Independent practice

Introduction In this project I am aiming to discover about myself in many different way such as Design style, personality and my attitude of art. I am going to do a project of London Landscape. London is my second home since I left home when I was 16 year ago. I miss my home and culture, but I somehow London do make me feel home as there is some similarity between London and Hong Kong such as culture, architect and the art in the city. I will study the artist J.M. William Turner (1775-1851) who was the most famous England Romantic landscape artist as a start point. I am very interested in the science of light and colour; how he painted with watercolour and the lighting used in his art works. Secondly, I will study John Piper (1903-1992) who was a 20th century English painter and printmaker. He has incredible drawing also painting skills, especially loving his use of color such as The Seaton Delavan 1941 (Oil on canvas laid on wood), the castle’s colouring as ‘ochre and flame licked red, pock-marked and stained… incredibly up to date; very much of our times’. Piper also loved to record the major building in his time. I am willing to learn the watercolour and the used of light of Turners’ which is a chromatic palette and broadly applied atmospheric washes of paint and used watercolour technique with oil paints, created lightness, fluency, and ephemeral atmospheric effects. Although there is something similarity painting technique between John Piper and William Turner, But I do like the style of Piper more than Turner such as Piper loved to use rich and deep dark colour and used line drawing to bring out the graphic side of his painting, those style I just adore so much personally. As much as I love about Piper and Tuner’s style but I do find they were little bit out of the date and too fine art for me. I decided to bring in textile into my art works, and mix up Piper and Tuner’s style with sewing technique. All the way throw this journey I have learned that I could used my pencil drawing skill mix with painting technique develop into my own signature textile style. I was struggling to find my way out of design industry, as I break throw it my journey is becoming easier. This journey is not going to end just yet, because I have more and more need to learn and discover more about fine artist’s style and painting technique, try to bring the classic beauty of fine art back into the modern world and introduce it to new audiences.

I used John Piper’s ‘Shell guide to Oxfordshire’ as my start point to begin my journey of London Landscape project. I created the Shell Guide to London that shows the direction to London and top ten popular places in London, also London culture guide.

William Turner

Experiment the use of Watercolour in style of Turner.

I changed my Watercolour Painting into different colour in Photoshop to find out which colour suit my style the best and turn it more likely to my artist’s style. But I dislike the top one and bottom two on the left, because they are too yellow and too dark, feel quite negative in someway.

I print out my painting in different material such as tracing paper, Acrylic Paper, Newspaper, Clear Paper. Then break those images and stick them back together with different materials also added text into it. This experiment allows me to create different size, shape and play around with papers and tryout different way to present my works.

I am using mix texture such as text and sewing into my textile; I put some fabric in between two layers, and then use sewing to stick all then together. Those texts I used about Hong Kong from Italian News Paper, it present that London is a international city that have different nationality people who come from everywhere in the world live in London, we are happy to accept them all and please to learn their culture. I used different color and texture thread because I would like to bring out the stand out point and show my audience what I want them to focus on.

We were collecting any materials that we can found from anywhere such as Rubbish Bin, Dump and Car park etc. Then we need to make an original Letter Font that we got told to. I got a letter P, it made out with lots green such as trunk, leafs, flowers and grass etc. As an item like 5ft. tall is not an easy object to make so I needed very strong strings. It seems quite easy to create a letter font but its totally not, because I need to think of the size of the creation and balance also try to cover those strings with green, and make it look natural. This exercise makes me realized how easy to creative a font with any materials that we can just pick up very easily. Our creativity inspirations just right next to us, if we think carefully, see clearly and do thing cleverly, then our ideas and outcome would never end.

The Girls – Identity We all were very much enjoying Swap Gender brief, it was fun and silly. The Idea of brief was showing audience our identity in any way of media. Our group were thinking roll playing. We were trying to keep our own personally into our play roll but still need to show which character we were playing. The process was hilarious but we had learned that swap gender is not an easy thing to do, also try to represent different sex with totally opposite gender is a huge challenge. As it was a two hours taste so we did not have enough time to prepare for proper clothing and make up, or even to study our character personality. However, we had different ideas of taking photography of our group mates, try to get pictures throw a little button holes, reason of this is different of viewing, present images differently and make it more difficult to get the right proportion of people and angle of face. We were quite happy with the result of this images, it does show funny effect and losing colour in some images.

Badges

I printed out what it was in my mind when I was doing those badges. Guinea Pigs are the biggest part in my chapter at the moment, they are fun, entertain and cute. I kind of forget how to write and type Chinese really; I decided make few badges with 8 Chinese characters which all meaning different human emotion. Red represent Happy and Positive in China, Black Colour often have opposite meaning of Red that is Negative or Sad.

Burning Love

Love is a Fire, Love is an Ocean, Love is the way you set my heart in motion, Love is a higher burning desire, The Fire must be real, because love is all I Feel. Matches represent we all are individual person who has different shape; size; colour; personality but we still a human. Love could be totally different to everyone, it depends on what do you think love really is‌ Personally, love is sexy on fire; passion like fireworks; romantic like roses but it won’t last long because no one can live forever. As long as we were enjoying the moment of LOVE then its more than enough. What is your LOVE? Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lc_t0HxP2gY

Critical Evaluation Being an artist sometime is not easy to critical your own art works, mainly because you love it and passion about your work that is why you will create a piece of art that you enjoy. But somehow we will do stuff that you don’t enjoy just for our audience for many reason. If I need to speak the truth, in past few years I do feel like I was trying to impress my tutors sometime more than my soul. That is why in this year I listen to my heart, do what I can do the best. When I look back to my A Level Portfolio that I realize what I was doing in my university course was a shame; the standard, the quality and the creativity were all dropped. Especially when I saw my art works still display at my school while I was doing my work placement there, I feel like I need to restart everything again and find my real passion of art as soon as possible. Some people might think that we didn’t learn a lot this year and process much works compare to last year, but somehow I do love it and I am enjoying my own time with freedom creation that allow me to explore my own creativity. In this independent practice period that I have learned a lots about my self, I feel stronger in soul that allow me to face my fear, which are failure and unpredictable future. I dare to try something that I have never done before in this project which is textile and sewing. It is a huge challenge for me because I discover and learn everything myself but I take it onboard. I am not afraid of trying new creation but I was fighting against time and this time I could not afford to fail. I am in love with my art works at the moment, one seems about to complete then I already have another ideas for my new piece of art to begin, it seems will never end. It is hard to say when the work is finished, because I will often go back to it and edit a bit more, sometime I love it but sometime I regret that I shouldn’t over work it. It not easy to respond to my audiences criticism, but, because they explored my mistake completely from the darkness, that is why I have to settle my unfinished projects. This learning process is not going to end just yet because I believe it will never end. Studying is a interesting subject that suit anyone in anytime, and I still got more to learn.

This project is a small step of my on going studies. Enjoy Art, Enjoy Life. by Jason Ng
