Celebrating red and white at Blue A rainy Canada Day didn’t stop the crowds at Blue Mountain from enjoying the celebration of our great nation’s 149th birthday. Appreciative and patriotic people joined local political leaders and representatives from Blue Mountain for the ceremony and singing of our national anthem. The celebration of course would not be complete without the Canadian cupcakes! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

BUSINESS PROFILE Fleet-Wood Dancentre Inc. Fleet-Wood Dancentre is Collingwood’s Premiere School of Dance. Opened in 1994, it is the oldest School of Dance in the area, and continues to offer the best training in the Georgian Triangle. Highly trained professional staff teach classes in Cecchetti Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary, Tap, Acro, Hip Hop, competitions, ballet exams and present a yearly recital. Co-Founders Jane Wooding and Sharron Williams Fleet trained Sierra Maraj, Jonathan Fleet and Colin Eccles from childhood. They watched them grow and pass all the required exams to become teachers. Sharron is very proud of these young people and is most happy to have them carry on as teachers for Fleet-Wood Dancentre.

Jonathan’s role at Fleet-Wood Dancentre is both a jazz and ballet teacher for pre-professional and recreational students ages 18 months to 18 years. Aside from his main role as a dance teacher, Jonathan also edits the music for both performances of their annual recital and the Nutcracker Christmas at Meaford Hall, and for competitions such as Muskoka Ballet Gala, Luv 2 Dance and Dance Canada. Sierra graduated from George Brown College in two separate dance programs - a two year Dance Performance Studies diploma and a one year dance certificate. Her role at Fleet-wood Dancentre is teaching preprofessional and recreational students Acro, Contemporary, Hip Hop and Modern Dance. She is also certified to teach Ballet, Jazz and Pointe. Having worked with highly accomplished dancers like Sharon Moore and Derek Sangster, and performing in their Toronto shows, has given Sierra an even wider scope of knowledge to share with her students. Locally, Sierra coordinates and performs in the Collingwood Christmas Living Windows project in downtown storefront windows each year. Jonathan Fleet studied at The Quinte School of Dance in Belleville, taking classes with Brian and David Scott and Frank Augustine. He also attended George Brown College’s Dance Preparation Program and is also a graduate of The Early Childhood Education Program which assists him in teaching young children. The Cecchetti Method of classical ballet is committed to the highest standards of training for dancers and teachers. Both Sierra and Jonathan achieved their Cecchetti Intermediate exams and are working towards Advanced and Associate. Sierra plans to take her Acro to the next level, as well as be more involved in the day to day management of Fleet-Wood Dancentre. Jonathan and Sierra will be teaching at Fleet-Wood’s satellite studio in Creemore at Station on The Green. Sharron says “I look forward to watching Colin, Sierra and Jonathan carrying the leadership roles for Fleet-Wood Dancentre, bringing new technique, dance forms and projects to the students. Continuing the goal of offering classes for both the recreation student, and those seeking a professional career in a warm and caring atmosphere”. Golfing for a cure Dr. Kellie Leitch hosted the 16th Annual Lynne Leitch Memorial Golf Tourney on July 4th at Osler Brook Golf Club. Before the 96 golfers began their Shotgun Scramble, Leslie R. Farkas from Skydive Wasaga parachuted down to the 10th fairway holding a 1,000 square foot Canadian Flag. Everyone enjoyed a perfect summer day with cool breezes. The tournament was organized in memory of Kellie’s late mother Lynne Leitch who died of breast cancer. The funds raised will be donated to The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Come sail for hope Registration is now open for Sail for Hope happening Sunday August 28th at the Thornbury Harbour. The event is run by the Thornbury Yacht Club with proceeds supporting The Canadian Cancer Society. This fundraiser brings together both volunteer host skippers with their sailboats, power boats and guests for a wonderful summer afternoon. The Thornbury Yacht Club skippers volunteer their boats and crew to take guests on an enjoyable and relaxing cruise through the scenic waters of Southern Georgian Bay. The proceeds from Sail for Hope are donated to the Canadian Cancer Society – Town of the Blue Mountains Branch. Over the last 8 years, the event has raised over $100,000 for the region. Tickets are $95 per person and includes the sail, food and entertainment. A $45 tax receipt is given for each ticket sold. The event starts at 1pm when the fleet leaves to cruise Southern Georgian Bay. Guests will enjoy views of the many sail and power boats that dot these waters each weekend and enjoy seeing Thornbury, the beautiful shoreline and the natural magnificence of the Niagara Escarpment from a different perspective. Returning to the Harbour around 4pm guests, skippers and their crews are invited to enjoy a silent auction, music and take part in other fun fundraising activities. This is followed by a signature food experience Taste of Thornbury where several local restaurants have stations and offer a taste of their signature dishes. The Wishing Well It’s a common fact that we all have wishes. Wishes for having done something differently in the past or wishing we could have something better in the future. Many people I have come in contact with are wishing they could win the lottery! In fact, sadly there is a large percentage of the population wishing for a successful financially free retirement and it involves them winning the lottery! What are the chances? Well a good friend who plays the lottery regularly says, “You can’t win if you don’t buy a ticket.” I agree I can’t. My wishing well just isn’t that deep. The things I wish for are to live a life with fewer regrets. I wish for and I am grateful for an opportunity to spend more time with the people I love and care for. Health can change in an instant. There will be several people today that arrive in hospital that felt fine yesterday. Not long ago I was one of them. Thanks to modern medicine and another chance, I can wish for and be proactive in doing the things that will make a positive difference in the lives of the people around me. You can too. By slowing life down to observe the importance of the people around us, we all tend to care more. In caring more, we love more. Everyone wishes to be loved and appreciated. Letting someone know they are special to you is one of life’s most special gifts. In last month’s article I encouraged you to write a hand written note, sharing how much you appreciate someone, how they are really good at something and how they are making a difference in other’s lives is a priceless gift. Taking the time to do so, involves being intentional. You have to get the card, write the note and deliver it. It all takes time and we all wish we had more of it. Well the hot days of summer are here and on those really hot days we wish for cool nights. It won’t be long until another summer will have passed us by. When I help put retirement years and wishes into perspective for our clients, “ten summers doesn’t seem quite as long as ten years…”

Slides and smiles all day long Meaford residents and visitors were more than willing to let out their wet and wild side on July 9th as the Urban Slide came to town. The inflatable 1000-foot slide brought people flocking to Nelson Street. The organizers at 365 Sports pledged all of the proceeds will go toward supporting the Meaford Hospital. Photos/Story: T.S. Giilck

What I wish for all of you, is to take some time to slow life down, for you. Observe and give thanks. Tell someone every day that they are loved and appreciated. In doing so, your wishing well will be deep with “Thanks living.” Have a great summer. Brian A. Canada Day at Wasaga Beach July 1st was a busy day at Wasaga Beach, starting with a pancake breakfast hosted by Wasaga Beach Lions Club at Playland Area of Beach One that was followed by the “official” opening of the Main Street Market, performances of artists throughout the day, as well as the 2nd annual CrossFit competition. MIFF launches the 10th anniversary season The Meaford International Film festival announced its 10th anniversary season on July 1st. “From September 1st to September 4th our films will cover a wide range of subjects”, said Artistic Director Christopher Thomas, “but the unifying theme is ‘the joy of finding yourself and doing what it takes to make that dream come true, starting with our new addition to the line-up , the MIFF Classic. The MIFF Classic is a one-time only matinee on opening day. A chance to see an award winning film again, or perhaps for the first time. This year it’s Kinky Boots, the film that inspired the smash hit musical. Based on a true story, the movie follows a strait laced shoe factory owner in the U.K. who saves his struggling business by partnering with a flamboyant transvestite cabaret star. The result is Kinky Boots and powerful insights. “A blend of trash and sass that is a comfy fit”, according to Rolling Stone Magazine. It also fits perfectly with the opening night Gala presentation: The Danish Girl. An extraordinary love story, a visual feast, and a testament to the courage of a transgender pioneer, all in one remarkable film based on a true story that is even more topical today than it was in the 1930’s. Friday September 2nd offers what the San Francisco Chronicle called “A funny, edgy, engaging tale” called The Second Mother. On Saturday September 3rd, Dheepan is a film that takes you behind the headlines of a story that has dominated everything from Brexit to Donald Trump’s Presidential Campaign and Immigration. The Closing Gala presentation is Mustang. A winner of 30 awards and short listed for both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. Set in rural Turkey, The Las Vegas Weekly called it a “wonderfully refreshing experience.” The MIFF motto is “Four Nights, Four Films, Four Parties, Four Dinners” and that includes catered meals before each show. The meals are prepared and served by a different local establishment each evening. Andrews Roots will serving on Thursday (Sept 1), followed by The Kitchen on Friday (Sept 2), The Dam Pub in Thornbury on Saturday (Sept 3) and finally Captain’s Corner on Sunday (Sept 4). You can also sample their free hors-d’oeuvres at the after party, and maybe take home a valuable trivia quiz prize basket. The Meaford Hall Arts & Cultural Centre is the proud presenter of MIFF. Tickets for the films and parties are available from the Meaford Hall Box Office from 8:30am - 4:30pm daily or by phone 1-877538-0463. Matinees begin at 1:30 pm, the evening show start at 7pm., all are showcased in the renovated Meaford Hall Opera House, 12 Nelson St. E. A family that eats together...

Celebrating 6 years of peace of mind.

Collingwood celebrated Canada Day with a Farm to Street Feast meal: an outdoor, family-style eating experience. The meal was served all together at one long table, going back to the original roots of good fresh food, seasonal ingredients with a focus on those grown locally, enjoyed in the company of friends and family. The meals were prepared by local chefs and enjoyed on Simcoe Street in the downtown art district. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Kittypalooza was purrfect The Kittypalooza event found loving homes for 70 cats and kittens from the Georgian Triangle Humane Society. “We are blown away by the support and enthusiasm from our community. Adopters were lining up to view our adoptable cats, we were just thrilled! We know that our shelter will fill up again quickly as there are many lives that need our help. This event will serve to increase our ability to help others. It is going to be a busy summer” stated Sonya Reichel, Executive Director. Kittypalooza ran July 8-10, averaging one adoption every ten minutes for the entire weekend. Highlighting the event, several bonded pairs and long term residents found their forever home which was heart-warming to see. Photos: mycollingwood.ca | Story: Sonya Reichel

Power when you need it! Automatic standby generators; A safe, reliable unit that works for you when the power goes out. These machines serve many purposes, whether you want to have functioning lights during a storm, internet & phones, keeping your cold & frozen foods from spoiling or maintaining that sub pump. There’s a generator for everyone’s needs! You would be surprised at the growing demand of generators. From a small air cooled unit to the liquid cooled machines. Your neighbour, your friend who travels, local businesses & restaurants, weekenders... the list goes on. There are many advantages of owning a standby generator. A standby generator ensures that you will not be without power; it automatically detects a power failure and provides continuous power throughout your home or business. FMachines fueled by natural gas or propane will ensure a longer run time than gasoline powered units, and there is no need to worry about having enough gas on hand. At the Generator Guys they handle every aspect of your installation and will break down each task. This includes: creating a level location and setting a base, provide gas piping and hook up, electrical wiring and connections and the necessary permits and inspections. They will complete the installation by commissioning the unit and registering the warranty. Get expert advice and tips to choose the right generator to protect your home, vacation property or business. Keeping a hopeful message alive The first “Beautiful Joe Day”, sponsored by its namesake society, attracted an audience to Beautiful Joe Park in Meaford on July 14th. A reading of excerpts from the famous novel by Margaret Marshall Saunders was held for a group of people, mostly children. The novel was the first in Canada to sell more than a million copies, society members said, and the book has become an important part of local and Canadian history. The Society is always enhancing and maintaining the wonderful 8.5 acre park known as Beautiful Joe Park, and is also where Beautiful Joe is laid to rest. Photos/Story: T.S. Giilck

Teens discover their Genius The teens in the SWAC (Students Within a College) program at Georgian College, South Georgian Bay Campus discovered their Genius on their last day of class. Creating with Lego, the teens learned that collaborating with different Genius types results in stronger teams – and stronger results. Playing Twister really demonstrated the power and strength that they have when they stand in their own Genius and, if you’re not playing to your strengths, things become a bit unbalanced and more challenging – though still possible. It was a great morning of learning through creativity, discovery, discussion and fun! The workshop was facilitated by Sandra Smart from The Talent Switch who is a Personal Development Coach for Tweens, Teens & Young Adults. Submitted by: Sandra Smart
