Change is Good! The Select Sires Beef Program welcomes you to our Fall 2010 lineup of outstanding beef genetics. We our proud of this group of proven bulls and equally proud of our young sires—we believe the strongest lineup of young sires in AI today. Like many of you, our beef program has experienced some major challenges over the past couple of years. Most importantly was the effect of three separate genetic defects that were discovered in the Angus breed. These obstacles resulted in the 7AN330 Regis loss of 18 bulls from our Angus lineup. These bulls represented a significant portion of our calving ease offering and several young sires that were just getting started in their AI careers. We have worked extra hard to replace these bulls with even better genetics and have accumulated several of the most sought-after young sires in the Angus breed. In our Angus program, we have added a super group of young calving ease bulls along with bulls that excel for growth and carcass merit. These bulls have been selected from the very best programs in the country and are backed not only by superior performance, but by tenured breeders who are respected for their genetic contributions. To help complete a more comprehensive Angus lineup and to reach new customers, we have also acquired several bulls that are standouts due to their strong cow families and their superior 7AN334 Upside phenotype. The passing of Roy Wallace was a blow to our program, but Dr. Aaron Arnett, VP, Beef Genetics, has stepped up to the task of acquiring the best bulls in the country, balancing performance and solid data along with a great eye for phenotype and traits that good stockmen appreciate. When you look at our lineup today, you will recognize some changes. These bulls come from a more diverse group of breeders and offer a more diverse mix of pedigrees. As a cooperative working to serve customers with different wants and needs, Select Sires offers a variety of quality genetics. We have not veered from acquiring the best of the best.
Our Fall 2010 Angus lineup includes 31 bulls that rank in the top 10% for CED along with 28 in the top 10% of the breed for low BW. Following in the path marked by such greats as Bando, Ambush, 5204, BAR Ext and 6I6, we are confident that our young sires include future calving ease greats. Our newest Calving Ease additions include 7AN329 Mustang, 7AN330 Regis, 7AN331 Sterling, 7AN333 Rito 954 and 7AN336 Vindicator. Mustang was the highest valued Final Answer son at the 2010 SAV sale while Regis, another Final Answer son, is absolutely unbelievable—he’s thick, sound and attractive, and backed by generations of super cows. Check out his video and cow family at www.selectsiresbeef.com. Sterling, an SAV Legacy son, Rito 954, a 5050 x In Focus, and Vindicator, a moderate-sized outcross, all have super calving ease potential with well-aboveaverage performance and 7AN335 Hemisphere maternal strength. Several super growth and carcass merit bulls have been added in 2010, including 7AN334 Upside, 7AN324 Rito 9B30, 7AN335 Hemisphere, 7AN337 Barometer and 7AN339 Rito 9I9. Upside is an Upward son that topped the Sitz bull sale and Rito 9B30 has a pedigree stacked for super carcass value from both Ambush 28 and Predestined. Hemisphere, a 5050 x Future Direction son, is one of Aaron’s favorites—phenotypically, he’s hard to fault, plus his performance was outstanding, competing in an impressive contemporary group, and Rito 9I9 is a 6I6 son out of Rita 5F56 that’s nearly 70 for $Beef. Other balanced performance sires include 7AN327 Workhorse and 7AN340 Summit. Workhorse is a stunning Protégé son that’s high for both $Weaning and $Beef. Summit, a Game Day son, comes from the Spickler herd in ND, where cows stay because they do their job in a tough environment 7AN328 Prosperity . . . if they don’t, they’re gone. One of the most unique bulls in the country was added to our program this spring—7AN326 Connealy 044 062 ‘Vern’, who records the highest WW EPD in the Angus sire summary. This paternal ½ brother to Grid Maker is long, sound, gentle and
medium for frame size, and offers extreme growth performance with a BW that’s under control. He has the ability to add serious pounds to any calf crop. Among our most talkedabout new additions are 7AN328 Prosperity and 7AN332 Classic. Both of these bulls possess unbelievable good-looks, they are backed-up by great cows and they offer pedigrees that are different. These bulls in particular have got people talking— 7AN332 Classic and both have sexed semen available! Our competition likes to claim that they have a corner on progeny testing—well, they don’t! Select Sires is home to the longest running young sire testing program in the AI industry. As customers, you have benefitted from early data that helps identify bulls with superior genetics. A good example is 7AN299 Answer 71—even though he was born 7 years after his sire, our ‘Answer’ already has more carcass progeny than his sire—22 carcass records compared to 8 for his sire . . . the result of Answer’s first calf crop in our Young Sire Program! We are dedicated to you, our customers, gathering real-world data that protects and guarantees your investment in Select Sires genetics. Select Sires has acquired several super young sires in several other breeds this year, including the high-selling bull from Bieber Red Angus, 7AR59 Outrider. You can’t make one much better— he’s an impressive, dense-bodied, thick-ended sire with a known maternal side. Our Simmental program was strengthened with the acquisition of two outstanding Sure Bet sons. 7SM62 Easy Money comes from the Triangle J herd in NE. Sporting incredible calving ease potential, a -3.0 BW EPD along 7AR59 Outrider with solid growth and superior carcass data, this bull is medium for size and wellabove-average for muscle. 7SM63 Double Down is the most sought-after young Simmental bull in the country this year and we feel that he’ll be in high-demand for years to come. He is a super-complete, great-looking sire with ideal disposition and world-beater performance, including a 151 IMF ratio. Both Double Down and Easy Money are outcrosses to the Legacy lines (Dream On and Shear Force), both are homo black and homo polled, and we anticipate having semen available on both of these bulls later this fall. Another SimGenetic addition is 7SM61 Rimrock. Rimrock is a ½-blood Steel Force son out of a full sister to BC Lookout. Moderate in size and loaded with muscle, Rimrock made lots of friends at Denver, where he was lead bull in the champion pen of three bulls. Two club calf bulls were added to the program this spring and both have plenty to offer. 7CA9 Time Saver is a Tycoon x 3D x Hairietta that just keeps getting better. Gentle-natured, hairy and very well-balanced, Time Saver is a double-bred Who Made Who with loads of style and thickness. Our other club calf acquisition is 7CA10 Park Place, a clean (TH and PHA-free) full brother to the popular and limited-availability sire, Monopoly, sire of many show winners and high-selling steers and heifers this fall. Park Place offers a defect-free option for breeders that want to compete at the top with sale-topping and show-stopping club calves.
A change that we implemented in 2009 is our beef website, www.selectsiresbeef.com. This website contains not only information about our bulls, but offers additional resources as well. Included on the web are free cattle classifieds—a feature that allows you to list cattle and other items for sale and connect with customers via the web. Online semen ordering has also been added to our website, allowing you to order semen on Select Sires beef bulls with the click of your mouse. Select Sires has added sexed semen to our beef product line and we now offer both female and male sexed semen on several lineup bulls. Dr. Arnett has recently added a blog to our website as another vehicle to keep you, the customer, informed of what’s going on at Select Sires. Select Sires is in the process of testing our entire Angus lineup with the AGI/Igenity DNA profile for Angus. This is currently the only genomic test that has results reflected in the EPD—and for you, our customer, we felt that the right way to approach genomics 7SM63 Double Down was to use them as a component of the EPDs that you already understand. The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) recommends that genomic data be evaluated through an EPD. Currently, only carcass EPDs (CW, Marb, RE and Fat) are influenced by the Igenity DNA profile, and consequently, $G and $B values. Proven bulls gain limited additional accuracy with this profile and therefore experience little change to their EPDs. However, non-parent bulls receive the largest corresponding boost in accuracy, and therefore, their carcass EPDs experience the biggest changes. Most of our Angus lineup has been tested with the Igenity profile and their results are reflected in their EPDs. Bottomline with genomics testing—Now We (and You) Know More. Another change that Select Sires has made is the recognition of Select Sires Beef Specialists throughout the country. These persons have extensive experience with beef cattle and with Select Sires, they have a passion for beef, and they are here to assist you. The Beef Specialists are listed in the Beef Sire Directory and on website. They play a significant role in making things happen in our beef program—contact them for anything beef-related. We hope that this article has given you a snapshot of what’s going on at Select Sires. We are excited about the opportunities that these bulls provide and we know that you will be to. Are there changes? Yes, but change is inevitable and change is good! However, some things have not and will not change for our beef 7CA10 Park Place program: We ensure that every straw of Select Sires semen is a highquality product. We continue to gather information on our bulls so that you have more proof and reliability in the sires you select from us than any other genetic supplier. We will continue to be the industry leader in reproduction research. Most importantly, our people are still the dedicated individuals that you have worked with, they ride for the Select Sires brand, and they believe in what they are doing for you. Your Success is Our Passion!
