Fellow Cattlemen, It is with great excitement that we bring you the 2012 Select Sires Beef Sire Directory. We are honored to present you with an exciting blend of proven sires that have become trusted household names, rising stars that are proving their worth with each additional progeny record, and a set of the most elite and highly recruited young sires in AI. Every bull in this book has a unique story of performance, individuality and quality that place him in elite company and truly make him a “Select Sire.” Our team goes to great lengths to ensure that no stone is left unturned in the process of evaluating a bull for our program. We believe in selecting bulls from reputable breeders with reliable data reporting and a history of producing cattle that excel for customer satisfaction. We believe modern AI sires should do many things well and we are committed to delivering on our promise of Calving Ease, Carcass and Cows. We enjoy doing business with all types of breeders, but we believe that our success is ultimately dependent on the success of the commercial cattleman. That’s why traits like calving ease and docility are primary considerations in our evaluation of potential sires. At Select Sires, we are proud of our legacy of sires that excel for end product merit and we plan to continue this focus. We believe producers of high quality cattle have more opportunity to reap the rewards of their efforts now more than ever. The Select Sires beef team is deeply rooted in the beef industry and most of us have cattle of our own. We appreciate the value of traits like longevity, structure, fertility, fleshing ability and udder quality. That’s why cow families and maternal quality are scrutinized heavily in our search for young sires. Bottom line…Select Sires has assembled a lineup of sires with an unparalleled blend of traits necessary for your success. At Select Sires we are very proud of the bulls we offer, but we are equally proud of the people who wear our brand. Whether it is your local sales representative or the beef specialist in your area, there is a beef expert waiting to assist you with sales and services such as mating decisions, estrus synchronization, calf marketing and other opportunities to improve your cow herd. On the next page you will find a listing of Beef Specialists who are especially interested and informed in the beef program and can assist you with any question or need. At Select Sires, we take the responsibility of being your beef genetics supplier very seriously and believe it a privilege to be part of your success. We wish you a prosperous 2012 and thank you for your business. Sincerely,
Brian House Vice President, Beef Program

Angus 7
Those of you who have been breeding cattle for a decade or more know the progress in carcass merit genetics in the last few years has been outstanding. Much of that credit belongs to the dedication of Select Sires staff and customers – which is one reason we at Certified Angus Beef LLC are proud to be a part of this Select Sires beef directory. We’re confident that 2012 will be an exciting and positive time for your business.
Mark A. McCully
Assistant Vice President, Production Certified Angus Beef LLC
Just six or seven years ago, the percent of Angus-type cattle meeting Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand specifications was at an all-time low and had been trending lower. Angus breeders were already selecting for more marbling (the main reason cattle fail to qualify for the brand) and commercial customers were starting to demand and use those bulls that improve the consumer’s eating experience. But the resulting fed-cattle harvest just wasn’t showing the progress. It was a frustrating time.
I remember sitting next to Roy Wallace of Select Sires on a flight to a Beef Improvement Federation meeting in the summer of 2004. I had all my charts out, showing him the decline in quality grade, and I was challenging Roy to explain why we hadn’t seen any progress in marbling given the focus on that trait, within the Angus breed in particular. “It’s simple,” he said. “Genetic selection is slow and it is going to take several more years before we see any change.” Well, of course we all know the biological facts, but how often do we project that onto the whole beef-cattle industry? Genetic progress is truly slow. But it is sure. Today we have a very different outlook on supply at CAB, at least for now. Those all-time low acceptance rates of 14% in 2006 improved to 24% for 2011 after a five-year upswing. Are we there yet? Not hardly, as John Wayne used to say. Consumers want more of the best. Research has shown there is simply no reason to back away from the inclusion of relatively higher Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) for marbling in bull selection. Correlations to maternal, growth and efficiency are all neutral to friendly, and the 2011 widening of the Choice/Select boxed-beef spread proves the market will pay you for better cattle. In fact, considering the price of both cattle and inputs, the value of outstanding genetics is at an all-time high. Ten years ago an extra 25 pounds of weaning weight was worth $20. Now it’s twice that. Moreover, the difference in value between low-end and genetically improved cattle only grows at the feedlot and packing plant. An 800-pound carcass grading Prime is worth $450 more than the next one of that weight grading Standard. AI technology has advanced, both in effective protocol and ease of use through networks of available technicians, to the point where thousands more producers are turning to its advantages now. The payoff in predictable replacement heifers and feedlot steers comes along soon enough, even for those of us who can be impatient. We try to help guide producers toward profitable quality with the CAB Best Practices Manual, which includes EPD recommendations, and we are very pleased that Select Sires has again made use of the reference. In this directory, next to those Angus sires that meet or exceed our EPD suggestions, you will see a “Targeting the Brand” logo, thus further pointing the way to genetic progress. The result of all the hard work of on-target breeding pays off when the consumer goes to the meat case or restaurant and pays a premium for a great beef eating experience. That’s good for Angus breeders, both seedstock and commercial, and for the entire beef industry. For more information on the CAB program or the CAB Best Practices Manual, please visit www.CABpartners.com or call (330) 345-2333.

DNA Technology for Seedstock Producers By Jennifer Minick Bormann Kansas State University We are in the middle of perhaps the most exciting time in beef cattle genetics since the development of EPD 30 years ago. Information directly from DNA has long had the potential to revolutionize cattle breeding, but only very recently has it begun to be incorporated in a way that can influence selection decisions on a large scale. To understand the contribution of genomics information, it’s important to review. Any data we collect on an animal (birth E weight, marbling score, scrotal G circumference, etc.) is made up M of two main components: genetics and environment (G and E in Figure 1). In other words, some of what makes an animal Figure 1. Proportion of phenotypic variation made up good or bad for a given trait is of environmental variance (E), due to the animal’s genetics and additive genetic variance (G), some is due to its environment. and molecular information (M) The environmental portion is for early genomic tests. not passed on, so our goal is to determine how much of that animal’s ‘goodness’ or ‘badness’ for the trait is due to its additive genetics. As breeders, we really only care about the purple part of the chart in Figure 1. Unfortunately, we can never know exactly an animal’s genetic merit. We have to estimate it based on all the data available. The EPD is our best estimate of an animal’s genetic merit and it is based on performance data collected on the animal itself, its relatives and its progeny. The accuracy associated with the EPD is determined by the amount and type of data available. If there are hundreds of progeny records on a bull, his EPD will be estimated with very high accuracy. In other words, we are confident that his EPD is very close to his actual genetic merit. If there is very little information available on a bull, the EPD is still our best estimate of his genetic merit, but we are not as confident that it is very close to his actual genetic merit. That is reflected in his lower accuracy value. A high accuracy EPD is the gold standard as a prediction of genetic merit. There is no better way to know what kind of progeny a bull will produce. Phenotype
The biggest limitation to obtaining high accuracy EPD is the amount of progeny needed to get there. Depending on the trait, this can be very costly. If you have scales, the cost of collecting birth or weaning weights may be negligible. However, some data (carcass, ultrasound, feed intake, etc.) can be very expensive. From a genetic improvement standpoint, the time lag is costly as well. It takes many years for a bull to get high accuracy EPD, which slows the rate of genetic improvement. The billion dollar question posed by developing DNA technology is: Can we bypass the time and expense of collecting a lot of data and go directly to the DNA to learn about an animal’s genetic merit? Early efforts to use DNA in beef cattle selection involved tests for one or two genes. The amount of genetic variation explained by the gene test is represented by the red circle in Figure 1. The first generation of genetic tests explained very little of an animal’s genetic merit for the trait; the red circle was very small. Whether an animal had the correct genotype for a trait as determined by the gene test really had very little
20
to do with his overall genetic merit for that trait (which is predicted by the EPD). This also led to the confusing situation where bulls had gene test results as well as EPD. Over the last fifteen years, scientists have identified thousands of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the bovine genome. These are places in the DNA that are different between animals. Some of these SNPs are in genes and cause differences in the traits we care about. Many of them are in parts of the genome that don’t have any function, but they may be close to genes that have important effects. High density SNP chips were developed that can test for tens of thousands of SNPs at one time. One commonly used bovine SNP chip tests for over 50,000 SNPs at once. By comparing animals’ genotypes at the SNPs with their phenotypes or EPD for important traits, we can figure out which SNPs are related to which traits, and how much variation they control. Then future animals can be genotyped for the important SNPs (usually not all of them) and equations developed from the previous data can be used to predict those animals’ genetic merit. Figuring out the relationships between the SNPs and the important traits and developing the equations takes very large data sets of animals that have both genotypes on the chip and phenotypes or high accuracy breeding values. Both Igenity® and Pfizer offer tests that use panels of SNPs to predict an animal’s genomic or molecular breeding value. Igenity® calls this value the Profile, and Pfizer uses Molecular Value Prediction (MVP®). These panels are only predicting part of the animal’s genetic merit. Depending on the panel and the trait, the molecular breeding values are explaining between about 5-35% of the genetic variation. Figure 2 shows the current scenario, where some of genomic tests are predicting over Phenotype a third of the genetic variation in Angus cattle. Remember, the EPD is predicting 100% of the geE netic variation, with variable accuracy. These marker panels that G result in a molecular breeding M value represent a large improvement over single or a few gene tests, as shown in Figures 1 and Figure 2. Proportion of 2. However, until recently, we phenotypic variation made up of environmental variance were still in the situation where (E), additive genetic variance some animals had EPD and mo(G), and molecular informalecular breeding values. tion (M) for some current genomic tests.
The academic community has agreed for many years that the best way to use genomic information was to incorporate it into existing national genetic evaluation. The statistical methodology to do that was developed in the past 3-4 years. In 2009, the American Angus Association incorporated Igenity ® Profile results into its carcass evaluation (CW, Marb, RE, and Fat). They have since added Profile information to evaluations of CED, the growth traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), docility, RADG, SC, YH, and MW, as well as included Pfizer information into the above evaluations. This is a huge milestone, because all possible information on an animal (pedigree, own records, sibs, progeny, genomics) is being used to get the most accurate EPD. The DNA panels and the equations to incorporate the results into genetic evaluation are breed-dependent and need to be developed within breeds. Large numbers of animals with DNA information and phenotypes or high accuracy EPD are needed. At this point, no other breeds have genomic information incorporated into their genetic evaluations, but
many other breeds are working towards that goal. The breeds that are closest at this point in time are Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental, followed by Maine-Anjou and Chianina. So what is the value of adding the molecular information into the EPD? The simple answer is accuracy. DNA can be sampled on the day a calf is born, adding information into its EPD without waiting for its own or progeny records. Dr. Sally Northcutt, director of genetic research for the American Angus Association, provided these examples at the Beef Improvement Federation annual meeting in June 2010. For an Angus calf with no ultrasound record, its parental average EPD has a default accuracy of 0.05. By adding that calf’s genomic information to the carcass trait evaluation, the accuracy of that EPD increases to 0.28-0.38 depending on which trait. An Angus cow that has her own ultrasound record and 11 ultrasound scanned progeny has a marbling EPD with accuracy 0.25. By adding her genomic information, the accuracy increases to 0.37. One common misconception is that the EPD goes up by adding genomic information. Think of genomic testing like adding any new piece of information. If you have a group of calves with similar parental average EPD, you expect those EPD to change when you record their own performance and include that information into their EPD. On average, half the calves’ EPD will go up and half will go down. If you progeny test a group of bulls, the same thing happens. About half the bulls turn out better than their non-parent EPD predicted, and about half are worse. Genomic information is the same thing. About half the animals’ EPD will increase and about half will decrease when genomic information is added. However the accuracy always goes up when information is added. If genomic results are incorporated into the genetic evaluation, the actual test results should be ignored in favor of selecting on the EPD. It’s just like using actual weights. If a weight is included in the EPD calculation, ignore the actual weight and use the EPD. The genomic information is part of the EPD and shouldn’t be counted twice. There are many ways a producer may decide to use genomics. Some people are testing all sale bulls prior to bull sale season. This increases accuracy on all bulls and gives commercial customers more confidence in the young bulls they buy. However, producers that test their sale bulls must remember that half the time, the EPD will go up and half will go down. Some bulls may go down enough to become worth much less at sale time. However, some will move up and there is always a chance of identifying the next potential star! A young bull’s marbling EPD may go down, but his growth EPD could go up. Another intriguing possibility is testing of replacement heifers. Traditionally, very little genetic progress can be made through heifer selection, partly because of low accuracy of selection. However, with genomic testing of heifers, accuracy can be increased and rate of genetic progress improved. Just as with bulls, potential donor females may be identified earlier, allowing more progeny over that female’s lifetime. Genomic testing is not helpful for high accuracy animals. A high accuracy (progeny-proven) EPD is the gold standard. Adding genomic test data doesn’t provide any more information about the animal’s genetic merit. However, if your breed is working to develop genomically-enhanced EPD, testing of high accuracy sires can be very helpful in this process. One common question breeders ask is, “Which company’s test should I use?” Each test gives a different amount of information for each trait. Table 1 shows the percentage of additive
genetic variance explained by the genomic test. The additive genetic variance is the proportion of the total phenotypic (measured) variance that will be passed from parent to offspring. This is the value that is predicted by the EPD. Genomic tests don’t predict all of the genetic merit of an animal, just a portion of it. The numbers in the %VA column are the size of the red circles in Figures 1 and 2. If we look at the first trait of CED: the Igenity® Profile result describes 22% of the additive genetic variance, and the Pfizer MVP® describes 11%. So if calving ease direct was the only trait you were concerned with, the Igenity® test would contribute more accuracy to your bull’s EPD than the Pfizer test. However, if dry matter intake, which is used to calculate RADG, was a trait that was more important to you, then the Pfizer test would be more informative (42% of variation compared to 20% for Igenity®). So the answer to the question depends on which traits are included in your breeding objective. Decide which traits are most important to your bottom line, and choose the test that describes the most variation in those traits. One note of caution: Early proponents of DNA technology predicted that soon we would be able to collect a blood sample on every calf and never have to record another piece of data. We are a very long way from that. Continuing to collect performance data on as many animals as possible will allow better panels to be developed and will help to improve the equations used to predict molecular breeding values. More importantly, we still need performance data and pedigrees to predict that part of genetic merit not accounted for by the genomic test –the purple area not covered by red in Figure 2. Tremendous strides in the utilization of DNA technology in the beef industry have been made in the last five years. Along with performance data, DNA test results are one more piece of information that contributes to our understanding of an animal’s genetic merit. By utilizing DNA testing, producers are able to make selection decisions on young animals with more confidence than ever before, increasing overall genetic improvement in their herd. Table 1. Dam of Double Down
u A Carcass Standout from a Legendary Program u A High-Demand ‘Outlier’ on Paper and on Hoof When you think about the ideal Simmental bull, many things about Double Down come to mind. He is the product of decades of focused selection for performance and end product merit by one of the most respected herds in the breed. His dam is a proven cow whose mass and substance is complimented by her femininity. Double Down ratioed 151 for IMF against contemporaries with pedigrees stacked for carcass traits. He is a medium framed bull with excellent foot shape, sound movement, plenty of muscle expression and a gentle disposition. Ranking in the top 2% of the breed for API and top 1% for TI, Double Down is a modern marvel that is a complete outcross to Dream On and Legacy.

“In my 40+ years of raising Simmental cattle, I have had the privilege of producing and/or owning numerous great Simmental bulls, several of which have lead the breed in registrations for multiple years. I can honestly make the comment that I have never been involved with a Purebred Simmental bull more impressive than ‘Raisin Cain’.”

From Larson Red Angus, MT
Sun King is certainly ‘royalty’ in our growing line-up of Red Angus bulls. Stemming from a tremendous pedigree that is filled with exciting breed leaders, he is as impressive on paper as he is in the flesh. Quite the spread bull; he ratioed 98 for BW, 110 at Weaning and 104 at Yearling in a pen full of high performers. His dam is a super deep, wide based, bold sprung, yet feminine cow that produces great ones every year. A supreme young sire from a program that is designed with performance, phenotype, and integrity in mind. Dam, Larson Red Angus, MT

A.I. Technique in Cattle Mel DeJarnette, Senior Reproductive Specialist and Dr. Ray Nebel, Vice President of Technical Service Programs
Because the rumen displaces the reproductive tract to the right, it is much easier to locate and manipulate the tract with your left hand.
The cervix is located on the floor of the pelvic cavity near the anterior end of the pelvic bone.
As you insert the breeding gun into the vagina, keep your gloved hand even with the gun tip.
Keep your open hand flat against the floor of the rectum, allowing manure to pass over the top of your hand and arm.
Grasp the external opening to the cervix with the thumb on top and the forefingers underneath to close the fornix and guide the gun tip into the cervix.
60 A.I. Technique
The recto-vaginal technique is the most commonly used method to artificially inseminate cattle. The basic skills required to perform this technique can be obtained with about three days practice under professional instruction and supervision. Additional proficiency and confidence will be achieved with further work on your own. Regardless of whether you are left or right handed, it is recommended that you use your left hand in the rectum to manipulate the reproductive tract and the right hand to manipulate the insemination gun. This is because the rumen or stomach of the cow lies on the left side of the abdominal cavity, displacing the reproductive tract slightly to the right. Thus, you will find it much easier to locate and manipulate the tract with your left as opposed to right hand. Raise the tail with your right hand and gently massage the rectum with the lubricated glove on your left hand. Place the tail on the left side of your left forearm so it will not interfere with the insemination process. With your fingers together in a pointed fashion, insert your hand in the rectum, up to your wrist. Gently wipe the vulva with a paper towel to remove excess manure and debris. Be careful not to apply excessive pressure, which may smear or push manure into the vulva and vagina. With your left hand make a fist and press down directly on top of the vulva. This will spread the vulva lips allowing clear access to insert the gun tip several inches into the vagina before contacting the vaginal walls. Insert the gun at a 30º upward angle to avoid entering the urethral opening and bladder located on the floor of the vagina. With the gun about 6 to 8 inches inside the vagina, raise the rear of the gun to a somewhat level position and slide it forward until it contacts the external portion of the cervix. You will note a distinct gristly sensation on the gun when it contacts the end of the cervix. The cervix, consists of dense connective tissue and muscle and is your primary landmark for inseminating cattle. It has often been described as having the size and consistency of a turkey neck. The size will vary, with post partum interval and age of the animal. The cervix usually has three or four annular rings or folds. The opening into the cervix protrudes back into the vagina. This forms a 360º blind-ended pocket completely around the cervical opening. This pocket is referred to as the fornix. In most cows, the cervix will be located on the floor of the pelvic cavity near the anterior end of the pelvic bone. In older cows with large reproductive tracts, the cervix may rest slightly over the pelvic bone and down into the abdominal cavity. To become a successful inseminator it is very important that you always know where the tip of the insemination gun is located. The walls of the vagina consist of thin-layered muscle and loose connective tissue. The insemination gun can be easily felt with your palpating hand. As you insert the breeding gun into the vagina, keep your gloved hand even with the gun tip. Manure in the rectum can often interfere with your ability to palpate the cervix and gun tip. However, it is seldom necessary to remove all the manure from the bowel. Instead, keep your open hand flat against the floor of the rectum, allowing the manure to pass over the top of your hand and arm. While handling the cervix you may notice rectal constriction rings attempting to force your arm from the cow. To relax these rings, place two fingers through the center of a ring and massage back and forth. The constriction ring will eventually relax, pass over your hand and arm, and you can continue the palpation process. Because the reproductive tract is freely movable, cows that have strong rectal and abdominal contractions in response to being palpated may actually push their reproductive tract back into the pelvic cavity. This will cause many folds to form in the vagina. In such cases, the insemination gun will often get caught in these folds and little or no progress will be made until they are removed. If you can locate the cervix, grasp it and push it forward. This will straighten the vagina and the gun should pass freely up to the cervix. If you cannot locate the cervix, encircle the gun tip with your thumb and forefingers. With a straightening motion of your wrist, gently “milk” the folds out of the vagina a little at a time. Slide the gun forward and repeat the process until the cervix is reached.
Using the flexibility of your wrist, twist and bend the cervix until you feel the second ring slide over the gun tip.
Use your index finger to check gun placement (1/4 inch past the end of the cervix) before depositing semen.
At this point it is important for you to understand that inseminating a cow is a two-step process. The first step is to get the gun tip to the cervix. To accomplish this you must work the vagina and cervix forward, away from you to straighten the vaginal folds. If you do not feel the gristly sensation of the cervix on the gun, you are still in step one of the process. Once the gun is in contact with the external surface of the cervix you are ready to begin step 2. In step 2, you place the cervix on or over the insemination gun. That’s right, the cervix is placed on the gun, the gun is not passed through the cervix. Excessive movement or probing with the insemination gun during the second step is very often counterproductive. Ground gained is often lost and we find ourselves back in a vaginal fold. The key to mastering step 2 of the insemination process is to know how to hold and manipulate the cervix and concentrating on doing the work with the hand inside the cow, not the one holding the gun. When the gun first contacts the cervix, you will usually find that the tip is in the fornix directly over top of the opening. Grasp the external opening to the cervix with the thumb on top and forefingers underneath. This closes the fornix at top and bottom. As in step 1 we must still know the location of the gun tip. This is accomplished with the palm and third and fourth fingers of your palpating hand. Use your palm and these two fingers to guide the gun tip to the cervical opening located between your thumb and forefingers. With gentle probing the opening should be located. You will feel the gun slide forward until it contacts the second cervical ring. Maintain gentle but steady forward pressure on the gun and slide your thumb and forefingers just in front of the gun tip and re-grasp the cervix. Because the cervix is composed of dense connective tissue and muscle, it is difficult to clearly distinguish the gun tip when it is located within this structure. However, you can determine the approximate location by bending the cervix. Using the flexibility of your wrist, twist and bend the cervix until you feel the second ring slide over the gun tip. Repeat the process until all the rings have been passed over the gun tip. In some cases, it may be necessary to bend the cervix at a 90º angle to clear the cervical folds. Remember, you are placing the cervix over the gun, not the gun through the cervix. A slight jiggle or “give-and-go” of the gun may sometimes be necessary to help pass by a fold, but for the most part gentle forward pressure is all that is necessary and gun movement should be minimal. When all rings of the cervix have been cleared, the gun should slide forward freely with little resistance. Since the uterine wall is very thin, you will once again be able to clearly feel the insemination gun. You are now ready to check your placement and deposit the semen. Rotate your gloved hand until it lies on top of the cervix. With your index finger, locate the far end of the cervix. Pull back on the gun until you feel the tip directly underneath your finger near the internal opening of the cervix. Raise your finger and slowly deposit the semen. Push the plunger slowly so that drops of semen fall directly into the uterine body. With proper A.I. technique and gun placement, semen will be deposited in the uterine body. Uterine contractions will then transport spermatozoa forward to the horns and oviducts with a good distribution of both sides. When the insemination gun is more than 1” through the cervix, all the semen will be deposited in only one horn. This creates a situation of uneven semen distribution. Should the animal ovulate from the opposite horn, conception rates may be compromised. Be sure to raise your finger after checking gun placement. Not doing so may obstruct one horn, again creating a situation of uneven semen distribution. When checking gun tip placement, be careful not to apply excessive pressure. The delicate uterine lining is easily damaged, predisposing the cow to uterine infections and reduced fertility. Make sure you push in with the plunger and do not pull back on the gun. Pulling back may result in much of the semen dose being deposited in the cervix and vagina instead of the uterine body. Although the recommended site of semen deposition is in the uterine body, research suggests that when exact gun tip placement is in doubt, depositing semen slightly into one uterine horn is less likely to compromise fertility than cervical deposition. After properly depositing semen, slowly pull the gun from the reproductive tract. Remove the gloved hand from the rectum and shake off the excess manure. Check the gun tip for signs of blood, infection or semen leakage inside the sheath. Make notes for your veterinarian or future reference where appropriate. Remove the sheath from the gun and hold it in the gloved hand. For the final time, check to confirm which bull you have used. Remove the glove starting at the top of your arm by turning it inside out as you remove it. Wipe the gun clean and dry and return it to the proper storage location. Some of the most important aspects to remember when inseminating a cow to attain maximum breeding efficiency are: • Be gentle. Don’t use too much force. • Insemination is a two-step process. Get the gun to the cervix, and then place the cervix over the gun. • Deposit the semen just through the cervix into the uterine body. Correct insemination procedures will result in better breeding efficiencies. More selection pressure can then be placed on economic traits enabling you and your family to realize a higher return on your semen investment dollars. For more information about A.I. training classes, contact your Select Sires representative.

Proper semen handling is essential to maintain optimum reproductive performance of your A.I. breeding program. To maintain the high quality of semen you purchased from your Select Sires representative, you must pay strict attention to the many details of semen handling outlined in this article.
STRAW RETRIEVAL AND THAWING
• Avoid raising straws above the frost line. (1) • On new canes, bend the identification tab up to a 45º angle. (2) • Use the forceps to remove one straw at a time from the top. If it takes more than 10 seconds to retrieve the straw, lower the canister back into the tank and allow to re-cool for 20 to 30 seconds. (3) • Shake the straw gently to remove excess liquid nitrogen and promptly place in 95º F (35º C) water to thaw for at least 45 seconds. Thaw only as many straws as you can use in 10 to 15 minutes. When multiple straws are thawed, do not allow direct contact during thawing process. (4) • To retrieve straws from the bottom goblet, grasp the cane and raise it until the straws are even with other cane tops. Hold the cane and canister with one hand. With your forceps in the other hand, remove the desired straw and place it in the thaw water. (5)

LOADING THE INSEMINATION GUN
• Before loading the insemination gun, pre-warm the barrel by stroking it vigorously with your hand five or six times. • Make sure the plunger is back about six inches to allow for insertion of the straw. • Remove the straw from the thaw water and wipe it completely dry with a paper towel. • Check to see that the straw contains semen from the desired bull and that a small bubble is at the crimped end. • If the bubble is not at the crimped end, gently tap the straw until the bubble moves to its correct position. • Place the cotton plug end of the straw in the gun. It will stop at exactly the right depth. • Wipe the scissors with a paper towel and cut the straw at a right angle ¼" below the lab seal. (6) • Slide the plastic sheath over the straw and gun and firmly attach the sheath and gun together. (7 and 8) • Inspect the straw end of the gun to ensure a proper seal between sheath and straw. (9) • Wrap loaded guns in a paper towel or in a plastic sheath cover to provide both thermal and hygienic protection and place inside your clothing for transport to the cow. (10)

ACCURATE DATA REVEALS THE TRUE VALUE OF YOUR CATTLE
WHAT MEMBERS & ASSOCIATES OF THE BEEF CONNECTION SAY
Producers in The Beef Connection’s Elite Producer Program are learning the true value of their animals and improving the overall quality of their herds. How? By using accurate data, including feed performance and carcass quality, to build better cattle, develop higher quality herds, and create superior heifer replacements.
I joined The Beef Connection 3 years ago and by following their program of AI breeding, quality sires, and proper nutrition had my best results ever this year. The majority of my cattle exceeded the industry standards for feed performance and met the Certified Angus Beef requirement for an excellent payoff.
Of course, these data – as important as they are – are the end result of a program that includes: • Using superior genetics through AI from proven sources such as Select Sires to build better herds. • Properly feeding these genetically superior offspring for maximum results, and supplementing the feed with The Beef Connection Nutritional Pack powered by Alltech Beef Advantage, to optimize both animal health and feed-to-gain performance. • Preparing an individualized marketing plan based on careful market analysis by The Beef Connection that considers your personal goals, to get the best price for your high performing cattle. • Maintaining accurate Age & Source Verification records that we connect to feed performance and harvest data. This creates a powerful database that helps build more efficient herds, cycle after cycle. To learn more, call 502-347-5050 or visit www.thebeefconnection.com. Until next time,

Mature Mature bull weight1 cow weight2
At 12 months, bulls weigh 50 to 60% of this mature weight, under most development programs. Moderate body fatness, cow Body Condition Score 5 (where 1 = extremely thin and 9 = obese; cow weight varies 7% to 8% per condition score and up to 10% for extremes in muscling). For breeding at 14 to 15 months, heifers should weigh 60 to 65% of this mature weight.

Terminology Using Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) is the fastest way to make genetic improvement in beef cattle. Breed associations calculate EPDs using vast amounts of data collected on economically important traits. The power of this data is tremendous. EPD values are derived from: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
The individual’s own performance record Genomic predictions Progeny records Records of other relatives in the pedigree Genetic correlations of traits
As progeny records are added to a sire’s record, the accuracy of the EPD increases. EPDs values are not exact and actual progeny differences will vary from the predicted values. Breeders are encouraged to use proven bulls with high accuracies more heavily than young bulls with low accuracies. Although the EPDs reported in sire summaries might vary by breed, most breed associations commonly report these traits: Calving Ease Birth Weight Weaning Weight Yearling Weight Scrotal Circumference Milk Carcass Traits EPD - Expected Progeny Difference - The expected difference in performance of an animal’s progeny compared to the expected performance of another’s progeny. EPDs are meaningless until they are compared to EPDs of another animal. For example, if Sire A has a birth weight EPD of 4.0 and Sire B has a birth weight EPD of -2.0, then calves from Sire B would be expected to average 6 pounds lighter at birth than calves from Sire A if the bulls are randomly mated in the same herd. EPDs are designed to compare sires within the same breed. Acc. - Accuracy - A measure of reliability of an EPD expressed between 0 and 1.0. Accuracies closer to 1.0 means the EPD is a more reliable estimate of a sire’s true genetic value for the trait. % Rank - Based on percentages, this indicates where an EPD ranks in the breed population. CED or CE - Calving Ease Direct is the difference in percentage of unassisted births when a sire is bred to heifers. A higher number is desirable. BW - Birth Weight EPD predicts the difference in average birth weight. Reported in pounds, a lower number is desirable and is associated with increased calving ease. WW - Weaning Weight EPD predicts the difference in average 205-day weight. Reported in pounds, a higher number is desirable. YW - Yearling Weight EPD predicts the difference in average 365-day weight and is reported in pounds. RADG - Residual Average Daily Gain expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postwean-
ing gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. YH - Yearling Height (Angus) - The YH EPD predicts the difference in yearling hip height. Reported in inches, ideal values vary depending on production goals and desired mature size of animals. SC - Scrotal Circumference - The SC EPD predicts the difference in yearling scrotal circumference of a bull’s male progeny. Reported in centimeters, a larger number is desirable. DOC - Docility is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized. CEM or MCE - Calving Ease Maternal is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births of a sire’s daughters as first-calf heifers. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable. Milk - The milk EPD predicts the difference in average 205day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves. Reported in pounds, ideal milk values depend heavily upon the nutritional environment of the herd. MWW - Maternal Weaning Weight (Simmental); M&G - Milk and Growth (Hereford); TM - Total Maternal (Red Angus) - The EPD predicts the Weaning Weight of a bull’s daughters’ progeny and reflects both the milking ability of a bull’s daughters and the growth potential of their calves. Reported in pounds, higher numbers are generally desirable. $EN - Cow Energy Value (Angus), expressed in dollars saved per cow per year, the EPD assesses differences in cow energy requirements for daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). $EN savings differences account for lactation energy requirements and mature size of cows. Stay - Stayability (Red Angus & Simmental) - The stayability EPD predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters staying in production to at least six years of age. Reported as a percentage, a higher value is desirable. Carcass Traits - Carcass EPDs are calculated for carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area and fat thickness using weighted averages of yearling ultrasounds, progeny carcass data and genomic profiles. Economic Indexes - designed to exploit the value and convenience of multi-trait selection, economic indexes merge several EPDs into a single value and are expressed in US dollars. Several breeds publish economic indexes that are often associated with a specific phase of production or a suite of traits for which the breed excels. Examples include growth, maternal ability, carcass merit and combinations of these.

Visit us on the web at www.selectsiresbeef.com Ways to Order Select Sires Beef Semen:
1. Contact your local Select Sires representative. To find a representative in your area, see the back cover of this directory. 2. Order online at www.selectsiresbeef.com To order A.I. Certificates, contact your Select Sires member cooperative listed on the back cover of this directory. YSP-II Sire Sampling Program The YSP-II program allows breeders access to young sires at 50% of their current retail price and subsequently generates higher accuracies on these bulls in a shorter period of time. Participating herds must submit performance data to their respective breed association. A maximum of 20 units per bull per breeder can be used with no limit on the number of bulls. For breeds that require them, A.I. certificates must be purchased at cost. Cooperators sign a YSP-II agreement that is returned to Select Sires. Young sires in the directory that are available for 2011 are designated with a YSP-II logo on their picture: Photo Requests To request a sire photo be e-mailed to you or to submit progeny photos, contact Cami Collingwood at ccollingwood@selectsires.com or 614-733-3426. PROFIT-A-BULL In the Angus breed, the $Weaning and $Beef indexes are two primary selection criteria we use at Select Sires. Bulls that excel for $W have advantages for calving ease, weaning growth, milk and under control mature size. Bulls that excel for $B have advantages for post-weaning growth and carcass merit. Bulls that carry the PROFIT-A-BULL logo are in the top 10% of the breed or better for both $W and $B. PROFIT-A-BULLs are particularly valuable as they add value throughout the entire beef production chain, benefiting cow/calf producers, feeders, processors and consumers.
