing ecosystem. Naturally, any truly sustainable project must maintain coherence at every depth. Preistoriche Green Lodge achieves zero emissions, employs ecofriendly materials, and directly heats using thermal water. Its interior features reclaimed and recycled materials, eco-sustainable yarns, and cellulose-based coatings from FSC-certified sources.

Similarly, for Lefay Resort & SPA Lago di Garda in Brescia, Italy, which I restyled in 2022, a similar approach was taken. Environmental and territorial context informed sustainable choices related to the resort’s energy supply. Biomass systems, cogeneration, photovoltaic panels, and rainwater collection tanks contribute to water conservation. The five-star resort blends seamlessly into the local landscape, minimizing visual impact through thoughtful architectural configuration and natural materials.

To make this holistic design approach which addresses multiple layers and encompasses all relevant variables, the preferred method for new projects, we must deepen our understanding of biotourism fundamentals. Personally, I summarize it as seeking a connection with the local territory and culture in every chosen destination. This involves balance with the surrounding environment, respect for landscape and natural peculiarities, and a proactive commitment to preserving a place’s cultural heritage. Ultimately, it means transforming architectural structures from mere shells into symbolic spaces."

To translate these principles into concrete design standards and to support spas and wellness centers in their sustainable transformation, I was among the co-founders of the Sustainable SPA Association (based in the United Kingdom but with international reach). Since 2020, I’ve been laying the groundwork for a virtuous ranking of facilities, evaluating their green coefficient in terms of resource consumption, use of bioenergy, and ecofriendly products, including during the treatment phase. Additionally, I am a member of HoteliersGuild, an international network actively shaping a new leadership class—innovative thinkers and enlightened designers—for the hospitality industry. Our approach emphasizes innovative luxury that aligns with sustainability

Joining Forces for the EcoLuxNature Concept:

Welcome, visionary SmartLuxury Spa Expert

Prof. Dr. Urs Pohlman!

Dear Frank,

Based on our wonderful conversations I am honoured to join the HoteliersGuild impulse and offering my support for initiatives and projects of the Corippo Foundation.

As I had mentioned, my research experience started from basic questions of sensory experiences and the development of consciousness. End of the 90s, this was a topic that targeted elements of understanding human consciousness and its basis in sensory activity at the Max-Planck-Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt, Germany and the University of Heidelberg leading to my PhD. At Duke University, NC/USA, I deepened this approach at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience and applied it within clinical research at Duke Medical Center.

Later, at Basel University I co-developed a novel medication for a neuroimmunological disorder (Multiple sclerosis). After the foundation of ananné as an innovative concept of holistic skincare with a medical foundation, we had the opportunity of working with fine Spas in Germany and Switzerland. The Spa of Schloss Elmau was our first cooperation more specifically for skincare to be followed by a selection of Spas extending the demand to developing entire Spa concepts or merging our understanding with existing concepts. Like this cooperation with Schloss Elmau we entered into an ongoing cooperation with the Lanserhof Group, where the aim is to offer a high level of medical skincare for a refined healthy lifestyle.

In 2022, we had the wonderful chance to joining a new project with the Sawiris Group (Orascom) for contributing to their hotel-project on Mamula Island, Montenegro (the initial introductory concept for the Mamula is attached). For the Mamula Island, we had the chance to create a completely new and ananné-branded Spa with running it during the founding first year (2023) with our own Spa director. Also in 2023, we contributed to reshaping the Spa at the Capra Hotel, Saas Fee to be continued in 2024 with extending the Spa concept into offering retreats for guests with specific topics.

Prof. Dr. Urs Pohlman Founder of ananné group

Our aim is to extend the art of relaxation and recreational processes by neuroscience taking a more scientific understanding into pragmatic applications for Spa teams and their clients. In an integrative concept from design of hardware into creating a guest journey throw-out their stay in the hotel, we aim to focus on unique features of the hotel and its environment and embedding them into the treatment rituals.

Within our understanding, offering deep relaxation is important as the foundation for later reactivating the guests with new stimuli that inspire them to optimize their respective lifestyle. Reconnecting as they return into their everyday life, they take back home encouragements based on a better understanding of their own body-mind relation. These inspirations attach the guest to the respective location creating a lasting relationship for further deepening of the original impulse. This requires an ongoing process of refining the Spa to offer new levels for the guest’s next visit.

As a neuroscientist and a neurologist by training my aim is to encourage an adaptation of understanding the human body and mind. Visiting the sophisticated world of amazing hotels is the best opportunity to inspire one’s own lifestyle for reaching a healthier and even more self-protecting selfconduct. The inspiration should come from a realm of hospitality, wellbeing, and nature, not specifically with a whitecoat of a clinic. Yet, the medical approach can consult the art of wellbeing and offer specific features for better living.

With this background I would be honoured to cooperating with the outstanding personalities who join in the HoteliersGuild and supporting the Corippo Foundation in developing a unique oasis of peaceful reorientation for the essential.

With kind regards!

THE VILLAGEDESERTED THEN

A Glimpse into Switzerland’s Past

Corippo, a Swiss commune in the canton of Ticino, is perched on a steep promontory in the Verzasca Valley. Established as an independent commune in 1822, Corippo retains its rugged and primitive charm, reflecting a rural way of life that dates back over 700 years. For centuries, the locals sustained themselves through agriculture. In 1850, the population

peaked at 315 inhabitants. However, by 1950, due to emigration to California and Australia, the village’s population dwindled to just 70. Today, only 11 inhabitants remain. Starting from April 2021, Corippo has become part of the new Verzasca municipality.

Rediscovering the Heartbeat of Corippo: An Emotional Revival

The echoes of Corippo’s past still linger in the minds of its older inhabitants, who fondly remember names like Angiolina, Martino, Luigino, and Siro. Over 50 years have passed since these cherished souls left their homes, often in haste, leaving kitchens untidy and memories scattered like fragments of a bygone era. Yet, the essence of their lives and the vibrancy they brought to the village have not faded into oblivion.

In a heartfelt tribute to Corippo’s rich heritage, their stories are now immortalized in the new Albergo Diffuso— an innovative hotel concept that breathes life back into the village by transforming these historical homes into unique guest accommodations.

Each room with more to come is named after the village’s former residents, ensuring their legacy endures within the very walls they once called home.

It's been a poignant moment when the Albergo Diffuso in Corippo opened its doors some time ago, embracing a concept that has flourished in Italy. It aims to rejuvenate this picturesque village, weaving the threads of past and present to create a tapestry of communal life, culture, and hospitality. This revival not only preserves the memories of those who once animated Corippo but also infuses the village with a renewed spirit, inviting guests to experience its timeless charm and history.
