Travel the quiet country roads of the Blue Mountains Apple Pie Trail to enjoy the sweet aroma of blossoms in the spring. It’s a special place where the moderating effects of Georgian Bay and the Niagara Escarpment create perfect conditions for growing amazing apples.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Selena Blais
Well things are looking a lot greener these days! I am welcoming spring with open arms! I never thought I would be so happy to clean the car, rake the leaves and get digging. The month of May is jam-packed with lots of events to get you out! It is a great time to enjoy the areas beautiful hiking and biking trails, beaches and parks, when tourist attractions are quieter and you can spend time enjoying the mild weather and longer days. Spring is especially beautiful when the trees and spring flowers are in bloom. Most people will certainly celebrate Victoria Day (aka May 2-4 weekend) with an extra day off work. This marks the start of summer and people will be flocking to our area from near and far to open up their cabins and cottages, and locals will break soil and get their flower and vegetable gardens in full swing. If the great outdoors isn’t exactly your thing (or you need somewhere to kick up those feet after a long day outside) be sure to take in some of the things that our communites are proud to offer. Visit heritage downtowns to experience the art galleries, theatre, music and culinary delights. Shopping locally keeps communities strong, unique and prosperous. When you choose a local business, the money stays in your community and those businesses are more likely to support local events, teams & charities. Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service. Enjoy this issue and I will see you out there!

BUSINESS PROFILE Collingwood Olive Oil Company Beginnings: Husband and wife team, Alex Yuen and Cheryl McMenemy, opened the doors of The Collingwood Olive Oil Company in May of 2014. Creatively renovating a tired heritage home, they crafted a beautiful location where they could dispense the freshest extra virgin oils from around the world and an impressive selection of all natural, gluten-free balsamic vinegars. The pair adopted two key beliefs into their business concept: That a customer should be able to taste everything before they take it home, and that education is critical for recurring business. This combination lead to one of the finest and most enjoyable features of their store: The Tasting Tour. Every customer that walks through the door is greeted by a friendly and highly trained employee, who guides them through olive oil chemistry, handling and health properties. Additionally, customers are encouraged to taste anything of interest! It is not surprising that in just two years, the combination of Cheryl’s marketing strength and Alex’s exceptionally discerning taste as a chef with over 25 years in the industry, Collingwood Olive Oil Company boasts numerous awards. These include Small Business Owners of the Year (Collingwood Chamber of Commerce), Innovative Business of the Year (Collingwood Chamber of Commerce), Metroland Reader’s Choice: Favourite New Business, #1 Retail Shopping in Collingwood on Trip Advisor, and a growing registered customer loyalty membership in excess of 4,300. Why Collingwood? Both Alex and Cheryl prefer the small town feel, and both are foodies who delight in patronizing the extraordinarily high number of ‘independently’ owned (not chain stores) restaurants and cafes serviced by entrepreneurial chefs using local products. Their own unique products were seen as a perfect fit for Collingwood’s growing food movement, and of course, the lifestyle they enjoy in this community is hard to match! Looking to the Future: Together, they pride themselves on actively participating in growing the continued success of Collingwood through Cheryl’s participation as a Board member of the Georgian Triangle Tourism Association, and Alex’s standing on the Board of Management for the Collingwood Business Improvement Association. Supporting many local charities, fundraising and not-for-profit groups keeps them connected to the community. As to the future of the Collingwood Olive Oil Company, Cheryl says the key is to be consistent and they plan to keep growing and expanding on what they have already shown is a successful recipe! To find out more visit www.collingwoodoliveoil.ca Advice for Retailers: Cheryl and Alex both have longstanding business careers but neither of them in retail so the entire process has been a bit of a learning curve; from stock management to cash flow to store displays. Their advice for any small business is to not look for staff like yourself but rather look for individuals with strengths where you have weaknesses. It is the sum of all parts that completes the team. Best Retail Tale: Cheryl & Alex love when their regular customers bring visiting family and friends into their shop to “show them off.” A customer physically bringing another customer certainly trumps word of mouth! They never tire of welcoming a reluctant spouse dragged into the shop to have them leave a convert and complete fan! Written by Cheryl McMenemy and Photographed by Bryan Davies

To transition from renter to homeowner is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in your lifetime. It can also be a stressful experience if you don’t plan ahead by building a budget and saving prior to embarking upon home ownership. Budgeting is a core ingredient that helps alleviate the stress associated with money issues that can sometimes arise if you purchase a home without knowing all of the associated costs – including down payment, closing expenses, ongoing maintenance, taxes and utilities. The trouble is, many first-time homeowners fail to carefully think about their finances, plan a budget or set savings aside. The key is to create a realistic budget based on your goals. Track your spending and make your dollars go further by sticking to your budget once it’s in place. Budgeting offers a stepby-step formula for figuring out how to best save your hard-earned money to invest in home ownership. Start by listing your household income, then your household expenses, and review your spending habits. All of this can be done on a pad of paper or on a computer spreadsheet. Keeping receipts for everything that you purchase will enable you to accurately keep track of where your money is going each month, so that you can review and make necessary changes to your plan on an ongoing basis.

Examine all areas of your life from entertainment to the type of food you buy, where you buy your food and clothes, and how and where you travel. Also look at your spending personality and make necessary adjustments. Are you a saver, a splurger, a spontaneous shopper or a hoarder? Become smarter with your money and avoid impulse buying. If you find you’re spending a lot of money in one area, such as entertainment for instance, set aside a reasonable amount each month and prepare to stop spending money in this area once your budget has been exhausted. Budgeting provides you with the opportunity to re-evaluate your needs and wants. If you can set your budget solidly in place before you head out home or mortgage shopping, you will be far more prepared to purchase your first home. Following are three top tips to help you prepare for the purchase of your first home: 1. Set up a savings account. You can deposit a predetermined amount into this account each pay period that you will not touch unless it’s absolutely necessary. This will enable you to put money aside for a down payment and cover closing costs, as well as address ongoing home ownership expenses such as maintenance, taxes and utilities. 2. Save up for big-ticket items. As you accumulate money in your savings account, you will be able to also save for specific purchases to help furnish your home – avoiding the buy now, pay later mentality, which can have a negative impact on your credit when you’re seeking mortgage financing. 3. Surround yourself with a team of professionals. When you’re getting ready to make your first home purchase, enlist the services of a licensed mortgage professional and a real estate agent. These experts are invaluable to you as you set out on the road to home ownership because they help first-time buyers through the home purchase and financing processes every day. They will be able to answer all of your questions and set your mind at ease. A mortgage professional has access to multiple lenders, and can help you get pre-approved for a mortgage so you know exactly what you can afford to spend on a home before you head out house hunting, while a real estate agent will be able to match your needs with a house you can afford. Both parties will negotiate on your behalf to ensure you get the best bang for your buck. And, best of all, these services are typically free. They will also be able to refer you to other reputable professionals you may need for your home purchase, including a real estate lawyer and home appraiser. Intuition - The Inward Journey! We are living at a time that has seen a quantum leap in the field of human consciousness - a time when our interior sense of self is radically changing. We are being invited to look at life intuitively - to trust in chaos beyond logic and to become partners with spirit for a truly extraordinary life. This acceleration in consciousness began in the 1960s, when the intuitive capacity of humanity was unlocked in a great ‘download of perception.’ In this decade we developed a passion for freedom from longstanding narrow perceptions that limited our exploration of ourselves. We said “no more” to social rituals, cultural and religious beliefs, and our readiness to explore that which is coming from within. When we use the skills of medical intuition, this is exactly where we go - within - for the higher intelligence resides in our heart. Concepts like intuitive energy, intuitive language, channeling, being in rapport with non-physical teachers, our guides/angels, and so on began to surface in the mainstream in the 1970’s, and in the 1980’s we moved to evolution, and began to realize the power of our thoughts and emotions and their effect on our biology - thus the Mind/Body connection. Intuition is an innate capability, specific for each individual and serving as a guide, counselor and informer. It is an abstract quality of mind programmed from a higher level of consciousness. It is a segment of a universal mind from which all
knowing and physical manifestations are derived. Each and all of our bodily cells and systems respond to this direction with intelligence. Just as in developing any skill, daily practice and training are needed to work with this intelligence and master the tools of medical intuition. Although medical intuition did not exist as a formal course of study until some time after the revolutionary period of the 1960s, intuition itself is as old as humanity. In the days of the ancient Greeks, there was an organized system of oracles that were looked to for hidden insights and guidance. Later in the Judeo-Christian tradition, prophets were believed to be the medium for higher knowledge. And to this day, in indigenous cultures, we can find the role of the shaman or medicine man or woman as the conduit for intuitive information. It wasn’t until the 18th century that we saw the introduction of intuition to the medical field, with the work of Anton Mesmer (1733-1815), Mesmer was one of the first to use hypnosis in his practice, and is considered by many to be the father of modern psychotherapy. More importantly, Carl Jung (1875-1961) has been considered by many as the greatest Psychiatrist of all time. Jung is noted, among others things, for his contribution of the concept of synchronicity to the study of intuition. ** Do not let your fear of change stop you from celebrating and embracing The New Way of perceiving the many scientific mysteries of the Universe!

Dressed in all kinds of colourful outfits they jumped, cannon-balled or anxiously slid into the water assisted by emergency personnel from the Collingwood Fire Department. Thanks and congratulations Meridian, sponsors and of course all the frigid fanatics who participated in this wonderful fundraiser. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography

BUSINESS PROFILE Brian McMillan - Team Approach Planning Brian A. McMillan CFP, CLU, CH.F.C, EPC, is a Life Transition Financial Advisor and owner of Team Approach Planning in Collingwood. Though it may sound ironic he and his team believe that financial planning is more than talking about money. It’s really about people, their relationships and understanding what they value most. Holistic financial planning offers solutions to meet client’s goals and objectives in all areas of their lives. Family, financial, spiritual, health and well-being, just to mention a few. Like his company name reveals, Team Approach Planning, Brian uses a team-oriented approach to plan for your family or business. And because of their collaborative perspective, Brian and his team work with other industry experts. Together, they tackle the full spectrum of financial planning initiatives. The plan design may call for increased cash flow, reducing debt and taxes. It’s not about how much money you make… it’s about how much you keep after paying your taxes. Developing a tax efficient predictable income stream in retirement is the essence of a worry free retirement. Brian specializes in helping people adjust for what life can throw at them. ”Transitions in life happen all the time... some are good like having a baby, getting married, getting your first job out of school or maybe just buying your first home. Some transitions in life are bad... like divorce, death or disability of a loved one or losing your job. Having a plan in place gives people peace of mind and a sense of control. Brian and his team help people make informed decisions, it may be on their life insurance purchases, developing tax efficient retirement income, getting their will in order or simply just helping them understand the importance of having a power of attorney before meeting with their other professional advisors. Brian suggests “financial planning is like putting together a picture puzzle”. Most would agree that without the picture on the box, it would take a much longer to put it all together. After getting a sense of what you might like your picture to look like, Brian and his team help you fit the pieces of your financial picture. As an experienced “Puzzle Builder” Brian starts by counting the pieces. Do you know how frustrating it would be to build a three hundred piece puzzle to find out you are missing three pieces? After more than 25 years of being in the financial services business, Brian can relate to most situations and the best possible solutions. He and his team can even stress-test your current plan. Have you ever considered doing that before? When he isn’t helping customers plan their finances, Brian is known to express his creativeness in watercolour as a locally recognized and celebrated artist. His paintings often depict people, landscapes, and water, which have been featured in places such as the Rotary of South Georgian Bay calendar and the walls of Team Approach Planning. The office is more like an art gallery than a financial planning office. “Situations happen every day in life and are fun to capture and paint” says Brian. His true passion for painting, coupled with his friendly and caring personality have all been catalysts in triggering the demand for his work. He sells his impressive paintings as well as limited edition cards of them, with the proceeds going to support Brian’s charitable and mission activities some of which include, First Presbyterian Church initiatives, mission work involving youth, African mission, The Door, Youth for Christ, supporting mission awareness, fundraising for Cancer research and more. If you are looking for a team that cares more about you than your money, Team Approach Planning is a great team with great results, focused on you and your family. If you are celebrating a special occasion and want to purchase a personalized gift for that special someone, contact Brian and he will gladly create your watercolour masterpiece. Spring is here!
GET YOUR HOME & PROPERTY in TIP TOP SHAPE Growing Herbs Growing culinary herbs combines the beauty and fragrance of flowers with the functional use of plants as food. Culinary herbs can be shrubs, bushes, climbers, annuals or perennials. They can be grown in small gardens, in plots with distinctive visual design, in containers or in some cases as field crops. Herbs also make very functional borders. Because there are so many different herbs, the location of the herb garden itself will depend upon the particular plants you grow. If the garden is to be strictly functional, place it close to the kitchen. If grown mainly for ornamental or fragrance purposes, the many textures and hues, foliage shades, and flower colours warrant the placing of the garden in a more conspicuous spot. Herbs can also be used as specimen plants in patio planters, in hanging baskets, or as winter houseplants.

Sara
Everyone please welcome sweet, petite, Sara. Sara comes to us from a home that unfortunately did not have much time for her in their busy lives :(. Thankfully though, they did the best possible thing for Sara by bringing her here to the GTHS and giving her the best chance at finding her perfect forever home! Sara has not had much exposure to the big big world and is quite shy and wary when facing new things at first, but! She is very inquisitive tries hard to push through her fears with each situation she faced with! Sara would do best in a home with no other dogs as she is not fond of sharing her attention with other canines. She would however, do well with felines in the home as she has lived with them in the past :). If you think you are the calm but active single or couple home that can provide the guidance, patience and love for our lovely little girl, please give us a call to book a meet and greet. We can be reached at (705) 445-5204 ext. 229 or dogadoptions@gths.ca! We hope to hear from you soon!!
Princess
Let me bless you with my royal presence! If you haven’t already guessed, my name is Princess! I’m sure you have heard of me before as I am The Georgian Triangle Humane Society’s LONGEST TERM RESIDENT! I came here to the amazing GTHS on June 10th, 2015 because my owner had moved and left me behind, I don’t know why my owner forgot me but I am happy I am safe. I was named Princess for a reason as I crave the royal treatment and would be best suited in a quiet, calm home with loving parents, no children, no other cats, and no dogs. I am 3 years and 11 months old with a lot of life left in me to hopefully spend with you. Deep in my heart I know I could be a loving pet to anyone quiet and peaceful who would just give me the chance to warm up and get to know them. Could that be you!? Please visit me soon in GTHS’s front cat room any day between 12pm-4pm, or email catadoptions@gths.ca. Royally yours, Princess xoxoxo Please note: these animals were available at the time we went to print. If you think that they might be the perfect forever friends, please call 705-445-5204 or send an email to info@gths.ca and set up a time for you to meet and get to know one another.

BUSINESS PROFILE The Georgian Bay Golf Academy Cameron Burechails golfing career started at the age of 6 in Guelph. He played golf at the Victoria Park course and then at 10 he had his first job at the Cutten Club as a clubwasher, bagboy and weekend caddie. Cameron has been fortunate to have worked in an industry that has been his passion for over 35 years. After graduating from the University of Guelph with a Bachelor of Commerce in Hotel and Resort Management, he moved to Kitchener to become the Assistant General Manager at Westmount Golf & Country Club. Gus Maue was the head professional at the club and encouraged Cameron to not only work on his game but also to pursue career goals in the golf industry. Moe Norman, who was a good friend of the Maue family, also played at Westmount. Cameron had the amazing opportunity to witness first hand one of the ”greatest ball strikers” to ever play the game. Moe was a genius and every chance Cameron got, he watched, listened and learned from him. Opportunities opened up in Thornhill where Cameron took on a new position as the Clubhouse Manager at Bayview Golf & Country Club. Warren Crosbie was the head golf Professional at Bayview, and like Gus, took Cameron under his wing and helped him develop his game knowing that he had dreams of becoming a golf teaching professional. In 1989, Cameron and his family moved north to Collingwood to pursue an opportunity with Blue Mountain Resorts. While at the resort Cameron met Steve Young who had just opened up a new practice range and looking for an instructor to teach at the range. Cameron taught at Tees Please for 2 seasons and was then approached by Monterra to become their new Golf School Director. The golf school operated successfully for several seasons, until the practice range was closed to make room for the new village. In 2000, Cameron decided that it was time to start his own golf academy aimed at servicing the needs of public golfers in the Georgian Bay area. After receiving his professional teaching certification he approached several local clubs that were in need of instructors. Cranberry Resort and Duntroon Highlands were two of the first clubs that the Academy worked with. The Meaford Golf Club became the third club to request the services of the Georgian Bay Golf Academy in 2001. Sixteen years later, Cameron continues to service his many clients from Collingwood to Meaford. When asked what made him decide to become a professional instructor he states “For me, it is knowing that I can make a difference in other peoples’ games. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and years of expertise with other players and I love watching my clients develop not only their skills, but also their love for the game.” Cameron also shares his love of golf through his weekly columns in The Enterprise Bulletin, The Thornbury Paper, and The Meaford Independent. Cameron Burechails is the Teaching Professional at the Georgian Bay Golf Academy. The Academy operates out of Duntroon Highlands Golf Club as well as the Meaford Golf & Country Club. Most things that are worth doing, take work and diligence. The overnight success seldom is. Here are a few tips to get you through challenging times: • Be tenacious – Just keep moving. Everyday take one small step. Thinking about it does not count, writing it down does and is the beginning of a plan. • Be flexible - re-adjust your course when you need to, even airplanes routinely go off track on the way to their destination. • Believe – in yourself and develop your mindset. Good things are far more likely to happen from thinking good thoughts. • Support yourself – and select the ones who travel beside you with care. Pushing yourself beyond reasonable limits on a daily basis is not strategic. Life happens to all of us. The good, the bad, and the ugly are all part of the human journey. Grab on, keep going, breathe into each challenge and find the foothold for your next adventure. Adversity has many faces, relationships end and jobs finish. If it is not working, it may mean the road is ending and time for a new course. Many of us think that to quit is to fail, as if giving up is a destination. It is in fact a turning point. Inside each of us is our own inner compass that resets and guides us along our path. Seek the solace and advice from the ones who have travelled the path before you, the ones who did not quit when the wind was blowing against them. When giving up is not an option, remember that this too shall pass. For a free consultation contact Jane Schnurr at 705-444-5338 or visit www.awesomecoaching.com. BUSINESS PROFILE The Law Firm of Ted Yoannou, Professional Corporation TorontoCriminalLawyers.Com Criminal Law, Traffic Offences Record Suspensions (Pardons) USA Waivers Police Fingerprint and Photo Destruction Even though Ted Yoannou was born and raised in Toronto, a big part of his heart resides in the Wasaga Beach and Collingwood area. Ted has spent every summer of his life in Wasaga Beach and many weekends year round on the hiking and ski trails of Collingwood, Barrie and Wasaga. It’s where he learned to swim, ski and ride a bike as a young child, where he spent countless hours with his friends and family on the beach and in the local establishments as a teenager and young adult, where he proposed to his wife, where they have taught their kids to swim, ski, ride a bike, where their kids are now discovering for themselves the great social life Simcoe County offers - the cycle just keeps on continuing! Ted and his family have been active members of the community, both recreationally and as business owners. They owned and operated the Wasaga Waterworld waterparks in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, earning recognition as one of the outstanding enterprises in the area, as well as the Bayfront Beach Resort and Greenbank Financial. As a lawyer, Ted has been practicing exclusively in the areas of criminal law and traffic offences since 1993. He worked with a large Bay Street firm, McCarthy Tetrault and a small community based legal clinic, Justice For Children and Youth, before starting his own practice. Since then, he has successfully represented thousands of clients across Southern Ontario who have faced a variety of charges, ranging from DUI and other driving related offences to Assaults, Drugs, Thefts and virtually every type of offence in Canada’s Criminal Code and Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act. Today, Ted’s small firm includes a number of experienced and highly successful lawyers and licensed paralegals. They recognize the emotional and financial stress that criminal or serious traffic charges cause their clients and they help navigate the clients through the complex process from start to finish. Professional, compassionate and friendly service, effective communications, reasonable fees and affordable payment plans are the foundation of Ted’s commitment to his clients. The head office is located in Toronto and they have recently opened a new office in Collingwood’s Admiral Building on First Street, to better serve their growing Simcoe County clientele. Ted offers free consultations in person or over the phone and his office provides excellent representation for all criminal law charges and serious traffic offences, as well as assistance in obtaining a Record Suspension (Pardon), USA Waiver and the Destruction of Police Fingerprint and Photograph Records. If you require this kind of assistance, call or email Ted right away. Written by: Selena Blais

Wasaga: this is how we say cheers! The Wasaga Beach Brewing Company presented the Beach 1 Cerveza First Pour Taste Test at the now renovated Marlwood Golf and Country Club on April 22nd. Mayor Brian Smith did the honours of the First Pour from the tap. Beach 1 is where sun and sand lovers cruise to see and be seen. When it gets a little hot, grab a Beach 1 Cerveza. It’s a smooth light beer with pleasant malt and hop notes and a round dry finish. Photos/Story: Enrique Miranda

Children’s art … simply magical The Magic of Children in the Arts was founded in 1994 by local artist Lory MacDonald. With the help of parents and volunteers, it evolved into an annual event at the Collingwood Public Library. This year marked the 22nd year of their mission to inspire and encourage children to create, exhibit and celebrate art. The result is a spectacular display of over 1000 artworks (now considered the largest art show of it’s kind in Canada) created by children from the community. Congratulations to Lory, the wonderful volunteers and of course those talented young artists for 22 years of amazingly creative art! Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
Atom BB Blackhawks at the OMHA Championship The Collingwood Hanna Motors Atom BB Blackhawks finished their year with a win against St. Mary’s Rock to win the Ontario Minor Hockey Association Championship (OMHA). The team went through the OMHA’s with a record of 12 wins, 2 losses and a tie. Before capturing the finals, the Blackhawks won the GBMHA playoffs going undefeated in the round robin and then the final series against Elmvale. During the season the Atom “BB” team entered and won three higher ranked “A” tournaments, the Nobleking Challenge, The Guelph Power Play and The Huronia tournament. The team came close to a fourth win, losing to Barrie in the finals of the Regional Silver Stick. Barrie lost in the International Silverstick Finals. With an overall record of 56-7-3, the team bounced back with a win after every loss, and the kids showed great heart and determination throughout the year. Thank you to all the parents, siblings, grandparents and fans who supported the team all year. A special thanks to our individual sponsors. Submitted by: Rob Holroyd

BUSINESS PROFILE Blue Mountain Vacuum Centre For over three decades, Blue Mountain Vacuum Centre has been providing reliable vacuum products and invaluable advice in Collingwood and surrounding areas. The current owners Meghan and Andrew Berofsky purchased the business in May 2011 from the couple who successfully operated it for over thirty years. Meghan’s parents moved to Collingwood about seven years prior and enjoyed many weekends visiting them. Andrew and Meghan came to enjoy the community and they thought it would be a great change of scenery to move here. They love the small town feel and now that they are raising their son Cole it is great to have the support from their family close-by.
Meaford awards its citizens The annual Meaford Community Awards night was held April 9th at the Meaford and St. Vincent Community Centre. Brian and Susan Adamson were the big winners, as the couple were named the Rotary Citizens of the year by the Meaford Rotary Club. The Rotary Club also handed a new award to a junior citizen of the year, naming Haley Fawcett as its first recipient. “Her excellent work ethic, attitude and diligence have ensured her respect by other team members,” Brunner said. Nancy Ellis, who operates Simply Unique Flowers and Gifts, was called to the stage later to be named Business Owner of the Year. Albert McLean, from the Irish Block area, was named the first “Farmer of the Year” recipient by Earth Power Tractors and Equipment. E & R Bulk Barn was named the Most Improved Business of the Year. The Tourism Award went to the Meaford International Film Festival, which is adding four themed dinners to its event list this year. The Customer Service Award went to HomeBUTTONS, operated by Bill and Judy Monahan. Photos/Story: TS Giilck
Blue Mountain Vacuum Centre sells mid to high-end residential and commercial vacuum cleaners. Their most popular residential brands are Miele and Dyson. They also sell and install built-in central vacuum systems and provide warranty work and repairs to all of the vacuums and systems that they sell. The couple has worked hard to grow their business through establishing relationships with local resorts and hotels, as well as custom homebuilders. When Andrew and Meghan had an opportunity to purchase their own storefront, they wanted to make sure they stayed in the downtown area so it would be easy for their customers to locate them. During a typical day Andrew and Meghan answer questions regarding their vacuums, recommending the best vacuum based on a customers’ needs and circumstances, repairing vacuums, and roughing-in and installing central vacuum systems. The couple are active in several business organizations as members of the Georgian Triangle BNI, the Downtown BIA and the Collingwood Chamber of Commerce. They both credit their family for playing an essential role in both making them who they are, and getting the business to where it is today. Andrew and Meghan are most proud when a customer tells them how happy they are with a repair or new vacuum because of the advice they gave. Spring into cleaning and head into their new bright and fresh store to see the deals they have on canister, upright, and central vacuum systems. Andrew and Meghan take pride in great customer service, honesty, and integrity. Blue Mountain Vacuum Centre, “Your One Stop Vac Shop”. Written and photographed by Bryan Davies

HOW DOES OUR COMMISSION STRUCTURE WORK? Firstly the MLS® system is designed to split the commission between the Selling Brokerage and the Buyers Brokerage. The industry standard in Ontario is currently 5%. With 25+ years of buying and selling experience we find that listing and marketing a property is fairly simple, albeit expensive. We feel that the REALTOR® that represents the Buyer pounds the pavement and does most of the work, therefore the largest percentage of the commission should go to him or her. We recommend paying the Buyers Brokerage 2.5% bringing our total commission fee to 3.5% (+HST) of the agreed upon sale price which is deducted at the time of closing, SAVING YOU A TOTAL OF 1.5% + HST. The listing REALTOR® absorbs most of the cost and must pay for all print media advertising, signs, web sites, hosting fees, board memberships, annual licensing fees, insurance, professional photography and any other costs that may arise from marketing endeavours. Our mandate is to offer 110% service and to sell volume as opposed to less real estate for more commission. Simply put, WE WORK HARDER FOR LESS TO SAVE YOU MORE! Volunteers make good things happen The BVO (Beaver Valley Outreach) held their Volunteer Appreciation Party in Thornbury on April 15th. There was a delicious brunch, lots of socializing and even a choir was formed to sing “Summer of 69”. Thank you for having the Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH there to capture some fun! Volunteers are the heart of BVO, the roots that make our community strong. The hard work of our volunteers allows BVO to provide many programs, services and events to individuals and families in the community. The success and growth of our organization is largely dependent upon their wisdom, talents, skills, dedication and direction. BVO has more than 200 people who give their time to help the community in many different areas: serving breakfast at BVCS Breakfast Club, sorting and pricing donations at the Treasure Shop, caring for children and doing activities at Preschool and Kids Club, delivering groceries and driving people to medical and dental appointments, organizing fresh produce for the Good Food Box program, providing support and information for seniors and their caregivers through Answers4Seniors, stocking shelves in the Food Bank, participating in community events such as Easter Eggstravaganza and the Thanksgiving Community Dinner, preparing Christmas Hampers, and serving on the Board and various Committees to help dream and plan for the present and future of BVO. Without our volunteers, there would be no Beaver Valley Outreach. Thank you BVO volunteers for “making good things happen in our community!” Photos: Selena Blais/Georgian Life PHOTO•BOOTH | Story: Melri Wright
Funds needed for ER Department Renovation On April 13th the Collingwood General and Marine Hospital launched a fundraising campaign to renovate the hospital’s emergency department. The hospital is hoping to raise $1M to pay for the project. The goal is to declutter and reorganize the department, improve safety, efficiency and to overhaul the trauma room and areas where patients are assessed. Approximately 35,000 patients visit the emergency department every year. The fundraising campaign kicked off with a $60,000 donation from Walker Aggregates. The hospital plans to begin the work in September 2016 with construction expected to last 6 months. Photos/Story: Dave West Photography
