49 Huron St., Collingwood | 705-445-5805 | www.reefnbeef.ca John Redick was born and raised in Collingwood, the community in which his father was the agent and owner of the co-operators. He began his Insurance career as a co-op student in 1988 after graduating from Mohawk College. John’s father encouraged him to learn all aspects of their well established family business. The co-operators provides coverage for the important things in life, specifically auto, home, life, group, business, farm and travel insurance as well as mutual funds and RRSPs. The insurance experts on their team are equipped with the latest information to help you better understand your policies and financial plans. You can trust them to ensure that your coverage and investments continue to meet your changing needs. John has encountered many opportunities to grow and expand the co-operators, but the most important direction was opening a second location in Wasaga Beach in 1995. When asked which one word would describe him best, John replied “Passionate, I love what I do and I wear my heart on my sleeve”. His father has been his mentor and guide through the years, teaching him important things like how to fight for a client who has made a claim and was treated unfairly. John will always go to bat for his clients to help them get proper compensation. He is most proud of being able to take over from his father and still keep the agency in top standing with the co-operators Group and their local clients. Delivering Life Insurance Death Benefit cheques to beneficiaries helps John realize the value of his work. The co-operators and W.D. Redick and Associates Inc. is a name you can trust. “You deserve a personalized approach with one-on-one advice and answers to all of your insurance and investment questions. You can also expect service beyond your policy purchase; we’ll keep you informed of any changes or new products” states John Redick.

Summertime fun
Need new equipment? So do we.
Summer is here. What are your plans? Did you know that summer is the best time to find the elusive work/life balance? Here are 8 simple strategies to transform your life: 1. Get up with the sun – Watch how your energy will expand. Go to work full of zest and spend your evenings enjoying the longer daylight.
Fixing an old broken bike is one thing, but when the crank is worn and the chain keeps falling off… time for a new bike. Sometimes it’s not that easy. It takes time to plan and build a new Hospital. In the meantime we need to update our outdated Emergency Department to make it as efficient as possible. Our current 1950’s style layout is an old model of care and we want to keep up with the best, most recent practices. A change as simple as reconfiguring work stations to improve sight lines to patients or increasing storage areas for medical supplies, means that doctors can get to more patients quickly, reducing wait times and increasing efficiency.
2. Eat healthier – Improve your vitality and wellbeing by adding the delicious bounty of fresh vegetables and fruit in season to your menu. 3. Get outdoors – Be active and keep your mind alert. Go for a walk, swim, or play a round of golf. 4. Enjoy summer activities – Reduce the stress. Forget the workload worry by participating in and enjoying local festivals, patios and the summertime fun. 5. Relax – Let your body restore itself. Take a break when you can, go camping, visit the cottage or slumber in a hammock. 6. Replenish your vitamin D – The sun is good for us, it makes everything grow. You need it too, just don’t over-do it. 7. Make new memories – Feel alive and empowered to be more creative. Relive some from your childhood memories, building sand castles or going for ice cream. 8. Go on an adventure – Take a chance and do something new. Visit a place you have never been or take up a new hobby. Feel inspired to take a risk in other areas of your life. Experience the care free days of summer and enjoy your life. The summer is short and the memories are long. After years of coaching, no one has ever said “I am having too much fun, don’t give me any more”. We all deserve to be happy.
With your help, we’ll make wise investments today that bridge the gap to the future of our Hospital.

Let the colours fly! The tremendously successful inaugural Collingwood ArtXPress held at Millennium Park on Friday June 10th saw young artists (aged 14-19) of all levels and backgrounds express their artistic flair on canvas, paper or board. The friendly competition consisted of three categories: Paint it, Draw it and Spray it and involved three - 20 minute lightning rounds of live art-making. It was a delightful evening complete with live music and the opportunity for guests to purchase one of the newly created artworks in a silent auction. The originality and creativity displayed by all of these gifted young artists was simply incredible! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Plantar Fasciitis - A real pain in the foot The most common type of foot pain is a condition called Plantar Fasciitis. This condition is not gender, age or activity specific. It can be present in active and non-active individuals. The plantar fascia is a wide thick band of tissue that supports the bottom of the foot and attaches at the heel bone and runs the length of the foot and inserts just before the toes. The pain is located on the bottom of the foot and most frequently around the heel. A person with Plantar Fasciitis usually has heel pain when taking those first steps in the morning. In the early stages of this condition the pain goes away after about 10 minutes of walking, then reappears after a prolonged seated position to standing. The pain follows a cycle of on / off throughout the day. Advanced cases can display symptoms of continuous heel and arch pain throughout the day with little relief. The pain comes from a tear in the Plantar Fascia tissue. These tears are micro in size and most often develop near the heel bone where the tissue attaches. Foot shape and structure play a big part in developing tears, along with poor foot mechanics, leg length discrepancies and day to day activities. Completing a biomechanical assessment can be helpful if you are concerned about your feet. Treatment options vary and will be determined after an examination. Treatment options can include one or more of the following: Physiotherapy, Chiropractic treatment, custom made foot orthotics, shockwave therapy, night splints and massage therapy, as each has a place in the treatment of your feet. For further information regarding treatments that are effective in combating plantar fasciitis, please contact the Orthopaedic Sport Institute at (705) 467-0701 or info@ortho-sport.ca and ask for a consultation with one of our friendly healthcare professionals. Summer fun at the library If you want something for the kids to do besides going to the beach or lounging around the house, there’s lots going on at the Collingwood Public Library. “We’re encouraging kids to continue with their reading during the summer,” says Children & Teen Services Supervisor, Ashley Kulchycki. “Research has shown that a summer without reading often means starting from scratch when school starts again in September.” She is encouraging parents to register their children for the TD Summer Reading Club at the library. Participants simply record how long they read during the summer for their chance to win free books. “We are also building a Tower of Books this year,” Ashley says. “For every piece of literature a child reads, a book will be added to the tower. Can the kids of Collingwood read more than the staff at the library?” Other programmes include story times that offer the opportunity to dress up like a ninja, learn about railroads, or bring along a stuffed animal for a sleepover. A special story time that takes place at the Collingwood Fire Hall on 45 High Street, features a fire fighter who reads a story book to the children and gives them a tour of the fire hall afterward. Crafts are always popular where kids can put together their own terrarium or plant wild flowers in newspaper pots. And a group event called “Escape from the Library” provides a fun evening for families to crack codes, gather clues, and discover how to “escape from the library.” Teens have their own programmes and events, including DIY craft workshops and a summer gardening club where teens can earn volunteer service hours by helping to weed, water, and harvest the library’s community garden. They will also be able to keep up their reading skills with the Teen Summer Reading Challenge where they can pick up ballots to win prizes if they complete the challenge on the ticket. As in years past a good number of teams participated and once again money was raised for this very deserving cause. Participants had a blast riding around town both raising awareness for Heart & Stroke and receiving ‘honks of support’ from local motorists and passersby. Job well done organizers and teams! Holmes makes Meaford a place to call home Third Line Homes was happy to get the much anticipated “thumbs up” from Mike Holmes after the contractor and popular television personality did the walk through of his new home at TerraceWood – Meaford’s boutique healthy home community. “It’s about taking residential construction to the very next level – redefining the way homes are built,” states Holmes.

Third Lines Homes is a Holmes Approved Builder. Two years ago, the two companies worked together to build a “healthy home” four-plex in Atikameksheng Anishnawbek – a First Nation Community west of Sudbury. Last year, Mike bought the first house at Meaford’s Terracewood and has let Third Line use his home as a construction “model home” to showcase the quality of the build. These homes are toxin free, mould and fire resistant, sound and termite proof, super energy efficient and feature superior indoor air quality. “We are delighted to get a major thumbs-up from Mike”, says Paul Osborn, President of Third Line Homes, “It’s a real credit to the quality of our construction and the great work of all of our people.” To find out more about TerraceWood visit terracewood.ca. Mountain madness Met Con Blue style The crazies (you know the type … the people who actually enjoy getting up early on a Saturday morning to run, crawl, climb, swing, slither and sweat over 5+ km of rugged terrain and brutal obstacles) were at it again punishing themselves on the hills of Blue Mountain on Saturday June 11th for the annual Met Con Blue. For the first time this year the two-day event also included a fantastic Kids Met Con on Friday. As I’ve said before I’m not sure who is more insane the aforementioned crazies or the deviously twisted organizers who come up with new forms of torture each year for these poor misguided people to endure! Mission accomplished... now let’s get in shape and ready for 2017! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

Second annual Palaver festival coming to Wasaga Beach Writers, poets, storytellers, musicians and authors from Canada and beyond will arrive in Wasaga Beach August 6th and 7th for the second annual Palaver International Literary Festival. Award winning authors and poets will read from their published works and share experiences. Storytellers will entertain and amuse as they make historical and cultural linkages across time and space. And, for two days and a night, participants will share the enriching and meaningful experience that is Palaver. “My soul, mind & body have been refreshed by the ‘feast-ival’ of spoken word, music, dance, cuisine, fun, laughter, catching up with high school mates and in the best possible setting of Wasaga Beach,” one participant posted on Palaver Facebook following the inaugural event. LITERATURE, MUSIC, CUISINE - The festival, which celebrates the many cultures of the Caribbean space, begins on Saturday at Wasaga Beach Area 4 with open microphone for poets who have been registered for the event. (Registration must be done on the Palaver website, www.palaver.ca in order to be invited to the Open Mic.) This will be followed by the official opening ceremony at noon at Beach Area 4. Following the opening ceremony, the main stage at Beach Area 4 will see a succession of outstanding poets and storytellers all day Saturday and Sunday.
The second event to celebrate Caribbean cuisine will be on Sunday, August 7th. Chef Richards returns for ‘Feast on the Beach... a Caribbean delight’. He plans a spectacular Sunday brunch buffet against the backdrop of beautiful Georgian Bay and the distant Blue Mountain range. The Palaver Sunday Brunch buffet is not to be missed. Day 2 at Palaver begins at Beach Area 4 with a learning experience at 9.30am. Prolific writer and author of a dozen books, Horane Smith, will present a workshop entitled ‘First steps to Becoming a Writer’. This will be followed by Open Mic poetry and the Sunday brunch buffet. The brunch buffet morphs into Books and Authors, the event that made Palaver immediately popular. Books and Authors is an event in which writers of different backgrounds and experience share with appreciative audiences. In moments, sometimes of great intimacy and emotion, authors explore their life and work; reliving experiences they recall joyfully and some they would like to forget. It all happens at the Palaver literary festival at Wasaga Beach, on August 6 and 7. Register for the event and make reservations for the Palaver Awards Dinner, the Feast on the Beach Sunday brunch buffet and the Writer’s Workshop: First Steps To Becoming a Writer at: www.palaver.ca. Proceeds from Palaver support programmes of the Wasaga Beach Public Library.
The annual Palaver Awards Dinner takes place on Saturday night in the RecPlex Auditorium, featuring a stellar after-dinner show and presentation of the 2016 Palaver Awards. On stage will be popular folk music ensemble The Heritage Singers and famous Jamaican jazz pianist, Orville Hammond. GREAT AUTHENTIC CARIBBEAN FOOD - The Palaver Awards Dinner is one of two events in which Palaver celebrates the cuisine of the Caribbean. Executive chef and author, Selwyn Richards, perhaps the most celebrated Caribbean chef in Canada, plans a special event as this year’s Palaver Awards Dinner falls on the 54th Anniversary of Jamaican independence. The theme selected for the 2016 Palaver Awards Dinner and Show is ‘A birthday toast to Jamaica’, and Chef Richards is planning a very special Jamaican dinner for the occasion.

Theatre Collingwood gets funky No one would have believed it possible to outdo last years En Blanc theme but Theatre Collingwood certainly pulled it off with this years Motown Gala fundraiser at the Westin Trillium. Some patrons got really funky in unique and colourful garb reminiscent of the 60’s and 70’s. It was a fantastic evening complete with great food, amazing musical entertainment by the St. Royals, and live and silent auctions in support of our local theatre. Kudos! The trail is totally funded and maintained by volunteers who work tirelessly to provide a well marked pathway that everyone who loves the outdoors can use. Blue Mountains Bruce Trail Clubt is always short of volunteers and anyone wishing to help would be warmly welcomed. Training is provided. Organized hikes at a variety of levels take place every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year. Information about hikes and volunteer opportunities can be found on the website www.bmbtc.org. A cup of java sends kids to camp While summer camp is an experience most kids cherish in memory throughout their lives, sadly with the economics of today it is prohibitive and costly for so many families. Thanks to the efforts of the Tim Hortons Foundation and local franchisee Jan Trude, her staff and volunteers, thousands of kids are able to have the opportunity to enjoy a ‘summer tradition’ and growing experience. Kudos to all and thanks once again for your annual efforts in support of this great program ‘Camp Day’. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
BUSINESS PROFILE L. Patten & Sons L. Patten & Sons Ltd. brings over fifty years of custom home building experience to every project they undertake. The Patten Family takes pride in building custom homes that are as beautiful to look at as they are comfortable to live in. Their ultimate goal is to help clients realize their dreams. Quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and complete customer satisfaction are what sets L. Patten & Sons apart from other home builders. Every minor detail is taken into consideration through the entire development process, and it shows in every home they build. L. Patten & Sons Limited is a family owned and operated company, since Lyman Patten established the business in 1958 with his sons. His son Grant eventually took over the business and successfully built homes for over 25 years. Now, his son Jerry is the president and driving force behind the company with his daughter, Kristine, as the office manager. Jerry Patten grew up in the business starting with part-time jobs at 14 years old, then started working full-time with his dad right out of high school. In addition to formal schooling in the trades, Jerry has spent his entire adult life learning, hands-on, from some very talented people. Jerry and his team work with clients to build them the home of their dreams. From design to completion, clients are involved in every aspect of the build. “I am a proud local boy, born and raised in this incredible community. I’ve seen a lot of things change over the years, and the changes have been good ones. I can’t imagine being anywhere else” mentions Jerry. L. Patten & Sons employs 20 full-time staff who are committed to the goals and values of the company. Jerry is really proud of the fact that he is able to continue to grow a business that his grandfather started 58 years ago. It’s a legacy that he values, and works hard to maintain the quality and work ethic that his father and grandfather passed on. Jerry mentioned he owes a debt of gratitude to Don Gallinger and the late Dale Tkatch, who helped him learn a great deal about the business and shared their wisdom and humour with him. L. Patten & Sons home owners can rest assured that their new home will be a source of pride and satisfaction for many years to come. Written and photographed by Bryan Davies

Side Launch Brewing Company wins Canadian Brewery Of The Year Side Launch Brewing Company Inc, a local craft brewery, has been named Canadian Brewery of The Year for 2016. “We are very excited and honoured to have won this award” said Chuck Galea, V.P. of Sales and Marketing. “We have had a huge year so far in regards to awards and we are really excited at the notion of us helping put Collingwood on the map as a craft beer destination.” Along with winning Canadian Brewery of The Year, Side Launch also earned three gold medals for their Side Launch Wheat, Side Launch Huronic Tripel, and Side Launch Germanic Bock. In April at the Ontario Brewing Awards, Side Launch took home four medals with Side Launch Huronic Tripel winning Gold and Side Launch Mountain Lager, Side Launch Dark Lager and the barrel-aged Side Launch Dunkelbach all winning bronze medals. In early May, the Ontario Beer Guide was released by co-authors Jordan St. John and Robin Leblanc and not only did Side Launch beers receive very high ratings overall, but they named it “Top Brewery in Ontario” “Winning all this hardware and being recognized as the top brewery in our province has everything to do with the beer that our Head Brewer, Michael Hancock, makes. In addition, we have an amazing crew and are very proud of what we have accomplished .” says Galea Side Launch Brewing Company opened its doors in May 2014 and now employs over 30 people. It is located at 200 Mountain Road, Unit 1 in Collingwood. Side Launch’s award winning beers are available at the brewery, various LCBO’s across Ontario, select Beer Stores, select Grocery Stores, and various bars and restaurants in Ontario. Set on the beautiful shores of Georgian Bay at Sunset Point Park in Collingwood, gourmet chefs from some of the finest dining establishments in the South Georgian Bay area tantalized taste buds, vintners and brewers from around the region provided a little something to ‘wash down’ all those delightful treats. One day closer to a healthy and fit community
by Brian McMillan CFP, CLU, CH.F.C, EPC
As part of a country wide initiative to make Canada the fittest nation, the Helping others live life with fewer regrets Town of Collingwood joined other communities across Canada in celebrating National Health and Fitness Day on June 4th. The event filled day which featured a host of demonstrations, was the perfect opportunity to get active, I am reminded by events like anniversaries and birthdays that there have have some fun, get information on sports and recreation programs in the been a number of good things happen in my life. There’s nothing like a community and celebrate and promote the use of local health, recreational, good birthday celebration to remind me that I am getting older. As I get sports and fitness facilities. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography older I find myself reflecting more. Sometimes I reflect on the things I wish I had said and done. What I have come to appreciate is openness and honesty in the relationships with my children and family. I work closely with many families that don’t have such openness and transparency and it causes friction and pain. In some cases people haven’t spoken to each other in years. When I come across this situation I try to get the person to open up about the past. Sometimes in listening to the story, it’s clear to me that people should find a way to get over it. Chances are the people who have committed the wrong, may not even know it. In some cases they can’t even really remember why they stopped talking in the first place. When I come across such situations, I try to think of ways to encourage the person to connect with their past. To find a way to open a door of reconciliation. I suggest that the person write a note to the offender(s) and let the other person(s) tknow that they are sorry that they haven’t reached out before now. I want them to know they are forgiven and loved… I know some of you are saying “how can I forgive that person for what they have done to me?” The truth is, the person writing the note will feel less burdened. We want to be helping people live their lives with fewer regrets. The pain of regret is deep. I help and encourage my clients to write “Legacy Notes” to their family and friends. Secondly, everyone is good at something and I encourage to tell them how proud they are for their special ability. Thirdly, I suggest they find something to encourage them to use their unique gift and compassion to help others. I suggest they leave their notes with their important papers. I can’t imagine anything more powerful than to leave a “Legacy Note”. I can even provide them some of my limited edition water colour cards to do so. The notes are hand signed and numbered. I encourage them to write the notes to their children and tell them that they are loved. Samples of limited edition cards are on my website www.brianmcmillan.ca. So as you reflect on the past I encourage you to consider the things you wish you had said and done. I am reminded by a good friend “that you will be more likely to regret the things you did not say or do!” Brian A. Plenty to do on Father’s Day at the beach The Town of Wasaga Beach organized a waterfront festival on Father’s Day at Beach Area 1. The always popular KiteFest was part of the event, as well as the Wacky Boat Regatta organized by the Nancy Island Lions. The boats had to be created entirely of recycled materials and everyone had lots of fun, with the Wacky Woodland Warriors team winning 1st prize for fastest time. The Youth Centre sold refreshments, Hand Racing set up a track on the beach, there was sand sculpting and so much more, making it a fantastic weekend! Story/Photos: Enrique Miranda
BUSINESS PROFILE Beaver and Bulldog Sports Pub & Wingery Much like fur trading created the birth of Canada as a Nation; the Pub has come to clearly define what Britain is to the world. In the evolution of the Pub, it is now the Beaver and Bulldog that rewrites history and sets a new culinary course in dining and social gathering. They bring together a truly inspired menu and a dash of local colour in an innovative Sports Pub & Wingery. Pub Proprietors, Kevin and Catherine Bennington opened Beaver and Bulldog on Nov. 21st, 2003. After two fast-food outlets had failed on the same property, Kevin had a hunch that a newly designed PubStyle Restaurant with freshly made cuisine would be very successful... and he was right. Kevin has been in the pub business since he was 13 years old, when his mother was a pub owner in Britain. He was pleased to have his mother as his mentor and guide. Catherine and Kevin selected a good staff, who are all still a big part of the success of Beaver and Bulldog. Their recipe for success is loyal customers, good food cooked from scratch, excellent service, friendly atmosphere and dedicated staff. Catherine and Kevin are very proud that a local newspaper has recently selected Beaver and Bulldog the number one choice in Pub, Patio, Wings and Service categories. One of the things they focused on when developing the Beaver and Bulldog concept was that a single woman could come into the restaurant and order a glass of wine at the Bar and feel comfortable. Gone is the old pub idea where only men gather to quaff some brew. Kevin met Catherine when they were both working at The Fish Market Restaurant in Toronto. Over the years they have been working together in restaurants and catering in the Collingwood area. The Bennington’s are also proud that their adult children Courtney and Kyle are also on staff helping to carry on their success. When they built the restaurant, Kevin and Catherine’s friends and associates said their concept would never fly. But the naysayers were proven wrong by the enormous success of Beaver and Bulldog. The quintessential Canadian Beaver has blended recipes and designs with the loyal British Bulldog together in a splendid selection of signature flavours and Canadian favourites. With his personal touch and abundance of passion, Chef Mike Schut creates world famous fresh jumbo buffalo wings (over 20 flavours!), fresh fish, Canadian Beef and many other fresh market selections all seasoned to perfection. Stop in to Beaver and Bulldog for tantalizing pub fare with an upscale flair, fabulous drinks and memorable times. Written and photographed by Bryan Davies

Ceiling fans are an important part of creating the perfect home decor. In the last 10 years ceiling fans have become more technologically advanced, providing cooling in the summer months and warming in the winter months to save on your energy bill drastically.
Ceiling Fans
The use of indoor ceiling fans can reduce prices on your energy costs up to 40% in the summer and 10% in the winter, using only as much energy as a 100 watt light bulb. During the summer ceiling fans create a “cooling effect”, lowering temperatures as much as 7 degrees, and recirculate the heat in the winter to the living area. Ceiling fans are being used now not only in the main rooms of homes but also in kitchens and bathrooms where dampness may be an issue. This is a place where individuals can coexist in a beautiful location both inside the offices and outside in the community at large. It is appealing to a wide range of entrepreneurs, professionals, remote employees & start-up companies as it provides the opportunity to be surrounded by intelligent, goal-oriented, ambitious people, that along with all of the amenities of a large corporate office at a fraction of the cost, make it the ideal place to work. The office is owned and operated by Rhea Burns and Stefanie McManus. They are a Baby Boomer and Y Generation, Mother/ Daughter Team. Their complimentary mix of experience, skills, and attitudes have a wide customer appeal.

Living an independant life, everyday On June 6th, Independent Living Canada celebrated its national day by showcasing Canadians living with a disability who are using their abilities to be active contributors to today’s world. Breaking Down Barriers in Collingwood hosted a luncheon and award ceremony. Focusing on the abilities rather than the disability of a person creates equal opportunities and unlocks untapped potential. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
The Clever Office
Started in March 2015, Rhea and Stefanie worked from home and at clients’ homes and offices. They saw a need for a space that would benefit those who work from home in isolation or in noisy coffee shops. The Clever Office was the solution. It is a space where the combined skill sets of the individuals and businesses within the space are available to all entrepreneurs. Rhea and Stefanie are the skilled administration team that entrepreneurs turn to, from their comprehensive phone answering service, or sending/ receiving couriers, to researching projects and helping to manage your calendar. The spaces can be rented by the day, week, month, or permanently, with other options to suit a variety of budgets such as flex offices, or just a mailbox for those that want to have a professional address. There is enough space and equipment available to host many types of meetings and events. “We are extremely flexible in terms of the people, businesses and agencies we are able work with. It is our pleasure to host various organizations in our space. There have been plentiful opportunities to collaborate with so many different people” states Rhea. Whatever the circumstances, we all experience turbulence in life. Rhea and Stefanie made choices to make their lives richer and fuller, to surround themselves with wonderful people, and to work with others to create happier lives so that they and others flourish. For both Rhea and Stefanie, it feels like magic at The Clever Office. Rhea and Stefanie are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished. They were nominated for five Collingwood Chamber of Commerce 2016 awards and received the Customer Experience Award. Drop in to see what they can do for you and your business! BUSINESS PROFILE
AM Roofing Solutions
AM Roofing Solutions specializes in all types of roofing systems, including Flat Roofing, Shingles, Cedar, Steel, Composites, Insulation, Eavestrough, Soffit and Facia. They also perform Roof Inspections and Assessments for property management firms and building owners. AM Roofing Solutions has been in operation since 1956 and is a 3rd generation family business. Over that time they have seen changes in materials and methods but maintain their original commitment to providing high quality results for clients. The Simcoe Bluewater location of AM Roofing was founded by Tim Demers and Roger and Melanie Haviland in 2011. With the success of their Owen Sound and Guelph locations it made good business sense to enter the Collingwood-Muskoka market.

Tim Demers and his team chose their current location because Collingwood is a beautiful and inspiring place to live and work. They are grateful to be part of this wonderful community.
390 First Street Collingwood (705) 443-8776
311 Main Street Wasaga Beach (705) 429-8646
AM Roofing has gained a lot of experience working with some of the best property management companies and builders in the area. This has given them a great jumpstart to their growth and success. A big part of their success is having the best team in the business, from installers, to the sales team, and their office team. AM Roofing employs over 20 people year-round. Tim says: “They are the most dedicated people I have had the pleasure to work with.” AM Roofing only hires skilled tradespeople who are certified and are regularly educated on installation methods and new materials. They maintain a meticulous cleanup policy on every job site, and have insurance and WSIB Coverage. A typical day at AM Roofing starts with the Production Manager having a morning meeting with the Crew to discuss Job Details, Safety and then load materials for the current job. Tim would be on the road mostly meeting with potential customers, assessing roofs, doing site inspections or meeting with builders. Tim started in the business as a roofer. When the founder of AM Roofing Roger Haviland took Tim under his wing , he gave him the opportunity to grow from the ground up and learn a lot about work ethics. In an industry that sometimes lacks honesty and professionalism, Tim was inspired by Roger to change the image and the way people look at the Roofing Industry. Tim Demers’ passion for his business stems from the faith and wisdom that was given to him to make AM Roofing the best company in the business and the best company to work with. The Blue Mountain Village Foundation is pleased to announce that Georgian Bay Secondary School will be funded $7,000 towards the Pursuits Program. The program focuses on leadership skills through various activities and events. Pursuits students teach and assist in the classrooms of local schools while integrating what they’ve learned in the program. They promote fitness, healthy nutrition and active living in the outdoors. “We are thrilled with the calibre of the successful applicants for funding various community based programs for youth” says Andrew Seigwart, President of the Foundation. “Pursuits is an ideal recipient given its focus on promoting leadership skills in our youth.”
“With increasing pressure to achieve and succeed, the stress of keeping balance in life can be very challenging for today’s youth. Pursuits delivers strategies to achieve, to reach beyond what youth think they are capable of and understand the importance of maintaining balance in life while gaining confidence and leadership skills. The support from the Blue Mountain Village Foundation allows us to continue to offer this alternative education program in our public education system.” says Mr. Fletcher. The Blue Mountain Village Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our local communities through its financial support of registered charitable organizations whose activities provide benefit to the residents of our local communities, with an emphasis on children and family programs. In addition, the Foundation awards 5 Bob Comish Memorial Scholarships to 4 local high school students and a student from Georgian College, who have worked on the resort property. “Fly in” for a fantastic event
EDITORIAL
Mark your calendars - this years Gathering of the Classics will take place on Saturday, August 6th (rain date August 7th) at the Edenvale Aerodrome. Once again, it promises to be an amazing event for all! Photos submitted from past events by: Larry Quinton
Outdoor fitness training allows you to kill a few birds with one stone. You get to enjoy the outdoors, explore a new place and fill up your workout schedule all at once. Exercising outside adds interest to the workout experience at little to no cost, but does have some obstacles.
Gym vs Outdoor Fitness Training
Outdoor Fitness Training - The list of exercises your can do outside is a bit shorter than what you can accomplish at a typical gym, but can still prove immensely beneficial. Look to Nordic walking, running, climbing, swimming, paddle boarding, cycling and rock climbing, all actiivities you can do in the area. Many runners prefer the outdoors to a treadmill, as the constantly changing backdrop fights boredom and offers hillier courses. If you’re new in town, a long running route gives you a chance to really explore and understand your surroundings. Rock climbing gives an intense upper body workout and allows you to visit a place you typically would not. Swimming and paddle boarding also work your core and arms and immerse you in the height of summertime or warm weather activities. As with any activity involving the great outdoors, you’re limited by the seasons and weather if you defer to outdoor fitness training. Not many people want to exercise outdoors during the winter months, so they turn to the gym then. The limited daylight in these months also prevents people from outdoor workouts, as it is often dark by the time they just get home from work. Outdoor fitness activities like swimming and paddle boarding are out of the question in our region for many months of the year. Gym Fitness Training - Most gyms offer the opportunity to do all the forms of exercise listed above, and more. The benefits of many gyms lie in the abundance of fitness classes and tailored training they offer, from yoga and pilates, to strength and cardio classes. Often you can do a few of these forms of exercise in single visit to the gym. If you are easily bored with one type of cardio, you can switch from the treadmill to the elliptical machine to a recumbent bike within one workout. The bulk of most weighlifting equipment is found in the gym, so those looking to build muscle might be more drawn to a gym. The gym is lacking the fresh air and varied background, but it does offer the ability to exercise when the environment is not co-operating. It provides a safe alternative to exercising in the dark, or if you can’t tolerate the cold or rain (or snow!). Either way getting into shape means moving. Balance your workout with indoor and outdoor training to get the most of your workouts. Funds raised to help solve and prevent crime The Crime Stoppers third annual fundraiser was held at Boston Pizza in Wasaga Beach on June 6th. It was a sell out with more than 100 attending to support this great organization. A delicious meal was prepared and donated by Boston Pizza. Thanks to the many donated prizes, draws were held throughout the evening with the final draw being for the cool Pedego City Commuter electric bike valued at $3,500. Mayor Brian Smith pulled the winning ticket of James Coulombe from Elmvale. He bought the winning ticket from Crime Stoppers volunteers at the Superstore in Wasaga Beach.
