Another year, another new harvest…

Cuando ustedes tengan entre sus manos este nuevo ejemplar de Selectus Wines, en algunas zonas vitivinícolas habrán acabado de realizar la vendimia, en otras estarán en pleno apogeo y algunas, quizás las menos, no habrán ni tan siquiera empezado. Esta es una de las grandes y maravillosas singularidades de este mundo tan especial que es el mundo del vino. Y ya no hablemos del hemisferio sur, en que en este momento justo deben estar empezando a aparecer las primeras hojas en los viñedos.

Las bodegas recogen el fruto de un largo y duro año de trabajo.

Ahora es el momento de la verdad, en el que se toman decisiones importantes que marcarán el futuro de los vinos que elaboran y que posteriormente tendremos el placer de degustar.

Por nuestra parte, seguimos sembrando y labrando nuestro camino para seguir con una línea que, desde el principio, ha pretendido ser distinguida y de alto nivel, tanto con los reportajes como con los vinos que nuestro comité tiene la oportunidad de degustar y valorar.

Y cada vez son más las bodegas que nos ayudan a que el nivel de todo el trabajo realizado siga siendo de calidad, de muy alta calidad.

En nuestro próximo número, coincidiendo con el inicio de año, anunciaremos algún cambio.

When this latest copy of Selectus Wines reaches you, the wine harvest will be over in some regions, in others it will still be in full swing and in a few it will not even have begun.

This is one of the fabulous characteristics of the very special world that is wine. And we haven’t even mentioned the southern hemisphere of course, where the first leaves should now be starting to show in the vineyards.

The wineries gather the fruit of a long, hard year of work. Now is the moment of truth, when important decisions will be taken that will shape the future of the wines produced, which later we will have the pleasure of tasting.

As far as Selectus Wines is concerned, we continue to plant and plough ahead with an editorial line which, right from the start, has strived to set itself apart and maintain a high level in terms of our articles and the wines which our panel is able to taste and evaluate. More and more wineries are helping us ensure that the quality of our work remains top notch.

In our next issue, out at the start of next year, we may announce some changes. Until then, sit back and enjoy this latest issue.

Del latín paradigma, y del griego παράδειγμα, paradigma, según la Real Academia de la Lengua, es “ejemplo o ejemplar”. Es un modelo, un término que puede indicar el concepto de esquema formal de organización, y ser utilizado como sinónimo de marco teórico. Como recoge Thomas Kuhn en su libro ‘La estructura de las revoluciones científicas’ (1962), un cambio de paradigma es un cambio en los supuestos básicos, o paradigmas, dentro de la teoría dominante de la ciencia. Desde la década de 1960, el término también se ha utilizado en numerosos contextos no científicos para describir un cambio profundo en un modelo fundamental o la percepción de acontecimientos. Y precisamente eso es lo que propugna en el mundo del cava Gramona, que quiere hacer añicos los falsos estereotipos y defender que la excelencia de los grandes espumosos reside en las largas crianzas.

Gramona cree y defiende que la grandeza de un vino espumoso radica en el tiempo que pasa ese vino en contacto con las levaduras en la botella.

From the Latin paradigma, and the Greek παράδειγμα, the Oxford English Dictionary defines the basic meaning of paradigm as “a typical example or pattern of something”. It is a model, a term that can indicate the concept of a formal organizational structure, and can be used as a synonym for a theoretical framework.

As Thomas Kuhn puts it in his book, ‘The Structure of Scientific Revolutions’ (1962), a “paradigm shift” is a change in the basic assumptions, or paradigms, within the prevailing theory of science. Since the 1960’s, the term has also been used in numerous non-scientific contexts to describe a profound change in a fundamental model or perception of events. This is precisely what is happening in the world of Gramona cava, where they want to the tear down false stereotypes and promote the idea that excellence in sparkling wines lies in long ageing. Gramona believes and argues that great quality sparkling wine is the result of the amount of time that the wine spends in contact with the yeast in the bottle.

Se añade que “la microbiología nos ha enseñado en los últimos 15 años que la mayor parte de los aromas y sensaciones de un gran vino espumoso de larga crianza, proceden de la autolisis de las levaduras y, otra menor parte, de la oxidación de los terpenos, es decir de los aromas primarios de la uva”. Así mismo, entienden que la importancia del terroir radica en obtener un fruto para vinificar espumoso que contenga

Hace ya más de 50 años la familia Gramona confirmó la posibilidad de las largas crianzas en nuestro país gracias a dos factores: El viñedo de La Plana y la variedad de uva xarel·lo. Entonces no se conocían las razones por las que esa combinación ofrecía vinos tan longevos e interesantes, y sólo la experiencia de los 130 años anteriores apoyaba la evidencia. “Hoy sabemos gracias al mundo académico la composición y la realidad de la xarel·lo”, afirman.

Las cavas Gramona de Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, que en las dos últimas décadas han vivido una eclosión espectacular buscando la excelencia, se han empecinado en comunicar que el cava es un gran vino capaz de trascender a primer nivel mundial. Y tan seguros están de ellos mismos que se atreven a medirse a ciegas con los champanes más afamados, como demostraron el pasado 27 de mayo en Barcelona, saliendo claramente victoriosos con joyas de su Enoteca como el maravilloso Celler Batlle 1999 (elegancia, finura y complejidad

Gramona, based in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, which in the last two decades has undergone a spectacular transformation in the search for excellence, has stubbornly persisted in communicating that cava is a great wine capable of being world class. They are so sure of themselves that they are even daring to carry out blind tastings against iconic champagnes, as demonstrated on 27 May in Barcelona, where they emerged clearly victorious with little gems from their “Enoteca” such as the wonderful Celler Batlle 1999 (elegance, finesse and complexity with saline and iodine notes and surprising evolution of the fruit). In October they launched two selected products on to the market, the Enocteca Gramona 2000 Brut (2,500 bot– 11

Gramona apunta que “no sé cuándo ocurrió”, y añade que “ese día que empezamos a agotar existencias, ese otro día en el que el crítico adverso de siempre se quitó el sombrero… quizás cuando otros muchos colegas empezaron a anunciar cavas de larga crianza. El día que todo un Asimov, del New York Times, dijo que Gramona había cambiado su idea del cava, y que le recordaba a los grandes Champagnes…” En definitiva, “los años de crianza y la evolución del cuerpo y alma del vino determinarán el carácter del vino espumoso”.

Xavier Gramona added “I don’t know when it happened, perhaps it was the day when stocks started to run out, or the day when a negative wine critic took his hat off to us... or maybe it was when many of our industry colleagues began talking about launching their own long aged cavas. Possibly the day when Asimov, no less, of the New York Times, said that Gramona had changed his opinion of cava, and that it reminded him of great champagnes. Ultimately, “the years of ageing and the development of a wine’s body and soul will determine the character of sparkling wine.”

Y con todo ello defiende una política de precios al alza para los grandes cavas conscientes de que nadie puede ganar prestigio con unos precios excesivamente bajos. Sin cavas de precio más elevado “se hace difícil tener una percepción de calidad”.

En Gramona están volviendo la vista de forma comprometida hacia sus ancestrales viñedos. Aplican la geotermia en su compromiso con la sostenibilidad y la agrología convencidos de la importancia de la microfauna del suelo y del subsuelo, Trabajan bajo parámetros ecológicos y biodinámicos, pendientes de las fases lunares y de la antroposofía. Y lo llevan a la práctica, entre

He adds that “as well as expressing identity and terroir, great sparkling wine has a mission to seduce”. And because of this, he supports a policy of raising the prices of very fine cavas, conscious of the fact that no one gains prestige with excessively low prices. Without higher priced cavas “it would be difficult to be perceived as high quality.”

Gramona is now focusing a great deal of its attention on its ancestral vineyards. It is using geothermal energy as part of its commitment to sustainability and agrology, convinced of the importance of the soil and subsoil’s microfauna. It is working with organic and biodynamic parameters, in accordance with lunar phases and Anthroposophy. Gramona has put it all into practice, alongside other multidisciplinary activity, by the introduction of 12 cows, one bull and 4 calves (which were born on the farm), of a small northern Catalonia breed.

Jaume Gramona, presidente y director técnico de las cavas Gramona, cree que es una acción “muy importante” la de unir el reino animal con el mundo vegetal. Apunta que el animal puede intervenir en el mantenimiento de la parcela y en la producción del propio compost como elemento dinamizador de la tierra, y recuerda que su coste es menor y mejora la huella de carbono, refrendando una vez más su compromiso con la sostenibilidad mientras aporta una plusvalía en la imagen de la finca. En lo más profundo de las bodegas del Castillo Perelada, rodeados de barricas y bajo una bóveda de piedra, Delfí Sanahuja hace un repaso de su vida laboral como enólogo. Sencillo, abierto y apasionado, amante de la tierra y del contacto con la viña. Su vida como enólogo ha permanecido siempre vinculada a Castillo Perelada, de hecho este mismo año cumplirá 20 vendimias con ellos. Como director técnico trabaja para elaborar vinos para todos los momentos, desde la exclusividad y alta gama de Finca Garbet hasta la cotidianidad de 5 Fincas.

In the very depths of the Castillo Perelada cellars, surrounded by barrels and under a stone vault, Delfí Sanahuja gives a run-through of his working life as an oenologist. Natural, open and passionate, he loves the land and contact with the vines. His career as an oenologist has always remained linked to Castillo Perelada, and in fact this year he will have spent 20 harvests with them. As technical director his job is to produce wines for every occasion, from the exclusive and top range Finca Garbet to the everyday 5 Fincas.

¿Cómo se inició en el mundo de la enología?

Siempre me ha gustado el campo y la viticultura, he preferido estar en la viña antes que en el despacho. En casa toda la vida hemos tenido terrenos y viñedos, siempre he bebido vino, era un producto presente en la mesa y probarlo me gustaba. Supongo, pues, que hay parte de herencia familiar.

How did you start out in the oenology world?

I've always liked the countryside and viticulture, and preferred being in the vineyard to the office. Throughout my time at home we'd had land and vineyards, and I'd always drunk wine which was there on the table and I liked trying it. I suppose then that it's partly hereditary.

¿Qué vinos le emocionaron en sus inicios?

Creo que tendría que hablar de 2 vinos: Vega Sicilia y Château Petrus de Burdeos. Cuando los probé pensé que el mundo del vino era muy serio, que era más que una simple botella de vino sobre la mesa. Entonces cambié el chip y pensé en hacer vinos que emocionaran, claro que también hacen falta vinos para consumir a diario, creo que necesitamos vinos para todos los momentos.

Which wines were you inspired by early on?

I think I would have to mention 2 wines: Vega Sicilia and Chateau Petrus from Bordeaux. When I tried them, I realised that the world of wine was very serious, that it was more than just an ordinary bottle of wine on the table. Then I took a different tack and considered making wines which would arouse the emotions, though obviously wines for drinking everyday are also required. I think we need wines for every occasion.

Podríamos decir que toda su vida profesional gira entorno a Perelada. ¿Le gustaría cambiar de bodega?

En absoluto, aquí hay los medios, las ganas y la libertad, lo tengo todo. De hecho es la bodega de Cataluña que tengo más lejos de casa, soy de Valls, pero, francamente, no la cambio por ninguna otra. Mi historia está vinculada a Perelada, he vivido los inicios de su recuperación para hacer vinos de calidad hasta ahora y me siento orgulloso de ello.

La DO Empordà cada vez toma más fuerza. ¿Qué características tiene?

Para mi, el Empordà es de las mejores zonas de España para hacer vinos de calidad, promete por su heterogeneidad de terrenos en un espacio tan pequeño. Aquí tenemos muchas variedades de uva, la tramontana, que le da un carácter a los vinos… Todo hace que sea una DO moderna, con libertad y que no te restringe, esto también es importante.

¿De qué vinos con su firma de enólogo está más orgulloso o tiene un recuerdo especial?

Es complicado responder con una bodega como Perelada, porque hacemos vinos muy distintos y cada uno tiene su qué. Hablaría de Finca Garbet como grado de dificultad y pasión, es un vino de gama muy alta con el que tienes que demostrar todos tus conocimientos. Los vinos de la inquietud y la experimentación serían los ExEx. Como ejemplo de vino serio hablaría de Gran Claustro, el primer vino de gama alta con la DO Empordà, para nosotros es un vino histórico, serio, nuestro buque insignia. También hablaría del vino que por su relación calidadprecio nos ha dado a conocer fuera de

It's a large enough winery, making volume wines, high quality wines and also devoting time to research. Therefore, we can make whites, reds, rosés and topend wines like Garbet or experimental ones such as ExEx. We could say that the whole of your professional life has revolved around Perelada. Would you like a change of winery?

Absolutely not; there are resources here, plenty of enthusiasm and freedom, I've got it all. In fact it's the furthest winery in Cataluña from my home, as I'm from Valls, but quite frankly I wouldn't change it for another. My past history is linked to Perelada; I've experienced the start of its resurgence in quality winemaking so far and I feel proud of that.

The Empordà is getting increasingly stronger. What characteristics does it have?

In my opinion, the Empordà is among the best regions in Spain for making quality wines, and shows promise due to the wide diversity of terrains in such a small area. We have many grape varieties here, the Tramontana wind, which gives the wines character... It all makes for a modern DO, allowing freedom and not restricting you, which is also important.

Which wines with you as oenologist are you most proud of or have given you special memories?

It's complicated to answer with a winery like Perelada, because we make very varied wines and each one has its reasons why. I would mention Finca Garbet on a level of difficulty and dedication, as a very high-end of the range wine which requires you to demonstrate all your knowledge. Wines for special concern and experiments would be the ExEx. As an example of a serious wine I would suggest Gran Claustro, the first top of the range wine with the Empordà DO, and for us it's a historic, serious wine, and our flagship. I'd also mention the wine that due to its quality-price relationship has made us famous outside Cataluña: Finca Malaveina. Finally we

Uno de los vinos emblemáticos de la bodega es Finca Garbet cuyos viñedos se asoman al mar.

Se trata de un vino elaborado básicamente con syrah y cabernet, pero hemos ido variando el cupaje, por ejemplo, las añadas de 2001 y 2003 contienen 85% syrah y 15% cabernet y la del 2005, que comercializamos ahora, es 100% syrah. Se trata de un vino muy internacional, especialmente en Inglaterra, Estados Unidos y los países escandinavos.

Para nosotros este vino es muy importante. Cuando se hacen catas de buenos vinos en España muchas veces lo incluyen y es gratificante que cuando tienen que escoger entre 30 o 40 botellas, opten por la tuya. ¿Algún recuerdo especial asociado a Garbet?

Me acuerdo especialmente de la primera añada, cosecha 2001. Hicimos una presentación para la prensa más importante de España, los periodistas pasaron todo el fin de semana con nosotros y les explicamos el proceso de elaboración del vino. Lo recuerdo muy intensamente y creo que salimos con nota. En ese momento dimos un salto cualitativo respecto a lo que habíamos sido hasta aquel momento: pasamos de hacer vinos de calidad a vinos de referencia. Fue una apuesta para demostrar que se podían hacer vinos importantes en la zona. ¿Qué aptitudes necesita un buen enólogo?

Básicamente creo que hay tres factores: sensibilidad a la hora de catar, ser una persona técnica con muchos conocimientos y mucha investigación y ganas de aprender cada día para ser capaz de descubrir qué le va bien en tu zona…

These five wines are important to me, each one in their own way and because they represent the Perelada brand.

One of the winery's emblematic wines is Finca Garbet whose vineyards look out over the sea.

It's a wine made basically from Syrah and Cabernet, but we have been varying the blend, so for example the 2001 and 2003 vintages contain 85% Syrah and 15% Cabernet and the 2005, which we're marketing now, is 100% Syrah. It's an internationally known wine, especially in England, the United States and Scandinavia.

This wine is extremely important for us.

When tastings of fine wines are held in Spain, it is often included and it's very rewarding when there are 30 or 40 bottles to choose from and yours is selected.

A special memory associated with Garbet?

I particularly remember the first year, the 2001 vintage. We did a presentation for the most important critics in Spain, with journalists spending the whole weekend with us, and us explaining the wine-making process to them.

I can remember it very vividly and I think we came out of it very well. At that point we made a qualitative leap in relation to what we had been doing up until then: we went from making quality wines to benchmark wines. Our aim was to show that important wines could be made in this area.

What skills does a good oenologist need?

Basically, I believe there are three factors: sensitivity when tasting, being a technical expert with plenty of knowledge and lots of research and a keenness to learn daily, so you’re able to find out what does well in your area ...

How would you define an oenologist?

A mixture of many things: you have to be a bit of a researcher, technician, artist; you must have wide-ranging knowledge because the training comprises many specialist subjects. The most

Sicilia, el pequeño continente Sicily, the small continent PEDRO BALLESTEROS MW (Master of Wine) Tendemos a asociar el nombre de Sicilia con imágenes de luz mediterránea, hermosas playas y monumentos históricos, no necesariamente con el vino. En España es particularmente difícil encontrar buenos vinos sicilianos, mientras que en los países del Norte europeo la mayor parte del vino siciliano se encuentra en la parte inferior de las estanterías de los supermercados. El turismo ayuda poco, porque el sector hotelero promociona poco el vino local (algo que también sufrimos en España, debo decir), y tiende a ofrecer vinos de calidad mediocre. Así, son pocos los afortunados que habiendo visitado Sicilia en vacaciones conservan recuerdos memorables de su vino.

Sin embargo, Sicilia tiene todo para ser considerada una de las zonas vinícolas más importantes, como ya lo fue en tiempos de la Magna Grecia. En primer lugar, Sicilia produce mucho, más de 6 millones de hectolitros de vino al año, es decir, más que Nueva Zelanda y Austria juntas.

Podemos encontrar en Sicilia un enorme rango de calidades, que de hecho abarcan todos los segmentos del mercado, desde el vino peleón al vino más icónico. Sicilia también ofrece una gran diversidad estilística, blancos, tintos y rosados, secos y dulces, con muy variadas expresiones. Pero lo que más me anima a escribir sobre Sicilia es que encontramos vinos absolutamente únicos, imposibles de copiar y que representan la cumbre de calidad en su propio estilo.

En los continentes, la diversidad de vinos es muy dependiente de factores tales como la latitud, la topografía y el clima, que varían en distancia. En su pequeño espacio, los pequeños

We tend to associate Sicily with images of Mediterranean light, beautiful beaches and historical monuments, but not necessarily with wine. In Spain it is particularly difficult to find good Sicilian wines, while in North European countries most Sicilian wines are displayed at the bottom of supermarket shelves.

Tourism helps little because the Sicilian hotel industry rarely promotes the local wine (something from which we also suffer in Spain, I have to say), and tends to offer wines of mediocre quality. So, after a holiday in Sicily, only a lucky few return home with fond memories of its wine.

However, Sicily has everything it needs to be considered one of the most important wine regions, as it was back in the times of “Magna Grecia”. Firstly, Sicily produces a lot of wine, over 6 million hectolitres per year, i.e. more than New Zealand and Austria put together.

In Sicily you can find a huge range of quality, which actually covers all market segments from everyday plonk through to the most iconic wines. Sicily also offers a great diversity of styles, white, red and rosé, dry and sweet, with very different characters. But what really inspires me to write about Sicily is that there are some totally unique, inimitable wines to be found there which, in their own style, represent the zenith of quality.

The diversity of wines produced on continents is highly dependent on factors such as latitude, topography and climate, which vary with distance. Within their small land mass, small continents can play with altitude, dramatic topography and soil variety to provide diversity.

Sicily is a small continent which boasts a variety of microclimates and soils in a relatively small surface area.

Sicilia es un pequeño continente, ya que ofrece una gran variedad de microclimas y suelos en un área relativamente pequeña.

El volcán Etna es la clave para tal variedad, gracias a su altitud, 3350 m, y su incesante actividad creadora de suelos volcánicos. La faceta creadora de los volcanes se suele olvidar frente al miedo que dan sus erupciones.

Pero es apasionante prestar atención al milagro de los suelos volcánicos.

Los volcanes representan la renovación en el ciclo de vida de la tierra y de los suelos, que una vez erosionados mueren arrastrados como sedimentos hacia el fondo marino, y renacen en forma de la lava arrojada por los volcanes. La propia juventud de los suelos volcánicos los hace poco fértiles en ladera. Son además suelos ácidos, que se hacen ideales para el cultivo de la vid en latitudes bajas como Sicilia (o Canarias, de las que hablaremos otro día). La asociación de ideas vino de calidad/piedra caliza, es manida y un poco una mítico-nacionalista, ya que sólo tiene sentido en condiciones muy específicas y altas latitudes. Altitud elevada, drenaje eficaz, mucha luz y el uso de uvas autóctonas hacen el resto del milagro del vino fino en el Etna.

La variedad de uva Nerello Mascalese encuentra su lugar favorito en la ladera norte del volcán. Los mejores vinos de Nerello Mascalese son poco colorados, con delicados aromas de cerezas, florales y balsámicos, una estructura en boca muy particular, de notable acidez, alto contenido de alcohol y un final sutil y largo. Los vinateros a menudo añaden color y taninos con el corte con Nerello Capuccio y/o envejecimiento en barricas. Yo prefiero el Mascalese puro con su identidad única.

Quisiera destacar algunos viñadores.

due to its altitude (3,350 m) and its constant volcanic activity which creates volcanic soils. Because their eruptions are feared, the creative nature of volcanoes is often forgotten. But it is fascinating to take a look at the miraculous nature of volcanic soils. Volcanoes represent renewal in the life cycle of the earth and its soils, which after eroding, die and are dragged to the seafloor as sediment to be reborn in the form of lava thrown out by the volcanoes. The young nature of volcanic soils makes them fairly infertile on the volcano’s slopes. They are also acidic soils, which make them ideal for growing grapes at low latitudes such as that of Sicily (or the Canary Islands, which we will discuss some other time).

The association of quality wine with limestone is clichéd and a bit of a nationalist myth, and it only makes sense in very specific conditions and at high latitudes. The rest of the Etna “fine wine miracle” is created by high altitude, efficient drainage, abundant light and the use of indigenous grapes.

The Mascalese Nerello grape variety finds itself most at home on the volcano’s northern slope. The best Mascalese Nerello wines are low in colour with delicate cherry, balsamic and floral aromas and a very particular structure on the palate, with noticeable acidity, high alcohol content and a long, subtle finish. Winemakers often add colour and tannins to the blend using the Nerello Cappuccio and/or ageing in barrels.

I prefer the pure Mascalese with its unique identity.

I would like to pick out a handful of winemakers. Federico Curtaz, an immigrant from the mountains of Piedmont who is perfectly attuned to his new mountain, Mount Etna, produces his Musmeci Fessina (Mascalese 90%, 10% Cappuccio), in a big, sensual style with an original expression.

As a Belgian, Frank Cornelissen, is an immigrant on two counts, he moved from north to south and from lowlands to highlands. Maybe that’s why his almost philosophical attempt to bring out the ultimate essence of Nerello Mascalese is appreciated. Natural viticulture on old terraced vineyards, low yields, very

Frank Cornelissen, siendo belga, es un emigrante por partida doble, de norte a sur y de tierras bajas a las montañas.

Quizá por eso se aprecia su intento casi filosófico de buscar la última esencia del Nerello Mascalese. Viticultura natural en antiguas terrazas de viñedos, pequeños rendimientos, cosecha muy tardía, y vinificación sin barricas ni SO2 ni clarificantes… Hay veces que encuentra el Santo Grial, como con su Munjebel Vine 8VA Alte’11, de genuina complejidad, pero otros vinos suyos son un poco excesivos, especialmente en términos de alcohol.

Pero aun así, expreso mi admiración por su trabajo.

El tinto de Benanti, su clásico Rovitello’05 (80% Nerello Mascalese), concentrado y equilibrado, persistente, muestra otra expresión de la uva absolutamente recomendable.

Sometimes we reach the Holy Grail, as with his Munjebel Vine 8VA Alte’11 of genuine complexity, but some of his other wines are a bit overblown, especially in terms of alcohol. But still, I do admire his work.

The red from Benanti, his classic Rovitello’05 (80% Nerello Mascalese), which is concentrated, well balanced and long, shows a different and highly commendable expression of the grape.

Etna is home to another specific grape variety, the Carricante blanco. A sort of southern Riesling with impressive minerality, subtle and complex fruit, good acidity and an open finish. Benanti is my favorite producer. His Pietramarina is a lovely, long, deep and delicate wine with good bottle ageing capacity.

Firriato produces another remarkable Carricante, Cavanera: delicate, delicious, with notes of aniseed.

El Etna alberga otra variedad específica, el Carricante blanco. Una especie de Riesling sureño con impresionante mineralidad, fruta sutil y compleja, buena acidez y final abierto. Benanti es mi productor favorito.

Su Pietramarina es un vino largo, profundo y delicado, bonito, con buena capacidad de mejorarse con el envejecimiento en botella. Firriato produce otro Carricante notable, Cavanera: delicado, con notas anisadas, delicioso.

En el sureste de la isla, los suelos volcánicos son reemplazados por suelos arcillo-calizos, mientras que el clima se hace casi desértico. Esa zona parece ser un lugar inverosímil para vinos de terruño, al menos para aquellos que piensan que el terroir existe solamente en Borgoña o el Rhin. The NeroBuffaleffj is simply beautiful, a delight for the senses with magical balance. The NeroBaronj is less expressive, but probably more suitable for long aging. Nero Maccarj is the richest and fruitiest. NeroSanLoré is more discreet and refined. And the four together make for an unforgettable tasting.

Further west, you come to Vittoria, the land of the Frappato, a native grape variety which produces wines with intense varietal aromas, with kirsch, violets and

Más hacia el oeste, se llega a Vittoria, la tierra del Frappato, uva autóctona que da vinos de intensos aromas varietales, con kirsch, violetas, especias, sabroso cuando se vinifica en solitario (compruébenlo con el Frappato de Occhipinti), pero que se combina bien con el Nero d’Avola para dar el Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOC. Valle dell’Acate es un buen ejemplo, vivaz y alegre, con su 2006. Pero tal vez el vino más impresionante sea Tanè, un coupage de Nero d’Avola y Syrah, con aromas de regaliz y tinta, de concentración increíble, sedoso pero firme, muy potente.

El Nero d’Avola es la variedad por excelencia del centro de Sicilia. Siempre usada para producir vinos de pasto jugosos y a buen precio. Duca de Salaparuta popularizó el Corvo como vino de calidad a buen precio (un especie de Sangre de Toro a la siciliana), pero sobre todo demostró el potencial cualitativo de la Nero d’Avola con su vino Homónimo, Duca de Salaparuta.

Después vinieron otros vinos emblemáticos que deslumbraron a los expertos. El Rosso del Conte de Tasca d’Almerita es casi una referencia obligatoria como grana vino clásico. Este vino tiene todo para seducir: la elegancia, estructura prieta, taninos de grano fino, la capacidad de envejecimiento, persistencia. El año pasado pude gozarme una cata vertical de este vino, y recuerdo las añadas 1989, 2001, 2004 y 2007 como excepcionales.

En un estilo diferente, construido sobre la opulencia, la intensidad frutal y el aporte evidente de la madera, el Santa Cecilia de Planeta es otro vino superior. La versatilidad de la Nero

spices, delicious when vinified on its own (try the Frappato from Occhipinti), but it blends well with the Nero d’Avola to produce Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOC. Valle dell’Acate is a good example, its 2006 is lively and cheerful. But perhaps the most impressive wine is Tanè, a blend of Nero d’Avola and Syrah, with aromas

of liquorice and ink, amazing concentration, silky but firm and very powerful.

The Nero d’Avola is the quintessential variety of central Sicily, always used to produce ordinary wines, juicy and cheap.

Duca de Salaparuta popularized Corvo as a quality wine at a decent price (a kind of Sicilian Sangre de Toro), but above all, with its namesake wine, Duca de Salaparuta, it illustrated the quality potential of the Nero d’Avola. Then along came other iconic wines which amazed the experts. The Rosso del Conte from Tasca d’Almerita is an almost compulsory reference great classic wine. This wine has everything going for it: elegance, tight structure, fine-grained tannins, ageing capacity, long lasting aromas. Last year I enjoyed a vertical tasting of this wine, and I remember the 1989, 2001, 2004 and 2007 vintages as being exceptional.

In a different style, built around opulence, intensity of fruit and the palpable contribution of oak, the Santa Cecilia from Planeta is another superior wine.

d’Avola se afirma con el “Mille e una notte” de Donnafugata, en un estilo más terroso y con gran densidad tánica, muy corposo, y se confirma con el vino más idiosincrático y personal, a veces precioso, otras menos conseguido, con gran variación en función de la añada, pero siempre sorprendente con sus aromas de fruta confitada y los finales muy abiertos, el Vrucara de Montoni.

Hay muchas otras variedades de la isla original, con notable potencial cualitativo, que sólo ahora está empezando a ser entendido. El Grillo, la variedad más común, no era el favorito de los profesionales debido a su carácter neutro, poco aromático. Uno de los productores más clásicos, Marco de Bartoli, más conocido por su marsala, muestra el potencial de Grillo con su “Grappoli del Grilllo” un manjar, delicado, intemporal. Ansonica es otra variedad hasta hace poco despreciada que Donnafugata he incluido en el diccionario de las grandes variedades

There are many other varieties from the original island, with remarkable quality potential which is only now beginning to be understood. Grillo, the most common grape variety, was not a favourite with winemakers due to its neutral and not very aromatic character. One of the most classic producers, Marco de Bartoli, best known for his Marsala, shows the potential of Grillo with his “Grappoli del Grilllo” a subtle, timeless delicacy. Ansonica was another despised variety until recently, which Donnafugata, with its Vigna di Gabri,

La ‘maison’ Louis Roederer ha deslumbrado con una edición limitada del 2002 en formato doble magnum de su champán icono, el célebre Cristal. Ibiza ha sido escogida como la sede de la presentación mundial de un champán que no está al alcance de todos los bolsillos: 21.000 euros.

Una exclusiva botella del champán más célebre de Louis Roederer, el Cristal, se ha presentado con acompañamiento de caviar y asado argentino en el Ibiza Polo Club. Al estreno mundial, que presidió el 21 de junio el director general adjunto de Roederer, Michel Janneau, asistió el actor norteamericano Stephen Dorff y el empresario de relaciones públicas e impulsor del polo en Ibiza Román Fortunato. En la puesta de largo, sin embargo, no se pudo catar esta ‘joya’. Este exclusivo y rutilante champán, que se anunció como “una obra de arte”, se presenta en una espectacular y áurea botella doble magnum (tres litros) confeccionada totalmente a mano. Es un diseño artesanal de Philippe Di Meo. Según este diseñador francés, “al imaginar este jeroboam de Cristal, solo veía la luz del vino protegida en una botella transparente, imponente por su tamaño. Ninguna sombra sobre la botella sino, más bien, reflejos provenientes de ‘un sol’. De esta idea nació una malla precisa como una joya a flor de piel”.

Destaca por sus eslabones-medallones engastados directamente en el vidrio.

Contiene el Cristal del 2002, una muy buen añada criada durante más de una década en la propia botella.

An exclusive bottle of Louis Roederer’s most famous champagne, Cristal, was presented with accompanying caviar and Argentinian grill at the Polo Club in Ibiza. The world premiere on 21 June was presided over by Michel Janneau, deputy general director of Roederer, with the participation of American actor Stephen Dorff and Fortunato Román, public relations entrepreneur and promoter of polo in Ibiza. However, it was not possible to taste this “jewel” of a champagne at the event. The unique, shimmering champagne, which is being heralded as “a masterpiece”, comes in a spectacular golden double magnum (three litres) made entirely by hand to a craft design by Philippe Di Meo. According to the French designer, when he was dreaming up the design of this jeroboam of Cristal, “all I could think of was the light of the wine protected in a clear bottle that was imposing due to its size. No shadows on the bottle only the reflections coming from ‘a sun’. From this idea emerged that of a delicate lattice-like jewel against the skin”.

Distinctive for its medallion links set directly in the glass, it contains Cristal from the very fine 2002 vintage aged in its own bottle for over a decade. Its creation took four days of work, two master goldsmiths, 12 different trades, 700 metres of 24 carat gold-dipped brass tape dipped in 24 carat gold and 158 silver weld points. According

Ocho botellas para España, a 21.000 euros La Jeroboam Cristal 2002 Orfèvre Limited Edition se vende por unos 21.000 euros. Una botella de 75 cl. de esta añada de Cristal aún puede encontrarse en el mercado por unos 216 euros. Para el mercado español solo hay ocho de las 200 jeroboam disponibles para todo el mundo este año, que distribuye la empresa catalana Primeras Marcas. Sorprendiendo a propios y a extraños, las ocho botellas ya están comprometidas. El próximo año se comercializarán otras 200 botellas. Primeras Marcas S.A., con 25 años de trayectoria, es una distribuidora participada por Juvé y Camps es una compañía distribuidora de espirituosos, generosos, vinos y champagnes, que comercializa marcas premium de bebida, nacionales e internacionales en todo el territorio español.

A 75 cl bottle of this Cristal vintage can still be found on the market for around 216 euros. Only eight of the 200 Jeroboams available worldwide this year are earmarked for the Spanish market, distributed by the Catalan Primeras Marcas company. Surprisingly for both its distributors and everyone else, the eight bottles have already been reserved.

Next year, another 200 bottles will be put on the market. Primeras Marcas S.A., with 25 years of experience, is a distribution company owned by Juve y Camps, which distributes noble liquors, wines and champagnes and markets premium national and international drinks brands throughout Spain.

The 21,000 euros price of the Orfèvre Limited Edition Cristal 2002 Jeroboam seems little compared with the 102,000 euros that a Saudi millionaire forked out last year for a 75 cl bottle of Cristal 1990 at the Club Cavalli in Dubai.

El célebre champán Cristal, elaborado con uvas pinot noir y chardonnay de Grands Crus, fue creado en 1876 para el zar Alejandro II de Rusia, conocido como el ‘Lincoln ruso’. Se cree que el zar, temiendo que atentaran contra su vida, ordenó que las botellas que contenían el Cristal fuesen transparentes para evitar que tras el típico color verde botella de los champanes se ocultara una bomba. Louis Roederer, un vidriero flamenco, fue el encargado de crear esa entonces singular botella transparente, la primera con el fondo plano. Tras la revolución bolchevique de Octubre, el asesinato del zar Nicolás II y el fin de la dinastía de los Romanov, Roederer decidió mantener su hedonista champán. Hoy es el champán preferido de muchas celebridades. También esta cuvée ha sido icono en películas como ‘Four Rooms’ de Quentin Tarantino, o ‘Lost in traslation’, dirigida por Sofia Coppola y protagonizada por Bill Murray y Scarlett Johansson. En ‘Four Rooms’ Tarantino, interpretándose a sí mismo, celebra junto a unos amigos la nochevieja en la suite presidencial de un hotel. Beben abundante Cristal y Tarantino eleva las cualidades del champán constantemente. ■

Distributor Primeras Marcas adds that Cristal is a champagne of “extraordinary finesse and elegance” which is still made as it used to be for Tsar Alexander II.

A visit to The Real Wine Fair in London, with its concentration of wineries from across the world, highlights the diversity of those wines which have been specifically made to express the character of each grape variety on a particular terroir without any interference.

Últimamente se habla cada vez más de vinos naturales, muchas veces sin un conocimiento cabal de lo que esto significa. En fin, ya sabemos que el mundo del vino abunda en pseudoexpertos que disfrutan epatando al resto de los mortales con palabros que están en boga pero cuyo real significado se les escapa.

En todo caso, cuando se habla de vinos naturales, el despiste se generaliza porque se trata de un concepto algo difuso. Para colmo, el nombre tampoco ayuda, porque se antoja cuanto menos absolutista. Si estos son los vinos naturales, ¿los otros que son? ¿Artificiales?

Antes de que el lector entre en pánico, intentaré en estas páginas dilucidar brevemente la cuestión para que cada uno adopte luego la postura que le venga en gana.

There has been more and more talk lately about natural wines but often without really understanding what these are. Well, what we do know is that the wine world is full of pseudo-experts who enjoy showing off to the rest of us mortals by using the latest buzzwords, the true meaning of which often escapes them. And, when it comes to natural wines, we are even more confused because ‘natural’ is somewhat of a fuzzy concept. To make matters worse, the name itself does not really help, because it seems very black and white.

If these are natural wines, then what are all the others? Artificial?

Before the reader panics, I will attempt to quickly clarify the issue and then everyone can then take the stance they please.

Catadura moral Lo primero que hay que saber es que los llamados vinos naturales no son mejores ni peores que el resto de los brebajes que con tanta naturalidad – nunca mejor dicho– nos llevamos al buche. Son, simplemente, distintos: vinos que han llegado a ser como son porque no pretenden más que expresar el carácter de la uva en un terroir determinado sin interferencia alguna.

Dicho así, parece sencillo de entender.

They are simply different: wines whose raison d’être is to express the character of the grape in a particular terroir without any interference.

Pero el asunto es más complicado, porque un vino no es como una manzana, que crece en el árbol hasta que alguien la coge y se la come. El vino, mal que nos pese, necesita de la mano del hombre y de unas cuantas decisiones para saltar de la viña a la prensa, de allí al depósito, luego a la barrica y finalmente a la botella.

Por supuesto que todo este proceso se puede realizar con intervenciones más maquiavélicas que otras. Entonces, lo que diferencia a los vinos naturales tiene que ver más bien con la catadura moral de quien lo elabora.

Por si las moscas, quienes se autoproclaman defensores de la naturaleza hecha vino se han puesto de acuerdo para definir una serie de pautas relativas a la elaboración de este tipo de vinos.

and takes a bite out of. Wine, whether we like it or not, needs man’s assistance and a few decisions to be taken for it to go from the vine to the press, to the tank, then into the barrel and finally into the bottle.

Of course, this whole procedure can be performed by processes which can be more Machiavellian than others. So what actually differentiates natural wines has more to do with the moral viewpoint of those who make it.

Just to make it clear, those who call themselves defenders of naturally made wine have agreed to define a set of guidelines relating to the production of this type of wine.

The PVN (Association of Natural Wine Producers in Spain) therefore sets out a few rules that growers should comply

Así, la PVN (Asociación de Productores de Vinos Naturales de España) apunta unas cuantas normas que los viticultores deben cumplir a rajatabla si quieren ser considerados como tales. A saber: 1. El cultivo debe ser respetuoso con el medio. Lo mismo da apuntarse a los métodos biológicos o biodimámicos que seguir cultivando tal como lo hacían nuestros abuelos. Lo importante es utilizar sólo productos naturales, nada de químicos.

2. El compromiso con el entorno natural alcanza también a la utilización responsable de la energía, el tratamiento de los residuos o la utilización de tapones de corcho.

3. El viticultor es el único que controla el viñedo, responsable de todas las decisiones. Jamás se trabaja con uvas ajenas.

4. La uva debe reflejar las condiciones de la tierra y la añada. En la vinificación no se utilizan levaduras seleccionadas ni bacterias que puedan conducir la fermentación maloláctica, tampoco se corrige la acidez, no se chaptaliza, no se añaden aromas ni se emplean virutas de madera para saborizar la santa bebida. También están interdictos la ósmosis inversa, la criomaceración y demás técnicas modernas que puedan disgregar los componentes naturales del vino.

Tampoco se clarifica ni se filtra.

5. El anhídrido sulfuroso (SO2) está estrictamente vedado, porque se considera tóxico y perjudicial para la salud. Hete aquí un elemento clave para entender los vinos naturales, porque la utilización de este tipo de gas está muy extendida en la viticultura convencional, que lo considera un elemento fundamental para garantizar la estabilidad de los vinos tras el embotellado.

Los postulados que defienden estos viticultores dan lugar a vinos de calidad diversa, cuyas virtudes y defectos se sobredimensionan debido a la ausencia de elementos correctores durante el proceso de elaboración. En este sentido, la ausencia de sulfuroso

with to the letter if they wish to be considered natural wine producers.

These are: 1. Cultivation must be environmentally-friendly. The same applies whether biological and biodynamic methods are used or whether we continue to cultivate as our grandparents did. The important point is that only natural products, and no chemicals, can be used.

2. The commitment to the natural environment also extends to the responsible use of energy, waste treatment or the use of corks.

3. The grower is the only person allowed to manage the vineyard, and is responsible for all decisions. He or she never works with grapes that are not his or her own.

4. The grape must reflect the conditions of the soil and the vintage.

Selected wine yeasts or bacteria that could lead to malolactic fermentation are not used in vinification, nor is the acidity corrected, chaptalization is disallowed, aromas cannot be added, and wood chips cannot be used to flavour the holy drink. There are also injunctions on reverse osmosis, criomaceration and other modern techniques that can break down the natural components of the wine. The wines cannot be clarified nor filtered.

5. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is strictly forbidden because it is considered toxic and harmful to health. Voila! you now have something to help you understand what natural wine is, because the use of this type of gas is widespread in conventional viticulture, and is considered vital to ensuring the stability of the wine after bottling.

The premises that these growers defend result in wines of variable quality, whose virtues and defects are amplified due to the absence of corrections during the winemaking process. In this sense, it is the absence of sulphur which is perhaps the most important thing, because without this added, the wine expresses the nuances of terroir more clearly but is also more vulnerable to bacterial contamination and the harmful effects of light, temperature and oxygen.

De cata en Londres: contra los vinos clónicos Dicho esto, me dispongo a compartir con los lectores de esta noble publicación la experiencia que he tenido catando vinos naturales a mansalva en uno de los foros más adecuados para ello: la feria The Real Wine, que tuvo lugar en Londres el pasado mes de marzo.

Allí pude comprobar que la tendencia se encuentra en un momento álgido, con una ingente cantidad de viticultores comprometidos con esta filosofía repartidos por todo el viñedo global.

Y, ya que estamos, adelanto mis conclusiones: los llamados vinos naturales aportan riqueza y diversidad al panorama vinícola internacional, sobre todo en un momento en el que la viticultura convencional ofrece vinos de perfil muy parecido en cualquier lugar del mundo. En otras palabras, en tiempos de vinos clónicos, los vinos naturales se convierten en una fascinante alternativa para aquellos aficionados que buscamos la singularidad.

Tasting in London: the alternative to “cloned” wines All that said, I am now going to share with readers of this excellent publication my experience tasting an abundance of natural wines at one of the most appropriate forums to do so: The Real Wine Fair, which took place in London last March.

There I could see that the “Natural Wine” trend has become very popular, with a large number of winemakers from all over the world committed to this philosophy.

And, now that we have reached this point, I’ll bring forward and share my conclusions: wines referred to as “natural” bring richness and diversity to the international wine scene, particularly needed at a time when conventional viticulture is producing wines with very similar profiles from anywhere in the world. In other words, in a time of wine “clones”, natural wines are a fascinating alternative for those wine lovers who seek and value uniqueness.

Getting straight to the point, I would say that at the second edition of The Real Wine show there were hundreds of wines available for tasting. French in the majority, followed by Italians, a good representation from Spanish wineries (14 in total), Portuguese, Greek, Chilean, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans ... but the big surprise was to find a representation of 12 wineries from Georgia!

Yendo al grano, diré que en la segunda edición de The Real Wine había cientos de vinos para catar. Franceses, los que más, desde luego, seguidos por los italianos, una buena representación de españoles (14 bodegas), portugueses, griegos, chilenos, australianos, neozelandeses, sudafricanos... aunque la sorpresa mayúscula fue encontrarse con una representación de hasta ¡12 bodegas! de Georgia.

Por desgracia, no pude catarlos todos, pero sí los suficientes como para convertirme en un defensor acérrimo de los vinos naturales.

Me gustaron un par de vinos chilenos: el Cinsault Viejas Tinajas 2012, noble y bien estructurado, elaborado por la bodega De Martino a partir de uvas que crecen en el remoto viñedo de Itata y envejecido, claro, en tinajas; y el Villalobos Carignan Reserva 2011, que produce la joven bodega Villalobos a partir de un viñedo “salvaje” plantado en Colchagua hace más de sesenta años: un tinto ligero, fresco y de seductor carácter mineral que no pasa por madera.

Impresionantes me parecieron tres pinot noir australianos, elaborados en las colinas de Adelaida por tres firmes defensores de los vinos naturales, Tom Shobbrook, James Erskine y Anton van Klopper. El que más me sedujo fue el Tiers 2011 del Domaine Lucci, con un perfil elegante, fino y mineral que desmiente la teoría de que sólo se pueden elaborar grandes pinots en Borgoña. También probé un tinto de garnacha, Jauma 2011, de Blewitt Springs, bastante cálido. ¡Que contraste respecto a los finos pinots!

Entre los italianos, destacaré el blanco Vitovska 2009 elaborado en el Friuli por Benjamin Zidarich a partir de la exótica variedad vitovska, capaz de dar lugar a vinos complejos con gran potencial de guarda.

Y de la ingente representación francesa, mencionaré sólo –por no aburrir– a Olivier Cousin, uno de los “terroiristas” más destacados del Loira, un personaje divertido y excéntrico que, entre otras cosas, impone a sus importadores el traslado de sus vinos

Unfortunately, I could not taste all the wines, but I did try enough of them to become a strong advocate of natural wines.

I liked a couple of Chilean wines: a Cinsault Viejas Tinajas 2012, noble and well constructed, made by the De Martino bodega from grapes grown in the remote Itata wine region and aged,

of course, in jars, and the Villalobos Carignan Reserve 2011, produced by the young Villalobos winery from a “wild” vineyard planted in Colchagua over sixty years ago: a fresh, light red with a charming mineral character which is not oak aged.

I was very impressed by three Australian Pinot Noirs, made in the Adelaide Hills by three strong advocates of natural wines, Tom Shobbrook, James Erskine and Anton van Klopper. The one that most appealed to me was the Tiers 2011 from Domaine Lucci with a fine, elegant, mineral profile that disproves the theory that you can only produce great Pinots in Burgundy. I also tried a red Grenache, Jauma 2011, from Blewitt Springs, which was quite warm. What a contrast from fine Pinots!

Among the Italians, the Vitovska 2009 white stood out, made in Friuli by Benjamin Zidarich from the exotic Vitovska grape variety, which can produce complex wines with great ageing potential.

And from the huge French representation, so as not to bore you, I’ll only mention Olivier Cousin, one of the high profile “terroirists” in the Loire, an amusing, eccentric character who, among

en barco de vela. Sus vinos merecen la pena, como el Pur Breton 2009, suculento tinto de cabernet franc, o el Grolleau Pet Nau, interpretación de los tintos espumosos en clave natural.

También presentó un singular tinto espumoso Afros –la única bodega portuguesa presente en la feria–, elaborado a partir de la variedad vinhão, fresco y con una rica expresión de fruta roja. Esta casa también cuenta con un delicioso vinho verde, monovarietal de loureiro, con agradable textura y buena persistencia.

There was also a unique red sparkling wine, Afros - the only Portuguese winery present at the fair, made from the vinhão grape variety, fresh with a rich, red fruit expression. This wine house also produces a delicious vinho verde, a Loureiro single varietal with nice texture and long lasting flavours.

Y no puedo olvidarme, por supuesto, de los representantes españoles, que presentaron en Londres vinos de notable calidad. Jiménez-Landi, por ejemplo, que lidera la revolución de las garnachas en Méntrida, con tintos tan soberbios como The End o Ataúlfos. O bodegas Ponce, de Manchuela, cuyos tintos Pino y Pie Franco son una referencia para conocer la expresión más natural de la uva bobal. Y, por supuesto, Recaredo, que está demostrando la calidad que puede alcanzar el cava extremando el rigor durante todo el proceso de producción y dando relieve al carácter de la uva gracias a la viticultura biodinámica. Así, Recaredo es capaz de llevar al espumoso catalán a las cimas más altas con el excelso Turó d’en Mota 2002, un cava fino, profundo, de gran complejidad.

Junto a ellos, sorprendió la presencia de la bodega gallega Zárate, que tiene la particularidad de elaborar excelentes tintos en una tierra famosa por sus blancos, Rias Baixas. Sus monovarietales de Caiño Tinto 2011 y Loureiro Tinto 2011 son vinos espléndidos, plenos de vigor, frescura y carácter.

Como colofón, apuntaré que muchos de los vinos que he mencionado están llegando a España de la mano de Les Caves de Pyrène (www.lescaves.co.uk), empresa británica que está representada en España por Alberto Ruiz (alberto@lacavadepyrene. com). Un dato a tener en cuenta si se quiere conocer los vinos naturales en toda su dimensión.

And of course I cannot overlook the Spanish representatives, who presented wines of outstanding quality in London.

Jiménez-Landi, for example, a leader of the Garnacha revolution in Méntrida, with proud reds such as The End or Ataúlfos. Or Bodegas Ponce, from Manchuela, whose Pino and Pie Franco reds are references for anyone wishing to try a more natural expression of the Bobal grape. And of course, Recaredo, which illustrates the quality that cava can achieve when close care and attention are applied throughout the production process and the character of the grape is brought out through biodynamic viticulture. In this way Recaredo is able to raise Catalan sparkling wines to the highest peaks with the sublime Turo d’en Mota 2002, a fine, deep and very complex cava.

Alongside the Spanish representation, I was surprised by the presence of Galician winery, Zarate, which has the distinction of producing excellent reds in Rias Baixas, a region famous for its whites.

Its Caino red 2011 and Loureiro red 2011 single varietal wines are splendid, full of vigour, freshness and character.

Last but not least, I would mention that many of the wines I have cited are being brought to Spain by Les Caves de Pyrène (www.lescaves.co.uk), a British company which is represented in Spain by Alberto Ruiz (alberto@lacavadepyrene.com ). Take note if you are interested in exploring natural wines in all their glory. ●

El primer proyecto independiente de la bodega Vega Sicilia empezó a fraguarse en 1986 dando como resultado el nacimiento de Bodegas Alion en 1992. Comentario: Alion es un vino sólido, y es el colmo de la expresión de la uva Tinta Fina 100% madurada al sol y de forma inteligente en su vinificación. Su color es concentrado y oscuro y está bien sazonado por la madera fina. Su alma proveniente de viñedos de más de diez años, nace en el famoso triángulo de calidad: Peñafiel, Pesquera y Vega Sicilia, sobre un terreno arcillo-calcáreo. La crianza de dos años en barrica francesa nueva lo ennoblece y el reposo en botella de dos años más antes de su salida al mercado, lo perfila para llegar a nuestras mesas sin fisuras. El 2009 es sin duda uno de los mejores Alion de la década y se muestra ahora realmente fresco y jovial. Le auguramos una vida notable en los próximos diez años para un goce a raudales.

The Vega Sicilia bodega’s first independent project started to take shape from 1986 and resulted in the creation of Bodegas Alion in 1992. The Alvarez family was determined that it wanted to make a wine which would not be a second label to Vega Sicilia so, although the wine should share the company’s quality standards, it should be an independent entity and fend for itself. No sooner said than done! With Alión they have managed to produce a modern, attractive wine using brand new techniques and moderate ageing, the total opposite of the Vega Sicilia style. At the forefront, of course, is Xavier Ausás, the “oenological shadow” of the perfectionism of Don Pablo Alvarez.

Since its first harvest, Alión has successfully risen to meet a whole raft of expectations year after year, becoming a contemporary reference for the quality and seriousness of Ribera del Duero wine today.

Appearance: Dark cherry red with a garnet rim. Very intense colour.

Nose: Very fine. Remarkable maturity.

Red and black berries come through at first. Evident notes of ageing then emerge.

Spicy toasted, coffee, and cedar notes.

Interesting.

Palate: Structured. Fresher here than on the nose. Fruity, medium bodied, with good balance and a very long finish. Firm, elegant tannin. A thoroughbred.

Comment: Alion is a solid wine and the pinnacle of the expression of the Tinta Fina grape variety, fully ripened in the sun and intelligently vinified. Its colour is concentrated, dark and well-seasoned by the fine oak. Its soul arises from vines which are over ten years old and is born within the famous quality triangle of Peñafiel, Pesquera and Vega Sicilia on clay-limestone soil. Enobled by two years in new French oak and shaped by two more years of ageing in bottle before its release on the market, it is a flawless wine that reaches our dinner tables. The 2009 is certainly one of the decade’s best Alions and is now showing itself to be really fresh and jolly. We wish it a wonderful life over the next ten years to bring us an abundance of drinking pleasure.

El Tinto The Red Wine Interesante proyecto que nace de la mano de Viñas del Vero, una de las bodegas más importantes del Somontano (Aragón). Once años después de su fundación plantearon la idea de crear un vino icono que debiera nacer bajo el amparo de sus viñedos pero diferente en elaboración y crianza. Por este motivo habilitaron una bodega nueva adyacente que está integrada en la finca Blecua, más conocida en la zona como la Torre Blecua que data de finales del siglo XI, cuando era utilizada como lugar de retiro por los monjes benedictinos franceses. Blecua es el resultado de lo que Viñas del Vero llama la triple selección: de viñedos, de racimos y de barricas. Así, cada año, seleccionan los siete mejores viñedos de cuatro variedades de uva diferentes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha y Tempranillo con la finalidad de establecer la base. Después vuelven a seleccionar los mejores racimos y posteriormente, comienzan un artesanal y mimado proceso de elaboración que culmina con la selección de las mejores barricas de cada una de estas cuatro variedades de uva.

Nariz: Intensa. Muy especiado. Matices lácticos sobresalen al inicio. Recuerdos de fruta roja. Cerezas con caramelo, licor de casis. Cueros nuevos.

Boca: Por pulir. Aun con recuerdos evidentes del paso por barrica, sobresalen recuerdos de tostados, crema, confitura roja con cacao ligero. Final largo con buena acidez.

Comentario: Un vino diferente cada vez que aparece en el mercado, ese es el punto de partida de la premisa Blecua. Una novedad este 2008 que cubre las expectativas de una región que anduvo de moda durante la década pasada y que actualmente se ha visto ligeramente mermada de continuidad en todos los aspectos vínicos que la configuran.

El Blecua 2008 es un vino de corte moderno, tecnológicamente impecable e indudable proyección internacional que se alza con el trofeo de vino contundente y robusto en el pódium aragonés. Necesitará aun un tiempo en botella para perfeccionar el alma que se le presupone y seguramente evolucionará de manera notable la próxima década. En manos de Gonzalez Byass desde 2008, la marca recuperará su estela perdida de Top Ten, tan mal interpretada en los últimos años por el mercado. Tengan paciencia.

This is an interesting project from Viñas del Vero, one of the most important bodegas in Somontano (Aragon). Eleven years after its foundation, they came up with the idea of creating an iconic wine that would be born under the aegis of its vineyards but produced and aged in a different manner. They therefore fitted out a new winery alongside them on the Blecua estate, better known in the area as the “Torre Blecua”, which dates from the late 11th century when it was used as a retreat by French Benedictine monks. Blecua is the product of what Viñas del Vero refers to as a triple selection: vineyards, grapes and barrels. Every year, they select the seven best vineyards of four different grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Tempranillo, to create the base. They then select the best bunches and start a traditional and careful production process which culminates in the selection of the best barrels of each of these four grape varieties.

Appearance: Dark cherry red. Very intense colour.

Nose: Intense. Very spicy. Lactic nuances come through at the start. Hints of red fruit. Cherries with caramel, cassis liqueur. New leather.

Palate: Needs some polishing. Still shows obvious flavours from the time spent in oak, salient roasted aromas, cream, red jam with light cocoa. Long finish with good acidity.

Comment: The wine is different each time it appears on the market, according to Blecua’s guiding principle. The 2008 is a novelty that meets the expectations of a region which was in vogue for the past decade but which has suffered from a slight problem of continuity in all its winemaking activity. The Blecua 2008 is a modern style, technologically irreproachable wine with an undeniable international reputation, winning the trophy for most powerful and robust wine on the Aragon podium. It will still need some time in bottle to develop the soul that we imagine it has and it will no doubt evolve a great deal over the next decade. Part of Gonzalez Byass since 2008, and misunderstood in recent years by the market, the brand will regain its lost position in the Top Ten ranking. Be patient.

A finales de los ochenta, Mario Rotllant y Carme Daurella aterrizan en el barrio de La Estación, en la localidad de Haro, La Rioja, con la firme intención de aportar algo nuevo al mundo del vino. El resultado no pudo ser tan espléndido veinticinco años después.

Roda es hoy día un referente en la región y por extensión una de las bodegas más reconocidas del panorama vitivinícola español.

Su filosofía sigue como puntos básicos el uso sólo de variedades autóctonas de uva tinta, Tempranillo, Garnacha y Graciano; respeto absoluto a la añada; sólo vinos elaborados en la propiedad y finalmente hacer vinos que arranquen las entrañas del viñedo, suelo, clima, paisaje y sean hechos para disfrutar.

Vista: Negro profundo. Totalmente opaco.

Lagrima muy fina.

Nariz: Enormemente perfumado.

Abrumador. Poco a poco sobresalen las notas de frutos negros muy evidentes. Recuerdos de cacao muy marcados. Aromas de tierra húmeda. Con frescor. Muy agradable. Para deleitar.

Boca: Voluminoso, sedoso, de recreo en el paladar. Tanino finísimo y elegante. Sabores muy marcados de frutas del bosque, ahumados suaves y especies. Es realmente agradable al final. Tremendo.

Comentario: Cirsion nace de una simple conclusión desarrollada sobre los viñedos por parte de la gente de Roda. La observación y cata in situ de los racimos les hizo ver que algunas cepas eran capaces de dar un fruto con un alto nivel de equilibrio y plenitud más allá de los esperados en la uva de calidad. Estudiaron la singularidad del fenómeno en sus viñedos y reafirmaron la repetición del mismo durante varias cosechas dando como resultado en 1997 la aparición del primer Cirsion. Un vino con un tratamiento menor de madera que apenas llega a los doce meses y demuestra un volumen y grado de sedosidad sorprendente. Aunque les parezca exagerado, a todo el equipo de cata de Selectus Wines, este 2009, catado a ciegas como todos los demás, nos dejó con la boca abierta. Es realmente delicioso y aunque joven, extremadamente accesible y muy agradable de beber. Es un vino completo que mejorará con el paso del tiempo. Todo un éxito.

In the late eighties, Mario Rotllant and Carme Daurella arrived in the neighborhood of La Estación, in the Rioja town of Haro, firmly resolved to bring something new to the wine world. The result, twenty five years later, could not be more splendid. Today, Roda is a reference in the region and by extension one of the most well regarded bodegas on the Spanish wine scene. Its philosophy is founded on the following principles: use only native grape varieties, Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano; total respect for the vintage; only produce wines on the property and finally, make wine that draws out the guts of the vineyard, soil, climate, landscape, and wines which are made for enjoyment.

Appearance: Deep black. Totally opaque.

Very fine tears.

Nose: Highly perfumed. Overwhelming.

Very noticeable notes of black fruit gradually emerge. Very definite cocoa aromas.

Aromas of wet earth. Fresh. Very pleasant.

A delight.

Palate: Big, silky, pure pleasure on the palate. Very fine, elegant tannin. Very pronounced flavours of wild berries with soft smoky and spicy notes. Really nice on the finish. Terrific.

Comment: Cirsion was the result of a simple realisation which came to the Roda people from the vineyards. When observing and tasting the clusters of grapes in situ in the vineyards they noticed that some varieties were able to produce a fruit with a level of balance and fullness which was greater than that expected of quality grapes. They studied the uniqueness of the phenomenon in their vineyards and noted the repetition of the same phenomenon over several crops. This led to the appearance of the first Cirsion in 1997. The wine sees less oak, barely twelve months, and shows a volume and a surprising amount of silkiness. Although it may seem exaggerated, this 2009, tasted blind as all the wines are, left the entire Selectus Wines tasting team absolutely speechless. It is really delicious and although young, extremely accessible and very pleasant drinking. It is a complete wine which will improve over time. A massive hit.

El Tinto The Red Wine Nueva incursión de SW por la puerta grande en la mágica esencia que nos brindan los fabulosos vinos del Priorat esta vez de la mano del Celler Mas Doix. Aunque cuentan con la maravillosa historia vínica que les precede, pues iniciaron su camino hace ya cinco generaciones de la mano de la familia Doix, en 1998 reinventaron su producción uniéndose con la familia Llagostera y desde entonces no han dejado de sorprender al mercado con sus fantásticos vinos de corte elegante y fresco. Situados en el pueblo de Poboleda, gozan de una climatología más benévola que otros pueblos del Priorat y eso les otorga un carácter más fresco en el viñedo donde el fruto madura de manera más gradual y paulatina. Celler Mas Doix es una bodega minuciosa, artesanal y de notable calidad que respeta al máximo la tradición y que refleja fielmente la personalidad del suelo y las viñas del Priorat.

Vista: Seductor color rojo picota oscuro.

Nariz: Tímida. Necesita algo de tiempo.

Fruta negra muy evidente. Notas de tostados y chocolates muy elegantes. Fragancia mineral adornada con piezas de cuero nuevo.

Boca: Sabroso. Con muchas sensaciones frutales. Es de un volumen medio. Más fresco que en nariz, es realmente largo y contundente. Su buena elaboración incita a seguir bebiendo.

Comentario: Doix es un portento de vino que hechiza y enamora tras cada sorbo. El distintivo superior de la bodega nace de 4 hectáreas de viñedo situadas en “costers de llicorella” entre 350 y 500 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Las uvas provienen de cepas centenarias de garnacha y cariñena plantadas alrededor de 1902. Con 16 meses de crianza en roble francés, el vino muestra un equilibrio notable a fecha de hoy. El 2009 tiene alma prioratina que arranca de las raíces más viscerales de la región, adornado contantemente de un frescor inaudito en sus colegas de cancha, pues sin duda Doix, es uno de los grandes integrantes del Dream Team nacional que no puede faltar en la colección de cualquier amante de los vinos sabios. Un gran ejemplo que nos hace disfrutar ahora y que mejorará en los próximos cinco años sin ninguna fisura. Hermosa pizarra fundida en la copa.

Another Selectus Wines raid through the front door into the magical essence of the fabulous wines of Priorat, this time those of Celler Mas Doix. Although they have a wonderful wine history behind them, the journey having started with the Doix family five generations ago, they “reinvented” their wines in 1998 when they joined forces with the Llagostera family. Since then they continue to surprise the market with their fantastic, elegant and fresh style wines.

Located in the village of Poboleda, they enjoy more clement weather than other Priorat villages, which brings freshness to the vineyards where the fruit matures more slowly and gradually. Celler Mas Doix is a tiny, artisanal bodega of remarkable quality which respects tradition as much as possible and which reflects the personality of the Priorat soil and vines with accuracy.

Appearance: Seductive dark cherry red colour.

Nose: Shy. Needs a bit of time. Very evident black fruit. Very elegant notes of toast and chocolate. Mineral fragrance embellished with new leather.

Palate: Tasty. With many fruity sensations.

Medium bodied. Fresher than on the nose, it is really long and powerful. Well made, you just want to carry on drinking it.

Comment: Doix is a prodigy of a wine which casts a spell and seduces with every sip. The bodega’s distinctive top wine is from 4 hectares of vineyards located on “costers” (terraces) of “licorella” (slate soil) between 350 and 500 metres above sea level. The grapes come from old Grenache and Carignan vines planted in around 1902. With 16 months of aging in French oak, the wine today shows remarkable balance. The 2009 has a Priorat soul that draws from the most “visceral” roots of the region and shows a freshness unheard of from its playmates in the region.

This is because Doix is undoubtedly one of the greatest players within the Spanish “Dream Team” which should be included in every wine lover’s collection of “wise wines”. This is a fine example that can be enjoyed now but which will improve flawlessly over the next five years. Beautiful melted slate in a glass.

Gran parte de la identidad catalana de la Familia Torres y sus vinos, pasa por comprender la importancia que tiene este vino de finca dentro de la gama de productos Premium que produce la bodega y concretamente Grans Muralles, amparado bajo la Denominación de Origen de Conca de Barberá, que debe su nombre a las murallas que protegían el monasterio de Poblet de las guerras y los mercenarios, es un claro ejemplo del compromiso iniciado por Torres hace ya 30 años con el fin de recuperar variedades autóctonas ancestrales casi extinguidas, para producir vinos de altísima calidad. En 1980 empezaron con la variedad Garró, incorporada en este 2007. En una próxima edición del mismo vino se unirá la recién recuperada variedad Querol. Este proyecto basa su metodología en cinco ejes claves: búsqueda de variedades, identificación y categorización, valoración del potencial enológico, saneamiento y reproducción de la cepa y, finalmente, adaptación al campo.

Vista: Rojo picota oscura de capa alta y presencia de lágrima en copa y abundante.

Nariz: Agradable. Intensos aromas de especias dulces, bayas maduras, cereza, regaliz y notas minerales. Muy complejo.

Boca: Sabroso, con cuerpo. Mucha presencia de fruta negra, sabores maduros, especies e incienso en el paladar. Buen tanino domado, con un final largo y de buena acidez.

Comentario: La identidad inconfundible de Grans Muralles se encuentra en los pedregosos suelos de pizarra (Licorella), pero también en las variedades que lo integran. Tras un siglo de la plaga de la filoxera, Torres consiguió recuperar variedades autóctonas extinguidas utilizando modernas técnicas de viticultura. Estas variedades unidas a la Garnacha tinta, Cariñena y la Monastrell conforman el espíritu de este harmonioso 2007 que ha sido criado durante 18 meses en barrica, suavizando su carácter hasta producir sensaciones de vértigo realmente sabrosas. Es sin duda uno de los grandes vinos del panorama nacional con muchísima autenticidad. Vale la pena probar y disfrutar este magnífico vino tinto de finca que nos trae a la mesa buena memoria de tiempos pasados. Perfecto para beber ahora con casi seis años e ideal aun para guardar una década más.

Garnacha Negra – Cariñena – Monastrell Garró – Samsó

Much of the Catalan identity of the Torres family and its wines, lies in understanding the importance of this estate wine within the range of premium products produced by the bodega. Owing its name to the walls which protected the monastery of Poblet from wars and mercenaries, Grans Muralles, a Conca de Barberá Denomination of Origin, is a clear illustration of the commitment made by Torres, 30 years ago, to recover almost extinct ancestral native grape varieties to produce wines of the highest quality. In 1980 they began with the Garró grape variety, which went into this 2007 vintage. In future vintages of this wine it will be joined by the newly recovered Querol grape variety The project’s methodology is based on five key axes: search for the grape varieties, identification and categorization, assessment of the oenological potential, sanitation and reproduction of the strain and finally adaptation to the field.

Appearance: Dark cherry red hue of strong intensity, abundant tears in the glass.

Nose: Pleasant. Intense aromas of sweet spice, ripe berries, cherry, liquorice and mineral notes. Very complex.

Palate: Tasty, full bodied. Loads of black fruit, ripe flavours, spices and incense on the palate. Nice tamed tannin with a long finish and good acidity.

Comment: Grans Muralles’ unmistakable identity comes from the stony slate soils (Licorella), as well as the grape varieties which go into it. Over the century since phylloxera, Torres has managed to recover extinct indigenous varieties using modern viticultural techniques. These varieties blended with Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre together create the spirit of this harmonious 2007 which has been aged for 18 months in barrel, softening its character to produce delicious, dizzying sensations. It is definitely one of the great wines on the Spanish scene, very authentic.

This magnificent estate red wine is worth trying and savouring. It brings to the table fond memories of times past. Perfect for enjoying now, at hardly six years of age, yet ideal for laying down for another decade.

El Tinto The Red Wine Vinos de Benjamín Romeo son la bendita satisfacción de saber que aun hoy día hay quien arriesga en el mundo del vino sin importar las modas o las directrices de la historia. Benjamín es la persona que está detrás de estos vinos que desde su primera añada han cosechado infinidad de buenas críticas por parte de profesionales y consumidores.

Sus vinos son vinos con alma y son para muchos, referencias de culto. Su historia se inicia en 1996 en el municipio riojano de San Vicente de la Sonsierra y entre una cueva y un garaje empiezan a forjar al mito.

En 2008 se instalan por fin en la nueva bodega Contador, en el centro del territorio que ocupan los diversos viñedos de la propiedad.

Practican la biodinámica total, trazando así un compromiso real con el territorio y ofreciendo vinos más puros y personales, que van más allá de las tendencias comerciales.

Taninos muy finos bien definidos. Sabrosas notas frutales. Ligeramente licoroso al final.

Comentario: La Cueva del Contador fue el primer vino que elaboró en 1996 Benjamín Romeo en una cueva centenaria bajo el castillo de San Vicente de la Sonsierra que hacía poco había adquirido. Después de varios años haciendo pruebas llegaría en el año 2000 el Contador de los 100 puntos que llevó a la bodega al estrellato internacional.

Este 2010 es un carrusel de sensaciones. Aun por afinar en botella, se muestra realmente sabroso. Es carnoso y persistente y los 18 meses de crianza le han forjado un estilo fino y elegante. Procede de siete parcelas concretas y su producción es limitada a menos de once mil botellas. Vale la pena hacerse con una si quieren descubrir el secreto de los vinos más misteriosos de la Rioja, antesala del hermano mayor Contador. Disfrútenlo sin vacilar durante la próxima década.

Benjamin Romeo’s wines give us the blessed satisfaction of knowing that even today there are those who take risks in the wine world regardless of fashion or the dictates of the past. Benjamin is the man behind these wines which, since their first vintage, have received countless rave reviews from wine trade professionals and consumers. His wines are wines with soul and for many are cult references. Benjamin’s story began in 1996 in the Rioja town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra when, between his cave and his parents’ garage, he began to forge the myth. In 2008 they finally moved to the new Contador winery in the middle of land occupied by the property’s various vineyards. They use totally biodynamic methods thereby making a real commitment to the land and producing purer, more personal wines which go beyond commercial trends.

Appearance: Bright cherry of strong intensity. Thick tears.

Nose: Complex. Very fine and deep.

Noticeable notes of wet earth. Succession of aromas reminiscent of red and black fruits. Subtle traces of barrel aging.

Palate: Very fresh, with medium body.

Fine, well defined tannins. Delicious fruity notes. Slightly liqueur-like on the finish. Very long. A real treat.

Comment: La Cueva del Contador was the first wine produced in 1996

by Benjamin Romeo in a century-old cave which he had recently acquired beneath the Castillo de San Vicente de la Sonsierra. After several years experimenting, Contador, which was to be awarded the famous 100 points, appeared in 2000, catapulting the bodega to international stardom. This 2010 vintage is a roller coaster of sensations. Although it still needs some rounding out in bottle, it is already really delicious. It is meaty and long-lingering and the 18 months of aging have created a fine, elegant style.

It comes from seven specific plots and its production is limited to under eleven thousand bottles. Worth getting hold of one if you want to discover the secret of Rioja’s most mysterious wines and a prelude to its big brother, Contador. Don’t hesitate to enjoy it over the next decade.

Interesante proyecto iniciado a mediados de la pasada década de la mano del sudafricano Eben Sadie y el alemán Dominik A. Huber que representan, posiblemente, la mejor versión de lo que se ha denominado la segunda revolución del Priorat. La bodega está situada en el pueblo de Torroja del Priorat y su estilo es claramente de inspiración borgoñona. Elaboran cinco vinos tintos y dos excelentes vinos blancos ambos muy difíciles de conseguir. Su filosofía es poco intervencionista e intentan que los vinos sean realmente un fiel reflejo del suelo y la variedad que los configuran.

Vista: Rojo picota oscuro con ribete violáceo.

Presencia de lágrima fina.

Nariz: Compleja, muy agradable.

Realmente frutal, con notas de pétalos de flor roja, notas de hierbas frescas. Muy natural. Sin aditivos que distraigan.

Boca: Redonda pero muy viva. Recuerdos otra vez frutales. Especialmente fresco y mineral con un final largo. Muy sabroso, con personalidad.

Comentario: Les Manyes es uno de los dos grandes vinos que elabora Terroir al Limit.

Concretamente es la pareja de baile del reconocido Les Tosses. La peculiaridad de este atípico Priorat moderno es, no sólo de ser un monovarietal de Garnatxa sino también, que procede de una finca, cercana a la montaña de la Figuera, en la que los suelos no son los típicos de pizarra (llicorella) sino que hay tiza, arcilla, arena… tierras completamente diferentes que da terrenos mucho más frescos, por lo que protegen más las raíces y las plantas y pueden producir un vino muy fino, elegante en altura y con gran personalidad.

Este es sin duda uno de los grandes ejemplos de vino a seguir y que se coloca rápidamente en la cúspide de los vinos mejor puntuados y valorados por el público y la crítica internacional. Un vino fantástico para beber ahora y que evolucionará favorablemente los próximos cinco años. De tesis.

100% Garnacha

This interesting project was begun in the middle of the last decade by South African, Eben Sadie and German, Dominik A. Huber who are possibly the best representatives of what has been called Priorat’s “second revolution”. The bodega is located in the village of Torroja del Priorat and its style is distinctly Burgundy-inspired. They produce five red wines and two excellent whites, both very difficult to get hold of.

Their philosophy is “minimum intervention” and they try to ensure that the wines are a true reflection of the soil and the variety that go into them.

Appearance: Dark cherry red with a garnet rim. Fine tears.

Nose: Complex, very nice. Really fruity, with red flower petals and fresh herbal notes. Very natural. No distracting additives.

Palate: Round but very crisp. Again there are fruit aromas. Especially fresh and mineral with a long finish. Very tasty, with personality.

Comment: Les Manyes is one of the two great wines made by Terroir al Limit. It is the dance partner of the renowned Les Tosses. The special characteristic of this unusual, modern Priorat is not so much the fact that it is a single varietal, Garnatxa, but that it comes from an estate near the Figuera mountain, where the soils are not the typical slate (licorella) but chalk, clay and sand, etc. This completely different terrain creates a much cooler terroir which better protects the roots and plants and is able to produce a very fine wine, of extreme elegance and great personality. This is undoubtedly a fine example of a wine to follow which quickly places itself on the cusp of those wines which are highly rated and much appreciated by the general public and international critics.

A fantastic wine which can be enjoyed now and which will age well over the next five years. A thesis wine.

El Tinto The Red Wine Una de las revelaciones de los últimos años en Ribera del Duero. La bodega contigua que linda con las más renombradas propiedades de la región, está situada en la famosa Milla de Oro donde la carretera se abre camino entre nombres que marean en las cartas de vino de todo el mundo. Y ahí nace Finca Villacreces que, ahora en manos de la gente de Artevino (2004), ha catapultado su nombre en los mercados foráneos gracias a la calidad de sus vinos y por la notable y excelente relación calidad precio.

Considerada la “joyita” del grupo, la familia Antón tiene aquí una finca compuesta por 115 hectáreas de las que 64 están destinadas al viñedo y donde la mayoría de uva es Tinta fina. Elaboran tres vinos tintos diferentes que aúnan tradición y tecnología, elegancia y sobriedad.

Vista: Rojo cereza intenso con tonos granates. Muy atractivo. Presencia de lágrima fina.

Nariz: Muy expresiva, con enorme carga frutal. Recuerdos de fruta negra, regaliz y barnices ligeros. Desparecen y dan paso a cacao y café licoroso.

Boca: Tanino bien armado, es robusto pero elegante. Con evidentes recuerdos de fruta negra algo madura. Buen recorrido, dulzón y con un final muy largo. Sabroso y más contundente que refinado.

Comentario: Menos de 2.400 botellas producidas de este magnífico ejemplar de la añada 2009. El vino de Pago más ambicioso de la bodega que realmente enamora a quien lo prueba. Ha sido elaborado únicamente con uva Tinta Fina que nace de viñedos viejos y posteriormente criado durante 14 meses en barricas francesas de grano fino.

Solo aparece en añadas excepcionales y les prometemos que este no defrauda un ápice.

Es goloso, tremendamente vigoroso y muy muy largo. La joya de la “joyita” de Artevino que puede empezar a codearse con los laureados y reconocidos vecinos. A seguir de ahora en adelante sin ninguna duda, lo disfrutaran hoy pero mejorará en los próximos cinco años de manera excelente. Sin prisas.

This is one of the Ribera del Duero’s revelations of recent years. The bodega, bordering the most renowned properties in the region, is located on the famous “Golden Mile” where the road cuts through names that dazzle on wine lists around the world.

This is where the Finca Villacreces estate, now belonging to the Artevino Group (2004), was created, its name catapulted into international markets due to the quality of its wines and their incredible value for money. Belonging to the Antón family and considered the “little jewel” of the Group, the estate covers 115 hectares of which 64 are vineyards, where most of the grapes grown are Tinta Fina. They make three different red wines which combine tradition and technology, elegance and sobriety.

Appearance: Intense cherry red with garnet tones. Very attractive. Fine tears.

Nose: Very expressive, with tremendous concentration of fruit. Aromas of black fruit, liquorice and light varnish. These disappear and give way to cocoa and coffee liqueur.

Palate: Well armed tannin, robust yet elegant. Noticeable aromas of fairly ripe black fruit. Nice across the palate, sweet and with a very long finish. Flavorsome and more powerful than it is refined.

Comment: Less than 2,400 bottles have been produced of this magnificent example of the 2009 vintage. This is the bodega’s most ambitious single vineyard wine, captivating anyone who tries it. It has been made solely from Tinta Fina grapes from old vines and aged for 14 months in fine grained French oak barrels. This wine is only produced in exceptional vintages and we promise that it does not disappoint one bit. It is delicious, extremely vigorous and very, very long. The jewel of the “little jewel” of the Artevino Group can start hobnobbing with its award-winning and recognized neighbours. Definitely to be followed from now on. It can be enjoyed now but will develop extremely well over the next five years. No rush.

En la región de Toro, vecina a Ribera del Duero, pusieron sus ojos hace ya más de dos décadas habidos elaboradores foráneos que observaron como las viejas y raras vides de Tempranillo que ahí nacían, sobre suelos pedregosos, plantadas de manera irregular y podadas de manera arbitraria en un aparente caos descuidado, daban un fruto de concentración, sabor y frescor singular, relativamente distinto al que podemos apreciar en regiones limítrofes. Telmo Rodríguez no fue ajeno a ese análisis y sus buenos ojos de “fly-winemaker”, le hicieron aterrizar en la denominación para estudiar y aprender de las sabiendas de sus viñedos.

Vista: Rojo picota oscuro. Muy brillante.

Nariz: Intensa. Con recuerdos de frutos rojos muy evidentes envueltos en madera fina.

Notas achocolatadas y balsámicas juntas.

Boca: Sorprendentemente fresco. Con buen volumen. Sabores muy frutales, notas dulzonas, con un final de boca mineral. De trago largo si te despistas.

Comentario: Espectacular ejemplo de vino Toro bien conducido. Potencia afinada hasta el último vértice. Vestido con una imagen bien reconocible, Pago la Jara es un espectacular vino tinto que nos hace vibrar. Se desea en cada sorbo y se disfruta de manera soberbia. Mucho más accesible que otros notables especímenes de la región, la elegancia es constante en todas sus añadas.

El 2008 se evidencia recto, fino y sabroso.

Asusta lo inmediato que se muestra y en el fondo, nos gusta que sea así. Sin maquillajes que lo recarguen, es fruta concentrada encerrada en un misterio que se desvela en cada copa y que nos hace gozar del vino bien llevado a la mesa. Es quizás uno de los vinos de Telmo menos conocidos por el gran público y que bien merece ser descubierto. Nace de 5 pequeñas parcelas, tiene una crianza muy sabia de año y medio y su producción se limita a 3.565 botellas que andarán buscadas dada su notable calidad. No se lo pierdan.

100% Tinta de Toro y Albillo

Over two decades ago, wine producers from outside the region cast their eyes over the Spanish region of Toro, a neighbour of Ribera Del Duero. They observed how the rare, old Tempranillo vines, born on its stony soils, planted unevenly and arbitrarily pruned in apparent neglected chaos, produced grapes with a concentration, flavour and unique freshness which differed somewhat from the grapes produced in bordering regions. Telmo Rodríguez was involved in this analysis and he came, with his “flying-winemaker” vision, to this denominated region to study and learn from the wisdom of its vineyards.

Appearance: Dark cherry red. Very bright.

Nose: Intense, with very obvious aromas of red fruits wrapped in fine oak. A combination of chocolatey and balsamic notes.

Palate: Surprisingly fresh, with good body. Very fruity flavours, sweet notes, with a mineral finish. You will just carry on drinking it if you are not careful.

Comment: Spectacular example of a well made Toro wine. This wine is power as tuned up as it can possibly be. Wearing a well recognizable image, Pago la Jara is a spectacular wine which makes all the senses vibrate. It is charming with every sip and is superb drinking. Far more accessible than other notable examples from the region, elegance is a constant feature of all its vintages. The 2008 shows itself to be direct, fine and full of flavour. Its immediacy is frightening, but deep down we like it that way. Not heavy with make-up, it shows concentrated fruit wrapped in a mystery that is revealed in each glass and gives us the pleasure of having a well-made wine on the table. It is perhaps one of the least known of Telmo’s wines by the general public and it deserves to be discovered.

Produced in 5 small vineyard plots, it has been intelligently aged for 18 months and its production is limited to 3,565 bottles which, given its remarkable quality, will be highly sought. Don’t miss out.

Proyecto joven y renovador nacido en el “Baix Empordá”, Catalunya, donde apenas ocho hectáreas de viñedo rodeadas de bosque puramente mediterráneo dan como resultado la interesante propuesta vinícola de esta bodega amable, conducida por el matrimonio Jones-Polanco. Sorprendieron desde el primer momento por su notable calidad en los dos vinos iniciales que lanzaron al mercado hace apenas un lustro. Su trabajo se rige puramente por los principios biodinámicos, buscando aglutinar un entorno sostenible que dé lo mejor de las variedades producidas. Los rendimientos por cepa son mínimos, dando como resultado la concentración absoluta del fruto concebido. Año tras año se materializa de manera empírica la simbiosis entre el entorno y el vino producido dando notables alegrías a los amantes de los vinos singulares.

Vista: Amarillo pajizo intenso, limpio y brillante Nariz: Notas evidentes de madera barnizada sobresalen al inicio dejando paso a delicadas flores amarillas adornadas con anisados muy evidentes Boca: Contundente en su entrada, demuestra un volumen medio alto. Recuerdos frutales ligeramente dulces como las naranjas escarchadas. Muy sabroso.

Comentario: Notable ejemplo de vino blanco catalán que va mucho más allá de la simpleza dictatorial de los blancos ligeros que se induce, de manera errónea, en el litoral mediterráneo español. Y es que aunque no lo crean, este magnífico blanco 2011 tiene la fuerza y contundencia suficiente para guardarse aun un par de años más y disfrutar con su fantástica evolución en botella. Es robusto, cálido y ligeramente anisado, con un volumen suficientemente capaz de lidiar con todo un ágape sin arrugarse. Bonito ejemplo de vino paisajístico del que poco más de 3.000 botellas han sido producidas.

This is a new innovative project born in the “Baix Empordá” in Catalonia, where just eight hectares of vineyards surrounded by pure Mediterranean forest have created an interesting wine proposition from this friendly bodega, run by husband and wife team, Guy Jones and Maria Jesus Polanco. They surprised people right from the start with the outstanding quality of their two first wines released only a few years back. Their work is governed purely by biodynamic principles in order to create a sustainable environment which brings out the best of the grape varieties grown. Yields per vine are minimal, resulting in totally concentrated fruit.

Year after year, this symbiosis between the environment and the wine produced takes place in an empirical manner, to the delight of lovers of unique wines.

Appearance: Intense straw-yellow hue, clean and bright.

Nose: Noticeable varnished wood notes initially giving way to delicate yellow flowers embellished with very prominent aniseed.

Palate: Powerful on entry showing medium to full body. Light, fruity, slightly sweet, candied orange peel type aromas.

Very tasty.

Comment: A remarkable example of a Catalan white wine that goes well beyond the tyrannical simplicity of the light white wines which are mistakenly encouraged on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. And believe it or not, this magnificent 2011 white wine shows sufficient power and strength to age superbly well in bottle over a couple more years. It is robust, warm and slightly aniseed-flavoured, with enough body to complement a full meal without flagging. A lovely illustration of a landscape wine of which just over 3,000 bottles have been produced.

Espumosos Sparkling wines De carácter emprendedor y transgresor, Josep Mitjans hace sus primeras mil botellas en 1985 con tan solo 16 años junto a un puñado de amigos, en un antiguo refugio antiaéreo que los republicanos construyeron en el aeródromo de Vilobí del Penedés durante la guerra civil. Loxarel toma su nombre de la variedad reina del Penedés, la uva Xarel·lo, tan denostada hace unos años y tan reivindicada de nuevo como máxima expresión del territorio. La bodega siempre ha practicado una viticultura respetuosa con el entorno y desde hace ya ocho años su metodología se rige por los impulsos biodinámicos, cerrando así un círculo virtuoso en su propia finca de 22 hectáreas.

Vista: Amarillo dorado no muy intenso con burbuja muy pequeña. Ligeramente nublado en copa.

Nariz: Cambiante. De notable intensidad. Evidentes notas que nos recuerdan el constante contacto de las lías. Bollería, paja mojada, frutos secos. Poco a poco aparecen notas frutales maduras muy evidentes, helado de vainilla y pasas.

Boca: Cremoso, con vigor y contundencia.

Recuerdos ahora de orejones, almendra blanca y piña en almíbar. Carbónico muy sutil. Bastante largo en boca.

Comentario: Espumoso de calidad sin parangón que ha detonado la salida oficial de la bodega del amparo que otorga el Consejo Regulador del Cava, convirtiéndose así en un vino singular y que deja de regirse por las normativas impuestas por el corsé de la Denominación de Origen. Una liberación necesaria si se quiere retar al mercado habitual con este arriesgado y a la vez excelente espumoso, que toma su nombre de los 109 meses que reposó antes de salir al mercado. Es un espumoso sin maquillaje, sin degüelle previo, es decir, parido con sus lías. Manoproteínas de origen vínico que no son más que levaduras que perecieron en el interior de la botella una vez finalizaron la autolisis y que jamás fueron retiradas, dándonos así la oportunidad de tener un vino en constante evolución.

El resultado es un prodigio de la simpleza hecha arte. Un desafiante producto no apto para el consumidor de carácter clásico poco interesado en descubrir más allá de la etiqueta.

Una delicia para el que quiera experimentar y plantearse preguntas después de cada sorbo.

In 1985, at only 16 years of age, Josep Mitjans, with his entrepreneurial, inventive character, made his first thousand bottles of wine with a handful of friends in a former bomb shelter on the Vilobí del Penedes airfield built by the Republicans in the Spanish civil war. Loxarel takes its name from the queen of Penedés grape varieties, the Xarel.lo, vilified a few years back but then claimed once more to be the greatest expression of local terroir. The bodega has always practiced environmentally-friendly viticulture and for the past eight years its methodology has been governed by biodynamic rhythms, thus closing a virtuous circle in its own 22 hectare estate.

Appearance: Gentle, golden yellow with very small bubbles. Slightly cloudy in the glass.

Nose: Changing, with considerable intensity. Distinct notes which remind us that the cava was in constant contact with its lees. Pastries, wet straw, nuts. Notes, particularly of ripe fruit, vanilla ice cream and raisins gradually come through.

Palate: Creamy, with vigour and power, followed by aromas of sun dried peaches/ apricots (orejones), white almond and pineapple in syrup. Very subtle carbon dioxide. Fairly long on the palate.

Note: A sparkling wine of unparalleled quality that triggered Loxarel’s official exit from the protection afforded by Cava’s Regulatory Board, thus making this a unique cava which no longer governed by the regulations imposed by the restrictive designation of origin. This freedom is essential if you seek to challenge the traditional market with a risky yet excellent sparkling wine, which takes its name from the 109 months it rested before its release on to the market. It is a sparkling wine which has not been “made up” or “disgorged” i.e. it remains in contact with its lees. Wine mannoproteins are simply yeasts which have died and been left in the bottle after autolysis thereby giving us a constantly evolving wine. The result is a marvel of simplicity made art. A defiant product which may not suit the classic consumer little interested in going beyond the label. A treat for those who want to experiment, sip and muse.

Henri Giraud es una casa familiar de la champagne desconocida para el gran público pero apreciada y muy bien valorada por los avezados conocedores del mundo del champagne. Con una larga tradición vitivinícola en su historia, iniciada en el siglo XVII, no fue hasta 1990 que empezó su andadura actual en la que la doceava generación, capitaneada por Claude Giraud, relanzó al mundo entero su bodega enclavada en Aÿ, aunando lo mejor de la tradición con la intensidad nacida de sus pagos Grand Cru. Sus producciones son siempre muy exclusivas y mantienen siempre un carácter contundente para nada ligero ni efímero.

Son vinos grandilocuentes, sabrosos y gran baluarte de la artesanía vinícola. En Henri Giraud se mantiene un alto estándar de valores morales y ellos mismos los resumen en: tener pasión por el vino y las viñas, ser observador para trabajar en armonía con el medio ambiente, ser receptivos a las nuevas ideas bajo ninguna restricción para finalmente así llegar al corazón del viñedo.

Vista: Hermoso color anaranjado, con burbujas finas suavemente ascendentes.

Nariz: Notas ahumadas, de perfil algo oxidativo. Sobresalen flores marchitas, anisados y especies. Muy compleja.

Boca: Robusta, con recuerdos de manzanas cocidas muy evidentes que se mezclan con las notas de nuez, madera y vainilla. Suave textura sedosa. Largo y profundo.

Comentario: Producido a partir de la extraordinaria cosecha de 2002, Argonne es la nueva creación de la bodega que ha sido lanzada al mercado durante este 2013. Se compone de tres cuartas partes de Pinot Noir y el resto es completado con Chardonnay envejecido en barricas de roble del bosque de Argonne. Son apenas ocho mil botellas numeradas individualmente, decoradas con letras de oro fino y sellado con la tradicional grapa. Es un champagne con una estructura firme, mucha personalidad y sensaciones cambiantes en la copa constantemente. Un excelente vino que concentra un delicioso bouquet de madera fina con madurez superlativa. Es una joya a descubrir que puede disfrutarse sin límites o puede reservarse para sorprender en una cena especial.

Henri Giraud is a family champagne house unknown to the general public but appreciated and highly prized by experienced connoisseurs of the champagne world. With a long wine tradition throughout its history which began in the 17th century, it was not until 1990 that the champagne house started down its current route. This is when the 12th generation, headed by Claude Giraud, re-introduced the champagne house to the world. Located in Aÿ, the Henri Giraud champagne house marries the best of tradition with the intensity born in its Grand Cru vineyards. Its champagnes are always very exclusive and always show a strong character which is anything but light and ephemeral. These wines are grandiose, flavoursome and great bastions of hand crafted champagne. The champagne house maintains very high moral values which can be resumed as: be passionate about wine and the vineyards, be observant in order to work in harmony with the environment, and be receptive to new ideas without bounds and, in so doing, get to the heart of the vineyards.

Appearance: Beautiful orange colour, with fine, gently rising bubbles.

Nose: Smoky notes and a somewhat oxidative profile. Salient aromas of withered flowers, anise and spices. Very complex.

Palate: Robust, with noticeable aromas of cooked apples blending with notes of walnut, oak and vanilla. Soft silky texture. Long and deep.

Comment: Produced from the extraordinary 2002 harvest, Argonne is the champagne house’s newest creation launched on the market only this year. It is made up of three quarters Pinot Noir and the remainder Chardonnay aged in oak barrels from the Argonne Forest. There are only eight thousand individually numbered bottles, decorated with fine gold letters and sealed with the traditional staple. It is a champagne with a firm structure, great personality and sensations that are constantly changing in the glass. An excellent champagne which concentrates a delicious bouquet of fine oak with superlative maturity. It is a gem just waiting to be discovered, which can be enjoyed now or saved as a surprise for a special dinner.

De trabajo artesanal y sumamente escrupuloso en su elaboración, es el resultado de una singular mezcla de variedades clásicas de la trilogía de la zona y mezcla de añadas que configuran finalmente este rompecabezas, que abandera el mismo espíritu que su homónimo blanco, Krug Grande Cuvée. Un champagne que reposa cinco años en bodega antes de salir al mercado y que rezuma elegancia por los cuatro costados.

Vista: Bonito color rosado cobrizo.

Presencia de burbuja fina. Seductor.

Nariz: Fragante. Notas de frutillos rojos sobresalen al inicio dando paso a aromas más especiados y de bollería.

Boca: De entrada seca, tiene fuerza y contundencia. Recuerdos florales al inicio, pétalo de rosa, fruta roja, membrillo, especiados e incluso cascaras tostadas de café hacia el final. Muy elegante y largo. Delicioso.

Comentario: Elaborado con una fuerte presencia de Pinot Noir en estado puro, sin vinificación en blanco, no es un espumoso frívolo o banal; es uno de los rosados más serios y gastronómicos de las grandes maisones. Infinitamente agradable, es ideal para deslumbrar en cualquier mesa. Un champagne que lleva el sello Krug de manera excelsa. Magnífico ejemplo de champagne con enorme personalidad y riqueza sensorial que aúna de manera perfecta elegancia y finura con muy buen peso en boca y sabroso final. Es la estrella a descubrir para los que quieran olvidar esos sobrepasados espumosos rosados que solo saben a fresa y abusan del vestido rosa. Un buen capricho de fantasía que deben probar al menos una vez en la vida.

From the magnificent, exclusive Maison Krug, comes this delicious and rare example of a rosé champagne, considered the “serious” brother to deluxe champagnes. It is the result of superb, meticulous craftsmanship, a unique blend of the region’s trio of classic grape varieties and a blend of vintages. These all make up the various pieces of this jigsaw puzzle which displays the same spirit as its namesake white, Krug Grande Cuvée. Krug rosé rests in the cellars for five years before its release on to the market and exudes elegance from head to toe.

Appearance: Nice coppery pink hue with fine bubbles. Seductive.

Nose: Fragrant. Salient notes of red berries at first, giving way to aromas of spices and pastries.

Palate: Dry on entry, with power and strength. A hint of floral type aromas at first, rose petals, red fruit, quince and spices and even roasted coffee bean shells towards the finish. Very elegant and long.

Delicious.

Comment: Made with a large proportion of Pinot Noir in its purest state, without vinification as a white white, this sparkling wine is neither frivolous nor banal. It is one of the most serious, gastronomic rosé champagnes from the great Maisons.

Infinitely pleasing, this champagne will dazzle at any meal and wears the Krug seal superbly well. It is a magnificent example of a champagne with great personality and sensory richness, perfectly combining elegance and finesse with very good weight on the palate and a finish which is full of flavour. It is a star of a champagne waiting to be discovered by drinkers uninterested in those overdone rosé sparklers which only taste of strawberries and take advantage of the rosé hue.

This whim of fantasy should be tried at least once in a lifetime.

Los “Mountain Wines” (vinos de montaña) vivieron su esplendor a mediados del siglo XVIII cuando los comerciantes ingleses, bien desenvueltos en el marco de Jerez, acuñaron el mote y dieron popularidad al vino naturalmente dulce que no encontraban en tierras jerezanas. Condenado al ostracismo de las modas que le precedieron, Telmo reivindica aquí la pureza de vinos dulces finos, depurados y sabrosos que dan más protagonismo a la uva y al monte antes que a la bodega o bodeguero.

Vista: Amarillo dorado de baja intensidad, muy seductor. Con cierta untuosidad en la copa.

Nariz: Fino, enormemente perfumado.

Atrayente. Recuerdos a melocotón, flor de jazmín. Fruta en estado puro.

Boca: Elegante, de vinosidad comedida, sin pesadez. Muy compleja y llena de sabores muy frutales. Aun con recorrido y evolución en botella. Magnifica acidez final que refresca y deja la boca limpia. Un placer.

Comentario: Nacido en 1998, Molino Real se ha convertido en uno de los vinos dulces más emblemáticos del país, sobre todo por tratarse de un estilo de vino recuperado en un momento donde vitivinícolamente hablando, se destaca la singularidad del producto tanto por la variedad como por el origen. La peculiar técnica usada para crear este vino es el asoleamiento que consiste en usar uva madura (no sobremadura), que pasa a ser asoleada (bajo el sol) un tiempo en las paseras (lugar donde se ponen a desecar las uvas para que pierdan agua). Se consigue así una mayor concentración de azúcar, pero también una mayor concentración del resto de elementos debido a la deshidratación. El resultado es un magnífico vino naturalmente dulce que nos hace vibrar desde el primer sorbo, con un perfume frutal que enamora y dejando una huella de identidad indeleble en la memoria que nos hace esbozar una sonrisa infinita al beberlo.

In the exceptionally and constantly mild Malaga region of Axarquia, sitting on limestone and slate with vineyards scattered over its slopes and hillsides, Telmo Rodriguez found himself surrounded and captivated by the magic created by nature and man which represent a precious part of the wine mosiac and therefore Mediterranean culture. “Mountain Wines” were at the height of their glory in the mid-eighteenth century when English merchants, heavily involved in the Sherry trade, coined the term and popularized this naturally sweet wine, not found in Jerez. Doomed to the ostracism of earlier fashions, Telmo seeks the purity of fine, clean, delicious sweet wines, in which the grape and the mountains play a larger role than that of the winery or winemaker.

Appearance: Golden yellow of low intensity, very seductive with a certain unctuosity in the glass.

Nose: Fine, very fragrant. Appealing.

Aromas of peach and jasmine flower.

Fruit in its purest form.

Palate: Elegant, measured vinosity without heaviness. Very complex and full of very fruity flavours. Even after the time spent ageing in bottle. Magnificent final acidity which refreshes and cleanses the palate. A delight.

Comment: Created in 1998, Molino Real has become one of Spain’s most iconic sweet wines, particularly because it is a style of wine revived at a time when, as far as the wine world is concerned, it is the grape variety and origin which make a product unique. The peculiar technique used to produce this wine is known as asoleamiento (sun drying) which consists of taking ripe grapes (not overripe), which are then asoleadas (dried in the sun) for a while in paseras (place where the grapes are put out to dry and lose water). This process produces a higher concentration of sugar and other elements due to dehydration. The result is a wonderful, naturally sweet wine which thrills the palate from the very first sip. Its bewitching, fruity fragrance leaves a lasting impression on our memories and its taste brings a permanent smile to our lips.

La bodega Rioja Alta es un pedazo de historia viva de la Rioja y a la par historia de los vinos españoles habidos y por haber.

No exageramos. Es difícil encontrar en nuestra memoria sustituto a sus vinos en cuanto a clásicos de verdad se refiere. Es una evidencia el estilo de antaño que rezuman sus vinos pero que nos quede muy claro a todos, ese es el punto de partida del que han “bebido” durante décadas otras muchas bodegas del país.

Vista: Color rojo teja de capa media, con bordes marrones, evidentes en los vinos de su edad y de estilo clásico riojano.

Nariz: Abierto y con una intensidad notable para su edad. Es fino y con presencia de fruta roja marchita, con notables aromas especiados y maderas avainilladas. Recuerdos de cuero muy evidentes. Notas de canela en rama.

Boca: Elegante, sin estridencias. Con acidez desde el inicio y fiel al estilo clásico de los vinos de Rioja viejos. Presencia de sabores frutales evolucionados, cacao y hojas de te negro. Final largo y tranquilo. Con personalidad.

Comentario: Como en el número anterior hablamos de su hermano 904, este 890, el mayor de la bodega, toma su nombre del año de la fundación de la empresa, de la que el primer digito del año se cae de la etiqueta.

El 890, con más de seis años de crianza en barrica americana y apenas 25.000 botellas producidas, es un joven anciano clásico que sale al mercado con casi quince años y no es tarea fácil perseverar en la gesta en estos tiempos que corren donde lo más “in” es ser un vino masticable con apenas meses de vida. No se engañen, estos vinos tradicionales nos cuentan la historia en cada sorbo y han de permanecer como son para siempre, para poder tener cerca un sabio a quien escuchar lo que nos hemos perdido. Y seguramente son nuestros humildes orígenes a los que evoca este vino. A un tiempo donde el reloj se detiene, donde la inmediatez del momento se saborea y se congela para dar paso a experiencias reposadas y enriquecedoras.

Asómense al pasado sin bajarse del presente y vislumbren un futuro más esperanzador con cada botella de este fiel 890 Gran Reserva.

As well as being a piece of living history in Rioja, La Rioja Alta bodega is also part of the history of Spanish wines past and yet to come. This is no exaggeration. It is difficult, in living memory, to think of a substitute for its wines in terms of true classics. Their wines very obviously exude the “old style” but, let’s be clear, this is the starting point from which many other Spanish wineries have “drunk” for decades.

Appearance: Medium intensity brick red hue with brown edges, evident in classic Rioja style wines of similar age.

Nose: Open and showing remarkable intensity for its age. It is fine with some sun dried red fruit, evident spicy aromas and vanilla-ed oak. Very salient leather aromas and notes of cinnamon sticks.

Palate: Elegant, harmonious. Shows acidity from the outset, faithful to the classic style of old Rioja wines. Evolved fruit flavours, cocoa and black tea leaves. Long, pleasant finish. Shows character.

Comment: Like its brother 904, which we covered in the previous issue, the 890, the winery’s oldest wine, was named after the year the company was founded. The first digit of the year has been dropped on the label. The 890, with over six years ageing in American oak barrels and only 25,000 bottles produced, is a young, old classic.

Released on the market with nearly 15 years of age, this is a difficult course to maintain when what is considered “in” these days are chewy wines with just a few months of age. Make no mistake, these traditional wines tell a story with every sip, and they must stay like this forever so that we always have a sage at hand to tell us what we have lost. It is no doubt our humble beginnings that this wine evokes, a time when the clock stops, where the immediacy of the moment is savoured and frozen to make way for relaxing, enriching experiences. Peak into the past while still in the present and catch a glimpse of a brighter future with each bottle of this faithful 890 Gran Reserva.

Es un placer para nosotros presentarles uno de los icónicos vinos blancos franceses mundialmente conocido y que durante la primera mitad del siglo XX fue descrito por el famoso “príncipe de los gourmets”, el francés Maurice Edmond Sailland, más conocido como Curnonsky, como uno de los cinco vinos blancos únicos e inimitables del país.

Es un monovarietal de Chenin Blanc nacido en un pequeño pago del Loire hace ya más de 800 años. Y es que mucho ha llovido desde que los monjes cistercienses empezaran su gran labor vitivinícola en el monasterio de Vieux Serrant, irrumpida a principios de los años 80 por el banquero Nicolas Joly que decidió “colgar los hábitos” de una vida al límite para retirarse a un lugar reposado y saludable en Savennières. Aquí Joly puso en marcha una pequeña revolución revisionista sobre los métodos modernos de la agricultura actual y encomendándose a la biodinámica más radical, extendió mediante su evangelio las prácticas que hoy en día miles de seguidores han continuado a lo largo de diferentes viñedos del mundo.

Vista: Color amarillo dorado.

Nariz: Aunque no ha sido decantado, se muestra muy fragante. Notas de mostaza, manzana amarilla. Ciertamente compleja. Sorprende por su seductor frescor aromático.

Boca: Sabroso, redondo y muy agradable. Sabores anisados, fruta amarilla, miel de flor y una bonita acidez final.

Comentario: Ejemplo claro de vino de raza. No todos los vinos pueden decir que cuentan con una Denominación de Origen propia y esto de per se, nos puede dar meridianamente idea ante que vino estamos. ¿Terruño excelente?, ¿biodinámica bien trabajada?, ¿buen hacer enológico? Quizás lo más sensato es pensar que es una suma de todo y el resultado es un blanco delicioso, en un momento muy accesible que aún nos dará mayores alegrías si se tiene la suficiente paciencia para ver su evolución en botella. No se lo tomen a la ligera, suelen sentar cátedra ciertos vinos pero no se asusten por la grandilocuencia de su historia. A veces, quitar hierro al asunto, nos hace ver las cosas más accesibles. Y de eso se trata. ¿Por qué no?

It is a pleasure to introduce one of the world famous French iconic white wines, described in the first half of the 20th century by the famous “Prince of gourmets”, Frenchman Maurice Edmond Sailland (better known as Curnonsky), as being one of France’s five most unique and inimitable white wines. It´s a Chenin Blanc single varietal wine which was born in a small Loire vineyard over 800 years ago. Much has happened since the Cistercian monks first embarked on their great winemaking labour in the Vieux Serrant monastery, which banker, Nicolas Joly, burst into in the early 80’s. Joly had decided to “give up the cloth” of a life at the limit to retire to a haven of peace and clean-living in Savennières. Here he started a mini revisionist revolution against modern growing methods, dedicated himself to radical biodynamic growing and, through his gospel, spread practices which thousands of followers continue in vineyards around the world today.

Appearance: Golden yellow colour.

Nose: Although it has not been decanted, it is very fragrant. Notes of mustard and yellow apple. Definitely complex.

Surprising seductive aromatic freshness.

Palate: Full of flavour, smooth and very pleasant. Aniseed flavours, yellow fruit, flower honey and a nice final.

Comment: Evident example of a thoroughbred wine Not all wines can boast their own denomination of origin and this in itself makes it abundantly clear what kind of wine we have before us. Excellent terroir? Well worked Biodynamics?

Winemaking skill? It would probably make sense to think of the wine as a sum of all these factors, the result of which is a delicious white, currently very accessible, but which will bring us even greater pleasure if we have the patience to allow it further bottle ageing. It is not to be taken lightly, some wines do tend to pontificate, but on the other hand don’t be intimidated by the grandeur of its history.

Sometimes, not making a big deal about something, makes it seem more approachable. And this is certainly the case here.

Estados Unidos United States Marimar State es una pequeña bodega familiar californiana enclavada en Sonoma que fue fundada oficialmente en 1986 bajo las directrices de Marimar Torres, hija de la bodega catalana Miguel Torres. Marimar es una de esas personas que transmiten positivismo constantemente y con esas ganas de comerse el mundo desembarcó en 1975 en California, convirtiéndose en la mejor prescriptora de los vinos de su familia en tierras americanas. Debajo del brazo se llevó también lo mejor de la gastronomía nacional, entendiendo que aunar cocina y vino debían ir intrínsecamente ligados y ofrecer así un legado que ensalza, en todo momento, las bonanzas de la dieta mediterránea, lo que la han llevado a ser actualmente una de las personas residentes en Norte América más conocida de la gastronomía española.

Vista: Amarillo pajizo ligeramente dorado.

Nariz: Opulento en aroma. Fruta amarilla madura y fruta de hueso muy evidente como el melocotón. Recuerdos de vainillas dulces y notas ciertamente de pastelería.

Boca: Densa, con volumen. Sabores muy dulzones. Presencia de maderas nuevas. Con buena estructura y acidez suficiente que lo hacen más liviano.

Comentario: Bienvenidos al mundo de los chardonnays “comestibles”. Nacido en el viñedo orgánico Don Miguel, llamado así en honor del que fue el patriarca de la familia Torres, se situa a tan solo 15 km del Oceano Pacifico y es un estilo de vino poco común en Europa pero muy apreciado en el continente americano. Es un blanco de “cuchillo y tenedor”, en todos los aspectos pues inevitablemente deberán acompañarlo con comida si desean experimentar su capacidad gustativa total. Un blanco, sin embargo, bien conducido, con acabados sedosos que apaciguan la aun muy presente fuerza de la barrica que lo crió. Deberá contenerse aun unos años más en botella si queremos disfrutar de una fiera más domada.

Marimar State is a small family winery in the heart of Sonoma, California. It was officially founded in 1986 under the instructions of Marimar Torres, the daughter of Miguel A. Torres from the famous Catalan bodega. Marimar is one of those people who constantly shows a “can do” attitude and, in 1975, keen to conquer the world, she came to California and became the best ambassador for her family’s wines on U.S. soil. She also brought with her the best of Spanish cuisine, aware of the fact that food and wine should be intrinsically linked, providing a heritage that always celebrates the bounty of the Mediterranean diet. This has turned her into one of North America’s best known experts on Spanish cuisine.

Appearance: Light golden straw yellow.

Nose: Opulent aromas. Ripe yellow fruit and very evident stone fruit such as peaches. Aromas of sweet vanillas and pastries.

Palate: Dense, with body. Very sweet flavours and new oak. Good structure and enough acidity, making it lighter.

Comment: Welcome to the world of “edible” Chardonnays. Born in the Don Miguel organic vineyard, named in honour of the man who was the patriarch of the Torres family, it is located just 15 kms from the Pacific Ocean. This style of wine is rare in Europe but much appreciated in North America. It is a “knife and fork” white wine in every way and should really be enjoyed with food if you want to appreciate the full taste experience it offers.

However, this white is well made with a silky finish that softens the still strong influence of the barrel in which it aged. If you prefer to enjoy this beast a little more tamed, it should be left to age in bottle for a few more years.

Bodega nacida en 1997 bajo la supervisión de la bicentenaria bodega Castell del Remei y que se localiza en la zona más meridional de la D.O. Costers del Segre (Lleida), concretamente en la subzona Les Garrigues, envuelta por lo tanto, por un paisaje marcadamente mediterráneo seco, lleno de almendros y olivos donde se suceden las construcciones de piedra seca. Cuentan con 32 hectáreas repartidas en 12 parcelas donde practican métodos agroecológicos para favorecer los procesos naturales y las interacciones biológicas con el fin de optimizar y conservar los recursos agrícolas de la tierra, garantizando así la práctica de una agricultura sostenible.

Vista: Rojo cereza de capa alta. Negruzco.

Presencia de lágrima muy evidente.

Nariz: Algo sobrio al principio, mejora si es decantado. Se abre poco a poco dando inicialmente notas de tierra húmeda, cueros nuevos y tabaco rubio. Presencia notable de fruta negra confitada, cacao y caramelo.

Complejo. Salvaje.

Boca: Robusto pero bien integrado.

Sabrosos recuerdos de fruta negra muy madura. Tanino presente pero nada rugoso.

Buena acidez final dejando un recuerdo largo y más fresco de lo esperado.

Comentario: Estrats es el vino mas mimado de la bodega y su solemne botella ya da a entender ante que “animal” vamos a toparnos al descorcharla. Nace de una cuidada selección de Cabernet Sauvignon (en su mayoría), Tempranillo y Garnacha proveniente de viñas de mediana edad, situadas a más de 700 metros de altura, aportando cierto frescor al viñedo y resguardando el fruto del inevitable calor extremo alcanzado durante el día. El vino ha sido criado durante 18 meses en barrica francesa nueva y goza de una musculatura superlativa. Aun así, este 2006, plagado de matices, es más manso que otras añadas y se agradece cierto grado más comedido para disfrutarlo mucho más sin necesidad de usar “cuchillo”. Todo este tiempo en botella le ha sentado fenomenal y aun así le auguramos unos años más de mejoría y disfrute. Buen ejemplo de contundencia bien definida.

The bodega was founded in 1997 under the supervision of the bicentennial Castell del Remei winery. It is located in the southern most part of the Costers del Segre DO in Lleida, in the sub-area of the Les Garrigues. The bodega is therefore surrounded by a markedly dry Mediterranean landscape, populated with almond and olive trees and dry stone constructions. The bodega boasts 32 hectares spread over 12 plots. Agro-ecological methods are used to encourage natural processes and biological interactions in order to optimize and conserve the land’s agricultural resources, thereby ensuring the practice of sustainable agriculture.

Appearance: Very intense cherry red, blackish with clearly visible tears.

Nose: Quite discreet at first, improves if decanted. Gradually opens up, initially offering up notes of wet earth, new leather and blond tobacco. Noticeable aromas of candied black fruit, cocoa and caramel.

Complex and wild.

Palate: Robust but well integrated.

Delicious aromas of very ripe black fruit.

Some tannin but nothing too rough. Good final acidity with a long aftertaste and fresher than expected.

Comment: Estrats is the bodega’s most cosseted wine. Its formal bottle already hints at the type of “animal” which will be unleashed when we uncork it. It is produced from a careful selection of Cabernet Sauvignon (the majority), Tempranillo and Garnacha from middle aged vines, growing at over 700 metres altitude, providing the vineyards with a degree of freshness and protecting the fruit from the extreme daytime heat. The wine has been aged in new French oak for 18 months and possesses superlative build.

Nevertheless, this 2006, riddled with nuances, is more docile than other vintages and the more moderate degree is appreciated to enable us to enjoy it much more, without the need of a “knife”. The time spent in bottle has been hugely beneficial.

Even so, we wish it a few more years of improvement and enjoyment. This is a fine example of a well defined power.

Todos disfrutan del Banc Sabadell Vijazz Penedès The Banco Sabadell Vijazz Penedès Festival - enjoyed by all    Más de 45.000 personas vivieron el Banc Sabadell Vijazz Penedès el primer fin de semana del mes de Julio, gozando intensamente de la cultura del vino y el mejor jazz, en la que ha sido la mejor edición, tanto en número de visitantes como en la calidad de los artistas y bodegas.

TH  Over 45,000 people flocked to the Banco Sabadell Vijazz Penedès festival in the first weekend of July to experience wine culture and enjoy great Jazz music. It was the most successful edition so far in terms of visitor numbers and the quality of artists and wineries in attendance.

En un extraordinario ambiente de vinos, música y cultura, Vilafranca y el Penedès han vuelto a ser el centro de atención cultural catalana gracias a la séptima edición del Banc Sabadell Vijazz Penedès. La Feria de vinos de la Rambla Nostra Senyora estaba llena de visitantes paseando con una copa de vino en la mano y gozando de las 41 bodegas del Penedès que mostraron sus mejores vinos y cavas.

Se sirvieron más de 64.000 degustaciones, a las más de 45.000 personas que visitaron la feria procedentes de toda Catalunya, de España y, este año de manera significativa, de extranjeros de la comunidad europea e internacionales. Las sesiones de cata y maridaje, organizadas en tres salas diferentes, han acogido 1.525 personas, que han gozado de catas y maridajes de altísimo nivel.

The extraordinary blend of wine, music and culture at the seventh edition of the Banco Sabadell Vijazz Penedès, has returned Vilafranca and the Penedès region to the Catalan cultural spotlight. The wine fair lined up along the Rambla Nostra Senyora was packed with visitors strolling around, wine glass in hand, and appreciating the best wines and cavas from the 41 Penedès wineries in attendance. 64,000 tastings were provided to over 45,000 people visiting the wine fair from all over Catalonia, Spain and, significantly this year, from E.U. countries and even further afield. The tasting and pairing sessions which took place in three different venues, drew 1,525 people to wine tastings and food pairings of the very highest quality.

There were over 40 organized winery tours and cultural visits which proved to be extremely popular, attracting nearly 1,000 participants,

guido un gran éxito, con la participación de casi 1.000 personas, haciendo de las visitas el complemento perfecto de los turistas durante las horas en qué la feria está cerrada.

En cuanto al festival de jazz, el éxito volvió a ser total.

Los escenarios se llenaron de nuevo para gozar del programa de actuaciones de esta edición, con una ocupación total los tres días de conciertos, y que hacen del Banc Sabadell Vijazz Penedès el segundo festival más importante de Catalunya en número de asistentes y uno de los más importantes de todo es estado.

Chick Corea con su grupo The Vigil llenó hasta el último rincón el gran escenario de Jaume I, con un maravilloso concierto hecho por el artista más importante y mediático que ha participado hasta ahora en el Banc Sabadell Vijazz Penedès. Destacar también la fuerza y autenticidad del grupo Medeski, Martin & Wood, que acercaron el jazz a un público más joven. La voz fue la protagonista de dos grandes conciertos, el de la elegante Eliane Elias y el de John Pizzarelli Quartet.

Phronesis dio el toque europeo al festival, que también contó con las magníficas actuaciones de la Barcelona Big Blues Band, el potente directo de Astrio o la improvisación de Roger Blàvia.

These visits took place at times when the Wine Fair itself was closed providing tourists with a perfect alternative.

The jazz festival was once again a resounding success. The performance areas were again packed over the three days of concerts with audiences enjoying the full event programme, making the Banco Sabadell Vijazz Penedès the second most important festival in Catalonia in terms of number of visitors and one of the most important in the country.

Chick Corea and his group, The Vigil, the biggest and most well-known artist to have performed at the Banco Sabadell Vijazz Penedès to date, gave a fantastic performance to a packed Jaume I plaza. The energy and authenticity of the Medeski, Martin & Wood group, who brought jazz to a younger audience, was also outstanding. The voice was the protagonist of two of the major concerts, the voices of the elegant Eliane Elias and the John Pizzarelli Quartet.

Phronesis gave the festival a European touch, and audiences were also able to enjoy a superb performance from the Barcelona Big Blues Band, the great stage presence of Astrio and the improvisation of Roger Blàvia.

Nos vamos hasta Sanlúcar de Barrameda a conocer la historia de otra de las bodegas centenarias españolas que sigue gestionada por los herederos de familia fundadora. Se trata de Barbadillo, mirando al mar y al Coto Doñana. A orillas de ese océano Atlántico que tanto tuvo que ver con su fundación. Barbadillo, el vino del mar que vino de ultramar.

We are headed to Sanlúcar de Barrameda to explore the history of another centuries-old Spanish bodega which is still run by the descendents of the original founding family. We are talking about Barbadillo, overlooking the sea and the Coto Doñana, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean which played such an important role in the story of its creation. Barbadillo, wine of the sea that came from overseas.

Los antecedentes de los Barbadillo tuvieron mucho que ver con los Siete Infantes de Salas, que la leyenda y el romancero bautizaron como de Lara.

Siglo X, Condado de Castilla. Doña Lambra, señora de Barbadillo y natural de Briviesca era una noble dama castellana, parienta del famoso Fernán González, conde de Castilla, a la que unen en matrimonio con otro noble llamado Rui Velázquez, tío de siete criaturas guerreras, los literarios Infantes. En la boda hubo un altercado entre los parientes de ambas familias que acabó en una muerte violenta. La venganza de esta muerte dio origen a la cruel leyenda de Los Siete Infantes de Lara, y de alguna manera, poca, (sólo son los remotos antecesores de los Barbadillo) al origen, muchos siglos después, de las bodegas sanluqueñas.

The history of the Barbadillo family is closely linked to the Seven Infantes de Salas, better known as the Seven Infantes de Lara, the name given them in ballads and legend.

10th Century, Castile Country. Doña Lambra, Lady of Barbadillo, born in Briviesca, was a Castilian noblewoman related to the famous Fernán González, Count of Castile. She was betrothed to another nobleman by the name of Rui Velázquez, the uncle to the seven bellicose characters, the “Infantes” of the story. At Doña Lambra’s wedding, an altercation between members of both families ended in a violent death. Revenge for the death gave rise to the cruel legend of the “Seven Infantes de Lara”, and in a small way, (they are only distant ancestors of the Barbadillos) was at the origin, many centuries later, of the bodegas in Sanlúcar.

Because of the fatal incident at Doña Lambra’s wedding, which sparked the legend and death of the Seven Infantes, the heirs and supporters of the Lady of Barbadillo moved to the beautiful town of Covarrubias, under the protection of their relatives, the Counts of Castile. So we have officially found history’s first users of the Barbadillo surname, all settled in Covarrubias, in the province of Burgos.

Centuries go by and a certain Tomàs Barbadillo, an ordained priest (from Covarrubias of course), decided to emmigrate to Mexico in the late 18th century, presumably on an evangelizing mission. He was able to amass a sizeable clerical fortune in the country. His nephews came over from Castile to manage these important assets. The Barbadillo priest died in the early 19th century,

Casi todo el resto de los sobrinos de Don Tomás, el rico sacerdote, que también fueron a México a hacerse cargo de la herencia y negocios, cuando volvieron, ya por cuestiones de independencia del país, lo hicieron la burgalesa y castellana tierra de origen, Covarrubias.

making his nephews his heirs. The first two nephews who had come to help him manage his wealth, received a large share of this sizeable inheritance. Their names were Benigno Barbadillo and Manuel López Barbadillo and they were first cousins. Needless to say, “father” Barbadillo’s had strong businesses in Mexico; sales and exports of cocoa and beans, import of wines, pharmacies and real estate, etc, but presumably it was wine which brought the two rich cousins to the Cádiz town of Sanlúcar de Barrameda, as there seems to have been little else to have drawn them there. The two cousins arrived in the town in 1821. Due to Mexican Independence, nearly all Don Tomàs’ remaining nephews who had also gone to Mexico to manage the wealthy priest’s estate and businesses, returned to Spain and they settled in the Burgos and Castile homeland of Covarrubias.

de vinos dulces, vinos de color, vinos de viso, pajaretes, aguardientes... Las primeras menciones a la manzanilla en la firma Barbadillo datan del 1827 reflejadas de tal manera en un envío nada menos que a Filadelfia. Al parecer el primero que así nombró al vino blanco sanluqueño, muy pocos años antes, fue el gran Esteban Boutelou, sabio botánico nacido en Aranjuez, que por encargo de Godoy llegó a Sanlúcar a montar un jardín botánico de aclimatación. Estudió profundamente las prácticas enológicas de Sanlúcar de Barrameda y con todo ello construyó un delicioso manual que es un verdadero libro de cabecera para todos los estudiosos del tema. La primera vez que vio la luz creo que fue, precisamente, por iniciativa de Bodegas Barbadillo, que lo editó con excelente y sensible criterio.

Al hilo de esta nomenclatura, se constata que el nombre procede del parecido que tiene el aroma del vino blanco sanluqueño con la flor de la planta de la camomilla. Nada que ver con las aceitunas, ni con las manzanas pequeñas, ni con un pueblo de Huelva llamado manzanilla (Huelva durante años perteneció al Ducado de Medina Sidonia, cuya capital era Sanlúcar)

by Godoy to create a botanical garden in Sanlúcar. He studied the Sanlúcar de Barrameda winemaking practices in depth and put together a delightful handbook which is an excellent reference book for all those interested in the subject. In fact, I believe that it was originally published upon the initiative of Bodegas Barbadillo, which edited it to very high standards.

Looking at the origin of the manzanilla name, it appears that it comes from the resemblance of the white wine’s aroma to the flower of the chamomile plant (manzanilla in Spanish). Nothing to do with olives, small apples, or with the village of Huelva known as Manzanilla (for years Huelva belonged to the Duchy of Medina Sidonia, the capital of which was Sanlúcar). Talking of manzanilla olives, I was told a funny story about a manzanilla exporter who sent a keg of manzanilla olives in brine to some English customers as a Christmas gift. Shortly after, his English importer called him, very concerned, to inform him that the wine had really gone off - it was cloudy and very salty, and what’s more it contained many large, – 73

Esta anécdota viene a reflejar, al margen de su lado humorístico, que en Inglaterra se debía conocer más la manzanilla sanluqueña que la variedad de aceitunas, por cierto, tan sevillanas, como la manzanilla. ¿Qué fue antes el huevo o la gallina, la manzanilla aceituna o la manzanilla vino? Sin duda, la aceituna.

Don Benigno debió ser personaje de gran valía, sin duda protagonista principal en esta historia. Se casó ya cuarentón con una montañesa, de familia santanderina y tuvo cinco hijos. Sólo vivieron dos y uno de ellos, Manuel, fue el continuador de la saga bodeguera que iba creciendo y

Don Benigno’s first stone

Not long after their arrival, Don Benigno and his cousin bought their first bodega from another trader and producer in Sanlúcar, and this purchase was to be the foundation stone of the current large complex of bodegas belonging to the Barbadillo family and company which occupy hundreds and hundreds of hectares in the old quarter of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Don Benigno would appear to have been an admirable character and is no doubt the main protagonist in this story. He married in his forties to a lady from a Santander family and had five children.

Only two survived and one of them, Manuel, took over the bodega’s business which was growing fast. Manuel, in turn, married a lady of power and influence from Sanlúcar and the couple also had five children, all boys. One of these, Antonio, created the company under the name, “Antonio Barbadillo S.A.” (today it is simply known as “Bodegas Barbadillo”). They continued buying up numerous “cascos” (this is how they referred to the large ageing cellars of great height and beauty, also known as “cathedrals of wine”) and the business took off dramatically.

Benigno from Mexico, the family wine business had been bottling a manzanilla now officially known as such, under the “Divina Pastora” brand name. The five children of Don Antonio and Doña Caridad Rodriguez Terán, the city’s first lady and heiress to a large fortune, in turn had many children who together built and ran this important Andalusian wine company. One of these, Manuel, writer and poet as well as the company winemaker, was the father of Toto (Antonio Pedro) one of the most energetic, admired and well-loved Barbadillos in the current story, who I had the honour of knowing. He was a historian with a great sense of humour and an expert on his subject. To Toto, undoubtedly, is due the invention of the famous “Castillo de San Diego” white wine, better known to all as “the white Barbadillo” which has become the best selling white wine in all of Spain, exceeding sales of the Bodega’s other wines, all manzanillas. At one point its sales were even bigger than those of all the finos and manzanillas marketed under the sherry name. This is a real bomb of a wine that burst on drinkers’ palates. It is made from the same grape variety used for manzanilla – 75

Se trata de un vino elaborado con la misma uva que se elabora la manzanilla pero con un proceso completamente distinto, sin crianza biológica bajo velo de flor.

El empeño, constancia e incluso testarudez, que todo hay que decirlo y esta vez para bien, de Toto, dio en el blanco.

Por su frescura, frutosidad y ligereza hace magnífica pareja con todos los habitantes del mar, desde los incomensurables langostinos de Sanlúcar de Barrameda famosos en el mundo entero a las exquisitas tortillitas de camarones, que tienen en esta ciudad gaditana sus mejores elaboradores. Al Castilla de San Diego actual, con sus originales, acertadas y atractivas presentaciones de botellas, que hacen clara referencias a crustáceos, moluscos y pescados, se le considera el vino del mar, y del mar llegaron los Barbadillo...

Cata a ciegas en Valladolid Blind tasting in Valladolid Aprovechando nuestro viaje para realizar el reportaje de Peter Sisseck a Ribera de Duero, nos hemos quedado en la ciudad castellana de Valladolid para realizar la 5ª cata a ciegas de nuestra revista. En esta ocasión, nos adentramos hacia el casco viejo de la ciudad vallisoletana, donde nos recibió Juan José Alejos, Presidente de la Asociación de sumilleres de Valladolid y Vice-presidente de la asociación de sumilleres de la comunidad de Castilla y León.

Era una mañana lluviosa y a nuestra llegada al restaurante La Abadía, ya estaba todo preparado para iniciar la cata.

El restaurante La Abadía es un restaurante especializado en comida tradicional y de mercado, con especial dedicación a los guisos, carnes, pescados, con detalles de originalidad. Se caracterizan por un ambiente familiar y una carta con productos y platos típicos de la zona.

Casi todos los asistentes ya estaban preparados. Mientras llegaban los últimos rezagados, nuestra fotógrafa empezó la sesión con cada uno de ellos, al tiempo que se ultimaban los detalles de la cata. Como de costumbre, explicaciones diversas para el correcto desarrollo del acto y nos ponemos manos a la obra. Desde el inicio, alguno de los sumilleres de la asociación toma la iniciativa a la hora de comentar los vinos allí presentes. Pero dejémonos de prolegómenos y explicaciones y vamos a las conclusiones de la cata que, al fin y al cabo, es lo que interesa conocer, así como las propuestas de maridaje.

Taking advantage of our trip to Ribera de Duero to write the article on Peter Sisseck, we stayed in the Castilian city of Valladolid to conduct the magazine’s 5th blind tasting. This time, we went to the old part of the city of Valladolid, where we were met by Juan Jose Alejos, President of the Association of Sommeliers of Valladolid and Vice-President of the Association of Sommeliers of Castilla y León. It was a rainy morning and when we arrived at the “La Abadía” restaurant everything was set and ready for the tasting.

The La Abadía Restaurant specializes in traditional food and fresh produce from the local market, serving stews, meats, fish, etc with an original touch. It is characterized by a family atmosphere and a menu with typical products and local dishes.

Almost all participants were ready for the tasting. As the last stragglers arrived, our photographer started the session with each of them, while we completed the final preparations for the tasting. The usual explanations were given to ensure the tasting went smoothly and we then got down to the task at hand. From the start, one of the sommeliers of the association took the lead when it came to commenting on each of the wines. But enough of the build up and explanations and let us get straight to the conclusions of the tasting which, after all, are what we all want to know, along with the food pairing suggestions.
