S E LWYN KU S U M A
This opportunity allowed me to discover more about myself as an artist and designer, my visions and creative thinking in architecture; finding myself in a vast major industry that separates artists architects among others. Architects and designers like Le Corbusier, Tadao Ando, Louis Kahn, Steven Holl, Daniel Libeskind, and James Turell whom are masters of spatial and architecture creativity, had always been an inspiration that guided me through my projects.

Being able to proudly present my works to the industry as the Best of Best in Diploma (2019) & Bachelor (2020) Project Exhibition and accumulate respectful awards from SILA for GOLD & Bronze. Showcasing my projects in NAFA Open House in 2018 and Exhibitions in 2019, are the stepping stones that I took courageously for a better future career. My participation in competitions like Singapore Gardens Festival in 2018, paved my way through landscape understanding, by working with big industries, teammates, landscape contractors and moreover, had enabled me to showcase my artistic elements towards garden design and exhibited it publicly in Gardens by The Bay for several days.

BEST OF BEST PROJECT (BACHELOR)
Le Grid | NAFA OPEN HOUSE Le grid is a Pocket Park Design which integrates the use of grids on a town plan or a map as its simplest form at the queen street area. Le grid combines both exhibtion and resting area that will also provide users to enjoy the view as it has a built in greenery as a green lung of the region. Using white concrete as the walls of the exhibtion and wood planks as the pathway to create a unity of being natural and being futuristic. The design is made from a 45 degree turn of a rectangular shape, facing diagonally. Landscape of the area is also integrated into a similar concept of diagonal rectangle shapes that overlaps and stay as it is. Arts Exhibition Space
The very first project that introduced me to the world of architecture and landscape design.
EXHIBITION A
FRONT ELEVATION
EXHIBITION B
The Pocket Park consist of 2 ehxibitions area 1 & 2, and small gathering space for users in between exhibitions. In each exhibitions has integrated seatings and plantings for a more vibrant exhibition. The design also uses green roof concept on the gathering space to allow a softer overall design, as well to be the green lung of the area. The design is an air gallery which allows a more open spaces, allowing users to relax and have a beautiful environment view from all angles. Exhibition grids are also facing north, part of its design concept as a compass.
Exhibitions A and B has applied softscape greenery and seatings in the middle of each sections to facilitate user with resting and enjoying the view of gallery. By doing this, the design is trying to achieve an open air gallery design, with trees acting as passive shelter. Exhibition B is larger in space than A, allowing it to have 4 entry and exit points. Keeping and improving the existing circulation flow.
The project uses hand cut materials (Modelling Wood & PVC) acurrately according to the dimensions drawn within CAD. Exploring the use of different materials to create the landscaping effect into the modelling & create the correct ambience and atmosphere of space.
Entwine | Superimposing Spaces Exhibition Entwine is a linear stretch design at the level 5 invisible boundary, that provides diverse reading space programmes and community activities. This space targets the residents, especially the elderlies to promote book reading, proven beneficial for their health mentally and physically, as well create an interaction between residents of two different residential blocks. Entwine space design is derived from the bookmark ribbon concept, where it connects and joins a book, “pausing and resuming the reading at the spot. The design connects directly to the circulation points, where it will lead to a series of different reading programmes such as private reading, sharing experiences, donation of books, etc.
FINAL MODEL / EXHIBITION @ LIM HAK TAI Trees, Humans, Glass figures were all added during the final process after laser cutting models. This touching up process includes building up the surrounding to make it look more realistic and professional, including the addition of the two HDB apartments. The final model was showcased in Lim Hak Tai Gallery at NAFA. This session includes presentation, consultation and opening ceremony to meet other professionals.

Childhood Memories | Singapore Garden Festival 2018 Singapore’s childhood has played important role in developing the current Singapore in such of emotion, character and uniqueness, we wanted to emphasise these points by creating a childhood dream garden that symbolises Singapore’s childhood sensory garden. Using the different senses will stimulate the feeling of a childhood that will evoke emotions in the people’s hearts. We used a variety of different colours and textures to show contrast between species that will excite the eyes. The textures draw us in, asking us to engage with the planting design. Dream concept also has selected plants that will create dreamy illusion and miniature dreamlike spaces. COMPETITION THEME : KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLORS

CONCEPT TO REALITY Several designs and plants changed after consulting nursery, competition judges and within team discussion, to have the best quality as well as deliver an efficient and winner worthy design. This is done due to the time limit given during the competition day to construct the modulars within 4 hours, as part of the challenge. Secondly, budget had been limited to $2000 per team ; important to collaborate with respective nursery towards design approach and checking on nursery’s planting availability. The initial concept is not effeciently designed for the team to carry out the project and costly.

Paradigm | Best of Best (Diploma) Awards Paradigm represents different timelines of past, present and future within the former Kallang airport in attempts to create diverse non stopping movement of civil will’s life. This project envisions to harmonizing and link two different worlds of Humans civilization & Kallang Airport’s memorable history. Paradigm design follows two conceptual attitudes which are, respecting existing heritages and neutral approach towards space possibilities. This translates that the design shall not interfere with the heritage and shall not rival its architecture that exists within the site such as, Kallang Airport Control Tower by Frank Dorrington Ward and two existing Airport Blocks.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT FOLLOWS 2 CONCEPT ATTITUDES : RESPECTING HERITAGES & NEUTRAL APPROACHES TO SPACE POSSIBILITIES. THESE ATTITUDES ALLOW THE DESIGN TO MORE SUBTLE AND NOT INVADING THE IMPORTANCE OF HERITAGE (BUILDING, ITEMS, & LANDSCAPE). THE IDEA IS GREATLY INSPIRED BY ITS MEMORABLE HISTORY THAT IS CRUCIAL AND UNIQUE TO THE SITE, TO TRANSLATE IT INTO DIFFERENT ATMOSPHERE AND SPACE EXPERIENCE AS USERS GO THROUGH THE SITE. PARADIGM EVENTUALLY BREAKS DOWN THESE IDEAS INTO 3 DIFFERENT TIMELINES OF SPACES : PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE, CREATING EXHIBITION AND MEMORIAL PARK.

Fabricating The Ineffable | Best of Best (Bachelor) Awards “Fabricating the ineffable”, the word “Ineffable” means to make sense of the understanding towards something that can not be explained through words, which can be fabricated through personal experiences and feelings. The project is about repressing memories of Fort Canning’s history through the architecture of sensibility: in which surpass the dominance of the eye but engages all the five senses; touch, smell, sound, taste and sight, as a vessel for experience. Therefore, a reactive reaction will be formed by the movements, actions, and perception of the bodies as they enter the space. Centre of the Arts & Culture.

1941 - 1942 Timeline of WW2 against Japanese, ended in just 70 days. It talks about the Chaos & Violence that happened throughout the war. In early December, the bombing started at the centre of Singapore where lots of civilians and the society lost their lives that day and marked the invasion of the japanese forces. the japanese had defeated Malaya by January and moving downwards to cross the bridge towards Singapore from Johor. However, the bridge was eventually blown apart by allied forces. By February, the Japanese took the allied forces off guard by using bikes into the battlefield, capturing higher grounds at Bukit Timah and seizing Ford factory. Massacre of hundreds of Civilians eventually forced British General Arthru precival to surrender from the Battle Box, to the signing in Ford Factory.
CON S E Q U E N C E O F W A R “ B I T T E R V A L U A BLE LESSONS” It doesnt only talk about the Defeat, and the Loss of the war, but how they use it to turn into a better future as part of the Consequence of War “Bitter But Valuable Lesson. Capturing the emotions of war into experiential journey
