Select Sires Young Sire Program-II David Thorbahn Executive Vice President & General Manager Brian House Beef Program Manager Dr. Aaron Arnett Beef Genetics Specialist

The YSP-II program allows breeders access to young sires at 50% of their current retail price and subsequently generates higher accuracies on these bulls in a shorter period of time. Participating herds must submit performance data to their respective breed association. A maximum of 20 units per bull per breeder can be used with no limit on the number of bulls. For breeds that require them, A.I. certificates must be purchased at cost. Cooperators sign a YSP-II agreement that is returned to Select Sires. Young sires in the directory that are availabe for 2010 are desginated with a YSP-II logo on their picture:

Look for the Targeting the Brand Logo Welcome to the 2010 Select Sires directory. As a professional in the beef industry, you understand the potential of superior genetics to increase both profitability of your operation and long-term consumer demand. Select Sires has again assembled an outstanding lineup of bulls that can meet the goals you have set for your cowherd. And for the second year in a row, Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) is honored to be a part of the Select Sires directory. In the 31-year history of the Certified Angus Beef ® brand, the economic conditions of 2009 could be looked upon as the most difficult marketplace Director Supply Development ever. The U.S. consumer has been budget strapped, watching every penny Certified Angus Beef LLC spent at the grocery store and significantly cutting back on dining out in restaurants. On top of that, many critical export markets are still limited with BSE restrictions. But the CAB brand proved its value/price relationship, and demand for it outpaced that for USDA Choice. As a result, the brand posted an incredible year with licensees selling a record 663 million pounds, up nearly 30 million from last year’s previous all-time high. The facts are clear. Consumers love the taste of highly marbled beef like CAB and still consider it a smart purchase, even when the budget is tight. Mark A. McCully

Still, times have been difficult for all the beef industry segments. Cattle feeders have been hit especially hard, but more than once I have been told about pens that managed to stay in the black. Invariably, it was because of the extra premium dollars from CAB and USDA Prime qualifiers, and participation in age- and source-verified programs like AngusSource®. CAB has analyzed several very large feedlot databases and they all point to the same result: on average, high marbling cattle are the most profitable cattle in the feedlot. The cow-calf producer who has aligned his genetics and management for this high Quality Grade target is finding increased demand for his feeder cattle. For those retaining ownership, the grid premiums speak for themselves. Is single-trait selection the answer? …Only if that trait is “profit!” Producers using the genetics and the tools available are weaning more pounds of calf for each cow exposed and those calves are worth more because of their feeding and grading potential. Through our Feedlot Licensing Program, CAB has brought together over 60 feedlots throughout the country focused on Angus genetics and managing cattle to a high quality target. A list of these feedlots is available at www.CABPartners.com. As you make the investment in Select Sires genetics, I encourage you to visit with these feedlots to discuss marketing options for your Angus-sired calves. Bottom line, the genetic tools work, and Select Sires is a leader in bringing them to bear in offering advanced genetics for your cowherd that will help you produce a calf worth more dollars. CAB has compiled a Best Practices Manual for cow-calf producers. Available upon request from your Select Sires representative or downloaded from www.CABPartners.com, the manual spells out EPD recommendations for a producer aiming at the CAB target. Select Sires has made this process of choosing sires even simpler by identifying those bulls in the directory that meet or exceed the manual’s recommendations for both Marbling EPD and Angus $ Beef Value. We applaud the industry foresight of Select Sires on seeking out and identifying those bulls that are genetically designed for balance, including the high-quality beef target.

+26 Docility

+26 Docility

The Docility EPD is presented as a percentage. A higher value is more favorable for docile temperament. Since this is a threshold trait, herds that exhibit no problems in temperament will realize no improvement in selecting for favorable docility EPDs. For additional information, go to the web at: www.angus. org/Nce/Research/DocilityResearch.aspx Average Docility EPD is +8, the Heritability for Docility is .37, and the Range for Docility is from -31 to +42.

+13 HP

Heifer Pregnancy EPDs are to be used as a tool to increase the chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant during a normal breeding season. The unit of measure for the EPD is percent. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction for selection pressure. As with other EPDs, the relative difference among sires is of importance rather than the absolute value. For additional information, go to the web at: www.angus.org/Nce/Research/HeiferResearch.aspx Average HP EPD is +8, the Heritability for HP is .13, and the Range for HP is from -4 to +18.

Crossbreeding is Back!

Marty Ropp

Director of Field Services American Simmental Association

After a long hiatus for many in the beef business, crossbreeding is back and why not, it works! Crossbreeding nearly always generates more prot in this business where prot is increasingly hard to come by. The benets in cost reduction and increased production that are possible through the planned use of heterosis are well documented. Most research shows that a crossbred commercial cow will out produce her purebred counterparts by the equivalent of between 1 and 1.5 additional calves over her lifetime. That’s an enormous increase, but the benets that breed complementary bring, also offer substantial added value. Beef breeds that have positioned themselves to thrive in a future dominated by designed crossbreeding systems are those best prepared to move forward and be relevant in a “new,” more cost driven beef business.

Most research concludes that a complimentary combination of Continental and British breeds provide the most value to U.S. beef systems. Years of research and advanced genetic improvement have positioned Simmental genetics as the logical choice for the Continental portion of a value based crossbreeding program. No other continental breed has placed the amount of emphasis and selection pressure on economically important traits both maternal and terminal over the past 15 years. As an additional proof of commitment to protability, all American Simmental commercial programs are designed to promote the value of breed complementarity and hybrid vigor for commercial cattlemen. Commercial beef operations are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the benets of planned crossbreeding. Whether you choose high value purebred Simmental bulls to get the most from your rst cross or choose to use designed SimAngus composites to make crossbreeding systems simple, crossbreeding with Simmental genetics just makes good sense! The 7070 grid program is a good example of an effort that not only encourages crossbreeding, it is nearly dependent on it! The use of highly selected Simmental genetics in combination with high value British breeds is the most predictable way to produce beef that excels both in quality and cutability. A long standing industry goal to produce beef carcasses that are in excess of 70 percent USDA Choice or higher, 70 percent USDA Yield Grades 1 and 2 and thus reduce “out” cattle is the charge behind the 7070 grid program. Out carcasses are Yield Grade 4 or 5, No Rolls, heavy or light weights, hard bones and dark cutters. In other words those cattle receiving signicant value discounts ($80 to $350/per carcass) due to missing beef market target specications. Considering that U.S. beef industry averages just two years ago were 57 percent Choice or higher, 52 percent YG 1 and 2 and more than 22 percent “out” carcasses, achieving 70:70:0 is far from near our grasp. The U.S. beef production system has long differentiated itself in the world market place by providing taste fat (marbling) and thus improved palatability. Our ability to produce relatively cheap ration energy was at the forefront of factors that made this possible. Most industry experts still agree that producing highly marbled beef needs to be a signicant part of the

U.S. beef strategic plan for the future. The other part of the carcass value equation however is changing. We simply can no longer produce obscene quantities of waste fat to satisfy our markets desire for taste fat. Part of the reason that excess fat production is no longer acceptable is that our “relatively cheap ration energy” has become expensive primarily because of policies that put all forms of energy into one global competitive category. Because waste fat is extremely inefcient to produce and expensive to dispose of, this industry must promote strategies to reduce waste fat production and thus substantially reduce costs for all beef business segments. SimAngus cattle offer real solutions for achieving the industry goal of 70:70:0 that’s why the 7070 grid was chosen. After collecting thousands of carcass records on Simmental x Angus and Simmental x Red Angus crossbred steers, and evaluating most of the available packer value based grids, the one that returned the most premium on a combination of high quality and high cutability was 7070. To date, nearly 5,000 sire identied SimAngus steer progeny have been harvested through the ASA’s carcass merit program in addition to more than 2,500 high percent Continental or straight British cattle. As a group, the SimAngus steers most nearly met the 70:70:0 industry goals being 74 percent Choice or higher, 64 YG 1 and 2, with fewer than 4 percent out carcasses. This data represents hundreds of harvest groups, reared, fed and harvested all over the U.S. When the value proposition of a leaner, highly marbled carcass is added to the reduced cost of production associated with producing lean muscle instead of fat, the nal savings to the aggregate beef business can be immense. Currently the 7070 Grid is available only through JBS Swift and Co. plants at Grand Island NE and Greely CO. For more details go to 7070beef. com or by contacting grid manager Mark Guge directly at (515) 231-6849. The use of dollar value Indexes is becoming increasingly important to promote advanced selection while simplifying decision making. American Simmental offers two value index EPDs to promote futuristic selection for protability instead of just selection for independent traits. The All Purpose Index (API) combines all economically important trait EPDs into a single selection tool with dollars of prot as the unit of measurement. This index assumes that producers keep their own replacement females and includes the value of those genetics to the entire beef industry. For those who do not keep replacement females, the Terminal Index (TI) is more appropriate. Obviously it prioritizes growth and carcass traits while the API takes into account the huge importance of maternal value in addition to traits that effect total dollar returns. When you make the choice to crossbreed for greater protability, consider the years of commitment to research and product value improvement that SimGenetics offer your beef business.

The 5 day CO-Synch CIDR Protocolfor forTimed TimedA.I. A.I.ininBeef BeefCattle Cattle Research Update – 5+Day Protocols Dr. Allen Bridges, Assistant Professor, Department of Animal Sciences, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN and Dr. Mike Day, Professor, Department of Animal Sciences, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

Recommended protocol for beef cows: Beef producers now have the ability to breed every female in the herd at a predetermined time through the use of estrous synchronization protocols that accommodate timed A.I. (TAI). Recently, the most widely used TAI protocol has been the 7 day CO-Synch + CIDR. Although acceptable TAI pregnancy rates of 55 percent were achieved with this protocol in Dr. Mike Day a large multistate project, we believed that even greater TAI pregnancy rates were possible given the results of new research on factors influencing fertility in cattle. This led to development of the 5 day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol (Figure 1) for TAI. In a head-to-head comparison, TAI pregnancy rates in beef cows improved from 60 percent with the 7 day protocol to 70 percent using the 5 day CO-Synch + CIDR. Research over the past 5 years, in Ohio, Indiana and Virginia (1,695 cows from 23 herds) resulted in TAI pregnancy rates of 68 percent Dr. Allen Bridges with the 5 day protocol. The 5 day program includes an additional injection of PGF2α (i.e., Lutalyse®), given 8 (± 2) hours after the initial PGF2α at CIDR removal. Therefore, the currently recommended 5 day protocol (Figure 1) requires one additional cattle working and dose of PGF2α to achieve the 10 percent increase in TAI pregnancy rate. Beef producers should consider the value of each A.I. pregnancy, drug and labor costs, and the convenience of the protocol when choosing an appropriate TAI protocol for postpartum beef cows. Current research with the 5 day protocol in cows and heifers: While the recommended protocol (Figure 1) has been adopted by many producers, our current research objective in cows is to eliminate the additional handling associated with the second PGF2α in the 5 day protocol. Our most recent research indicated no difference in TAI pregnancy rate when cows were given two doses of PGF2α at CIDR removal (i.e. a double dose; 70 percent) compared to the recommended protocol (66 percent). This experiment included 436 cows from 5 herds and will be repeated in Fall 2009 and Spring 2010 to confirm these findings. With research support from Select Sires, extensive investigation of the 5 day protocol in yearling beef heifers is ongoing, although this protocol is not currently recommended by the Beef Reproduction Task Force. An experiment using 400 heifers in Ohio and Virginia resulted in TAI pregnancy rates of 60 percent with the 5 day and 50 percent with the 7 day CO-Synch + CIDR protocol.

Our most recent research has concentrated on using the 5 day Select Synch + CIDR and TAI (Figure 2) protocol in replacement heifers. In this approach, heifers in estrus up to 60 hours after CIDR removal are inseminated 12 hours after detection followed by TAI at 72 hours after CIDR removal in heifers not in heat. We recently compared the 5 (365 heifers) and 7 day (296 heifers) Select Synch + CIDR and TAI protocols at 5 locations in Indiana, Utah, and Wyoming. Overall A.I. pregnancy rate (detected estrus + TAI) was 10 percent greater with the 5 versus the 7 day protocol (Table 1). Interestingly, conception rates of heifers detected in estrus were greater with the 5 day program. In this experiment, heifers in the 5 day program received two PGF2α injections approximately 12 hours apart. Our findings, and those in dairy heifers, suggest that beef heifers may require only a single dose of PGF2α, but further research is necessary. Our research suggests that relative to 7 day protocols, improvements similar to those achieved in cows, can be realized in heifers and that the 5 day protocol may represent a viable alternative to some of the longer term protocols for heifers. This research in estrous synchronization has been supported through funding provided by Select Sires Inc., COBA/Select Sires and donations by Pfizer Animal Health, Intervet Schering-Plough Animal Health, and TEVA Animal Health. Additional contributors to this research include Drs. John Hall, Ram Kasimanickam, Dee Whittier, and Scott Lake.

brand of dinoprost tromethamine sterile solution

Caution: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. For intramuscular use for estrus synchronization, treatment of unobserved (silent) estrus and pyometra (chronic endometritis) in cattle; for abortion of feedlot and other non-lactating cattle; for parturition induction in swine; and for controlling the timing of estrus in estrous cycling mares and clinically anestrous mares that have a corpus luteum. INDICatIONs aND INstRuCtIONs FOR use Cattle: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated as a luteolytic agent. LUTALYSE is effective only in those cattle having a corpus luteum, i.e., those which ovulated at least five days prior to treatment. Future reproductive performance of animals that are not cycling will be unaffected by injection of LUTALYSE. 1. For Intramuscular use for estrus synchronization in Beef Cattle and Non-Lactating Dairy Heifers. LUTALYSE is used to control the timing of estrus and ovulation in estrous cycling cattle that have a corpus luteum. Inject a dose of 5 mL LUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly either once or twice at a 10 to 12 day interval. With the single injection, cattle should be bred at the usual time relative to estrus. With the two injections cattle can be bred after the second injection either at the usual time relative to detected estrus or at about 80 hours after the second injection of LUTALYSE. Estrus is expected to occur 1 to 5 days after injection if a corpus luteum was present. Cattle that do not become pregnant to breeding at estrus on days 1 to 5 after injection will be expected to return to estrus in about 18 to 24 days. 2. For Intramuscular use for unobserved (silent) estrus in Lactating Dairy CowswithaCorpusLuteum.Injectadoseof5mLLUTALYSE(25mgPGF2 ) intramuscularly. Breed cows as they are detected in estrus. If estrus has not been observed by 80 hours after injection, breed at 80 hours. If the cow returns to estrus breed at the usual time relative to estrus. Management Considerations: Many factors contribute to success and failure of reproduction management, and these factors are important also when time of breeding is to be regulated with LUTALYSE Sterile Solution. Some of these factors are: a. Cattle must be ready to breed—they must have a corpus luteum and be healthy; b. Nutritional status must be adequate as this has a direct effect on conception and the initiation of estrus in heifers or return of estrous cycles in cows following calving; c. Physical facilities must be adequate to allow cattle handling without being detrimental to the animal; d. Estrus must be detected accurately if timed Al is not employed; e. Semen of high fertility must be used; f. Semen must be inseminated properly. A successful breeding program can employ LUTALYSE effectively, but a poorly managed breeding program will continue to be poor when LUTALYSE is employed unless other management deficiencies are remedied first. Cattle expressing estrus following LUTALYSE are receptive to breeding by a bull. Using bulls to breed large numbers of cattle in heat following LUTALYSE will require proper management of bulls and cattle. 3. For Intramuscular use for treatment of Pyometra (chronic endometritis) in Cattle. Inject a dose of 5 mLLUTALYSE (25 mg PGF2 ) intramuscularly. In studies conducted with LUTALYSE, pyometra was defined as presence of a corpus luteum in the ovary and uterine horns containing fluid but not a conceptus based on palpation per rectum. Return to normal was defined as evacuation of fluid and return of the uterine horn size to 40 mm or less based on palpation per rectum at 14 and 28 days. Most cattle that recovered in response to LUTALYSE recovered within 14 days after injection. After 14 days, recovery rate of treated cattle was no different than that of nontreated cattle.

4. For Intramuscular use for abortion of Feedlot and Other Non-Lactating Cattle. LUTALYSE is indicated for its abortifacient effect in feedlot and other non-lactating cattle during the first 100 days of gestation. Inject a dose of 25 mg intramuscularly. Cattle that abort will abort within 35 days of injection. Commercial cattle were palpated per rectum for pregnancy in six feedlots. The percent of pregnant cattle in each feedlot less than 100 days of gestation ranged between 26 and 84; 80% or more of the pregnant cattle were less than 150 days of gestation. The abortion rates following injection of LUTALYSE increased with increasing doses up to about 25 mg.As examples, the abortion rates, over 7 feedlots on the dose titration study, were 22%, 50%, 71%, 90% and 78% for cattle up to 100 days of gestation when injected IM with LUTALYSE doses of 0,1 (5 mg), 2 (10 mg), 4 (20 mg) and 8 (40 mg) mL, respectively. The statistical predicted relative abortion rate based on the dose titration data, was about 93% for the 5 mL (25 mg) LUTALYSE dose for cattle injected up to 100 days of gestation. swine: For intramuscular use for parturition induction in swine. LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated for parturition induction in swine when injected within 3 days of normal predicted farrowing. The response to treatment varies by individual animals with a mean interval from administration of 2 mL LUTALYSE (10 mg dinoprost) to parturition of approximately 30 hours. This can be employed to control the time of farrowing in sows and gilts in late gestation. Management Considerations: Several factors must be considered for the successful use of LUTALYSE Sterile Solution for parturition induction in swine. The product must be administered at a relatively specific time (treatment earlier than 3 days prior to normal predicted farrowing may result in increased piglet mortality). It is important that adequate records be maintained on (1) the average length of gestation period for the animals on a specific location, and (2) the breeding and projected farrowing dates for each animal. This information is essential to determine the appropriate time for administration of LUTALYSE. Mares: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is indicated for its luteolytic effect in mares. This luteolytic effect can be utilized to control the timing of estrus in estrous cycling and clinically anestrous mares that have a corpus luteum in the following circumstances: 1. Controlling time of estrus of estrous Cycling Mares: Mares treated with LUTALYSE during diestrus (4 or more days after ovulation) will return to estrus within 2 to 4 days in most cases and ovulate 8 to 12 days after treatment. This procedure may be utilized as an aid to scheduling the use of stallions. 2. Difficult-to-Breed Mares: In extended diestrus there is failure to exhibit regular estrous cycles which is different from true anestrus. Many mares described as anestrus during the breeding season have serum progesterone levels consistent with the presence of a functional corpus luteum. Aproportion of “barren”, maiden, and lactating mares do not exhibit regular estrous cycles and may be in extended diestrus. Following abortion, early fetal death and resorption, or as a result of “pseudopregnancy”, there may be serum progesterone levels consistent with a functional corpus luteum. Treatment of such mares with LUTALYSE usually results in regression of the corpus luteum followed by estrus and/or ovulation. In one study with 122 Standardbred and Thoroughbred mares in clinical anestrus for an average of 58 days and treated during the breeding season, behavioral estrus was detected in 81 percent at an average time of 3.7 days after injection with 5 mg LUTALYSE; ovulation occurred an average of 7.0 days after treatment. Of those mares bred, 59% were pregnant following an average of 1.4 services during that estrus. Treatment of “anestrous” mares which abort subsequent to 36 days of pregnancy may not result in return to estrus due to presence of functional endometrial cups.

useR saFety (HuMaN WaRNINGs) Not for human use. Women of childbearing age, asthmatics, and persons with bronchial and other respiratory problems should exercise extreme caution when handling this product. In the early stages, women may be unaware of their pregnancies. Dinoprost tromethamine is readily absorbed through the skin and can cause abortion. Accidental spillage on the skin should be washed off immediately with soap and water.

ResIDue INFORMatION No milk discard or preslaughter drug withdrawal period is required for labeled uses in cattle. No preslaughter drug withdrawal period is required for labeled uses in swine. Use of this product in excess of the approved dose may result in drug residues. Not for horses intended for human consumption. aNIMaL saFety (WaRNINGs) Severe localized clostridial infections associated with injection of LUTALYSE have been reported. In rare instances, such infections have resulted in death. Aggressive antibiotic therapy should be employed at the first sign of infection at the injection site whether localized or diffuse.

PReCautIONs • Do not administer intravenously (I.V.) as this route may potentiate adverse reactions. • No vial stopper should be entered more than 20 times. For this reason, the 100 mL bottle should only be used for cattle. The 30 mL bottle may be used for cattle, swine, or mares. • As with all parenteral products careful aseptic techniques should be used to decrease the possibility of post-injection bacterial infections. The vial stopper should be cleaned and disinfected prior to needle entry. Only sterile needles should be used and the same needle should not be used more than once. • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may inhibit prostaglandin synthesis; therefore this class of drugs should not be administered concurrently. Cattle: Do not administer to pregnant cattle, unless abortion is desired. Cattle administered a progestogen would be expected to have a reduced response to LUTALYSE Sterile Solution. swine: Do not administer to sows and/or gilts prior to 3 days of normal predicted farrowing as an increased number of stillbirths and postnatal mortality may result. Mares: LUTALYSE Sterile Solution is ineffective when administered prior to day-5 after ovulation. Pregnancy status should be determined prior to treatment since LUTALYSE has been reported to induce abortion and parturition when sufficient doses were administered. Mares should not be treated if they suffer from either acute or subacute disorders of the vascular system, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, or reproductive tract. aDVeRse ReaCtIONs Cattle: Limited salivation has been reported in some instances. swine: The most frequently observed side effects were erythema and pruritus, slight incoordination, nesting behavior, itching, urination, defecation, abdominal muscle spasms, tail movements, hyperpnea or dyspnea, increased vocalization, salivation, and at the 100 mg (10X) dose only, possible vomiting. These side effects are transitory, lasting from 10 minutes to 3 hours, and were not detrimental to the health of the animal. Mares:The most frequently observed side effects are sweating and decreased rectal temperature. However, these have been transient in all cases observed and have not been detrimental to the animal. Other reactions seen have been increase in heart rate, increase in respiration rate, some abdominal discomfort, locomotor incoordination, and lying down. These effects are usually seen within 15 minutes of injection and disappear within one hour. Mares usually continue to eat during the period of expression of side effects. One anaphylactic reaction of several hundred mares treated with LUTALYSE Sterile Solution was reported but was not confirmed.

Terminology Using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) is the fastest way to make genetic improvement in beef cattle. Breed associations calculate EPDs using vast amounts of data collected on economically important traits. The power of this data is tremendous. EPD values are derived from: 1. The individual’s own performance record 2. Progeny records 3. Records of other relatives in the pedigree 4. Genetic correlations of traits As progeny records are added to a sire’s record, the accuracy of the EPD increases. EPDs values are not exact and actual progeny differences will vary from the predicted values. Breeders are encouraged to use proven bulls with high accuracies more heavily than young bulls with low accuracies. Although the EPDs reported in sire summaries might vary by breed, most breed associations commonly report these traits: Calving Ease Birth Weight Weaning Weight Yearling Weight Scrotal Circumference Milk Carcass Traits EPD - Expected Progeny Difference - The expected difference in performance of an animal’s progeny compared to the expected performance of another’s progeny. EPDs are meaningless until they are compared to EPDs of another animal. For example, if Sire A has a birth weight EPD of 4.0 and Sire B has a birth weight EPD of -2.0, then calves from Sire B would be expected to average 6 pounds lighter at birth than calves from Sire A if the bulls are randomly mated in the same herd. EPDs are designed to compare sires within the same breed. Acc. - Accuracy - A measure of reliability of an EPD expressed between 0 and 1.0. Accuracies closer to 1.0 means the EPD is a more reliable estimate of a sire’s true genetic value for the trait. % Rank - Based on percentages, this indicates where an EPD ranks in the breed population. CED or CE - Calving Ease Direct is the difference in percentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred to heifers. A higher number is desirable. BW - Birth Weight EPD predicts the difference in average birth weight. Reported in pounds, a lower number is desirable and is associated with increased calving ease. WW - Weaning Weight EPD predicts the difference in average 205-day weight. Reported in pounds, a higher

number is desirable. YW - Yearling Weight EPD predicts the difference in average 365-day weight and is reported in pounds. YH - Yearling Height (Angus) - The YH EPD predicts the difference in yearling hip height. Reported in inches, ideal values vary depending on production goals and desired mature size of animals. SC - Scrotal Circumference - The SC EPD predicts the difference in yearling scrotal circumference of a bull’s male progeny. Reported in centimeters, a larger number is desirable. CEM or MCE - Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births of a sire’s daughters as first-calf heifers. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable. Milk - The milk EPD predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves. Reported in pounds, ideal milk values depend heavily upon the nutritional environment of the herd. MWW - Maternal Weaning Weight (Simmental); M&G - Milk and Growth (Hereford); TM - Total Maternal (Red Angus) - The EPD predicts the Weaning Weight of a bull’s daughters’ progeny and reflects both the milking ability of a bull’s daughters and the growth potential of their calves. Reported in pounds, higher numbers are generally desirable. $EN - Cow Energy Value (Angus), expressed in dollars saved per cow per year, the EPD assesses differences in cow energy requirements for daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $EN savings differences account for lactation energy requirements and mature size of cows. Stay - Stayability (Red Angus & Simmental) - The stayability EPD predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters staying in production to at least six years of age. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable. Carcass Traits -Carcass EPDs are calculated for carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area and fat thickness using weighted averages of yearling ultrasounds and progeny carcass data. Economic Indexes - designed to exploit the value and convenience of multi-trait selection, economic indexes merge several EPDs into a single value and are expressed in US dollars. Several breeds publish economic indexes that are often associated with a specific phase of production or a suite of traits for which the breed excels. Examples include growth, maternal ability, carcass merit and combinations of these.

2009 Across-Breed EPD Comparison The across-breed EPD table is used to compare different breeds of bulls on the same scale by using adjustment factors. These factors reflect both the current breed difference and differences in the breed base point. With these factors, producers can estimate how different bull’s growth traits, maternal milk traits, and carcass traits compare from breed to breed. The across-breed EPD is useful for commercial producers using cross-breeding programs. However, these factors should not be used to directly compare breeds, but rather compare EPDs from breed to breed.
