Año nuevo, vida nueva. Nos globalizamos New year, new life. So we’re going global!

Hay un dicho en España que dice “Año nuevo, vida nueva”. Nosotros no nos lo vamos aplicar exactamente así, pero con el cambio de año hemos creído conveniente, y dada la situación de globalización que está presente en todos los sectores, seguir esa línea. El mundo del vino abarca todo el planeta y queremos compartir con ustedes esas vivencias y sensaciones que tenemos cada vez que catamos un vino, sea europeo o americano, sudafricano o australiano. Todos son vinos y los trataremos a todos por igual y por ello vamos a dejar de clasificar algunos vinos como extranjeros, y sólo vamos a categorizarlos en función del tipo de vino que es. Sí que mantenemos esa pequeña clasificación de vinos denominados clásicos y la de los desconocidos, pero siguiendo el mismo criterio de globalización.

En este número rendimos un pequeño homenaje en forma de reportaje a una bodega que, en el año que dejamos, ha cumplido su 50 aniversario. Se trata de Jean Leon, que como nos describen desde la misma bodega y nos explica nuestro colaborador Ramón Francás es “la culminación de la vida de un hombre”.

Además, contamos con los reportajes habituales y, en este ejemplar, que aparece a caballo entre las Navidades y Fin de Año, hemos ampliado el número de notas de cata de vinos, más allá de la veintena, para que si lo desean, se den un pequeño homenaje durante las fiestas o tengan un detallazo con alguien de su entorno.

Aprovechamos para desearles unas felices fiestas de Navidad y un 2014 lleno de alegrías, tanto en lo personal como en lo laboral.

There’s a saying in Spain: "New year, new life." We are not going to take this literally, but we thought it appropriate, given the New Year and the prevalence of globalization in all sectors, that we do something along these lines. The world of wine spans the planet and we wish to share our experiences and emotions each time we taste a fine wine, whether it be European or American, South African or Australian. Wine is wine, and each wine will be treated alike. We are therefore no longer going to classify non-Spanish wines as "foreign", categorizing them instead according to their type. We will retain the minor classification of "classic" versus "unknown" wines, but we will respect the globalization criterion.

In this issue we pay tribute, in the form of an article, to a “bodega” which celebrated its 50th Anniversary in the year now drawing to a close. We are referring to Jean Leon, described by the bodega itself as "the culmination of the life of one man".

Our contributor, Ramón Francás, expands on this in his fascinating article.

We are of course including all our regular features in this issue due out between Christmas and the New Year, but we have increased the number of wine tasting notes from the usual twenty or so. That way you can spoil yourself over the festive season or give someone you know a special treat.

Bodega Jean Leon Visionarios medio siglo después Still visionary half a century later RAMON FRANCÀS Muchos vinos tienen algo que contar, pero muy pocos tienen detrás una historia como la de un Jean Leon, afirman desde esta célebre bodega del corazón del Penedès. Desde Jean Leon, la bodega del Penedès fundada por un santanderino que llegó a ser toda una celebridad en Hollywood con su restaurante en Beberly Hills, recuerdan a Ceferino Carrión (Jean Leon) como un personaje poseedor de un instinto único para adelantarse a sus tiempos. También destacan “sus dotes románticas de visionario”. Ese espíritu permanece “inquebrantable” en una bodega que ostenta la máxima distinción a la que puede aspirar un vino catalán, la del Vi de Finca. Ahora, aprovechando su 50 aniversario, han rediseñado a través de la agencia catalana Pavlov la imagen de buena parte de sus vinos para transmitir con mayor fuerza la apasionante historia de su fundador. La directora general de Jean Leon, Mireia Torres, destaca que la obtención de la calificación Vi de Finca para sus gamas altas es “un reconocimiento al esfuerzo que se ha hecho desde 1963 para obtener vinos de alta calidad”.

Many wines have a story to tell but very few have a story like theirs, according to Jean Leon, the famous bodega in the heart of Penedès, Spain. Its founder, Jean Leon, a native of Santander, opened a restaurant in Beverly Hills and became a Hollywood celebrity. At the company they remember “Ceferino Carrión” (Jean Leon’s real name) as a man with a unique knack of being ahead of his time. They also speak of “Jean Leon’s gift as a visionary.” His spirit remains “unshakeable” at the bodega which now boasts the highest distinction to which Catalan wines can aspire, that of Vi de Finca. Today, to mark the bodega’s 50th anniversary and working with Catalan agency, Pavlov, the company has reworked the image of a good number of its wines in order to more strongly convey the fascinating story of its founder. Jean Leon’s general manager, Mireia Torres, stresses that obtaining the Vi de Finca qualification for their high-end ranges is “recognition of the work carried out since 1963 to produce high quality wines”.

Sus principales mercados son Estados Unidos, Japón, la China, Suiza, Alemania y Suecia. En la China ya venden más botellas de su Gran Reserva que en España. En los últimos años Mireia Torres ha reforzado, además, la penetración en

mercados como el canadiense, el noruego o el finlandés. Tras integrar Jean Leon al equipo comercial del grupo Torres desde el mes de febrero de 2013, tienen esperanzas de continuar creciendo pese a la crisis tras alcanzar sus exportaciones el 50% de la producción. La integración en la fuerza comercial de Torres no podía ser más exitosa. Mireia Torres asegura que “valoramos mucho el trabajo que desarrolla el equipo comercial”.

Pese a la buena marcha de las exportaciones, no quieren abandonar el mercado nacional. Mireia Torres revela que la dirección de Jean Leon le ha permitido conocer otros campos del negocio del vino. Su formación técnica como enóloga la había llevado a creer que “solo con ser bueno un vino ya se vende solo”. Ahora ha podido comprobar que su percepción era errónea.

Coincidiendo también con su 50 aniversario, Jean Leon ha decidido ampliar el número de hectáreas de la variedad estrella de esta finca de 150 hectáreas, la cabernet sauvignon. Los técnicos de esta bodega de Torrelavit, según ha confirmado la directora general de la bodega, han plantado tres hectáreas más. Actualmente Jean Leon, que fue pionera en España en la plantación de

They already sell more bottles of their Gran Reserva in China than they do in Spain. In recent years Mireia Torres has increased penetration in markets such as Canada, Norway and Finland. 2013, and with exports now 50% of production, they hope to continue to grow despite the economic crisis.

The incorporation into the Torres sales team could not have been more successful. Mireia Torres says that “we very much value the work of the sales team.”

Despite the good export performance, they have no intention of neglecting the Spanish market. Mireia Torres says that managing Jean Leon has allowed her to gain experience in other areas of the wine business. Her technical training as an oenologist had led her to think that “if the wine is good it will sell itself ”. She now realizes that this perception is mistaken.

Coinciding again with its 50th anniversary, Jean Leon has decided to increase the vineyard surface area of the 150 hectare estate’s star grape variety, the Cabernet Sauvignon. The company’s general manager confirmed that Torrelavit winery technical staff have planted three more hectares. Currently Jean Leon, who pioneered the planting of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay in Spain, has 61 hectares. Jean Leon’s oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard, La Scala, bearing the same name as Jean Leon’s Beverly Hills restaurant, was planted in 1963. The vines

reducida, concentrada y de alta calidad”. La cabernet sauvignon también se encuentra plantada en la viña Le Havre, de 15 hectáreas.

Jean Leon, propiedad del grupo Torres desde 1994, fue la primera bodega en España en plantar chardonnay, en realizar una fermentación en barrica de vino blanco (1973) y en elaborar una botella de cabernet sauvignon (1969). Hoy, aseguran que los de Jean Leon son “vinos únicos, singulares y nacidos en un pago excepcional”, así como que su producción limitada “se mantiene fiel al estilo de su creador, Jean Leon”.

Gracias a los sabios consejos de Jaume Rovira, que fue el primer enólogo de Jean Leon, “nuestros vinos continúan fieles a su estilo y a los ideales de calidad de su creador, preservándose fielmente su legado”, según la bodega. También se señala que su gama de vinos “es el reflejo de la vida de un hombre, de una época y de unos vinos con una historia y personalidad propias”. Jaume Rovira, toda una institución vitivinícola, asegura haber pasado “toda una vida” en Jean Leon.

Transcurrieron cuatro décadas desde que se incorporó hasta que se jubiló, en 2008. Asegura haber pasado

and the first to produce a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon (1969). Today, they state that Jean Leon’s wines are, “unique and inimitable, produced from an exceptional vineyard” and that their small production “remains true to the style of the creator, Jean Leon”. According to the winery, thanks to the expert advice of Jean Leon’s first winemaker, Jaume Rovira, “our wines remain true to the creator’s style and ideals of quality, faithfully preserving his legacy”. They also state that their wine range “is a reflection of the life of a man and an era, and is made up of wines with their own story and personality”. Jaume Rovira, an institution in the wine world, claims to have spent “a lifetime” at Jean Leon. When he retired in 2008 he had spent four decades with the company. In fact, he claims to have spent more time in the winery and its vineyards than in his own home. He says that “Jean Leon was the high point of my career and work which I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.” Rovira’s first crop, which only filled 22 barrels of 225L, was the 1969. Since then there have been a number of memorable vintages, including some real gems. Without referring to any notes, Jaume Rovira reels off the vintages of which he is the most proud: 1971, – 11

En este sentido apunta que “Jean Leon es la culminación máxima de mi vida laboral, un proyecto en el que he disfrutado muchísimo”. La primera cosecha de Rovira, que solo sirvió para llenar 22 barricas de 225 litros, fue la de 1969. Desde entonces se han sucedido un buen número de cosechas memorables, entre las que se encuentran verdaderas joyas. Jaume Rovira conserva en su memoria, sin consultar chuleta alguna, las añadas de las que se muestra más orgulloso: 1971, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000 y 2001. Al enólogo histórico de Jean León le gusta recordar tres añadas para tres tipos de consumidores distintos: la de 1981, para los que gustan de los tintos suaves; la de 1982 para los ilustrados, ya que consiguió muy buena crítica; y la de 1983, para los entendidos en vino, ya que para Rovira esta añada fue netamente mejor que la del 82. Aún recuerda como si fuera ayer las primeras añadas de la bodega, que vendieron por encima de las 400 pesetas la botella.

Quien continua la labor de Jaume Rovira, junto a Mireia Torres, desde hace una década es el enólogo Xavier Rubires, que reconoce que “Jean Leon” lo ha seducido y “atrapado” desde el primer momento. Define Jean Leon como “un proyecto absolutamente apasionante y adictivo”. Mireia Torres dice sentirse “muy orgullosa” de trabajar en una bodega “con una historia tan especial”.

También están apostando fuerte por el enoturismo.

Ofrecen desde maridajes o actividades con magia a paseos con bicicletas eléctricas o Segway, así como visitas teatralizadas. Como atractivo turístico, también exponen, tras restaurarlo y trasladarlo a la bodega de Torrelavit desde California, el exclusivo descapotable Mercedes de 256 CV que adquirió Jean Leon en 1972 y que conducía en Beverly Hills.

Cata vertical histórica

Coincidiendo con la segunda edición de la feria vinícola Temps de Vi de Vilanova i l Geltrú, Mireia Torres dirigió una memorable cata vertical histórica con gran reservas de Jean Leon. El Gran Reserva del 2003 (etiqueta de Josep Maria Subirachs representando a Marilyn Monroe con sus faldas al vuelo) muestra evidencias de que es fruto de una añada muy cálida.

Es maduro (ciruela pasa de California) y todavía duro.

Presenta una nariz compleja. El Gran Reserva del 2001 es un vino de una gran añada en el Penedès, bastante seca. Es equilibrado, elegante, frutoso, con taninos más redondeados que en el caso de la añada del 2003, con notas a cueros y una buena integración alcohólica.

La etiqueta de este vino, titulada ‘Transformación’, es obra de la artista Waltraud Maczassek, la madre de Mireia Torres. El Gran Reserva del 1998 fue uno de los que más me gustó. Es excelente, también fruto de una muy buena añada. Es emocionante, fragante (hierbas

1975, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2001. ‘82. He still remembers the bodega’s first vintages, selling at over 400 pesetas a bottle, as if it were yesterday.

Continuing the work of Jaume Rovira for the last ten years, alongside Mireia Torres, is oenologist, Xavier Rubires, who admits that “Jean Leon” captivated and “ensnared” him from the outset. He describes working at Jean Leon as “exciting and addictive”. Mireia Torres says she feels “very proud” to be working in a bodega “with such a special history.”

The company is also investing heavily in wine tourism.

Food pairing experiences, a wine and magic show, electric bicycle or Segway rides and theatrical tours can all be enjoyed at the winery. As a tourist attraction, they have on display the exclusive 256-HP Mercedes convertible which Jean Leon acquired in 1972 and used to drive around Beverly Hills. They had it restored and shipped to the Torrelavit bodega from California.

repartidas. Pimiento escalibado, anchoa, soto bosque mediterráneo, cueros y fruta negra confitada presentaba este excitante gran vino. La cata se cerró con otra joya, el Gran Reserva de 1975, el vino que se sirvió en el banquete de la coronación como presidente de los EE.UU. de Ronald Reagan. No fue el que más me gustó pero reconozco que es admirable que haya llegado al 2013 tan espléndido. Laurel, nueces y notas propias de la crianza en roble americano marcan un vino del cual quedan poco más de un centenar de botellas.

The 1998 Gran Reserva, was one of the ones I liked most. Also the result of a very good vintage, it is excellent, it is exciting, fragrant (aromatic herbs such as lemongrass), silky and long.

A great wine. I liked the 1994 Gran Reserva, with the label featuring the ‘wine glass’ work by Ràfols Casamada, for its minty freshness, lingering through and into the aftertaste. It shows maturity and balsamic notes. The 1982 Gran Reserva was, without doubt, the most exciting wine for me. It was year of widespread rainfall. This exciting fine wine was showing roasted peppers, anchovy, Mediterranean scrubland, leather and dark candied fruit. The tasting concluded with another little gem, the 1975 Gran Reserva, which was served at the banquet given at the investiture of Ronald Reagan as President of the U.S.A. It was not my favourite but I was impressed by the fact that it has reached 2013 in such a splendid condition. Laurel, nuts and notes from aging in American oak characterize a wine of which little over a hundred bottles remain. • – 13

Confiesa su inclinación por algunos riojas de los años 60 coincidiendo con la aparición en el mercado de Macán 09 (el deseado), nacido para reinar. Es el nuevo rioja que Vega Sicilia comparte con Benjamin de Rothschild. Dos grandes cabalgan juntos.

He is CEO of Vega Sicilia and the other excellent wineries in the Group, as well as being a member of the owning family. With the market release of Macan 09 (the chosen one - born to reign!), he admits to having a penchant for some 60’s style Riojas. Macan is the new Rioja produced by Vega Sicilia and Benjamin de Rothschild. Two great names riding out together.

Meses antes de salir al mercado el esperado Macán 2009, el primer rioja de Vega Sicilia, toda la producción, unas 80.000 botellas, ya estaba adjudicada. Pablo Álvarez se muestra feliz de haber podido poner su pica en su Flandes enológico, que claramente confiesa que es Rioja.

Months before the market release of the long awaited Macan 2009, the first Rioja from Vega Sicilia, the entire production of around 80,000 bottles had already been allocated. Pablo Alvarez is happy to have realized his wine dream, which he openly admits is Rioja.

¿Necesitaba el apellido Rothschild para acometer este sueño riojano?

Realmente no. En principio queríamos hacerlo solos pero cuando nos conocimos, y Benjamín de Rothschild expresó también su ilusión de poder hacer algo en Rioja, decidimos que bien podíamos hacerlo juntos.

Did it need the Rothschild name to embark on this dream?

Not really. Initially we wanted to go it alone but when we met and Benjamin de Rothschild also expressed a desire to do something in Rioja, we decided that we could do it together.

Esta idea viene de largo, ¿verdad?

Desde hace unos 12 años hemos ido comprando hectáreas de viñedo pero hasta el 2009 nadie supo que nosotros estábamos detrás. Se ha hecho poco a poco. La mayor parte de la viña se compró en San Vicente de la Sonsierra, famosa por sus excelentes agricultores. El criterio que seguimos para la elección del viñedo fue: que tuviera 35 años y que fueran clones de baja producción, aparte de los suelos claro… Aún nos faltan por comprar entre 5 y 10 hectáreas porque queremos elaborar en unos años unos

The idea had been around for a while, hadn’t it?

We’d been buying vineyards for around 12 years but nobody knew we were behind it until 2009. We did it very gradually. Most of the vineyards were purchased in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, known for its excellent growers.

The criteria we used for the selection of the vineyards was that the vines had to be 35 years old and low production clones, and the soil of course ... We still have to buy 5 to 10 hectares because we want to be producing around 300,000 kilos in a few years’ time. We’ve also purchased another 35 hectares of clean soil

300.000 kilos. También hemos comprado otras 35 ha de terreno limpio, para plantar viñedo un poco más cerca de Laguardia. Queremos establecer una rotación en la viña de manera que estén 85 ha en permanente producción y las otras 35.000 en descanso.

Esta larga espera conlleva una minucioso diseño del vino, del concepto, viñedo, bodega… ¿Cómo se han repartido los papeles?

La dirección técnica la llevamos nosotros. El nombre lo elegimos porque a los habitantes de San Vicente de la Sonsierra siempre se les ha llamado macanes. De momento tenemos una bodega alquilada sólo para nosotros, una bodega pequeñita que estaba cerrada pero era bastante moderna. Sólo podemos elaborar 120.000 kilos de uva en ella, estamos muy limitados en el espacio. El concepto que tiene nuestro macan es puro estilo bordelés, de primera y segunda marca. Elaboramos todo por igual, sin separación desde un principio. 14 lotes en depósitos de 10.000 kilos. Al final del envejecimiento se determina cuál será Macán y cual la segunda marca, Macan Clásico. Siempre el primer vino tendrá mayor producción, pero como no tenemos histórico, obviamente, ya iremos viendo.

Marca de lujo, precio asequible Curiosamente ha salido un modelo de Porsche que también se llama Macan. No sabemos en este caso el porqué, pero es buena coincidencia que las grandes marcan converjan.

Porsche, Rothschild y Vega Sicilia…

No se asusten que los precios del Macan cuatro ruedas nada tienen que ver con los del Macan embotellado. De bodega sale a unos 23 euros el Macan y el Macan Clásico a unos 12 euros. Más el correspondiente y dichoso IVA en ambos casos…

We want to create a rotation in the vineyards so that we have 85 hectares in permanent production and another 35,000 resting.

This long process also entails a complete design of the wine, the concept, vineyards, winery and so on… how have you assigned the roles?

We handle the technical management.

We named the wine after the inhabitants of San Vicente de la Sonsierra who have always been known as “Macanes”.

We’re currently renting a winery for ourselves, a tiny bodega that was closed but which was fairly modern. We can only handle 120,000 kilos of grapes there, we’re very restricted in terms of space. The concept of our Macan is pure Bordeaux style, with a first and a second wine. We produce everything in the same way, without separation right from the start, 14 batches in 10,000 kilo tanks. At the end of the ageing process we determine what will go into Macan and what will become the second wine, Macan Clásico. There’ll always be a bigger production of the first wine, but obviously as we’ve no history to go on, we’ll have to see how it goes.

Luxury brand, affordable price Interestingly, Porsche have brought out a new model which they’ve named “Macan”. We don’t know why they chose the name, but when great brands converge, it can only be positive. Porsche, Rothschild and Vega Sicilia,.... But don’t worry, the prices for the Macan in bottle bear no resemblance to those of the four-wheeled one. The ex-cellars price for Macan is around 23 euros and the Macan Clásico is around 12 euros. Plus, of course, the inevitable VAT on both,…

I imagine that you will build your own winery... Where and when?

Ya tenemos aprobado el proyecto. Es un proyecto sencillo pero muy bonito, firmado por un arquitecto español que tiene nombre extranjero, Enrique Johansson de Terry. Fue el que más nos gustó tras hacer una especie de mini concurso de ideas, privado, claro, ya que nosotros fuimos quienes decidimos. Intentamos tener terminada la nave de vinificación para la cosecha del próximo año. Ahora que no hay mucha construcción, es muy posible que podamos conseguirlo. El resto de la bodega más adelante. Ya hemos elaborado cinco cosechas en la bodega alquilada y estamos limitados como te decía por su capacidad. El lugar elegido para emplazar la bodega es Samaniego, en Rioja Alaves., porque nos gustó su emplazamiento justo debajo de la bonita Sierra de Cantabria.

liked him most of all after we ran a mini design concept contest, private, of course, as we were the ones making the decisions. We’re trying to get the vinification facility up and running for next year’s crop. Now that there is not a lot of construction work going on in Spain, it’s perfectly feasible. The rest of the winery will come later. We’ve already produced five vintages in the rented winery and, as I mentioned, were restricted by capacity. We chose the Samaniego site in Rioja Alaves for the winery because we liked its location just below the beautiful Sierra de Cantabria.

¿Cómo han reaccionado los bodegueros riojanos ante el desembarco de dos grandes como Vega Sicilia y Château Lafite?

Salvo los que siempre se enfadan, pase lo que pase… están contentos…

Cualquier marca famosa que vaya a un sitio es bueno para todos.

How would you describe your new Riojan baby, Macan?

It’s a completely different wine. We don’t like the style that Rioja has adopted in the last 30 years, lots of oak and long aging, nor do we like the latest examples of Rioja produced to a very international style in the vast majority, although they’re great quality. I remember the wines from the 50’s and 60’s like the great Vina Reales from the CVNE or the wines from Marqués de Murrieta and Marqués de Riscal. That’s what we must recover. There are wineries which work this way. Each Rioja area must rediscover its own personality, compared to the other areas and compared to other wines from around the world. In my humble opinion, if we want to maintain supremacy in the world, this is the way forward, not only for Rioja but for Spain and Europe. Rioja is about different climates, soils and very different styles. Apart from those who have been producing wine from grapes from a determined area, the identity has been lost because there’s been a lot of mixing together of grapes from different areas.

¿Cómo definiría a su nuevo hijo riojano Macán?

Es un vino completamente diferente.

No estamos de acuerdo con el estilo de Rioja de los últimos 30 años, mucha madera y largos envejecimientos, ni con los últimos ejemplos de rioja con un estilo muy internacional en su gran mayoría, aunque de gran calidad. Yo recuerdo vinos de los años 50 y 60 como los grandes Viña Reales de CVNE o los vinos del Marqués de Murrieta y Marqués de Riscal. Eso hay que recuperar. Hay bodegas que trabajan en ese camino. Es necesario que cada zona de rioja recupere su propia personalidad, frente a las demás y frente a los demás vinos del mundo. En mi modesta opinión ese es el futuro, no solo de Rioja sino de España y de Europa, si queremos

Rioja es diferente, climas, suelos y estilos muy diferentes. Salvo el que haya respetado elaborando sólo con las uvas de una determinada zona, se ha perdido la identidad porque se ha mezclado mucha uva de diferentes zonas.

Parecería que se emociona más con su nuevo hijo que con los anteriores…

No, no… lo que pasa es que me gusta mucho rioja. Es la primera zona de España de lejos… Y por muchas razones. En la Ribera también se pueden hacer grandes vinos pero es un bebé comparado con la Rioja. Ribera es una región administrativa, no histórica…

Su historia es de claretes. Durante 70 años Vega Sicilia fue la única bodega de la Ribera, concretamente desde 1864 hasta 1927, cuando apareció Protos, En un momento determinado se crea la Ribera del Duero porque España tenía que crear denominaciones de origen.

Y ya que están en Rioja, ¿acometerán la elaboración de un gran vino blanco?

Sé que le gustan los blancos…

Sí me gustan, sí… Tal vez… Ahora en Rioja tenemos algo de blanco, viura, que se lo estamos vendiendo a Muga.

Ya intentamos comprar una bodega en Jerez hace unos cinco años, la del Maestro Sierra pero su propietaria no quiso vender. Le ofrecimos comprarla sin que ella, Doña Pilar se marchara.

Teníamos vistas unas viñas muy especiales pata comprar también y un proyecto precioso pero no cuajó…

Pues sí que lo siento por lo que me toca de jerezana. Aunque podría parecer que estamos en Rioja, la entrevista se desarrolla en Vega Sicilia y Pablo Álvarez, con gran paciencia y amabilidad nos acompaña y enseña la nueva nave de elaboración: La mayoría de la gente piensa que estas bodegas antiguas no se cambian, permanecen siempre igual, pero estamos constantemente renovándonos.

You seem more excited about your new baby than your previous ones…

No, no… it’s just that I really like Rioja.

It’s Spain’s greatest wine region by far…

And for any reasons. You can make great wines in Ribera too but it’s an infant compared to Rioja. Ribera is an administrative, not a traditional, region. It has a history of rosé wines. Vega Sicilia was the only winery in Ribera for 70 years, specifically from 1864 up until 1927, when Protos appeared. Ribera del Duero was created because Spain had to create designations of origin at a point in time.

The great white hope Now that you’re in Rioja, will you embark on the production of a great white wine? I know you like whites,…

Well, yes I do... maybe… we’ve now got some white in Rioja, Viura, which we’re selling to Muga. We tried to buy a bodega in Jerez about five years ago, the Maestro Sierra bodega, but the owner wouldn’t sell. We offered to buy it and retain Doña Pilar. We'd seen some very special vineyards we wanted to buy, as well as a beautiful project, but it didn’t come off...

As a native of Jerez, I’m sorry to hear that…While it might seem that we are talking in Rioja, the interview is in fact taking place at Vega Siclia and Pablo Alvarez kindly takes the time to show us around the new production facilities: Most people think that these old cellars never change, that they always stay the same, but we’re constantly renovating them. This third production facility, the cooperage, the old store houses… everything has changed.

We go into a spectacular, semicircular facility where aesthetics and technological efficiency go hand in hand. Clean, curved lines, lovely design and a harmony of wood and steel.

This new facility is triple the size of the previous one, but handles the same volume of grapes. We now have 80 tanks here. Many tanks for the many vineyard plots, 6,000 and 8,000 kilos… we want each batch to be managed

Entramos en una espectacular nave semicircular, donde la estética comparte papel con la eficacia tecnológica. Lineas curvas, limpias, diseño y armonía entre madera y acero…

Esta nueva nave triplica a la anterior para elaborar la misma cantidad de uva. Aquí tenemos 80 depósitos ahora. De cada parcela, tantos depósitos, de 6.000 y 8.000 kilos, nada más, queremos que cada lote vaya diferenciado y prácticamente en lugar de trabajar 15 o 18 lotes como hacíamos antes hoy tenemos 50. Todos los lotes envejecen por separado hasta la mezcla final que es para lo que se ha hecho esta nave. Tenemos 6 cámaras de 8.000 kilos. Recogemos 50 toneladas diarias como máximo. El año que más, 370.000 kilo. Las cajas nunca tocan el suelo. No volcamos la uva y desde el campo vienen paletizadas.

No las movemos. Hay dos montacargas que las suben a las cámaras hasta el día siguiente. Bajamos cuatro o cinco grados para poder hacer una maceración anterior a la fermentación durante unos días… Lo empezamos en Pintia porque es una zona más rústica, y aunque Ribera no lo es tanto, creemos que así se extrae más fruta, el aroma a fruta. Esa es la idea. Doble mesa de selección de racimo y de después del despalillado para eliminar el resto del racimo. Se despalilla todo.

Techos de roble, temperatura constante, 17º C y humedad del 70% para que las maderas se conserven bien…

Estuvimos pensando en hormigón pero nadie te garantiza que no tengas microfisuras por tanto sería una fuente de contaminación y al final encargamos estos depósitos que no sólo llevan termorregulación sino un sistema aislante para que funcione con la misma inercia térmica que produce el hormigón. Incluso llevan para no sé qué historias de cargas eléctrica, una toma de tierra cada depósito… no sé… me sobrepasa…

differently and instead of working 15 or 18 batches as we used to, we now handle 50. Every batch ages separately until the final blend which is what this facility has been built for. We have 6 cold rooms of 8,000 kilos. We pick a maximum of 50 tons a day - 370.000 kilos in the biggest year. The trays never touch the

ground. We don’t tip the grapes and they come in from the vineyards on pallets.

We don’t shake them up. Two forklifts take them to the cold storage rooms until the following day. We reduce the temperature by four or five degrees to enable pre-fermentation maceration for a few days. We start in Pintia because it’s a more “rustic” area, and although Ribero isn’t so much, we believe that more fruit and fruity aroma is extracted this way.

That’s the idea. There’s a double sorting belt to remove the remaining leaves and twigs after stripping. The grapes are entirely de-stalked.

No me acuerdo ahora cuánto vale cada uno pero hice un cálculo y salía como si en cada vino utilizaras dos barricas nuevas.

El hecho de buscar la excelencia conlleva también el reciclaje. La cantidad de madera noble que en Vega Sicilia tiene su aprovechamiento.

A los cinco años renovamos todos los depósitos de madera. Los depósitos antiguos los utilizamos para conservación, para vinos ya hechos y cuando ya no nos sirven fabricamos con ellos las cajas para los doble magnums. Algunos también los vendemos a Domaine de Chevalier, Grand Cru Classé de Graves. No tienen más de cinco años y en España nadie los compraría.

Aun con la flamante nueva tonelería, el grupo es el cliente más importante de la firma francesa Radoux ya que compran 3000 barricas nuevas cada año para todas sus bodegas. Vamos caminando entre pilas y pilas de roble, perfectamente alineadas, que están “madurando” a la intemperie durante dos años y medio y luego pasarán otro año y medio bajo cubierta.

Each vat even has an earth wire, something to do with electrical charges, .. I’m not sure what exactly... it’s a bit over my head...

Do you know how much each of these vats cost?

I don’t remember how much each one is worth but I calculated that it was about the same cost as using two new barrels for each wine.

Any search for excellence involves recycling and Vega Sicilia uses a considerable amount of noble wood.

We replace all wooden vats after five years. We use the old vats for conservation, for vinified wines, and when we no longer have a use for them, we turn them into cases for double magnums.

We also sell some to Domaine de Chevalier, Graves Grand Cru Classé. They’re only five years old but nobody in Spain will buy them.

Despite their brand new cooperage, the Vega Sicilia group is the French cooperage, Radoux’s, biggest customer as it buys 3,000 barrels per year for all its wineries. We walk through piles and piles of perfectly aligned oak, which are “ageing” in the open air for two and half years before spending another 18 months under cover – a total of four years before being brought into the cooperage and turned into staves.

Pablo tells me, These ones come in green from Ohio.

We dry them.

Work in Vega Sicilia’s super modern cooperage continues to be carried out in the traditional way, under the experienced eye of master cooper, José Enrique. Toasting the barrels with oak wood…

PEDRO BALLESTEROS MW (Master of Wine) Todos conocemos Bélgica por su increíble variedad de cervezas de gran calidad, que incluye desde las cervezas clásicas de gran bagaje histórico hasta grandes marcas, pasando por muchas cervezas innovadoras, resultado de la capacidad única que tienen los belgas para continuar inventando nuevas cervezas. Pero se conoce menos que, en Bélgica como en Inglaterra, la cerveza fue el único remedio que les quedó a los monjes cuando el clima se hizo demasiado frío para mantener viñas, pero que hasta el siglo XV todas las grandes villas belgas presumían de sus viñedos. Pero cuando llegaron los fríos, mientras que en Priorat y Borgoña los monjes se dedicaban a hacer grandes vinos, los monjes trapistas belgas alcanzaron el cielo con sus cervezas.

Otro hecho bastante evidente cuando se visita el país es el magnífico mercado belga de vino. Por un lado, el belga reconoce y paga la calidad. Es por ello que las grandes regiones francesas de vinos de alta gama, St. Emilion, Pomerol, Borgoña, encuentran en Bélgica su mercado más fiel. Por otro lado, los belgas no están emocionalmente vinculados a ninguna región, son curiosos y aventureros. Gracias a ello, en Bélgica se encuentra cualquier vino, desde las marcas más internacionales a los vinos de proveniencia más improbable, desde los clásicos más conocidos a los vinos naturales más revolucionarios. El consumo per cápita de vino en Bélgica es muy superior al español. Pienso a menudo que el hecho que comprar vino en Bélgica sea más divertido que en España tiene algo que ver con esta situación.

We all know Belgium for its amazing variety of quality beers, ranging from the classic beers claiming a fine heritage to the big, well known brands, as well as many innovative beers, the result of the unique capacity of the Belgians to continuously invent new beers. Less well known is the fact that, in Belgium and England, the monks had to turn to brewing when the climate became too cold for them to cultivate vines, and that all big Belgian towns could boast of vineyards up until the 15th century. But when the cold arrived and the monks in Priorat and Burgundy took to making fine wine, the Belgian Trappist monks started producing heavenly beer.

The other thing that strikes you when you visit Belgium, apart from the beer, is the fantastic wine market. On the one hand, the Belgian consumer recognizes and pays for quality and, for this reason, Belgium has been a traditional market for the great French fine wine regions of St. Emilion, Pomerol, Burgundy, etc.

On the other hand, the Belgians are experimental and adventurous wine drinkers with no emotional ties to any particular wine region. As a result, all types of wine can be found in Belgium, from international brands to wine of the most unlikely origins, from the wellknown classics to revolutionary natural wines. Per capita wine consumption in Belgium is much higher than it is in Spain. I often think that the fact that wine buying is more fun in Belgium than it is in Spain might have something to do with this.

Perhaps because of their country’s brewing origins, Belgians particularly love their bubbles. According to statistics, each adult Belgian, of whatever age and drinking habits, consumes four litres of sparkling wine per year. These

belga de toda edad y costumbre se bebe cada año cuatro litros de vino espumoso. Y eso que las estadísticas no recogen el deporte nacional belga, que este que escribe de vez en cuando practica, de escaparse a la vecina Champagne para traerse unas cajitas ‘duty free’ en el maletero del coche. No es que el ahorro sea muy grande, el impuesto belga sobre los espumosos es unos 2 euros por botella, pero es divertido.

Bélgica es el tercer mercado de cava exportado, después de Alemania y Estados Unidos. Pero el primer mercado del mundo, incluyendo España, en consumo por cabeza, aún más si se considera su extrema concentración en una región, Flandes. ¡Los seis millones de flamencos consumen más que los sesenta millones de británicos! Aunque la razón más probable del gran éxito del cava en Bélgica sea la relación calidad/ precio, constato que el interés por el cava más ambicioso está aumentando.

Bélgica parece demasiado al Norte para poder cultivar la viña, pero las apariencias engañan. Durante la Edad Media, hasta que avino la ‘pequeña glaciación’ del siglo XV, algunas zonas en torno a Lieja eran reputadas por su producción de vino, asociada come era el caso en las mejores regiones francesas a la labor hospitalaria de las ordenes monásticas.

Luego vino la cerveza, y en el siglo XX no quedaba prácticamente nada.

Solo en 1997 se creó la primera denominación de origen belga, Hageland, seguida en el 2000 por Haspengouw y, en 2004, Côtes de Sambre-et-Meuse.

Pero todavía en 2004 la producción era bajísima, 1400 Hl, casi en su totalidad a partir de variedades selectas por su resistencia al frío más que por su potencial cualitativo. Ahora estamos hablando de producciones en torno a los 5000 Hl. En el siglo XXI, la conjunción de la sed belga de vino, las mejoras científicas en la viticultura y el cambio climático han permitido una pequeña revolución. Por un lado, el vino es un producto que alimenta el orgullo nacional. A poco que se haga algo decente, toda una población lo defiende con ardor. El lector español entiende perfectamente este hecho. El orgullo

statistics do not, however, take into account the Belgian national sport, which this writer occasionally practices himself, of whizzing down to neighbouring Champagne to bring back a few ‘duty free’ cases in the trunk of the car. It’s not that the savings are huge - Belgian tax on sparkling wines is about 2 euros per bottle - but it’s fun.

Belgium is the third largest export market for Cava, after Germany and the U.S. But it is the biggest market in the world, including Spain, in terms of per capita consumption of Cava, and the concentration of consumption is even bigger in the Flanders region. In fact, the Flemish population of six million consumes more Cava than sixty million Britons!

Although the most likely reason for Cava’s popularity in Belgium is its value for money, I have noticed that there is growing interest in higher quality Cavas.

You would think that Belgium was too far north to cultivate the vine, but appearances can be deceptive. In the Middle Ages, until the ‘Little Ice Age’ of the 15th century, some areas around Liège were reputed for their wine production associated, as was the case with the best French regions, with the hospital work carried out by the monastic orders. Then beer arrived, and by the 20th century there was practically nothing left. The first Belgian designation of origin, Hageland, was only created in 1997, followed by Haspengouw in 2000 and by Côtes de Sambre-et-Meuse in 2004. Back in 2004, production remained very low at 1,400 hl and almost entirely from grape varieties selected for their resistance to cold rather than for their quality potential. Today we are seeing production of around 5,000 hl.

In the 21st century, the combination of Belgium’s thirst for wine, scientific improvements in viticulture and climate change have sparked a mini revolution.

Wine is a product that stirs national pride. If it happens to be halfway decent, the entire population will defend it with a passion. This is something that natives of wine producing countries can relate to.

Y, finalmente, el clima ha cambiado, es mucho más templado, con veranos más largos y una mayor frecuencia de veranos y otoños soleados. Hace poco pude participar en una degustación profesional de la práctica totalidad de los vinos comerciales belgas, unos 90, y hacerme una idea bastante precisa de los puntos interesantes de este país.

Hay todavía una mayoría de vinos provenientes de variedades como solaris, bianca, johanniter, bronner, reichenstein, schonburger, rondo, regent y otros nombres tan poco atractivos como estos, casi todos ellos de proveniencia alemana, cuyo mayor mérito consiste en producir uvas con azúcar en climas bastante duros. Otras variedades creadas más recientemente, como acolon, pinotin o cabertin, generan en cultivos cuidadosos unas calidades interesantes para los nacionales y para curiosos impenitentes.

I was recently able to participate in a trade tasting of almost all the Belgian wines available on the market, around 90, and to get a fairly accurate picture of this country’s strong points.

There is still a majority of wines made from varieties such as Solaris, Bianca, Johanniter, Bronner, Reichenstein, Schönburger, Rondo, Regent or grapes with other similarly uninspiring names, most of them of German origin and whose greatest merit is to produce grapes with sugar in fairly tough climates.

Other more recently created varieties, such as Acolon, Pinotin or Cabertin, when carefully cultivated, produce some interesting quality wines for the enjoyment of Belgian wine drinkers and adventurous wine lovers.

I was prompted to write this article because we are now seeing the emergence of the first Belgian wines of international quality, which I will comment on in order of increasing interest. I will begin with the reds, where there is clearly one designation of origin which stands out from the others in quality terms, the

interés. Comienzo por los tintos, en los que de forma evidente hay una denominación de origen con una gran diferencia cualitativa con las demás, Côtes de Sambre-et-Meuse. Esta región tiene buenos suelos de viñedo y unas laderas expuestas al Sur que facilitan la maduración.

My favourite producer is Bon Baron who, although they also make sparkling and white wines, caught my eye with their very clean, fresh and fruity Pinot Noir red. Perhaps not as attractive, but

Quizá no tan atractivo, pero muy original, es su tinto de la variedad acolon, que reconozco que no había catado nunca antes: de medio cuerpo, con fruto rojo de bayas, suave, muy agradable.

La Mazelle es quizá el más original de los productores, con un enfoque comunitario y social que sorprende en los países de tradición productora. La Mazelle es de hecho una asociación sin ánimo de lucro, que cuenta con el trabajo gratuito de muchos voluntarios y destina sus beneficios a obras sociales. El vino tinto es interesante, con un toquecito verde en nariz pero

La Mazelle is perhaps the most original of the producers, with a community and social stance which traditional wine producing countries find surprising. La Mazelle is a non-profit association, with labour provided free of charge by a large number of volunteers and its proceeds going to social causes. The red wine is interesting, a touch green on the nose, but cheerful and clean on the palate with a nice finish.

Although it might appear that the cold Belgian climate would be better suited to the production of white wines, it is clear that high quality wine needs warmer terroirs and that fairly green

Clos d’Opleeuw is not the best known, probably because their production is

Clos d’Opleeuw no es el más conocido, probablemente porque su volumen de producción es pequeño, pero es muy interesante. Su chardonnay es realmente elegante, muy expresivo y persistente, con una bella integración aromática del roble (francés y ¡belga!).

Muchos borgoñas se atemorizarían de este vino. El segundo es muy conocido y apreciado, Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen. Plantado en suelos calcáreos, con una gran capacidad técnica, cosecha desde hace años muchos parabienes dentro y fuera de Bélgica.

Prefiero su Chardonnay Blauw, un

Their Chardonnay is really elegant, very expressive and long, with a beautiful aromatic integration of the oak (French and Belgian!). It could give many burgundies a run for their money. The second, Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen, is well known and respected. From vines planted in calcareous soils and produced with great technical competence, their wine has long been receiving many good reviews from both inside and outside Belgium. I prefer their Chardonnay Blauw, a very pure wine with beautiful balance, to their more well-known Chardonnay Goud, which I feel is too marked by barrel fermentation.

Now for the wines which Belgian producers and drinkers love the most, the sparklers. If you have Belgian friends

La Mazelle

vino muy puro con un bello equilibrio, que su vino más famoso, el Chardonnay Goud, en mi opinión está demasiado marcado por la fermentación en barrica.

Pasemos a los vinos que más alegría dan a productores y consumidores belgas, los espumosos. Si tienen amigos belgas amantes del vino, no tardarán mucho en ofrecerles las diferentes cuvées Ruffus de Domaine des Agaises, un espumoso méthode traditionnelle extremadamente popular en Bélgica. Mi preferido es la Cuvée Seigneur Brut Sauvage, un blanc de blancs, puro chardonnay, muy preciso en su expresión frutal cítrica y un poco málica, con unos toques de lía elegantes. No muy complejo, pero muy agradable. El chardonnay de Meerdael, un tanto más austero, tiene un punto de mineralidad que lo hace bastante original, canta sus orígenes norteños con honestidad y se deja beber a gusto. El Zilveren Parel de Genoels-Elderen es un espumoso bonito, de expresión muy bien cuidada, con el fruto limpio y los toques de levadura que lo hacen clásico, frutal al paso de boca y abierto en el final. Un vino comercial en el mejor sentido de la palabra, porque gusta a todos.

Termino con un vino que me emocionó, un vino que pienso que pone a Bélgica en el planeta de los grandes.

Hablo del Fibonacci de Schorpion, un vino de enorme complejidad, adquirida indudablemente en larga crianza sobre lías, construida a partir de un fruto de acidez excepcional pero con la suficiente madurez para mostrar una estructura sólida en boca.

El vino intriga en nariz, anima en el paso de boca y hace soñar en su final.

Una gozada, al nivel de los grandes espumosos, muy recomendable.

No creo que sea muy fácil encontrar vinos belgas en España, pero les sugiero que consulten estas recomendaciones en sus viajes a Bélgica. Son experiencias que valen la pena, y como se dice que donde vayas bebe lo que hagan, pues ya tienen buena excusa para pedir vino belga en Bélgica, que no solo de cerveza vive el hombre. ■

who are into wine, you should have them try the various Ruffus cuvées from Domaine des Agaises, a méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine, extremely popular in Belgium. My favourite is the Cuvée Seigneur Brut Sauvage, a pure Chardonnay blanc de blancs, very precise in its citrus fruit expression and a little malic, with elegant touches brought by the lees. Not very complex, but very enjoyable. The Chardonnay from Meerdael, somewhat more austere, has a touch of minerality that makes it quite original.

It displays its Northern origins honestly and is easy to drink. The Zilveren Parel from Genoels-Elderen is a nice sparkling wine, with a carefully crafted expression, clean fruit and touches of yeast that make it a classic wine, fruity on the palate with an open finish. This is a commercial wine, in the best sense of the word, because anyone can enjoy it.

I will conclude with the wine which I enjoyed the most, a wine which I think puts Belgium wine on the map. I am referring to Fibonacci from Schorpion, a wine of great complexity, no doubt acquired during its long aging on the lees, constructed from fruit of exceptional acidity but with enough maturity for it to show a solid structure on the palate. The wine is intriguing on the nose, excites on the palate and has you musing on the finish. A real treat, up there with the great sparklers, highly recommended.

I doubt that Belgian wines can be easily found outside Belgium, but I suggest you check out these recommendations when you visit the country. These are wine experiences worth trying and, as they say that wherever you go, you should try the local drink, you now have a good excuse to order a bottle of Belgian wine when in Belgium. After all, man does not live on beer alone. ●

Para encontrar una cifra de ventas más bajas cabría remontarse a 2005. Sin embargo durante los años 2010 y 2011 se registró una cantidad de expediciones que se situó entorno a los 3,7 millones de botellas, cifra que el Bureau du Champagne en España considera como “el núcleo central de lo que España consume, sea cual sea la situación coyuntural económica u otra”. Durante muchos años España ocupó el octavo lugar de los mercados de exportación del champán, y tan sólo en los dos últimos años ha descendido hasta el noveno lugar del ranking mundial. Para la directora del Bureau du Champagne en España, Núria Gené, “la situación actualmente es idónea, ya que España cuenta con más de 100 importadores profesionales de marcas de la Champagne, pertenecientes a todo tipo de elaborador: vigneron, cooperativa o maison. Asimismo, la formación de los sumilleres, de los compradores del canal HORECA y también de los consumidores ha avanzado de forma notable en los últimos años, según Núria Gené. Añade que “nos hallamos, pues, en un escenario idóneo para que el español compre, se deje aconsejar, consuma y especialmente descubra el universo Champagne y las múltiples propuestas en cuanto a sabor, ensamblaje, gusto y (también) precio que puede encontrar para su consumo.

The Spanish office, states that “Champagne is considered a luxury product. It is an undeniably high-end, gastronomic product and its price matches the quality and work that goes into each bottle. But the most significant step forward came when Spanish drinkers started to consider Champagne to

La accesibilidad a degustar el champán a copas, propiciada por los mejores bares (restauración o hoteles) ha atraído, según Núria Gené, “a un consumidor inteligente y curioso que empieza a consumir el champán como aperitivo o copa de media tarde”.

También considera que todavía existen ágapes en los que únicamente se bebe champán, pero las sugerencias de maridajes por parte de los gastrónomos y sumilleres, ha ampliado el espectro dirigiendo la atención del cliente a las múltiples posibilidades de momentos de consumo y de elección del tipo de champán. El núcleo de consumo de los 3,7 millones de botellas corresponde a un consumidor español informado y buen conocedor de los vinos espumosos, ya que, según Gené, “en su propio país tiene a uno de los más destacados de todo el mundo, y que por tradición y cultura, es amante del vino en general.

La apertura y proximidad de tiendas especializadas en nuestro país ha fomentado que, aunque España sigue siendo un país marquista en cuanto a los grandes nombres de la Champagne, los consumidores hayan ido descubriendo ensamblajes, champanes de vignerons o calidades de las marcas más conocidas que se han adaptado mejor a su gusto personal, al momento de degustación y a su presupuesto”.

Otro factor importante de animación en el mercado es el turismo de calidad que continúa visitando España y que tiene como hábito el consumir champán de forma regular. Destaca la baza de un turismo visita los mejores hoteles, restaurantes y discotecas de la Costa Brava, las Islas Baleares, Marbella o Sotogrande. Sin olvidar las grandes ciudades como Barcelona, Madrid o Sevilla. “Bilbao y San

According to Gené, the availability of Champagne by the glass, promoted by leading bars (restaurants or hotels) has attracted “a smart, experimental consumer who is starting to consume Champagne as an aperitif or mid-afternoon drink.” She also believes that there are still prestigious events where only Champagne is served, and that food pairing suggestions made by food experts and sommeliers have broadened Champagne’s scope, making the customer more aware of the many potential drinking occasions and different Champagne types. The core consumers of the 3.7 million bottles are Spanish drinkers who are well informed and well versed in sparkling wines because, according to Gené, “Spain boasts one of the most well known sparkling wines in the world, and Spanish consumers, due to tradition and culture, are generally wine lovers.

Although Spain is still a country which prefers big Champagne brands, the opening of local specialist stores in Spain has led to consumers discovering blends, vigneron Champagnes, and the various different types of Champagne produced by the best known brands which better suit their personal tastes, drinking occasions and budget.”

Another important market driver is the high-end tourism, regular drinkers of Champagne, which continues to come to Spain. There is a base level of tourism all year round. These tourists frequent top hotels, restaurants and nightclubs in the Costa Brava, Balearic Islands, Marbella and Sotogrande, as well as big cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and Seville. “Bilbao and San Sebastian also fall into this category of cities which attract men and women from around the world, for the culture, the shopping and/ or for international business purposes.

These visitors also like to dine in Spain’s top restaurants.” says the Champagne Bureau in Spain. This is a reference to the French, German or British visitors whose traditional taste for Champagne is well known. But Gené also states that “we can include the Russians or the Japanese, who have shown a taste

La directora del Bureau añade que “queda mucho por avanzar para que España pueda ocupar el lugar que le corresponde en los mercados exteriores del champán pero el camino y la situación están en un punto óptimo para que esto hecho se produzca. Entretanto todos los profesionales vinculados a este universo del champán continúan sin cesar sus actividades de presentación de nuevas calidades, promoción y difusión de las excelencias del champán”. Lo hacen en toda España, donde no hay semana en que no se produzcan dos o tres catas dirigidas a ampliar la formación de los sumilleres, por no hablar de los clubs de degustación de consumidores cada vez más numerosos en nuestro país. Desde el Bureau du Champagne en España, y siguiendo las directrices del Comité Champagne del que depende, “se ofrecen múltiples y diversas actividades, todas ellas encaminadas a acercar el champán al máximo de líderes de opinión y también al consumidor final, para que siga siendo considerado, tanto por los consumidores actuales como por los futuros que deberán descubrirlo y

This activity is taking place across Spain, where not a week goes by without two or three tasting events aimed at enhancing the Champagne knowledge of Spanish sommeliers, as well as that of consumers in the ever growing number of amateur tasting clubs. According to the Champagne Bureau in Spain, who follows guidelines set out by the Champagne interprofessional committee to which it is attached, “there are many different activities, all designed to bring Champagne closer to as many opinion leaders as possible, as well as the end consumer. These are aimed at ensuring that current and future drinkers (among them a new generation of young people who are starting to drink it), continue to consider Champagne as the best sparkling wine in the world, one which brings pleasure, sophistication and joie de vivre“.

For Pere Bonet, Freixenet Group’s communication director, the only Spanish company owning a Champagne house (Henri Abelé), the fact that Spain is a producer of fine wines and that there are seasoned drinkers of quality sparkling wines produced using the traditional method has, along with the bubbling tourism and gastronomy sectors, helped Champagne sales in Spain. He says that Cava has also experienced a spectacular rise in France, with sales figures

Para Pere Bonet, el director de Comunicación del grupo Freixenet, la única compañía española propietaria de una maison de la Champagne (Henri Abelé), el hecho de que España sea un país productor de grandes vinos y exista un consumidor avezado también a los espumosos de calidad elaborados siguiendo el método tradicional han favorecido, junto con la efervescencia turística y gastronómica, el éxito del champán en España.

Recuerda, sin embargo, que la espectacular ascensión del cava en Francia ha sido también muy notable, alcanzándose ya cifras similares de ventas a las que goza el champán en España.

Para Henri Abelé, que mantiene una producción estable de unas 450.000 botellas anuales, España es su segundo principal mercado, tras Francia.

Henri Abelé, con sede en Reims, es la tercera bodega más antigua de la Champagne. Desde 1757, “el enfoque de la compañía siempre se ha basado en elaborar, desde el respeto a la tradición, una gama completa de champanes en la que tiene un importante peso específico su colección de millésimées. Torres, con una larga experiencia representando prestigiosas marcas de la Champagne en España y también en mercados internacionales, inició en 2013 la distribución en España de los champanes de la firma Lanson, una maison fundada en 1760 que actualmente está en manos del grupo Bruno Paillard. Desde Torres se afirma que “en nuestro país hay una fuerte demanda de champán entre los consumidores de nivel adquisitivo más alto y entre los más entendidos en vinos y espumosos.

Muy probablemente ha habido una disminución de consumo del consumidor nacional que se verá compensado por este turismo de calidad, que tiene posicionado el champán como el producto de lujo por excelencia”. En lo que se refiere a Louis Roederer en particular, Rosal apunta que “podríamos decir que nuestro margen de crecimiento es importante, tanto a nivel de consumo nacional, donde todavía tenemos camino por recorrer, como a nivel de aprovechar este turismo creciente. Poco a poco Louis Roederer se va consolidando como una de las marcas familiares y de calidad de referencia”. Laia Rosal, que es miembro de la familia propietaria de las cavas Juvé Camps, entiende que cava y champán “no se tendrían que comparar”. Reconoce, sin embargo, que al ser España un país productor de cava, con un fuerte arraigo de este producto, es inevitable que el consumidor establezca cierta comparativa. Entiende también que “a nivel profesional son conocidas las diferencias de variedades, clima, terroir, etc, y como éstos afectan en el resultado final. Incluso a nivel de consumo cada producto tiene su

El “extraordinario” momento que está viviendo la gastronomía española es terreno abonado para el crecimiento del champán en España según Primeras Marcas ya que “nos sitúa en el punto de mira a nivel internacional y una parte de este turismo creciente viene atraído por la oferta gastronómica”.

Dicho esto, también recuerdan que “el consumidor nacional cada vez es más sensible y se interesa para aprender y conocer productos nuevos” Bajo la batuta del catalán Jordi Vinyals, la facturación de Laurent Perrier se ha incrementado en el último ejercicio (de abril del 2012 a marzo del 2013), un 1,9%, hasta los 222,9 millones de euros pese a “un contexto económico difícil en Europa”. Vinyals se incorporó en agosto de 2012 al grupo Laurent Perrier como director general comercial, de desarrollo de marca y de comunicación. Especialmente significativo ha sido el repunte de Laurent Perrier en España (en el último ejercicio las ventas crecieron un 22%), el noveno mercado mundial para Laurent Perrier y también para el global del sector del champán. En lo que va de nuevo ejercicio sus ventas siguen creciendo en España, de la mano de la riojana firma Marqués de Riscal como distribuidora, por encima de los dos dígitos, entre un 10 y un 15%. Tiene fundadas esperanzas en España, donde en 2007 llegaron a venderse la cifra récord de 4,7 millones de botellas de champán, “por tratarse de un mercado con una arraigada cultura del vino espumoso de calidad y por su emergencia turística y gastronómica”. Opina, sin embargo, que excepto en Catalunya, Madrid, el País Vasco, Málaga, Marbella y las Islas Baleares, el mercado español “aún no es lo suficientemente maduro”. Vinyals también ve “grandes oportunidades” de crecimiento en el continente africano (especialmente en las ex colonias francesas), en la Europa del este, en América latina y en Asia. Afirma que cava y champán no pueden compararse puesto que, a

Vinyals believes, however, that with the exception of Catalonia, Madrid, the Basque Country, Malaga, Marbella and the Balearic Islands, the Spanish market “is still not mature enough.” Vinyals also sees “big opportunities” for growth in Africa (especially in the former French colonies), in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia. He says that Cava and Champagne cannot be compared because, despite the fact that both are quality sparkling wines produced by the traditional method, “they are different products.” He does not quite go as far as to state that Champagne is better than Cava but he does believe that “Champagne has been able to create much more added value than Cava has”. He also considers it a weakness that the Cava sector does not have an organizational set up like the “Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne”, i.e. an interprofessional organisation in which the Champagne houses hold only 10% of the growing surface area. In fact, in the Champagne region, which produces the most prestigious and best-selling sparkling wine in the world (308 million bottles in 2012), they are surprised that a kilo of grapes

De hecho, en la Champagne, donde se produce el vino efervescente más vendido (308 millones de botellas en 2012) y prestigioso del planeta, no deja de causar asombro que un kilo de uva se pague en el sector del cava a una media situada por debajo de los 40 céntimos. En Laurent Perrier, según Vinyals, se paga una media que ronda los 5 euros por kilo. También apunta que “las maisons de Champagne tienen muy claro que venden un vino pero también ilusiones y lujo. A diferencia de otras firmas, el lujo para Laurent Perrier no es la ostentación, sino un concepto epicúreo, la elegancia de la simplicidad, la pasión del artesano por el trabajo muy bien hecho, una expresión del arte de vivir a la francesa”. Dice que cree estos valores con los que se identifica serán cada vez más importantes.

Aunque las ventas reflejan un descenso de importaciones de champán y que la crisis sin ha restado ventas, el futuro del champán en España es positivo en la opinión de Antonio Escofet, el director comercial del Grupo Bodegas Chivite, que importa en exclusiva para España los champanes de la maison Taittinger. Entiende que “el champán ha entrado en el mercado en la última década, y ha entrado para quedarse”. Cree también que “el descenso de ventas es coyuntural debido a la situación del mercado por la crisis, pero dentro del descenso de ventas hay distintos comportamientos. Uno de los motivos principales del descenso lo encuentro en la reducción

Antonio Escofet, commercial director of the Bodegas Chivite Group, the exclusive importer of Taittinger Champagnes in Spain, believes that “although sales reflect a decline in Champagne imports and have been hit by the economic crisis, the future of Champagne in Spain is bright, He believe that “Champagne entered the market in the last decade and is here to stay.” He also believes that “the decline in sales is temporary as the market is impacted by the economic crisis, but within the sales decline there are different behaviours.

El director comercial de Chivite no tiene dudas de que cava y champán no deberían de compararse: “son dos momentos, circunstancias y consumidores distintos”.

Dicho esto apunta que “la alta restauración y el éxito mundial de nuestra cocina es, sin duda, un gran apoyo al consumo del champán puesto que sus clientes están acostumbrados a tomar lo mejor sin importar en nivel de precio. El gran trabajo de la restauración en España ayuda a todos; a la imagen del país, al desarrollo de vinos españoles (donde sí tenemos vinos con imagen y calidad, reconocida internacionalmente) y es un fuerte apoyo a todo el mercado turístico en general, y un motivo de captar a este cliente de alto poder adquisitivo”. Taittinger es la tercera marca de ventas en España: una de las pocas marcas internacionales que siguen siendo propiedad de la marca que lleva su apellido. Su presidente, Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger dirige la empresa acompañado por sus hijos, Vitali, responsable corporativa y de diseño, y Clovis, responsable de la exportación.

It also provides strong support for the tourism market in general, and a good reason to capture this customer with high purchasing power.” Taittinger is the third biggest Champagne brand in Spain: one of the few international brands which remain the property of the family whose name it bears. Its president, Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger, runs the company along with his children: Vitalie, who manages corporate affairs and design, and Clovis, who manages exports. ●

Desde el culto a la chardonnay hasta la recuperación de las variedades autóctonas –godello, albariño, garnacha blanca, xarelo, etc.,–, en poco más de una década las bodegas españolas han cambiado radicalmente su perspectiva para crear grandes vinos blancos en un país tradicionalmente dominado por los tintos.

Con permiso de los venerables vinos de Jerez, España ha sido sobre todo un país de tintos. Tanto en los afectos del bebedor autóctono como en la apreciación de los mercados internacionales, que históricamente han reclamado a las bodegas españolas los vinos rojos.

No siempre fue así. Hubo un tiempo en el que incluso en Rioja el vino blanco era considerado como más elegante y adecuado para los señores de paladar fino. En sus Noticias históricas de la muy noble y muy leal Ciudad de Haro, Domingo de Hergueta confirma la antigua supremacía del blanco sobre el tinto: en 1669, se recogieron en Haro 36.266 cántaras de vino blanco y tan sólo 6.733 de tinto.

In his historical notes on “the very noble and loyal City of Haro”, Domingo de Hergueta confirms the former supremacy of white over red, 36,266 “cántaras” (16 litres) of white wine and only 6,733 “cántaras” of red were collected in Haro in 1669.

Odious comparisons Much water has flowed under the bridge since that time, or rather much wine has been imbibed, until today, when the tables have been turned and red wines are considered a considerably superior beverage, throughout Spain.

This idea has been reinforced, by the ordinary quality of the whites, which with a few exceptions, only just scraped a pass, until recently.

But times change and just as we have seen the rise of quality reds in all Spanish wine regions in recent decades it is now time for the whites to step up to the plate.

Some visionary growers and winemakers

A ello están abocados algunos viticultores y enólogos visionarios, que se empeñan en elaborar grandes vinos, superando el concepto de blancos sencillos y refrescantes.

El modelo borgoñón Hay que decir, eso sí, que en los últimos quince años la perspectiva para dar con el gran blanco español ha cambiado de forma radical. Porque si hasta los últimos estertores del siglo pasado, los bodegueros vernáculos miraban hacia Francia a la hora de encontrar el modelo –y también las variedades– que pudiera inspirarles para encontrar el blanco soñado, en la última década se comprobó que la grandeza ya estaba en casa. Que era posible elaborar blancos de altura a partir de uvas autóctonas: albariño, godello, garnacha blanca, viura, xarelo, verdejo...

De aquella obsesión por el modelo francés –o borgoñón, más precisamente– persisten ejemplos notables, como el venerado Chivite Colección 125 Chardonnay FB o los blancos “de finca” de bodegas Torres, Milmanda y Fransola.

El de Chivite es quizás el arquetipo del gran chardonnay español, y fue lanzado en el año 1985. Hoy ya se sabe que los Chivite acudieron al eminente enólogo bordelés Denis Dubourdieu para conseguir su objetivo. “Cuando comprobé que las viñas de chardonnay de esta propiedad estaban plantadas en suelos calcáreos, en un clima continental y una altitud media de 500 metros, supe que teníamos que seguir el modelo borgoñón para obtener el gran blanco con el que soñaban los Chivite.”

En cuanto a Torres, consagró dos de sus viñedos emblemáticos –el que se encuentra junto al castillo de Milmanda, en la D.O. Conca de Barberà y la finca Fransola, en Santa María de Miralles, en el Alt Penedès– para producir dos ambiciosos monovarietales, uno de chardonnay (Milmanda) y otro a partir de sauvignon blanc (Fransola).

The Burgundy model I must say, however, that the outlook for producing a great Spanish white has changed dramatically in the last fifteen years. Because, although until the very end of the last century, Spanish producers looked to France for a model, as well as the grape varieties, which might inspire them to make their dream white, in the last decade it has been discovered that greatness lies at home. We have seen that it is possible to produce high quality whites from indigenous grape varieties such as Albariño, Godello, Garnacha Blanca, Viura, Xarelo, Verdejo, etc.

There are still notable examples which are the result of the obsession with the French, or specifically the Burgundy model, such as the revered Chivite Collection 125 Chardonnay FB or the estate whites from the bodegas of Torres, Milmanda and Fransola.

Chivite’s is perhaps the closest to the archetype of the great Spanish Chardonnay, and was released in 1985.

Today we know that the Chivites called on the services of the eminent Bordeaux oenologist, Denis Dubourdieu, to achieve their goal. According to the Frenchman. “When I checked that the Chardonnay vines on the property were planted on calcareous soils in a continental climate and at an average altitude of 500 metres, I knew that, to obtain the great white that the Chivites were dreaming of, we had to follow the Burgundy model”.

As for Torres, it devoted two of its iconic vineyards, the one adjacent to the Castillo de Milmanda in the Conca de Barbera D.O., and the Fransola estate in Santa Maria de Miralles in the Alt Penedès, to the production of two high quality single varietal wines, one a Chardonnay (Milmanda) and the other a Sauvignon Blanc (Fransola).

It should be remembered that “chardonnization” had been in vogue in wine regions around the world and Spain was no exception. At least until

Enopatías – Oenopathy vigente en todo el viñedo global. Y España no era una excepción. Al menos, hasta que comenzaron a asomar otros blancos ambiciosos, producidos, estos sí, con uvas autóctonas.

El primero en dar la campanada fue Belondrade y Lurton, producido en Rueda también según el modelo borgoñón, que atiende a una cuidadosa fermentación y crianza en barricas.

Pero, a pesar de estar firmado por un francés –Didier Belondrade– este vino revolucionó la España Blanca porque demostró que se podía aspirar a la grandeza utilizando una uva local, en este caso la verdejo. Dos décadas después, son unos cuantos los blancos de Rueda que han seguido el ejemplo de Belondrade, fermentando los mostos en barricas: Ossian, Naiades, José Pariente...

Mientras Rueda descubría esta nueva faceta de la humilde verdejo en otros puntos del viñedo español sucedía algo parecido.

En Galicia, por ejemplo, donde algunos viticultores visionarios de las Rias Baixas comprobaron que la albariño también podía tener un recorrido más largo, tanto en su expresión como en lo que respecta a su pervivencia en la botella. Así, algunos se atrevieron a pasar sus vinos por barrica, aunque los que dieron en el blanco optaron por envejecerlos en depósitos de acero y en la propia botella. Es el caso del Pazo de Señorans Selección de Añada, uno de los más grandes blancos españoles, que llega al mercado tras madurar más de cinco años en la bodega.

Hoy ya hemos podido comprobar que la grandeza de Galicia va mucho más allá de las Rias Baixas. En la Ribeira Sacra, por ejemplo, donde el joven Dominio do Bibei produce dos vinos excelentes, Lapena y Lapola, a partir de godello, albariño y otras uvas. La primera de estas variedades es también protagonista en otra D.O. gallega, Valdeorras, donde se ha revelado como la materia prima perfecta para dar a luz blancos de expresión

Verdejo’s unsuspected longevity The first wine to cause a stir was Belondrade & Lurton produced in Rueda and also following the Burgundy model, undergoing careful fermentation and ageing in barrels. But despite being produced by a Frenchman, Didier Belondrade, this wine revolutionized Spanish whites because it showed that you could aspire to greatness using a local grape, the Verdejo in this instance. Two decades later, a few whites from Rueda have followed the example of Belondrade, fermenting musts in barrel: Ossian, Naiads and José Pariente, etc.

While Rueda discovered this new facet to the humble Verdejo, something similar was happening in other Spanish wine regions.

In Galicia, for example, where some visionary winemakers in Rias Baixas proved that the Albariño could also go a longer distance, both in terms of expression and longevity in bottle.

So some producers dared to put their wines in oak, although those who were most successful opted to age theirs in steel vats and in bottle. This is the case of the Pazo de Señorans Selección de Añada, one of the greatest Spanish whites, which is released on the market after five years cellar ageing.

Today we have already seen that Galicia’s greatness extends far beyond the Rias Baixas. In the Ribeira Sacra, for example, where the young Dominio do Bibei produces two excellent wines, Lapena and Lapola from Godello, Albariño and other grapes. The first of these varieties also plays a leading role in another Galician D.O., Valdeorras, where it has proved to be the perfect base material for a white with a delicious, silky expression and good aging capacity. One of the most successful examples of Godello’s capability in Valdeorras is As Sortes, the white made by Rafael Palacios, who comes from a long line of wine producers.

La xarelo más allá del cava En Cataluña, el redescubrimiento de las uvas autóctonas tiene varios frentes. En el Penedès, en los últimos años se ha puesto en valor especialmente a la xarelo, que ha pasado de ser una tercera parte en la trilogía tradicional del cava –junto a la macabeo y la parellada– a lucirse también como solista en blancos de fino perfil frutal y mineral, que también pueden soportar una crianza en barrica sin perder sus señas de identidad y aspirar a una larga guarda. Es el caso de Initio, de la bodega Parés Baltà, elaborado bajo preceptos biológicos, y madurado sobre lías en barricas de roble francés y húngaro, durante 4 meses.

En otras denominaciones catalanas la apuesta por concebir grandes blancos se ha orientado en torno a la garnacha blanca. Así, en la D.O. Terra Alta, Joan Angel Lliberia produce actualmente uno de los mejores blancos españoles, Edetària, utilizando tan sólo la uva que ofrecen viñedos de más de 60 años plantados sobre dunas fósiles y criando el vino durante ocho meses en botas de roble francés de 300 litros. También en Tarragona, aunque en este caso en la D.O. Montsant, la garnacha blanca adquiere señas de gran nobleza en el Tros Blanc, el blanco que elabora el arquitecto Alfredo Arribas a partir de la fruta que crece en pequeñas parcelas con suelos arenosos y calcáreos.

Como su hermana tinta, la garnacha blanca está ofreciendo muchos otros vinos interesantes no sólo en Cataluña, sino en otros enclaves del viñedo peninsular, como Méntrida. De allí procede el singular Loco, producido por la joven bodega Canopy y “vestido” con una camisa de fuerza de estética frenopática.

Volviendo a Cataluña, no se puede cerrar el capítulo de los grandes blancos

Xarelo outside Cava In Catalonia, the rediscovery of indigenous grape varieties is taking several fronts. In Penedès in recent years they have really brought out the Xarelo in particular, gone from being the third grape in the traditional Cava trilogy alongside Macabeo and Parellada, to shine as a soloist in white wines which have a fine fruity, mineral profile, which can also bear barrel aging without losing their identity and show good ageing potential. This is the case of Initio, from the Parés Baltà bodega’s wide range, made from grapes grown organically and matured for 4 months on the lees in French and Hungarian oak barrels.

In other Catalan designations, the quest for great whites is now focusing on the Garnacha Blanca. In the Terra Alta D.O., Joan Angel Lliberia, now produces one of the best Spanish whites, Edetària, using grapes exclusively from vines that are over 60 years old, planted on fossil dunes and matured for eight months in 300 litre French oak barrels. Also in Tarragona, although in this case in the Montsant D.O., the Garnacha Blanca is showing signs of great nobility in Tros Blanc. This white is produced by architect, Alfredo Arribas, from grapes grown in small plots with sandy and calcareous soils.

Like its sister red grape variety, Garnacha Blanca is creating many interesting wines not only in Catalonia, but in other Spanish wine enclaves such as Méntrida. This is the home of the very original Loco, produced by young bodega, Canopy, which is actually presented “strapped up” in a straitjacket.

Returning to Catalonia, we cannot close the section on its great whites without mentioning two exotic yet enjoyable wines: La Calma and El Rocallís, both produced by Carlos Esteva (Can Rafols dels Caus) from varieties which are unusual for Spain: Chenin Blanc (La Calma) and Incroccio Manzoni (El Rocallís). The latter is a Riesling-Pinot Blanc hybrid.

Por fin, no se puede especular acerca de los grandes blancos españoles sin tener en cuenta a la capital “tinta” por excelencia de este país: Rioja. Allí perviven blancos elaborados a la vieja usanza, que reivindican el poderío de la variedad viura para envejecer con nobleza, acompañada a menudo de otras uvas autóctonas, como la malvasía o la garnacha blanca. El ejemplo más excelso de este tipo de vinos es el Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, cuya añada más reciente es ¡1991!

Por suerte, la familia López de Heredia –propietaria de Viña Tondonia– ya no está sola en la defensa del blanco riojano. Existen unos cuantos viticultores de nueva generación que también se han involucrado en llevar al Olimpo a la viura y la garnacha blanca, frente al empuje de otras. Gracias a ellos, la D.O.Ca. Rioja cuenta con unos cuantos blancos excelsos, entre los que hay que mencionar Qué bonito cacareaba de Benjamín Romeo y el Mártires de Finca Allende.

Amén de los vinos mencionados, la nueva geografía de la España Blanca incluye algunos otros más excéntricos, firmados por viticultores tan sensibles como audaces, dispuestos a recuperar uvas olvidadas en el cajón de los recuerdos o experimentar con otras jamás cultivadas en estas latitudes.

El conjunto de todos estos vinos alimenta la esperanza de que, en un futuro no muy lejano, España será, amén de tierra de tintos, también un gran país de blancos. Que el dios Baco así lo permita.

including Spain’s “red wine capital” par excellence: Rioja. Whites made in the old style can still be found, using the might of the Viura variety to age with nobility and often accompanied by other indigenous grapes such as Malvasia and Garnacha Blanca. The finest example of this type of wine is Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, the most recent vintage of which is... 1991!

Fortunately, the Lopez de Heredia family, who owns Viña Tondonia, is no longer alone in the defense of white Rioja. There are a few, new generation winemakers who are also working to lift the Viura and Garnacha Blanca to the pinnacle of their quality potential, resisting the push of other varieties.

Thanks to these producers, the Rioja D.O.Ca has some excellent whites, among which we must mention Qué Bonito Cacareaba from Benjamin Romeo, and Mártires from Finca Allende.

In addition to the wines mentioned above, the new geography of Spanish whites includes a few more eccentric wines, made by bold, perceptive producers, willing to recover grape varieties tucked away in the cupboard of time or to experiment with varietials never before grown in Spain.

Together, these wines bring hope that, in the not too distant future, Spain, as well as being a land of red wines, will also be a country of great whites. By the grace of Bacchus! ●

Finca Allende es la culminación de un sueño que su alma mater, Miguel Ángel De Gregorio, inicia a principios de los años 90 y que arranca en Briones, municipio situado al norte de la Rioja Alta y que asienta sus viñedos sobre suelos marcadamente arcillosos. Con métodos más modernos que utilizan una crianza justa en barricas de roble, y que recompensan el predominio de la fruta sobre el de la madera, son vinos concebidos para ofrecer una gran concentración sin concesiones y con una marcada personalidad que ha llevado a Finca Allende ser un referente actual en la Rioja. Desde principios de la pasada década, disfrutan de una nueva bodega integrada en un edificio de piedra del siglo XVII y que bien merece el viaje.

Vista: Rojo purpura muy profundo.

Realmente oscuro y seductor.

Nariz: Intenso, agradable y complejo. Fruta roja y negra entrelazada con notas de roble cremoso, cacao y especies. Maravilloso.

Boca: Redondo y bien domado. Presencia constante de fruta fresca. Recuerdos de crianza muy sabrosos y final terroso. Largo.

En evolución.

Comentario: A pesar de ser un año complicado, el Aurus 2008 es un vino de cabecera. Robusto, tostado y generoso, sigue manteniendo intacta su inmaculada corona de vino top de la bodega. Nace de cepas sexagenarias que concentran el fruto hasta transmitir naturaleza y pureza de una manera genuina, como solo Miguel Ángel de Gregorio nos tiene acostumbrados. Bien merece ser ahora abierto y disfrutado pero su mejor valedor será el tiempo que lo retendrá encerrado en botella, dándole al menos un decenio para sonsacarle toda su elegancia.

Un candidato a ofrecernos maravillosas veladas alrededor de una mesa. El compañero fiel de lomo alto vetado braseado como mínimo.

Finca Allende is the culmination of a dream which its alma mater, Miguel Angel de Gregorio, set in motion the early 90’s in Briones, a town in the north of the Rioja Alta, where the vineyards grow on prominently clayey soils. Produced using ultra-modern methods which include judicious ageing in oak barrels, compensating the predominance of the fruit over the oak, these are wines designed to deliver high concentration without compromise and the strong personality which has led to Finca Allende becoming a reference in Rioja today. Since the beginning of the last decade, they have been installed in a new winery built inside a 17th century stone building which is well worth a visit.

Appearance: Very deep crimson red.

Really dark and seductive.

Nose: Intense, pleasant and complex. Red and black fruit laced with notes of creamy oak, chocolate and spices. Wonderful.

Palate: Smooth and well tamed.

Persistent fresh fruit. Delicious aromas from ageing and an earthy finish. Long.

Evolving.

Comment: Despite being a difficult year, Aurus 2008 is a top notch wine. Robust, toasted and generous, it preserves its crown of the bodega’s top wine. It comes from sixty year old vines that concentrate the fruit to convey nature and purity in an authentic way, as only Miguel Angel de Gregorio has accustomed us to. Well worth opening now but time will be its best ally, keeping it locked in the bottle for at least a decade longer to coax out all its elegance.

A good candidate for wonderful long evenings around the table and a faithful companion to brazed rib-eye steak.

El Tinto The Red Interesante proyecto catalán que nace en 1998 de la mano de seis amigos suizos relacionados con el mundo del vino y que tiene su origen en Calonge, a tan solo cinco kilómetros de la costa, a los pies del entorno natural de Les Gavarres y que salpica de profundidad mediterránea este espacio único, tan bucólico y tan unido al vino desde hace siglos. Cuentan con 15 hectáreas de viñedo y básicamente han desarrollado el cultivo de variedades bordelesas con variedades blancas como Viognier, Marsanne y Roussanne más propias del Ródano. Han contado desde los inicios con el asesoramiento técnico del reconocido enólogo Peter Sissek, propietario y creador de Pingus en Ribera del Duero y realmente han alcanzado el propósito de colocarse, año tras año, como un referente de vino de calidad producido en el país, con una notable aceptación en mercados internacionales.

Vista: Rojo picota con ribete mora de capa muy alta.

Nariz: Cremosa, muy frutal, con recuerdos a confituras de frutos negros. Notas de cacao y vainilla muy presentes que no molestan.

Delicioso.

Boca: Fresca, sorprendentemente no es pesada pero si muy redonda. Recuerdos oscuros con notas de grafito. Tanino bien pulido aun siendo tan joven. Tostados evidentes y final de boca largo y sabroso.

Comentario: Un estilo robusto, pleno y de carácter bordelés se esconde en las entrañas de este ejemplar 2010 que nos demuestra la madurez del proyecto catalano-suizo iniciado a finales de los 90 y que quince años después se sigue mostrando rompedor en nuestro territorio como lo fue en su estreno.

El jugo sabroso que nos muestra esta añada refleja fielmente el carácter mediterráneo que lo caracteriza y no adolece un ápice el sabio uso de roble que lo adorna, siendo un tinto cremoso, casi fundido en boca que derrocha sabor y categoría. Es un fiel ejemplar a tener en cuenta si se quiere sorprender en una mesa y a reservar en el espacio de todo aficionado que quiera culminar su bodega con los tintos gerundenses de acento afrancesado. Que lo enfrenten a preparaciones más contundentes puede ser buena baza. Aquí la nuestra, pescado blanco con salsa bordelesa y setas…no siempre jugaremos con la carne.

This is an interesting Catalan wine busi business, created in 1998 by six Swiss friends with links to the wine world. It is based in Calonge, just five kilometres from the coast, at the foot of the Gavarres natural park, its Mediterranean character permeating a unique, bucolic area which has been associated with wine for centuries. They have 15 hectares of vineyards where they have perfected the growing of Bordeaux grape varieties along with white varietals from the Rhône such as Viogner, Marsanne and Roussanne. Having had recourse right from the outset to technical advice from the renowned oenologist, Peter Sissek, owner and creator of Pingus in Ribera del Duero, they have achieved their objective of positioning themselves, year after year, as a benchmark of Spanish wine quality, very well received in international markets.

Appearance: Very intense cherry red with a blackberry coloured rim.

Nose: Creamy, very fruity, with hints of dark jammy fruit. Very strong but not unpleasant notes of cocoa and vanilla.

Delicious.

Palate: Fresh, surprisingly it is not heavy but in fact very smooth. Dark aromas with notes of graphite. Well polished tannin although still very young. Pronounced toasted aromas and a luscious, long aftertaste.

Comment: A full rugged style of Bordeaux character lies deep in the guts of this 2010 which illustrates the maturity of the Swiss Catalan venture started in the late 90’s and which, fifteen years later, is still as groundbreaking in Spain as it was at its inception. The tasty wine produced by this vintage faithfully reflects the Mediterranean personality which characterizes it and is nicely embellished by the intelligent use of oak. It is a creamy red wine, which almost melts in the mouth and exudes delicious flavours and pure class. You can count on it to surprise guests at the dinner table and it will suit any wine enthusiasts wanting to top off their cellar with some Girona red wines with a French accent. Pairing this wine with heartier dishes could be a trump move. Here’s our suggestion, white fish with a bordelaise sauce and mushrooms ... a nice change from meat!

Nariz: Necesita decantación previa y horas de paciencia para finalmente abrir un enorme abanico de aromas a licor de grosellas con infusión de hierbas aromáticas, regaliz, trufa y chocolate.

Boca: Sorprende que a pesar de ser un vino espeso, glicérico y superconcentrado muestra un equilibrio y una elegancia inusual.

Enorme longitud. Es capaz de evolucionar sin problemas durante 15-20 años más .

Comentario: El Amarone della Valpolicella Classico de Quintarelli es uno de los grandes vinos de toda Italia, y un ejemplo de absoluto rigor en el viñedo por encima del trabajo en bodega, buscando siempre una fruta de la máxima calidad.

Podríamos definirlo como un vino curioso y raro elaborado siguiendo la tradición más antigua, o sea recogiendo la uva en cajas de madera, pasificándola luego en los “fruttaios” de caña de bambú para finalmente pasarse 7 años en grandes toneles de roble de Eslavonia.

Está más que buscado, producciones microscópicas de botellas a elevadísimos precios que solo aparecen en determinados años, los mejores.

Tocarán el cielo tomándolo junto con un queso Parmigiano Reggiano Extra Vecchio al final de una comida.

Located in the village of Negrar, in the middle of the Valpolicella valley, amid vineyards interspersed with olive and cherry trees, is the Azienda Agricola Quintarelli.

This azienda is a veritable reflection of ancient tradition and extreme purity, allied with the more “contemporary” personal aspirations of its alma mater, Giuseppe Quintarelli, who is sadly no longer with us, having passed away at the start of 2012.

Generosity, density, opacity, along with unrivaled ageing ability, are the hallmarks of these magnificent wines, regrettably little known by the general public. They are intrinsically tied to a unique, challenging and magical production process which turns them into iconic wines.

Appearance: Cherry red hue, almost opaque black.

Nose: Needs decanting and hours of patience before it finally opens up with a panoply of aromas including currant liqueur infused with herbs, liquorice, truffles and chocolate.

Palate: Despite being a dense, glycerin and super-concentrated wine, it shows surprising balance and unusual elegance.

Enormous length. It is capable of developing smoothly for another 15-20 years.

Comment: The Amarone della Valpolicella Classico from Quintarelli is one of the greatest wines in all of Italy, and an example of painstaking work in the vineyards as well as in the winery, aimed at obtaining the highest quality grapes.

It could be described as a curious and rare wine made in the old tradition, picking and placing the grapes in wooden trays, naturally drying them out in the “fruttaios” (drying rooms) on bamboo racks and then finally ageing the wine for 7 years in large Slavonian oak casks.

With a microscopic production selling at very high prices and only available in certain years (the very best of course), this wine is more than sought after.

Total bliss when paired with some Parmigiano Reggiano Extra Vecchio at the end of a meal.

El Tinto The Red Hermoso proyecto nacido bajo el amparo de Rene Barbier, Fernando Zamora (Clos Mogador) y Christopher Cannan (Clos Figuera) que ha situado la garnacha del Montsant en todos los decálogos de uvas imprescindibles para surtir la bodega del buen amante del vino tinto mediterráneo.

La primera añada fue oficialmente la 2004 y se catapultó rápidamente a lo más alto de la crítica internacional. Procede de una finca de dos hectáreas que recibe su propio nombre y está plantada únicamente con garnachas centenarias que se asientan sobre bancales calcáreos con capas arcillosas.

Como reza su nombre y el bonito dibujo que ilustra su etiqueta, siéntense, y disfruten del Espectacle.

Vista: Rojo rubí intenso con ribete violáceo.

Muy atractivo.

Nariz: Exuberante desde el primer momento. Necesita algo de tiempo para ordenarse. Fruta negra fresca, aromas florales salpicados de naranja. Ni rastro de madera.

Puro recreo.

Boca: Aterciopelado en la entrada. Frutal y equilibrado, de volumen medio, con un final suave y refrescante. Todo un gozo para los sentidos.

Comentario: Definitivamente, un vino que nos hace aplaudir y que nos incita a pedir un bis de manera perenne. Esperamos que la trayectoria de este ejemplar de garnacha perdure año tras año ya que no deja de sorprendernos la calidad absoluta del vino final. Es un vino que conjuga de manera excepcional sabor, versatilidad, elegancia, placer y generosidad, cosa que nos congratula y nos anima a creer que las variedades consideradas de menor rango en el pasado, viven un momento esplendido. Es lo que uno espera siempre cuando se sienta en primera fila y anhela disfrutar del espectáculo. Un vino para compartir, para deleitarse y para recordar siempre. Aunque joven, evolucionará bien durante la próxima década y pueden acompañarlo entonces de un clásico confit de pato a la naranja. ¡Bravo!

This lovely wine business, created under the aegis of Rene Barbier, Fernando Zamora (Clos Mogador) and Christopher Cannan (Clos Figuera), has put the Garnacha of Montsant in the who’s-who of essential grapes varieties for inclusion in the wine cellars of all those who love Mediterranean red wines. The first official vintage, the 2004, catapulted the wine to international acclaim. It comes from the two hectare estate, to which it owes its name, and which is planted with 100 year old Garnacha growing on calcareous terraces layered with clay. As the name and the pretty illustration on the label clearly invite… sit back and enjoy the “Spectacle”.

Appearance: Intense ruby red with a violet rim. Very attractive.

Nose: Exuberant from the outset. Needs some time to settle down. Fresh black fruit, floral aromas laced with orange. No trace of oak. Pure pleasure.

Palate: Velvety on entry. Fruity and balanced, medium bodied, with a gentle, refreshing finish. A feast for the senses.

Comment: This is definitely a wine that gets a big round of applause and endless cries of “encore” from us. We hope that this fine example of a Garnacha will continue to age well year after year as the perfect quality of the final wine never ceases to amaze us. The wine combines flavour, versatility, elegance, pleasure and generosity in an exceptional and very agreeable way. We can see that those grape varieties considered minor in the past are now going through exciting times. This is just what you want when you settle down in a front row seat and look forward to the “spectacle”. A wine to share, enjoy and remember forever. Although young, it will develop well over the next decade when it should pair nicely with a classic duck confit à l’orange. Bravo!

Dominio de Atauta fue fundada en 1999 en Soria, limite oriental de la D.O. Ribera del Duero, en un momento donde apenas nadie confiaba en sus viñedos. Ahí residió el éxito de la bodega que supo ver la magia de una zona que roza los mil metros de altura, con viñedos realmente viejos y apenas sin explotar, con parcelas de pie franco arcaico sanas y que llamaron la atención de su fundador Miguel Sánchez. En la primera época del proyecto destaca el trato fresco y amable de sus vinos, llenos de autenticidad y ligeramente aborgoñados, sobretodo en cuanto al cuidado de las parcelas se refiere. En 2009 hay un cambio de rumbo en la bodega al pasar a formar parte del grupo empresarial Avanselecta, pero manteniendo fielmente los principios de calidad que la han llevado a ser una bodega de ley, referente ahora en la región Castellana.

Vista: Rojo picota muy profundo y brillante.

Nariz: Superlativa, realmente fragante.

Fruta negra muy presente. Notas herbáceas que lo vuelven fresco. Maderas limpias que no molestan.

Boca: Muy redondo y frutal. Con menos peso del aparente. Sabrosos recuerdos de regaliz, especies y fruta confitada. Largo y de magnifica acidez.

Comentario: Última añada de un portentoso vino de la Ribera que nos deja una sensación agridulce con su desaparición. Sin entrar en detalles, les podemos prometer que el viñedo seguirá intacto y que posiblemente algún otro vino se beneficie de dicha alma.

Por el momento, disfruten de este maravilloso 2009 que sin duda les hará levitar. Es amable, como de costumbre, pero al mismo tiempo vigoroso, con ganas de perdurar en el tiempo. Nace de un viñedo relativamente joven de “apenas sesenta años”, que da unos rendimientos minúsculos y que ocupa una extensión de dos hectáreas y media. Ha sido criado durante 20 meses en barrica francesa y le auguramos vida durante los próximos quince años. Sigue, como no, el cultivo biodinámico, herencia de Bertrand Sourdais que abandonó el proyecto hace ya unos años. Como es un vino más gastronómico de lo habitual, les recomendamos lo prueben con diversidad de opciones sin preocuparse del acierto. Aquí una sugerencia de carácter local, Ajo carretero de cordero. ¡Sin miedo!

Dominio de Atauta was founded in 1999 in Soria, on the eastern boundary of the Ribera del Duero, at a time when hardly anyone believed in its vineyards. Herein resided the success of the bodega which was able to spot the magic of an area sitting at about a thousand metres altitude and possessing extremely old and virtually untapped vineyards. With its parcels of healthy, archaic, ungrafted vines, the area caught the eye of founder, Miguel Sanchez. In the early days, the Bodega was distinguished for its fresh, approachable, authentic and slightly Burgundy like wines, especially as far as the care of the plots was concerned. In 2009 there was a change of direction at the bodega when it became part of the Avanselecta business group, but it remained faithful to the quality principles which have made it a hallmark bodega, now a reference in the Castile region of Spain.

Appearance: Very deep, bright cherry red Nose: Superlative, really fragrant. Persistent dark fruit. Herbaceous notes that make it fresh. Clean and not unpleasant oak.

Palate: Very smooth and fruity. Less heavy than it looks. Delicious aromas of liquorice, spices and candied fruit. Long with superb acidity.

Comment: The last vintage of a prodigious Ribera wine whose disappearance leaves a bittersweet taste. Without going into detail, we can promise you that the vineyard will not be touched and some other wine may possibly benefit from its soul. For now, enjoy this wonderful 2009 which will definitely have you floating. It is as approachable as usual, yet at the same time vigorous, wanting to last over time. It comes from a relatively young vineyard of “just sixty years old” vines with tiny yields and occupying an area of 2.5 hectares. It was aged for 20 months in French oak and we predict it will age well for the next fifteen years. It respects, of course, biodynamic growing principles, the heritage of Bertrand Sourdais who left the company a few years ago. As this is a more gastronomic wine than usual, we recommend trying it with a variety of dishes without worrying overmuch about getting it perfectly right. Here’s a suggestion with a local flavour-lamb “ajo carretero’ (garlic stew). Go on, be brave!

El Tinto The Red La sorpresa en mayúsculas del 2013 nos llega de la mano de dos tótems del mundo del vino, Benjamín de Rotschild y Vega Sicilia, que iniciaron hace 12 años su mutua colaboración para crear desde cero una bodega y unos vinos nuevos en una de las regiones más clásicas del mundo: Rioja. Y precisamente en San Vicente de la Sonsierra, donde a sus lugareños se les conoce con el cariñoso sobrenombre de Macanes, nace el proyecto que ha visto la luz este año y que ya ha sobrepasado todas las expectativas, pues no deja de ser una garantía de calidad el hecho que un vino lleve en su nombre semejantes linajes de peso. De nuevo Xavier Ausás y Begoña Jovellar capitanean el ambicioso proyecto que sin duda les conducirá a un buen puerto, pues las sensaciones mostradas hasta el momento son destacables.

Enhorabuena a todos.

Vista: Color rojo rubí. Muy oscuro. Tinta ligeramente la copa Nariz: Envolvente. Muy fina y elegante.

Notas dulzonas de frutos rojos y negros.

Maderas finas que especian el final.

Boca: Tremendo. Sorprende por lo elegante y fino que se muestra dada su juventud. El tanino es delicioso. Recuerdos muy frutales, notas de torrefactos. Final muy largo y elegante. De repetición.

Comentario: Buen inicio de esta primera añada que era esperada desde hacia tiempo por el público. Y no defrauda. Mantiene bien el reto de ponerse al frente de una región aparentemente desconocida por sus colonizadores y es que lo que está claro es que “de casta le viene al galgo…”. En el comité de cata de SW nos gusta reconocer el trabajo bien hecho y hemos de admitir que Macan 2009 nos gustó mucho. Catado a ciegas, como el resto de los vinos, destacó notablemente por encima de muchos otros, consiguiendo uno de los mejores quórums entre catadores desde que existe la publicación. No nos queda mucho más que añadir, es un vino de los que no es prudente dejar pasar ni una botella y que aunque pueda dar respeto, lo interesante del mismo, es que se puede disfrutar con más frecuencia de lo que creemos. Al tiempo.

The big surprise, with a capital “S”, of 2013, is brought to us by two totems of the wine world, Benjamin de Rothschild and Vega Sicilia. 12 years ago they started working together on creating a new winery from scratch in one of the world’s most classic wine regions: Rioja. It is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra to be precise, where the locals are known by the affectionate nickname of Macanes. The fruit of this project which emerged this year has already surpassed all expectations, as a product boasting such a heavy-weight lineage in its name is always a guarantee of quality. Xavier Ausás and Begoña Jovellar again head the ambitious project that will no doubt lead to a successful conclusion as the characteristics shown so far are outstanding. Congratulations all round.

Appearance: Ruby red color. Very dark.

Stains the glass slightly.

Nose: Enveloping. Very fine and elegant.

Sweet notes of red and black fruit. Fine oak adding spice to the finish.

Palate: Terrific. Surprising for the elegance and finesse it shows, given its youth. The tannin is delicious. Very fruity aromas and roasted notes. Very long and elegant. Repetition.

Comment: Good start for this first vintage long awaited by the general public.

It does not disappoint. It rises to the challenge of being at the forefront of a region apparently unknown to its “new settlers” and it is clear that it is a “chip off the old block”. In the Selectus Wines tasting panel we like to recognize a job well done and we must admit that we really liked the Macan 2009. Tasted blind, like the others, it stood out markedly more than many of the other wines, obtaining one of the best quorums between tasters since this publication began. There is not much more to add. It would be silly to miss out on a single bottle of this wine and although it commands respect, the interesting thing about it is that you can enjoy it more often than you think.

Lejos quedan los ochenta cuando Juan Carlos López Lacalle dirigía la cooperativa de Laguardia y nadaba principalmente entre maceraciones carbónicas, tan apreciadas y tan destacadas cuando nos referimos a los famosos “cosecheros” de La Rioja. La ambición de este “rabudo” fue más allá y poco a poco fue creando su anhelado proyecto, reflejando el nombre de un encinal en su propia marca. Así nacía Artadi, un referente moderno de la nueva Rioja que ha desechado por completo las producciones masivas en pro de la calidad y el mimo que transfieren sus vinos, proyectados de manera brillante en todo el territorio nacional, y muy apreciados en los mercados internacionales. No en vano ha sido desde sus inicios bien puntuado y muy reconocido por la crítica mundial, alzándose hoy en día como uno de los bodegueros españoles con más proyección. Desde hace varios años, Juan López Lacalle ha extendido sus dominios hacia otras regiones españolas también interesantes donde encabeza proyectos jóvenes y más desenfadados que el riojano.

Vista: Rojo picota con ribete amoratado. De capa muy alta.

Nariz: De mucha intensidad, se muestra algo desordenada en inicio. Explosión de frutos rojos seguidos de maderas nobles. Recuerdos de vainilla, algo de cacao y mina de lápiz.

Boca: Enorme. Con un tanino dulzón dando paso a muchísima presencia de fruta. Ni rastro de barrica. Final muy largo y sabroso.

De nota alta.

Comentario: El vino de mezcla por antonomasia de la bodega. El tempranillo de tempranillos. Diferentes suelos, diferentes exposiciones, diferentes parcelas y diferentes edades de viñedo que comprenden períodos entre los 35 y 80 años. Es el patrón clásico de la bodega que en este 2010 se muestra enorme. Ha tenido una crianza de 15 meses en roble francés nuevo y la carga de fruta y fuerza que hay en él es enorme. Quizás uno de los más grandes que han salido de la bodega. Listo para beber como pocos, pero que bien merece dejar afinar un tiempo más en botella. Le auguramos larga vida a este clásico moderno, convertido ya, en un pequeño icono riojano. Unas deliciosas codornices a la brasa de sarmientos acompaña de manera excelente la frutosidad de este joven 2010.

The 80’s, when Juan Carlos López de Lacalle managed the Laguardia cooperative and spent his time “swimming” through a sea of maceration carbonique, are long gone.

This technique was prized and popular with the famous “cosecheros” of La Rioja at the time. But López de Lacalle had greater ambitions and he slowly set about building the business he dreamt of, adopting the name for an oak grove for his own brand.

And so Artadi was born, a modern reference for the new Rioja which has completely abandoned mass production in favour of the quality and meticulous work reflected in the wines, which enjoy an excellent image throughout Spain and are highly appreciated in international markets. From the outset, López de Lacalle was highly rated and regarded by critics worldwide, and he has today become a Spanish wine producer of great renown. He has been expanding his business for several years now, to include other interesting Spanish wine regions where he heads young, less conventional businesses than the one in Rioja.

Appearance: Cherry red with a purple rim. Very intense colour.

Nose: Very intense, somewhat disordered to begin with. Explosion of red fruit followed by noble oak aromas. Aromas of vanilla, some cocoa and pencil lead.

Palate: Very big. With sweet tannins leading to a massive hit of fruit. No trace at all of barrel ageing. Very long, luscious finish. High scorer.

Comment: The bodega’s blended wine par excellence. The tempranillo of tempranillos. Different soils, different exposures, different plots and different vineyard ages, ranging from 35 years to 80 years.

It is the Bodega’s classic cut which, in this 2010, is looking very big. It has been aged 15 months in new French oak and packs an enormous punch of fruit and power. Perhaps one of the greatest to come out of the bodega. Ready to drink unlike few others, but also well worth leaving to improve a little longer in bottle. We predict a long life for this modern classic, which has already become a bit of a Rioja icon.

Delectable quails grilled on an open fire would be an excellent match for the fruitiness of this young 2010.

El Tinto The Red Creado en 1988 bajo la extirpe del linaje Gros, este domaine es dirigido por AnneFrançoise Gros hija de Jean Gros y es totalmente independiente de los domaine que poseen sus otros dos hermanos Michel y Bernard. Principalmente, la propiedad se sitúa en el pueblo de Pommard, al sud de Beaune, capital vinícola de Borgoña pero posee viñedos en otros pueblos y bajo diferentes denominaciones de origen. Su estilo puede llegar a considerarse moderno y muy accesible en varias de sus etiquetas. Mesa de selección, despalillado total y uso de roble nuevo son prácticas que hace el domaine para ofrecer vinos muy pulidos y listos para ser disfrutados.

Vista: Rojo cereza de capa media.

Nariz: Más floral al inicio, se torna terroso lentamente y especiado al final. Cambiante.

Boca: Elegante, con presencia de fruta roja y negra. Taninos evidentes aun con recuerdos de madera por integrar. Rico y con fuerza. Para guardar un tiempo.

Comentario: Este Pinot Noir procede de un climat clasificado como Premier Cru llamado Les Pezeroles. Aquí nace este vino que desciende de una muy buena añada como es la 2009. Sin duda, los vinos del pueblo de Pommard son reconocidos por poseer cierta contundencia y fuerza que los demás vinos de la región no suelen tener. A menudo se les acusa de ser algo más rústicos y menos sutiles. La verdad es que no nos ha parecido el caso aunque si podemos destacar la juventud aun presente de la añada. Es un bonito ejemplo de borgoña más accesible que necesitará aun un tiempo en botella para poder mostrar todo su abanico de bondades pero que Anne-Françoise Gros ha sabido concebir para poder también ahora disfrutarlo de manera jovial y sin complejos. Excelente para iniciarse en vinos de la región sin frustrarse por la ligereza que muchos no soportan del Pinot Noir. Quesos más bien curados, carnes rojas a la parrilla...

Un Pommard no se arruga fácilmente.

Created in 1988, under the lineage of the Gros family, this domaine is managed

by Jean Gros’ daughter, Anne-Françoise Gros, and is completely independent of the domaines owned by her two brothers, Michel and Bernard. Most of the property is located in the village of Pommard, south of the Burgundy wine capital of Beaune, but there are also vineyards in other villages with different appellations of origin. The style of its wines could be described as modern and very accessible.

The domaine practices total de-stemming and through the use of a sorting table and new oak it creates highly polished, ready to drink wines.

Appearance: Cherry red of medium intensity.

Nose: On the floral side at first, turning slowly earthy and spicy on the finish.

Evolving.

Palate: Elegant with red and black fruit.

Pronounced tannin with oak aromas which still need to knit in. Rich and powerful. Should be laid down for a while longer.

Comment: This Pinot Noir comes from a “climat”, named Les Pezeroles, classified as a Premier Cru. This wine was born there and comes from a very good vintage, the 2009. The wines of the village of Pommard are renowned for possessing a certain power and weight which other wines from the region usually lack. They are often accused of being somewhat more rustic and less subtle. To be honest this did not seem to be the case with this wine, even though we could mention the pronounced youth of this vintage. It is a nice example of more accessible Burgundy which still needs time in bottle before it reveals a host of virtues but which Anne-Françoise Gros has put together in such a way that it can be easily enjoyed now without any problem. Excellent for novices to wines from the region without any of the frustration associated with the light character that many dislike from the Pinot Noir. Enjoy with cheeses, preferably cured, and grilled meat ... A Pommard does not back down easily!

En Selectus Wines hemos tenido la fortuna de poder catar varios ejemplares de vinos de finca de la familia Torres. A decir verdad nos han gustado siempre todos y a la hora de enfrentarlos en las catas a ciegas, suelen quedar de los mejores posicionados. Este Reserva Real no iba a ser una excepción y como no, aquí lo tenemos. Un vino que nace en los noventa como pequeño homenaje a la Casa Real Española y que poco a poco se ha convertido en un icono del panorama vinícola español, especialmente a la hora de nombrar a los embajadores tintos del Penedés, concretamente del Penedés Superior de donde nacen las uvas del Reserva Real, en la finca de Santa Margarita de Agulladolç, donde una ermita del siglo XII vigila los suelos oscuros de pizarra, salpicada de restos de suelos volcánicos que ven brotar principalmente el Cabernet Sauvignon y Merlot que se adorna finalmente con Cabernet Franc de origen granítico.

Vista: Rojo caoba de gran intensidad, con matices de marrones que denotan larga crianza. Brillante.

Nariz: Muy fino y con notas evidentes de crianza en madera. Tabaco, cuero, especies y encurtidos aparecen poco a poco. Fruta roja madura con notas dulzonas se esconden detrás.

Boca: Suave y fino. Con recuerdos de fruta madura sobrevenida de chocolate negro.

Clavo y algarroba hacia el final. Largo y con buena acidez aun presente. Sobresaliente.

Comentario: Apenas 4 hectáreas, apenas 6000 botellas y toda la paciencia del mundo para hacer un vino realmente de guarda. Sin medias tintas, el Reserva Real no es un vino para todas las ocasiones y deben ser pacientes con él. Merece la pena. El 2003 lleva con holgura el estigma de añada cálida y para nada adolece de tal mal. Está ahora en un momento muy digno, con casi una década a sus espaldas, creemos sinceramente que aun nos dará futuras alegrías por lo menos durante el próximo lustro, sino más. Es inevitable aferrarse a estos vinos con cierto cariño pero llegados el momento del juicio final, denle la oportunidad de bregar con un festín gastronómico donde asados, estofados y toda la retahíla de ingredientes mediterráneos hagan de figurantes. Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot Cabernet Franc

At Selectus Wines we have been fortunate enough to taste various of the Torres family estate wines. To be honest we have always liked them and when we include them in blind tastings, they are often among the highest scorers. This Reserva Real was not going to be any different and of course, here it is. This wine was created in the 90’s as a modest tribute to the Spanish royal family and has gradually become an iconic wine on the Spanish wine scene. It is often selected as an ambassador for Penedes red wines, specifically the Upper Penedes, where the grapes for Reserva Real come from. These grow on the Santa Margarita de Agulladolç estate, where a 12th century chapel watches over the dark slate earth with remnants of volcanic soils.

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines flourish here and are complemented with Cabernet Franc of granitic origin in the final blend.

Appearance: Very intense, red mahogany with shades of brown denoting long aging. Bright.

Nose: Very fine, pronounced notes of wood aging. Tobacco, leather, spices and pickles gradually emerge, with ripe, red fruit with sweet notes hiding just beneath.

Palate: Soft and fine, with ripe fruit aromas overlaid with dark chocolate. Cloves and carob towards the finish. Long and still showing good acidity. Outstanding.

Comment: Just 4 hectares, just 6,000 bottles, and all the patience in the world is required to make this, a real wine for laying down. Without mincing words, Reserva Real is not a wine for every occasion and you have to be patient with it. But it’s worth it. The 2003 comfortably carries the stigma of a hot year and has not suffered from it in the least. With almost a decade behind it, it is now in a very dignified phase and we trust that it will give us even greater joy over the next five years, at least, if not longer. Inevitably you regard these wines with a certain affection but, when the final judgment comes, give this wine the chance to grapple with a gastronomic banquet of roasts, stews and a whole host of Mediterranean ingredients. Uncork and enjoy it with the whole family present.

El Tinto The Red Bodega fundada a mediados de los 90 en el mágico pueblo de Porrera, Priorat, de la mano del cantautor Lluís Llach y Enric Costa, fallecido recientemente. Iniciaron primera añada en el 2000 con un trío de vinos que son bien reconocidos por el público avezado en los clásicos modernos de la región al que recientemente sumaron un cuarto vino tinto de “vila” (vino de pueblo) y un blanco excepcional y único como suelen ser los blancos del Priorat. Este 2013 han recibido la máxima distinción que un vino catalán puede optar, convirtiéndose la cuvée Vall Llach 2010 en un Vino de Finca Calificada. Actualmente, sus vinos forman parte del estandarte cualitativo de los vinos más apreciados del país y que han situado a la D.O. en una de las más importantes regiones vinícolas del mundo. La dirección enológica corre a cuenta del conocido Sal·lustià Álvarez.

Vista: Rojo picota oscuro. Capa muy alta.

Denso en copa.

Nariz: Dulzona, muy expresiva. Recuerdos de fruta negra muy evidentes seguidos de notas más bien tostadas. Chocolate con leche, canela, caramelo quemado.

Boca: Voluminoso al entrar, ciertamente sabroso y de agradable frutosidad. Tanino algo alborotado, necesita pulirse un poco más en botella. Larguísimo.

Comentario: Apenas 5800 botellas de este tremendo vino tinto que se ha caracterizado siempre por su fuerza y contundencia mucho más evidente que en otros vinos de su rango en el Priorat. Aunque la añada 2009 fue considera muy buena y realmente regular, este 2009 nos ha parecido más maduro de lo habitual. Es sabroso y robusto, bastante más concentrado que otros años y que quizás debiera pulirse un poco más en botella ya que tanto fulgor nos abruma ligeramente. Con una base más que notable de Carinyena, este vino ha sido criado durante 16 meses en roble francés y procede de una selección cuidada de viñas viejas con un pequeño aporte de las viñas más jóvenes que rematan el coupage de este vino racial. No es fácil decantarse por un maridaje concreto pero sin duda deberán ser preparaciones contundentes y que no se arruguen ante tal espécimen rampante.

This bodega was founded in the mid-90’s in the magical town of Porrera, Priorat, by singer Lluís Llach and Enric Costa, who passed away recently. They released their first vintage in 2000 with a trio of wines, well recognized by wine enthusiasts familiar with this region’s modern classics. To these they recently added a fourth, “vila” (village wine) red wine and a white wine which is totally unique, as Priorat whites often are. The 2013 has gained the highest distinction awarded to a Catalan wine, making cuvée Vall Llach 2010, a Vino de Finca Calificada (Qualified Estate Wine).

Currently, their wines are among the most well regarded wines from Spain in terms of quality and have positioned the D.O. As one of the most significant wine regions in the world. The winemaking is headed by the well-known figure of Sal·lustià Alvarez.

Appearance: Dark cherry red. Very intense colour. Dense in the glass.

Nose: Sweetish, very expressive. Very pronounced black fruit aromas followed by rather toasted notes. Milk chocolate, cinnamon, burnt caramel.

Palate: Full bodied on entry, extremely tasty with a pleasant fruity character.

Rather boisterous tannin, needs a little more polishing in the bottle. Extremely long.

Comment: There are only 5,800 bottles available of this superb red wine which always shows a strong, forceful character which is much more apparent than in other Priorat wines of its rank. Although the 2009 vintage was considered very good and very consistent, this 2009 appeared to us to be more mature than usual. It is robust and full of flavour, much more concentrated than in other years, and should perhaps spend some more time polishing in the bottle because this much intensity is slightly overwhelming. With a very pronounced Carinyena base, this wine has been aged for 16 months in French oak and comes from a careful selection of old vines along with a few younger vines to round off this thoroughbred wine. It is not easy to pick out a specific food match but it should definitely be a hearty dish and one able to stand up to this rampant specimen.

Esplendido ejemplo de bodega prioratina nacida en 1998 que en poco tiempo se ha hecho un nombre en el mercado y que ha cosechado buenas críticas a nivel internacional desde su primera aparición en la cosecha 2002. De la mano del matrimonio Castillo-Bairaguet, son por definición una bodega familiar que cuentan con apenas 10 hectáreas de viñedo situado en Porrera. Aquí, tanto Paco Castillo como su hija Ingrid, son los responsables enológicos del proyecto que gratamente nos sorprende año tras año, siendo siempre fiel al poder de los suelos de licorella (pizarra parda) que concentran el maravilloso fruto que nos brinda el Priorat.

Vista: Amarillo dorado, limpio y brillante con cierta untuosidad en copa.

Nariz: Muy compleja y cambiante.

Realmente fragante pasados unos minutos en copa. Recuerdos de fruta blanca en inicio seguidos de fruto seco sin tostar. Algo de monte bajo y recuerdos amielados hacia el final.

Boca: Amplio al entrar, con sensaciones muy sabrosas. Buena acidez conducida hasta el final pese a su untuosidad. Recuerdos otra vez frutales con notas de lichi, melón, manzana ligeramente cocida. Algún recuerdo tostado que no molesta y lo vuelve sabroso.

Comentario: Un ejemplar de raza. Un blanco que enamora desde el primer sorbo y que entra de lleno en el selecto grupo de los blancos singulares nacionales, tan escasos y tan buscados, con la dificultad añadida que se elabora en una tierra más reconocida por sus tintos que por sus blancos. Combo añadido para los que quieran surtirse de varias botellas es que tan solo elaboran de 300 a 500 ejemplares por año y realmente vuelan cuando salen al mercado. Un blanco con crianza que se disfruta ahora y que bien merece ser guardado pacientemente un par de años para ver su bonita evolución. El ejemplo perfecto para juntarse en una mesa de invierno y dejarse seducir por la contundencia de su volumen, su fruta y sus rasgos maduros que bien podrían acompañar una pescado de rio. Trucha rellena con pasas y piñones, acompañada de un ligero chutney de mango puede ser una buena opción.

Garnacha blanca – Macabeo Pedro Ximénez – Picapoll – Riesling

This is a splendid example of a Priorat bodega, created in 1998, which quickly made a name for itself in the market and which has enjoyed international critical acclaim since its first release with the 2002 harvest. Run by the Castillo-Bairaguet husband and wife team, it is by definition a family winery which has only 10 hectares of vineyards located in Porrera.

Here both Paco Castillo and his daughter, Ingrid, handle the winemaking side of the business. Their wine pleasantly surprises us every year, faithfully reflecting the power of the Licorella (brown slate) soils which concentrate the wonderful fruit that Priorat gives us.

Appearance: Golden yellow, clean and bright with a certain unctuosity in the glass.

Nose: Very complex and evolving. Really fragrant after a few minutes in the glass.

Aromas of white fruit at the beginning followed by unroasted nuts. Some scrub and honey-like aromas towards the finish.

Palate: Full on entry, with luscious taste sensations. Good acidity carrying through to the finish despite the unctuosity. The fruit aromas come through again with notes of lychee, melon and slightly cooked apple. Some not unpleasant hints of toast make the wine delectable.

Comment: An example of fine breeding. A white that charms from the first sip and that sits squarely within a select group of unique, rare and sought after Spanish whites, with the added difficulty of it coming from a region better known for its red wines than its whites. Another snag for those wanting to stock up on a few bottles is that they only make 300 to 500 bottles per year and these are quickly snapped up when released on the market.

A crianza white which can be enjoyed now but deserves to be patiently laid down for a couple of years to see its beautiful evolution. This is the perfect wine for enjoying with winter meals, to marvel at the power of its body, fruit and mature characteristics which would make it a good match for freshwater fish. Trout stuffed with raisins and pine nuts, served with a light mango chutney, could be a smart choice.

El Blanco TheWhite En el valle orensano de Bibei, el pequeño de los Palacios-Remondo, inició su aventura vinícola hace apenas nueve años con un propósito bien notable; hacer el mejor vino blanco del país. En tan poco tiempo, Rafael Palacios, con tan solo 22 hectáreas que conforman sus viñedos parcelarios, los blancos que crían junto a la joven enóloga Cecilia Fernández han recibido notables críticas y elogios año tras año situándose entre los vinos blancos más notables de la última década.

Vista: Amarillo pálido brillante.

Presencia de lágrima.

Nariz: En fase de integración, aun destaca demasiado el paso por barrica en el inicio.

Poco a poco aparecen recuerdos más frutales como la piel de pomelo, flor blanca, albaricoque fresco. Muy agradable.

Boca: Con volumen y untuosa, muy sabrosa, con notas especiadas de su evidente crianza.

Fresco y con gran profundidad de matices.

Recuerdos de fruta fresca. Final largo, jugoso y mineral. Para guardar.

Comentario: Vino blanco que nace de una minúscula parcela de tan solo 0’47 hectáreas o lo que es lo mismo, en esta primera añada que ve la luz 2680 botellas. Pueden ir imaginando que se trata de un buen candidato para estar en Selectus Wines y no solo por su exclusividad, también por su notable calidad. El vino fue fermentado en barricas grandes de 500 litros y posteriormente realizó una crianza de ocho meses que le dotaron de buena robustez, algo abrumadora en un principio pero que estamos seguros que irá disipándose con el paso de los meses y es que sin duda es un pura sangre de Godello por domar que nos muestra el potencial de su uva autóctona y al que le vislumbramos una magnifica riqueza de sabor en los próximos cinco años como mínimo. Buen postulante a sorprender en las navidades… si encuentran algún ejemplar y marídenlo con unos rollitos de lomo de ternera blanca con grelos escaldados y compota de manzana.

In the Ourense valley of Bibei, the youngest Palacios-Remondo embarked on his wine adventure just nine years ago with a noble purpose - to make the best white wine in Spain. With only 22 hectares of vineyards, the white wines that Rafael Palacios produces with young oenologist, Cecilia Fernandez, have received accolades and outstanding reviews year after year, placing them among the most remarkable white wines of the last decade.

Appearance: Bright pale yellow.

Visible tears.

Nose: At the knitting-in phase, its barrelageing is still too pronounced to begin with. Fruitier aromas, such as grapefruit skins, white flowers and fresh apricots, gradually emerge. Very pleasant.

Palate: Shows body and unctuosity, delicious flavours, with spicy notes from its evident ageing. Fresh with deep nuances.

Fresh fruit aromas. Long, juicy and mineral finish. For laying down.

Comment: This white wine comes from a tiny plot of only 0.47 hectares which amounts to 2,680 bottles of this first vintage. As you can imagine, this is a good candidate for inclusion in Selectus Wines not just for its exclusivity, but also for its remarkable quality. The wine was fermented in large 500 litre barrels and then underwent eight months of ageing making it very robust, somewhat overpowering at first, but we are sure this will dissipate with the passing months. It is definitely a Godello thoroughbred which needs taming. It shows us the potential of this native grape variety and gives us a glimpse of the magnificent richness of flavour which should develop in the next five years (at least). A good candidate to surprise everyone at Christmas ... if you can get hold of a bottle and pair it with white veal with blanched turnip tops and apple sauce.

Interesante proyecto iniciado a mediados de la pasada década de la mano del sudafricano Eben Sadie y el alemán Dominik A. Huber que representan, posiblemente, la mejor versión de lo que se ha denominado la segunda revolución del Priorat. La bodega está situada en el pueblo de Torroja del Priorat y su estilo es claramente de inspiración borgoñona. Elaboran cinco vinos tintos y dos excelentes vinos blancos ambos muy difíciles de conseguir. Su filosofía es poco intervencionista e intentan que los vinos sean realmente un fiel reflejo del suelo y la variedad que los configuran.

Vista: Amarillo pajizo, ligeramente turbio debido a su falta de filtración. Presencia de lágrima.

Nariz: Sobresale inicialmente algo de barrica. Desaparece y deja paso a la fruta de hueso blanca, notas de flor, algo de manzanilla y rasgos de tiza.

Boca: Entrada con fuerza, buena acidez y recreación de la fruta otra vez muy presente, esta vez acompañada de sabores minerales que recuerdan a las piedras. Buen final, ligeramente amargo y sabroso.

Comentario: Uno de los vinos blancos catalanes más ilusionantes del último se conoce hasta la fecha. Un buen ejemplo del buen hacer del dueto foráneo que encabeza esta bodega y que año tras año gana adeptos dentro y fuera de nuestro país. Pedra de Guix tiene alma de Garnacha Blanca pero se conjuga de manera tremenda con Pedro Ximenez y algo de Macabeu. Es un blanco puro, hecho tal cual a la antigua usanza, con pisado de pie incluido. Posteriormente es criado en barrica usada de 500 litros durante casi dos años y finalmente es embotellado sin filtrar. Un enorme ejemplo de “Vi de Costers” (o viñedo en pendiente si lo prefieren) que nace a una altura superior a los 500 metros y que está totalmente a las antípodas de los blancos alcohólicos, pesados y con poca acidez. Es una delicia contar con esta tercera añada que derrocha, ahora sí, mineralidad a raudales y que bien merece seguir su evolución en botella si tenemos paciencia al menos los próximos tres años.

Versátil como pocos, puede acompañar sin problemas carnes y pescados pero nosotros nos decantamos por lomitos de sardina marinada en bergamota con hinojo marino.

Garnacha blanca – Pedro Ximénez

This interesting business was set up in the middle of the last decade by South African, Eben Sadie and German, Dominik A. Huber, who are possibly the best representatives of what has been termed Priorat’s “second revolution”. The bodega is located in the village of Torroja del Priorat and its style is distinctly Burgundy-inspired. They produce five red wines and two excellent whites, all very difficult to get hold of. Their philosophy is one of minimum intervention and they try to fully bring out the soil and the grape varieties in each of their wines.

Appearance: Straw yellow, slightly cloudy due to lack of filtration. Visible tears.

Nose: Some barrel ageing aromas stand out at first. These disappear and give way to white stoned fruit, notes of flowers, a hint of chamomile and traces of chalk.

Palate: Powerful on entry, good acidity with the reappearance of the predominantly fruity aromas, this time accompanied by mineral flavours reminiscent of the stony soil. Good finish, slightly bitter but delicious.

Comment: One of the most exciting Catalan white wines of the last five years.

The 2010 is a Priorat white with fresher and more finely honed ageing than seen to date.

A fine illustration of the know-how of the foreign duo who head this winery and who continue to gain fans inside and outside Spain, year after year. Pedra de Guix has a Garnacha Blanca soul but it marries superbly well with Pedro Ximenez and some Macabeo. It is a pure white, produced in a traditional manner, even treading the grapes by foot. It is then aged in used 500 litre barrels for almost two years and finally goes into bottle unfiltered. A great example of a “Vi de Costers” (sloping vineyard) which grows at an altitude of over 500 metres and is as far removed as you can get from a heavy, flabby, alcoholic white. It is a delight to try this third vintage with spade-loads of minerality and whose evolution in bottle would be worth following if you have the patience to wait for at least another three years. Of rare versatility, it can easily accompany meat or fish but we would go for filets of sardines marinated in bergamot with sea fennel.

El Rosado The Rosé Château d’Esclans es una espléndida propiedad de 700 acres situada en la comuna de La Motte, al norte de St.Tropez en la Provenza francesa.

Sacha Lichine, propietario del dominio, es el culpable de la revolución que han sufrido los vinos rosados de la región de la Provenza en la última década, situándolos al nivel de los grandes vinos blancos y tintos así como en primera página de las revistas especializadas más importantes del panorama mundial.

Este visionario emprendedor en compañia de Patrick Leon, ex enólogo de Château Mouton Rothschild, ha convertido el lugar en una viña boutique (como le gusta decir a él) dedicada exclusivamente a la producción de sus fantásticos vinos rosados.

La niña de sus ojos se llama Garrus, y está considerado el vino rosado más exclusivo y caro del mundo.

Vista: Color salmón pálido con muy poca extracción de color. Límpido y brillante.

Nariz: Aromas muy sutiles a frutos rojos silvestres, melocotón, elegantes notas florales y anisadas. Todo el conjunto envuelto sobre un fondo de ahumados delicados.

Boca: En boca es tremendamente elegante y delicado, con gusto a frambuesas frescas y cítricos. Final largo y rico en matices con leves notas de crianza, ahumados y frutos secos.

Comentario: Su límitada producción a 6 barricas por año, hacen de este vino uno de los más codiciados. Elaborado a partir de cepas de 80 años de garnacha y vermentino, utiliza las técnicas de vinificación de los grandes borgoñas blancos así como barricas nuevas de roble francés de 500 litros para su crianza, lo que le confiere al vino un estilo absolutamente único, singular y especialmente expresivo.

Si aún son de los que piensan si el rosado puede llegar a ser un gran vino, les aseguro que después que lo prueben no les quedará la menor duda.

Si tienen la oportunidad de acompañarlo con un tataki de atún con gazpacho de fresa el placer va a ser aún mayor.

Château d’Esclans is a splendid 700 acre property located in the La Motte area, north of St. Tropez in French Provence.

The domaine’s owner, Sacha Lichine, is the man behind the rosé revolution which has taken place in Provence over the last decade. He has placed his provençal rosés at the same quality level as the great red and white wines, as well as on the cover pages of the world’s most important food and wine publications. This visionary entrepreneur, working in tandem with Patrick Leon, Château Mouton Rothschild’s former winemaker, has turned Château Esclans into a boutique winery (as he likes to call it), dedicated exclusively to the production of his fantastic rosé wines.

The apple of his eye is called Garrus and it is considered the most exclusive and expensive rosé wine in the world.

Appearance: Pale salmon hue with very little colour extraction. Clear and bright.

Nose: Very subtle aromas of wild berries, peaches, elegant floral and aniseed notes.

All wrapped up nicely against a delicate, smoky backdrop.

Palate: The wine is extremely elegant and delicate, with a taste of fresh raspberries and citrus fruits. Long finish, full of nuances with light notes from ageing, smoky and dried nut aromas.

Comment: With its miniscule production of 6 barrels per year, this wine is one of the most coveted in the world. 80 year old Grenache and Vermentino vines, the finest white Burgundy-style vinification techniques and ageing in new French 500 litre oak barrels, give the wine an absolutely unique, remarkable and particularly expressive style.

If you are among those who still wonder whether a rosé wine can ever really be great, I promise you that after you try it, you will be left in no doubt.

If you can pair it with some tuna tataki with a strawberry gazpacho, the pleasure will be all the greater.

Una de las bodegas más antiguas de Champagne que inicia su actual andadura en 1910. Situada en Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, ha hecho gala siempre de considerarse más bien una histórica para los connosseiurs que una gran maison global. Por ende, no es aun reconocida por el gran público que sí retiene otras marcas de mayor volumen pero no forzosamente de mejor calidad. Apenas cuentan con poco más de 17 hectáreas de viñedo en propiedad, en su mayoría Pinot Noir, eso sí, repartidos en los mejores pagos de la región.

Un detalle que la hace realmente especial es que son el único propietario del prestigioso viñedo Clos des Goisses, que fue adquirido en su totalidad en 1935. Actualmente, la dirección de la bodega sigue siendo familiar.

Vista: Precioso color dorado. Muy limpio.

Burbuja pequeña abundante.

Nariz: Nariz de gran complejidad con aromas hipnotizantes de fruta fresca, avellanas tostadas, cáscara de naranja, bollería fina y pan grillé.

Boca: Tremendamente elegante y de buena estructura, con una sapidez mineral que le aporta la caliza que sirve de apoyo a la carga frutal e intensidad del vino. Muy bien delineado y con una energía extraordinaria.

Comentario: Cuando nombramos a Clos des Goisses hablamos de un viñedo único y excepcional de 5,5 hectáreas, situado en extrema pendiente con casi el 45% de inclinación y con un suelo muy poco profundo de pura ‘craie’, orientado plenamente al sur; pero también hacemos referencia seguramente al mejor Premier Cru de toda la champagne, ya que por situación geográfica, el pueblo en el que se encuentra Mareuilsur-Äy, lamentablemente nunca podrá ser considerado como un Grand Cru aunque sí en esencia. Clos des Goisses define y reúne todos los parámetros que tiene que poseer un champagne single vineyard: robustez, elegancia, complejidad, mineralidad y gran capacidad de envejecimiento. Lo dicho, un fuera de serie! Resulta sublime acompañado de una lubina salvaje asada con setas confitadas y salsa de ostras.

This is one of the oldest houses in Champagne which started on its current journey in 1910. Located in Mareuilsur-Ay, it has always positioned itself as a traditional Champagne house for connoisseurs rather than a big, international Champagne house. As a consequence, it is not even recognized by the general public who do however know its other higher volume, but not necessarily higher quality, brands. They only have a little over 17 hectares of owned vineyards, mostly growing Pinot Noir, but spread out in the region’s best vineyards. What truly sets them apart, however, is the fact that they are the sole proprietors of the prestigious Clos des Goisses vineyard, which was acquired in its entirety in 1935. The company is still family owned today.

Appearance: Beautiful golden hue. Very clean. Abundance of small beads.

Nose: Very complex with mesmerizing aromas of fresh fruit, roasted hazelnuts, orange peel, fine pastries and toast.

Palate: Tremendously elegant and well structured, with a tasty mineral character from the limestone that serves as support to the Champagne’s fruit and intensity.

Very well delineated with extraordinary vigour.

Comment: When we cite Clos des Goisses we are talking about a unique, exceptional vineyard of 5.5 hectares, located on a very steep slope, virtually at a 45% gradient, and very shallow, pure craie soil, exposed fully south. We are also referring to what is surely the best Premier Cru Champagne of all because unfortunately, due to its geographical location, the village of Mareuil-sur-Ay, it can never be considered a Grand Cru, although it is in essence. Clos des Goisses defines and possesses all the attributes of a single vineyard Champagne: robustness, elegance, complexity, minerality and great ageing potential. In other words, it is one of a kind! It is absolutely sublime when paired with roast wild sea bass with confit mushrooms and an oyster sauce.

El Champagne The Champagne Fuere por la audacia excepcional que se le atribuye o por una gran capacidad visionaria o incluso por los azares de la vida, es inevitable citar al más famoso monje benedictino jamás conocido en el mundo del vino Pierre Pérignon, a la hora de aludir en cualquier coloquio amateur vinícola, las bondades que la segunda fermentación ha aportado a los vinos tranquilos de la Champagne desde el siglo XVII y es que este joven religioso fue el descubridor de dicha fermentación, o lo que es lo mismo, del método champenoise.

En honor a su figura, desde 1921 la Maison Moët & Chandon elabora este magnífica cuvée, asi como los lanzamientos Oenothèque, que responden a un segundo tiraje de limitadísimas botellas que han envejecido entre 15 y 20 años en la bodega.

Vista: Amarillo dorado con destellos verdosos. Burbuja muy fina. Bonita y muy blanca coronación de espuma fina.

Nariz: Fresca y radiante. Con amplitud y redundancia en aromas yodados, recuerdos de caramelo de limón, puntas de eucalipto y notas ligeramente almendradas. Una delicia.

Boca: Con fuerza pero elegante. Todo sabor.

Insistente en fruta amarilla, dando paso a notas de pastelería muy frescas. Largo y fino, con enorme recorrido aun. De cátedra.

Comentario: Un excelente icono del lujo y de la calidad más refinada que una maison, para nada pequeña, puede llegar a producir.

Una botella que rezuma personalidad a raudales y que viste una elegante etiqueta negra clásica que la eleva de inmediato al Olimpo de los grandes champagnes contemporáneos. En su interior, magia del 96. Y es que la añada del 96, retumba aun en las paredes de las botellas que hay por descorchar y lo hará con fuerza durante años, quizás décadas, pues tiene aún un impulso que bien merece ser pulido aun un tiempo más.

Para los impacientes, afilen sus dientes ante la potencia que muestra este champagne aun muy opulento y grandilocuente. No apto para no avezados en champagnes notorios que muerden tras cada sorbo. Difícil de llevar a una mesa en especial, resérvenlo para ese momento y solo ese.

Whether it was because of his bold character or his great vision, or whether it was simply due to the vicissitudes of life, when you find yourself speaking to wine lovers about the benefits which secondary fermentation has brought the still wines of Champagne since the 17th century, you inevitably have to talk about Father Perignon, the most famous Benedictine monk the wine world has ever known. It was he who, as a young priest, discovered secondary fermentation in bottle, i.e. la méthode champenoise. In honour of this great figure, the Maison Moët & Chandon has produced the superb Dom Perignon cuvée since 1921, later joined by the Oenothèque Champagnes. The Oenothèque Champagnes are from a second, very limited run of bottles which have been cellar-aged for between 15 and 20 years.

Appearance: Golden yellow with greenish hues. Very fine bead. Nice, very white crown of fine foam.

Nose: Fresh and radiant. Shows fullness and an abundance of iodinated aromas, lemon candy, touches of eucalyptus and hints of almonds. A delight.

Palate: Powerful yet elegant. Bursting with flavour. Persistent yellow fruit, giving way to notes of very fresh pastries. Long and fine, still shows plenty of life. Textbook example.

Comment: This is a superb symbol of luxury and finest quality, illustrating what a Champagne house, and not a small one at that, is capable of producing.

The bottle simply exudes personality, clad in an elegant classic black label which immediately raises it to the Olympus of great contemporary Champagnes. Inside lies the magic of the ‘96 vintage. The ‘96 still resounds on the walls of bottles as yet uncorked and will do so for years, or even decades, to come, because it still has an impetus that deserves to run its course for a while longer. The impatient among you should steel yourselves for the power displayed by this still very opulent and grandiose champagne. Not for those unaccustomed to eminent champagnes with a bite in very sip. It is hard to say when or where it should be enjoyed. Save it for that one perfect occasion.

Boca: Grandioso, con un gran esqueleto compensado por una buena acidez.

Carbónico fino muy bien integrado. Sabores a frutos secos y frutas maduras. Muy largo en el paladar.

Comentario: Este champagne millésime 2.003 es uno de los vinos más personales y atrevidos de Selosse, y proviene de dos parcelas de viñas viejas Les Chantereines y Les Maladries del Grand Cru de Avize. Se muestra joven aún, y necesita tiempo de botella para desarrollar todo el inmenso potencial que lleva dentro. De estilo vinoso y oxidativo, no tiene paralelismo con ningún otro champagne en el mundo. Es uno de los champagnes más radicales y buscados por los aficionados de todo el planeta. Disfrútenlo sencillamente con un delicioso jamón Ibérico de Guijuelo. ¡A gozar!

Drum roll please for this boutique Champagne house, the author of an uninhibited Champagne which has attained cult status mostly in the last decade, little by little. Located on the slopes of the village of Avize, its small production is a far cry from the glamorous, glitzy Champagnes which abound in the region. Anselme Selosse is considered a total outsider by many, but for others he is simply the creator of distinctive, luscious Champagnes.

Behold the magic of his products which are critically acclaimed, in increasing demand from less conformist drinkers and jealously guarded in the wine cellars of the world’s best restaurants. His secret?

Produce full-bodied Champagnes with an oxidative character, respecting biodynamic principles which let the earth speak, and which are simply impossible to forget once you have tasted them. This is no small accomplishment and a growing number of producers in the region are following suit.

Welcome, then, to the Selosse method.

Appearance: Deep golden hue. Clean and bright. Tiny beads Nose: Enormous intensity. Typical oxidative aromas, the unmistakable hallmark of the house, wilted flowers combined with notes of baked apple and dried nuts.

Saline and mineral backdrop.

Palate: Grandiose, with a big frame offset by good acidity. Fine, well integrated CO2. Dried nut and ripe fruit flavours.

Very long on the palate.

Comment: This 2003 vintage champagne is one of Selosse’s most personal and boldest Champagnes and comes from two parcels of old vines, Les Chantereines and Les Maladries, in the Avize Grand Cru area.

It is still young and needs time in bottle to realize the immense potential within.

Espumosos Sparkling wines Franciacorta se ubica en el corazón de Lombardía, y se extiende entre Brescia y el lago de Iseo. Define tres conceptos: un vino, un método de elaboración (que es el tradicional o clásico) y el territorio donde se elaboran los vinos espumosos de mayor calidad de toda Italia.

La familia Ricci Curbastro tiene más de cien años de historia, sus primeras etiquetas de vino espumoso datan de 1.885. El actual propietario Riccardo Ricci Curbastro, es uno de los mayores productores y también uno de los empresarios con mayor visión de futuro que en su día decidieron invertir en la producción de vino espumoso en Franciacorta.

Su bodega se localiza en una finca de 27 hectáreas de viñedo en Villa Evemila, la casa familiar donde reside. Sus vinos destacan por su gran refinamiento, elegancia y equilibrio.

Vista: Precioso color rosa cobrizo. Presencia de burbuja fina abundante.

Nariz: Enamoradiza, con notas florales a pétalos de rosa, frutos rojos frescos y hierbas del monte al inicio, dando paso a aromas terrosos y especiados.

Boca: Muy sabrosa, con buena carga frutal reproduciendo el paisaje aromático antes descrito. A destacar una fina frescura que invita a seguir bebiendo. Largo en su postgusto.

Comentario: Este espumoso rosado es cautivador, nada caro comparado con alguno de sus competidores. Posee una deliciosa textura cremosa y una burbuja fina y chispeante.

Como de si un perfume se tratara su nariz nos transporta a una cesta de flores blancas y azules, de frutas frescas, grosellas y fresas.

Cada sorbo da testimonio del enorme potencial del suelo y clima de la comarca, suelos de grava profundos y pobres en materia orgánica, y de buena acidez gracias a la influencia de los Alpes que protege los viñedos del frío que circula por el lago de Iseo.

Sugerido con un coulant de queso camembert con mermelada de arándanos y helado de violeta.

Nose: Enchanting, starting out with floral notes of rose petals, fresh red fruits and mountain herbs before giving way to earthy and spicy aromas.

Palate: Very tasty, with good fruit reproducing the aromatic landscape described above. Remarkably fine freshness that invites you to carry on drinking it.

Lingering aftertaste.

Comment: This sparkling rosé is captivating and not expensive compared to some of its rivals. It has a delightful creamy texture and fine, lively bubbles. Like a perfume on the nose, it offers up a basket of white and blue flowers, fresh fruit, currants and strawberries.

Each sip testifies to the immense potential of the region’s climate and soils. These are deep gravel soils, poor in organic matter, with good acidity thanks to the influence of the Alps which protect the vineyards from the cold coming off Lake Iseo.

We would suggest you enjoy it with an oven-baked Camembert served with blueberry jam and violet ice cream.

Comentario: Un oloroso histórico del imaginario colectivo que empezó a elaborarse en 1864 y que aúna en su interior siempre más de treinta años de envejecimiento en botas viejas de Jerez. Tiempo, paciencia y sabiduría son los ingredientes básicos para elaborar siempre este tipo de vinos considerados joyas vinícolas a preservar y respetar. No son vinos viejos como muchos erróneamente califican sino que son vinos sabios, vinos mágicos y con historia en cierto riesgo de extinción por el esfuerzo de tesón que nos exigen ante su despliegue y lo poco dados hoy en día a la escucha de nuestro interlocutor. Despacio, sin prisas y escudriñando poco a poco cada sorbo, podremos comprender lo deliciosos que pueden a llegar a ser estos olorosos dulces viejísimos y particularmente este, con un nombre premonitorio, nos acaricia el paladar, nos enriquece al disfrutarlo y nos advierte, de pronto, que no hay mejor banda sonora en una mesa de quesos que un vino de jerez como este sonando de fondo. Para redescubrir un gran pedazo de historia, para ilustrarse.

Appearance: Nice mahogany, slightly amber, hue.

Nose: A whole raft of flavours that run from dried nuts to more pronounced, sweetish toasted aromas such as fine oak, vanilla, toffee and brioche. Endless pleasure.

Palate: Drier than expected, it is potent, lasting a long time on the palate with flavours reminiscent of dried oranges, raisins, chocolate liqueurs and toasted almonds. A host of sensations.

Comment: A traditional oloroso from the collective imagination of generations since 1864, which is always made from sherry which has undergone over thirty years of aging in old Jerez butts. Time, patience and wisdom are the basic ingredients used to create this type of sherry considered a jewel worth preserving and upholding. These sherries are not “old” wines, as many erroneously believe, but “wise” and magical wines, with a great history. Slowly, unhurriedly and analyzing every sip, we can comprehend just how delicious these very sweet old olorosos can be, and particularly this one with its portending name, which caresses the palate, making us richer as we enjoy it. It tells us that there would be no better soundtrack to a selection of cheese than a good sherry.

Los Clásicos – The Classics

Una de las bodegas históricas del país situada en Cenicero, la Rioja Alta y que echa a andar de manera oficial en 1890 de la mano de la familia Artacho y Don Rafael Carreras. Importante pedazo de la historia vinícola española, que alberga en su interior más de 4 millones de botellas, que nacieron de sus más de 300 hectáreas de viñedo y que bien merecen el viaje hasta su localidad para entender como estos más de cien años han dibujado el panorama vitivinícola nacional y en especial, de la Denominación de Origen Rioja.

Vista: Amarillo paja ligeramente dorado.

Nariz: Dulzona, muy frutal y amielada.

Recuerdos a flor de almendro, hueso de melocotón. Realmente fina y agradable.

Boca: Licorosa. Con evidente sensación dulce pero sin ser pesada. Muy frutal como en nariz y con excelente recorrido que nos hace salivar.

Comentario: Vino blanco semidulce con sobre-maduración y algún rescoldo de podredumbre noble que nos hace mirar ligeramente hacia atrás en el tiempo. Quizás sorprendan estos vinos aquí y ahora y hasta nos parezcan vinos divergidos en el tiempo pero hasta hace poco más de cuatro décadas, eran los vinos más bebidos por el consumidor nacional que un buen día hizo click y junto a las bondades de la enología más puntera, sucumbió a los vinos pálidos y secos que antes jamás había bebido. ¿A qué se debía entonces a que en Rioja se hicieran estos especímenes ahora en extinción? Bien habría que indicar que el modelo a seguir riojano, hace más de un siglo, se situó siempre bien cercano al bordelés. Ahora parece que renace cierta melancolía hacia estos productos que alguna bodega, como el caso que nos ocupa, jamás ha dejado de producir, eso sí, de manera más cariñosa que rentable.

Tiremos de cocina clásica y sintámonos como en los años 30, una deliciosa ballotine de faisán servida como entrante puede ser amena si lo acompañamos de este vino riojano singular.

One of the country’s old traditional wineries located in Cenicero, Rioja Alta, which was officially founded in 1890 by the Artacho family and Don Rafael Carreras.

This important piece of Spanish wine history houses over 4 million bottles, produced in its 300 hectares of vineyards. It is well worth a trip to the area to understand how the Spanish wine scene, and the Rioja Designation of Origin in particular, have been shaped over the last century.

Appearance: Slightly golden straw yellow.

Nose: Sweetish, fruity and honeyed.

Aromas of almond blossom and peach stones. Really fine and pleasant.

Palate: Liquorice, with a pronounced sensation of sweetness which isn’t heavy.

Like on the nose, it is very fruity. Excellent from start to finish, mouthwatering.

Comment: Semi-sweet white wine from over-ripened grapes and some embers of noble rot that takes us back a few years.

It is perhaps surprising to come across these wines today and they could even appear somewhat lost in time, but until just over four decades ago, this was the style of wine which Spanish drinkers enjoyed.

Then, one fine day and almost overnight, they succumbed to the pale, dry wines, the result of new, cutting-edge winemaking, which they had never drunk before. So why have they made these specimens now close to extinction in Rioja? Well, we should point out that in Rioja, over a century ago, the model to follow was close to the Bordeaux model. Now it seems that there has been some resurgence in nostalgia for these products which certain bodegas, such as the one we are discussing here, have never stopped producing, more out of love than money. Let’s draw from classic cuisine and pretend we are back in the 30’s - a delectable pheasant ballotine, as a starter, could be agreeable if paired with this unique Rioja wine.

Perteneciente al grupo empresarial Pons, esta bodega catalana se sitúa en la denominación de origen Costers del Segre, al sur de la comarca leridana de Les Garrigues, muy conocida y apreciada por la magnífica producción de aceite de oliva. La bodega es un despliegue arquitectónico y tecnológico sin parangón en la zona y sus vinos han proyectado al mundo una región que ha pasado desapercibida en más de una ocasión por el gran público. De corte moderno, con una puesta en escena muy cuidada, sus planteamientos se alejan por completo de una simple mirada frívola puramente estética, haciendo hincapié en una premisa constante que consiste en hacer buenos vinos con grandes dosis de exigencia y constancia.

Vista: Rojo cereza picota muy brillante.

Nariz: Agradable. Recuerdos de fruta roja fresca con notas más bien apimientadas.

Sin rastros evidentes de madera, si ofrece recuerdos ligeramente achocolatados.

Boca: Con cierto volumen, es redondo y maduro. Sabores muy ligados a frutos rojos con evidentes notas especiadas. Final medio.

Comentario: Magnifica rareza que pertenece a la llamada serie 800 que nos indica claramente el número total de botellas que salen al mercado año tras año de este vino.

Los dos últimos dígitos indican el año de producción. Como era de esperar, dichas golosinas debieran aparecer en Selectus Wines y cómo no, este magnífico espécimen de vino singular era una pieza de caza a perseguir.

El 810 está compuesto en su totalidad de uva Marselan, tan extraña en nuestro país como bien considerada en sus diferentes apariciones y que muy bien han hecho ya muchos elaboradores de nuestro país echándole el ojo desde los años 90, vistos los buenos resultados obtenidos por el territorio mediterráneo. Es el 810 un vino robusto, de grandes dosis de tanicidad bien conducida que bien merecen ser domadas un tiempo más aun en botella. Con una crianza de dieciocho meses en barricas de roble de 300 litros, este ejemplar viste una botella exquisita que hace las delicias del más incondicional del diseño vinícola. Para descorchar con compañía y sorprender a más de uno. Listo para tomar con preparaciones vigorosas, como su uva.

Un civet de jabalí puede ser una delicia a la hora de aunarlo con este vino.

This Catalan bodega, part of the Pons Group, is located in the Costers Del Segre appellation area, in the south of the Lleida region of Les Garrigues, known and appreciated for its production of fine olive oil.

The bodega is an example of architectural and technological prowess, unrivaled in the area, and its wines have brought a region, which often goes unnoticed by the general public, to world attention. With a modern style and carefully crafted presentation, they do not just give a quick nod to aesthetics, but constantly focus on their guiding principle of making good wine to very high standards of quality and consistency.

Appearance: Very bright cherry red hue.

Nose: Pleasant. Fresh red fruit aromas with some rather peppery notes. No obvious traces of wood, although it exudes slightly chocolaty aromas.

Palate: Smooth and ripe, with a bit a body. Red fruit type flavours with pronounced spicy notes. Medium length finish.

Comment: A magnificent rarity from the 800 series, the number representing the total number of bottles of this wine released on the market each year. The last two digits denote the year of production. As you might expect, Selectus Wines are dutybound to feature these delectable wines and this particularly magnificent specimen of a unique wine was wild game to be hunted down! The 810 is made entirely from the Marselan grape variety, an oddity in Spain but well regarded in its various manifestations. Many Spanish producers have already started to produce some good examples having been keeping a close eye on the variety since the 90’s due to the good results seen in the Mediterranean. The 810 is a robust wine, with a large dose of well-managed tannin that deserves to be tamed in bottle a little longer. Aged for eighteen months in 300 litre oak barrels, this wine is presented in exquisite packaging which will delight hardcore wine design buffs. Uncork it in good company and surprise more than a few drinkers. Ready to be enjoyed with dishes which are robust, like the grape. A wild boar stew would pair deliciously with this one.

Bodega nacida a finales de los años 90 del pasado siglo en pleno “boom” renacentista del Priorat. Es una bodega totalmente familiar que aúna pasión por la honradez en sus vinos y compromiso extremo con el terruño.

Fundada por Pere Rovira, actualmente es dirigida con mucho tesón por sus hijas y con una cara bien visible como es la de Marta Rovira. Cuentan con cerca de 125 hectáreas donde aparte de viñedos encontramos olivos, siendo también uno de sus productos destacados la producción de un excelente aceite de oliva. Sin duda, una bodega a tener en cuenta dentro del panorama vitivinícola catalán que como ellos mismos describen, “embotellar tierra” en cada uno de sus vinos es su principal premisa.

Vista: Rojo picota de capa alta. Presencia de lágrima. Seductor.

Nariz: Desbordante. Muy expresivo.

Concentración de fruta negra fresca, recuerdos de madera noble. Exquisito.

Boca: De recreo. Más fino de lo que aparenta. Tanino bien domado, sin aristas.

Recuerdos constantes de fruta, notas dulzonas y cacao. Final eterno, con notable complejidad. Un gusto beberlo. De nota alta.

Comentario: El vino grande de la familia, el icono por excelencia que tan solo ve la luz aquellos años en que las condiciones han sido excepcionales. De este ejemplar del 2004 apenas se elaboraron 2900 botellas y su composición tiene alma de Garnacha con frescor de Cariñena. Fue criado por un año en barrica de roble francés y sorprendentemente se mantiene aun jovial. Es extremadamente expresivo y agradablemente fresco.

Si bien ya acarrea una década a sus espaldas, se mantiene en perfectas condiciones y le auguramos sin ningún problema un mínimo de cinco años en perfectas condiciones. Vale la pena ver la trayectoria alcanzada por estos vinos prioratinos de guarda, a los que tantas veces se ha puesto en entredicho por acusada falta de vivacidad pasados unos años. No es el caso y nos sirve perfectamente para rebatir dichos argumentos más bien sesgados y que poco reconocen el trabajo bien hecho.

Pueden disfrutarlo en ocasiones especiales con platos más bien contundentes como estofados o carnes de caza mayor.

This bodega was created in the 90’s when the Priorat Renaissance was in full swing. The bodega is family owned and managed and combines a passion for honesty in its wines with a single minded commitment to the terroir. Founded by Pere Rovira, it is currently managed with great resolve by his daughters, represented by the well-known figure of Marta Rovira.

They have about 125 hectares of vineyards where we find olive trees growing alongside the vines because an excellent olive oil is another of their outstanding products. With their driving principle of “bottling the terroir” in each of their wines, as they themselves put it, this is definitely a Catalan wine to be reckoned with.

Appearance: Very intense cherry red.

Visible tears. Alluring.

Nose: Overflowing. Very expressive.

Concentration of fresh dark fruit, aromas of noble oak. Exquisite.

Palate: Pure pleasure. Finer than it looks.

Well tamed tannin with no rough edges.

Persistent aromas of fruit, sweet notes and cocoa. Endlessly long finish with remarkable complexity. A pleasure to drink. High scorer.

Comment: This is the family’s great, iconic wine par excellence which only sees the light of day in those years when conditions are exceptional. They produced just 2,900 bottles of this 2004 and it possesses the soul of Garnacha and the freshness of Cariñena. It was aged for one year in French oak barrels and it is surprisingly still perky. It is extremely expressive and pleasantly fresh. With a decade already behind it, it remains in perfect condition and we predict that it will easily mature for at least another five years in the same perfect condition. It is worth seeing how these Priorat “laying down” wines develop over time as they have so often been accused of lacking acidity after a few years.

This is not the case and this wine serves us well to disprove these rather biased arguments unable to recognize a job well done. This wine can be enjoyed on special occasions with heartier dishes such as stews or game.

Este año sólo 7 llegaron a la final, y el ganador fue el restaurante Clou, de Dinamarca, con los hermanos Kjølhede Berntsen.

Cien años de solera – One hundred years of solera

Málaga Virgen: Catalina la Grande y los leones Málaga Virgen: Catherine the Great and the lions Paz Ivison Los vinos de Málaga tuvieron una extraordinaria fama que traspasó fronteras en el siglo XVIII, siendo los preferidos por la golosa zarina. La primera bodega embotelladora de este tipo de vino la crearon los hermanos López, apodados “los leones” por su valentía y capacidad de trabajo, hace más de 150 años. La historia no les hizo coincidir en el tiempo.

In the 18th Century, the extraordinary fame of the wines from Malaga crossed borders as they were the favourite wines of the sweet-toothed Tsarina. The first winery to bottle this type of wine was created over 150 years ago by the López brothers, dubbed “the Lions” for their courage and work ethos. Sadly history did not bring them together.

Dicen que Catalina la Grande adoraba los dulces vinos de Málaga y los tomaba con los llamados pasteles rusos, que también se los hacían llegar desde España a San Petersburgo. Ella no pudo conocer a los hermanos López, a los Leones. Hubieran entablado una gran amistad. Y también habría hecho excelentes migas con el rey bereber de la Taifa de Málaga, el buen Idris II, pero nació 750 años después que él. De modo que tampoco fue posible.

Este triángulo de personajes tan distantes en el tiempo tienen un denominador común: el vino de Málaga. Famoso internacionalmente desde los tiempos remotos de la Málaga mora hasta finales del XIX, cuando la aparición de la terrible filoxera, que por cierto y dicho sea de paso, entró en España por el puerto de esta capital andaluza.

El rey bereber tuvo el buen criterio de no prohibir el vino de su taifa malagueña, sino que lo bebió con profusión y le puso el nombre de xarab almalaquí, que quiere decir jarabe, dotándolo así de una componente inofensiva para librarle de las cadenas represoras del Corán.

They say that Catherine the Great loved the sweet wines of Malaga, enjoying them with cakes known as “Russian cakes”, which she also had brought to St. Petersburg from Spain. She would never meet the López brothers, the Lions (it could have been the start of a great friendship), as she had died long before their time. She would also have hit it off with the Taifa of Malaga’s Berber King, the good King Idris II, but she was born 750 years too late.

This triangle of characters, separated by history, share a common denominator: Malaga wine. This wine was famous around the world from the ancient times of Moorish Malaga to the late 19th century, when the dreaded phylloxera made its appearance, entering Spain by boat, coincidentally, via the port of Malaga.

Our Berber king, Idris II, had had the good sense not to ban wine from his Malaga taifa (muslim-ruled independent principality), and in fact drank copious amounts of it, calling it xarab almalaquí, meaning syrup, thereby positioning it as a harmless beverage and freeing it from the repressive restraints of the Koran.

En 1885, nos encontramos en Totalán, un pueblo cercano a Málaga a Salvador López López, emprendedor y valiente viticultor que no se arredró ante la maldita filoxera que ya empezaba a hacer estragos por su tierra.

Los “leones malagueños”

Salvador López ya elaboraba en sus propios lagares pero decidió montar una bodega ya con más enjundia y mayor producción para poder seguir abasteciendo los mercados de los reputados vinos malagueños.

Construyó unas instalaciones en Málaga capital, en el lugar llamado la Cruz del Molinillo.

A los pocos años su hermano, que era prohombre en la villa pues había llegado a ser alcalde de la misma, Francisco López López se asoció con él y la firma se llamó López Hermanos, recibiendo por parte de los malagueños, siempre prestos a poner motes, el cariñoso apodo de los leones, por su constancia, valentía y tesón.

Pasados los años, fueron sus descendientes los que continuaron la labor haciéndose cargo de las bodegas.

mattered. It is these two grape varieties which together go into the most well known wine produced by the traditional bodega founded by the López brothers, nicknamed “the Lions”. Let’s take a look at the story of this famous, highly-reputed bodega…

In 1885, Salvador López López found himself in Totalán, a small town near Malaga. This enterprising and audacious wine grower was undeterred by the dreaded phylloxera which was already beginning to wreak havoc on his land.

The “Malaga lions”

Salvador López was already producing wine in his own wine presses but decided to set up a better quality, higher production winery to continue to supply the markets for the reputed Malaga wines. He built a facility in Malaga, in an area known as La Cruz del Molinillo.

A few years later his brother, Francisco López López, an important man as he had become the local mayor, joined him as a partner and the company became López Hermanos. The people of Malaga, ever quick to confer nicknames, affectionately dubbed them “los leones” (the lions), due to their perseverance, courage and tenacity. Over the years,

their descendants continued the work of managing the wineries. There were three of them: José López García, Salvador López Palacios, and a son-in-law, Rafael de Burgos Carrillo. Through sheer hard work, the three young lions managed to steer the company through the tough 1930’s when to survive alone was a triumph, as the Spanish civil war had left the company completely undercapitalized

Uno de sus grandes éxitos debió inspirarse en aquella feliz idea que tuvo el mencionado rey de Málaga, de la época de los reinos de Taifa, Idris II, al llamarle jarabe al vino y sacarlo de su nicho alcohólico. Captan la atención de los mercados al centrar la comunicación en las virtudes alimenticias y reconstituyentes que tenían los vinos de Málaga y aromatizando uno de estos vinos dulces con extractos de quinina.

and large quantities of wine had been seized. One of their greatest successes was certainly inspired by Idris II, king of Malaga at the time of the Taifa kingdoms, and his clever idea of calling the wine “syrup” to take it out of its alcoholic niche. They caught market attention by basing their communication on Malaga wines’ nutritional and restorative virtues and by flavouring one of these sweet wines with extracts of quinine.

La gran fama que consiguió su vino quinado, Kina San Clemente, en gran parte se debe también a la imaginación que tuvieron al acompañarlo de un simpático personaje, el muñeco Kinito que fue toda una imagen de una época, y se convirtió en el pilar que propició el enorme desarrollo de la bodega Inquietos e inteligentes, no paran de estudiar nuevas presentaciones comerciales, realizando grandes campañas publicitarias que hacen que se produzca uno de los “booms” de marketing más importantes de los años 60. La idea de llamar a uno de sus vinos más vendidos Málaga Virgen, bastante anterior al slogan del famoso de la pura lana, fue otro de los grandes éxitos de esta bodega.

The fame of Kina San Clemente, their wine with quinine extracts, was also in large part due to the smart move of associating it with a likeable character, the Kinito figure, which became a symbol of an era, and the foundation on which the spectacular growth of the business was built.

Restless and intelligent, the Lions tirelessly explored new business opportunities, creating great advertising campaigns that led to one of the biggest marketing “booms” of the 1960’s. The idea of calling one of their best-selling wines Malaga ‘Virgen’, long before the word virgin was associated with pure wool, was another of their great successes.

Pasados otros diez años, dos de los nietos de los hermanos López, Juan Ignacio y Rafael de Burgos, adquieren el 80% de las acciones de la empresa.

Some years later, in the 1970’s, they moved the winery to the outskirts of Malaga, to the El Viso estate, where it had larger premises and better logistics, building a large modern winery equipped with top notch equipment and facilities. Ten years later, two of the López brothers’ grandchildren, Juan Ignacio and Rafael de Burgos, acquired 80% of the shares in the company

En 2005 su hermano Juan Ignacio y su hija Piluca compran todas las acciones a Rafael, que fallece poco tiempo después, quedándose padre e hija como únicos accionistas.

Se decide cambiar la razón social de la bodega, hasta ahora López Hermanos, y llamarla Málaga Virgen, habida cuenta de la gran fama que esta marca tenía en el mundo entero y asimismo, también cambia la sede social, que se traslada a la finca y bodega Vista Hermosa, en Fuente de Piedra, al norte de Málaga, en tierras cercanas a la provincia de Córdoba. En Enero de 2008 lamentablemente fallece prematuramente Juan Ignacio de Burgos, y su hija Piluca se queda como única propietaria. Ella es la cuarta generación de los leones de Málaga junto a su marido, Didier Bricout, que ya venía colaborando con el negocio desde hacía 15 años.

The Vista Hermosa Estate

In 2005, Juan Ignacio and Juan Ignacio’s daughter, Piluca, bought all of Rafael’s shares and Rafael passed away shortly afterwards, leaving father and daughter as sole shareholders.

They decided to change the company name, known as López Hermanos until that time, to Malaga Virgen, due to this brand’s international reputation. They also moved the location of the headquarters to the Vista Hermosa estate and bodega in Fuente de Piedra, north of Malaga, on land close to the province of Córdoba. Sadly, Juan Ignacio de Burgos died prematurely in January 2008, and his daughter Piluca became the sole owner. She is the fourth generation of the lions of Malaga, and is married to Didier Bricout, who had already been working with the business for 15 years.
